a. Gold can be found in almost every country throughout the world. Gold is either found in alluvial deposits which are caused by rivers exposing gold deposits or in mining operations where large quantities of earth are moved and processed to extract gold. Gold naturally occurs in purities of 85% or higher. Gold is heavier than other minerals found around it and therefore it is easy to separate using water sluices. Once gold is separated from the minerals which surround it, it is refined using either a chemical method in which gold is dissolved in a solution called aqua regia, which is a strong acid solution, or it is melted along with mercury which causes impurities to concentrate in a layer of the melted gold which is called slag. Once the slag is removed, gold has been refined to 100% pure.

b. Gold is a very easy metal to alloy. This means it can be combined with other metals to achieve production goals which would make a harder metal or a metal of a different color. For example gold is alloyed with copper to make rose gold and with tin and silver to make white gold. Aside from this gold is also dissolved in solutions to create electroplating applications. These applications allow gold to be plated onto wire and for other industrial purposes.

c. In jewelry gold purity is defined by Karat. 24 karat gold is defined as gold which has 24 out of 24 parts made of pure gold. Pure gold is very soft and seldom used for jewelry as it is easy to bend and wears and scratches way too quickly. 18 karat gold, or gold which has 18 parts pure gold and 6 parts of something else, is commonly used to make high end jewelry. 14 karat gold or gold that is 14 parts pure gold and 10 parts something else, is also used to make jewelry as it is harder and more durable than 18 karat gold. Gold is measured in Troy Ounces. The old question what weighs more an ounce of gold or an ounce of feathers is actually a trick question. Gold is measured in Troy Ounces and feathers in Avoirdupois Ounces. There are 31.1 grams in a Troy Ounce and 28.35 grams in an avoirdupois ounce. Therefore the Troy ounce, the ounce of gold, is heavier than the avoirdupois ounce. Conversely, the troy pound is lighter than the avoirdupois pound. Thus making the pound of feathers heavier than the pound of gold.

3) Gold Stamps and Identification.

a. The Federal Trade Commission regulates the trade of precious metals and directs manufacturers on how to stamp and identify gold. In the United States an item must be 10 Karat Gold or higher karat to be called gold. Also, gold that is plated must be plated with 10 karat gold or better to be called gold plated. Gold jewelry fineness is identified by a stamp which tell you how pure the gold used in the piece is. 417 or 41.7 percent gold is 10 karat gold. 585 or 58.5 percent gold is 14 karat gold. 750 or 75 percent gold is 18 karat gold. Normally a piece is either stamped with a three digit number or the actual karat content, such as 14K. Jewelry which is gold plated or gold filled is stamped with a GP or GF after the karat of the gold. For example 18 KGF, denoting that this piece of jewelry was manufactured using 18 Karat Gold Filled. Gold filled jewelry is jewelry manufactured using a solid layer of gold which has been mechanically bonded to a base material such as silver or a base metal like pewter. Gold plated (GP) is when an electroplating method is used to deposit a very thin layer of gold onto silver or a base metal.

Ian Adelaide Mason Pearce - This beauty is actually Langston’s older sibling (only by 2 years) and is the first to be ousted out for their…uniqueness. Lord Albert Pearce has had three sons, none of which he’s been able to deal with much to the dismay and annoyance of many of those around them. Adelaide or Adela, uses Mason as their last name after they were forced to drop Pearce when their father cut them off and stripped them of any title related to the family. Apparently the name Adelaide is actually their great grandmother’s name from their mother side, “She was as elegant as Audrey Hepburn and deserves to be honored”

They are 36, and actually live in the same small village Deacon does, around the corner from his home. Apparently they had come for tea when he had been getting settled, fell in love with the area and had a home built as well, on the other side of the village though, oddly closer to the parish. Gender fluid, they express their gender as whatever they please, whenever they please. They are bisexual, and prefer women though they have been with both, including Niall a few years ago. Very friendly and genuinely sweet, Adela works primarily as a professional photographer for the royal family, as well as working with Charlotte Moore in Black Moon Cosmetics, I think they do the photos for it though I’m not entirely sure.

