gotta say it now bc i've been spending so much time in the 5sos fandom where we're all super protective of our creators: I know supporting an author isn't the same. I know cassie doesn't put herself out there in the same way as zillennial musicians. and I know there are things people in the fandom disagree with her on and I'm not here to minimise that.
but everywhere I interact with the fandom and it's been like this for years now, jokes and things about how old we'll be when the series is finished and yeah it's funny to some extent but as someone who knows what pressure to create does to me, who knows how much it dries my creativity, she's on tumblr. she's seeing some of this. and we gotta tow this line and be careful: careful as to how we're treating her and also careful for the sake of fans ourselves--we don't want to be acting in ways that incidentally result in content being delayed and lower quality because she's been burnt out for ages and we're just giving so much pressure to read twp, read tbvotd and read whatever else she'll doubtless come up with after because she loves the shadowhunters world, she always ends up writing more for it even when she says she won't. and aren't we lucky for that? we love the tsc universe. and if we're old by the time it's all finished, that's the result of her loving this universe she created so much that she just kept writing for it. it's a blessing.
and maybe i sound like an aussie who grew up under a rock in the middle of the bush (which I am) saying this but. when my only queer representation was a singular jacqueline wilson book until i was 14 and read malec's story in tmi, when i've never seen another author portray such a diverse range of realistic neurodivergent characters, when i'm a half white poc with grandparents from borneo which is partially in indonesia and magnus is indonesian, I do find in myself some appreciation for her: the author who created a world of characters I see myself in and I do hope she's okay and I want her to recover from burnout, I know how much it sucks, and it still kinda baffles me how she'll share bits and pieces of her mental health experiences (and she's my parents' age!! and a lot more emotionally aware than most gen x's I know which I so appreciate) and we don't, largely, as a fandom, seem to care. like i get we're in a fandom for the characters and stories she created not her, herself, but like ???
I love seeing the artist behind the art they create. I love it when they're human and imperfect and yet we can still see the good in them that they put out to impact the world with, a legacy, and when we see their imperfections and we can acknowledge this all together, acknowledge and come together for the fans who have been hurt by these mistakes, oversights, harmful views, that are mixed in with the good. and I love it when we can still come together after this and be like, I support this creator, I want them to be okay, I want them to keep discovering love and I want to see it in their writing. and this I don't think should only apply to conventionally attractive twentysomething men who sing! maybe i'm biased in the observation that it is usually where I see the most artist support. or maybe it's actually a trend and as feminists, as people who see our dignity in more than being fuckable and more than being Perfect Leaders, we can do better.
and so i don't care when the wicked powers come out. i'll have finished my masters' degree before I finish that book series and hear the rest of kit and ty's story i started reading in high school. but that's okay. if that's what it takes to get a good story. i don't care when we get the final tec book, even though i've got two copies of the other two on my bookcase and don't know if the cover art will even be the same when the third one comes out. because we love pretty timely things but we're not owed them. and I have to say, this isn't completely true. I do care. I do want to know. I do want to experience that joy. but much more than that I want cassie to write at her own pace and I want her to enjoy it and I want her to keep discovering her own creativity and the proof is honestly in the pudding that every artist I've seen decide to do things at their own rate has ended up way more productive than before they decided that. and artists are people after all. it's what makes their art so good and forms the basis for the fandoms we're in. so I hope she knows it's okay to take her time.
#cassandra clare#tsc#tmi#tid#tda#twp#tec#the wicked powers#tlh#kit herondale#ty blackthorn#again. i really don't want to say 'she's perfect and can never hurt people'#but the point of this is that she still deserves to have freedom over her schedule and we can do our part by not being demanding to the#extent that we forget that she's human. that she's poured so much of herself into the characters and worlds she's made and she deserves to#keep looking after herself even when that means we don't get what we want as soon as we want it. we can be a loyal fandom

Do you have a scene you really liked but weren't able to fit it in a fic? Would you care to share? Do you have a most recent favorite line or scene? What is it?
*Asks are sent for fun, no pressure to answer.
Oh, this is a fun question. I've been sitting on it for a minute trying to really think on it.
When I'm writing, I treat it a lot like my other forms of art—which is to say, I delete my darlings. When something doesn't work, unless it was really a killer line, it's gone and forgotten. I had this really fun dialogue convo in one of my current WIPs that just did not fit and kinda grew rampant, so I plucked her completely, and tbh in the retrospective, I don't think it was all that clever enough to have saved somewhere else. So bye-bye she went!
Even the parts that are on my "pieces and parts" doc are more...I could definitely strengthen them. They were more a feeling that I was on to that I'd love to expand upon more in a fic where they fit, if that makes sense. I've always wanted to capture "deleted scenes", so I should really document them more thoroughly in my writing process, but no scene that I was in love with didn't make it into one of my fics!
For the second part of this, mhm. I'll keep it to my published works, haha. It's definitely not recent, but so much of Compression (my Bagginshield fic) has kept so near and dear to my heart. Particularly the scene in which Thorin and Bilbo are at the forge, if I'm being honest.
