on covid-19: asian people are a virus (must read)

5 things that are problematic with this belief

definitions I'll be using (there’s a difference!)

sinophobia: anti-chinese sentiment, against China, its people, or Chinese culture. xenophobia: dislike or prejudice against people from other countries  racism: prejudice, or discrimination against a person or people of a particular racial or ethnic group, typically one that is a minority or marginalized. prejudice: preconceived opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience.

I've been seeing a plethora of hashtags on Instagram and Tumblr, rallying against sinophobia catalysed by the fatal misconception that the novel coronavirus was caused by asian people. it may be a fact that COVID-19 was first discovered in a wet market in Wuhan, China, it does not give anyone a reason to be racist against Chinese people, let alone asians in general. maybe #wearenotavirus does not sufficiently explain what’s so wrong with stereotyping asian people, so I will summarise the issue here. 

Jonathan Mok was walking down oxford street in London when 4 men attacked beat him up and shouted “we don’t want your coronavirus in our country”. Jonathan isn’t even from China. he's from Singapore.  a 16 year old korean Yani was kicked in the face on June 22nd in the Netherlands. his attacker threatened him repeatedly, calling him "cancer Chinese with your corona".

1) it absolves everyone else of any fault

when the focus is on asian people, and when people start playing the blame game, no other person, community or country thinks they should be responsible for COVID-19. its more the fault of people who refuse to abide socially distance, or assholes who choose not to wear a face mask.

2) racial oppressors are given fuel for their racism fire

inherently prejudice people exist. when the covid-19 situation started to become a global concern, prejudiced people who had no reason to act on their dislike for this particular community of people (asians), have now acquired enough “evidence” to justify being sinophobic. “stay away from asian people, they have the coronavirus”, “I always knew they were dirty”, etc. let the racist remarks roll. 

3) the age old problem: all asian people look the same

as the examples showed, asians have once again been grouped in the same category of small eyes and yellow skin, even though there are, like, 30 different ethnicities from which we descent. we are not all the same. 

4) focus! is! taken! off! the! real! problem! 

the severity of this global pandemic is not given it’s deserved attention. as of writing this, nearly half a million people worldwide have died from COVID-19. however, when people are too busy with blaming Chinese people for ‘importing’ the virus, they fail to realise that COVID-19 is not just Chinese people’s problem, its everyone’s problem. either we take it like champs and face the problem, or we will end up with a skyrocketing infection rate. 

5) we fight each other, when we should be fighting COVID-19

if there’s one thing I've learnt since the start of the pandemic, its that countries who have managed the outbreak well chose to be united, not divided. countries who have seen insurmountable infection rates have been having sad, violent side quests that distract them and weaken them from the final boss, COVID-19 (who has legendary resistance and multi-attack). resources are wasted, media attention is diverted, and society ends up in a convoluted state that worsens the state of order. 

if you only take away one thing from this, let it be that we need to stop misidentifying races, blaming them for things they did not do, and in order to get “your coronavirus our of our country”, we can start by banding together instead of tearing each other apart.

Are we surprised? Did we really not see this coming? For the past year, Asian Americans have tweeted, posted, and cried out for help. They’ve posted video after video of their elders being beaten to death, or slashed open with a boxcutter, or attacked with acid thrown in the face or lit on fire. AND NOTHING HAS BEEN DONE. Violent attacks against people of the AAPI community have gone up 150% since 2020, 68% of them being Asian women. Did we not think this was going to happen when a president in office spews irresponsible rhetoric that put a target on the backs of the AAPI community? No. Because now they’re justifying a white shooter who murders 8 people, 6 of them being Asian women, because he was a “sex addict” who was “having a bad day.” #saeed_ebadzadeh I am enraged. This coward blamed a specific race for his problems. He sought out Asian women. He murdered them. THIS WAS A HATE CRIME AGAINST ASIAN WOMEN. Call it what it is. America, we saw this coming. When people say they need help, believe them. I just read this article on #Medium by reporter, James Y Shih about three incidents involving #AntiAsianRacism in the time of the #Covid19 Pandemic. Two of them involve his personal experiences; the other involved his friend, dan. Here is a picture he took of his racist attacker just outside of a Dunkin' Donuts shop.