Joseph Skinner - While I know Skinner is not his real last name (at least I don’t think so) he takes on the moniker when he joins the Suicide Kings as the lead guitarist, taking over when Wolf steps back into being the lead singer and I’m not entirely sure what happens to Scott. I think he stays in the band as a secondary guitar player but I’m not sure.

Arthur Noble - Formerly a professor at Brown university he takes a significant pay decrease when he becomes Vice Principal of O Fallon East in Illinois. He does this after seeing how hollow the college age kids are and wants to find a way to help them actually succeed in their future rather than just be another cog in the wheel. Arthur has studied Sociology, Psychology and English Literature, the last was his specialty at Brown. He is kind and genuinely cares about the kids he’s taking care of, similar to Casper he wants to see people succeed and actually have some kind of passion going forward in their lives. He’s recently divorced but still wears his wedding ring, so I don’t think he’s quite ready to let that go.

Casper Barnes - eldest brother to Elias (who uses their mothers last name, Sharpe, rather than their father’s name) and Cornelius. Casper has a very big heart and seeks to make schools safe for the kids under his care, he feels responsible for each and every one of them and considers what happened with the former vice principal a personal slight in his judgement. He has set O Fallon up to be a test school for new education practices and tries to make sure everyone is getting the best they can possibly get. After his middle brother’s passing he took over as guardian for Lilly though she does better on her own, so he’s there if she needs him for anything but doesn’t force her to live with him.

Christopher Reigns - Christopher has been around for a while, a former sex addict turned psychiatrist and therapist for the same issues, he currently lives and works in New York City close to the rest of his degenerate family. After the drama with his younger brother Ethan, Christopher takes over taking care of Ethan’s son Tanner and picks up where he left off with Hannah Lee as well. He seems to be one of the few Reigns that has their head on correctly, he went through his trauma and addictions and managed to come out on top of them.

Eirondyr Thalasane - one of the elves of the Woodland Realm of Murkwood (formerly Brightwood) and also one of Valenduil’s closer friends. He is actually older than Val, formerly being one of those closer to Legolas’ age. When Legolas chose to take his human wife with him to the undying realm, leaving their half-blood son behind in the care of his grandfather, Eirondyr (sometimes called Raine due to one of his spells) promised to keep an eye on him. While older, he acts as though he is still young and doesn’t work so much as a mentor as he does just a comrade. Eirondyr is an arcanist, practicing arcane magic and a magister of glamour, he will occasionally make his ears disappear so he can travel amongst the world of men. He’s also been known to change the size of certain items, more often than not as a prank. He chooses, when Thranduil makes the proclamation that someone should pick up the quest to help Sara and her group, to go with them and Val, to help them traverse the destruction that is Middle Earth. He has connections to the Hobbits and the world of men as well, in Bard and a mysterious boatsman called The Blackwald (Halfdan)

Gage Robards - Gage’s real name is Gabriel Toussaint, he is the “lost” brother of the Toussaint sisters and has, for the last 10 years or so, been somewhat trapped inside his own mind. I don’t remember exactly what happened to Gage, he was put into a mental hospital by a member of their family and locked away there for something he saw and while there he had electro-shock therapy performed, which caused him to lose his ability to speak. Over the years, he came into the care of Sylvia Summers and is currently living in NYC with her. He has also learned sign language and does some speech therapy but he chooses most times not to speak because his vocal cords have been damaged as well. Gage has some memories of his sisters, and does still want to get back in touch with them. (he was sitting in my head the other day feeding the birds from a loaf of bread in Central Park)

This creature doesn’t have a name yet, or at least hasn’t given me one yet but he is where the “super soldier serum” behind Project Wildfire comes from. He is actually a Hunter that was captured by the CIA by a former member of the early Section who shared with them what is going on behind the scenes, and told them that taking control of the darkness would mean better survival in the future. The Hunter’s blood has been used to alter and create the soldiers and failed experiments including Drayton and the rest of the hitmen as well as the pyromancer Badger and a handful of others. When Drayton calls on Kristy for her final job with them, they apparently find the ragged creature in a room, spitting all manner of obscenities at them. It’s against Kristy’s warning that they let him go, something that will come back to haunt later, as he makes a bee-line for Cirian wanting to punish humans for what they’ve done to him.

