A New Year’s Kiss

Summary: Daveed plans to propose to Reader on her favorite holiday as he prepares the night before the proposal he thinks back through memories of their three-year relationship.

It was a cold night in New York City, you sat in the living room of your new three-bedroom apartment sipping on a cup of hot ginger tea. Daniel crawled all over the place, loving the ample amount of space he had to chase the new family dog, Rocky, a Beagle puppy. Daniel’s laughter made you smile widely; you loved the life you and Daveed built for yourselves. The new apartment was coming along nicely, you finally unpacked the last of the boxes, thus ending the living out of a box phase. You decorated the walls with pictures of family and friends, there’s even a wall dedicated to the tv shows, movies, plays, and musicals the two of you have been in. Even though you truly think that it was Daveed’s way to brag about your accomplishments every time someone came over to visit, despite the many times he denied it. The sound of the front door opening alerted Daniel that Daveed was home, he crawled to the front of the apartment, screaming at the top of his lungs. Daveed scooped Daniel and kissed the top of his head where his curly dark brown hair was starting to grow.

“Hey, little man! Where’s Mommy?” Daniel pointed toward the living room. Daveed walked over and plopped down next to you. You shared a quick kiss before Daniel slid himself out of Daveed’s lap to keep playing with Rocky.

“How was your day?” Daveed asked he wrapped an arm around you to pull you close to him.

“It was fine, just like the first day of rehearsals.” After being in The Lion King for about three months, you landed the lead role in a new musical called WET PAINT. “We start previews at the end of February. How was it with Anthony?”

“It was great, babe. We got the song done Rafa’s gonna send in his verse tomorrow.”

“That—” Then there were several loud knocks at the door

“You expecting company?”

“Remember my mom and sisters are coming up for New Years,” You hopped off the couch and greeted your family at the door, they were staying at a hotel not far from your apartment and you planned for them to come over and visit since your sisters haven’t seen Daniel since he was born.

“Hey Mom,” You pulled your mom in for a hug

“Hey, Y/N!”

“Come in guys,” Your mom and three sisters walked into your apartment,

“Where’s my grandson?” Your mom wondered loudly

“Nana!” Just like that Daniel made his way over to your mom who swooped down to pick him up.

“Hi, Nana’s baby, Y/N, I love the new place.” Your mom said as everyone followed you into the kitchen.

“Thanks, we needed more space, with Daniel getting bigger and having a dog.”

“Is there any other reason why you and Daveed needed more space?” Your oldest sister, Fatima, playfully suggested

“Um, girl no, Daniel isn’t even one yet. I’m just getting back to my pre-baby body. Oh, by the way, can you re-dip my braids tonight?”

“I was gonna offer but I didn’t want to be rude,” Fatima teased

“Shut up, rude ass.”

“So,” your older sister, Mara started “have you thought about having another baby?”

“I mean, yeah but not anytime soon.”

“What about marriage?” Your other sister, Kalani, added

“It’s been discussed, we both know we’re in this for the long haul.”

“Wedding bells may be in your near future,” Mara teased

“Can we wait a minute, we just moved, Daniel’s about to turn one, I just went back to work, I need some more time.”

“Girl, you waited three years, how much longer?” Fatima reasoned

“Why are you guys interrogating me?” You asked overwhelmed knowing that Daveed was well within earshot.

“Alright, alright, we’ll leave you alone, come on and let me fix your hair.”

Your sisters and mom ended up staying well past dinner and you didn’t mind it one minute. After graduating from Howard University, you moved to New York and didn’t look back. The last time you saw your sisters, in person, was at your baby shower and that was a year ago. After eating the crab cakes your Mom made and about three glasses of Merlot, you currently playing Black Card Revoked with your sisters, one of your favorite games, India Aire playing in the background.

“Okay, so this is majority rules, ‘You know it’s about to be a fight when you hear someone say? A. We need to talk… B. I just find it funny how… C. So what you not gonna do… or D. Didn’t I tell you…’” Fatima read

“C!” You said confidently, “That’s how all my fights started in high school.

“Naw I gotta go with D,” Mara shouted “D is one of them sneak attacks from behind.”

“Like that time, you grabbed that girl’s hair,” Kalani reminisced

“Yeah, she was bothering Y/N, and I was the only one in high school with her and I was not gonna let some bitch mess with my sister.”

“And that’s on period,” Fatima said

“Pooh!” Kalani added, making the sisters laugh

Daveed noticed your mom in the kitchen washing the dishes and saw it as the perfect opportunity.

“Hey, Daveed, sorry about the wedding talk with my daughters. I promise I didn’t say anything to them.” Your mom said in hushed tones

“It’s okay, I just wanted to show you a picture of the ring,” Daveed pulled out his phone and showed your mother the engagement ring. Shortly after you had Daniel, Daveed came to your mother and asked for her blessing, of course, she agreed and helped him find the perfect ring and the way he should propose. Knowing you were a private person he was going to give you a gift after midnight when everyone left your place, a photo album and on the last page, he was going to pop the question.

“It’s beautiful Daveed, where is it?”

“I keep it on me at all times,” Daveed pulled the engagement box out of his pocket.

“Is that what I think it is?” Fatima gushed

“Shush, get over here girl.” Your mother urged “Where’s Y/N?”

“She’s in the living room, so you’re gonna propose?”

“Yeah,” Daveed said quietly “tomorrow.”

“Aw, I’m so happy for you two, how are you gonna propose?”

“With a photo album,” Daveed replied a small smile on his face

“Oooohhhh, I can’t wait,” Fatima said clapping her hands together

“Fatima it’s your turn and you about to get skipped!” You shouted from the living room

“Girl, skip me I’m winning anyway,” Fatima said walking back over

Daveed sat in the living room long after you had fallen asleep and your mom and sisters went back to their hotel. He was going over the photo album to make sure that everything was perfect for tomorrow. The first picture he came across was from the opening night party of the First National Tour of Hamilton, which is where the two of you met. After consuming many drinks from the open bar the two of you snapped a very drunk selfie. Daveed had kissed your cheek and you were laughing.

