(part 1) Could go describe the greece thoughts on the war reparations that are asked of germany? I am stuck in a debate with my grandpa because of it. You see my town in germany is broke to the point where they have to cut public transport in order to have the money to repair and build other public transport that is more sustainable ( we have 3 types, only 1 that is cut is working ) and you can see a big hit to our economy coming as the biggest part of our tax payers are older people who want to

(part 2) go into early retirement, meaning cuts in the state retirement fonds and way higher taxes for the rest of us. (that is also why the elder genderation kinda looks down on south europe “they go so early in retirement, they don’t work as long as we do so ofc their economy is bad” ) that with the mentality of saving up for everything and the idea that we worked hard for our economic wonder after the war makes him think that greece is asking out of entitlement ? While in my age group it’s more like we want to help , one of my teachers even phrased it as helping out euopean neighbours helps us too , but at the same time have enough money left over so that the towns still can operate normally ( the city where the grandparents of my bff live didn’t have enough money immediantly to change faulty water pipes in a neighborhood ) and maybe it’s because we’re still in school so the number in the reparation seems really big. //

reparations must be paid and that this is the most suitable situation for this

to happen. Germany has enough money to support its citizens and Greece. I believe with this is the majority opinion of Greeks on the matter. If any Greek wants to add soemthing, feel free to reblog and comment. For now, let’s analyze that a bit more.

To put a disclaimer here, I am not saying that Greece is the perfect state or that it handled its financial matters in the best way. Not all the blame falls on Germans. Greeks are to blame too, of course. We did some poor choices and we can be scumbugs from time to time. But enough blame falls on Germany (as well), enough to not give them the right to accuse Greece this way. At the same time I don’t support the “all Germans are bad” notion. 

Point 1

As I said, reparations must be paid no matter what. And they should be paid especially in this situation because the German Nazi regime harmed Greece A LOT. (I am not implying that all Germans were Nazis, I am not implying that Germany wasn’t hurt by the regime and I am not implying you don’t know your own history. I will do the mention for the reason I just want to lay some numbers.)

The Great Famine was a period of mass forced starvation during the Axis occupation of Greece, during World War II (1941–44). Deaths estimated to 300,000 just from this. People who have survived this are our grandparents and their traumatic experiences bleed into our families. Also, imagine how many more died of sudden mass executions in villages and by opposing the regime. Let’s not mention the Greek Romani, Greek Jewish, Greek people with disabilities and Greek lgbt+ people were led to death camps. At least 80% of the country’s Jewish population, were murdered (that is tens of thousands). Bulgaria had taken the North with German blessings and there was more destruction on their part. So, what sort of “entitlement” is to get money after war crimes being commited onto your country? 

Point 2

At the same time I recognize that simple people had to work very hard to bring Germany back to its feet after WW2. I am not denying that your grandfather and his generation are worthy of good pensions and rest. And, with the current economic state of Germany, I am sure they will take that money. See, Germany has become one of the most influential and powerful states in the EU, even the most powerful someone say. So much that countries like France and the UK are overshadowed and worried about “a German hegemony”. So we know that the government, at least, has the money. (I will elaborate more on that on Point 4).

 Point 3

Now contrast this to Greece. Germans say Greeks are lazy. I say that Greeks have worked very hard to overcome the poverty their nation had. While Germanic kingdoms were thriving, Greece was under Ottoman occupation (which lasted for 200-500 years depending on the area). After 1825 Greeks slowly started getting freed and they had to gather money from level zero to build their new government and offices. Less than 100 years later the nation also suffered from a refugee crisis, as our Greek brothers in the Pontus region were going through a literal genocide so they run to Greece for safety. WW1 before that had brought nation to its knees. And then came WW1. And not to mention the Greek civil war afterwards. More poverty, more hunger for everyone. All we hear from our grandparents is poverty and hunger (unless you are descended from an old rich family, which, for the most of us its unlikely).

