Samhain let Nettie take the lead, in both the journeying and conversation - he'd always been a better listener than talker, he often said. And it was just a delight listening to the girl's stories. He was just happy her mood had been lifted and all memory of the previous unpleasantness were put behind her; at least for the meantime.
He listened attentively, nodding along as she babbled about her adventures and misadventures about the inn and the green where it was safe for them to venture. He held her hand firmly when they were locked together (though not too tightly, he had to keep reminding himself) and let her go every time she dashed off or wanted to show him something or simply wanted to twirl about in the sun. And every time, Samhain smiled wide and laughed with her.
It wasn't long before they spotted their first cat - Snowbell. Samhain agreed that she very did much resemble a princess (having met his fair share of royal maidens, he could attest). While Snowbell was a princess, Pumpkin reminded Samhain of a steely-eyed general who had seen too much and feared very little of the world. They greeted the ginger from afar, Samhain even giving a little bow of respect.
Though there were some missing from the roster, they finally crossed paths with Chester. Samhain found his energy and enthusiasm rather amusing, as if reminding him of someone back home. While Nettie approached the calico, Samhain crouched down to make himself as small as possible but stayed where he was. He was aware of the effect he was having on the felines but hoped their familiarity with Nettie would assuage them.
Saved from a trap. Samhain smiled, seeing how happy and healthy the creature was now compared to the state they initially found it in. "Ah see," he said, keeping his hands to himself. He didn't want to reach out to the cat in case he'd scare it away. He answered Nettie's question in a soft voice, heavy with reminisce. "..Ah also saved her life. Someone fed her poison. Ah healed her an' brought her home with me.. An' we've been together ever since."
Nettie clapped her hands in delight when Samhain agreed to join her on a kitty hunt, while Gruff tilted his head and gave a puzzled whine at his words. He whined again when they kept him from following them outside. He still obeyed and stayed put when Nettie promised she’d give him another treat later.
The child seemed to have recovered from her earlier distress. No more tears or faltering speech — she walked with a skip in her step now, guiding Samhain around the vast yard, her words rushing like water in a stream. She shared stories about misadventures, about falling from trees or slipping on mud, showing him bandaids as evidence (always adding that she’d been very brave and hadn’t cried at all). Sometimes she glimpsed a shiny stone and stopped to put it in her pocket. Sometimes she dashed ahead of him in a burst of energy: bounding over grassy hills, laughing or twirling around. She always rejoined Samhain before long and sought to hold his hand again.
Though some patches of mud remained, sunlight warmed the Oak Haven grounds, and the pleasant weather lured out some once-hidden cats. Nettie spotted Snowbell sunbathing on a boulder. She was a dignified cat — “like a princess,” as Nettie described her to Samhain — who took pride in her sleek white fur. The second she saw them, her ears flattened back in displeasure. She leapt off the boulder and stalked into the bushes, fluffy tail held high.
Pumpkin, another cat, sat perched on a tree branch along the trail. He was a grizzled old warrior with a crooked tail and a notched ear. His scruffy orange fur and scars told tales of encounters with thorns and creatures alike. He gazed down at them, swishing his tail slowly back and forth, and blinked in gratitude when Nettie complimented his long whiskers. Though he looked at Samhain with suspicion, he was much too world-weary to bother running away.
Gwen, Biscuit, and Butternut proved too elusive to find in the end, but they eventually found Chester playing with butterflies in the long grass. He was a three-legged calico kitty who tripped and rolled over at times while running. He always bounced upright in seconds and resumed the chase with just as much enthusiasm. Upon seeing the duo, he darted away from them at first, sensing something amiss about the green-eyed stranger. After Nettie called him a few times, he cautiously approached them.
Nettie crouched and offered her hand to the cat. He sniffed it, then glanced up at Samhain warily. “It’s okay,” she reassured him, soft and soothing. “He’s a friend. He’s nice.” Chester faltered once more, then rubbed against her fingers and moved closer, inviting more pets. Nettie beamed and sat on the ground properly, heedless of dirt staining her clothing.
“Chester likes us the most,” she told Samhain as she scratched the cat’s chin. Chester closed his eyes in contentment, a purr humming in his throat. “We saved him from a trap, and we give him lots of treats. That’s why we’re friends.” She smiled at Samhain. “How’d you and Nightie become friends?”
#hearthtales#PLEASE i could read a whole book about the cats of Oak Haven#be the spiritual successor to warrior cats lmaooo#also LOVE how you wrote all the cats' different reactions to Sam's spookiness~#absolutely!! no worries for now we just vibin with kitties#we need this before all the chaos that'll unfold :')))

can't take the home out of oklahoma - i. (k.c.)
a/n: eeee! a fever dream later, i've finally cobbled together the first part of my top gun: maverick and twisters crossover fic! it's going to be lengthy so we are in for quite the ride! it's way heavier on twisters, so any non-top gun fans should have no problem reading this. future parts will deal with darker content that's only referenced right now, so that'll all be tagged and marked accordingly. for now, it's just my standard cup of angst. reblog and comments are always appreciated!!
summary: After a twisted stroke of luck, you leave behind your whole life in San Diego, California and find yourself in Oklahoma with Tyler Owens and his Tornado Wranglers.
warnings: swearing, weather inaccuracies, flashbacks, reference to past trauma, alcohol
word count: 5.7k
Your finger rubs gently over the crinkled piece of paper Jake had torn off for you, the phone number and the name Tyler Owens written in the neat penmanship the blonde prided himself on.
If you ever find yourself down South and need something, Jake had said, a bit out of breath as he’d run out of the house after you. If you need anything, call that number. They’ll help you.
The cursor blinks back up at you on the call pad, your cracked screen making a mockery of you. The chaos of the San Diego airport whirls around you, pressing in on you the longer you sit here.
You take a deep breath and press call.
-
His phone starts vibrating on the table and he frowns, eyebrows furrowing as the team, crowded around the table in the RV, goes quiet.
He answers, despite it being an unknown number. “Tyler Owens.”
“Hi. Uh,” A shaky breath comes from the other end of the receiver before introducing themselves to him. “Uh, Jake Seresin gave me your number. Told me to call if I needed anything.”
His gut drops at the name, a clench in his heart. “What can I do for ya?”
“Look, I’ve- I’ve had a rough week and I’m, I’m sort of finding my life upside down. And uh, I guess I’m just grasping at straws here. Jake said, he said you could help me.”
“That so? Well, I’m afraid you’re gonna have to be more specific. How can I help you? What can I do for you?”
“A- a purpose, maybe? I need a purpose, something to do. Um, I’m in San Diego right now but I need to get out of here.”
Tyler frowns, eyes flicking around at his team. They’re all curious as to what’s unfolding, and he scrubs at his forehead, knowing they’ll be upset with him for pulling the trigger on this without talking it through with them first.
But damn it, this girl sounded scared and Jake had sent her to him. Had told her he’d help her, and he would see to it that he did.
He wasn’t going to leave her behind.
“Tell you what, get yourself on a plane to Oklahoma. I’ll come get you. You can come work with me and my team.”
“You- your team?” Though she sounds hesitant, she almost sounds relieved at having some sort of direction now.
“Storm chasers. Ish. We’re doing some field research out here in Tornado Alley, but I’ve got a team, the Tornado Wranglers. And honestly, we need another set of hands out of here managing the backend of things.”
The word managing was the wrong choice as it immediately sends his team into protest. Boone stands up abruptly, Javi and Kate whispering protests to him, as Lilly starts making a face. He waves a hand, wanting them to be quiet.
The last thing he needed was for this girl to hear, to hang up, to not follow through.
“Okay.” You say, and he thinks he hears you stand up. “Okay, I’ll find the soonest flight out. Um, what kind of things do you need help with? My background- it’s not in science.”
“Don’t worry about it, I’m sure we could find something around here you can help with. Research grant editing or something.”
“I’ve actually got experience with that.” You say with a choked laugh, and Tyler can feel the relief bleed through the phone. He smiles a bit, pressure easing as he does.
