Data: Congress created virus aid, then reaped the benefits

WASHINGTON — At least a dozen lawmakers have ties to organizations that received federal coronavirus aid, according to newly released government data, highlighting how Washington insiders were both author and beneficiary of one of the biggest government programs in U.S. history.

Under pressure from Congress and outside groups, the Trump administration this week disclosed the names of some loan recipients in the $659 billion Paycheck Protection Program, launched in April to help smaller businesses keep Americans employed during the pandemic. Connections to lawmakers, and the organizations that work to influence them, were quickly apparent.

Among businesses that received money was a California hotel partially owned by the husband of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, as well as a shipping business started by Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao’s family. Chao is married to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Car dealerships owned by Republican Reps. Roger Williams of Texas and Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania, and fast-food franchises owned by Rep. Kevin Hern, R-Okla., received money. So, too, did a law firm owned by the husband of Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, D-N.H., and the former law firm of Rep. Matt Cartwright, D-Pa., which employs his wife.

Money also flowed to a farming and equipment business owned by the family of Rep. Vicky Hartzler, R-Mo., and a regional casino company led by the husband of Rep. Susie Lee, D-Nev.

Members of Congress and their families are not barred from receiving loans under the PPP, and there is no evidence they received special treatment. Loans were granted to Democrats and Republicans alike, something President Donald Trump’s campaign was quick to highlight when records showed donors to his campaign coffers were among the earliest beneficiaries.

Hundreds of millions of dollars also flowed to political consultants, opposition research shops, law firms, advocacy organizations and trade associations whose work is based around influencing government and politics.

While voting, lobbying and ultimately benefiting from legislation aren’t illegal, advocates say the blurred lines risk eroding public trust in the federal pandemic response as Congress begins debating yet another round of coronavirus relief.

“It certainly looks bad and smells bad,” said Aaron Scherb, a spokesperson for Common Cause, a watchdog group that was also approved for a loan through the program. “We think it certainly should be illegal” for members of Congress to benefit from a program they created, he said.

As of June 30, the Treasury Department program had handed out $521 billion to industries including manufacturing, construction, restaurants and hotels.

Treasury identified just a fraction of the total borrowers Monday, naming only companies that got more than $150,000. Those firms made up less than 15% of the nearly 5 million small companies and organizations that received assistance.

Many of the lawmakers connected to loan awards emphasized they weren’t part of the application process.

A spokesperson for Pelosi said her husband, Paul, is a minority investor in the company that owns the El Dorado Hotel in the wine-country town of Sonoma, Calif. Paul Pelosi has a 8.1% stake in the company, valued at $250,000 to $500,000, Pelosi’s office said.

“Mr. Pelosi is a minor, passive investor in this company,” said the Democratic speaker’s spokesperson, Drew Hammill. “He was not involved in or even aware of this PPP loan.” The firm, EDI Associates, is listed as a recipient of a loan between $350,000 and $1 million.

New York-based Foremost Maritime Co., founded by Chao’s parents and run by her sister, was cleared for a loan valued between $350,000 and $1 million. McConnell, a Republican seeking reelection in Kentucky, said Tuesday: “Neither my wife, nor I, have anything to do with that business and didn’t know anything about it.”

The Shaheen & Gordon law firm in Dover, N,H., got a loan of $1 million to $2 million. The firm is owned by Jeanne Shaheen’s husband, William Shaheen. A title company partially owned by William Shaheen got a $160,000 loan and a half dozen companies he partially owns or another relative owns got loans, below $150,000.

Jeanne Shaheen said she “was not involved in any way in applying for those loans nor do I have anything to do with their businesses, and Congress had no role in processing PPP applications.”

Williams, one of the wealthiest lawmakers with a net worth of over $27 million in 2018, received a loan for his Roger Williams Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership in Weatherford, Texas. Williams is president and CEO of JRW Corp. of Fort Worth, which is listed as receiving a loan of $1 million to $2 million. A spokesperson for Williams didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

At least five car dealerships owned by the husband of Rep. Carol Miller, R-W.Va., also received loans, each ranging from $350,000 to $1 million, the data show.

Other lawmakers, while distancing themselves from the loan process, sought to portray the PPP program as a success story.

Hern’s Tulsa-based KTAK Corp., a management company for several McDonald’s restaurants, received $1 million to $2 million. Hern isn’t involved in the day-to-day operations, but “he is happy to share that the family business was able to keep all employees either at their current level of employment or move part-time employees to full time,” Hern’s chief of staff, Cameron Foster, said.

Full House Resorts, a Las Vegas-based casino company led by Lee’s husband, Daniel, got two loans totalling $5.6 million, according to the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company said the funds would be used to rehire several hundred employees and prepare for reopening two casinos in Indiana and Colorado.

Lee’s office said she had no knowledge of the loans and no influence over the application.

Hall’s family is reported to have called police to check on him and at a hotel and Hall admitted to huffing the air dusters in the room and was arrested and put in the Parker County Jail and posted $1,500 bond the next day.

This is also a great option for individuals investing in search as part of their ongoing website and digital marketing strategies. Here’s how to estimate CPC in Ahrefs: Create an account or log in. Click the Keywords explorer option in the top menu. Ensure Google is selected at the top of the field. Type your keyword(s) into the field. If you are wanting to do multiple keywords at once, separate them with commas or line breaks. Click the button with the magnifying glass. CPC is represented in the third box in the top row. Set up a Fake Campaign in Google Ads If the cost of a third-party keyword research tool turns you off, you can still use Google’s Keyword Planner. You just have to go through the campaign process and then turn the campaign off. Note: By doing this, you’ll see a temporary $50 authorization which Google uses to verify your payment information. This is typically removed within a week. If you don’t turn off your campaign, your card will be charged every 30 days or when you reach your billing threshold. Be sure to review Google’s billing policies yourself before taking this advice. Here are the steps: Sign up for a Google Ads account. Go through the prompts to set up your first campaign. Son Flies Fighter Pilot Father's Remains Home to Texas After 52 Years

More than five decades after he disappeared in a war zone, the remains of a North Texas fighter pilot have finally come home.