March 2017

After you spilled your wine on Daveed, it seemed the two of you were attached at the hip. Between the bar and the dance floor, Daveed was not far from you and you didn’t mind at all. There was a lavish balcony looking over San Francisco, you and Daveed were laughing at a high school story you were telling him.

“So, the girlfriend started hitting the boyfriend mind you, we’re all in line for the Haunted Mansion ride and it got so bad that we were told to get out of line, so I never got to ride the Haunted Mansion. Long story short, my first and only trip to Disneyland before all of this was pretty bad.”

“Well, that just means we have to go back.”

“When?”

“Whenever,”

“Daveed, we can’t just drive to Disneyland and I don’t know you like that.”

“We can fly, that’s not a problem.”

“Did you forget that I’m on a tour right now?”

“Ain’t y’all here until August.”

“Well, I still don’t know you.”

“You can get to know me.”

“What if I don’t want to?” You challenged

“I can get us Fast Passes.”

“Oh, so you got it like that?” You teased flirtatiously

“Yeah, uh, I got some connections,” Daveed smirked

“Alright, let’s go.”

“It’s a date,” Daveed smiled

“It’s a date.”

The next picture was a picture Jasmine took of them at an award show, that night you said I love you to each other for the first time.

June 2018

You and Daveed had attended your first red carpet event of the award season that evening. It was also the first time you were at an exclusive event as a couple. The paparazzi went crazy all of them wanting to snap pictures of Daveed and his new girlfriend. It was all overwhelming to you. Of course, you have been on a red carpet before but not for an award show. While it was exciting it was also draining. Unfortunately, you had to leave that night to go back to New York you had a show the next day, what made it worse, was that Daveed had to stay in LA for an interview about Blindspotting. Now at the airport, you hugged your boyfriend tightly not wanting to let go.

“You gonna miss your flight,” He mumbled into the crook of your neck.

“I don’t care,” You said, tiredness evident in your voice.

“It’s only two days, go make that money,” Daveed said trying to lift your spirits. Daveed cupped your face and kissed you on the lips.

“I love you,” He said tenderly, you looked at him wide-eyed. He mentally slapped himself for saying that out loud. He scanned your face for any sign that you would say it back. When he didn’t he pulled away from you, suddenly.

“Sorry, for saying that, uh—-”

“Daveed—-”

“I um, I hope you have a safe flight. Call me when you land.” Daveed said quickly, wanting to end the already awkward moment. He turned to walk away but you grabbed his arm and pulled him in for another kiss.

“You didn’t let me say it back, dork.” You gave him a quick peck on the lips “I love you too,” Daveed smiled widely and kissed you once more.

“Can you say it again?” You playfully rolled your eyes

“I love you too.” Daveed leaned in to kiss you but you put up your hand to stop him

“I’m gonna miss my flight, messing with you. I love you.”

“Love you too.”

January 2019

“Happy New Year!!” You smiled while you kissed Daveed. The two of you were hosting a New Year’s Eve party for your friends at Daveed’s New York apartment. This was the first big event the two of you hosted. Well, it was mainly you, Daveed just let you do your thing. You pulled away from the kiss and raised an eyebrow, you know that there was something was on his mind.

“What are you thinking about?”

“You should move in with me.”

“Huh? How much have you had to drink?” You asked but you were just as tipsy after taking quite a few shots out the Grammy.

“Not as much as you.” You lightly slapped his chest you examined his face to make sure he wasn’t playing a joke

“You serious?”

“Hella,”

“Aw, so I’m gonna have more than a drawer.” Daveed playfully rolled his eyes

“You can have a whole dresser,” You gave a peck on the cheek, smiling widely.

“I love you,”

“Love you too.”

The next day, Daveed did his best to keep his cool which was easy because your sisters, Mom, Jasmine, Kim, Rafael, Barbara, and Dountes were all at your place for New Year's Eve and served as the perfect distraction. Anthony was in Times Square performing on the Main Stage and would be the last act before the ball dropped so you decided to host a party.

You caught Daveed staring, smirking you walked over to him. You were wearing a brown bodycon dress and matching heels. Feeling the effects of the alcohol had you feeling more confident. You sensually wrapped your arms around Daveed making sure to caress his muscles.

“We have some time before midnight,” you suggested Daveed smirked and kissed your forehead.

“With your Mom here?” Daveed asked with raised eyebrows.

“I can be quiet,”

“After everyone’s gone. So we don’t have to worry about being quiet.” You pouted which made Daveed snicker.

“It’s shot o’clock!” Your sister Mara called from the kitchen

“Oh, so we doing body shots?” Rafael suggested eying your sister.

“Body shots?” Fatima questioned

“I’m down,” Mara responded giving Rafael the same look.

“No one is down for anything, this is not some frat party.”

“How much you wanna bet, Rafa’s gonna—”

“Don’t even finish that sentence, I don’t need the visual.”

Midnight came and went and Daveed’s nervousness was at an all-time high. He watched as your guests left one by one. Neither of you were surprised when Mara and Rafa slipped away shortly after the ball dropped. Surprisingly, Daniel stayed up until the ball dropped, but went to sleep shortly after.

“I’m about to go change so we can start cleaning up.”

“Hold on, I wanna give you something first,” Daveed said you sighed heavily.

“Babe, can you give it to me after I change? I wanna get out my shoes.”

“It’s not gonna take long. I promise, go in the living room.”

You sleepily walked back to the living room and plopped down on the sofa, whatever Daveed had up his sleeve better be worth it. Daveed returned with a purple photo album in hand and handed it to you.

“What’s this?”

“Just some pictures, something I put together.” You smiled, tears threatening to fall.

“Aw, you’re so sweet, thank you so much, baby.”You kissed his cheek before looking through the album and reacting to the pictures. It was so crazy to see the timeline of your relationship, who would’ve thought that back in 2017 you would be where the two of you are now.

You flipped through the album until you got to the last page. It was an empty page and dated for today. Confused you turned to look at Daveed only to find him already on bended knee with a ring box in hand. You covered your face as the tears started falling. Daveed gently removed your hands from your face. You saw that he was holding back tears as well.

“When you purposely split your wine on me—”

“Oh my gosh, Daveed!”