Adrian Wilde - Professor at Harvard when he meets Crystal Townsend and against his better judgment strikes up an affair with her, he can’t really explain how it happens but he falls for her hard. When she expresses to him her fear in falling in love with him, he cradles her in his arms, combing his fingers through her hair and tells her to fall, he’ll always be there to catch her. Adrian originally wanted to be an author but never managed to make his stories translate into full blown books, instead he teaches creative writing, jokingly saying ‘those who can’t, teach’ but the reality is he is still writing and working on finishing his first book as his and Crystal’s relationship continues. While slightly concerned for the safety of his job while she’s a student, when she turns fully into her music he feels safer being more open about their relationship.

Aryn Hobb - Aryn is an alien, first and foremost, having been on Earth since the late 90s, or somewhere there abouts, they were recruited into the very earliest form of Section and worked as a scientist for them after being brought in from NASA where they had originally worked as an astrophysicist. Aryn is a sebacean like Maxwell later on and actually is able to help with his assimilation into human culture a bit better (though it helps that Maxwell has actually been on Earth once before, even if it was back in the 1880s) Working for Section has helped Aryn blend in a bit more with the human race, feeling absolutely no desire to return to their people, as they were deemed less than by a tribunal of Commandants. Exile is one of the worst things for their people, as it separates them from their own, and being alone is unhealthy for them. Aryn stole a ship, rather than be cast out from their people and used wormhole technology to warp to this version of Earth C-139 (our earth, it’s apparently not one of the more popular Earths to travel to as it’s technologically inferior to most of the others in the alter-verse) Assuming correctly that they could hide there and because humans and Sebaceans are so closely related to one another, with only internal differences (and lifespan, they can typically live for about 700 years) most people wouldn’t pick up on without getting too intimate.

When Aryn comes to work for the original Section they are figured out by the medical tech Avery and they come clean out of concern of being used and abused by these humans. Instead they find friends there and take a special interest in both Avery and later Justice. Aryn uses their knowledge of weaponry to create a brand new arsenal of weapons and “toys” used by Justice and the rest of the teams. In particular the holo-training lab and more recently some very interesting explosives. Outside of Section, Aryn has a very normal life, they have an apartment with a cat given to them by Justice’s friend Adriana, and spend their downtime with a small handful of friends. Generally they identify as non-binary, as it’s easier to explain their appearance, though their voice is incredibly deep.

yasmine arslan comes from a wealthy family, primarily involving the shale or oil companies they own. she didn’t want to follow in her four older siblings’ footsteps (with yasmine being the youngest) and continue delving into the family business. she joined the military at a young age and became a medic for the u.s. marines with her family’s full-support.. it was meeting adrian that encouraged her to wrap up her contract and become honorably discharged from the marines seeing as fraternizing was forbidden. however, her devotion to helping people didn’t cease and she accepted an offer as an rn in the hometown they decided to settle into.

it came to little surprise to either of them, even after a miscarrige, when yasmine became pregnant with their little boy, josiah. those around her were shocked to see her excel at being a mother seeing as she seemingly didn’t possess a single maternal bone in her body, but motherhood changed her. she adored her son and josiah was absolutely adored to bits by both of his parents.

adrian had been in the military a lot longer than yasmine and had a lot more blood on his hands than she did. he had a harder time adjusting to the civilian lifestyle than she had and ultimately decided to cope by becoming a mercenary. he was a loving husband and father by day, but a killer, gun-for-hire by night. all of the killing began to take a toll when he sloppily allowed one of his marks to get away. he didn’t think it would come back to haunt him until it did. their four-year old son was killed in cold-blood in their arms, forever changing their lives and their marriage.

yasmine was never a warm person, by any means, but she lived for her son and her family. his death forced herself into a recluse unable to do much other than autonomously meander throughout life.

instead of separating, the family moved to wisteria lane to try and start over and discuss the idea of trying for another child. despite her cold demeanor, nursing is her passion. she seldom shows her emotions and really only allows adrian in long enough to get a glimpse of a person beyond her beautiful, bronzed, cold demeanor. she doesn’t know her husband is responsible for the death of their son because heaven forbid. when she isn’t in her nurses scrubs or work uniforms, she’s seen in designer attire. very little people know of josiah’s existence because no one is allowed in their home. those who are hardly make it far enough to see his room or any lingering pictures of him.

