Had a nightmare last night about our brother and it was very very sad and reminded us how much we miss the way we used to be closer as kids. Unfortunately this is also the same sibling that refuses to even admit he is racist and shuts down any conversation that even vaguely mentions or alludes to discussing racism. And he is also the one who got very upset at Juno a few months ago for daring to say they dislike Mr White Man YouTuber "W*ndigoon" (censored for several reasons) profiting off of indigenous culture without even representing the cultural spirit correctly, much less respectfully. (Along with him getting upset that people were simply pointing out racism in D&D, and then continuing as a DM to make up his own racist systems that feature the "savage tribes" stereotypes. Sigh!)
I really doubt we're ever going to be able to get anywhere in connecting with this sibling again, but I will admit that he is the one who yelled at us for putting pronouns beside a name when we were just drawing in our sketchbook when we were 16 and now is questioning his own gender and pronouns so ... progress can be made I suppose.
#What makes this somehow even worse though is that we have been doing more research into M.etis culture again lately#and found out that our culture has its own rendition of the aforementioned spirit#so it is just... salt in the wound. We are trying to reconnect with our culture and our brother is fine to be racist towards it.#It is all so upsetting and exhausting.#We have had to stop saying anything about social justice topics as a whole because things have been getting so much worse at home#and it is so difficult and scary and incredibly frustrating!#We have to just sit there when somebody is being racist because if we try to say anything - no matter how carefully or gently - then#we get into a frankly ridiculous amount of trouble and there is no progress that gets made. So we've had to just stop talking completely.#We simply do not talk much at all anymore. It is too difficult to know what will get us into trouble these days.#It is very lonely and very scary though! And I hate that I cannot do anything to fix this! I cannot help Juno at all and it kills me!#I am just not sure what to do and it is absolutely terrible to be so helpless. I am supposed to care for people and yet I cannot do that.#I just want us to be safe but I cannot find a way to make that happen. It's all just so... I cannot find words for it honestly.#lake posts#abuse tw#racism tw

Alchemy Between You & Me: Chapter 2: Sulfur [Guy of Gisborne/Reader]
ao3 link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/27362053/chapters/66860944
chapter below the cut.
chapter 1: arsenic
The following morning you awoke with a start. Someone was rapping on your chamber door.
Hastily wrapping your blanket around yourself, you heed their call, albeit begrudgingly. There’s a clear grimace on your face as you peer at the guard that stood at the ready for your answer and he bows before you.
“Good morning, my lady. I’m sorry to disturb you, but the sheriff requires your presence in his quarters.”
“At this hour?” you replied dryly. With a sigh, you give him a nod of your head. “I’ll be with you shortly,” you excused yourself and slipped the dress from the night before over your chemise.
You made a mental note to peruse the seamstresses and fabric sellers in the area later. If you were going to stay here, you could at least keep up with the latest fashions.
After fixing your hair and splashing some cold water on your face, you exited your room and started to follow the guard that walked down the halls with post-haste.
Several winding hallways later and you stood in front of a large wooden door that had two more soldiers posted on either side as watchmen. They each gave a nod to the guard that escorted you and together, pushed open the door to the sheriff’s quarters.
The room was large and furnished with an enormous desk made of a dark, almost black colored wood. A fireplace stood nearby, the logs burning in the hearth crackling away. Several bookshelves were placed around the room, all of them packed with various maps and tomes, and curiously, there was an assortment of birdcages.
You peered up at the tiny, straw things, each of them filled with a variety of songbirds and finches. Their tiny, peeping cries mingled with the sound of the town below as folks prepared their wares for the morning market.
The sheriff was seated at his desk, scribbling away on a large piece of parchment with a rather ridiculously oversized quill.
Sir Guy stood beside him and you felt your heart flutter at his acknowledging smile. He cleared his throat and tapped the sheriff on the shoulder.
“My lord, she’s arrived.”
His head instantly snapped up and his eyes widened in delight. “Indeed she has,” he said and gave you a crooked smile. “Thank you,” he addressed the guard. “You may leave us.”
The soldier bowed before the sheriff and took his leave, closing the doors behind him with a loud slam.
“You’re probably wondering why I summoned you here, my dear,” he said and ushered you forward with a beckon of his hand.
You took the few tentative steps forward to reach the edge of his desk and he gave you another smile.
“There’s no need to look so worried,” he assured. “I merely wanted to check-in, see how things are going.”
