Fifty years into their career, Los Lobos are still David Hidlago, Louie Pérez, Conrad Lozano, Cesar Rosas and Steve Berlin.

And they are still, on any given night, the best live band in America.*

On July 14 at Newark, Ohio’s, Midland Theatre, the band made the case again and again across a 100-minute set whose 22 songs spanned their recording career from 1984’s “Will the Wolf Survive” through tracks from 2021’s Native Sons (the grinding, 1950’s rock ’n’ roll of “Flat Top Joint” being the highlight) with covers of the Grateful Dead, Neil Young and, of course, Ritchie Valens thrown in for good measure.

Berlin - who played keys, woodwinds and percussion - joined in 1982. Hidalgo (guitar, accordion), Pérez (guitar, jarana, drums), Lozano (bass) and Rosas (southpaw guitar) - have been around since 1973. And with touring drummer Alfredo Ortiz finding his place since joining in 2021, the band is as tight as only a group of musicians who’ve played together for so long can be.

They came out hot, with Hidalgo singing the jangly “One Time, One Night,” followed by Rosas on the bluesy “Wicked Rain.” And it was immediately clear that though their hair is whiter and thinner and Lozano spends a portion of the show seated on his amp, Los Lobos are having as much fun as ever as the Wolves smiled at one another, interacted with the crowd of what Rosas calls “music lovers,” and cued solos with eye contact and the swiping of arms.

So it went that a funked-up version of the Dead’s “West L.A. Fadeaway” included an electrifying interlude of solos that moved from Hidalgo and Pérez’s guitars to Berlin’s baritone saxophone and back to Rosas’ grimy axe. Hidalgo sung this one - which Rosas dedicated to “all of Jerry’s kids” - along with the audience-singalong “Not Fade Away” -> “Bertha” which came later and found Hidalgo and Pérez playing in six-string harmony a la the Allman Brothers.

While “La Bamba,” as is usually the case, came last (with the Rascals’ “Good Lovin’” slipped inside), the Wolves had previously nodded to their platinum era with an exhilarating reading of Valens’ “Come On, Let’s Go” that kept the half-full house, much of which was on its feet for “Chuco’s Cumbia,” dancing like no one was watching.

Hidalgo, whose high tenor remains virtually unchanged, strapped on the squeezebox for a sinewy and spooky rendition of “Kiko and the Lavender Moon,” sung in harmony with Rosas. And then, as the band looked back to their days playing weddings in East Los Angeles, Pérez took his old place behind the kit for a bit of Spanish polka.

There was a jazzy break - and an opportunity for Berlin to really work the baritone sax - amid a chunky reading of “The Neighborhood” as the band and audience sung together: Thank you lord for another day, help my brother along his way/please bring peace to the neighborhood.

And Lobos meant it.

Returning for the encore, Hidalgo and Pérez, who turned in a blazing guitar solo, sung Young’s “Cinnamon Girl” together to fill a fan’s request. And when the aforementioned “La Bamba” ended, Lozano flashed a peace sign as he stopped to the mic to give the audience the band’s parting message:

“Be safe.”

I've known Andrew + Nicky, the husband and wife duo that are Finesse Piano and Cello, for many years. Having first came across them probably 20 years ago, whilst working alongside my father Barry James Photography, I have always loved being at a wedding with them.

As a musician myself, I've always admired other musicians. Whether it be a string quartet, a guitarist, a band or indeed a piano and cello duo, live music always adds to the mood and feeling of an event. With Finesse Piano + Cello, however, the closeness between Andrew and Nicky brings another dimension to their performance - and I will never tire of hearing them play!

With a background in music of many years and a skillset that includes composing for films and productions along with playing, you really do get an amazing creative with Andrew + Nicky. Knowing the background Andrew + Nicky both have within the music industry, it was fabulous to hear them explain why they love playing at weddings so much, even after the 4000 weddings they've performed at:

"The wedding industry's one that we really enjoy with love playing for weddings. They're always happy occasions and I think we have to reinvent ourselves constantly because there's new music coming, and all they're all different.

If you take pride in what you do and also take pride in the fun and just having that conversation, then you get a lot more out of it, and then, of course, in turn, your enjoyment hopefully gets transmitted over the audience."

I love the language both Nicky and Andrew use when talking about their playing, being more of a conversation; a musical conversation between piano and cello, and the guests listening and enjoying:

"It's communicating without actually using words. The music we play during a wedding, we look and see what sort of people we're playing for and we try and play appropriate music for that."

The variety and repertoire from film music, Disney of course, and more modern pieces, I always love hearing how Andrew and Nicky tweak their live performance to match the crowd perfectly:

"We get a lot of nonverbal feedback from people we can see that people are enjoying a certain style of music, so we'll follow it up with another one like that."

