Anmer Hall has frequently hosted the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their three children during school holidays and, more recently, during national lockdowns.
The couple homeschooled their children from their Norfolk home during 2020, and they continued to conduct royal engagements there via video calls, which gave the public glimpses of the “countryside bolthole, as Hello! describes it.
A source has told People that “there’s no airs and graces” at Anmer Hall, which is very much “a normal, busy family home”. Little is known about the inside, which is purposely “kept very private”, but its contemporary interiors are reportedly testament to Kate Middleton’s “accessible style choices”, a style advisor told the Daily Express.
The country pile is located in the Queen's Sandringham Estate, and was gifted to the Duke and Duchess by the Queen following their wedding.
The family home’s history
Originally constructed in 1802, Anmer Hall was home to the family of Hugh Van Cutsem Snr, the late university friend of Prince Charles, and visited by Princes William and Harry when they were children, Town and Country reports. Van Cutsem Snr's sons, William and Nicholas, are godfather to Prince George and Prince Louis respectively.
Anmer Hall reportedly has ten bedrooms, and boasts both a swimming pool and private tennis court. Following the birth of Princess Charlotte in 2015 the couple took up full-time residence in Norfolk, as William focused on his family and flying career with East Anglian Air Ambulance.
Since then, William has given up his flying career to take on more official royal duties and, with Prince George and Princess Charlotte now at school in South West London, the family had been spending considerably less time in Norfolk prior to the pandemic. It is, nevertheless, a firm favourite of the family for school holidays.
Refurbishment and renovation
The installation of a new orange roof
The couple spent several million pounds refurbishing the Georgian mansion. Documents posted on the King’s Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council website showed that the prince and his wife had applied for planning permission to demolish their existing tennis court and create a new one with an artificial grass surface a little further from the house.
The plan was part of a “comprehensive overhaul” of the grounds at Anmer Hall, intended to improve privacy for William, Kate, George, Charlotte and Louis. They are also said to have a new “glazed garden room” and a new kitchen, where the couple reportedly spend a lot of time socialising. The Queen “couldn’t get her head around” this habit when she first visited them at Anmer Hall, one insider told the Daily Express: “In her mind, that is where all the kitchen staff work.”
Images of the "old kitchen" that was replaced (The Everett's are bespoke kitchen designers who previously leased Amner Hall)
Refurbishment for the vast house, described by the Daily Mail as a “secluded fortress”, was largely paid for by the royal family from private funds and is reported to have cost £1.5m. The decor has been brought into line with the royal couple’s tastes, and involved an extensive tree-planting programme to afford the Duke and Duchess greater privacy.
The property was also given a new orange roof, visible in the picture below.
The Duke and Duchess have also completed a £4.5m refurbishment of their residence in Kensington Palace, Apartment 1A, which was formerly the home of Princess Margaret.
Royal Respite
Anmer Hall itself is a “comfortable, unpretentious Georgian” building, says art historian Sir Roy Strong in The Telegraph. With large sash windows, Anmer “has a gentleness to it”, but it is well located with ready access to the Duchy, Windsor, London and several racecourses.
“There is very little going on at all at Anmer,” one source told the Telegraph. “It is certainly not a social hotbed and there aren’t any fabulous shops to visit.”
The royal family are able to go about their business in privacy there with a “battery” of close protection officers on duty round the clock and all visitors “closely monitored”, the source said.
Since their wedding in 2011, both William and Kate have been spotted in the local area shopping, visiting pubs and taking the children to enjoy activities such as pottery painting. The Duchess is also known to have taken up beekeeping, a popular pursuit of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, too
Inside the Household
The Duke and Duchess have tried to keep their household staff “to a minimum”, Hello! says. In March 2016, they placed a discreet advert in The Lady magazine, which gave a “fascinating glimpse” of what life is like at Anmer Hall, “a life with children, dogs and jovial family meals at its core”, says the Daily Telegraph.” The couple were keen to emphasise in the advert that “discretion and loyalty is paramount.
However, it appears working in the royal household is a tough job. In May 2017, the Daily Mail reported that a housekeeper who earned £35,000 a year to cook, clean and shop for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children in their Norfolk home quit her job after the post became “too demanding”.
Sadie Rice had worked at the couple's country home for two years, but reportedly refused to spend more time at their London home, Kensington Palace.
Utmost Privacy
Following the birth of Princess Charlotte, police in a Norfolk village near Anmer Hall handed out letters warning the media not to harass the royal couple, saying William and Kate had asked photographers to respect their privacy after being subjected to “a number of intrusions” by paparazzi with long lenses.
The three-paragraph letter said that the couple “have a more than reasonable expectation of privacy” while they are at Anmer Hall and on the Sandringham Estate.
It continued: “There have in the past been a number of intrusions into the privacy of the Royal Family which in the main have been as a result of professional photographers using long-distance lenses, not only to observe the Royal Family, but also to photograph them going about their activities on the estate.” As Town and Country notes, “A no-fly zone over the property likely does more to thwart the paparazzi, though.”

How Businesses Use Social Media For Marketing
Social media marketing is the technique used to market products, services and businesses on social media platforms and websites. Companies and organisations use social media sites to communicate with your audience to establish your brand, increase sales and drive web traffic. This includes posting excellent content on your social media pages, listening to and engaging your fans, reviewing your metrics, and running social media ads. Significant social media sites (at present) include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest, YouTube, and Snapchat. There is also a range of social media management tools that help companies get the most out of the social media channels mentioned above. For example, Buffer is a forum for social media management tools that can help you achieve success in your social media marketing. We want to help you succeed, so if you wish to develop a brand or improve your business.
