THIS DAY IN GAY HISTORY
based on: The White Crane Institute's 'Gay Wisdom', Gay Birthdays, Gay For Today, Famous GLBT, glbt-Gay Encylopedia, Today in Gay History, Wikipedia, and more … October 23
1762 – English sailors Martin Billin and James Bryan are acquitted of sodomy even though a witness testifies against them.
1766 – Christoffel Bosch van Leeuwarden, a seventy year old porter in the Netherlands, was convicted of seduction to sodomy and sentenced to three years of prison labour.
1880 – A medical journal publishes an article, "Notes upon Sodomy," which claims that men who engage in sodomy have a different type of penis from those who don't.
1951 – Michael Rupert, born in Denver, Colorado, is an American actor, singer, director and composer. Rupert originated the role of "Marvin" in the William Finn musicals March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland.
Rupert made his Broadway debut in 1968 in Kander and Ebb's The Happy Time as the young Bibi Bonnard, which earned him his first Tony Award nomination, for Featured Actor in a Musical. He returned to California after The Happy Time, and appeared in local theater while in high school.
In 1974, Rupert returned to Broadway as a replacement in the role of Pippin. In 1981, he appeared on Broadway in Shakespeare's Cabaret. He then created the role of Marvin in two William Finn musicals, March of the Falsettos (1981) at the Off-Broadway Playwrights Horizons and Falsettoland (1991). In 1986 he appeared as Oscar in the Broadway revival of Sweet Charity,[8] for which he won the 1986 Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical.
His television credits include guest roles on series such as My Three Sons, The Waltons, Marcus Welby, M.D. and its legal spin-off Owen Marshall: Counselor at Law, Emergency! and The Partridge Family.
In addition to acting, Rupert has directed several plays and musicals.
Rupert lives in New York City with his life partner, Will Chafin.
1954 – Ang Lee, the Oscar-winning Taiwanese-born director was born today. Lee decided to take on a small-budget, low-profile independent film based on Annie Proulx's Pulitzer Prize-finalist short story originally published in The New Yorker, Brokeback Mountain. In a 2005 article by Robert K. Elder, Lee was quoted as saying, "What do I know about Gay ranch hands in Wyoming?" In spite of the 'straight' director's removal from the subject at hand, Brokeback Mountain showcased Lee's skills in probing depths of the human heart.
The 2005 movie about the forbidden love between two Wyoming cowboys immediately caught public attention and initiated intense debates. The film was critically acclaimed at major international film festivals and won Lee numerous Best Director and Best Film awards worldwide. In addition, "Brokeback" became a cultural phenomenon and a box office hit. "Brokeback" was nominated for a leading eight Oscars and was the frontrunner for Best Picture heading into the March 5 ceremony, but lost out to Crash, a story about race relations in Los Angeles, in a controversial upset. There was speculation that the film's depiction of homosexuality might have been the reason for that upset, while others speculate that Crash was simply a better movie. Lee said he was disappointed that his film did not win Best Picture, but was honored to win Best Director, becoming the first Asian to ever win the award.
If you're a fan of Brokeback but don't know Ang Lee's other work, we'd recommend his brilliant and touching 1993 film "Wedding Banquet." The film about an interracial Gay couple and the meeting of cultures is a treasure.
He also managed to successfully film Life of Pi, the claustophobic story of a castaway boy and a Bengal tiger togetther adrift in a lifeboat - in widescreen 3D, yet!
1971 – Matthew Williamson is an English fashion designer.
Williamson is openly gay. He counts celebrities such as Cat Deeley, Sienna Miller, Kelis, Jade Jagger and Plum Sykes amongst his friends, but has often been criticised by others in the fashion industry for using them to promote his designs.
He was born in Manchester, England, and studied in Manchester at Loreto College until he was 17. He then moved to London to attend school at Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design, graduating in 1994.
His eponymous fashion house was founded in February 1997. That same year, Williamson debuted his collection 'Electric Angels' at London Fashion Week. His collections were displayed during New York Fashion week in 2002. His store at 28 Bruton Street, in Mayfair, London, followed in 2004.