During the height of the Vietnam War, Air Force Col. Roy A. Knight, a 36-year-old from Millsap, deployed to Southeast Asia.

His team never saw a parachute deploy.

Because the region was so hostile at the time, search and rescue efforts were limited, and he was never found.

It would be decades before a joint U.S./Laos team would begin investigating and excavating the area, searching for any sign of Knight and other soldiers who went missing during the war.

In January of this year, they got the breakthrough they were looking for.

The Department of Defense confirmed the team recovered possible human remains and life-support items near the area where Knight's plane went down.

They were sent to a lab for analysis. And on June 4 -- with the help of dental records -- Knight was finally accounted for.

"What incredible support we've had," said Roy Knight III, Col. Knight's son. "The active duty military personnel who actually went in there and spent almost a month on dad's crash site, excavating the area -- the fact that they were able to do that is remarkable."

Thursday, 52-years after he was shot down, Knight's remains completed the long journey home. One of his sons, who is now a pilot for Southwest Airlines, got to fly the plane on its final leg into Dallas Love Field.

"The Air Force and Southwest Airlines coming together to make it possible for my brother to fly dad on that last leg -- I can't say enough," said Knight. "They truly went way beyond themselves to make this happen. And I just could not be prouder to be associated with both of them."

Knight, members of his family, local law enforcement, and the Patriot Guard Riders lined the tarmac to greet him as he landed.

Then, after his casket was loaded into a hearse, they formed a procession around him, guiding him to Weatherford, where he'll be buried this weekend.

"It's a day we never thought would actually happen," said Knight. "And the fact that it did is remarkable. It's actually miraculous. There's a lot to this. There's competing emotions. He's coming home, which is a very good thing – but there's also the aspect of we're re-living the loss. We're really becoming reacquainted with all that in a very real manner...but I had no idea [the reception] was going to be like this. It's absolutely amazing."

ODESSA, Texas—A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the families of two men killed in the July 18 fiery crash on Interstate-20 in Ector County, Texas. The families of Kewalkumar Vyas and Ivan Dominguez-Jaimes filed the lawsuit against Weatherford US, LP and its driver, Samie Lee Whittington.

Jaimes was driving a Nissan Sentra sedan, and Vyas was a passenger in the Nissan. Moments before the crash, the Nissan and several other vehicles had slowed down for roadway construction. Whittington was driving a Dodge Ram 3500 truck towing a 20,000-pound piece of oilfield equipment when he slammed into the back of the Nissan at a high rate of speed. The Dodge hit the Nissan so hard that it came to rest on top of the Nissan after pushing it into the guardrail. The violent collision caused both the Nissan and the Dodge to catch fire, ultimately killing both Vyas and Jaimes.

The Dodge was owned by Weatherford US, LP, and Whittington was an employee of Weatherford. Whittington was cited for failing to control his speed.

The attorneys of Glasheen, Valles & Inderman conducted a post-crash vehicle inspection of the Dodge, including a data download of the airbag control module. The inspection revealed that that the Dodge did not brake until approximately one second before impact.

“The last-second braking we found is consistent with the type of distracted driving we, unfortunately, see more and more of nowadays,” said attorney Kevin Glasheen. “Through this lawsuit, we will discover why Weatherford’s driver was not paying attention to the vehicles slowing in front of him.”

(Reuters) – A white former Texas policeman was jailed on Wednesday for 15 years over the deadly shooting of an unarmed black teenager in a Dallas suburb last year that fueled a national debate over possible racial bias in U.S. policing.

The same jury that convicted Roy Oliver, 38, of murder on Tuesday in the death of Jordan Edwards, 15, deliberated for several hours before deciding his prison sentence.

Oliver’s conviction was a rare instance in which an officer was found guilty of murdering an unarmed person.

“This case is greater than Jordan,” said Daryl Washington, a lawyer for the Edwards�� family. “We just hope there are going to be some changes.”

In emotional testimony during the penalty phase of the trial on Wednesday, Oliver’s mother asked the jury to sentence her son to the minimum five years, in large part because of the needs of his young son who has autism.

“That’s my prayer because he could still have such an impact on that child’s life,” Linda Oliver told the jury.

Oliver’s lawyer, Bob Gill, said they would appeal against the sentence, a Texas ABC affiliate reported.

Two police officers who worked with Oliver and a neighbor were among those testifying as character witnesses.

Prosecution witnesses on Tuesday included Edwards’ father, Odell Edwards, who said the last thing he told his son was that he loved him.

Oliver, along with another officer, had responded to reports of underage drinking at a house party in the predominantly black and Hispanic city of Balch Springs, about 15 miles (25 km) southeast of Dallas.

Oliver fired his rifle several times into a car with several teens inside, prosecutors said. Edwards, a standout high school student and athlete, was shot in the head and killed.

The jurors deliberated for about 12 hours over two days before reaching their verdict after a trial that began in mid-August.

Michael Snipes, the first assistant district attorney, said Oliver was a trigger-happy policeman who sent the teenager to an early grave.

The arrest warrant for Oliver said he and the other officer tried to stop a car at an intersection near the party. The other officer broke a passenger window with the butt of his gun.

Police body camera images displayed to jurors showed the car was moving away from Oliver when he fired at it.

Oliver’s defense attorney, Jim Lane, said the vehicle was a threat to Oliver’s partner that night and he reacted to save his partner by firing into the car.