So, Greeks always worked to overcome this. We are not lazy but we had one “lazy” generation. It was in the early days of the Euro in the country when the government had money and chose to spend it immoderately on its citizens. The people who were in their prime in the in 80’s-00’s worked normal hours with an extravagant pay. And since they were paid well and the retirement funds were good, they went into retirement early. Other than that, Greeks never worked less, especially less than Germans. Even today, Greeks work the longest hours in Europe, while Germans clock the least hours, according to data by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) reveal. Greeks still work hard to overcome the crisis. Many households are bleeding and striving to keep the basic goods coming into the house. Most of our elderly don’t have enough to take basic medicine because of the extreme cuts in their pensions. And more cuts are on the way (https://www.politico.eu/pro/greek-mps-pass-further-austerity-measures-amidst-violent-protests/). People will retire after their sixties because if they go on retirement they won’t have enough money to even maintain a household. That is because the EU, with Germany as a leading force, put extreme meters of austerity for us and great taxes which grow every year even ten years after the crisis. To top that, Greece almost doesn’t have an industry at all because the EU has make us dependent on other countries (because of our debt). It’s not that we have a great amount of dept. There are countries with great industry that have a huge dept, see USA with its 20 trillion debt. It must be noted that the European countries were quick to put Greece into their debt since our revolution in the 19th century. Of course, I don’t expect anyone to just give Greece money. The problem is that we were put in debt for very small help. Sometimes it was almost like a scam.

Point 4

Moreover, Germany knows the situation in Greece and it’s profiting from it. For example, Fraport, which is majority-owned by state and local governments in Germany, bought 14 Greek airports in 2017. The European commission asked Greece to sell 40% of our state electrical production units. As you will see in this 2015 article, more sales were done. (https://www.marketwatch.com/story/germans-begin-the-looting-of-greece-2015-08-21). “the country must sequester 50 billion euros worth of public assets to sell off at distressed prices to mostly foreign bidders — with German companies first in line.” and “Other assets to be sold will include the ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki and valuable waterfront properties for hotel and casino development. State-owned electricity and train operations are also targeted for privatization.”

Germany made billions from the crisis, as stated in this article. (https://www.thelocal.de/20180621/germany-made-billions-on-greeces-debt-crisis-berlin-confirms) Plus, the German newspaper “Handelsblatt” confirmed that Germany gained 368 billion euros, which is 10% of its Gross Domestic Product - GDP. And how could it not, since it’s buying everything Greece has and on top of it gives us loans with a very high interest rate. It’s obvious that Germany’s government is not here to see us thrive but to gain from our misfortune. If it wanted to see us thrive it would support Greece with investments, not robbery of its state assets. And I say robbery because, due to the crisis, they find the excuse to buy everything very cheap, as we depend on them.

Greeks feel like they are colonized by the Germans, since they just want to milk us and at the same time they treat the country as their vacation resort because our prices have gone down due to the bigger crisis they put us in. I am not ungrateful for tourism but you can see the messy social implications of that. And I should comment on the irony of the situation, since, even with the way Germany treats Greece, Greece’s youth mainly migrates to Germany to work, as there are no jobs here. That means we give the country our knowledge and our labor and we work to advance the country for the benefit of all - while at the same time we are looked down upon because we are supposedly lazy. While having jobs in Germany. There is a chance I go to the country for work, and while with my degree I can help advance the technological companies of Germany, a lot of people will just name me “a lazy Greek” or they will name my parents “lazy Greeks” - my parents who almost pass out of exhaustion working multiple jobs to support the family. Or my grandparents, who opened four different shops (with great debt) because each one was failing and were always struggling to get by.

Seeing all the profit Germany made and will

make, it’s hard for me to believe that the country lacks money. It must be the

government officials that don’t want to give this money to the people. It seems so ridiculous that the state won’t give enough money to your grandparents’ community to do basic things. It’s exactly like the situation in Greece, but our government indeed doesn’t have the money :P In some places our buses are so ancient they barely hold themselves together and you can hear the sounds their metals do as it goes on the road. (And you can feel them, it’s like a Luna Park ride :P) Roads are not fixed, our state buildings (and university buildings among them) are literally collapsing… Like… not such a good situation.