For a more recent work (if we'll do the grace of over six months as recent lol) I also adore Deadly Sins and Cardinal Virtues, and not just because I got to write it with @snarky-synesthete and @cryptic-queer-cryptid . It was fun exploring my writing style in comparison to theirs, and growing from that, too. Flexing some poetry style meeting quirky character narration. I adore anything to do with apple symbolism, and there were quite a few in that fic. The one bit that really sticks out though is —
That lust-red hair was long again. Nothing fancifully braided or anything…just enough to grab hold of. Just enough that if Furfur dared, he could reach out and grasp it. Listen to what sounds might bloom from that mouth if he pulled hard enough…beckon that throat to move so that he could bruise its apple-flesh. And, oh, Furfur would. Pluck them from the forbidden tree and bite into their knowledge. Let whatever truth they had drip down Furfur’s chin like fresh wine. Bathe Furfur anew in nakedness. Furfur would tear into them—teeth to Crowley’s core—if it meant that he was the only one to know the apple. Gorge himself on the fruit and not spare a drop for the soil. The soil hadn’t deserved Crowley. Hadn’t deserved their blood, their skin, and certainly not whatever precious wine might pour out of their ecstasy…and Furfur would give them only the most tantalizing finish. Dig into their body until Crowley could only remember the moment where the serpent had swallowed a stag, or where the deer had pierced the snake.
I love experimenting with this sort of style, and I think again, overall, my writing is so much stronger for having written this with two wonderful authors. I've got a few good lines cooking in some WIPs, but I feel like I'm getting lost in the sauce of this ask and all of my stacked WIPs, haha. So I'll save those good lines for when they're published.
Thanks for the ask!! :)

HIII!! can i ask, how do you write Mordecai Heller?? THANK YOUU!!
hmm Ill try to answer this best I can and try not to ramble too long but we'll see how that goes... Im not gonna act like im an expert or whatever, this is just my thought process ig? ALSO Im ace and so is he, and I add my own experiences into my writing. Anyway the long version here:
so first thing's first!! READ THE COMIC ALSO THE SIDE COMICS ALSO ALL THE EXTRAS bc esp the extras, you get to see a lot of his personality pre-Marigold. It's two very distinct points in his life - I'd venture to say that pre-Lackadaisy and early Lackadaisy Mordecai are also very different (and that makes sense - he was a kid, and he was with the Lackadaisy crew for 7 years). He has a very distinct character progression that in my opinion is very interesting and well-written!
actually, p much all lackadaisy characters are well-written, but mordecai is a fun case because he just has so much going on: his social skills are abysmal, and he doesn't seem to find it a problem. he has committed brutal murders and executions and considers them 'just business'. he doggedly pursues discrepancies. he fixates on things being neat and symmetrical if possible. He can deal with things not being that way, for a time (note when he's covered in bloody and filthy from a job, he doesn't freak out - because that's Business (tm) and he can just wash up anyway. But a driver getting a snot mess all over the car he has to drive in all the time? Unforgivable.) he grew up in squalor and has a serious phobia of spiders and rats. He's emotionally repressed in more ways than one. He's queer and is deeply uncomfortable with people (especially women) touching him or showing interest. He still thinks about his sisters fondly. he also thinks they're better off without him. He actually found a friend (or more) in Viktor and he'd never, ever, ever say it, and his way of keeping his friend out of crime and 'protecting' him was by shooting his kneecaps. his sense of humor is crap, and he doesn't understand why his mannerisms would be considered amusing. he got into crime at a young age, doing gangster's finances for them. as a kid.
im missing some other tidbits, but you get it. the dude is real interesting to think about and write, to say the least.
I think a lot of writing mordecai, esp if you're writing a more romantic fic or even if it's just platonic - he's so closed off! part of why the Savoys are so interested in him is they've worked with him a year and he just doesn't loosen up or talk much about himself. he and viktor knew each other seven whole-ass years and you think they ever talked about their families? how they came to know atlas? what they thought about the job? granted, Viktor is just as closed-off himself, but you get what im saying. he has a serious problem with letting people in, and part of writing him is getting a crowbar and figuring out which spot to put it in and bend it juuuust enough to open something up.
ok that metaphor went somewhere weird, but you get me. and, if im being honest, a LOT of what i channel is my own asexual experience. I used to be very touch averse, especially to the opposite gender - to the point where i'd panic if I felt a man was "too close" (i.e. less than 2 feet) and "lingering" (aka minding his business). I didnt mind my friends hugging me, but I didnt really like the cuddle sessions my female friends wanted to do, and after a point, I disliked hugs from my male friends. if a guy was crushing on me? Hell no, he wasnt going near me, even if I thought he was cute too (when I was younger I DEF had a thing for my female friends too, but i registered that as 'gaaaaal paaaals' for the LONGEST time until I accepted I was bi) There was like - an undercurrent of fear and anxiety. It took me a long time to identify why. while other people seemed delighted when people they liked held their hands and hugged and kissed, it sent me into a panic.
eventually i figured out my thought process: physical affection will inevitably lead to sex, and bc i thought i was straight, there was the terrifying thought of ... oh god if i date a guy he'll expect me to have sex. oh no oh no oh no-
(and no, no one taught me much about consent or taking things slow or talking to your partner. i had to figure it out, which sucked.)
all this to say ... when I write Mordecai, especially in a romantic sense, I kind of channel that anxiety I felt in my teens and early 20s. and like, this is the 1920's!!!!* Not to mention his upbringing, and of course his line of work - where he definiately cant have feelings getting in the way of murdering someone. I think this adds up to someone whose repressing themselves - their sexual thoughts (or lack thereof), memories of family, romantic thoughts, platonic thoughts, and so on.
