Adding on to the 'Larry the gym leader is an isekai victim actually' theory doing the rounds

He picked normal and flying types because they seem the most like just regular critters and birds to him - he has no idea why some people's dogs breath fire here and does not want to know (also think of the extra insurance paperwork alone.. no thanks!)

(With brainstorming thanks to Knacks) He does not believe ghost pokemon are real because ghosts aren't real in general. And since his normal types can neither hit nor be hit by them it kinda cements the argument in his favour really... clearly mirrors and lights and etc