For the fake credentials fiasco: I don’t know how true is this but if it is indeed true, our politicians are scumbags. People who were not government officials at the time didn’t know about this and they didn’t support it. It was a previous government that did all this. Moreover, if Greece gave fake credentials, it was the job of EU officials to check them. It seems they didn’t do their job either, since they let us enter the EU. Or maybe they were as corrupt as our government at the time? And now they want to say they have the moral high ground? As I said, I am not well informed in this case but if it happened both parties are to blame, even in an unequal rate.

THE 9 THINGS THAT ANDY HEI TAUGHT YOU ON COLLECTING ANTIQUES IN HONG KONG  

Hong Kong traded some of the most beautiful antiques that the world has ever seen. We are a free port without currency control. Laws to regulate antique trade are almost non-existent. Hollywood Road in Central is like a repository for collectible items from 83 dynasties of China. The road collects and distributes antiques. It was a popular tourist spot 80 years ago and remains so today.

When he was small, Andy Hei lived in Tsim Sha Tsui, a tourist area, but hung about on Hollywood Road with his father who had been doing antique business in Hong Kong since the age of 16 after departing from Beijing to Hong Kong in search of a better livelihood in 1949.

Andy took over the antique business in 1987 from his father who is now over 80s. He recollected, “Before 1980s, Hong Kong was the trading centre for Chinese antiques as China was closed to foreigners. My Dad told me in those days that there were 2 common ways to sell antiques. One was ‘barter trade’. For example, I exchanged my jade for your vase so that I could later sell your vase to my customer. The second way was to hand-carry antiques to foreign countries including Singapore, America and Britain for sale in exhibitions and fairs. He changed our family completely after selling a piece of antique in Chicago for US$1,000. The money was used to set up his trading firm at home in 1969. My father used to tell me, ‘Son, life is a chain of big hurdles, from birth to death. Only good players can overcome them. Hong Kong did her best in the past. We suffered from and went through Chinese Civil War in the 40s, Korean War in the 50s, Civil Riot in the 60s, Oil Crisis in the 70s, Stock Market Crash in the 80s, Asia Financial Crisis in the 90s and the SARS outbreak in the 2000s. Luckily, we still survive.’ That illuminated me. Despite the commotion last year and coronavirus pandemic this year, I am optimistic regarding the economic recovery of Hong Kong.”

I asked, “What satisfaction do you derive as an antique dealer?” Andy said, “I love history. Every antique is part of history and each piece is often new to me. I enjoy establishing a rich dialogue with historic relics and asking about their past. An antique is also an item having value because of its artistic or aesthetic significance. They are beautiful. Sometimes, I feel like a detective investigating all possible stories about the object, like its condition, rarity, utility, ownership and other unique feature. Antiques are certainly more than collectibles.”

I was puzzled, “For the antique investment of a layman, what is the road to success or road to failure?” Andy laughed, “They are almost the same. Let me tell you 9 interesting observations.”

“Research is the highest form of passion for antiques. When you decide if or not to buy an item, you must know every single detail about it, its past and present. ‘Google’ or ‘Baidu’ is not synonym for research.”

“You also need an antique expert as a mentor——someone that you see regularly and learn from him. A true mentor will not say, ‘You must listen to me or go ahead to buy it.’ He will explore, consider and share the good and bad points about an antique.”

“Always spend only up to 50% of your budget and buy the best piece in your opinion. To err is human and you could have made a wrong decision. So, you must at least have the remaining 50% for a second go. Antique collectors love the best work of art and no wise one will later buy your inferior collections just because they are cheaper.”

“There is never 100 percent certainty about the value of an antique. Be brave! Hold your breath and make a quick decision when you want to buy. If you are irresolute, antique investment is not the right fit for you.”

“You should not toss your focus of interest back and forth. Don’t try to buy too many things like porcelain, jade, figurines, jewellery, furniture and paintings….Be focused and devote your energy wisely to one or two specialties.”