“I knew you were something special the first time I laid my eyes on you. Baby, you are the love of my life. I want to spend the rest of it with you. I kept going over what I was gonna say or how I wanted to do this. I wanted it to be perfect because you deserve nothing but perfection. I love you so much. Will you marry me?” You were full-on crying at this point. The album already made you emotional but, the both of you had discussed marriage but still, this proposal is everything you’ve could‘ve dreamed of.

“Yes, yes of course.” Daveed slid the ring onto your ring finger and you pulled him in for a kiss. This is always how you imagine your engagement would be, just you and your fiancé.

we’re the fortunate ones

season five: enough of this terror, we deserve to know light. ♥️

Jake’s hand trails slowly up and down Amy’s back as they stand and talk to Terry, his movements ranging from palm-sized sweeps to finger tipped circles as the conversation wears on.  One of his most favourite things in life is to listen to Amy flip into Nerd Mode, and right now her voice is bright and full of passion as she explains the origin of Auld Lang Syne to her audience. 

“So really, it’s about acknowledging days gone by and raising a glass to all the moments - good and bad - that have passed,”  she concludes, glancing at Jake out of the corner of her eye as she raises her own glass in example.  Moving his free hand back up towards the base of her neck Jake takes the cue, finishing his own drink and resisting the urge to curl a strand of Amy’s hair around his fingers as Terry bids farewell a moment later, leading Sharon over to the bar for refills.

Once they are alone Amy shifts her weight to her right, leaning into Jake’s touch as his hand moves to her shoulder, and he presses a soft kiss to her temple.  Emptying her glass and abandoning it on the table next to Jake’s, Amy glances around quickly before looking up at him with those gorgeous brown eyes that never fail to pull him in deep.  “If you keep touching my back like that, Peralta, there is no way we’re making it to midnight.”

Jake laughs, dropping his hand to just the right spot on Amy’s lower back and pulling her closer.  “We didn’t make it to midnight, Ames.  If I’m remembering correctly, we didn’t even make it to eight.”  Her responding blush makes him grin, and he throws her a wink knowing full well that Amy’s reliving the same memory.

They’d both arrived home from work late (it’s almost as though the criminals of New York have no respect for their plans), and in an attempt to save time Amy had squeezed herself in on Jake’s shower.  And perhaps they’ve both been a little loved up lately - and maybe Amy just looked a little too sexy all soaped up like that - because showering quickly turned into other stuff and it hadn’t been long before Jake was being dragged out of the bathroom and into their bedroom (the rule was no sex in the shower after The Incident last June: fair, when he remembered the bruises they’d had in .. places).  What happened next had been as awesome as ever, and if there hadn’t been a party they’d already said yes to, Jake would have found it far easier to convince Amy to stay right there in their bedroom for the rest of the evening.  

“You’re still not off the hook for that one, babe.”  Amy mumbles, reaching up to fiddle with the collar of his shirt and bringing his attention back to the present.  “We were so late to the party, and I’m totally blaming that on you.”

“It’s New Year’s Eve, Ames.  As long as we’re here before midnight, it’s totally fine.”  He smiles at her, dropping his hand an inch lower as he rests his forehead briefly against hers.  “And I think you’re forgetting who initiated what before, thank you very much.”

“Can a girl help it if her fiancée was particularly sweet at work today and she wanted to show her appreciation?”  Tipping her head upwards, she bridges the gap between them with a kiss.  “And besides, it was round two that made us late, and that one’s definitely on you.”

Jake’s heart skips a beat at the sound of fiancée, part of his mind still in disbelief that such a title could belong to him - even if he was the one on bended knee in the first place.  Grinning, he shrugs in surrender, gliding his palm over her lower back again.  “Right right, fair call ... I guess the sight of my fiancée in that setup you’ve got going on under there was just too much for me.”  Amy laughs, her cheeks turning that soft pink that he loves to see, and he leans back in for another chaste kiss. 

“Oh god, we’re totally that couple at the party that are all over each other, aren’t we?” she mumbles, tucking her head into Jake’s shoulder in faux shame.  His smile is bright in response, sighing happily when Amy’s arms circle around his waist, telling him with her gentle grip that she has no intention of moving anytime soon. 

“We so are babe. But you know what?  I am totally okay with it.”  

As Amy hums her assent, Jake’s eyes flicker around the room, taking in the black and gold decorations that covered a very good portion of the venue Boyle had rented for the night.  He and Genevieve had gone all out this year, and once everyone learned to avoid the truly strange options on the menu, it was turning out to be a genuinely enjoyable evening.  

He finds Rosa in one corner, the grip on her glass of whiskey tight as she stands listening to Gina, who is undoubtedly discussing the other party guests.  Her stance is comfortable, and about as relaxed as Rosa gets,  but still Jake waits until their eyes meet from across the room before he can be sure that she’s okay.  

Their casual nights of drinking in silence had increased since they’d gotten out of prison, only now they weren’t so silent.  Memories of the darker moments behind bars would often stay collectively pooled at the bottom of their glasses, jumbling into a heap along the edge of their table before disappearing with the barman.  As the weeks and months passed by there were little reminders that would strike unexpected, stinging like a starving animal gnawing at unhealed wounds.  Other times they simmered slowly below the surface, waiting for the perfectly inopportune moment to strike.  The scars were fading, but they were there, and her family's reaction to her coming out had not helped things at all.  Surviving this year had brought them closer together, and with everyone around them happily celebrating the year that was, Jake wouldn’t have blamed Rosa for a second if she’d had the sudden urge to be Anywhere But Here.  

Gina turns her head to see where Rosa’s half smile is directed, and she gives Jake her best I got this face when his eyes flicker over to her.  The bright pink 2018 crown that she had worked into her hairstyle was doing it’s very best to attract just enough attention, glitter catching the light as the redhead gives he and Amy a once-over, shaking her head in mock disgust.  He brushes off his oldest friend’s glare, rolling his eyes in a completely mature response before returning his attention to Amy, tightening his grip around her in defiance.  Gina didn’t understand what this evening meant to them, and in all honesty he didn’t need her to.