“Then we’ll make sure we put you to work.” There’s a beat as he hears the intercom in the airport go off in the background. “Listen, text me when your flights supposed to land. I’ll make sure I’m there to get you. We’re out in the field right now, so it may be a bit of trek out here, but I’ll make sure you get here.”
You confirm and he hangs up and his team starts yelling before the phone is even back on the table.
“We don’t need another team member man-“
“A manager? What kind of business do you take this for?”
“Are you serious? Kate and I, we’ve got the grant stuff covered-“
“This really tells us how you feel about us, Owens.”
He glances at Kate, who’s looking at him with a guarded expression he hasn’t seen since he first met her. She doesn’t excuse herself, simply pushing her way out, climbing around the back of Javi and Boone.
-
It would be hard to miss Tyler, the way he’s signing an autograph, cowboy hat atop his head as he leans against the truck branded with the Tornado Wranglers logo.
You stop dead, a cold feeling washing over you at the eerie reminder of the person you’d just left behind.
This Tyler Owens might be Jake Seresin’s doppelgänger, and based on what you’d seen during the flight you were beginning to suspect the only difference between them is the way they chased the adrenaline high.
During the flight, you’d bought in-flight WiFi for the first time in your life, just to learn who these people were, who you’d be spending time with. Trying to understand what you’d gotten yourself into.
Tyler perks up at the sight of you, a smile growing on his face. He holds out his hand and you take it, noting the genuine smile. You shake his hand, swallowing around the burning desire to ask the question.
“Welcome to good ol’ Oklahoma.” He welcomes. “You ready to hit the road? The team is a bit of a ways out.”
You nod as Tyler grabs your small duffel bag, throwing it in the back of the truck before you can even ask.
You climb in the front, taking note of all the gadgets the truck is equipped with. “What’s all this?” You ask, as he turns the key, pulling away from the curb. “Storm chasing stuff?”
“You could say that. The trucks decked out with all kinds of stuff.”
The radio is soft in the background as Tyler talks to you about the team, about what you’ll be doing.
As Tyler talks, as you talk, as you both think of things for you to do, you begin to lose interest in the conversation as the Oklahoma skyline begins to paint itself into a deep orange.
“Can we stop?” You ask, voice full of wonder as you peer out windshield, watching the sky transform itself.
You feel Tyler look over at you, before turning on his blinker despite the lack of cars around. The truck rolls to a stop as you dig around, pulling the disposable camera you’d bought from the bottom of your backpack. Tyler hasn’t even parked before you’re slipping out of the truck, walking around the front to take a picture of the sunset.
“I haven’t seen a sunset like this since I was a kid.” You breathe, the camera clicking as you do.
“I hear California has pretty good sunsets.” Tyler says, sticking his hands in his pockets as he stands next to you.
You shrug. “They do, but if you’re in the inner city, a lot of times the good ones are hard to catch. They’re easier to see at the beach but the marine layer blocks a lot of the good ones.” You say, turning to Tyler. “At least in my opinion. We can get back on the road now.”
He nods, eyes steadily watching you as you turn on your heel, climbing back in the truck. Tyler’s a few beats behind you, still standing in the same spot as you buckle your seatbelt.
The rest of the drive is quiet, the flow of quiet country music coming through the radio as the Oklahoma skies turns from dusk to night.
By the time you roll up to camp, it’s clear that Tyler’s team has gone to bed, save for one.
An older man perks up at the sight of you, climbing to his feet from his chair. “Ah, Tyler. Was just about to call and see where you were. This our new teammate?”
Tyler nods, introducing you to this man. You step forward taking his outstretched hand.
“Dexter.” He says, a smile on his face. “You must’ve had a long day. We’ve got some leftovers, can I get you anything? We’ve also got our extra tent set up, it’s where you’ll be sleeping.”
You glance at Tyler, although you’re not sure for what. Reassurance maybe. “I’d love some food. And a water maybe? I don’t have a water bottle with me anymore.”
It’s almost a natural instinct to wince at the thought of the loss of your emotional support water bottle that was probably laying in some crevice in the wreckage in Texas.
Dexter sets to work as Tyler settles himself in front of the fire, a beer in hand. “We’re meant to head to town tomorrow anyways. We’ll stop, get you stuff to help out with the team. Maybe some new camping gear and whatever.” He takes a sip of his beer, cringing as he does. “Just realizing you’ll probably have to sleep on the dirt; I don’t think we’ve got any extra protectors after we visited the last wreckage. We should probably get more stuff tomorrow anyway.”
“It’s no worries.” You say with a wave of your hand. “I was a Girl Scout for like, eight years, so it’s not a big deal. Won’t phase me.”
A head pops out from a tent nearby. Tyler perks up at the sight of him, as the man sticks his hands in the pockets of the zip-up he’s wearing. “You want a jacket?”
You glance down, realizing you’re shivering. “Uh, yeah, that’d be nice.”
He gives you a cautious smile before looking to Tyler. “Hey Ty, man, I’ve got an extra pullover in the back of the van, can you grab it?”
Tyler nods as the man reaches a hand out. “I’m Javi.”
You shake it, introducing yourself.
“You from around here? You don’t sound it.”
You shake your head. “San Diego, actually.”
Tyler comes back the same time Dexter comes back with your food and Dexter waits patiently as you scramble, pulling the soft material over your head.
It smells strongly of rain in a way you can’t explain. In a way, the smell brings you a sliver of comfort.
You take the food from Dexter as you do, thanking him.
“Dexter, this is incredible.” You say around the bite.
“It’s an old family recipe from down in the bayou. I’ve tweaked it so we can make it out here on the road, but it’s a crowd pleaser when I do.”
“You from New Orleans?” You ask and he nods. “My boyf- my ex boyfriend now I guess-“ You say, taking another bite in hopes to hide the awkward way you swallow around those words. “He’s from out there too.”
Dexter sighs. “I miss that place, I do. But it wasn’t easy to stay after Katrina. I lost my whole family.”
Your heart pangs, at his words, and it aches, at the thought of the person you’d left behind.
“I’m very sorry to hear that.” You say softly.
Javi clears his throat. “You need anything else?” You shake your head and he stands up again. “I really oughta get to sleep, but we’ll chat more tomorrow, yeah?”
You nod and Javi gives you another cautious smile. In your heart, you want to believe there’s maybe a little hope hidden in it too.
Dexter also bids you and Tyler goodnight, and the two of you sit there, the crackling fire filling the silence as you eat.
“Thank you Tyler.” You say softly, staring at the burning embers after you’ve finished eating.
You know you should explain to him how it all happened, how you got here, but Tyler doesn’t ask and you can’t forget the vision in your head of Steven’s cold eyes, unseeing.
“You’re giving me a second chance here, and I really do appreciate it.” You settle on instead.
He nods. “Whatever I can do to help.”
You excuse yourself, bidding the man goodnight, only to find yourself tossing and turning on the hard ground.
You thought sleep would come to you easier, with how emotional the last week has been, but everytime you close your eyes and a breeze rolls through, it all comes flooding back, the haze of freezing rain, of a rusty storm grate, a heavy body, and so much blood-
The sound of a door shutting (from the RV if you had to guess,) causes you to open your eyes, sitting up on the makeshift bed.
“I don’t want her here Tyler.” A female voice says, and you frown.
There’s a beat.
“Too bad Sapulpa, she’s staying.” Tyler responds.
“Stay here and do what?” The girl asks incredulously. “We don’t need her help. And I didn’t know you’re suddenly in the business of helping out random strangers who call you in the middle of the day-“
“This is our whole business, Kate.” He says firmly. “We help people. Strangers. That’s what we’re here to do, remember?”
“And how are you helping her?”
Tyler’s quiet for a minute again. “We’re giving her a second chance.”
“A second chance? Are you serious?” The girl, Kate, huffs.
“It wasn’t that long ago it was you who needed a second chance. We gave that to you, remember?”
Another zipper being yanked cuts off Kate’s response.
“Yo!” It’s Javi. “Can y’all argue about this tomorrow?”
You don’t hear the sound of Kate’s footsteps but you hear the slam of the RV door loud and clear.
Tyler goes through the motions, getting the camp cleaned up, before putting the fire out. And then you hear him slip into the RV and for the first time in days, in the quiet of the Oklahoma night, it feels like you can breathe.