Choosing music for your wedding

Choosing the music for the big day can be such an important part of the wedding.

I remember choosing the song that Beki was to walk down the aisle to, and together choosing the songs we wanted for the signing of the register and the recession together - it was all about setting the mood, and bringing our character's and tastes out in the music everyone was to listen to.

From standing next to Nicky and Andrew many times over the years, I love the excitement that comes as a bride and groom start talking about the music for their day. Whether it's trying to describe a tune they have in their heads, that Andrew is able to pick up on and start tinkling away to on the piano or turning to an arrangement of their song, it really is beautiful.

Choosing the right music for your wedding is so special, and a little journey you get to take with Andrew and Nicky:

"We try and squeeze out of a couple what sort of music they would like for their ceremony, which is probably one of the most theatrical parts of the day, particularly for the bride although for the grooms as well.  We sculpt the music to fit how the bride walks in so we're constantly watching. It's not a case of heads down and playing the music. We're watching what's going on. We liaise with everybody beforehand, and then we will watch the bride and her entourage during the walk-in and will sculpt the music to fit rather than getting to the registrar and her groom and then pausing the music, we build it up and then rounded off, and it makes it sound as though she's arrived, and it's a great moment. We love doing it. It's because the reaction from people is fantastic. It's what makes it different from recorded music."

It was really interesting talking to Andrew and Nicky and picking up one of their #TopTips for the wedding music - and that is not choosing a piece you are too emotionally attached to for the procession, after all - with the build-up of emotions, that last thing you want is for music to trigger yet more emotion!

Hey Mark, Cameron & Jess! How are you today? What’s on the agenda besides our interview?

Cameron: Nothing crazy for me, just enjoying the calm before the storm that is going to be Midland’s 2016! My wife and I live on a small farm in a little town called Dripping Springs, TX. I’m watching our dogs harass our herd of goats through my office window at the moment.

Mark: Doing well, enjoying some pretty incredible weather here in Austin. Just ran to the store on my Harley to grab dog and cat food and now running out to Jess’s ranch west of town to write with our friend’s Liz Rose and Trent Willmon.

How did you guys all meet and what was the catalyst for you to start a band with one another?

Cameron: Back in LA, I played in bands with Mark and Jess separately for years. We all ran around the same circles and shared band members and a rehearsals space (next to a topless bar on Santa Monica Blvd) 😉

The catalyst may have been my wedding a few years back (of which both Mark and Jess were groomsmen). I actually just found footage of the first time we sat down, just the three of us and played on my mother in laws front porch. There is something special that happens when we play and sing together, so after a few more miraculous circumstances we all moved to Texas (where Jess was living) and took a chance on Midland.

What was the inspiration for your new single, “Fourteen Gears”? Did you also help come up with the treatment for the video?

Cameron: Jess wrote the breadth of “Fourteen Gears”, which was another one of the early moments that defined and solidified the creation of this band. As for the video, I’ve always loved Martin Scorsese’s The Last Waltz. The scene where they play “The Weight” on that sound stage with the Staples Sisters… it’s so heavy. We basically wanted to do a Midland version of that. Minimal lighting, dolly moves, zoom lenses, cross fading transitions, in camera light cues … it really puts you in a time machine.

Mark: Jess wrote the breadth of the song, I wrote the bridge and we all helped arrange it when we cut it back out at The Sonic Ranch in El Paso…I think Jess was writing from the point of view of a character he had created who was clearly a truck driver…the song is like that character’s theme song that’s keeping him sane while he’s out on the road away from who he loves.

You guys are bringing back the best of what made 1970-80’s with your classic country ballads, honky-tonk, and self-reflective songs. What have you learned from previous bands, collaborations and playing live that you felt you wanted to infuse into your own music?

Cameron: I grew up on Rock and Roll and soul music. Country music came to me through the California filter so it wasn’t until I met Mark in my early twenties that I was exposed to “classic” country. Jess is also an audiophile, so just when you thought you had heard it all, he drops something obscure in your lap. We were just in the studio recording with Shane McAnally. Whilst working on tones and “intentions” we were referencing Jerry Reed’s “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot” , The Stones “Tumbling Dice” mixed with the story telling of Steve Earl’s “Guitar Town” and the harmonies of Eagles. Right there is a slice of Midland’s influences and the bar we have set for ourselves.

Mark: That you simply have to write and play songs from an authentic place that affects you, that makes your soul stir. With Midland, we are writing and playing songs that do just that, which is what makes this project so special to us.

You are all talented in your own right with other various projects. What have you learned from your other professions that have helped or inspired you with MIDLAND?