I like to think - again, this is fanfiction, I seriously doubt it'll come up in the comics - in a romantic relationship (or even an intense platonic one), he gets intense about it. Because Mordecai is an intense guy - you can't hatchet up someone "because i was told to", or kneecap a friend you wanted to "protect", or switch sides to your father figure's rival and pretend like you betrayed everyone just to investigate that father figure and not be, uh. some kind of Intense. I often think that, in a relationship, his jealousy and confusion/apprehension around affection and sexuality would be just as intense. And eventually, the feelings of loyalty and devotion ... once he finally lets himself have it. Because I also think, to some degree, he doesn't think he should have it - just like he thinks his sisters and mother should just leave him behind.
when im writing him in the romantic sense - as I began to accept and understand my sexuality, and talk through my feelings with my partner (also generally have better mental health, my touch averseness got a lot better.** Again, Im also kind of projecting my feelings and experiences onto Mordecai regarding this. I like to think that, once he really trusts someone and allows them to touch him, other barriers begin to tumble down. its like raw nerves being touched sometimes, but he steadily gets used to it and eventually takes solace in it (now getting him to ADMIT that srfjsdfs--)
anyway! As always, fanfic is fanfic. You are free to characterize this murdercat however you wish. These are just the jumbled thoughts that run around in my brain.
* Asexuality, like homosexuality and many shades of queerness, was considered an illness. IF anyone even acknowledged asexuality at all - its definition and terminology hadn't really caught on until the 1970's, though the Kinsey scale attempted to address it (and Jennie June attempted to write and define this in the 1920s, but I seriously doubt her writings were widespread).
**A stranger can brush past me or put a hand on me and I only have a few seconds of anxiety. My friends and family can hug me for a while, or I can cuddle up to them. I don't mind my husband cuddling or kissing me at all anymore; he's actually the one person I can tolerate sustained affection from. A huge part of this change came from accepting and understand my asexuality as part of me. I wasnt "messed up" and "broken".

Oh hi!
I'm Phyn! I write things. I'm not going to get into a bunch of identity stuff, but I'm queer, I'm an adult, and I like writing queer adult stuff. Mostly horror (see: queer) and absurdity (see: the world)
I have degrees in english, theology, and more theology, which just means I have a bunch of experience doing critical thinking and analysis of storytelling, and enough imposter syndrome that I don't know how to put that on a resume.
FANDOMS!
If you're already following me it's probably for Pillars of Eternity, TMA, or LOTR/Silmarillion. I cycle through hyperfixations every few years. It's still TMA/TMAGP right now. You can find my TMAGP sideblog here, where I just collect art.
Other things I like: Fallen London, everything by Pia Foxhall/not_poignant, re:dracula, SILT VERSES, Rivers of London, Murderbot, Critical Role, Saga, Wicked+Divine, anything by Neil Gaiman, I Am in Eskew, norse myths, egyptian myths, jewish myths, the dragonlance books (don't judge me they were foundational), pretty much everything Mike Flanagan makes, and much much more
WRITING!
I'm on ao3 as Phynoma! What do I write? Well. I write in-depth explorations of characters placed in harrowing situations which draw out the very inmost parts of their vulnerabilities and--
Smut. I write smut, okay?
Almost all of these fics are explicit and PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD mind the tags, I am *very* careful with my tagging for good reason!!!!
HERE YA GO, YA FILTHY ANIMALS!
The Magnus Archives:
I mentioned this is my current fixation, right?
an extant form of life: pollen fic! You could say, maybe, that the Consuming AU uses pollen tropes, but I'm counting this as my first-ever pollen fic. Jon/Tim, Jon/Martin, maybe Jon/Tim/Martin, we'll see if Sasha gets thrown in there. Ongoing.
Hey, Jude: A hurt/comfort fic about what happened after Jon shook Jude Perry's hand. Jon & Georgie & the kindness of strangers (not those strangers) Oneshot.
The Consuming AU: My pride and joy. My baby. I started this halfway through listening to TMA the first time and finished the original fic in about two months in time for the Rusty Quill Big Bang of 2023. Canon is basically the same, with the addition of "what if there was a Entity of Hunger, (fear of) Intimacy, and Codependence?" Also Jon is turning into a succubus. Main fic is complete at a little over 100k words. Sometimes I add one-shots to the series.
~Incredible bookbinding done by @bluejayblueskies HERE ~Art of human-looking Rhia (by me) HERE and commission of eldritch angel Rhia by @isbergillustration HERE ~Commission of Naadia by @dcartcorner HERE
Kittens & Kink AU: Fluffy Somewhere Else one-shots. Cat play. Mostly nonsexual kink. Oliver/Jon/Martin. Ongoing, until I get bored of it, basically.
Pillars of Eternity:
The In-Between Series: A series of fics following the relationship of Watcher Mirad and Aloth Corfiser, ten years or so after the events of Deadfire. The world of Eora is ripe for a new cataclysm, and these two elves are trying to finally have the relationship they've been dancing around for two decades. Ongoing, on hiatus as my hyperfixation is elsewhere. I do plan to finish it, though.
Moments: same universe and characters as above, focusing more on events that happen in canon-- ie, during gameplay. Complete.
Faetales:
Mat & Kal: Fae AU: You know how sometimes you keep writing characters and put them through a blender so many times that they just become something completely new? That's this AU. Mateo and Makalo are two ancient fae beings trapped in the human world during the events of The Ice Plague (by not_poignant) who become bound by each others' lives and deaths. They hate each other, they love each other, they're in weird psychosexual sadistic codependency with each other. They're a cat-person and a snake-person. I'm not a furry but I like some of their ideas, okay? Series complete.