-
You awake with a gasp, clawing at the blankets as if it was Jake’s flannel, holding on for dear life through the storm.
You swallow back the bile threatening to spill over and blindly climb from the nest of blankets, pulling the zipper down, and stumbling into the sun.
You swallow as someone’s head turns. It’s a girl, sat at the table the crew has set up outside. You pull yourself from the tent, unable to shake your nerves as you take in the soft baby pink hues above her in the sky.
You introduce yourself softly and she gives you a tight smile in between bites of yogurt. “Kate.”
Your heart clenches, realizing this must be the girl you’d heard last night.
It’s an awkward silence the two of you sit in, the baby pink fading from the sky as Tyler pulls himself from the RV. When she sees Tyler, she quietly excuses herself and brushes past him, floating back into the RV.
“You oughta get that screen fixed.” Tyler comments, sitting down next to you.
“Haven’t had time.” You say with a shrug as you glance at the screen on your phone. It was more shattered than it was cracked, a hazard really, but what could you do?
“I’ll take you to a place in town today that’ll replace it for cheap.” Tyler says around a bite. “Can I get you anything to eat?”
Tyler’s team appears over the next hour, and he introduces them as they do. Dexter appears from the RV first and then Dani and Lilly from the back of the van. Boone gets dragged out from the van by Lilly twenty minutes later, and Boone pulls Javi from his tent because “if I have to be awake so do you Miami.”
Kate doesn’t leave the RV for the rest of the morning.
-
“They don’t like me.” You say quietly, drumming your fingers on the car door as Tyler drives to the motel that evening.
“They barely know you-“
“Cut the shit Tyler, I heard Kate last night.” You say sharply, sending him a cold glare. “They don’t want me here.” You roll out your shoulders, looking back out the window. “If you want me to go back, it’s okay.”
“And send you back to god knows what?”
“I’d be fine.”
“Kid, you sounded so damn terrified on that phone — I’m not inclined to turn around and give you back to that fear.”
You swallow around a sigh, feeling Tyler watch you as he drives.
“Give me a week. Give me a week to make it work. And if you still feel like you need to go back, hell, I’ll pay for your flight.”
You look at Tyler, noting the serious look in his eyes.
“Okay. One week.”
-
The next week feels simultaneously long and short in the worst ways.
Short, in that it feels like your time is running out.
Long, in that there are no storms to chase, dissipating before the team ever has a chance.
Long, in that you sit around most days, doing your own research on grants and sponsors and the backgrounds of potential investors and articles on social media growth.
Long, in that you don’t really talk to any of them, except for the one time you look over at Javi’s computer, just to tell him that his sentence didn’t make any sense.
Long in that, Kate refuses to be anywhere near you and Boone ignores you and Lilly shuts you out of conversation and Javi sort of looks at you like you’re some sort of alien placed down next to them.
It’s only on the sixth day, when you’re collecting everything you’ve worked on all week to give to Tyler in the morning before he takes you back, that something happens.
The storm is too far away for them to chase it, to get any research done, but Tyler and Lilly agree that the team should head in, to be there to help out and hand out food in the aftermath.
Because, apparently, that’s what this team is known for.
You feel awkward here, watching the team spring into action. You feel out of place, not knowing what you were supposed to say or do as these people dug through the rubble of their lives.
You were supposed to help people. Tyler had said you could help people here.
The team is distracted just enough, that it’s you who catches it, not them.
The sounds of a cry, somebody softly shushing them. You round a corner, heart breaking at the sight.
There, a small little boy, maybe around the age of 8, is holding who seems to be his little sister as she cries.
The poor girl can’t be any older than 3 or 4.
“I want Mom.” She blubbers out and the boy shushes her.
“I know, sissy, we just gotta-“ The boy looks around helplessly.
“Hey.” You call out, stepping around the rubble. “Hey, do you need help?”
The boy nods. “Mom said not to move but-“
You hold your hands out. “Stay where you are, okay? I’ll come get you and your sister alright?”
The boy nods, clinging to his sister’s hand. You make your way through the rubble, kicking things out of the way to make a path back before finally reaching the two kids. You kneel down best as you can, leveling yourself to them as you introduce yourself.
“I’m here to help. Can you tell me your name?”
“I’m Jack.” The boy says. “This is Bella. She’s bleeding and I can’t find my Mom-“
“Hey, hey.” You soothe. “We’ll get you guys some help and get you out of here, okay? We’ll find your Mom.” You look at Bella. “Bella? Are you okay if I carry you? I’m going to help you find someone to patch that cut up, okay?” Bella nods and Jack lets her go as you scoop her up. You hold out your hand for Jack as the two of you navigate your way out.
As you weave your way through people, you ask Jack soft questions about himself, where he goes to school, if he likes dinosaurs or trucks, distracting him as he talks to you. Once you get the two kids to the EMTs, you duck around the side, in search of someone from your team.
“Kate.” You call, as she’s sifting through rubble, calling for a dog. She glances over at you. “Hey, I’ve got two little kids here who can’t find their Mom. I’m gonna stay with them but can you let the team know? Just in case anyone sees her.”
The face Kate makes is difficult to read as she nods. You sigh, making your way back around the truck.
Bella’s all patched up and Jack is studying the logo on your shirt, lighting up when he recognizes it.
“Mom lets me watch their YouTube channel sometimes!”
You scoop Bella back up in your arms, holding a hand out for Jack to jump down as you do.
“Oh well then I’m guessing you don’t want to come see the tornado-proof truck?”
-
It’s late in the day when Bella and Jack’s Mom comes running down the street, hysterical. Tyler and Kate aren’t far behind her.
Her arm is in a sling and there’s a few bumps and bruises on her, but otherwise she’s fine. Both of the kids light up at the sight of their Mom, and she’s tearful, thanking you over and over for helping them, for watching over her babies.
You wave her off, citing babysitting as just another thing you’re used to, a big family and all that.
It’s as they’re walking away, Dexter asking if you want any food, Jack shouts out.
They turn back, Bella running back to you with the stuffed animal she’d been holding in hand. You kneel down as she holds it out for you to take, heart aching as you look at the stuffed pig.
Bella had seen it atop your stuff when you’d taken them in the RV and had been holding it ever since.
It was one of the few things you had of your life left behind but you know when it’s time to let something go.
“You keep it okay?” You say softly. “You take care of yourself little Bella?” She wraps her arms around your neck, the stuffie clutched between her little fingers. You return the hug, exhaling as you do. Bella lets you go, returning to her Mom and her brother and you stand back up, wiping at your eyes with the back of your hand.
“Do you want some food? You’ve been with those kids all day.” Dani says softly, holding the box.
“How’d you find Mom?” You ask quietly, crossing your arms.
Tyler sighs. “Was sitting with her the whole afternoon when Kate came down the street, hearing her talk about her missing kids. Kate connected the dots.”
Your arms wrap around yourself tighter. “Kate, I told you I was with those kids. I told you to tell the team in case anybody found Mom.”
Kate opens her mouth but no words come out as Lilly’s eyes slide between the two of you.
“Here.” Lilly says gently as she holds the box out, taking it from Dani. “You should eat. Been a long day.”
“I’m not hungry.” You say. “I’m gonna get in the truck, let me know when we’re leaving.”
-
You sling your backpack over your shoulder, the truck door shutting behind you as you walk up the motel steps.
The backpack, downsized from your duffel bag as Tyler had gone through the Oklahoma necessities with you, which was hardly anything you owned, feels heavy as you do.
“Hey.” Kate’s voice calls out. “That was a really nice thing you did for that little girl.”
Tears sting at your eyes as you push the key into the lock, pressing against the door with your body weight to get the door to unstick.
You think Tyler says something as you shut the door but under the hot water of the shower rushing down you, you can’t hear anything else.
-
You clear your throat, announcing your presence as you do. Tyler and Kate pause in their conversation as they look over to you.
You set the folder down in front of Tyler, Javi’s pullover in front of Kate.
“Just wanted to give these to you. Tyler, do you want me to just wait in the truck?”
Tyler peeks at the folder as Kate asks “Wait for what?”