Jess: I never finished college, but I went for a while as an English Literature major. Songs are like short stories so I probably was able to take something from there by creating a narrative in three minutes. I also designed clothing and jewelry for a short time. I think music is very visual and closer to aesthetic design than some people realize.

Mark: Just to be the guy having the most fun with the best attitude and the hardest work ethic…I try to draw perspective everyday and remember just how lucky I have been and how amazing it is that I get to create and perform music for a living. I’m living the dream and that is not lost on me!

If you could hang out with a legend, living or dead (musician, artist, actor, etc.) who would it be? Where would you go and what would you do?

Cameron: I just want to hang with Tom Hanks all the time. Is that too much to ask? I would love to have met Glenn Frey and ask him a million questions. I believe he is my single biggest inspiration.

Jess: I would hang out with Gary Stewart. We would just sit in a dive bar somewhere because that was his natural habitat. He’s my musical hero.

Mark: I would hang out with Magnum P.I. on Oahu in the 80’s and help him solve a case or two while taking in the joys of the island in his Ferrari GTO.

Nowadays, everything is so instant…you press a button and it’s yours ala Spotify, Soundcloud, iTunes etc. What was the first album, that you can remember saving up your hard earned cash and purchasing for yourself?

Cameron: Van Halen’s, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

Jess: I know the first cd I bought was a Jimi Hendrix greatest hits cd. I also remember going in and trying to by Dr. Dre’s “The Chronic” but they wouldn’t sell it to me because I was too young.

Mark: It was a cassette of DEF LEPPARD when I was probably around 8 years old. My brother and I were already really into music at that point as we had asked for and received a cassette boom box for our 7th birthday. Up until that point, we just stole cassettes from our parents and our older sisters. I remember how cool I felt going to the record store with my Mom and picking out Def Leppard!!!! Hahahaha.

What was the first song you fell in love with and why?

Jess: “Winds Of Change” by The Scorpions. I think it was that whistling part that got me.

Mark: For me it was a Townes Van Zandt song called “Pancho and Lefty” performed by Merle Haggard and Willie Nelson. It was my Mom’s favorite and we listened to it on repeat driving in our old stock truck hauling cattle from Arizona to Montana. That song’s emotion and melody truly captured my young imagination and I could see the characters living this tale as I gazed out the window and saw the ever changing majestic scenery of the USA roll out before my eyes…from that point on country music was sacred to me.

Who is in your current playlist at the moment? Anyone we would be surprised to find in there?

Cameron: There’s a singer song writer named Steve Young (not the football player) that I just uncovered. His stuff has been difficult to find! Someone help!

Jess: The only thing maybe surprising in my playlist is some stuff from the 1920’s and 30’s. I’m very into early American songbook stuff. Folks like Jimmie Rodgers and Hoagie Carmichael.

Mark: I’ve been listening to a lot of Jerry Jeff Walker and Don Williams…the one that you may be surprised with is Jonathan Wilson…absolutely love this guy and would love to work with him as a producer some day. I think he’s a genius.

What’s on tap next for MIDLAND? What are you guys most excited about for this year?

Mark: We just signed with Big Machine Records ! We are thrilled to just get our music out there for people to hear and to tour!

A full day ahead for Stephen and myself starting with bridal preps for Katie and her bridesmaids right through to the evening celebrations at the gorgeous Chateau Impney, which incidentally was completed in 1875, a jewel in the crown of Droitwich. While Stephen stayed with Katie right up until she left for church with her Dad in her car from LOVE WEDDING CARS I set off to meet Dave and the guys at St Annes at Streetly. They looked “window perfect” in their suits from Duncan James, and I must say were very calm and relaxed, it's wonderful what a break from school can do… Next to arrive were the beautiful bridesmaids and Katies Mom, and we all then along with many onlookers eagerly awaited the bride's entrance. We were not disappointed as she alighted from her Love Wedding Cars vintage style wedding car looking absolutely stunning in her gown from Designs on You and carrying a beautiful bouquet from Bramble Hedge Florist (Queslett). An extremely lively ceremony saw Katie and Dave become man and wife.After a few photos at Church, including a complete confetti storm it was on to the Chateau to celebrate the wedding of these childhood sweethearts. The gardens at this stunning venue provided the perfect backdrop for both the group shots and the couples personal portraits, not just your normal groups though as Dave, the Dads and the groomsmen had their shirts torn open to reveal “Super hero” T shirts,which was also the theme for the Grand ballroom and the dual design cake from Love Cake Supplies of Bourneville. Stephen and myself stayed with Katie and Dave to capture the speeches, cake cutting and a superb “show stopping” performance by Katie and two of her bridesmaids. as the band, Sparks said follow that if we can… Our time with this lovely couple and their equally lovely family and friends then came to a close….
