Visited Newcastle Carers today and it was lovely to see this quote up on one of the meeting room walls. The quote comes from some of the lovely feedback we had from members of Newcastle Carers who were part of the #inourspace six months artist residency and exhibition I was part of earlier this year, funded by @lovenewcastle #newcastleartsteam. W E C A R E // N E W C A S T L E // 2018 . . People often say commercial work, as though it’s a bad thing or that it doesn’t connect with their practice. That doesn’t have to be the case. I loved working in this campaign with @sail_creative @mandybarkeruk @iamicreative #newcastlecarers and @djwtalent . One of the first of its kind in terms of socially engaged commercial thinking. I love doing work like this 💯 this is why I wanted to do what I do. . . #WeCareToo is an innovative new campaign that has been created by a group of young adults from Newcastle who have a caring role. All of the young adult carers involved in creating the #WeCareToo campaign receive support from us. They feel that their lives would have been very different if they had received that support sooner; this inspired them to raise awareness about the information, advice and support that is available for carers so that other people in similar situations can get the help they need. 1 in 12 young adults in Newcastle have a caring role, and often struggle with no support. Georgia, 20, cares for her disabled mother and her autistic brother, both needing a high level of support and care. It takes time and energy to attend appointments, support them emotionally and help with day-to-day tasks. “For a long time I didn’t realise that I was a carer, I didn’t realise that there was support out there for me. I am hoping that this campaign will help other people that are looking after a family member or a friend with an illness or disability to get support for themselves. I want to encourage anyone who has a caring role to contact Newcastle Carers, they can really help.” A carer is anyone who provides unpaid support to a friend or family member who is ill, disabled, has mental health problems or is misusing drugs or alcohol, and could not manage without help. There are approximately 7 million unpaid carers in the UK. . . Such a brilliant cause, such a brilliant team. All quotes are from young carers, names have been changed to protect identities. #WeCareToo Newcastle Young Adult Carers have fully embraced the creative art workshops I am running for them every week this term. This week we had a great time learning batik and fabric embellishment and there were some very beautiful results which we can work further on.