“What is all of this?” Tyler asks, flipping through the pages.
“Research on potential investors and their backgrounds. Just so you guys don’t get into another StormPar situation. There’s some stuff about grants, donors in there. Other stuff I tracked down about how you could grow your social media, ideas I had. There might be a couple of pages about laws on people donating, not sure. It’s everything I’ve done this week. Y’all don’t have to use it but I just thought it might be helpful as lead points.”
“This is- this is really great stuff.” Tyler remarks. “It’s gonna be a real loss to not have your brain on our team.”
“Wait - are you leaving?” Kate asks, eyes flying between you and Tyler.
“I’ll meet you at the truck.” You say, turning to leave. You think you hear Kate repeat the question to Tyler, but you shut the door to the RV before you can hear their conversation further. Across the parking lot, Javi calls out, but you wave him off as you climb into the passenger seat of Tyler’s truck.
Your heart feels heavy as you look at your own Javy’s contact.
It would be so easy to pick up the phone, to tell him you made a mistake, to beg him to let you come home.
He would too, and he would pick you up from the airport, and he’d wash the Oklahoma from your skin, and he’d hold you through the loss.
But then you remember Jake’s defeated look as the two of you had assessed the damage, the way he’d asked you to lie.
You remember the blood-
A startled gasp leaves you as someone knocks on the window.
It’s Kate.
You roll down the window.
“You’re leaving?”
You eye her, unsure why she appears to be almost nervous, fingernails digging into the soft flesh of her arms.
“Yeah?”
“Why?”
You shrug, surveying the team in the parking lot. “It just didn’t work out. I didn’t fit here.”
“But-“ She worries her bottom lip. “Where will you go?”
“I’ll figure it out.” You say simply.
You’d have to because you knew the alternative would be devastating to everyone you’d ever known.
She sighs, eyes flickering to Tyler, who’s moving closer. “Well, we’re headed to my Mom’s tonight. You should stay one more night. You’ve never even had real Oklahoma barbecue.”
A dry laugh escapes you without your permission. “Kate, what are you playing at here?”
She seems shocked, not expecting your question. “What do you mean?”
You roll your eyes, huffing. “Kate, c’mon, you told Tyler you didn’t want me here.”
Her face drops as her arms fall by her sides. “You heard that?” She says quietly.
“Yeah.”
She licks her lips. “Look, I ain’t good with new people. I’m- It’s a me thing.” She looks down, scuffing her boot on the ground. “It’s my problem and I misjudged you. I’m sorry. Give me another night to show you how it could be.”
“Why the hell would I stay to see how it could be when I know at this moment I’m not wanted here?”
“I do.” She says softly. “Want you here. I was wrong and I’m sorry.”
You let out breath through your nose, meeting Tyler’s eyes through the windshield.
You think of Dexter’s food, Javi’s pullover, Dani and Lilly’s gentle insistence you feed yourself last night.
You think of the Louisiana area code sitting open on your phone right now.
“One night, Kate.”
-
“I sure am sorry you’ll have to sleep on the floor. I just wasn’t expecting an extra person from the crew but we can make sure you have somewhere to sleep tomorrow night-“
You cut her off, holding your hands out for the dishes from dinner. “That’s very kind of you Ms. Cooper, but I’m just fine sleeping on the floor.”
“Please, I keep telling you to just call me Cathy and, well, you could stay in Kate’s bed?” Cathy offers as you take the plates from her.
“Think you’d find my throat slit tomorrow.” You mutter and Tyler barks out a laugh.
“You deserved that one Kate.”
Cathy turns to her daughter, a look on her face. “What did you do?”
Kate pulls a face, holding her hands out. “What- Nothing, Mom!”
Cathy hums, eyebrows furrowing but you cut them off. “The floor is just fine, Ms. Cooper. Um, do you mind pointing me in the direction of the bathroom so I could change?”
-
“Do Tyler and Kate have a thing?” You ask, taking a sip of the hot chocolate Lilly had made as Javi chuckles next to you.
You’re watching the group fight over Uno, you and Javi sat in front of a puzzle.
“They did at one point. When they first met, but they burned out pretty fast. Figured out they were better off as friends.” You hum and Javi’s grin grows. “Why, you thinking you want to start something up with Owens?”
You blanch and shake your head. “No, I think I’ve more than had my fill on macho thrill seekers for this lifetime.”
Javi lets out a laugh, a real one, for the first time all week. You smile, thinking of how Tyler would fit in with those pilots like he’d always belonged there.
You were all set on those types.
Kate though…
If Kate hadn’t been so cold to you, Kate would’ve been the type of girl you could see yourself falling for.
Witty, bright, a soft smile always worn on her face. She’s at ease here and it makes your heart hurt to see. You want to someday be as at ease as she looks, wedged in between Boone and Dexter, the brightest smile you’ve seen from her on her face.
“So how the hell does a city girl like you find herself in Oklahoma?”
You slide a puzzle piece into place. “I don’t, I don’t really want to talk about it, if that’s okay.”
Javi sighs, quiet for a minute. “Look, I’m sorry we were so off-putting when you first got here. We’re a tight knit group and we’ve been through a lot together. And-“
“Javi.” You cut him off with a tight smile. “You don’t have to explain. I get it, okay? You guys aren't the first group to not want me around and you won’t be the last, alright?”
He heaves a breath, an unreadable look on his face. “Just- if anyone might understand the things you’re running from, it would be us.”
“Who says I’m running?”
Javi raises an eyebrow and you sigh, setting the pieces you’re sorting through down.
“Look, I’m not running. I’m just- I’m just trying to leave something behind.”
Javi studies you for a few minutes as you set back to work on the puzzle.
“Shame you and Kate can’t get along. You two are more alike than you think.”
-
You awake with a start, fingers clenching in unfamiliar fabric.
“Are you okay?” Someone asks softly and you blink, Kate coming into focus.
Right, you had- you had slept next to her last night after she’d worn you down. You couldn’t deny how nice it had sounded to sleep in a real bed.
“Fine.” You breathe, willing yourself to forget the shouts of a friend left behind.
She frowns as she pulls her pants on. “I’m, uh, sorry for waking you up. Gotta help Mom with the cows.”
You wave a hand, pulling yourself to sit up in the bed. “Want a hand?”
“Mom would kill me if I let a guest help. Why don’t you get some more sleep, okay?”
You lay back down as she quietly ducks out of the room, but you know sleep won’t come.
You’re restless so you pull yourself from the bed, padding down the staircase and sitting in one of the chairs on the porch. Tyler appears a minute later, an extra coffee mug in hand. You take it from him with a quiet thank you before the two of you start to watch Kate.
“So California, are we gonna talk about it?” Tyler asks.
You sigh as Tyler kicks his feet out. “Well, you’re gonna ask me questions I don’t want to answer and I’m gonna ask you ones you don’t want to answer, so unless you want to start copping to some things…”
Tyler shakes his head. “Won’t talk about it then, California.”
You eye him. “I’d prefer it if you didn’t call me that. Sort of hard to leave that life behind when you keep calling me that.”
“You gonna stay?” Tyler asks, looking over at you.
You shrug, finger running over the rim of the mug. “I don’t know that I should.”
“I know it’s been a rough start with them.” Tyler sighs, shoulders hiked up. “But they’re good people.”
“I don’t doubt that.”
“You’re good people too.”
“Doesn’t make me a good fit here.”
Tyler sighs. “It’s my fault, I should’ve approached it a different way. But if you leave, we’d really be missing out. You’ve got those fancy degrees and you’re smart and you’re one fucking selfless girl. We could use someone like you around.”
Kate and her Mom appear, Kate’s bright smile appearing as she pulls herself onto the railing of the porch.
“You guys hungry? I’m gonna go get started on breakfast.”
“Starved.”
“Wanna come see the barn?” Kate asks you as her Mom opens the screen door.
“Now hang on, California ain’t said if she’s staying. No reason to show her the barn if she’s gonna be leaving.”
You sigh, look down at the mug you can feel going cold. You rub your thumb over the Oklahoma written into the side as you think of Kate’s smile, of Tyler’s kindness, of Dexter’s food, of Javi’s pullover that had somehow ended back up in your bag after giving it back to Tyler and Kate yesterday.