A Quick Overview of Social Media Marketing
Social media marketing started with publishing. Businesses posted their content on social media to drive traffic to their websites and, hopefully, sales. Yet social media has evolved well beyond just being a place to broadcast content. Nowadays, companies use social media in several ways. For example, a business that is concerned with what people think about its brand should track social media interactions and respond to specific references (social media listening and engagement). A company that wants to understand how it performs on social media should evaluate its scope, interaction and sales on social media using a social media analytics tool. A company that wants to reach a particular market on a scale will run highly targeted social media advertisements (social media advertising). As a whole, this is often referred to as social media management, and there are companies like ours who provide these services.
5 Top Tips For Successful Social Media Marketing
Strategy Before you jump right in and post something on social media, take a step back to see the bigger picture. Your first move should be to think about your social media marketing plan/strategy. Set Your Goals Ask Yourself, how can social media help you to achieve all of your business objectives? Many organisations use social media to increase their brand visibility. Some people use it to boost their website traffic and to generate more sales leads. Social media platforms enable businesses to can build brand awareness, develop a community of followers, and to also act as a customer service platform for clients. Which Social Media Platforms Should You Focus On? The best social media platforms are: Facebook Instagram Twitter LinkedIn Pinterest YouTube Snapchat and one of the newest platforms - Parlour
There are also smaller and up-and-coming sites, such as Tumblr, Tik Tok, Telegram and Anchor, as well as social media channels such as Messenger, WhatsApp, and WeChat. Once you get going, it's easier to select a few channels that you think your target market is on than to be on all channels. What Type of Content Should You Share? Which sort of content is most likely to attract your target audience? Are these images, videos, or links? Is this educational or entertaining content? An excellent place to start is to build a marketing persona will help you answer these questions. And it doesn't have to be the same forever; you can always change your plan on how your social media posts work. Planning & Publishing Social media marketing for small and medium-sized enterprises starts by gaining a strong presence/following on social media. Nearly three billion people (3,000,000,000!) use social media. Through being active on social media sites, you are offering your company the ability to discover your potential customers. Publishing on social media sites is as easy as posting a blog post, if not easier. You can add images and videos like standard blogs, and you can even schedule your upcoming posts to save you management time. Also, to ensure that you optimise your impact on social media, you'll need to publish super informative content that your audience likes at the right time and frequency. There are now several social media programming tools, such as Buffer Publish, that can help you post your content automatically at your desired time. It saves you time and helps you to reach out to your audience when they are most likely to interact with your material. Listening and Engagement When the company and social media continue to expand, discussions about the brand will rise too. You should expect people to comment on your social media posts. They'll also tag you in their social media posts, or send you a message directly. You may manually search all your messages through all social networking channels, but this isn't effective, and you won't see updates that didn't tag the social media profile of your company. You can use a social media listening and communication tool; instead, it will aggregate all your social media connections and posts, including posts that have not tagged your corporate social media profile. Analytics Along the way, whether you're publishing content or engaging in social media, you 're going to want to know how social media marketing performs. Were you engaging more people on social media than you did last month? How many encouraging comments did you get for that month? The social media platforms themselves provide a very basic level of this information. You can use the full range of social media analytics tools available, such as Buffer Analyze, to obtain more in-depth analytics information or to compare easily across social media platforms. Advertising When you have more money to grow your social media marketing, social media advertising is an area you can consider. Social media ads will allow you to reach a wider audience than other people and organisations who follow you. Social media advertisement networks are so secure nowadays that you can also choose exactly how to show your ads. You may build target groups based on their demographics, desires, actions and more. When you run multiple social media advertising campaigns at once, you can consider making bulk changes, automating processes, and optimising your ads using a social media advertising tool. Keir Starmer pushes to scrap one-member-one-vote for Labour leader and return power to MPs
Keir Starmer pushes to scrap one-member-one-vote for Labour leader and return power to MPs
Keir Starmer is pushing to scrap Labour‘s one-member-one-vote approach to party leadership elections and move to an “electoral college” system dominated by MPs – in a move that would likely lock the party’s left wing out of power for good.
Labour’s ruling national executive is expected to hear the plans at a meeting on Friday evening, with the leadership’s intention to put the change to the party’s annual conference next week.
Under the system, the vote for leader would be split one third between MPs, one third between unions, and one third between constituency Labour parties – in contrast to now where all party members get a single equal vote.
The change, which critics say is a factional move to permanently disempower opponents of the leadership, would return Labour to a similar system to the one used until 2014, when one-member-one-vote (OMOV) was introduced by Ed Miliband.
Labour MPs, most from from the left of the party, broke ranks on Tuesday ahead to slam the proposal – warning that it would undermine party democracy.
“As a Labour MP, I should have no greater say in leadership elections than other Labour members,” said Rachael Maskell, a shadow culture minister on Sir Keir’s front bench.
“The members are ultimately the Party and they should equally elect their leader. OMOV is the most democratic system. Let’s respect our members, let’s respect Party democracy.”