See commissioned art of Mat & Kal by @shojoshark HERE
The Silmarillion:
Mistakes Were Made: Imma be real, this is just straight up torture porn. Sauron is punished by Morgoth after the loss of the Silmaril to Beren & Luthien. Basically, I was annoyed by all the fluffy Angbang fics I was reading and wanted to depict them in all their horrifying, codependent glory. Complete.
Cost of Surrender: I read a really good fic about what it took for Mairon to grovel/debase himself to Eonwe to gain his freedom and I took it a bit further. Complete.
Good Omens:
the beautiful and the fitting: pretty sure the title of this is a quote from St. Augustine, too. I almost didn't include this one because I don't even remember what it's about. Fluffy sex times with nonsexual beings, I think. I started writing it because Good Omens is one of my favorite books, but tbh the fandom for the show exhausts me and I don't know if I'll come back to this. Abandoned, probably.

outsiders week 2024 progress report to hold myself accountable
Sunday, Nov 3 - "gang" or "Ponyboy"
already chosen the fic for this one, it's the one i've been working on for the longest (literally since at least june last year) and i am soo close to being done. there's just one exchange i need to refine because i'm not satisfied with it. but it's book-verse about ponyboy after the track tryouts the same year as everything goes down* not getting the placement he wants and finding a moment of understanding with darry about it because darry's the only one who #gets it. this fic was spun out of that one line in the book where ponyboy says soda never got the importance him or darry placed on athletics
*when i was combing the book to figure out the timeline of track/what grade he was in there was a) never a concrete answer b) a lot of things that could be interpreted in conflicting ways, so i just went with he's a sophomore who was on the track team last year and track tryouts happen in like may or whatever
Monday, Nov 4 - "gold" or "Cherry"
there is a fic already started that's hopefully going to be the one for this day, but also it's probably gonna be long and it's an exploration of musical!cherry's turmoil after bob dies seeing the witch hunt against the greasers (basically it's inspired by the fact that she takes her promise ring off after JFT and not after the break up) and i want to try and do my vision™ justice instead of rushing it so this may not be done in time we'll see. if it's not done i may extract the bit where she finds out about two-bit's jumping from marcia and just post that because it's the part closest to being completed
Tuesday, Nov 5 - "rumble" or "Sodapop"
so i have two started but incomplete fics that could go for this day. one is following musical!soda & darry at home in tulsa while ponyboy is out in windrixville. it's probably my first choice, but this one is also an i don't want it to rush and lose some of its potential in the writing process so we'll see. the other one is a stevepop fic that's largely centered around sodapop's queerness (it's basically a 5 + 1 of members of the gang realizing/revealing that they know that he's not straight. evie is in it with her and steve as each other's beards and she's the catalyst for soda's own realization that he likes men)
Wednesday, Nov 6 - "hair grease" or "Darry"
fic chosen and started for this one too! (this is what i was up until like 2:00 yesterday working on 🤪) it's musicalverse again and it's gonna follow a possible explanation for why darry's called darrel now, aka him slowly transitioning to going by darrel after the death of their parents and the reasoning and rationale for that change
Thursday, Nov 7 - "rodeo" or "Bob"
...okay for this one i truly have no idea. i want to keep it vaguely on-theme for the prompts even if i end up not following them, but the two other soc-related fics i have simmering are ones that i want to also not rush and really make sure they're the best i can get them (asian!paul exploration and marbit's journey post-book) so probably not those two tbh. two ideas that i have are snapshots of various characters reacting to his death, though i haven't picked a universe for that yet, or something following the non-character prompts for once and maybe some of the characters as kids at a rodeo? i'll be honest the only rodeo experiences i've had that i can really remember are riding the docile horses on like a real-horse carousel so basically i'd just be planting outsiders characters into that experience
it is also possible that i'll end up with nothing (midterms go crazy), in which case i'll post my backup that is semi-completed, a whooole bunch of outsiders characters recreated in this picrew
Friday, Nov 8 - "tuff" or "Dally"
this one is not only decided upon but finished if y'all can believe it. i might make some revision edits before i actually post it but this one is a product of me going insane over the course of three days and writing a character exploration of dally on the train tracks delving into his relationship throughout his life with suicidal ideation
Saturday, Nov 9 - "vacant lot" or "Johnny"
unfortunately once again no idea lads. actually i lied there is something but it doesn't follow any of the prompts very much so we'll see. following the prompts i have no idea, most i've got is maybe a short thing about johnny some quiet night in the vacant lot (both prompts in one fell swoop). maybe he's looking at the stars idk. if it's the other one, which could also function as a backup for any of the days, it's a sickfic about two-bit that's actually just an excuse to write two-bit appreciating his mom. the google doc for that one is called sick TB mother appreciation to illustrate how central that is to the fic
if you've read all the way to the end hello 👋 and feel free to send any thoughts or questions my way! i need to lock in and start hustling on these soon and interaction is always a great way to improve willpower

I would like to start off by apologizing for misgendering you. I got confused because I remembered that you were a lesbian. I didn't realize that you go by they/them until after I made this post.
To go more in-depth as to what I meant when talking about that final part of the thread, I've seen a lot of SoRikus brush off the idea that Riku or Sora at any point actually liked Kairi, which is where the bi and pan interpretations tend to come from. Their being bi or pan doesn't disprove SoRiku, it just acknowledges the possibility that at some point, they may have liked the same girl. However, I've seen many SoRikus react negatively to the idea of Sora or Riku being multi-sexual or anything that isn't just gay. I do recognize that part of that is because many people, including SoRiKai shippers, try to shut you down with the "I personally see him as bi." line.