You blink, looking back up at them. “Okay. Yeah, okay, I’ll stay."

Tim Drake's I.E.F Chap 5
[Previous chap][Ao3 chap][Masterlist][next chap]
Mmmmm this is probably gonna be the last chapter I link to Tumblr tonight. It's like, 2am? Yea I deserve some sleep. I'll hopefully get some more out tmrr. But who knows? Certainly not me.
Also. I have never pulled a prank on my sib and this chapter displays that fully.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Looking over the plans on his laptop, Tim can't help but smile. It may be slightly maniacal, but with the plans he has, he couldn't help it.
Only a day has passed since Jason came to check on Tim, and since then he's been putting together a series of plans for his siblings. We're they good plans? No, not at all.
Tim, with the ready help of his new friend that could go both invisible and intangible had prepared a set of pranks specifically for each family member -minus Bruce and Alfred- in order of who needs it most. A few times while writing in the document he titled 'the shit list' he could hear his friend giggling from over his shoulder, the soft reverb sending chills down his spine that had nothing to do with the familiar cold his friend gave off. It was distracting, but it showed that Tim had gotten a bit closer with Arcturus, even if just a little bit.
"Alright," he nodded, giving the list one last look over before turning to where he could feel the epicentre of the cold.
"I have one last thing that'll make this perfect." Tim turned to rummage in his bedside table, absently noting the lack of strain such a movement had on his wounds. His hand brushed what he was looking for, and he pulled it out to show to Arct, laying the object on the palm of his hand. A compact surveillance camera sat neatly on his palm, perfect for watching the chaos unfold from the safety of his hospital bed in the medbay while his friend enacted righteous vengeance.
Arcturus must have grabbed the camera because it floated off his palm over to the bedside chair, turning every so often for his friend to get a better view of the device.
"Cool isn't it? We use these to keep tabs on some of the regular rogue hideouts, and sometimes infiltrations if we need a wire." Tapping a few things on his keyboard he brought up the camera's feed. A grainy image appeared, jumping and lagging every few seconds. Odd, this was supposed to be a newer model, there shouldn't be any interference with the signal, especially this close to the cam itself.
To his left Arct made a trill that sounded like clinking icicles and a feeling of understanding that wasn't his own washed over Tim. Frowning and looking over he watched his friend bring up the camera to what Tim thought would be about chest level, and just to its left sparked to life a green flame.
No, that wasn't quite right, the green pulsed and warbled, but it stayed mostly circular, not pointed like a candle's flame. The light moved closer to the camera and Tim could just make out the silhouette of his friend's pointed claw before it made contact. Touching the light to the camera seemed to affect it somehow, as he watched the camera absorb the light fully, glowing slightly before that too faded into the device.
Tim wondered just what Arct had done to the device until the laptop in front of him notified him with a ding!
'New power source detected, convert?' He'd never seen that pop-up before. Cautiously glancing back over to the chair, he clicked the 'accept' button and watched as the program closed, then opened back up a second later. The camera feed now had a slight green tint to it, but the glitching and static had stopped. 'Whatever Arct had done to the camera probably counteracted the interference his aura gave off,' Tim figured.
He turned to his friend to give his thanks, but the words died on his lips as he watched the small figure of the camera flicker and disappear. Trying to find them was useless, his friend could obscure the cold feeling he gave off when he wanted, even Tim couldn't find him. Tim turned back to the footage on his laptop only to get jumpscared by a closeup of his own face.
A ghostly giggle echoed in front of him as Tim groaned. Arcturus really did fit perfectly in this family if he was already scaring him like that for no reason.
"Okay, okay, enough playing around. Ready to start a war?" He grinned, sharp and feral. He could only imagine Arct was doing the same as the camera came back into view to bob up and down rapidly.
Oh, this was going to be fun.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Danny first tracks down Stephanie in the library. The blond Danny's come to know as Spoiler is lounging on one of the many couches in the large room with a book in hand and a glass of water on the small table next to her. Too focused on her book, she reaches over to get her drink without looking. She frowns, she knew she put her glass close by, but she can't find it by touch alone.
Frowning, she finally tears her gaze from her book to the end table beside her, only to find her water, sitting innocently where she had left it. Taking and inspecting it reveals nothing out of place with the glass or the table. Stephanie says nothing as she looks out to the rows of bookshelves, then behind her and the couch, trying to find anyone to place blame, but she was alone. Or so she thought.
Turning back, she shrugs to herself and tips the glass to take a sip, only to yelp as a large ice cube slid out of the cup and onto her nose. She jumps back in her seat, startled, at the solid chunk of what used to be her drinking water now sitting in her lap. Hesitantly, she pokes at it, expecting it to seemingly explode. Once, twice, three times all come up with something cold but solid. The fourth time her nail lightly grazes the side and suddenly she's drenched from the waist down in room temperature water.
She rushes to her feet, pants soaked and dripping onto the carpet. Again, she looks around for anyone in the room, even glaring at the high tops of the bookshelves, expecting one of her family members to jump out and tell her she just got pranked. But again, she's alone in the library. Danny lets a breathy chuckle escape him as he watches Stephanie glare accusingly at nothing, then her soiled pants, and finally storming out of the library, book now forgotten. He makes sure the book is left on another couch in case she comes back. Then floats off to find his next target.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Damian is in his room working on that day's portion of homework when he feels a presence. An all too familiar presence that reminds him of a time before he lived in the manor.
A dangerous presence.
He spins around in his chair, previously concealed dagger now in hand. The room hasn't changed, his weapons are still perched in their displays on his wall, the curtains sway lightly in the mid afternoon breeze. Paranoia runs through him like electricity as he crosses the room to close the window, certain of what he felt. Pit demons could not be seen by normal men, they were monsters spawned by the Lazarus pits to bring chaos and madness for all those trying to use their powers. If there were a pit demon in the manor, they would all be dead before long.
Moving back to his desk in slow movements, Damian tried to pick up on that familiar feeling. The feeling of unchecked desire and death. He found an empty room.
This did not comfort him.
Damian took another dagger out of its hiding place just as he heard the door handle rattle. Tearing the door almost off its hinges he raced after that presence through the house, down corridors and ballrooms, stairways and secret passageways. The presence finally stopped in the main foyer. Damian scanned the entrance room with daggers drawn, trying to sense where the thing had disappeared to.
Just as the tension started to leave his shoulders with the thought of 'needing more sleep, lest he end up like Drake' a snowflake landed on his nose. He looked up just in time to see a mound of snow fall on him in a whump! leaving only his head and neck exposed. With his body restrained, Damian could do nothing as the pit demon's presence glides back up the main staircase and disappears down a corridor, static hissing conveying its glee in its wake.
-
Damian returns to his room cold and damp, a blanket on his shoulders and mug of warm cardamom milk in his hand. Swinging the door open Damian is outraged to see all his weapons, hidden ones included, painted and arranged on his floor in the forms of several different flowers. He growls and glowers at nothing.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tim made sure to save Duke for last, as his powers might give Arct some trouble. Danny doesn't know exactly why a guy like Duke is on 'the shit list' but doesn't question it if it means getting to prank someone.
The meta is currently using the training space in the cave to practice grapples and throws in a simulation.
A cold chill runs up his spine and he blocks a punch. Duke knows no one besides Tim is in the cave, and he shouldn't be up and running around yet, so otherwise Duke is alone. The simulation ends, Duke bent over with hands on his knees as he tries to steady his breathing. Something passes behind him, cold and charged, like a broken power line in the middle of winter. He glanced behind him, breathing having levelled out some, but sees nothing. Looking over his other shoulder provides similar results.
Suspicious, Duke calls out to the empty room.
"Hello?" His voice echoes in the silence of the cavernous room. Something else replies, a cold haunting whisper of a laugh. It has no source that he could see, bouncing off the stone walls and seemingly coming from every direction. The black and white streak from the corner of his vision is the final straw, he needs to nope the heck out of here.