“One should know the 2 markets games: auctions and galleries. Both have risks. Auction house likes to arouse a crowd to bid and price can be excessively high. In a gallery, work of art needs only one person who wants to pay for it but you may be dragged into a difficult negotiation.”

“The price of an antique can be subjective. There is nothing which can better enhance the value of your collected antiques than the promotion to the other collectors of what you had. You may hold exhibitions, organize talks and publish books. After you gather enough friends with shared values and tastes, they may be the potential buyers when you later auction your collections.”

“With all due respect, one is not a true antique collector if he just keeps but never sells. Progress is made only by improving the rarity and uniqueness of your collections. You have to learn to dispose of your relatively inferior pieces in exchange for superior works.”

What a relief that I am not an antique investor as the antique knowledge can only advance by slow steps and not by leaps. An investor without sophisticated knowledge is like a house without a foundation. I asked Andy, “What is your final piece of advice to an antique collector?” Andy answered seriously, “I always dissuade people from leaving their antiques to children who do not appreciate art or history. The ultimate mission of an antique collector is to help preserve relics of the past as our important cultural properties. At the end of his life, it is not about how rich an antique collector could have been. It is about the degree of his loving antiques measured by the degree of his generosity in giving back the valuables to museums.”

Now, I realize some people collect antiques not because they are beautiful. It is because these experts have true and selfless love for the history, art and civilization of mankind.

Mental Illness and the Monster You Don’t Want

I want to talk about something serious today. I guess that is no surprise coming from me, but I do think it is a very important subject to talk about. As many people can become triggered easily, I will give a trigger warning. I really hope however that you can take a moment to prepare yourself, and continue to read, because this is important. This post will talk about a tragic murder that happened 9 years ago, and about mental illness. 

Back in 2008 a tragic incident occurred in Canada. While riding a Greyhound Bus, 22 year old Tim McLean was tragically murdered by 40 year old Vince Li. The young man was stabbed multiple times while frightened passengers fled the bus. Li then continued to behead Tim, and started to consume parts of his body. Many were witnesses to this, including some RCMP officers who would later suffer from PTSD due to the horrifying nature of what they saw. The whole country mourned for the young man, and our hearts went out to his family.  During the time of the trial, Li was seen by psychiatrists, and pleaded insanity. His mental health was brought to the foreground, and it was revealed that Li suffers from extremely bad schizophrenia. He was unmedicated at the time and had no supports in place to help him cope with his condition. At the time of the killing, he had heard “The Voice of God” who told him that the young man beside him was a force of evil who was about to execute him. Fearing for his life, Li committed the heinous actions that ended Tim’s life. He was declared NCR (not criminally responsible) and sent to a mental institution, where he spent the next 9 years. During his time there, as he continued to work on his mental health, he was slowly granted more and more allowances, until very recently when he was released all together- being granted Absolute Discharge. 

Now, that is the backstory for anyone who hasn’t heard any of this in the news. Since his release there have been countless people on social media who are outraged. They call Li (who now goes by Will Baker) a monster, danger to society, and call for him to be locked up for life. I have even seen some people who call for his execution (because you know, we totally believe in Capital Punishment in Canada). I would like to take a moment to state on record that I am not talking about my personal feelings over the murder of Tim. It was tragic, and that fact is indisputable. By writing this post, I am not trying to insult any friends or family, and I am not trying to disrespect this young soul. I am simply going to talk about mental illness, and rehabilitation. I am talking about the present, and not the past incident.  Recently social media celebrated Let’s Talk Day, in which most people identified themselves as an ally to those who suffer from mental illnesses. Some even identified as someone who personally has a mental illness. However, from the comments I have read recently, they should have identified as an ally to people who have illnesses that are not super scary but enemies to those who are scary.