There are reasons to believe that though, I'll give you some short ones. Throughout KH2, Sora is fantasizing about seeing Kairi again, most memorably in the scene where Jack and Sally are dancing together. One could say that Sora was romanticizing a fake, past version of Kairi and lost interest. That being said, the fact that he fantasized about her at all could lend itself to the idea that Sora liked Kairi and is therefore bisexual. With Riku, him stopping Ansem from taking Kairi in KH1 could be seen as the final straw for him, while Ansem using his body to fight Sora, wasn't. You could say that it was because Kairi is his friend and he just lost Sora, but there is a possible romantic connotation to be had if you remember that he was playing keep-away with Kairi's body and that his final line is "Take care of her." That leads me to my next point that you won't like.
A lot of this is down to interpretation. You could see Sora's stiffness in kh3's paopu fruit scene as him being shy and taken aback by Kairi's boldness, but you could also see it as him being taken aback because their relationship has changed so much from what it was in 1, that being because he no longer is under the assumption that he is in love with her. Both interpretations are compelling and both are valid. My problem with this thread as a whole is that in spite of ranting about how SoRiku isn't taken seriously and is brushed off by people dumbing it down to a ship war, you end up backhandedly saying things that would imply that you do want to disprove Sokai within the text by brushing or Sora's past feelings as merely comphet and that you make assumptions about the nature of the people who just want to stop hearing "discussions" about whether SoKai or SoRiku is endgame.
SoRiku would be a huge deal if it happened. It'd be a big leap in LGBTQ representation as it'd be one of the only if not, the only gay relationship in gaming that would have spanned 20+ years and was shown to a wide audience. A part of me roots for it because there are legitimate reasons to think that the writers are not only intentional but sincere in what they're writing and how they're writing it. The KH2 reunion scene is talked about to the point of being stereotypical, but it does demonstrate clear as day the potential queerness of these characters. How Sora sees Kairi and is like "Even though you've changed, we'll always be friends." then he sees Riku come in, having changed to look like one of his worse enemies, not caring, and dropping to his knees crying tears of bittersweet joy.
I'm not sure if you're going to believe me, but I'll end with this:
I genuinely think that SoRiku is a stronger ship than Sokai, though I don't think either ship is canon. Personally, I'd prefer it that way, but I get why people feel otherwise. There are times when I can't even stand the sight of Sokai because its fans have far too much influence over the KH community and rarely face consequences for the homophobic shit they say online. The reason I rant about SoRikus so much is that I'm on the queer side of the fandom more often so I'm going to see a queer poster shit themselves before I see a straight one. I don't think you're a "delusional yaoi fangirl." I'm a fangirl, I like yaoi. that'd be hypocritical of me. I see why you're upset but I and many others are sick of being called or implied to be homophobic just because they don't like SoRiku theories or the actions of the shippers. We're sick of assumptions being made about us and the simultaneous smugness and insecurity from SoRiku shippers.
And as far as calling you a dumbass goes, I stand by that. Especially since you bothered responding to a post that censored your account name and proclaimed "That's me!"
Oh Lord, I'm Going Off Again
I used to agree with SoRiku shippers when they said that SoRiKais need to stop coming onto their posts and saying that SoRiKais is the answer to the ship wars. At this point though, I've seen them complain about it so much all in a way that tries to inflate the importance of a ship war, that I'm just on the side of SRKs at this point. Say what you want to about the way that they're acting, but most of them are far more emotionally put together than *some* of these SoRikus are. Like, I usually try to put it more nicely because I genuinely love SoRiku and its moments both in text and within fanworks, but goddamn, SoRikus are some of the most bitch-made people in fandom.
like, THIS:
Is one of the most cope posts I've ever read. It starts off overly defensive and assumes things about people who don't want to deal with ship war bullshit anymore. I know the shippers of this caliber are incapable of believing this as they cannot fathom this thought process (deadass, I was in a SoRiku server and someone defended information told with a bias), but a lot of people, regardless of whatever ship they think is canon, believe the problem to be a result of both sides. Which is true by the way. Doesn't take too much scrolling to see a comment section for a soriku or sokai post devolve into a debate over which ship is canon, the importance of queer representation, and the likes with many arguments taking homophobic or misogynistic overtones. "Why do you guys always have to make everything about you, What's wrong with being normal?", "Kairi contributes nothing, Sora and Riku are better off without her", and "Why do you keep making this kid's game about gay sex?"
"Which ship will be endgame" is an argument by its very nature. You can't discuss that without debating, you absolute dumbass. You're presenting a theory? Well, girlie, hate to tell you, but this is the internet. Anything you say is open to criticism, including your theory. If people find things they feel like are holes, they will point them out, and it's not always malicious. There are times when people just assume that they're getting attacked when in all reality, people were just disagreeing with them.
That ending though. It's like, the inability some SoRikus have to perceive a bi, pan, or ace Sora and Riku is insane to me. Like, some of them, such as Steam, to her credit, has her reasons as to how she arrived at that conclusion. A lot of the time, though, the reasoning is just "Sora and Riku like each other so they must be gay."
This made me appreciate the TenelleFlowers video even more. SoRikus needed SOMEONE to get all their good talking points in one place. Because the Twitter alternatives are crazy.