Taking quick strides out of the training room, he only makes it past the threshold when something grabs his ankle. He tries to jerk away but the thing's grip is strong, keeping him bound to that spot on the floor even as he's leaning back with his full weight. It's grip on his ankle loosens ever so slightly after a moment, and Duke hopes he's able to get away with that smidge more wiggle room.
His heart plummets as a sensation radiates out from the grip, cold like spearmint and chilled water. It envelops him, and for a second Duke feels weightless.
Then, the thing pulls.
Duke is pulled through the floor, scream caught in his throat as stone and dirt pass through him and the unseen being. He tries to see what has him, but this darkness doesn't respond as it would normally. His X-ray vision doesn't help either, as it just shows him more earth and the sewers below Gotham.
A sinking feeling slips into the pit of his stomach as he wonders if he'll be left down here, were the thing that has him let go. That thought was jerked away with him as the being dragged him up up up and breaches land. It was all he could do to not cry from relief at seeing the late Gotham sky when gravity reasserted itself and the pressure on his ankle vanished. He dropped face first into the grass.
"Owww…" Duke groans. Laying there seems like the better option as he tries to get his heart rate under control for a different reason than before. Rolling over takes more energy than he'd like, but it's worth it if it means he's not inhaling grass. Cracking one eye open he does not expect to see a shadowy figure leaning over him, it's green eyes peering at him, inspecting him like a specimen. He lays as still as he can, not wanting to breathe as this creature's eyes wash over him like a tiger watching an antelope.
The things eyes travel up to his face, and a cheshire grin manifests itself in the roiling black of its face, stark white in contrast and with too many teeth. 'Ah, I'm going to die' was all Duke could think before the thing lunges. Screwing his eyes shut might have been the last thing he ever does…
A few minutes pass and nothing happens. No pain or cold could be felt anywhere on his body, so he cautiously cracks an eye open. Blue sky overhead, trees and the manor in the distance, but no sight of the black thing that literally dragged him here. Duke sits up slowly, turning his head to try and see the thing.
It's gone.
He could almost think it was a dream if he didn't have to walk all the way back to the manor in his workout gear.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The prank war—more of a slaughter really—went on for the next two days. At random hours strange things will go on around the three siblings still in the manor, things disappearing and reappearing in other locations, water turning to ice when they blink and back again, strange noises or cold spots in empty rooms. It all leads up to dinner.
Tim had been given the okay from Alfred to exit medbay and eat solid food. Alfred had marvelled at Tim's speedy recovery—no one heals from a bullet to the lung in a week and a half—but made sure to drill into him that he wouldn't be doing any strenuous work, during the day or night.
Tim was okay with that, he thought as he sat down and watched as the others set the table around him. The three targets were haggard and paranoid, jumping at shadows (in Duke's case literally.) Arcturus was around somewhere close, he had hidden his presence as Tim hobbled up the stairs with Alfred's help, and Tim wondered if he'd be able to get away with anymore pranking today.
With the table set, the three sat across from Tim, stiff and uncomfortable. Tonight's dinner would be soup, mainly because Tim still had to recover, but there was a side of steamed vegetables and buttered bread to be dipped if preferred.
They sat in tense silence, Bruce late again, as always. Smirking, Tim tried to make conversation with his three siblings.
"So, anything interesting happen around here while I was rotting in bed?"
Damian scowled and glanced to his left, towards Bruce's chair. Duke paled by at least two shades, and Stephanie's eye twitched.
"Nothing happened Timmy, we're all just peachy." Steph ground out. Man she was really on her last straw.
Good.
He watched absently as a piece of steamed broccoli dropped into the plate. 'So Arct was hiding under the table' he thought as he tried making more small talk with his siblings.
"Y'know I've been hearing some strange things down in the cave, I'm almost starting to believe it's haunted." He says with a chuckle. Not like he was wrong.
The elbow to the shin both confirms where Arct is and tells him maybe that joke was in bad taste if the ghost doesn't want to be noticed.
Damian's glare told him he didn't miss the minute flinch he gave at that. Neither did Duke apparently, as his brow furrows. Damn detective training. Luckily Steph is still trying to burn a hole through her bowl with her eyes like Superman.
After that they eat in silence. The sound of clinking cutlery and shuffling in seats fills the room. At one point Duke seems to notice Tim's disappearing veggies, despite Tim not eating them. He drops his spoon, and it clatters off the table with a sound that could have been a gunshot in the quiet dining room.
"Ope, sorry,'' he mutters sheepishly as he scoots his chair back enough to bend down and get it.
As he's bent over, Duke looks over to Tim's side of the table. He nearly jumps out of his skin as he watches the thing, just sitting against his brother's legs, pulling a carrot through the table and putting it in its mouth. He must've made a noise or something, because the thing snaps to look at him with those toxic green eyes. A black appendage lifts for it to wave at him, that Cheshire grin curling out of its face with too many teeth.
Duke jumps back, hitting his head on the underside of the table and falling out of his seat. He scrambles out from under the table to see his three siblings staring at him. Pointing a shaking hand at the thing at Tim's feet he croaked, his voice cracking in fear.
"Something-" He swallowed, mouth suddenly dry, "-Something's under the table."
Damian shoots to his feet, newly revealed dagger in hand. Stephanie bolts up too, backing away slowly from the table like it might eat her if she moves too quickly.
Yeah, Tim might have just screwed up.
The frosty sensation pressing against his leg vanishes and he could see Duke gaping at him from the floor. Right, Intangibly, Arcturus probably went through the floor and is gonna hide out in the cave for a while until dinner is over. Tim inwardly let out a sigh of relief. Time to cover his ass.
"What's wrong Duke? Saw a spider or something?" Tim grins down at the other boy from his seat.
"What? No! I saw this, this thing! It was this smokey black thing with green eyes and way too many teeth!" Duke is still pointing at his legs under the table, like Arct will just come back for funsies.
Tim absently wondered if that's what Jason saw, looking at Arcturus. He never gave a description of his friend, even though he came back a few days later. Though he did get pranked by them. They got found out pretty quickly and started talking about other ways to mess with the family after that.
"Tt, so you can see the pit demon then, unsurprising." Damian scowled in Tim's direction, was he taking his anger out on Tim like that? Maybe.
"Wait, hold on-" Steph points at Damian. "-You know what this thing is? And you haven't told us?" She accused.
"I had it under control, it did not seem important as it had not yet tried to harm anyone as of yet." Damian retorted.
"Harm anyone? That thing is violent?!"
"Normally, those of its species are, yes."
Their shouting soon devolved into bickering, their feelings of suspicion and paranoia finally being released in the form of a shouting match as Duke remained frozen on the floor staring at Tim from under the table.
Tim propped his chin on his fist, elbow on the table as the show went on. Honestly this could use some popcorn.
Just as he was getting comfortable Duke squinted at him.
"You knew about that thing, didn't you?" The suspicion was palpable in his voice.
"Knew about what?" He asked innocently.
"The thing! It was up against your legs, you would either have noticed it and tried to get away or you already knew about it!"
Oh, shit. The other two had died down in their shouting match to look at him now. Not good.
Tim tries deflecting, "Duke, I've been tired and sore for a week and a half, you really think I'd be noticing if my legs felt a little chilly?"
The arguing turned into a four-way match. He tried valiantly to deny all accusations thrown at him, but he was up against three other bat-trained detectives, he was bound to let something slip.
"Are you telling us," Damian ground out, "that you just let a dangerous supernatural creature follow you to the manor? Not only are you an imbecile, but you are suicidal as well."
"I didn't let it follow me, I was unconscious. Dick let it follow him." He countered, full face in his hands. This really did not turn out the way he wanted it to.
"And so, what? You just decided 'well they didn't believe me about this, so let's get back at them a little?'" Stephanie had stopped shouting, but the anger was still hot in her voice.
"Basically," he shrugged.
The three across from Tim were about to start berating him, again, when Bruce finally showed up. He looked at the three angry teenagers on one side of the table, then Tim trying to disappear into the chair cushions on the other.
"Did I miss something?" He asked.
His siblings wanted to regale Bruce with his stupidity, but Tim cut them off before they could start.
"They were just telling me how stupid it was of me to try and have coffee with dinner so soon into my recovery." He lied.