They were proud of her for graduating with honors and still continuing to work her way up the ranks in the medical field.

Garrett Russell was a Force Recon Marine, Scout Sniper, 2nd Lieutenant, and was a Silver Star recipient, with over a decade and a half of military experience under his belt. He reciprocated his feelings for her and chose to continue their relationship after he retired. Not shortly after she graduated, Yasmine became a nurse at a local hospital in Corpus and they began to see each other.

➤ After many false positives, difficulty with their fertility, and a miscarriage, Adrian and Yasmine successfully conceived a son, Josiah Zayn Murray. He was the best parts of his parents, the only good thing either of them were capable of. Adrian became a mercenary to support his family, even though Yasmine had her trust fund to keep them living a comfortable lifestyle. Regardless, he chose to funnel his energy and skills into something he was good at rather than let the trauma of his experiences as a soldier consume him.

➤ Their family was the epitome of picture-perfect, of happiness. It was enviable to watch a beautiful family live such a quaint, charmed life, despite Yasmine’s opposition to her husband’s occupation. She tried to focus on being a good mother and a supportive wife, but often found herself resenting him every time he’d come home covered in blood, smelling of gunpowder or burnt flesh. He was an attentive father, but became lost in the bloodlust aspect of being a mercenary and it eventually came back to haunt them.

➤ Shortly after completing a job, Adrian inadvertently left a loose end behind, or so she assumed.. Said ‘loose-end’ eventually found his family and remorselessly attacked them, spraying their home with bullets, leaving both of them unscathed. Their son, however, was shot repeatedly and died immediately and gruesomely in their arms. It took her awhile to figure out he was to blame, despite having her suspicions, but she resented him beyond her ability to remain married to him. They became separated because she couldn’t see him without thinking of Josiah, the spitting image of Adrian, but she refused to officially divorce him..

➤ Eventually, they moved to Fairview at the recommendation of a family friend and settled into the quaint neighborhood of Wisteria Lane, hoping for a chance at a fresh start where they could hopefully work on their marriage and try for another child.

➤ She doesn’t allow anyone to publicly see her grieve, choosing to break down on her own or amid her husband’s presence. Her coldness only amplified and she’s recently become more violent, hitting Adrian and throwing anything at him while purposely instigating so he’ll defend himself against her.

The Host could make people disappear.

It was the most terrifying thing to come out of his madness. If someone didn’t exist in the reality he currently thought he was in, there was a very real possibility of them just vanishing in his proper reality. Thankfully, it never seemed to last more than a few seconds as the radius of the Host’s magic passed.

It’d never happened to an ego before.

Not until now.

King poked his head into the living area from the kitchen, where Dark, Bim, Illinois, and Eric were. He’d always been a skittish man, especially with the Author around, but after he started dating Bim...he’d gotten a little better. But now, he was a mess, worse than he ever was with the Author. “H-h-have any of you seen Dr. Iplier? I-I checked his office, a-and his room, and the Host’s, but...”

“I haven’t seen him all day.” Illinois shrugged, one arm wrapped around Eric’s shoulders. Eric was smiling happily as he nestled against Illinois’ chest, but the guilty look on Illinois’ face wasn’t something King thought too hard about.

“Why did you need him?” Dark glanced up from his book, voice heartbreakingly soft. He was curled up in one of the arm chairs, pulled close to the crackling fireplace, next to his bookshelf. It’d become his little corner.