It had only been a few months ago that Jake had genuinely begun to believe that a life with Amy was only ever going to be a dream.  The thing about prison was that it worked relentlessly at making sure that all inmates were aware that they’d become just another number - that the cement blocks that now made up your world would not acknowledge or mourn your disappearance when or if it occurred.  Unsurprisingly, the nights had turned out to be the hardest, and his overactive mind would spiral around him as his deepest fears began to infiltrate - all with one undeniable theme: you’re never going to make it out of here.

But by the grace of all that is good - and a perhaps not-so-legal acquisition of information - Hawkins’ reign of terror had been brought crashing down, and both Jake and Rosa’s sentences had been overturned.  Now; the air felt fresher, the sun looked brighter, and after a (slightly) hitch-less Halloween Heist, there was a sparkling diamond on Amy’s ring finger.  This was going to be their only New Year’s Eve as an engaged couple, and wild horses couldn’t drag them away from each other tonight.  

Amy’s hands sweep along his waist as though she can sense what he’s thinking about (let’s face it: she probably can), and she raises up slightly, dropping a feather-light kiss to Jake’s neck before whispering “We should probably go and at least pretend to socialise with the other guests, right?”

Shaking his head, Jake uses his free hand to curl the edges of her hair around his finger, the other maintaining it’s steady grip along her back, comfortable in the familiarity of her curves.  She had been so much thinner when he’d gotten back from prison, his arms wrapping around her more than they’d used to.  HIs observation of such on their first night back together had been shrugged off, added with the quiet admittance that their phone calls had fed her more than food, and it had cut him to the quick.  He’d counted far too many hours in scratchy orange jumpsuits, desperate in his need to clear his name from this wrongful persecution, but through it all his fight for a future with Amy had been paramount.  To see the physical proof that all of this had affected her as well somehow hurt greater than anything else he’d had to endure.

From that night on, their healing had been slow - but it was always together.

Mimicking Jake’s shake of his head with her own, Amy rests her chin against his chest, looking up at Jake with such an abundance of love that he truly wonders what good deeds he’s done in his life to be rewarded with her heart.  Amy Santiago was undoubtedly the love of his life - he’d known it long before he’d ever felt confident enough to say it out loud - and next year they were going to be make it official.  

“You know what?”  Jake asked, cocking his head to the side slightly, grinning when Amy raises her eyebrows in a silent question.  “In just 135 days, I’m gonna marry your butt so hard.”

“Oh yeah?”  He nods his head enthusiastically, and Amy’s eyes begin to crinkle as she mirrors his grin.  “That’s good to know, because in 136 days, I’ve got some pretty serious honeymoon sex planned for us. It would have been a shame for that to go to waste.”

“Not gonna lie, that sounds kinda amazing.”

“The binder I’m making is going to blow. your. mind. babe.”

Leaning down to kiss her, Jake whispers, “God I can’t wait to be your husband.” 

It was true.  Their wedding was going to be amazing (he’s been secretly compiling a list of Jock Jams to surprise Amy with, and its only halfway done yet already awesome), but truly Jake was beyond ready to be married.  To wear a band on his finger that told the whole world that he loves one person above all others, and that person was Amy Santiago.  To be able to refer to her as his wife, and to smile proudly when she called him her husband.  They were the tiniest of things, but when it all came together it was a life he couldn’t wait to start.  

Amy smiles up at him, craning up on her toes to steal another kiss and Jake sighs happily against her mouth.  Wiping off a smudge of lipstick from his lips as she pulls away, Amy shakes her head slowly.  “You know, it really is ridiculous how corny we’re being tonight.”

Digging his teeth into his lower lip briefly, Jake glances around the room again before shrugging.  “This is just our engage-moon period,” he states, and when Amy stares blankly he continues.  “I mean … there’s always a honeymoon period after you get married, right?  Then … by that logic there should be an engage-moon period, when you’re freshly engaged and everything just seems freakin’ awesome.”

Amy’s mouth turns down slightly as she studies him, that cute concentration face taking over her features, and if he didn’t love her enough already he might just love her a little bit more as she nods in agreement.  “You know what, you’re absolutely right.”

“And besides,” Jake continues, unable to contain his smile, “this year is going to be amazing.  We’re going to get married, you’re going to become a sergeant -”

“We don’t know that, Jake …”

“You’re going to be a sergeant,” giving her a pointed look he carries on - “the nine-nine will continue to kick crime to the curb and you and I are going to have super-hot married sex in every single room in our apartment.”  

Her laughter is loud, the carefree giggles bouncing onto Jake’s chest as her body shakes, and Jake can’t help but join in.  This is what he wanted - all day, every day, for as long as they both shall live.  

A steady voice breaks through their little bubble, interrupting their laughter with the statement - “If you two are about done with the lovey-dovey stuff, we can start counting down to the new year.”

Pulling away slightly, Amy wraps her right arm around Jake’s waist and clears her throat.  “Oh, hey Gina.”  With a smile, she accepts the glass of champagne that Rosa offers, taking a sip to distract herself from the embarrassment Jake can tell she’s feeling.

Reaching for the glass that Gina is holding out for him, Jake once again ignores her judgemental stare, choosing instead to secure his left arm around Amy’s shoulder in both comfort and solidarity.  Let the world cringe at how ridiculously sappy they were being.  If there was anything that the past year had taught him, it was that time was never guaranteed.  And now that a happy future was finally in their grasp, he wasn’t going to give it up for anything.  

The passing minutes are filled with casual conversation, ranging from stories about Gina’s newborn to the group comparing horror stories over what they’d discovered on the buffet, and as the hosts come over to join them, they begin to countdown to the end of 2017.  

When he looks back on photos from the evening, Jake can tell there was a cacophony of party poppers, blowers and calls of celebration, adding to the showers of confetti surrounding them all as the countdown falls to zero, but in all honesty the only thing that he can remember from that moment is Amy.  Her hand, curled around a glass of champagne and pressed to his chest as he pulls her in for a kiss that he definitely intended to be sweet but suddenly turned into so much more.  The feel of her lips, soft and bewitching as their tongues begin to tangle; her feet pressed in up against his own and her free hand touching his cheek, thumb stroking softly in the way that has always, always made his heart pound like crazy.  

They weren’t often ones for such public displays of affection.  But the past few years had tested them more than either could have expected, and it felt so good to show that FINALLY, love was going to win.