In 2005, he launched his own perfume range; the following year he was appointed Creative Director at Emilio Pucci. In 2007, a runway show of his designs was incorporated into the video for Prince's song "Chelsea Rodgers" from his Planet Earth album. In 2007, the Design Museum, London, hosted a restrospective of his work entitled "Matthew Williamson – 10 years in Fashion".
In 2008, Williamson was awarded the "Red Carpet Designer" accolade at the British Fashion Awards where he has also received three nominations for Designer of the Year. In September 2008 Matthew Williamson returned to London full-time to focus fully on his own label's forthcoming ventures and expansion. He made a guest appearance on season 7 of Project Runway. The episode aired on 28 January 2010.
In October 2010 it was announced that Matthew Williamson signed a new licensing deal with MBFG. The deal began a new line – Muse by Matthew Williamson.
His collections are shown twice a year during New York Fashion Week, and they often have an Indian influence, perhaps related to the time Williamson spent working in India for the clothing store Monsoon.
1983 – Josh Strickland is an American singer and actor from Charleston, South Carolina. Strickland appeared on season 2 of Fox TV's American Idol.
He starred as Tarzan in Disney's production of Tarzan on Broadway at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. The production's run ended after some 14 months and Strickland performed the final show along with the rest of the original cast.
In 2009, Strickland became an original cast member of Peepshow in Las Vegas, and is currently still in the cast. He befriended his costar Holly Madison and could be seen regularly in her television reality show Holly's World.
Josh said of his coming out to The Advocate :
I was really tired of people making up their own answers. I'd rather just put it to rest and be myself. Nowadays it really doesn't even matter. You see people coming out all the time, and it makes them stronger and happier. I didn't want to be one of those souls struggling every day to fight who I am. I'm 10 times better just by being out and open about it. It makes my life so much happier. I have no regrets about anything.
1989 – Simon Thwaites a sailor in the Canadian Armed Forces (b.1962) is ousted from the Canadian Navy for being HIV+.
Simon Thwaites was born In Portsmouth, England. At the age of 13, his family immigrated to Canada. He now resides in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Simon had served with the Canadian Armed Forces for approximately nine and a half years from June 1980 to 23 October 1989, when he was medically discharged from the CAF for being HIV positive. At the time of his discharge, Simon operated large weapons and electronic surveillance equipment on a variety of warships.
In 1986, Simon had discovered that he was HIV-positive. From May 1986 until November 1987 the progression of his disease was uneventful, yet in the fall of 1986 he was removed from his final qualifying course to become a full Master Corporal and at the same time his security clearance was downgraded. It was only as a result of a tribunal hearing in 1992 that he discovered that this removal was a result of his sexual orientation and not his HIV positive status.
In late October and during November of 1987, he began developing symptoms of HIV, including night sweats and a reduced T-cell count. In March 1988, military doctors conducted a "paper" medical assessment, at which time his medical category was downgraded. As a result, in November 1988 the CAF decided to release Simon, effective 23 October 1989.
In June 1993, after a lengthy inquiry, a human rights tribunal upheld Simon's complaint. It found that the CAF had an obligation to properly assess the risks involved in retaining Simon, including the risks of his going to sea, far from hospital facilities. The military was also required to consider various options other than outright release, such as transferring him to another military occupation.
The Tribunal held that the military had discriminated against Simon as a result of his disability. It held that the military failed in its legal duty to accommodate Simon's disability and to individually assess his capabilities in the context of the risk that he potentially posed to himself and others. It also held that the increased risk posed by retaining a disabled person in the Forces had to be more than a minimal risk before the Forces could justify outright dismissal.
As part of its award, the Tribunal ordered the military to pay back wages as well as some future amounts that would have been owing to Simon had he been retained in the CAF. The Tribunal awarded the maximum amount possible for hurt feelings and its total compensation totalled more than $160,000. It also awarded his legal and actuarial expenses.
The military appealed this decision. It also applied to the Federal Court for an interim order allowing it to withhold payment to Simon pending the outcome of the appeal. In September 1993, the Federal Court refused to grant the interim order, saying that Simon "should be allowed to live his remaining days in dignity." In March 1994, the Federal Court dismissed the military's appeal in its entirety.
Simon has over the years has walked his own path. Constantly volunteering with AIDS organizations and being there for people as they died doing Palliative care, and surviving the horrendous early years of AIDS had a profound effect on ones view of the world.