“Check-in?” you repeated, absolutely dumbfounded. You’d been taken from your studies, only to be dropped off on this conniving little man’s doorstep as his upcoming entertainment and he wanted to know how you were doing?
You were in such shock that you couldn’t even bring yourself to think of a reply, so the sheriff took your silence as his cue to continue.
“I trust that your room is to your satisfaction? I tried my best to find one that’d be easy for you to find. Can’t have my alchemist accidentally wandering off somewhere unsavory now can we?”
You coughed up a weary laugh in response. “Yes, I’ll admit, it’s going to take some getting used to, but I’ll manage.”
“Good,” he nodded. “I hear that Gisborne offered to give you the grand tour, hmm?” he chuckled. “I bet it’s high time you see where it is you’ll be working.”
“I’ll be working here? In the castle?” you raise an eyebrow up at him skeptically.
“Of course. Guy will show you,” he said and flourished his hand up at Gisborne. “Oh, and while you’re out,” he added. “Perhaps you could take the lovely young lady shopping? I doubt she’s keen to join your club of wearing the same dreary thing every day.”
You noticed Guy roll his eyes but he nodded his head at the sheriff’s request. “Very well,” he said and turned to face you.
His expression softened significantly and he gave you another smile. “If you would follow me, my lady,”
Giving the sheriff a curtsy, you quickly departed his office and let out a long sigh of relief as you walked out into the hallway.
There was just something about that man… he was so unsettling to be around!
A gentle hand outstretched onto your shoulder and you craned your neck up to look at Guy.
“I could show you to the lab first if you wish.”
Your interest is immediately peaked and your eyes light up as you smile brightly. “Lab? There’s a lab in the castle?”
He chuckled and started to lead the way, keeping his pace slow and leisurely. “Of course. Where else would you work?”
“To be perfectly honest, I hadn’t the slightest clue what entailed working as the sheriff’s personal alchemist,” you said lightly. “For a moment, I presumed he’d have me presiding over some rubble in the hopes that I’d turn it to gold.”
Guy chuckled. “That’d be quite the trick,” he said and you felt your cheeks burn under his stare. “But, the sheriff has proved himself to be a man of many interests and his pursuit of alchemy has always been on the more scientific side.”
“Really? I find that surprising. Most nobles only attach alchemy with the ridiculous notion of chrysopoeia. What makes the sheriff so different?”
“He’s seen what real alchemy can do,” Guy said and paused before a wrought iron door. With a tug of the large, circular doorknob, you are greeted with a wondrous sight.
The room was gigantic. Long wooden shelves hung suspended in the air by ropes, each one of them packed to the brim with all sorts of paraphernalia. Tall, curved windows allowed slits of sunlight to breach through the darkness of the stone castle and you gasped in delight.
Running over to more closely inspect the ingredients and tools, you were pleasantly surprised that Guy had been right with his assessment of the sheriff. Most of the jars were filled with a variety of herbs, gemstones, powders, and liquids. It was a bit of a mess, and a great deal of dust had settled over the room from unuse but… you could definitely make do with this.
“What do you think?” Guy wondered.
“It needs a bit of work to get back to its former glory, but,” your lips split into another grin as you discovered a few tomes tucked between some flasks. “This is more than I could have hoped for,”
Guy’s boots clicked softly against the stone floor as he made his way towards you. “I’m glad. Do you think you’ll have everything you need? I know it’s been awhile since anyone has worked here.”
“I’ll have to take inventory of everything that’s here,” you replied. “Which… may take a while.”
“I should leave you to it then,” he said and bowed before you. “While you’re working, I’ll have someone head to the market and fetch you some clothes.”
“Oh, there’s no need to do that. I can do it myself—”
“Nonsense,” he interrupted with a smile. “It’s no trouble, really. Is there any particular style that you’d prefer?”
“No,” you chuckled. “As long as I get something to wear other than this,” you gesture to your worn-out gown. “I’ll be content. At least tell me that you’ll accept any payments I forward for your generosity.”
“That won’t be necessary. Your parents already forwarded more than enough money to help pay for your keep, not that they needed to, as the sheriff was more than happy having you simply work here in the castle.”
“Oh…” you replied and disappointment flashed across your face. They really had been planning for this to happen all along, hadn’t they?
You felt a hand on your shoulder and jumped, heat rising to your cheeks when you realized how close Guy stood before you.
“Work should help take your mind off things,” he replied with a sympathetic smile.
“Yes… you make a good point, Sir Guy,” you reached up and gave his arm a squeeze, grateful for not only his company but his friendship as well.