Bruce shot a stern look at Tim as he sat down. "And they're right, you're barely out of medbay Tim, coffee won't do you any good right now."
Tim gave a noncommittal hum at that.
The dinner moved quickly after that. Glares were not so subtly shot his way and he no longer felt the same joy he did at the beginning. He decided to cut his losses and retire to his room early.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
'This did not go how I thought it would,' Tim thought as he not so gently shut his door and flopped onto his bed. At least he could hole himself up in his room now, so that's a positive.
A cold presence nears his right and gives a small hum, the noise conveyed concern and regret. Arct felt sorry for leaving him? It was his own fault he got himself into that mess. He turned his head from where it was smashed into the mattress to look at where his friend sat, the bed dipping slightly at the invisible weight.
"Not your fault," Tim mumbled through the sheets. "I thought of the pranks, you just did them for me. You still don't trust me enough to even show yourself, and I put you in a dangerous spot for some fun."
He glumly turned his head back into the sheets. He knew his friend didn't trust the bats, he knew Damian knew about pit demons from Jason, yet he still thought using his friend and possibly outing him to his family was a good idea. Stupid, stupid! Tim let out an anguished groan, wallowing and repeating depressing thoughts like a mantra in his head.
All thoughts screeched to a halt when something ran over his scalp. He looked up, expecting not to see anything but instead found a floating white glove carding its fingers soothingly through his hair. Tim felt his eyes flutter as he practically melted into the mattress, his previous thought spiral completely forgotten.
A Trilling chirp sounding of a connecting audio jack moved a question through the air, one simple enough Tim could decipher clearly; better? Leaning into his friend's touch he breathed a sigh of relief.
"Yeah," he breathed. "Thanks for helping me get out of my head. Sorry I had to tell them some things about you, Dami will probably try and stick around me now to make sure you aren't going to hurt anyone."
The fingers continued their paths through his hair as a trill of understanding filled him. Man, he'd made a great friend.
They continued like that in silence for a while, a floating white glove carding through Tim's hair, and Tim condensing into a puddle on the sheets from the comforting ministrations.
At Tim's yawn, the fingers stopped. Tim groaned at the loss. He looked hazily to his friend, silently urging him to continue. His friend responded with a cold wind rustling branches, the meaning of rest drew another groan from the puddle of teen. Ever so slowly he got up to go to the bathroom and get ready for bed, swaying slightly on his feet occasionally. Arcturus was still there when he got back, with clean pyjamas and a washed face. Tim crawled back into bead and was delighted when the fingers returned to his hair, accompanied by the purr he'd heard on the first night he'd met Arcturus, promising safety and sleep. The petting didn't stop until soft snores could be heard in the dark bedroom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Danny was feeling hungry. His stomach had been roaring since he smelled dinner and it only got worse since stealing the veggies off Tim's plate. Maybe not attending to his human needs for a week and a half wasn't the greatest idea in retrospect, but the need for safety came first. He was currently in a house filled with highly trained and suspicious heroes and hero adjacents, he needed to be more than careful here, or he'd get caught by someone less friendly than Tim and Jason.
Still, he was hungry, and he probably needed a shower. After making sure all the vigilantes' returned from their patrols and tucked themselves safely in their beds, Danny used one of the furthest of the many spare bedroom ensuites (seriously how many rooms does this mansion have?) to scrub all his built up grime away. Not that he sweat or got dirty in ghost form, really, he just phases all the dirt off him, but nothing felt better after a week of stress than a shower.
It was heavenly.
Phasing the water off while in the tub would save the suspicion of a damp towel in an unused bedroom. He got dressed in his most recently washed clothes, thanking his past self for going to the laundromat before all this went down as he stuck his stuff back in the wall.
Danny crept down the winding halls of the manor towards the kitchen, remembering each turn from when he'd explore invisibly while Tim was asleep. Adding a little ghost power aided his steps to be deathly silent.
The kitchen was dark, not that it bothered Danny, as he made a B-line for the fridge. Opening it revealed a treasure trove of ingredients, fruits and veggies, meats and cheese, truly a fridge fit to serve five to twenty people at a time.
He grabbed a carrot and shoved it in his mouth, satisfied he had that to munch on. Danny started cherry picking other snacks, trying to make sure he could get somewhat of a balanced meal out of his pilfering.
The slight rustling of fabric made him stiffen, then a voice behind him had his core sink to his stomach.
"Master Jason, I do believe I have told you to send an advanced notice before you decide to come for a late-night snack," Alfred scolded the large silhouetted form.
Shit.
Shit shit shit shit shit.
Danny didn't move from his hunched position, unsure of what to do. He couldn't lie to the butler, he knew Jason much better than Danny did and would be able to smell the lie as soon as he turned around. Running wouldn't help either, Alfred had seen him. In human form. He'd tell Bruce as soon as he could. 'A mysterious man had bypassed all the detection alarms and raided the fridge early this morning' would send the bat on a search of the manor, top to bottom.
"Master Jason? Are you alright?"
Ah, he'd stayed quiet too long, shit.
The rustling of cloth came closer and in a panic Danny went invisible. A sharp inhale was the only indication of Alfred's surprise, and turning showed the man searching the room with eyebrows raised. Slowly the butler walked to the fridge, taking graceful, sturdy steps as he glided across the kitchen, expecting an attack. As he grabbed the handle of the open fridge door Danny turned intangible to let the door pass through him.
Alfred jerked his hand back as it went through Danny's chest, feeling as though he'd just stuck it in a bucket of dry ice. He'd tried to find the cold spot again, but by then Danny had already flown through the ceiling to Tim's room, the food in his arms forgotten.
Dropping his snacks to the floor as he made it to the correct bedroom Danny rushed to the sleeping form before him and shook him.
"Tim, Tim wake up!" He whisper-shouted, not caring if he was speaking English instead of ghost speak. "Tim, I need your help!"
Tim rolled over, groggy and half asleep.
"Whazzap?" He slurred before yawning.
"Your butler saw me."
"What?"
Girlboss-ed
Author's note 📝: gaslight gatekeep girlboss!!! Based from this request♡
Warnings ⚠️: Kidnapping! Philosophy questions that'll maybe make you think, curse words, violence and more!
(Angry/Souya, Mikey and Ran)
Angry :
❥ Guess who’s sh*tting up a storm trying to find you? Smiley and the others had to continuously glance at the blue-haired boy to check on him. Surely a crying blue ogre wasn’t what they needed right now.
❥ But who was going to stop him if he cries though? Certainly not Mikey who was the source of bad ideas. And certainly not Draken who was too busy brainstorming with Mitsuya on who abducted you.
❥ “If nobody finds y/n or if nobody even gives a clue on where she might be...I don’t know if I can hold myself back...nii-chan” Angry’s state was questionable really. He looked calm, sitting down with his interlocked hands covering the lower part of his face. But at the same time his eyes are saying he was 1 second away from blowing up.
❥ Smiley didn’t know what to do. First, his little brother was on the edge of crying and losing control and the Second, you were still missing. He didn’t know how to comfort Angry and he didn’t have a clue on where you were either.
❥ Nahoya Kawata stood there dumbfounded, He desperately wished for good news because he was absolutely sure, both of them would lose their marbles. Just one...just one word “Smiley!!! We got someone!” Well, it looks like his prayers were answered.
❥ Meanwhile, on your side. “I’m just saying…” You watched as some of the men in front of you ran around in absolute chaos. “STOP TALKING!” Oh...one finally cracked. You looked to your left where a man skidded his body against the wall. His eyes were bloodshot.
❥ “I’m alive haha...I’m real...I exist, I can feel pain!” He pounded and pinched himself, his pupil was shaking as he took rapid breaths. “But...That’s exactly what a simulation would want you to think.” His crazed eyes refocused on your figure who was leisurely sitting still. Unbothered by the chaos that was unfolding in front you.
❥ “I mean like...of they were smart enough to even create a simulation, what makes you think they wouldn’t perfect making us think we were real?” Those words honestly made everyone around you think deeply and crack. Some started running, some started bawling their eyes out while some just looked...dead.