This also made me appreciate Baloney's first SoRiku video as he straight up says that he hates SoKai and Kairi because she represents every person some queer teen's crush left them for (Not saying this is the case for the person in the tweets. I just like the fact that he came clean about hating SoKai and Kairi.)

In my own defense (on thinking that s2 of tua is better), it's mostly that the siblings seem to actually like each other and roughly most of them manage to find something to live for/be happy about in s2 (rip Luther, but Diego with Lila, Allison with Ray, Klaus with Dave/his cult, Five just shows up, Ben gets a crush, Viktor with Sissy and Harlan). It's mostly just that s1 and s3 end up landing into Darkness Induced Audience Apathy with how dysfunctional they all are and it's kinda hard to find yourself rooting for any of them because of it. (Not to be obnoxious, I'm just legitimately curious about your reaction to s2 if that's alright? No problem if you don't want to share though, that's totally your right.)
i didn't expect to get a response to that post but i don't mind at all! thanks for asking, this gives me an excuse to actually sort all my thoughts out
i definitely agree that season 2 has a lot of softer moments in it of them acting like a real family, like when everyone showed up for five with the light supper and for viktor with the car scene at the end. they're definitely nicer to each other since they all thought everyone else was dead so it's a bit of a honeymoon phase where they're all more appreciative of each other (except five, but we'll get to him). i don't personally think they act like they dislike each other the rest of the time (except for how viktor was treated in the first season, but that was kind of the point of the first season), they just act like siblings. estranged, dysfunctional siblings who don't know how to speak each other's language, but siblings nonetheless. close proximity like that reverts you back to the maturity of a five year old no matter how old you are
the highlight of the season is allison for me. her civil rights group was ballsy because a lot of shows think that tackling homophobia is safer than tackling racism, but they didn't sugarcoat what her experience would've been like as a mute black woman who dropped out of the sky into the 1960s US american south. it lends itself really naturally to her duo with klaus too because they were there the longest and klaus is very visibly queer so they've got that level of understanding on top of the cute sibling moments (viktor and diego weren't having a great time either but they were only there for a month and they just inflicted physical violence about it, so it doesn't really match up with the way allison and klaus dealt with it on a longer timeframe)
the romances on this show get points for not being the same cishet white people in love story we've seen a million times, but at the end of the day i just don't care about romance. that said, ray is an amazing husband and the only love interest on this show i respect (for clarification i dont hate the others, i'm just not invested. i actually like ray, probably thanks to seeing the actor in other things and being able to appreciate what he's doing and his gift for making characters that could easily be annoying very lovable)
on a more widespread scale my issue is the tone. it's like they saw that everyone latched onto the funny bits of the first season and ramped that up, and when you come to this show for the balance of how dark their family drama is and how insane their family drama is it's a bit jarring. season one was about stopping the apocalypse but beneath that it was about unresolved childhood trauma and ineffective family communication that keeps building until it burns you up from the inside out and you have enough fury to destroy the world. going from that to fart jokes felt kinda juvenile, but a lot of the humour in season 2 isn't really my speed so it's probably a matter of taste
the writing felt weaker to me, and my issues with it are petty and/or justified depending on the day. the first one that comes to mind is them having five go from "the one most likely to commit patricide if their father had the misfortune of still being alive" to going "oh, dad knows everything, and also I'm going to apologise to him, the abusive father who pushed me until i ended up in a lifetime of isolation and violence." i suppose you could read it as him playing reggie for the info he needed but it didn't come across like that at all in the acting, and we all know five isn't that good of a liar to pull that off anyway. attitudes towards abusive parents are complicated and easy to fool yourself into thinking they're getting better, but five's old and he knew all the shit reggie was doing was bullshit from the start, so it doesnt even feel like a commentary on manipulative parental figures, it just feels like character inconsistency
the commission also got kind of dumbed down, which makes five constantly pulling one over on them less impressive because you don't know if it's because he's really smart or they're just really, really stupid. and the commission had antisemitic undertones from the beginning so it's not like it was a perfectly crafted antagonistic force in the first place. i'm talking about five a lot but the commission is really tied to his character and all the underlings unionising with this "see? they're not all bad!" approach to it felt insulting. these are the people who watched him struggle to survive for over 40 years from the age of 13 and did nothing to help until he was desperate enough that he'd kill for them and now i'm supposed to root for them, because they weren't in charge so their lack of action isn't their responsibility? yeah, no thanks. he deserved to burn that place to the ground.