Veteran left-winger Jon Trickett said on Tuesday night that any such move was “a wrong headed backwards step which ought to be rejected” while former shadow chancellor John McDonnell said it was “critical Labour MPs make it clear they reject this proposal and reassert right of members to elect leader”.
Keir Starmer’s office and Labour’s press operation declined to comment on the proposals, which are yet to be formally published but which have been widely briefed.
No Labour MPs have yet publicly endorsed the plan or made arguments for it, but many moderates privately support it as a way of marginalising their factional opponents. Some commentators have proposed various justifications for removing the vote from members, such as that MPs represent non-member constituents, that members cannot be trusted, or that the party leader needs to be on good terms with MPs.
The party leadership also plans to change the rules to make it harder for party members to challenge unpopular MPs with a “trigger ballot”. Most political parties in the UK have members select their candidate for MPs before the election, but Labour sets a higher bar for challenges to prevent members from ousting MPs and ruining their careers.
Under Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership the rules were changed so that an MP could be challenged for the party’s nomination if one third of either party branches or affiliate branches in a constituency voted in favour of it. However, the LabourList website reports that the leadership wants to raise this bar to a majority rather than one third.
Sir Keir was elected leader on a left-wing platform aping Jeremy Corbyn’s 2017 manifesto, but has quickly shed many of his his campaign promises and appointed Blairites to key positions in the party.

The proposed rule change for electing the party leadership is expected to effectively lock the left out of the leadership in future because the right wing of the Labour Party dominates the parliamentary Labour Party (PLP). The rule change to make it harder to challenge sitting MPs would “double lock” the system so that MPs remained overwhelmingly aligned to the party’s moderate, right or centre.
If the rule change is to happen the proposal it must first get through the NEC and conference. Left-wing NEC members say it should be ruled out of order because it was “sprung” on them at the last minute. Passing the motion would also require the support of moderate-led unions, including Unison, USDAW and the GMB.
It is currently unknown whether the leadership could get the plan through the party’s conference. While the party’s left has still come top in all internal elections since Sir Keir was elected leader, tens of thousands of mostly left-leaning members are thought to have left the party, with more suspended or excluded by the party’s staff ahead of the annual meeting.
The current one-member-one-vote system was originally introduced on the initiative of Labour’s right wing to make it harder to elect left-wingers to the leadership, but the system’s original proponents miscalculated their own popularity and ended up with Jeremy Corbyn.

Sunday, August 5th 2018 – Stonehenge, Amesbury, Wiltshire
For many, many years we’ve driven past Stonehenge on the A303, usually getting to somewhere to stay for Thruxton, but we’ve never stopped off. Even as a child on motoring holidays to Cornwall, we’d never stopped. So as we were less than an hour away in our B&B at Great Bedwyn, we figured Sunday morning might be a good chance to give the place a try. We reckoned it would be busy, but maybe not as busy perhaps as it might be after lunch. We booked tickets in advance, and turned up at the scheduled time.
Getting in was complicated by the need to queue to collect our pre-booked tickets. The tickets on the day queue was almost empty and going a lot faster, but I wouldn’t count on that always being the case. The ticket office is around a mile and a quarter from the ticket office, and as it was a sticky, hot day we didn’t fancy the walk that much. The shuttle bus queue was fairly short and the buses seemed to be fairly frequent. They were, but what we hadn’t bargained for was that they weren’t stopping for those of us in the ordinary queue, but were picking up the boatloads of cruise passengers who are bussed into the site en masse in the morning and who apparently take precedence over the likes of you and me. I wasn’t terribly impressed by the fact that in the time it took us to get onto the third bus that actually stopped on our side, around 10 bus loads of cruise passengers had been picked up and taken to the stones. We waited 25 minutes, and I could have walked it in that time. I don’t care if they are on a tight schedule because they have to do Bath and Oxford as well in the same day… I really don’t. We had places we were scheduled to be as well.
Up at the stop at the other end, the view of the stones more than makes up for the wait time. I wasn’t sure what to expect because I knew you weren’t allowed to get right up among the stones, and they have therefore been fenced off, but actually the “fence” wasn’t at all intrusive, and provided you didn’t stop on the corner right near the entrance, you could get a clear look at the whole complex from behind the low barrier, from where the sheer size is obvious. Also, the small “lumps” (I’m sure there’s a technical term for them) that presumably hold the lintels in place.
It’s good to see the site put into context, and there are a number of information plaques around the area that can provide extra knowledge for those that want it. Of course the site itself has been the source of many a theory in the past, before archaeology became a thing, and for that matter since. My personal favourite is probably the tale told by Geoffrey of Monmouth in his “Historia Regum Britanniae” (History of the Kings of Britain) written in 1136, which claimed that the stones were put up by Merlin. Fantastic claims aside, it seems many things about the monument will never be known.
However, some things are known, and according to the information provided, we know that the place was started with a henge monument around 5,000 years ago, and that the stone circle is late Neolithic and dates from around 2500 years later. The site is presented as a landscape rather than just the stone circle, with all sorts of structures dotting the surrounding landscape, including the oldest known items, four or five pits from the Mesolithic period (8500 to 7000 BC), which seems to have held posts for something. What exactly, no one knows. For that matter, why exactly they ended up where they are no one knows. Lynne posited the theory that they’d simply got fed up of dragging the stones, and had erected the circle at the place where they’d run out of energy!
