Album Review: The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Chappell Roan
Going in, I'd only heard bits of Femininomenon, HOT TO GO!, and Pink Pony Club from online, but I'd liked what I'd heard, and lesbians online can't be wrong, right?
Femininomenon: From what I'd heard online, I was not ready for the way this song began, but it hit, and then the chorus a minute in hit even harder. I liked the line about online love. The chorus is catchy and fun. This went on my 'Just Fun' playlist.
Red Wine Supernova: I see why lesbians like her now. She really seems to like this sort of chorus of women repeating things back to her, which I think is funny. The beat is bopping, this one feels fun and sad. This went on my 'In Love with Love' playlist.
After Midnight: I immediately like the intro. I'm starting to get the vibe that Chappell Roan is to lesbians what Carly Rae Jepsen is to bisexuals (complimentary). This one feels like a lot of chorus, but it's a good chorus. This one also went of my 'Just Fun' playlist.
Coffee: Mixing it up with a slower, sadder, one. I like the lyrical flow. All of these songs have felt like something I can sing along to, but I really felt the urge on this one (I'm listening on Spotify with the lyrics pulled up). This one went on my 'Melancholy Muzak' playlist, it'll be one to cry myself to sleep to.
Casual: I remember hearing about this song when hearing about her opening for Olivia Rodrigo. We're still in that melancholy space, but the backing music has definitely picked up a little, and it makes this one even more emotional than the last one. Very relatable about a relationship sort of falling apart but the sex is good. This one also went on the 'Melancholy Muzak' playlist.
Super Graphic Ultra Modern Girl: We're so back, it's hot girl summer, the beat is hopping, the lyrics are flirty and fun. We're leaving all of the bummers behind us. I'm sure this song is awesome live. It's catchy and it's fun, so it's also going on the 'Just Fun' playlist.
HOT TO GO!: This song rocks. It's giving Born This Way - Lady Gaga with the fast bits, and the way she sings the bridges sounds very retro (70s?). Everything about this song is fun. The megaphone sounding section is also cool. This is going on my 'Just Fun' playlist, and my 'Mellow Muzak' playlist, which might need a different name.
My Kink is Karma: We're slowing it down again, but only a little. That first chorus hit is so good. The vocabulary and word choice is amazing. The way she says 'you' and 'karma' in this song are heavenly. And the stripped down section at the end makes the last section hit harder. This is going on my 'Break Up(beat)' playlist.
Picture You: I'm loving the 6/8 feel, and I'm getting Creep - Radio Head vibes. I also love the backup vocals, really adds to the sorrowful tone. I like the wordplay with pictures and frames. This is also going on the 'Melancholy Muzak' playlist.
Kaleidoscope: We pulled the piano back out, which reminds me of Imagine - John Lennon. The way her voice is almost whispy in this song is harrowing. This song is heartbreaking in the best way. This also goes on the 'Melancholy Muzak' playlist.
Pink Pony Club: This starts out feeling like an I Want Song from a musical, and when the chorus hits, the beat starts bopping again, but its definitely a sad bop, which is a fun cognitive dissonance. She says she's having fun, and the music would agree, but the lyrics seem to be unsure about that. I really like that almost unreliable narrator quality to it. I also like the guitar solos on this one. This one goes on the 'Mellow Muzak' playlist as well, so I can jam out to it while driving.
Naked In Manhattan: The backing vocals hit on this one too, and the screaming girls are back on this one too, which is fun and silly. This song is fun (a recurring theme). There is a lot of chorus on this one, and it is catchy, but another verse might been nice. This is going on my 'Just Fun' playlist though, so it's not that big a deal.
California: I like the lyrical flow on the intro section. This one really contrasts the last two, about big city living and having fun, and now that the novelty has worn off the plasticity of California isn't real enough. The last chorus made me feel very cathartic. This one goes on my 'Platonic* Love / (Self) Loathing' playlist.
Guilty Pleasure: This song isn't about Kraft Singles, so it's not about my guilty pleasure, but I still like it, especially the way she sings the line about "shame on me and shame on you", then the tone totally shifts into this depressive glam pop (idk if this is glam pop, but it sounded appropriate). The way she says "guilty, guilty" is also really fun. I think she ends the album on a high note. This one also goes on the 'Just Fun' playlist.
Overall, this album is a lot of fun, but with plenty of room for feelings too, sometimes at the same time. The lyrics are clever and original and fun. Have I mentioned that this album is fun? I can see why she's blowing up. I wasn't expecting to add every song to a playlist, but I'm certainly not upset by it. The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess gets a thumbs up from me.