King said nothing, but held up a palm. A collective wince rippled through the room at the sight of the shallow gash, blood smeared across his palm. His hand shook. Bim flinched wildly, tearing his eyes away from the sight and pulling his knees up to his chest. King’s voice shook as much as his hand. “I-I-I was c-climbing up to my treehouse, you know, t-to see how it is a-after so long? But -- I-I slipped, and --” He sniffed, lowering his hand. “Do...you know where he is?”

Dark shook his head slowly. “You could try asking the Host. Slim chance he’ll give you a proper answer, but it’s worth a shot.”

“Ask the Host what?”

At that moment, the Host himself wandered in, hands in his pockets, ink dripping steadily from his lips and black and red swirled in the stains on his bandages, coating his cheeks in almost artistic smears. He looked...more that stable than he had been in the past, though the Host’s stability was relative; his words betrayed more than his body language.

Dark offered him a small smile. “Do you know where Dr. Iplier is? King needs him for his hand.”

The Host’s brow furrowed in confusion, tilting his head slightly. “Who’s Dr. Iplier?”

The temperature of the room seemed to drop rapidly as ice trickled down everyone’s spine. The Host just seemed to grow more confused, and he shrunk in on himself, into his coat, taking a scared step backwards. “...What did I say? Why...why is everyone so quiet?”

“Host...” Bim stood, taking a cautious step forward, and the Host flinched back violently, retreating back into the hallway. “Please...Dr. Iplier. Your husband.”

The Host shook his head, covering his ears as he continued to walk backwards. “No no no no no, the Host doesn’t have a husband, he doesn’t know who Dr. Iplier is, please stop saying that name...”

Bim pressed harder, raising his hands placatingly. “Please, Host, you have to remember him. We need him. Bring him back.”

“Shut up shut up SHUT UP!” The Host fell backwards, curling into a ball on the floor in the middle of the hallway. Eric sobbed loudly when the Host suddenly raised his voice, Illinois trying to soothe him as Dark flinched wildly himself, coiling into a tight ball with his aura nearly hiding him entirely from view. “Dr. Iplier doesn’t exist! You’re making him up! Leave the Host alone, he doesn’t have a husband!”

“Then what’s on your finger, Host?” Bim crouched down beside him, taking the Host’s hand, though he was obviously nervous as the scent of the Host’s blood grew stronger. He held up the Host’s left hand, shifting his wedding band. “If you’re not married, then why do you have a wedding ring?”

The Host said nothing, just sobbed violently. Eric was having his own meltdown on the couch, crawling into Illinois’ lap and clinging to him desperately. The Host hesitantly ran a finger over his wedding band, and he let out another sob, clutching his fist to his chest. “The Host -- I -- I don’t --” He made a small, pathetic noise, curling into a tighter ball, hands covering the back of his head.

There was a harsh, desperate gasp, and suddenly Dr. Iplier was standing in the hallway, lips blue, face disturbingly pale as he slumped against the wall and slid to the ground. He shivered violently, tears visibly frozen to his face, and he crawled over to the Host, clinging to him. He practically climbed into the Host’s coat with him, uncaring of the blood and ink, just shivering. “H-Hos-s-st-t...”

The Host wrapped his arms around Dr. Iplier, the two of them laying curled on the floor. Wherever Dr. Iplier had been...he didn’t look good. Dark hesitantly lifted his head again, craning his neck to see into the hallway, before tentatively reaching out with his aura. He pulled the two into the room to rest in front of the fire, Dr. Iplier’s violent shivering extremely concerning, but there wasn’t much they could do about it.

King whimpered a little, blood dripping down his fingers and onto the carpet, and Bim winced. He hesitantly approached, taking King’s uninjured hand. “...Come on, I’ll clean that up for you.”

Eden and Edward Masen grew up never leaving the other's side. Eden had grown close with another person during her brother's stay in the hospital, Dr. Carlisle Cullen. When he found out that he had to be the one to tell Eden that her mother had gotten an even worse case of the sickness it broke his heart. That was the one thing he hated about being a doctor, having to tell the families they would or had lost a loved one. Eden and Edward had lost their father in the first world war, Carlisle knew this because Eden would often brush Edward's hair back and laugh, saying if he would just cut it he would look like their late father.

