the graph in question, from the book ‘plants and the K-T boundary’ by Douglas J. Nichols and Kirk R. Johnson
if i had a partner i would wake them up right now and i would say babe wake up im thinking about the plants that went extinct in the kt boundary comet blast again. babe the world has ended 1 million times and i want to grieve for every single one of them and its really messed up except for immediately after the kt extinction event when the ferns had so much sex they left an observable stripe of spore-dense matter fossilized in the rock forever, like that part was kinda funny. i think i have a stmoach ulcer again btw

#not pictured from the book: an explanation of the signor-lipps effect and how it applies to this #which is like. bc fossils in general are rare we can’t conclude that bc a plant isn’t in fossils anymore that it went extinct #which is important #we know that the common plants not showing up anymore in the fossil record is prob related to the extinction in question #but for the much less common or rare species that were already hard to find #we can’t claim these were killed by the extinction if they were already going extinct or maybe did go extinct organically beforehand #conclusion: the comet did kill a huge amount of plants except for a few guys that maybe just did that on their own actually #or maybe they just moved to an environment where fossils were less likely to happen. who knows #fossils. so full of and devoid of information at the same time. like it’s pretty funny