Schizophrenia is as important of a mental health issue to acknowledge as depression and anxiety. It is categorized as abnormal social behaviour, and a failure to understand what is or is not real. Suffers could have false beliefs, unclear thinking, and even see or hear voices that others do not. With the inability to tell that this voices are not real, they believe in them, and experience them as reality. It is not a “curable” condition, however can be managed through means of medication and therapy. At the time Vince Li was not on medication and was not seeking therapy. He was living life with this horrible condition and experienced everything around him as completely real. To him, God spoke to him and warned him that he was about to be hurt. That conversation happened to him as much as the conversation you had with the cashier at the grocery store happened to you. Once he was hospitalized, and started understanding and working on his mental disorder, he understood what he had done was wrong. But more than that, he felt remorse. He even begged to die, because it was so hard to live with the act that he committed. With doctors help, he has worked himself to a point where he understands what needs to be done to stay safe. Now, let’s look at a couple of the legal mumbo-jumbo that we need to understand here. First, NCR. Here is what the Canadian Criminal Code has to say about NCR. “No person is criminally responsible for an act committed or an omission made while suffering from a mental disorder that rendered the person incapable of appreciating the nature and quality of the act or omission or of knowing that it was wrong.” It does not take away responsibility from the guilty party, but rather lessens the responsibility if they were not in a healthy enough state of mind. Someone with schizophrenia as extreme as Li’s was not mentally capable of understanding that he was committing a crime at the time that he committed it. He did not go free either, but was locked away for almost 10 years.  Next, Absolute Discharge. To receive a discharge from a crime, there are a large number of criteria that must be met. It is not a decision that is taken lightly, and is only done in cases where it is deemed appropriate to do so. In the case of Li, he was rehabilitated and released (which has nothing to do with the Absolute Discharge), however with the criminal record over his head would find life impossible to continue. Now, many people would say “Justice!” for his life not being easy, but remember that he did not ask for this mental condition, he showed remorse for what he had done, and he spent 9 years rehabilitating himself.  “Well, no one can force him to take his medication now!” Yes, that is true, however it also doesn’t mean that he will stop taking it, or stop working with doctors. All that it means is that he no longer has to deal with the legal system in regards to this crime. I would like to draw a parallel about the issue of taking medication. I am on a very large amount of anti-depressants at the moment. The last time that I was off of them, I decided that I was going to take a pill every time that my boyfriend-at-the-time insulted me, because I couldn’t live with the way he was making me feel about myself. I was close to killing myself. Since getting medicated, I have realized that all of that was my mental illness talking. The medication helps me not want to harm or kill myself (or others), but without it I am in danger. I do not want to be in danger, therefore I will keep taking my pills. It is really that simple, and can be that simple for Will Baker (fka Li). He doesn’t want to hurt people. The last time he was not on medication he killed someone. Therefore, he will stay on his pills.  The last thing that I want to talk about is the difference between “justice” “vengeance” and the ability to rehabilitate people. Justice, from a legal standpoint is defined as “n. 1) fairness. 2) moral rightness. 3) a scheme or system of law in which every person receives his/ her/its due from the system, including all rights, both natural and legal.” The system did actually give Vince Li his “due”. He was declared NCR (by the system), spent 9 years in a rehabilitation centre (by the system), and was deemed to be no longer a threat to society (by the system). So when you scream for “justice”, justice was actually served.  Vengeance is the word you are actually looking for here. First, it is worth noting that vengeance does not have a legal definition. So we will look at the standard definition: “noun1.infliction of injury, harm, humiliation, or the like, on a person by another who has been harmed by that person; violent revenge:But have you the right to vengeance?2.an act or opportunity of inflicting such trouble: to take one's vengeance. 3.the desire for revenge: a man full of vengeance.4.Obsolete. hurt; injury.5.Obsolete. curse; imprecation.” The desire for revenge. It is understandable for the family members of Tim to seek vengeance, however the rest of us citizens have no right to do so. Once we start seeking out or committing acts of vengeance we are really no better than the criminals themselves, and are in fact trying to live in an anarchy.

Our current legal system works to rehabilitate people. It is why there is a system of parole. Funnily enough, had Li not been deemed NCR, he would have been sent to jail for 2nd degree murder; in Canada that means life in prison with chance of parole between 7-25 years. Parole is granted based on a number of conditions, including chance to reoffend. Li’s doctors have released him based on the collected agreement that he is extremely unlikely to reoffend. So, he could have been released sooner if the “justice” system that people call for worked in their favour. 

