i've looked into it bc it's something i'm unfamiliar with - no wonder! it's a Kujawian tradition (region near the sea) while i grew up on the opposite side of the country haha
from the Etnographic Museum in Toru艅
"Wzory wysypywane piaskiem sta艂y si臋 jednym z element贸w sztuki ludowej charakterystycznych dla zdobnictwa kujawskiego, wyr贸偶niaj膮cym go na tle s膮siednich region贸w. Zwyczaj ten znany by艂 na Kujawach od 2. po艂. XIX w. Rozpowszechni艂 si臋 w okresie pouw艂aszczeniowym wraz ze wzrostem zamo偶no艣ci mieszka艅c贸w wsi, kt贸rej efektem sta锟斤拷a si臋 wi臋ksza dba艂o艣ci o wn臋trza mieszkalne i obej艣cia. Ta forma zdobnictwa, przekazywana z pokolenia na pokolenie, by艂a domen膮 kobiet i cieszy艂a si臋 w艣r贸d nich du偶膮 popularno艣ci膮. Do wysypywania wzor贸w u偶ywano bia艂ego piasku przynoszonego lub przywo偶onego zazwyczaj z tzw. pia艣nicy, czyli miejsca gdzie kopano piasek. Musia艂 by膰 suchy, sypki i mia艂ki, dlatego wymaga艂 odpowiedniego przygotowywania. Dla najstarszych tradycyjnych piaskowych wzor贸w charakterystyczne by艂y motywy mitycznego drzewa 偶ycia, a tak偶e nawi膮zania do archaicznej symboliki solarnej i lunarnej."
Translation:
"Patterns created with sand became one of the elements of folk art characteristic for the kuyavian decoration, making it distinctive from its neighbouring regions. This custom was known in Kuyavy since the 2nd half of the 19th century. It became more common after the abolition of serfdom following the villagers becoming better off financially, which in effect caused them to care more about the state of the areas inside and outside of their homes. This form of decoration, passed on from generation to generation, was women's domain and was fairly popular amongst them. To create the patterns they used white sand carried on foot or on a carriage, usually from so-called "pia艣nica" that is a place where the sand was dug out. It had to be dry, loose and fine, so it required the right preparation. For the oldest of the traditional sand patterns, it was characteristic to use motifs of the mythological tree of life, as well as relate to the archaic solar and lunar symbolism."
"Sypanie piaskiem" is an old custom from the rural parts of Poland that consists in drawing protective or decorative symbols with sand.
#it started while poland was completely taken over by its neighbours#bc we were wiped off the maps for 123years till we were reinstated post WW1#i wonder if that had something to do with it#we lost our country our language was repressed our culture and history discarded-#was this an effort at remaining independent?#or was this an effort at assimilating the occupant's traditions to appease them?#probably the first one tho#poles during occupations were nothing but stubborn LOL#123 years we were gone i remind you#1795-1918#by the time we were free#there wasn't a person left alive who remembered the last time