There is a suggestion on the English Heritage website that perhaps, given the south of England was heavily wooded, but it seems Salisbury Plain wasn’t, perhaps that was why it was chosen, and that it was its relatively open nature that made it the obvious site for what seems to be a complex of monuments including a bunch of burial mounds that line the top of the next ridge along, and that form the current World Heritage site along with Avebury. We didn’t go to Avebury because we’ve both been before, and frankly it creeps me right out for reasons I can’t pin down.
The Unesco site has this to say about the two areas: “Stonehenge is one of the most impressive prehistoric megalithic monuments in the world on account of the sheer size of its megaliths, the sophistication of its concentric plan and architectural design, the shaping of the stones – uniquely using both Wiltshire Sarsen sandstone and Pembroke Bluestone – and the precision with which it was built.
At Avebury, the massive Henge, containing the largest prehistoric stone circle in the world, and Silbury Hill, the largest prehistoric mound in Europe, demonstrate the outstanding engineering skills which were used to create masterpieces of earthen and megalithic architecture.”
To return to the history of the actually stone circle, apparently the earliest known major event was the construction of a circular ditch with an inner and outer bank, in about 3000 BC. There may have been some wooden structures inside the ditch, but there definitely were a number of pits, 56 in fact, referred to as the Aubrey Holes. Again, no one knows for sure what the pits were for, and they may have held more posts, or they could have been for stones.
There’s no doubt about the burials and cremations though. There are around 65 cremations, with possibly 150 people buried here. It’s definitely the largest late Neolithic cemetery in the Britain. And it’s the resulting archaeological finds that are so fascinating. For example, there’s a very fine mace head made of banded gneiss that appears to be of Breton origin, axes from as far apart in England as Cumbria and Cornwall, and a piece of Niedermendig lava from northern Germany. One of the burials has also proven to be that of a man from what is now Switzerland, the isotope analysis pinpointing his origins. None of that seems to bother the corvids that have made it their territory.
Some of the animal bones have been found to come from Scotland so it was clearly an international site of considerable importance in its day, and presumably also well known to all at a time with no news generating mechanisms as we know them. Much of this information is to be gained from the small museum that you can visit back at the visitor centre and shop, the museum having an exhibition about the foods raised, cooked and eaten in the era of the stone circle’s main use.
Anyway, apparently in 2,500 BC the stones were finally placed in the middle of the monument, with an inner horseshoe and an outer circle of sarsen stones, which are larger than the smaller bluestones which were set up between the sarsen shapes in a double arc. Some 300 years or so later the central bluestones were rearranged to form a circle and an inner oval, later altered to a horseshoe, and an earthwork avenue was built connecting Stonehenge with the Avon river.
A hillfort, which came to be known as Vespasian’s Camp despite being far too early to be anything to do with the Romans, was built in 700 BC to the east of Stonehenge overlooking the Avon. There is a Romam connection though, as many Roman objects have been found, and more recent excavations suggest it remained an important ritual site for the Romano-British population.
It then seems to have been ignored by history, the area being used for sheep farming, creeping into the written record from the 14th century onwards. It then became a centre of activity when, in 1897, the Ministry of Defence bought much of Salisbury Plain for army training exercises, setting up barracks, firing ranges, field hospitals, an airfield or two, and light railways were established. There is even a memorial to some of the early pioneers of aviation on the site, the Airman’s Cross.
Visitor numbers started to rise when the railway to Salisbury opened, and with the addition of roads that crossed Sailsbury Plain even more people could come to see the stones. However, when an outer sarsen upright and lintel fell in 1900, the owner, Sir Edmund Antrobus, organised the re-erection of the leaning tallest trilithon in 1901, the beginning of a period of conservation and restoration projects that lasted until 1964. In 1918 the site was given to the nation by Cecil Chubb, who bought Stonehenge from the Antrobus family in 1915. It is now the responsibility of English Heritage, while the land around the site is in the hands of the National trust.
With the heat increasing, as a final fling for the morning, having looked at everything we could get near, we took a look at the replica Neolithic huts out the back of the visitor centre. One of them was being lived in today, with a swallow’s nest in the centre of the hut’s roof, and a little agitated head sticking out and chirruping at anyone that got too close. It was very well disguised so I’m not sure how many people actually saw them. I was pleased that I did.
We slipped into the shop, bought a postcard and a fridge magnet, and left without spending any money on books. I did leave with a copy of the guidebook though…

10 Design reveals images of Edinburgh’s New Town Quarter Development
10 DESIGN’s architectural concept for Ediston and Orion Capital Managers’ New Town Quarter development in Edinburgh has been revealed.
International architecture practice 10 Design has led on a unique design concept for one of the largest redevelopment projects in Edinburgh’s city centre which will transform the former Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) site on Dundas Street into a first-rate mixed-use development.
Earlier this year, Ediston and Orion Capital Managers submitted plans for New Town Quarter –previously referred to as New Town North–for planning following an extensive public consultation exercise through the pre-planning process.
The proposed mixed-use development will create a new urban centre, providing a significant addition of public realm, including office, hotel, retail and residential components. Proposed new buildings to Fettes Row are designed to respond sensitively to the adjacent listed buildings, whilst retaining and strengthening the existing ‘green edge’ boundary of the site.
The development will replace the existing car park and ex RBS office with a new integrated development that respects its unique location bordering the World Heritage Area in a respectful but contemporary design that will reconnect the King George V Park with both the New Town and the wider urban context.
