I saw mentioned in a recent comment that the USS Reliant in the film Wrath of Khan was originally designed to face the other way (upside down). This made me curious, so I did a little research.
The story goes:

The three ultimately came up with a compressed version of the Enterprise. âWe had long postulated that the circular saucer said, âThis is Starfleet navy,â and it used engines that looked pretty much like those on the Enterprise.â They eliminated the engineering hull and attached the nacelles to an extended saucer section instead.
Except the nacelles looked over the saucer in their design. Lee Cole remembered how they ended up underneath it. Harve Bennett, the filmâs producer, was working abroad before they began filming Star Trek II. âWe were mailing everything over to him and getting him to approve it and mail it back to us,â she told Star Trek: The Magazine, âso we did our first sketch of the ship and mailed them off to him.â Bennett was supposed to sign for approval at the bottom of the sheet. âWhen he got it in the mail he took it out of the package upside down, I guess, and wrote out on the bottom, âYes, this looks very good, proceed.â So when we got it back we realized heâd approved it upside down.â
Rather than bother Bennett again, the three decided to make it work that way -- and it did. Jennings and Lee added what Minor dubbed a âroll barâ to support the dropped nacelles. Phaser banks were put in this supporting structure.

Etsy Deletes the Reselling and Gift Baskets Legal Policies In Favour of New "Creativity Standards"
This morning (July 9, 2024) Etsy released several announcements regarding what can be sold on Etsy, new categorizations for items sold on Etsy, and a new ad campaign. You can read my early thoughts on that here.
As part of this overhaul, they abolished 2 longstanding site policies, namely the ban on reselling in the handmade category, and the ban on almost all gift baskets containing commercial goods. Since they deleted those pages and didn't even mention those rules in any of their announcements, I have preserved those now-dead policies below. Thanks to Bing for still having caches of deleted pages!

Hello! I love the website for your electus comic itâs so clean and easy to follow! I was wondering if you host it on a website or make it from scratch? A lot of webcomic sites donât have any information on how they were made and I certainly donât want to copy anyones design, I would like to start posting a webcomic online one day though. Are there any tips you could give to someone new to website creation. Right direction to start in for example?
Ah im glad its easy to navigate, but I will be honest with you, I date a graphic designer who handled the whole build for me, because I so much as look at a computer wrong and it freezes up on me :')
The good news however is I watched them make it, it seemed very intuative and simple, and they were able to teach even me the back end, so adding pages is super simple. It is hosted on SquareSpace, and it comes with templates, easy to use tools, and because its so widely known and paid for, theres SO many tutorials! It's very easy to do with a small amount of effort to wacth some videos.
You can pay varying ammounts per year (and month I believe) to host, which I do, to make it available to all who want to view it without costs to them. Its not for everyone, and is from what I recall, roughly ÂŁ160/$200 a year for the domain I use, though there are varying packages and prices. Many creators choose to use comic sites like tapastic or the likes, as its a free version, but due to legalities, artists have been veering away from that to protect their creations.
Honestly, I think theres a lot to be said for youtube tutorials, people have been swearing by squarepsace for yeaaaars now, and the interface is very simple and easy compared to other web building options (wordpress im looking at you, youre terrible)
While we did not use templates or preset fonts (partner made it all custom to make it unique) the site offers SO many good options that can be edited to suit your needs, so no need for complex processes if its an option you choose to go for.

I'm doing some research and trying to read a forum, but they've locked their search function behind registration. I know you have experience with that era of the internet, so do you have any idea why they did this? Was this common practice? It just seems like a baffling design decision, and a bit tragic since the main value of a lot of those places today is as an archive...
well first of all, web forums aren't an "era" of the internet they're an ongoing style.
also the day to day purpose of a forum is not to be like a public resource archive for the general internet world but to be a place people are talking to each other who at least kinda know each other through that forum. so there's no particular incentive for anybody to decide to make the function public. which is also why tons of them explicitly keep various areas of their forums completely hidden to non-registered users too and so on.
then there's the fact that a search query running is generally much more computationally intensive for the server to be running than having someone request a bunch of individual pages. so you generally want to have a minimal amount of gating the function behind something so that random bots out there don't accidentally or intentionally overloading the server. this was especially true and a more pressing concern in the past of course, when all aspects of hosting a forum were more expensive. that's an aspect of why a whole bunch of forum packages over the years have defaulted to search and other features restricted to registered users - though on very old sites often all such features were opened to all passerby because people hadn't really thought yet of the level of harm randos might cause. this is also why many effectively abandoned but still active forums are full of tons of spam.
but yknow since you're looking at places that are apparently still running, it's probably not too big a deal to just register on them to use the search?
