in the iconic martin burning statements scene, when martin starts questioning why elias has done nothing even tho he knew sasha wasnt sasha and prentiss was going to attack the institute and elias goes REALLY quiet and says 'lets just get this over with, shall we'?? i full heartedly believe thats when elias realised that a) martin would've made the perfect archivist for the eye but not for his plan AND/OR b) he saw young gertrude in him; full of perfectly concealed rage, burning elias' work, too smart for his own damn good AND/OR c) he saw martins potential as a web avatar and thats one of the reasons he brought peter in, to sway him away from the web into the lonely (and or d all of the above)