Gordon Affleck, Design Partner at 10 Design, commented:
“The site has offered a unique opportunity to reconnect the park to the north and west of the city. Respecting both the sensitivity of its location with the New Town and the complexities of the physical restrictions of the site has proved challenging, however we believe the quality and diversity of the development uses and the new public realm will create a focal point and positive amenity for both the local and wider community.”
The proposed project considers a series of landscape and amenity terraces to maintain vistas while creating new pedestrian and cycle routes, greatly improving permeability in this part of the city. The key route will connect Dundas Street through the heart of the site to King George V Park with a variety of interconnected landscape terraces that absorb the steep level changes of the site creating a new East-West narrative, transitioning from a more green environment of the park to the more urban setting of Dundas Street.
This route will create a new public plaza accommodating retail, food & beverage (F&B) where community events can take place. Combined with structured planting design to create both an activated landscape link to the park while providing new entry points for the key components of the development maintaining a car free pedestrian environment across the site.
Robust, low maintenance natural materials, with high performance and energy efficient building envelopes along a series of green decks and elevated landscaped spaces, and the addition of health and wellbeing components (such as a new gym) will create new amenities for both the local and wider community to add quality of life and sense of place. All this in combination with balconies, terraces and green roofs will help to create a sustainable and economic development.
Ross McNulty, Development Director of Ediston, commented:
“We are aware this is a complex and large site, with important links to some of Edinburgh’s finest streets and green spaces. We are making sure we take the right amount of time to consult properly with local people to deliver a market leading development to benefit both the community and the wider city.”
The form and character of the proposed development will create a new urban hub while being sensitive to the surrounding area. It is anticipated to have a population density in line, or lower than165 people per hectare, which is the average existing population density of the locality (based on current census data).
Latest published research shows the development is poised to bring significant economic benefit to the local area and wider Edinburgh economy. The report by engineering and environmental consultancy The Waterman Group reveals that the operational phase of the development will create more than 700 full-time jobs whilst generating an annual GVA (Gross Value Added) economic uplift of £34.4 million to the regional economy. Additionally, it predicts that the construction phase will create a further £27.7 million GVA at a regional level, creating a further 60 full time jobs.

How to get into the 3-pack
What is the 3-pack?
The 3-pack is the list of results that appear when someone is searching online for a local business. If you are a local business you need to be in the 3-pack, especially if someone is searching on a smartphone. Why? Because research has shown that a very high percentage of these local searches end up in a purchase decision.
What factors affect how to get into the 3-pack?
Relevance, Prominence and Proximity.
In 2014 Google adds Proximity as the 3rd leg to its search algorithm
In 2014 Google added Proximity as the 3rd leg to its search algorithm, joining the previous two legs which predate “local” searches:
Proximity – Describes the physical distance of a business from the origin point of a search.
Relevance – The degree to which a listing’s website content matches the search inquiry.
Prominence – The strength of the business in terms of its domain authority calculated by traffic, backlinks, etc.
Following that move Google My Business was launched, giving local businesses the opportunity to be found even if they didn’t have a website.
The Proximity Factor
Proximity became the most powerful factor influencing which businesses appeared in the 3-pack. What this means is that if your business is located close to the location of the search, then it is more likely to be in the 3-pack. The further away from the location of the search that your business appears in the 3-pack the better it is for attracting customers. Local SEO is all about trying to push the boundaries of the location for the purpose of appearing in the 3-pack.
Here is a client that has been following our advice for over a year:-
Property letting agency
Here is another client that has been ignoring our advice:-
Restaurant
This grid view plots the results of local searches performed in each of the grids getting further away from the actual location of the business concerned. Where the colour is green the business will be in the 3-pack for that search term. Any other colour and it will not be.
The property letting agency is Belvoir Lettings King’s Lynn and I have their permission to mention their name. I will not mention the name of the Restaurant but will say that it is one of the best in Norwich.
The grids illustrate very clearly that having a strong local SEO programme in place results in a far wider reach for appearing in the 3-pack based on the location of the search. This results in far more customer enquiries and revenue. Local SEO has proven to be better value for money than most other forms of marketing.

NHS visor workshop among incredible entries vying to win lockdown-themed Shed of the Year
An NHS visor workshop supplying PPE to care workers and a garden bar are among the stunning entries in an annual Shed of the Year competition.
The 2020 Cuprinol Shed of the Year contest celebrates the best sheds in the land and also includes two new lockdown-specific categories – Lockdown Repurpose and Lockdown New-build.
The Lockdown Repurpose category celebrates those who have transformed their sheds in response to the coronavirus outbreak, including Sarah McGoldrick who responded to the PPE shortage in the early days of the pandemic by supplying frontline NHS staff with visors from her shed workshop in Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
Teacher Ashley Bates from London swung into action as soon as schools closed by setting up The Shed School – a free online educational platform for key stage one children.
The Hobbit House, belonging to Julie Twydell, can be found in Kent and has been entered in the Budget category of the competition

The Cosy Cabin in Northern Ireland is described as a great place to wind down and continues to be a place of tranquillity amidst the current Covid19 pandemic
Stand Up from the Shed HQ is the only shed that is being used as a stand up venue for a weekly live streamed comedy show
Pallet Hollywood has a big tv, dartboard, double door bar fridge and loads of booze including cocktails, says its owner
The Lockdown New-build category hails those who have overcome the challenges of lockdown. These include Joe Melton from King’s Lynn in Norfolk who built a back garden bar to compensate for a dream holiday to Florida being cancelled by the pandemic.