the way the siblings (bar allison and klaus, ironically) treated five was really irritating too but i got mad at the characters about that instead of the writers, so this one doesn't really count as a complaint
now onto the pettiness. i'm biased as hell but my main problem with it is just... klaus. everything about klaus. it's an ensemble so they pushed him into the background a bit to make room for other characters like allison who didn't get as much of a limelight the first time, but a good klaus arc has the power to make me ignore all other flaws about a season and this one just didn't hold up in that regard. klaus is the brightest character on the show but also the darkest (because of his personality vs his power), and the powers that he doesn't have (yet) because they had to nerf him so there could be more than one season are on a whole 'nother level of powerful (as proved by season 3, where the stakes are finally high enough that he and allison were allowed to directly impact the plot, and we all saw how that turned out). season 2 was teasing us with them and if i think too hard about it steam starts coming out of my ears. they gave him fake levitation and telekinesis through (invisible) ben, then gave real levitation and resurrection abilities to viktor, who already had a million and one nonsensical powers compared to the others cause he's a total powerhouse
circling back to that tone thing, because they were going for haha funny, klaus could only really be the comic relief, which is a shame because he really shines when he gets more serious stuff to do. when he Does Things it automatically makes things so much darker because his power is death, so for the happy funny season he gets a cult and he gets possessed and that's about it. he did technically save the world this time around (without him ben wouldn't have been able to reach viktor), but he's klaus so he doesn't get any recognition for that either. he was on his own for three years and the only power progression he got was possession and getting a handle on the evocation, but there were so many missed opportunities solely because of how useful his power could be, especially in the final episode. lila's mad at five for killing her parents and it's established that commission agents' victims haunt them (or that people haunt their loved ones, if they're like ben, either one works here), so theoretically they should be right there, and klaus, who we know has got the evocation shit down by now, just... doesn't do anything with that. he just stands there quietly so that the season 3 setup can go on uninterrupted. and how about the army of assassins that were trying to kill them half an hour ago, and who should have their victims following them around because that's how the show told us it works, but again, nothing's done with that. no ghost army moment for him, despite the fact that we saw him doing exactly that in the season opening, and the canon timeline only diverged from the dallas apocalypse timeline a few days before so we know he can figure out how to do that in a very slim timeframe
oh, and they dropped the ball on klaus and five's dynamic too, which is a biased and petty complaint to make, but i am biased and petty and i love complaining

Conversation
I was laying in bed thinking of something and this made me laugh for like a split second, then I got mad and then I started crying a little because, I imagined that I was a lecturer and I had to teach a group of Baby Swen about why their new fandom home was the way it was.
Me: Hello Babies, Mommy's back!
Student in the back: Sweet! Evil Queen references.. Umm, professor, I have a question.
Me: Yes?
Student: Why are our fandom grandmothers, mothers and aunts against Eddie and Adam writing Swan Queen?
Me, sighing gently: Darling, we're not against them writing it, but we have our reservations on the way they ARE writing it and most likely would attempt to write it.
Student in the back seems confused. Pauses slightly before nodding. I write down a topic that blankets the class discussion. "Swan Queen". BABY SWENS WHISPER AND SNICKER WITH EXCITEMENT, but I sigh once again. Someone notices
Student: Professor?
Me: Yes?
Student: What's the matter?
Me, slightly conflicted to do said discussion, but I feel it is needed.
Me: The issue the fandom is facing my dear younglings has to do with an ever running war on Tropes, Tokenism, Sexism and just all around 'fandom fuckery' as we've coined it. Some of you- rather, most of you may be familiar with how savagely Swen are dogged for wanting something that represents this current day and age. Be it a fairy tale that's never been told, or simple recognition in a way that does not make us feel as though we've been given a half-assed story that's tossed after it's done what writers and show runners believe it's supposed to...no-no, Your home- THIS home is a home that has to fight for the equality so that the younger generation may reap the benefits of the fight. Now, this may sound tragic- or seem catty, but I assure you, Swen are not known to be such. We like to leave that to...what was that other group's name, again?
Student with all the smart ass comments whom I adore: Crap tainted Swan!
Me: Yes, them.
I begin to write down a few categories and immediately hands go up.
Student: Professor, what exactly do you mean when you say- they will fuck it up?
Me: Precisely what I wrote. The Swan Queen fandom is not fond of being lied to, deceived or played for fools my young one. We know as well as anyone that 'pushing' is a thing for two overly hetero-normative men who run to Captain Swan with open arms and away from Swan Queen with eyes shut and ears deafened, will somehow manage to mess up a perfectly good story to tell.
Student somewhere in the corner: And when you say they'll make it more difficult- what does that mean?
Me: It means that Our ladies are difficult apart- NOT together and yet the writers seem to bring that as some valid way to deter the pairing. They believe by forcing these characters to appear as though they'd be difficult together would make it hard for them to have a lasting relationship. Trying to deter someone by creating this aura that they simply can't be around one another long enough before they become snarky and catty for all the wrong reasons is absolute bull. If anything- we have proof of countless times they have preferred to be with one another simply because it was obvious of the safety they felt. The care and concern they felt.
Student: Oh, so you mean like- Regina's stubborn and sassy and sarcastic when she and Emma are apart and when they work together, she's still sassy and sarcastic it's just in reference to everyone else and not Emma... it's like they're trying to make you think that Regina can't stand being around Emma when the only time we see the real Regina is when she's with Emma-or Henry-
Me, highly impressed: -exactly!
Another student in the front raises their hand: So, that ties into your next point of it being predictable doesn't it?
Me: It does. Have you all seen the consistent template that's written for a queer character?
They all nod and someone with a good bit of brains stands up to go on a miniature rant.
Student: Yeah, I have and it sucks. There's always the one gay character- (he manages to say with an eye roll.) But then there's all these other 'templates' that are stereotypical. Like if they do marry Emma off to Hook and she magically realizes she doesn't love him or that she's gay, they use Regina and it becomes that thing where the lesbian or in Regina's case- the bisexual, quote on quote 'turns' the straight housewife and she realizes she never needed a man; just some good love.. Or one of them dies- or in their case, both of them apparently.. isn't that what was happening in season six?
Someone whispers, Lexa deserved better and puts up a fist. Other students nod at the other baby Swen and agree.
