not to mention the fact that researching what the resources are in your region and how to access them takes so much time and energy that they're often completely inaccessible to people who are already spending all the time they have available on surviving
like. There ARE often resources and I encourage people to keep an eye out for them: if you luck into finding something useful then that can be lifesaving.
but a trillion individual unpredictable poorly funded self-help means-testing judgemental programs aren't going to solve the damn core problem of "people do not have enough money to live".
#as usual the most useful message here depends on the audience#if your poor and need help: keep an eye out for resources! even the tiniest thing can help sometimes#I've gotten cheques from the government that were 150$ and like. that's laughable but it did still buy me 2 weeks of groceries#if you're doing okay and wondering why poverty is a problem: resources are terrible and not available when people need them#the homelessness housing placement program in my city has a wait time of 4-6 years#virtually nobody is 'fully' homeless for 4-6 years: you hop in and out of bad roommate situations and hotels and your car and friend couche#we have a ridiculously large unhoused population not because a small number of people need homes#but because a large number of people can't afford to keep them#most unhoused people HAVE jobs! often several! rent is just too high and wages are too low#this is a place where the minimum wage is 'good' but it's still almost half of what the city calculates as what people need to live