And retired art school lecturer Michael Roberts from Bromley, Kent whose former pupils include Damien Hirst and Steve McQueen, who created an elaborate Chinese-style pagoda.
Elsewhere on this year’s shortlist Pat Crook, from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, has recreated a beach hut to provide her father who suffers from dementia with soothing surroundings.
Pallet Hollywood by Mark Killick in Hampshire has everything you need to self-isolate while having a good time
Bucko’s Bar is described as a 1970’s Irish Pub designed by Len Lavelle. It is based in Cheshire East and was built by putting two sheds together
Used year round, the Cosy Cabin provides warmth during the cold winter months, and is the perfect backdrop for long summer nights around the barbecue or camp fire with friends and family
Adrian Backshall from Eastbourne, East Sussex has built his shed on a railway trolley. Kirsty Woodbine, Marketing Manager for Cuprinol, said: ‘We’ve been astonished by the quality of entries to this year’s competition’
Jane’s She-shed was originally built as a Japanese Summer house, but was never finished by her predecessors. She has turned into a luxury Summer house, with sunbeds, sink, fridge for garden parties
The Wooky is mostly built from reclaimed and recycled wood (pallets etc). The windows were from a free-cycle website, and trimmings such as copper came from an old boiler and other ‘rubbish’.

The owner said: ‘I work from home and really wanted to get out of the house and at the same time, our existing garden shed was totally rotten. We decided to get a log cabin in its place which acts as my office as well as an extra sitting space, thanks to a cosy little sofa’
The description of the shed reads: ‘A peaceful sanctuary to escape our urban surroundings. Ideal for the occasional tree hugging and entertaining’
Adrian Backshall from Eastbourne, East Sussex has built his shed on a railway trolley, while Colin Furze from Stamford, Lincs uses his shed to come up with inventions including a full-size Star Wars Landspeeder which he shares with his millions of fans on his YouTube channel.
Judges whittled down hundreds of entries to compile this year’s shortlist of 27 sheds.
There are nine categories including Budget, Summerhouse, Unique and Unexpected.
A winner from each will be decided by public vote, then an overall winner will be crowned by a panel of shed experts with a giant golden crown for the winning shed.
Alongside eternal shed glory, the overall winner will also receive £1,000, a plaque and £100 of Cuprinol products.
Head Judge and founder of the competition Andrew Wilcox said: ‘More than ever, the events of recent months have shown us what a valuable role sheds can play in our lives.
The owner of S.H.E.D said: ‘S.H.E.D is an arts venue, a conversation starter, a dialogue enhancer and a research facilitator. S.H.E.D is entirely dedicated to artistic research through public engagement and co-production’
The owner said: ‘Before lock down we was supposed to be taking a once in a lifetime trip to florida with the children but it got cancelled so I set to work building a bar we could all enjoy in the garden with a slushy station to an adults evening party place’
Silas the Silo was a redundant grain silo from a farms skip. It has been lovingly converted to a BBQ hut/gazebo for a unique experience
The Shed is primarily used as a workshop but can easily be converted into a home office/studio as it has 2 double door entrances, windows, hardwood floor, power, lights (internal and external) and a stained glass skylight with light. It was built after lockdown cancelled two of the owner’s holidays
The name- The Dragon’s Rest- is an homage to the owner’s Welsh father who would have loved to sit by the fire pit & chat over a pint
This shed has been a family project during lockdown. It is a play house for the family’s five year old son. The shed will have perspex windows once complete
90% of huthaus is made from recycled and reused materials. The windows are old crittall windows rescued from a demolished house
The 2020 Cuprinol Shed of the Year contest celebrates the best sheds in the land, attracting hundreds of entries
This year’s contest highlighted the coronavirus pandemic by introducing two new lockdown-inspired categories

30 Covers, 30 Days 2017: Day Twenty
Every November, during National Novel Writing Month, thirty professional designers volunteer to create book cover art inspired by novels being written by aspiring authors from around the globe. Why? To encourage new, diverse voices, and help build a more creative world.
30 Covers, 30 Days is presented in partnership with designer and author Debbie Millman. Read more about these NaNoWriMo 2017 novels-in-progress, and the cover designers, below.
Fantasy = Reality
A Young Adult novel being written this November by YWP participant Troye in the United States.
When Yvaine King was five years old she, her chihuahua Tristan, and her dads moved to the woods in their little Airstream to film a movie. They had only planned to stay a few months, but when the movie became a TV series, they ended up staying more than ten years, which gave Yvaine plenty of time to become friends with Lynn Garside, a girl who lives just up the hill. Even though the two had opposing views on many different things, they bonded.
Now in her late twenties, Yvaine returns to those woods, this time filming her own work, inspired by her family history. She already wrote a top-of-the-charts movie, but due to some teenage stupidity on her part, she gave the script to her dads, completely cutting herself out of the deal. Now her dads are living the celebrity life because of that film; and, now, she’s determined to prove herself.
Told in alternating scenes from her film and her childhood, Yvaine tells a story of growing up where fantasy is a reality, friends are family, and death is always hiding in the forest, whether it be the grim reaper or someone closer...