TL:DR time: Unless you have a medical degree and have worked with Li for a long enough time that you know his condition, how it affects him, and his chances to reoffend, you do not have the authority to speak about whether or not “justice” has been served with his release. You also cannot claim to be an ally to people with mental conditions, and then treat someone the way that you are all treating him. He committed a terrible crime, but was suffering from a terrible illness that he did not ask to have. He has worked towards rehabilitation, and deserves the chance to live a life, however filled with remorse it is, as a mentally healthy man. 

Please, think before you judge. Research before you get angry. Think about how all aspects of this case are affected. Be an ally to everyone who suffers from any condition, regardless of the stigma attached to it. And until next time, stay crazy <3

Bart Brewer, a Priest Turned Anti-Catholic 

In my early years as an apologist, most of my sparring partners were Fundamentalists. A few were Evangelicals. Others belonged to native-born sects, such as Mormonism and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Still others belonged to foreign imports, such as Iglesia ni Cristo, a cultish group that originated in the Philippines.

Some of my opponents once had been Catholic. Their animus toward the Church usually was greater than that of born non-Catholics. I always thought the apostates to be like the young man who, once so infatuated with his girlfriend, insists only after he jilts her that all along she was a vile creature about whom nothing good can be said.

Former priest turned against the Church

It was that way with the late Bart Brewer, a one-time Discalced Carmelite priest. He was brought up in Philadelphia with, apparently, a coddling mother and too little experience of everyday life. As he freely admitted in writing a short account of his background, after his ordination in 1957 his religious superiors sent him to the Philippines, from which he was summarily booted back home after becoming infatuated with a high school girl. (There seemed to be nothing beyond infatuation in the relationship.)

Back in the States, Brewer underwent a change of religious allegiance. He became a Seventh-day Adventist because his mother became one. Later he became a Baptist. At some indeterminate point he concluded that his calling was to undermine the Church he once had been part of. Perhaps it simply was that he wasn’t trained for anything other than religious work and, then near 40, didn’t see any other avenue open to him.

I’ve seen that kind of thing working in the other direction too: older converts to the Catholic Faith, some of them already into early middle age, looking around and realizing that they were at a loss as to what to do. In their Protestant churches they had held positions of authority, but now they were Catholic laymen without jobs. Not a few of them began ministries of their own. A few proved able to settle in well, but others, perhaps never quite setting aside their Protestant mindsets, ended up taking their ministries (or perhaps their ministries took them) to the edge of Catholicism—or over the edge.

Some became as bitter toward their former Protestant faith as Brewer became toward his former Catholic Faith. Not satisfied with jilting the Church, he had to attack it too, which he did for decades through the ministry he founded, Mission to Catholics International. (“International” was a bit misleading, since all of Brewer’s touring and speaking seemed to be confined to the U.S.)

A lack of training in the Faith

I once visited Brewer at his office, which was in a building located on the grounds of the church that he attended but wasn’t the presiding minister of. It wasn’t a large office since his ministry was small: himself, his wife, a few volunteers to stuff envelopes. Trying to find something innocuous to say, I complimented him on having several good books on his shelves. He waved away my remark, saying that he didn’t read them or any other books because all he needed to read was the Bible. He seemed to take pride in not being what George Wallace used to call a “pointy-headed intellectual.”

(Weirdly, for months his ministry stocked my book Catholicism and Fundamentalism, presumably because I devoted a chapter to Brewer, who never had been written up at such length. Suddenly the ministry ceased stocking it. I suppose someone told Brewer that, while he might like publicity, the chapter about him undercut his credibility and hardly could be expected to expand his following.)

