What's up with the fact that all wuxia stories made by south koreans are set in imperial china and never in korea. "Records of the King of War" is the only exception I can find, but it's the kind of exception that only proves the rule. Even stories with a transmigrated protagonist never portray him as wishing to visit Korea, they always stay in Sichuan or Hunan or wherever.

Ill be the first to admit homestuck has its flaws and some glaring ones at that and it isnt perfect but like
I feel confident saying that homestuck was a once in a lifetime experience when it comes to the medium of webcomics and what it did to the online space in general.
To this day i have yet to find any webcomic series that really does anything as massive as what homestuck did. None of them are as grand as what homestuck managed to do with its story telling, its gifs, its animation and soundtrack. Hell the fact it even has animations and a soundtrack absolutely blows my mind. These are things ive never seen other webcomica do. Homestuck was a juggernaut in the online webcomic space and did revolutionary things both in its presentation as well as its story telling. Becuase it told a story in such a bizarre and unique way it stood out from anything else ive read.
Some other webseries have tried to do the same kind of story telling that homestuck did. But never achieved that same level of magnitude and scope that homestuck did. Which is another reason homestuck is so special.
Another thing that sets homestuck apart is its Sheer popularity. Other webcomica have blown up and done popular but none have held on to the same level of popularity that homestuck does. You still routinely see homestuck posts on twitter and tumblr, you still see homestuck content to THIS DAY! and not only that, but every 4/13 all the social medias get flooded with homestuck posts and it always ends up trending. A monument to the sheer popularity of the webcomic to this day.
And i feel like part of it is how accessible it is (despite whatpumpkins best efforts). You dont need to pay to read it, you have people who have made a functional site to read it, you have youtube videos on the lore and doing read throughs of the story. And Alot of people can just hop into it despite its daunting size.
Like i said, homestuck is a once in a lifetime thing and i wont argue it isnt

You know, webcomics shouldn't be making me feel old. Like, I went on a weeklong binge on reading a couple webcomics, then realized that once, they were on Keenspot then moved to their own place, that only made me feel a little old when remembering Keenspot. No the thing that got me feeling really old was that the current comic is the kids of both the comics I used to put in my daily/triweekly watchlist. To put it in context.
Male viewpoint character's origin comic: I was a senior in HS when it started, and it ended in 2015.
Female viewpoint character's origin comics: first comic started about the same time as above, ended in 2004. Then its domcom spin off started later that year and likely ended the same time as the dude's.
It then got me thinking, I saw the rise of the net through these comics, and others that have ended or may as well have.
I've seen all but two of my 2004-2010 watchlist (and that's with me going voracious around 06-08) either end, or go out.
I saw scans that varied in quality to almost all digital. I saw the rise and fall of video game comics. I saw the fall of webcomics in 90% of the Belfry becoming pony askblogs. I saw some of my favorites end without warning or seem to zombify. I've seen a couple of the creators gain infamy and fame.
If you told me at 15 I'd be sitting here waxing nostalgic over some comic that was made on the same shit I was chatting on IRC with, and that they'd be using some kind of non MS Paint application, and it was all created by people who were about my age or younger, and that I'd see both successes and failures on it, I'd have called you crazy. The internet was for IRC, the SCFA/VCL and shitty fanfics, not comics that would kill my 56k dialup connection and still make me feel some measure of wistfulness years after they had ended.
So here's to you webcomics, you somehow kept me entertained for 20-ish years, despite some of the genre failures you produced.