Tips for Buy to Let in King’s Lynn
Buy to Let in King's Lynn
Are you considering investigating buy to let in King's Lynn? Buy to let mortgages are designed for individuals who want to buy a property with the intention of renting it out. It is against the UK regulations to rent out your property if you have a normal residential mortgage, without informing your mortgage lender. The mortgage lender will be obliged to change your mortgage to a special “buy to let” mortgage which has different terms. The lenders will take into account the likely rental income that a property is capable of generating when they consider a loan application.
Nowadays, more and more people are investing their money in bricks and mortar. Lenders, on the other hand, are focused on providing the best mortgage products and not losing money through lending on properties incapable of yielding enough income to pay the mortgage back.
Here at The Mortgage Bureau, we have experts who can advise you on the best buy to let mortgage deals that suit your specific situation. We can advise you as you build your rental property portfolio is that is your objective.
Why Use A Broker For Buy To Let?
Although buy to let may seem as simple – get a mortgage for your new property, rent it out and then use the rental income to pay back your mortgage and make a capital gain as the value of the property increases – it is easier said than done.
There are several different things to consider before you get a buy to let mortgage.
For instance, each lender will have their own formula for how much rental income is likely from each property, regardless of what you may think. Similarly, the maximum loan that will be available is also dependent on the deposit that you can pay.
Besides that, the cost of conveyancing, mortgage arrangement fees, running costs of the property are also considered during the process. Some lenders assist investors by taking into account their salary, but not all of them do this.
The majority of the lenders require at least a 20% deposit and the maximum loan amount is linked to the monthly rental yield. And if you are not already a property owner or you cannot prove alternate sources of income, things can become pretty difficult.
We Can Help With Your Buy to Let in King's Lynn
At The Mortgage Bureau, we have years of professional experience and top experts who are able to offer you guidance and answer all your questions. Having fully understood your circumstances and objectives, we will carefully search through all the available lenders and make sure to find you the most suitable offers to consider.
In simple terms, our company does all the hard work for you to find you the best deal from the whole of the market. Doing this yourself is not possible as only some lenders deal directly with borrowers and, in any event, the process would take many hours on your own.
Property has historically proved to be an excellent investment compared with savings accounts or the stock market. It has provided a consistent return over the long-term and attracted many to become landlords. Partly in response to this, there have been many changes to the taxation of buy-to-let properties during recent years making it a less simple choice. We are always up-to-date with the regulations as they change, and we ensure that our clients comply with the letter of the law to avoid any serious consequences.
If you need help with your first buy to let property purchase or you want to add another property to your current portfolio, our experts at The Mortgage Bureau office in King's Lynn can help you.. Give us a call today!
About King’s Lynn
King’s Lynn is the first town you come to when entering Norfolk by car from the North or West, sitting on the A47, A17 and A10 trunk roads. It also enjoys an excellent train service to London King’s Cross via Cambridge.
The award-winning Lynn Museum tells the story of West Norfolk and it’s past in a glorious interactive tour, where you can examine the skeletons of Anglo Saxon warriors and even Egyptian Shabti figures. For a more Maritime history tour, wander through True’s Yard Museum, which is all that remains of the town’s old fishing community.
A short walk to the old King's Lynn Saturday Market Place and you can step back in time once more with a tour of the town’s old Gaol House where, for over 400 years, King’s Lynn most notorious citizens were imprisoned. An excellent audio tour really brings the history to life and younger visitors can even dress up as gaolers and prisoners for a taste of what the Victorian justice system was really like.
King’s Lynn’s redeveloped town centre has everything you need for a day of shopping and is brimming with cafes, bars and pubs for you to relax and refresh yourself. Grab an evening show at the town’s Art Centre or Corn Exchange, which has played host to many a pantomime, ballet show or famous comedian. Both situated close to the famous Tuesday Market Place, which was once used to burn witches at the stake, but is now used on a day to day basis as a central car park. During the summer, this is turned into the town’s free entertainment extravaganza ‘Festival Too’, which has grown in recent years and attracts crowds of 15,000 to watch big names in entertainment. During the February half term, the King’s Lynn Mart takes over the car park, as it has done in one form or another for over 500 years.
The King’s Lynn ferry is also a staple sight and is still used today to transport local people across the Ouse to and from West Lynn. In the centre of the town near the railway station sits The Walks park, where you can feed the ducks, play a game of football or just sit on the grass with a good book. The Walks’ original bandstand still sits by the river, as does the Red Mount Chapel.

New from Every Movie Has a Lesson by Don Shanahan: COLUMN: New Year’s Resolutions for the Movie Industry for 2020
(Image by Muharrem Aner for Getty via The Daily Beast)
Plenty of regular everyday people make New Year’s Resolutions, but I think bigger entities, namely movie makers and movie moguls, need to make them too. Annually, including this ningth edition, I have fun taking the movie industry to task for things they need to change, even if I get to do it every week in a different ranting way on my “What We Learned This Week” column contribution for the Feelin’ Film Podcast website. Loyal readers and followers of that podcast and column will get my cadence. I have no false internet courage to be a Twitter troll. As always, some resolutions come true while others get mentioned and reiterated every year. Enjoy this year’s hopes and dreams, as we enter a new decade!
#1: It’s all cinema.