Although Brewer’s seminary training had been before Vatican II—at a time, most of us would think, when such training must have been solid—he seemed to know little about Catholicism, other than that now he opposed it. The 80/20 MPF, localized targeting, public profiles SEO, aggressive email lists exploiting, double viral loop, delayed monetization and strength prioritizing; these are the seven most significant growth hacks that LinkedIn has been using since the beginning. These golden seven must-knows are as elegant as they are useful.The LinkedIn concept was established at the end of 2002 when Reid Hoffman gathered a team of old SocialNet and PayPal colleagues to work on a new startup. As it is true for many leading startups nowadays, LinkedIn was rooted on the "80/20 MPF" (Market/Product Fit) growth hack designed to get the first traction ASAP and with minimal risk. That first growth hack ("80/20 MPF") implies coping another product that is already at Product/Market Fit stage and has enough market adoption. Again, new users got a list of potential connections from their former companies. Hoffman applied to this growth hack methodology again when the "Endorsements" feature debuted in 2012, as yet another way that new and active users can help reactivate their unengaged connections.The sixth growth hack of LinkedIn’s marketing engine is a delayed monetization. Hoffman was a huge believer in obtaining one million users, getting them engaged, and only then building a business model on top of that. That’s precisely why the company started from free sign-ups and had kept the "freemium" model since its release in 2005.Technically, LinkedIn kicked off their monetization efforts with Adbrite ads in mid-2004. The returns on these ads was insignificant, however, and it wasn’t until 2005 that LinkedIn launched three more lucrative revenue streams: job listings, subscriptions, and advertisements. It was no coincidence that they achieved profitability in 2006.LinkedIn’s seventh growth hack is very enlightening and permeates all aspects of the startup’s strategic and tactical growth; it’s about focusing on developing strengths rather than improving weaknesses.As it was driving 40% of signups by 2008, the LinkedIn homepage was already a particular strength for the company, whereas email invitations could account for just 4% of growth. The emails had a 5% CTR (Click-Through Rate) for inactive users, but a 20% CTR for active users. Rather than trying to woo inactive users, LinkedIn chose to once again focus on their strengths, making the emails more appealing to active users by testing subject lines, copy, and formatting. They are proud of serving their motherland Major. They have respect and honour. And I am glad they have earned it. But we have so conveniently seized their security and safety. Paleozoic 50k

  The Paleozoic 50k turned out to be one of the most adventurous runs of my life. From the moment I signed up for the Spring version of this race it was my intention to use this as a long training run for the Kettle 100k in June. Little did I know how interesting this race would become. 

   First off, anytime you sign up for a race in March and you live in Northern Illinois you have absolutely no clue what to expect weather wise. The day prior to the race it was sunny and we hit a high of 80 degrees. Overnight however the temperatures dropped drastically in the low 40′s and it was raining. A moderate to light rainfall started falling very early in the morning. We also knew via an email from the RD that 1 spot on the course had about 4 inches of water. It was pretty safe to say it was going to be a sloppy mess. I was more concerned with chaffing and blisters so I coating my feet with Trail Toes and covered my body with 2Toms. 

   I carpooled to the race with my running bestie Janel and another bad ass running Trudi. It rained pretty much the entire way. Giving the temperatures, I had thrown some extra clothes in my bag including a light windbreaker. I had originally planned to do the race in a singlet. I even wore it to the race, however I knew I was going to be cold and damp so I actually put on my long sleeve race shirt I got when I picked up my race packet over my singlet. I then put on my windbreaker and Janel happened to have an extra poncho so I decided why not. One thing I threw in my bag at the very last minute was my Sugoi running mittens. I had never used them for a run this long but wow what a difference. 

    As the horn went off signaling the start of the race we started out running across a grassy terrain the was soaked and muddy. I felt the cold rain water in my shoes within the first 50 feet. Fortunately, my Hoka One Challengers drain well. The course itself was 2 out and back loops. Due to course conditions and possible deterioration of the original planned course the RD changed from the Spring course to the Fall course for this race. The following picture was pretty much the norm throughout the course.

This photo really shows the mud we had to deal with all day along with other spots was basically a stream of water that was deep enough to cover your shoes. One of the best decisions I made was to wear gaiters. Not because I thought is would keep rocks out of my shoes because I had a ton of small rocks in my shoes but to actually help keep my shoes on and not get stuck in the mud. 