Jake’s smile is wider than he can help by the time they pull away, and when Amy chases his lips for another quick press, he’s only too happy to oblige.  

“Happy New Year, Jake.”  Her voice is soft, and her eyes are so bright and full of elation that Jake can’t help but lean in for another kiss. 

“Happy New Year, Ames.”

Still holding the champagne, Amy wraps her arms carefully around Jake’s neck and grins.  “We’re getting married this year!”

“It’s gonna be the best year ever.”

The roll of Gina’s eyes is almost audible.  “You guys are so gross.  But you also look really happy, so I’m just going to let it slide for tonight.”  With a shake of her head, she tips her glass upside down, shaking the last few drops into her mouth.  “Damn, being a mother really changes a gal.”

Rosa chimes in, her tone as factual as ever as she nods her head in Charles’ direction “Also, you should probably know Boyle just took like twenty photos of the two of you kissing.” 

“They’re for my scrapbook!”

One would be surprised to know the extent Annalise Flores would go to remain anonymous. She had a wig she wore specifically for work, and it wasn’t just to look professional. All of her social media is private, not that she surfs the web for leisure these days. Her own family doesn’t even know what she’s been up to these last few weeks. This is the life Annalise chose. Always reserved, always a mystery. She preferred it this way.

So when she got back together with her ex, it wasn’t exactly devastating to discover that she was not allowed to be seen with him in the public eye. Her ex-turned-current boyfriend is the world famous musician Shawn Mendes. They dated back in college prior to the fame, but that’s a different story. This is now.

Annalise was in between sessions at her Los Angeles counseling office, reviewing notes and waiting for the next client to arrive. It was a normal work day, she was at the halfway point, but not quite. It wasn’t lunchtime yet.

The phone rang, causing her to jump at the sound. She picked up and answered, hearing her assistant/secretary Mateo on the other line.

“Señora, tiene una entrega,” he said in a singsong voice.

“What did we say about señora?” she replied. “I feel old.”

He giggled. “So are you coming, or do I drink this coffee myself?”

Annalise perked up at the sound of coffee. “I’ll be right there.”

It’s not that it was a hot beverage. She never Postmated something she could simply go out and get herself. She smoothed out her black dress and went down the hallway, gazing at the waiting room on the way to the front desk, just in case anyone showed up early. That was a rare occurrence, what with the type of clientele she dealt with.

The delivery was exactly what Mateo had said, a cup of coffee from some obscure shop. The assistant was grinning excitedly, for this wasn’t the first time his employer had gotten a mystery drink with a note attached. Annalise knew he never read the notes she got, otherwise he would have flipped his shit long ago. Mateo wasn’t one to hide things like shock or excitement. He would learn though; He was still an intern.

Annalise took the cup and read the strip on the side of it. Decaf. Hvy cream. Sweetener. Yup, that’s the one. Then she opened the folded note that was tape to the cup.

She hummed and slipped the note into her dress pocket. Looks like she has plans tonight.

“There’s also a man outside who wants to talk to you,” Mateo added. “He’s the one who brought the coffee.”

Annalise figured there would be more than just that silly little note. She went out the door and into the warm spring day, finding a familiar bald man sat on a nearby bench.

“Jake,” she greeted.

The man stood and smiled. “How you doing, Ann?”

“Good. Apparently I’m seeing him tonight? Has he lost his mind or something?”

“He says it’s important.”

“He and I have different definitions of the word important. But yeah, I’ll go. I assume you’ll be taking me again?” There was a bit of reluctance in her tone.

“That’s right. As soon as you’re done here.”

Anytime Annalise wanted to see her boyfriend, she couldn’t simply drive herself to his house whenever she pleased. The last time she saw Shawn was two months ago on Valentine’s Day, a day that he decided was important. Most days, they saw each other through FaceTime, Snapchat, text, even the coffee and notes became a regular form of communication.

It’s not like Annalise frequently keeps up with celebrity gossip, but she knew why it had to be this way, and honestly, she wasn’t mad about it. She had to sneak around with Shawn behind the scenes of his great big love story stunt, despite the fact that he wasn’t doing anything careerwise at the moment. It was more for the other person in this love story stunt than it was for him. Again, Annalise wasn’t mad about it.

Staying away from Shawn in public was fine, and that’s the truth. The world believed Shawn Mendes was dating Camila Cabello for the umpteenth time in his career. Well, some of the world believed that, and some was all that was needed. As long as Annalise didn’t get under that terrifying microscope, she was good.

Shawn was nervous for a multitude of reasons. The doorbell rang, and even though he checked the camera at the front door, he still felt knots in his stomach. He hasn’t seen this girl in a while. He was still surprised that she agreed to come all the way to sunny LA. This wasn’t her level of expertise, but she was experienced in law, so that was better than nothing. On top of that, Shawn didn’t trust anyone that was connected to Andrew, and most lawyers in this town seemed to know him. Shawn couldn’t risk any of this getting back to his team.

He answered the door to a petite woman with a jet black pixie cut. She had on dark sunglasses, and carried an umbrella. Ripped skinny jeans, a band t-shirt, and converse were her go-to. It was like she hadn’t changed clothes since the last time Shawn saw her. Dark as this girl looked, her greeting was like sunshine.

“Helloooo!” She dramatically threw her umbrella aside and opened her arms for a hug.

“Isabella,” Shawn greeted as he accepted her hug, minding the permanent chill of her body. “Thank you so much for coming.”

Oh, that’s okay,” she replied. She stepped inside the house and looked around the spacious area. “Damn, this ain’t no Canada. Also, how convenient that you live here and not your supposed home country.” She poked his chest with a grin.

Shawn chuckled. This girl genuinely did not believe Canada was a real place. “Tell you what, get me out of this contract, and I’ll send you on a vacation to Vancouver.”

Isabella took off her sunglasses, revealing red eyes. However she blinked a few times and they went back to brown.

“Who else is here?” she asked, placing her shoulder bag on the kitchen island. “I’m detecting Chanel Number Whatever.”

“Oh, that’s probably Camila,” Shawn replied, still thrown by how intuitive Isabella was. “She’s in the bathroom. And uh, Ann will be here soon.”

“Okay, so Camila’s the fake girlfriend, right?”