In 2009 after six years of study he became an openly gay-minister as a Reverend of the Spiritualist Church. With the help of his friends he has started up a new church called Angel Hall which welcomes all.
1993 – In Helena, Montana, the state supreme court ruled that transvestitism is not a sufficient reason to deny a father joint custody of his 3-year old child.

What amenities are essential for an Indian wedding venue?
When choosing Indian wedding venues, it is essential to consider amenities that cater to the rich cultural traditions and large guest lists often associated with these celebrations. Essential amenities include a spacious banquet hall or outdoor area that can accommodate traditional rituals like the Baraat, Mandap setup, and Sangeet. Additionally, the venue should offer a bridal suite, ample parking, and a catering service familiar with Indian cuisine, ensuring that the diverse menu meets the dietary preferences of all guests. High-quality audiovisual equipment is also crucial for ceremonies, dance performances, and speeches.
Finding Indian wedding venues that also serve as quinceañera venues in Los Angeles, can be a versatile choice. 06.01.17
It's officially my wedding day: take two.
Months of work all set to culminate in a single grand performance; one take that will serve as the crown jewel in a beautiful, yet incomplete setting of moments highlighting a relationship that is far from its end.
I think about the other jewels in my life with Jesse as I tip around the home that isn't my own, grateful for his mother's hospitality but unable to sleep hours before the day that will be almost completely mine. I don't see other frames like the one we're hours from capturing. Unlike the single moment our wedding will be, the other jewels are montages, glinting through my mind in flickering shimmers...
The way that my hand has been finding his and his finding mine for the last ten years, twining our fingers on walks or drives, in crowds, at dinners, events, and banquets, while we're thoughtfully tangled on the couch or recklessly tangled in bed...
The way that we swim deeply in the pools of each other's talents and traits, appreciating efforts on stage and screen--behind and in front of the camera, reveling greedily in sleepy lullabies and soft affirmations, delivering unending praise to egos that can't grow any larger...
The way that we've pried one another apart and wedged into the gaps we created, accepting that he would became the one who feeds me on those days where I still don't think about food and I would became the one who never lets him construct walls around the things he's feeling...
Ten years feels like a lifetime for two people who seemed to have settled on one another long ago. We could have married right after high school, at some point in college, prior to moving in together, before having a child, or at any point throughout the years when our bond showed no signs of breaking. We'd already imagined a lifetime together--not in those exact terms the whole time, but we couldn't see an end in sight. We promised not to give one another up at 17 and 18 and embraced being selfish with each other even back then. To me, a wedding has been little more than a giant party with both of our families to confirm what we already knew.
I walk past windows overlooking a city that doesn't hold still. I've brought as much of Los Angeles here that I could. I've sprinkled LA around our home in Tribeca in the form of warm colors, seashells, sunlight, and California poppies, all of which have worked their way into the details of our ceremony. I've also invited as much of my family as I could to witness my nuptials, a wave from the west that has comfortably blanketed the days and evenings leading up to today.
Aunts and uncles and cousins abound; the Mottas are here in full force, descending on the city many of them view as the cold, cluttered, constricting opposite of the stretching valleys and depths of land along the California coast they're used to. I felt the same way about New York once upon time. I saw it as this lingering creature, one that I knew would always call to Jesse in one way or another and force me to make peace with the locale. Now we've come to an agreement, New York City and I. We don't see eye to eye about the underground deathtrap, the street meat, the snow-covered winters, the constant noise, the almost mythical beaches, yards, and outdoor pools, the suffocatingly close living quarters, or the stunning lack of visible stars at night... However, there's more here to love than there is to hate and the things I love here are things I refuse to live without.
I only argued a bit when everyone insisted I sleep alone so that I could rest, but I still seek out my daughter and find her blissfully asleep and cuddled against her aunt.
Although I prefer Vivi to sleep on her own so that Jess and I don't lose our bed, I don't even think to pry her from Pepper's arms and I hope that their connection soothes that part of my big sister that wrinkles when she talks about her attempts to have a child of her own. Madeline has been...surprising in those conversations that lob between my still feeling my way around as a mother and Pepper's unyielding desire to become one as the three of us string together a system of support knotted tighter by our shared love of each other and the little girl who has found a way to change all of our lives without trying at all.