    I ran with Janel during the entire race but we also ran with Kimmie and Latoya for the 1st loop. Also in my group at least for the first 6 or so miles was Jay. A runner who was on my Ragnar team 2 years and had suffered some knee issues but now he was back and he looked really strong on the course. 

   I decided to leave my water bottles for my vest at home and just used the cups at the unmanned aid station and at the turn around aid station. That worked out fine.

    Pace wise we were a little faster then I would have liked for the 1st 7.75 but I didn't have any major issues. We walked the hills and any sections that at least in my opinion couldn’t be safely run. My #1 goal in this race was to stay on 2 feet and not fall. I don’t have time for injuries. We got to the turnaround aid station and I stuck with Gatorade and PB&J sandwiches. We didn’t spend much time there and we started back towards the starting line. I think it was a cumulation of little slips and slides as I started to get some pain in the hip flexor area about 10 miles in but nothing to serious. My back felt good and so did my legs. 

   The challenge heading back to the start was going through those tricky areas either the opposite way we approached them originally. Obviously, uphill going out was downhill going back. I was constantly scanning ahead of me to find the safest path to take but we managed through it all. As we approached the starting line or 15.50 miles I starting wondering if there would be 50k runners who would decide to DNF and choose not to go back out through that muck again. It turns out a few runners did decide to DNF. That’s really the downside to multiple out and backs because the temptation is there to throw in the towel. That wasn’t an option for Janel or I. 

    I refueled at the starting line and left the aid station a few minutes before Janel I wanted to start out walking and I knew Janel would catch up fast. It hadn’t been raining so I left my poncho at the aid station. As I thought Janel caught up to me quickly and indicated her desire to get the race done. She had a very strong pace the next 2 miles and I was really struggling my legs were in shuffle mode as the pain in my hip flexor got much worse when I opened up my stride. I indicated this to Janel but as she very politely put it. If she was running at a good clip she needed to keep going and that I could catch up to her on the hills. I’ve been doing a lot of hill training and it helped me immensely. Although, I probably could of used some more walking breaks Janel’s determination to “get it done” kept pushing me forward. The pain was really bad about 20 miles in. Janel had some ibuprofen and was nice enough to share it with me. Probably the best decision I had ever made.

   We got to the turnaround aid station 23.25 and I started inhaling Chex mix and Gatorade. Janel had found some sliced pickles that she put in cup. The plan was I would start back to the finish line and Janel would eat her pickles and catch up to me. As I left the aid station lots of things started going through my head. First and foremost was that I wanted to finish this race with Janel. I’ve logged a ton of miles with her and this was the 1st time we got to race together. I knew if she caught up to me the first couple of miles back I’d be finishing alone. So right then and there I decided I was going to stay ahead of her the next 5 miles all the way to the thick mud. Bigger hills came after that and I knew  if I made it to the mud I’d finish with her.  Well, the ibuprofen must have kicked in because I was able to open up my stride and I virtually pain free in my hip flexor. The other thing I did was run that next 5 miles with reckless abandon. Even through the thicker mud I just kept going. I though caution to the wind and just attacked. From time to time the first couple miles going back I peaked over my shoulder and I still saw Janel. Actually, she got right up to me as I was walking up a hill. So, after that hill I decided I’d start running the hills. I caught up to another runner Jodi. I was overheating so I ditched my windbreaker and stuffed it in my pack. I reached the unmanned aid station about 27.1 miles and I passed right by it. I looked back and saw Janel with Jodi. There was a gradual downhill before the mud so I just kept running recklessly all the way to the mud. I had achieved what I set out to do. Janel got to the mud shortly after me. I was pretty damn tired but I still felt good. A couple of miles and hills later I finished with Janel in front of a great crowd of people who stayed to watch the last few people finish! 

  Janel achieved a new 50k PR! I got to finish a race with my running bestie and this race was a huge confidence builder for my upcoming 100k! A popular African Proverb say “If you want run fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together!” Teamwork is everything! I absolutely loved everything about this race!!