“Worse. They want us engaged.”

Isabella’s eyes widened. “We have a lot of work to do.”

Then, another voice sounded from the stairs. “Who’s here? I heard the doorbell ring.”

Shawn shared a look with Isabella. While she still looked human, there was that tiny shred of doubt. What if she had the words ‘vampire-witch’ tattooed on her forehead?

Finally, Camila entered the dining room/kitchen. She immediately spotted Isabella and went to introduce herself. Both girls were bubbly and enthusiastic, despite the serious circumstances. Shawn couldn’t help but feel a bit weird. He carried many secrets, but the biggest one had to be that he knew an actual vampire. That secret was just above the one about his relationship with Camila being a business arrangement. Could he really consider it a secret if his team was absolutely horrible at making that seem natural, and that the whole world figured it out years ago? Shawn and Camila were simply bound by contract.

That’s why Isabella Jayn Montgomery was hired.

Shawn checked the time on his phone. It was half past eight, Ann and Jake should be on their way. He shouldn’t have been so nervous about this. It’s not like Ann wouldn’t like the idea of not having to hide anymore… right?

“So you just decided that we were going to go public and not tell me?”

He didn’t really know what he was expecting. Not even five minutes had passed since Isabella, Camila, and Jake left, and Ann got right to it. She was polite through the whole discussion, listening to everything Isabella had to say, and asking questions every so often. But as it turns out, she had her own bone to pick.

Shawn was putting the empty water glasses in the kitchen sink, surprised by his girlfriend’s serious tone. “I thought that was something we wanted?”

“You wanted that,” Ann corrected, sitting at the island. “Look, if you want to stop fake dating Camila, that’s fine, I support that. If you wanna go back to making music for your fans and go back on tour, I support that too. Whatever you wanna do with your career is your decision. But when it comes to our relationship, I get a say too. And I don’t want my privacy taken away.”

“Well…” he trailed off, leaning against the counter. “Just because I get out of my contract doesn’t mean you and I have to go and make out in the middle of the street. It would just be more believable if we were seen out in public together. It would show mine and Camila’s teams that we’re not taking their shit anymore.”

Ann chuckled. “Yeah, I’m not here to be a pawn in a game of publicity chess.”

Shawn sighed and walked around the counter, holding his hands out to her. “They want me and Camila to be engaged, and then have a huge wedding covered by all the major media outlets. I don’t want my life playing out this way anymore.”

She kept her arms folded. “A fake wedding is where you draw the line? Really?”

“If I’m gonna have a wedding, it’s gonna be with you,” he told her.

That particular topic wasn’t new information. Shawn and Ann had talked about marriage in the past and when would be the right time. How their cultures and subcultures were going to come into play. How they would go about it with all this Shawmila nonsense. That’s why Ann remained serious.

“Weddings are clearly not a big deal if these business people are willing to just throw a fake one together. I’m sure your fake girlfriend will look beautiful in a stupid white gown.” She rolled her eyes.

“I wanna see my real girlfriend in a stupid black gown,” Shawn corrected.

 Ann cracked a small grin, but it faded quickly. She sucked in a breath as her face contorted.

“What? What is it?” Shawn asked, concern quickly replacing the building frustration.

She breathed out. “Nothing, just cramps.”

“Stomach cramps? Nausea? What did you eat?”

“Period cramps. I don’t get any of that often but when I do…”

You’re moody as hell and question everything I do, Shawn thought. Only a second later, guilt formed in his chest.

Jinyoung | 2693 words Jinyoung comes home one night after being out with his bandmates and persuades her to venture back out with him. Little does she know what surprises he has planned.

It was early, maybe five, but she'd settled down on the couch of their shared apartment with a book he'd recommended, content to spend the rest of the evening lost in a world of fairy tales and fantastical endings. He'd gone out with his friends after they finished their schedules for that day, adding repeatedly that he was sorry he wouldn't be able to eat with her but they had work-related things to discuss.

She never minded when he stayed out–she knew his work was important and came with crazy hours–but she was surprised to hear the familiar beeps of the keypad barely thirty minutes after she'd sat down.

Not bothering to take off his coat, Jinyoung slid up behind her as the door clicked shut, slipping his arms around her neck and nestling his face next to hers. "Hey, babe."

Her lips twitched into a smile as she turned the page, bumping her head against his gently in hello. "You're home earlier than I thought."

"Mmm..."

If she concentrated, she could smell the barest hint of alcohol on his breath; they must have had wine earlier. He wasn't one to drink much, usually, and he had a lower tolerance than he would ever admit to anyone other than her, but there was no way he was drunk.

It was quiet for a moment, his eyes glossing over the words of her novel as she turned another page. He smiled when he realized it was the one he'd picked out for her. "Hey, babe?"

"Yeah?"

"It's a beautiful night."

"Yeah, it is."

It had snowed the day before, leaving everything covered in a soft dusting of white, not nearly enough to pull the city to a grinding halt but just enough to make everything look a little more magical. It was cold out, but not unbearable, and he knew she loved the way the lights sparkled off the quiet snow.

"Let's do something fun."

"Like what?" she hummed, finally putting down her book and twisting her head to see more of his face. Her breath hitched when she turned, caught by a half-lidded stare and wistful expression.

"I think I wanna marry you."

She blinked once, then laughed, shaking her head slightly. Maybe he was drunk. "I know that, love. We're getting married next year, though." Her eyes drifted to her engagement ring before she brought her hand up, gently threading her fingers through his hair. She understood the sentiment. Between hectic schedules and family requests, they'd had to plan their wedding for a full two years after they got engaged. Out of excitement and a general desire to stay on top of things, they basically had everything planned out; now it was just waiting for the date, and that was the hardest part.

He pouted. "Let's go do something fun, bunny. Please?" He was practically whining, which was both endearing and surprising and made her heart lurch happily in her chest.

She sighed, playfully dramatic, and snapped her book shut. "Well, what did you have in mind?"

His face burst into a smile and he pressed a quick kiss to her cheek before standing up. "Get your coat!"

She laughed, popping up onto her knees on the couch and pulling his face down so she could give him a proper kiss. "Yes sir!" she chirped with a wink and disappeared down the hall toward their bedroom.