In a few hours, I know Vivi will run to my mother when she arrives to get ready for the day, having chosen to stay in her hotel suite to ensure that my father wouldn't spend the entire night working, and I will see that softness I never recognized in Madeline until Vivi existed. I promised my mother that she could help get Vivi ready and I am glad to not worry about the task of chasing around my very curious and very mobile almost sixteen-month-old to get her into the "ball of fluff" dress my younger brother so lovingly dubbed her outfit for the big day. ...Basil's snark is another thing I am glad to be momentarily rid of as he has promised me a full 24 hours where he won't push any of the well-worn buttons he's created over the years.
Back in my temporary bedroom, I eye the garment bag protecting the most perfect thing I have ever designed and will ever wear. I don't need to part the zipper to know what's housed inside. The handmade dress isn't white. Not quite. Audrey and I spent hours on the color, choosing an exact shade that would suit my skintone, complement my eyes, and pair well with--while simultaneously standing out against--a million little details I've spent far more hours pouring over. Both Audrey and I have always understood the importance of little things, registered that something being understated wasn't the same as it being nonexistent. Her eye for detail has always been admirable and it was easily the first thing I noticed about my other half's mother upon meeting her many years ago.
We both notice the way her son will always attempt to mask his sentimentality, though we're both well aware of its existence. I know it will be on full display during our celebration, communicated loudly through shared vows and toasts, quietly through whispered exchanges in any semi-private moment we can grasp, and silently through each gaze and touch I'll share with him throughout the day.
I find my way back to bed and I am fully settled with the fact that I no longer enjoy sleeping alone. I accept that I am spoiled beyond belief by someone who has already vowed to spend the rest of his life keeping me that way. And as my fingers ghost the empty half of the mattress I lie atop, I smile knowing without a doubt that my current state is one that I'll rarely experience ever again.
#sugarlucille#lost reels#ooc: shoutout to britt for getting our bbs married in my absence and holding us down#parallels baby#everyone will be glad to know that my writing is still as unwieldy as ever#script portions from the wizard of oz

Random starter for @tczier. (Steve becoming a model).
“Thanks for believing in me.” Those words held more weight than he would like them to, feeling them get stuck in his throat even as he was saying them, if only because he didn’t want to start crying. It had been so long since someone had genuinely believed in him and his abilities. More so than just the fact that he was a great babysitter, or that he could kick Demogorgon ass like nobody’s business. Believed that he was capable of doing things outside of the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, and actually succeed in them.
“I might end up hating this.” He was almost trying to convince himself of that, almost become a self-fulfilling prophecy. He could practically hear his parents scolding him in his head, particularly his father, that he was doing nothing of merit. That he couldn’t get into college, that he had failed the Harrington family. But one thing he was absolutely confident of was his looks, and his ability to work them in a way that was almost manipulative. So, modeling had come to mind. If it isn’t broke don’t fix it, right?
It was the only reason that he had gotten out of Hawkins to begin with. Richie’s belief in him. Things with Vecna had finally been taken care of, and Steve no longer had a reason to be rooted in Indiana. He knew that the kids would be okay, and he couldn’t stay behind forever when Nancy was going off to school to be a journalist and Jonathan was even getting published as a famous photographer and Joyce and Hopper were planning a wedding and getting the hell out of dodge. He couldn’t stay behind when everyone else was starting this new, Upside Down free chapter of their lives.
So he had decided to move to Los Angeles. It was so different, much different than what he was used to with small town life. It wasn’t like he hadn’t been to big cities before, mostly for the banquets with his parents, but living there had been different. And Steve wanted to pull his weight. So when he had seen the model casting call in the newspaper, he had decided that he was going to do it. He was going to use what he was good at, and make way bigger bucks than he had ever made at Scoops Ahoy or Family Video.
His thumb rubbed the back of Richie’s hand, giving it a squeeze as he waited for his name to be called. Saw the other guys that were sitting in the waiting room, making Steve’s heart sink a little. In Hawkins? He was a 10/10. Here, he wasn’t certain. California was apparently full of the hot model types. He should have known, Billy Hargrove came from here and that was the only man that had ever threatened his position as most desirable man in that small town. “I’m not even the hottest guy here, Richie. What if I’m just making a fool of myself?”