❥ “no...no..n-” “Ah! Going by that logic, what rejects the idea that says that, that possibility or reality isn’t simulation?” You began to question, loudly in fact. Before you could continue, noises of all sorts were heard. It caused most of the men to flinch and for you to smile brightly.
❥ As if on command the entrance of the warehouse you were locked in was opened. “Souya~!!! You found me! That was not a fun hide and seek!” Even Angry himself had to take a double look around to make sure he was seeing things right. I mean, your partner was tied up and smiling, with her captors looking quite...disorganized.
❥ “W-what happened? Nevermind that, Are you ok!?” he rushed to where you were, untying and analyzing you for any injuries you may have sustained. “I’m fine! Better than yesterday actually!”
❥ How could you be so jolly at a time like this. “H-hey you can see me right?” A hand gripped Draken’s jacket, the tall man glanced unamusedly at the pitiful person who was practically on his knees. He sighed from stress ‘Reminder to never anger y/n ever again...don’t let Mikey near her too-’
❥ Once you were free, Angry spent no time in grabbing you, carrying you like how one would with a toddler as he rushed to where first aid can be found, but you still had unfinished business.
❥ “By the way! It doesn’t really matter! If one day our simulation's creators came down and took us out of the sim, we'd eventually ponder the same possibility.” You shouted after them, smiling in delight at the groans that came after. Angry glanced at you briefly before looking away.
❥ Whatever philosophical question or realization you've come up or heard of, leave him out of it.
Mikey :
❥ A match made in hell honestly, you got the mind and mouth to make others go bonkers, he got the fists to make others lose the ability to think.
❥ “Do you really have free will? Or does free will have you?” You asked the person in front of you, watching his face twist in confusion before he shook it. “As I was saying, We’ve got your girlfriend, come to the address I sent if you don’t wanna see me blow her brains out.”
❥ He closed the flip phone, ultimately ending the call before taking a look towards you who was busy looking up at him with wide clear doe-eyes and all. “Cause if you think about it...Money, you want money right?”
❥ The man squatted down, looks like he was hooked, perfect. “You desire it...Do you control your desires? No. If we’re not in control of our desires then what is?” The man thought for a bit before looking back at you. “All I’m hearing is in a way, I’m innocent and-”
❥ “oh-ho? Are you trying to say what you’re doing isn't bad because of said desires?” You smiled wryly as you questioned him, glancing at him in a way that looked like you were looking down on him, their 6 foot tall leader.
❥ “What? No-” “So you’re admitting it, you’re a bad person.” “I- I mean-” “Ah right? What really defines bad and good? Morals? Integrity? Sigh…”
❥ You glanced around as if in disappointment, but you could only do so much with the ropes bounding you on the chair. “Stop confusing me damn it, I’ll beat the hell out of you if you let another peep escape that pretty mouth of yours.”
❥ “Of course you will, somebody who think that way could even beat a disabled or an elderly person for money…” “That’s! That’s not it! Mikey ha-” You began to sniffle, confusing the hell out of the men inside the room. “Of course it’s not that! You’re being controlled by your desires aren’t you? It’s ok! You’re not a bad person!”
❥ The man looked around helpless and beginning to fall unawaringly under the hatchet of lunacy you were trying to create for him. The people around you also began to think about your words. “I- I’m not a good person per se! but-”
❥ “Are you trying to tell me that or are you convincing yourself?” Playing devil’s advocate, that role really suited you. Seeing as though the man in front of you began to look around for anybody to help him. Only to see his men whispering and screaming to each other. But not for the reason you may think, they were discussing what you were saying, but were too flustered to actually think straight.
❥ But then again, that wasn’t what he saw in his eyes anyways. The man began to take sharp breaths, Truly, your words could really make one think before you could say more a group of people came barging in.
❥ “Took them long enough” You scoffed, not seeing the way the people around became so alarmed that they began running away. Being in a vulnerable state with loud noises isn’t really desirable, you see.
❥ In a flash somebody had grabbed the chair you were bound to. “Next time you borrow money from a mafia-like group or something, make sure you know how to deal with it.” Your unimpressed gaze on your boyfriend who was working on your ropes made him let out a sheepish chuckle.
❥ “Sorry, princess. We owe you one” He said seriously but still kept a smile on his face. “Not just one….”
❥ “I’ll give you 3 free passes to cuddle, whole day with no interruptions.” “Deal.”
Ran :
❥ The way your captors looked at you with a grimy smile disgusted you. “You’re a pretty one, ain’t ya? Surely your boy toy wouldn’t mind if we damage the goods quite a bit…” Pause. Did he seriously refer to you as ‘goods’ ? How degrading.
❥ “Are you guys really faithfully following this trash?” You saw how the other’s smile faltered, the way their eyes showed hesitance once their leader spoke. ‘Hmm~’ you hid the amusement threatening to paint your face because of the idea that struck you.
❥ “Lady, if you know what’s good for you then shut up.” One of them began to speak, they say the eyes were the windows to one’s soul. The man’s eyes who spoke gave you a clear view of just what his actions said. “Tch I’d know better than you.” you retorted.
❥ “What’s that supposed to mean?” The leader’s voice was laced with malice and oozed danger. You saw how some of them took a step back before you directly, head on stared at the threat. “Seriously, Have you seen their body language? What makes you think your people aren’t capable of betraying or, at the very least, willing to betray you?”
❥ You laughed mockingly. Infuriating the man before you. “Common sense.” “And you think you guys have that? Wow.” Ok that crossed the line a bit. “Ha? You little-” “Leader come on!”
❥ ‘What a brave soul, I’ll remember your sacrifice’ you thought as you glanced at the man who was twiddling with his fingers but had a determined look on his downcasted eyes. “Are you really- Hah. So you’ve thought about it.” Huh, if it was this easy to get in between the group’s teamwork then they weren’t really good in the first place.
❥ “Oh don’t be like that you guys! Your leader is reasonable! The problem with gangs is that the person it takes to become a leader is not the type of person we would want as a civilian.” You defended the person on the verge of getting ganged on.
❥ “Yeah! You guys pushed me to this position! Why are you acting like you’re all saints!” Oh how you wished you had popcorn. Some people coughed, some cleared their throats. You took that as a sign to speak “But then again, It’s not their fault you're such a greedy tyrant! I bet if they knew the outcome they wouldn’t have pushed you!”
❥ Your words paired with a face that looked so innocent, so free of implications made others get their confidence back. “I’m done with your tyranny!” “Yeah!” “You’ve lost the way of the delinquents!”
❥ “YOU!” Their leader fumed, turning his back on you who was hiding your face in the shadows of your hair. Punches began to fly, kicks, tackles as well as weapons were involved. It was hilarious, how they thought they could last with that amount of trust in each other.
❥ You looked outside of the window, trying to count the seconds away. Ignoring the sounds of grunts and groans around you. Finally, the sound of revving motorcycles was heard by you alone. The people around you, too busy fighting each other that they forgot the real threat.
❥ “Hey come on now, what? We just got here and you’re already fighting? Tsk tsk” The sight of the braided and bleached hair of your lover sent joy scouring through you. “Ran~!” you cooed as you smiled, ignoring the looks thrown at you with unnerve.
❥ “Haa...I deal with you enough at home, but now I have to deal with your crazy girlfriend” Rindou muttered at his older brother who pretended to not hear, Ran’s gaze was on you and nothing else.
❥ “You ok? Sorry I got you involved...but then again you handled it like a champ. That’s my girl” He said with a proud and award-winning smile. “...What are you doing?” It did not escape your vision how Ran had been holding some kind of tape. Though all he said back in reply was a simple “Shhh”
❥ “You’re way cuter when you don’t open your mouth” While the others were looting whatever they could from the place, Ran placed a generous amount of tape on your mouth. “Mmph!” you exclaimed in protest through the type, your eyes beginning to burn in anger which made Ran shiver for a bit.
❥ “I- It’s a joke! It’s a joke haha! I’m untying you now!” True to his words, he untied the rope that burned your wrists. You were about to rip the tape of your mouth and shout your not so nice words at him when he grabbed your hand.
❥ “I love you, but please, for the love of god and for everybody’s sanity keep that tape on.”