As soon as she was out of sight, Jinyoung's smile fell and he slipped his phone out of his pocket, checking his texts. There was one from Jaebum.

All ready.

His fingers flew over the keys.

We're coming.

The response was almost instantaneous.

You nervous?

He frowned.

Yeah. Don't tell the others.

He knew it was futile; Jackson had probably already snatched the phone and he knew he'd be teased for weeks about admitting to the butterflies fluttering uncomfortably in his stomach, but he felt he had to say it nonetheless.

"Alright–let's go!"

He stuffed his phone back in his pocket and held out his hand when she appeared next to him, the grin back in place on his pretty lips. She took it happily, none the wiser to his plans as he led her out the door.

They walked around for a little while, stopping in their favorite coffee shop to grab cups of hot chocolate to sip on as they did. It wasn't long before he hailed a cab, mumbling an address she couldn't hear to the driver. She slipped over to sit in the middle seat next to him, resting her head on his shoulder and twisting their fingers together.

She wasn't sure where they were headed, but the taxi ride was peaceful and, by the time it finally came to a stop, she'd almost been lulled to sleep by the warmth of Jinyoung's hands and the sound of his soft voice whispering absentmindedly in her ear. He nudged her and she whined playfully as she straightened, letting him pull her out of the car as she thanked their driver. When the cab drove off, she finally got a good look at where they were.

An elegant mansion on the outskirts of town, surrounded by acres of sweeping gardens and thin forests. It stood tall and proud, having withstood too many years to count, and was, as it should have been, decorated for the holidays with lights and greenery and warmth. It looked like something straight out of a Christmas fairy tale.

She beamed. "It's our place!"

She turned to him, only to find him watching her, his face lit by the glow from the lights around them. Her cheeks flushed when she realized how intently he'd been staring, but he just nodded.

She squeezed his hand. "In exactly one year, we'll be back here. Getting married." She felt him tense up beside her, just briefly, and glanced at him in concern. "You okay?"

"Yeah." He pulled her toward him, pressing his lips to her forehead. "You wanna go for a walk through the gardens? Then we can go inside."

"Yeah!" She stood on the tip of her toes to kiss his cheek before rocking back on her heels. "Let's go!"

Jinyoung smiled back at her, letting her walk a couple steps ahead of him; when she wasn't looking, he whipped out his phone, sending another quick text to Jaebum before rushing to catch up.

They stopped in the middle of the garden closest to the house, next to a quietly splashing fountain surrounded by rose bushes and lanterns and twinkling lights wound through greenery. She spun around to face him, wrapping her arms around his neck; his hands found their way to her waist, hovering there. When he leaned down to press his forehead against hers, it felt like they were the only people in the world.

"You know what, Jinyoung?"

"What?" He tilted his head just slightly, bumping their noses.

"I love you. So much. More than anything or anyone in the whole world. God, I can't wait to be married to you. Just one more year!"

He broke out of her arms, taking a step back and shaking his head.

"I..." He paused and took a deep breath. Her brow furrowed; he seemed too nervous. "I don't want to wait."

It was the first time he'd voiced his displeasure at having to push their wedding date so far out and her face softened. "I know, but–"

Her voice died in her throat as he slid down to one knee, reaching out to take her hands in his. "Love, will you marry me?"

She blinked in confusion. Hadn't they...hadn't they already done this?

"Jinyoung...we're already engaged," she reminded him gently, her confusion evident on her features.

"I know." It was his turn to smile, his grin lighting up his entire face as he felt his nerves melt away. "Will you marry me tonight?"

It was a joke, obviously, because they had plans and everyone had RSVP'ed for their wedding next December already and her dress wasn't even done yet and she definitely wasn't getting married in leggings and one of his old sweaters, but it made her smile anyway.

"I would marry you anytime, you weirdo," she laughed, but yelped when the silence around them was broken by loud cheering from six carefully-hidden men.

Her eyes widened when Jaebum, Mark, Jackson, Youngjae, BamBam, and Yugyeom all spilled into the courtyard from different directions, her head starting to spin. Where did they come from? How did they know– What–

She looked at Jinyoung, who was back on his feet and pulling her into his arms, his ears bright red but his eyes shining.

"Wait, you weren't–? What's...what's going on, Jin?"

He bent down, his lips next to her ear. They brushed against her skin as he murmured his reply, sending shivers down her spine. "I was serious. Let's get married. Right now."

"But...our...families..." It was hard to think with the way her stomach was doing somersaults. "I mean, I would love to, but–"

"It's not everyone, but our families are here. And close friends. It's the same date, just a year earlier. Surprise?"

"But I'm–"

"Your dress is done. I haven't seen it, I swear! Mark and Jaebum picked it up from the designer last week."

She could hear the other GOT7 members chattering behind them, no doubt telling the whole story of the surprise, but she wasn't listening. She stared up at Jinyoung, her entire body suddenly feeling too warm and tingling in anticipation. Her heart was beating out of her chest in a way that couldn't be healthy and the grin that slowly stretched across her face made his own heart sing back.

"You know what? Yes. Yes I will absolutely marry you tonight. I can't think of a better possible time."

Before Jinyoung had a chance to react, Youngjae had grabbed one of her arms. Mark took the other and they began to drag her away.

“Time to get you dressed up, then!” Youngjae chirped, obviously too excited about the success of their plan (but, honestly, who could blame him, when they’d been working to get everything perfect and keep it a secret for months?).

She laughed, looking back over her shoulder just in time to see Jinyoung wave before he was mobbed by hugs from the remaining members, happy cheers ringing through the cool air.

Her mom and best friend were waiting to help her into her wedding dress. It was everything she’d envisioned, layers of fabric accented with delicate lace and subtle beading, a ball gown fit for a princess. For the first time (but not the last), tears welled up in her eyes and she stubbornly blinked them away, determined not to ruin her makeup, as she hiccuped out countless thank yous.

“You found a really wonderful man.” Her mom smiled, standing next to her as she looked at herself in the mirror, and she nodded, a subtle blush decorating her cheeks.

“He’s the best.”

Her bouquet–green and white and gentle blues–looked like it’d been covered in frost, just the way she wanted, and she smiled when it was handed to her. It was perfect. Everything was perfect. He was perfect.