When attending to their mother Carlisle updated the worrying mother of her son and daughter, after finding that Edward would not make it and neither would she, Elizabeth Masen told the blond doctor to do anything he could to save her son. That night the sibling's mother died and Edward was turned into a vampire. Carlisle knew he could not let the young man near his sister he told Eden that her mother and brother had died. She was alone in the world, Carlisle left her alone with her brother for a moment after telling her of the tragedy and came back to the teen singing a melancholy lullaby to her brother. Carlisle had hugged the girl before having to send her home, promising to stop by their home and check in on her soon. The blond vampire didn't expect the teen to go to a nearby bridge and jump off. When the man heard the paramedics calling out the injuries and describing the teen he stopped in his tracks, Carlisle saw her hand fall off the gurney and identified the ring on her hand as Elizabeth Masen's wedding band.

my father died a year ago this month. I was talking to his widow yesterday, his sixth wife. She was with him six years. Now she’s in an independent living facility. It is weird talking about the life of a male who basically abandoned his two sons and spent the rest of his life with other people’s families.

She had been divorced three times and had lived alone for twenty-five years before she went online at age 80 to look for a friend. They were the same age. He was an ordained minister and she was an agnostic. She was from New Hampshire. He was from Southern Illinois. He had a couple of degrees and a varied resume, having worked for the railroad, in an auto factory, preached, and worked for the state in mental health. She had raised her children and worked in the handmade crafts field, and some other stuff.

There was a lot of stuff he apparently didn’t tell her, and some stuff he probably shouldn’t have. He had a couple of preliminary health burps before he finally stroked out in an emergency room. He had months of warning and a couple of major moves in a couple of years to sort his shit out. He had hundreds of records and books and a thousand cds. It was left to his widow and her kids to sort it out and haul it away.

He gave me three things, a fascination with graphic art, a love of reading, and a curiosity about music. He was also fascinated with politics and white people church, but I find those topics so closely related that I yawn. He introduced me to jazz, the Greatful Dead, and Harlan Ellison. I knew Charlie Brown and Snoopy before I knew Dick and Jane.

I never knew how he felt about having children, nor his philosophies on sex and women. I felt abandoned at an early age, even before my mother chased him off. He had been chased out of the pulpit at a couple of churches in the south, Savannah and Atlanta. His father, who had wandered out of his life when he was ten or so, lived in Sarasota, Florida, operating a lift bridge on a shipping channel. He remarried within months of the divorce, as did my mother. My brother and I attended both ceremonies, I have photos to prove it.

I had initiated communication with him sometime between 1981 and 1984, I don’t remember how or why. I spoke to him almost monthly after that. After I ended up in Austin, he visited several times, most notably to officiate at my wedding to my ex. His second marriage exploded into violence, cheating, and lies. His third lasted almost two decades until two cancers in a row ate her up. He went back to school and remarried. That didn’t last more than a few years and on the rebound he married a waitress at a Cracker Barrel who was on only a couple years older than I was. That lasted almost twenty years and through his retirement from the state. She had better places to be and he agreed. Divorce number 3. He moved into an apartment and went to work for Walmart as a greeter and then in produce.

The most time I ever spent with him, outside of his trips to visit, and the trip I took to the old sod in 2012 or so, staying at his house that time, was when my ex, my daughter, and my father and I went to Six Flags Over Texas. It wasn’t a bad event, not even with a seven year old, and there were moments of usefulness, but I don’t like bemusement parks, and I’ve been to Sick Flags two other times as a chaperone for the middle school band trip.

He was cremated with half his last bride’s wedding dress. She wears his wedding ring on her middle finger. She wears his bible college ring on a chain. I don’t wear jewelry. I had a necklace or two for a few years in my teens and twenties. I can’t stand rings or watches. His ashes are in a hole in New Hampshire.

He had a chance to make a difference with my brother and I. Turned out he had better things to do.