Student who laughs sarcastically all the time: Or how about this one, She realizes she's not gay either after a bunch of passionate nights with Regina and then she goes back to.. the one handed wonder.. God, don't let her get pregnant-
Other Student yells in pain: -DEAR GOD, PLEASE DON'T GIVE ME IMAGES OF ANOTHER WHINY VERSION OF HOOK! But let's not forget the ones who argue all the time and can't keep a stable relationship and are secretive and all that other junk the L Word made beyond obvious. And if that's not bad enough, they both get beards and are tortured for seasons with men they have no chemistry with and these are women who have chemistry with brick walls and can't even make that shit work-
Me: -Alright.. alright, focus. Yes, these are the templates I'm referring to. But let us not forget the ones that gay male characters also go through.
Someone snorts because they only have one template for gay males.
Student: You mean they're difficult and mysterious and cute little twinks who get thrown with other cute twinks or big buff guys with daddy issues and bam- magical ending?
Me: Correct..moving on.. The third points says-
I'm interrupted as they all say it together
Students: Tokenism!
Me: This is just the TV way of saying affirmative action.. Fanciful in meaning isn't it?
Student: It's trash!
Me: Yes, I do suppose it is... however, would someone like to express why the word tokenism still would apply to Swan Queen?
Hands immediately go up.
Student: Well, if we're being honest here, We already got it once before and we don't even know what the deal is with that story anymore...Swen fears that tokenism can still be a thing for Swan Queen because Eddie and Adam only attempt Swan Mills episodes when their ratings drop and as that becomes a case, so does the question of will they just do Swan Queen to stay on the air and never explore it the way they should... We've been hearing of season seven being the final season and our worry is no longer that they will fuck it up. Quite frankly we don't even want them to write it anymore, we'll take it off their hands and make our own show out of it. The problem arises when they create the asinine plan to use it as a last minute crutch to 'go out with a bang' or something. Like, What if this season completely tanks it and season seven is in fact the last season, right? They get the plan, Hmm maybe we should do Swan Queen in the last episode and that'll justify all of the crap we've put these people through, just to say they did something some grande and amazing thing for us, when in reality, they were trying to save their shitty revenue.
Student directly adjacent: Can I add on to that?
Other student nods.
Student: It really is sad though when we were willing to settle for anything- any sort of thing, just to know we were being heard no matter how much we fought- no matter how much our fandom grandmothers have fought. I think deep down, a lot of us know they just won't do it, like they really won't and even if they do, the luxury of it has just faded. The luxury of it would have faded and they'll try to force it to be overly gooey and 'loving' or cutesy when that's not what we asked for. We asked for a story that was true to life and very much so a proper representation for us all. We asked for a story that proved that strong women can work together and fall in love with one another. That they go through ups and downs and doubts and sticking things out and believing in one another and all of the other good things we've seen.... If we get it, if we are blessed enough to have Swan Queen- We'll be happy, but we'll be tired. We'll be exhausted and still disappointed that it had to come to this for us to be heard... I don't think we'll ever be as happy as we were the first day in season one when they met, if only because of the pain and heartbreak and the amount of horrible things that have been said to us just seems to, hit too many nails in our coffins. The fight will never be over, and we have accepted that, but I think everyone's getting tired of having to fight for something that shouldn't even be in question... and it's not to say we've lost our drive or we're losing hope. We're just done with trying to tell men who clearly don't understand that this is a revolution that needs to happen. This is a change that needs to be seen.. we're done trying to prove something we have too much evidence for to still be called delusional and reaching and all those other things. Everyone's tired of watching some forced 'chemistry' dictate how women should be treated and seen in this world. We're tired of seeing people be criminalized and denied a second chance at a love that won't leave or die on them i.e Regina.. We're done and we are tired of feeling like what we watch is what it will always be- nothing but a dream, an illusion... A fucking fairytale.
Silence encompasses the room and everyone thinks on it. (I legit cried when I thought about this part, so I'm sorry)
Me: We are tired, young ones.. we are, but we fight for us and we fight for you until it's over. We march for us and we march for you until we die and you are right, we have not lost hope.. we've just lost that many damns to give on speaking to a group of people who choose not to understand.... And maybe it is true, maybe we truly won't be fulfilled even if they do give us what we asked for.. what we've pleaded for.. and maybe it will make it all seem like it was in vain and maybe we will feel like we've accomplished nothing because we had to force hand for them to cave or pressure them... your grandmothers, mothers and aunts for this fandom realized many things.. we will not force anyone to give us anything. We will peacefully protest the injustice, but if we are not given what we rightly deserve.... we move on from trying with them and you know what we do? We make a world of our own. Eddie and Adam didn't give Swan Queen life... we did, and you did. They didn't see what we saw. They didn't understand it and they clearly didn't want any part of it, but the dream lives on. The reality lives on- the world keep spinning and life goes on and guess what, so will the memory of Swan Queen....Now I need you all to say this last point with me..together we will do this..
Even if nothing happens. Even if your words fall on deaf ears to some, remember the many that you have made hear you. Remember the many who sat with you and held your hands and kept you together...when things fall away and the glamour goes goodbye, remember your reality, your worth and yourself in all of this- Remember YOUR fight.. Through all things, every hard moment and every distressing situation.. for every negative message- comes ten thousand positive soldiers. Fight on and keep hope..
When you open your mouth and words come out and you say "May I have your attention please?" Remember that those who listen are those who wish to hear.... Remember that your fight is a plea to be heard and someone will listen.. remember that actions and words are one and you fuel them. Remember that when the world around you dies- you are to flourish and bring light back to it... remember that you fight for you just as you fight for me and I do the same... remember from now until the end of time that you've done your part in this world and if it never happens... still, keep hope, because maybe, just maybe...one day it will
With Love, Megan