Her dad was there to walk her down the aisle, and she knew she should take in the sight of the venue decorations but the second she saw Jinyoung, all she could do was stare at him. Music was playing and people were murmuring praises as she passed them, but all she could do was stare at him the way he was staring at her: with all the love in the world, their hearts pounding in the same rhythm.

‘I love you,’ she mouthed and his smile grew impossibly wider when she came to a stop next to him.

The ceremony was a blur. There were sweet confirmations of love and “I do”s accented with tears and congratulatory applauding, and he kissed her softly amongst the rowdy cheers of the other members and her friends. Mostly what she would remember is the way his smile never faded, not once, and how she felt like she was floating.

Between the ceremony and the reception, she and Jinyoung found themselves back in the garden courtyard, this time with a photographer in tow. As requested, she perched lightly on the edge of the fountain, her dress pooling around her; Jinyoung knelt once again next to her, taking her hand. A princess and her prince stopping briefly during a late night stroll.

She leaned forward when the photographer told her to, gasping softly as her tiara slipped. She reached up to straighten it, but Jinyoung was faster, on his feet before she’d even fully noticed what was happening. He beamed down at her as he nestled it back in her loose curls, then, quite forgetting the photographer was even there, cupped her cheeks in his hands and leaned in to kiss her.

Her eyes fluttered closed, one hand resting lightly over his and the other hanging off his arm.

She loved kissing Jinyoung. She loved the way her blood would pound in her ears, the way his fingers ran over her skin, the way his lips felt against hers and the way he would nip at them playfully when he wanted to tease her. But somehow, this was different. This was better.

He pulled back too soon. She was about to whine when she heard the click of a camera, and her face instead blossomed into a dark red.

After a few more pictures, Jinyoung politely asked for just a moment alone with his bride and the photographer hurried off to get pictures of the reception hall.

Breathing a sigh of relief, he wrapped his arms around her waist. “So…” He stared down at her, his eyes twinkling mischievously. “This was a pretty fun way to spend our night, huh?”

She deadpanned, whacking his arm when he burst into laughter and rolling her eyes. “Yeah, I’d say so. How’d you even…?”

He ran his fingers through her hair gently, resting them momentarily on the back of her neck and drawing soft circles there. “Remember that night I came home late after filming for that drama back in March? You’d fallen asleep on the couch waiting for me and I accidentally woke you up and I thought you’d be mad but you just…beamed at me, and I realized I didn’t want to wait anymore. I couldn’t stand not being married to you. I asked the company first if I could get time off, then our families. Then it was just...calling everywhere we’d made reservations and changing the dates. All the guys helped.” He smiled. “The hardest part was trying to keep it a secret. I wanted to surprise you.”

She shivered slightly when a cool breeze picked up and he immediately pulled her to his chest, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and holding her tightly.

“I hope–”

“Don’t you dare say you hope it’s okay that you did this because this was the best surprise in the entire world and god, Jinyoung, I couldn’t stand not being married to you either, but I was trying so hard not to say anything and I–” She paused, trying to figure out how to properly express exactly how much he meant to her. “I just love you–and–”

He was about to pull her in for a long, sweet kiss when they heard shouting in the distance. He looked up and she twisted in his arms until she could see Yugyeom and BamBam racing toward them.

“HYUNGGG! NOONAAAA!”

“THE PARTY’S GONNA START WITHOUT YOU!!”

“I WANT CAKE!”

And Jaebum was there thundering after them, yelling something about leaving them alone, but it obviously wasn’t working. She burst into giggles, her laughter mixing with his as he gave her a gentle squeeze and let her go. She slipped her hand into his, twisting their fingers together, and they began to walk back toward the mansion.

"You know what, Jinyoung? I think this might be the best idea you've ever had.” She winked, and he grinned.

"Me too."

Magnus ran his finger around the rim of his mug, tension saturating his posture as he watched Alec rush around their bedroom, trying to get ready. A sour expression distorted his facial features before he brought the mug to his lips and took a sip. Lately, it seemed Alec regressed in behavior, running to the Institute over every little thing; his siblings acting as if they’ve forgotten how to control the other Shadowhunters in Alec’s absence.

Alec glanced up as he balanced on one foot while trying to pull his boot on the other. “Is everything okay? You look like you’ve been sucking on a lemon.”

“I love your family, I really do, but… have they forgotten how to run the Institute in your absence?” Magnus hated being this person, but he was steadily seeing less and less of Alec. There had been a lot of unsavory things going on with Downworlder politics and Magnus often needed a release, an escape. And as much Magnus enjoyed a good martini, this was the type of drama that called for comfort not found in a bottle.

Alec lifted a brow before righting himself, standing at his full height. “We’ve gotten a lot of new recruits lately. And we’ve lost quite a few seasoned Shadowhunters to Idris. I promise things will go back to normal soon.” He walked over to the bed and dropped a kiss to Magnus’s lips. “As a matter of fact, this Saturday, how about we spend a day in Paris?”

“Uninterrupted?”

“Entirely.” Alec grinned, a little too wide. Something in his expression made Magnus tilt his head curiously.

“You’re hiding something.”

“I am not. I’m just happy at the thought of spending an entire uninterrupted day with you. That is what you want, right?”

“Well, of course. But you’re definitely hiding something. You don’t live for this many centuries and become High Warlock without being able to read people.”

Alec rolled his eyes, trying to stray from his usual defensive mannerisms, “I’m not hiding anything. We have open communication, remember?”

Magnus laughed into his mug, “Oh, I remember, Alexander. I’m not insinuating that you’re hiding something bad. But something, nonetheless. And I will figure it out.”

Alec grumbled under his breath as he turned toward the door, “I’d like to see you try.”

Magnus smirked, “What was that, darling?”

“I love you, have a great day!” Alec said before leaving the bedroom.

“Magnus is going to ruin my engagement plans,” Alec complained in a whisper as soon as he saw his sister in the command room.

Izzy let out a squeal of excitement like she always did anytime Alec brought up that topic. Naturally, she had been the first and only person Alec told, which in hindsight was probably a mistake because she hadn’t dropped the topic since that day.