Rant after rant, click after click, retweet after retweet, boy did ole Marty Scorsee start a fight when he looked down on Marvel films this past fall. It’s been a hand-wringing soapbox passing game since. I don’t mean to sound regressive like #AllLivesMatter versus the true need of something like #BlackLivesMatter, but someone needs to tell Mr. Scorsese that it’s all cinema, from every cheesy and trashy film to every astute and austere film. That’s from Cats to The Irishman and everything in between. They are made by creators aiming for storytelling, entertainment, and expression. They just do so to different degrees and for different audiences. So, respectfully, Marty, STFU.
#2: Don’t stop supporting minority voices.
Led by Barry Jenkins, Spike Lee, Marielle Heller, Lynne Ramsey, and others, 2018 was a banner year for diverse talent creating movies. 2019 felt like a slight exhaling lull from 2018’s volume. Still, 2019 was an extraordinary year for female directors, led by Greta Gerwig, Lulu Wang, Olivia Wilde, Celine Sciamma, Jennifer Kent, Julia Hart, Catherine Hardwicke, Kasi Lemmons, Melina Matsoukas, Gurinder Chadha, Anna Boden, and Elizabeth Banks. Hollywood, keep these doors opening. Don’t just do this for tokenism. The audiences are coming.
#3: Disney, slow down your own releases.
We get it, Disney. You dominate, but your movies are feeling less and less special when they are everywhere. And that includes Disney+. Like I said last year, I remember a time when there was only animated Disney film a year. It was huge, important, and it mattered. It’s hard to multiply care when there are a half-dozen or more between Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and their own house brand choices. I know that to their suits, they don’t care because Aladdin and The Lion King each made their billion dollar goals. Still, imagine the anticipation if there was scarcity. That billion turns to two billion. Make them better and make them matter.
#4: Speaking of streaming services, keep respecting Netflix.
This is a bit of a repeat from last year. Roma broke Netflix’s glass ceiling at the Oscars and the perceived bias and beef seems to be subsiding. The streaming service has four legitimate Oscar contenders this year in The Irishman, Marriage Story, The Two Popes, and Dolemite is My Name. Matching another resolution from last year, it appears Netflix, through coup-level business deals, is choosing quality AND quantity. That’s true clout and it’s earning them credibility. They continue to revitalize the mid-range budget market and give indies and documentaries wider and better chances to be seen that fighting for multiplex screens. I saw it all the time. Netflix is not killing the business. It’s just advancing it. Now they just need to work on a competitive price point to Disney+. They’re going to bleed casual subscribers if they keep costly double their newest and most formidable competitor.
#5: Please let Adam Sandler turn a new leaf.
For years, Adam Sandler was a regular appearance in these resolutions and then I gave up trying. Before Uncut Gems in 2019, I legitimately and truthfully had not watched an Adam Sandler movie in nine years. I didn’t need Jack and Jill to give up on him and the repetitive manchild garbage he was making. I had no regrets abstaining from his career. Hot damn, though, did he supernova with Uncut Gems. Please let this career resurgence be a true new trajectory and not a one time thing. Don’t let him dangle a role of two like Eddie Murphy and go back to the low-hanging fruit garden. He’s back and I want more.
#6: Adam Driver and Florence Pugh will be the stars of the 2020s.
Even with a big second half and huge 2019, I won’t call Adam Driver the star of this decade, but I have a good feeling he will be the star of the next one. I’ll give this past decade to Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper, Ryan Gosling, and Christian Bale before Driver, but few actors have his crossover appeal and towering potential right now. Need proof? Pick anything from this year, but especially Marriage Story. Watch him win the Oscar to kick off his 2020. As they say, the sky (and for him, the galaxy), is the limit. His white-hot female equivalent is Florence Pugh who carried a tremendous 2019 with Fighting With My Family, Midsommar, and Little Women. She is a dual Oscar contender for those latter two roles and has Black Widow to start 2020. We see many ingenues come and go, but, like Driver, her range across genres is formidable and will keep her around and successful for a very long time. If you need one more name and talent to watching, keep an eye on Kelvin Harrison, Jr. from Luce and Waves.
#7: If you’re a celebrity, get off Twitter.
This is another returning and welcome resolution from last year. Twitter continues to be the cesspool of bad opinions, internet courage, and the worst of fandom. Stars don’t need to kiss those rings or embrace that toxicity just to get over. Do it with your work, not your access. Establish your reverence there and not in the mudpit.
#8: This next decade challenges ahead. Meet them creatively.
The 2010s brought a swell of nostalgia regurgitation like we’ve never seen with peaks and valleys across James Bond, Star Wars, Star Trek, Mission: Impossible, Jason Bourne, the MCU, the DCEU, Transformers, Pirates, Ghostbusters, Planet of the Apes, Rocky, Rambo, Despicable Me, Men in Black, The Terminator, Toy Story, Ocean’s 8, and every possible Disney re-imagining. Try as the greedy studios may, surely the noise of all that cannot continue another decade. Creative bankruptcy has a limit and it’s going to run out and crash hard. The 2020s have the challenge of creating new properties and experiences because the old stuff won’t last forever. With the close of a Star Wars saga and a massive MCU phase to finish 2019, we stand at the edge wondering what’s next and what can top what’s been done. It can’t all be new Avatar movies. Your decade, your move, Hollywood. Give us something good. In the meantime, we’ll be on the couching binging your streaming services.