His eyes widened slightly at the gesture and he retracted his hand as he cleared his throat. “The sheriff will most likely stop by at some point, to check on your progress. I’m not sure when he expects you to begin work on the black powder, but he is not a man that likes to be kept waiting.”
You frowned and heaved a heavy sigh. “I’ll see what I can do.”
With one final curtsy, Guy exited the lab, leaving you alone to begin the arduous work of whipping this place back into shape.
Rolling up your sleeves, you managed to find some old rags nestled on a shelf and after pounding them out one of the windows, you got to it. The amount of dust in the room frankly astonished you and it took a good few hours to simply wipe everything down.
Wiping some sweat off your brow, you checked over the flasks and tools you had let sit in a vat of warm saltwater. It seemed to be doing the trick, years of grime easily sloughing off the glass and metal and turning the water a nasty brown. It had to be changed several times till they were cleaned to your satisfaction and when they were done soaking, you laid them out on one of the desks to let them dry.
To the surprise of no one, it took you the most time to sort through all of the materials that had accumulated here since the last alchemist. A majority of the items were useful, powders, and caustic liquids that could be used in your research. However, a fair amount of it proved to be nothing more than junk and near the end of your sifting, there was a fairly large pile haphazardly strewn about near the door.
The one thing that did catch you by surprise, was the wide array of books that had been preserved. They were legitimate books on alchemy and you started to wonder how the sheriff acquired these. Most alchemists were hellbent on only ever sharing their texts with fellow researchers as it took so long to produce the images, the decknamen, that hide the secret code of their formulas. These were all wonderfully done and although you could decipher most of them, there were a few that caught your eye as you flipped through the pages and you made a mental note to revisit them for further analysis.
You’re broken out of your reverie by the sound of the heavy door being pulled open and in walked the sheriff, one of his guards trailing closely behind him.
He made a face at the pile of discarded items and carefully stepped around the random objects scattered across the floor.
“Doing a little redecorating?” he teased.
“Most of that is rubbish, my lord,” you replied. “It is of no use to me.”
He glanced down at the large heap and then turned his attention back to you. “Well, well, I must say, it does please me that you’ve taken this with such stride,” he slowly walked over to you, his head turning around as he inspected the work you’d done thus far. “This place almost looks brand new.”
“I must admit, it was rather filthy,” you said and wiped your hands clean with a rag. “When was this lab last in use?”
“Oh, not for some time,” he mused and peered down at all of the flasks that lay drying. “My last alchemist preceded a pretty boy that wasn’t a pretty boy at all,” he chuckled to himself. “Although I have to admit, their alchemy was quite lovely. Tell me, have you ever heard of liquid that can melt through solid iron?”
“Sounds like aqua fortis to me,”
The sheriff beamed up at you and he clapped his hands together in delight. “Goodness me, where have you been all my life? I trust that you will begin work on the black powder that you promised, now that this place is so spick and span.”
“Of course, my lord. Curiously, the only ingredient I seem to be lacking is charcoal.”
“Charcoal?” he echoed. “Run of the mill, fire-burnt charcoal?”
“Yes,” you replied firmly. “I have everything else I need and once I have all the materials, I’ll be able to play with the ratios a bit to get the desired reaction. Did you previous alchemists really not know all this?”
“They were not you, my dear,” he replied and gave one of your arms a strong squeeze. “See to it that the lovely lady gets her charcoal,” he said to the soldier, who nodded his head and hastily made his way out of the lab. “Once everything is in place… how much do you think you’d be able to make?”
“As long as I have all the ingredients at my disposal, I can make you as much as you desire, my lord.”
His eyes lit up, like a child that’d been handed a whole pie as a treat. “Oh, you sweet girl, you will have such a remarkable future here. I’ll make sure to fetch Gisborne when he’s back from the market. He oversaw our previous efforts into concocting black powder so I believe he’ll be able to assist you in replicating the results we managed to achieve.”
“Were your previous efforts successful?”
“Mm… yes and no. He commissioned a man who turned out to have other plans,” he said, face taught and tone laced with acidity. “We ended up with nothing so, forgive me if I ever seem at all forthright in my advances to move this project along. Which reminds me…” he mused and tapped a finger to his lips. “Are you in the habit of keeping notes of your work? A ledger, perhaps?”
“Of course,” you nodded. “However, as most alchemists do, I tend to encrypt my findings, my lord.”
“Hmm, well, just for me, do you think you’d be able to keep a log of your findings so that I may peruse them at my leisure?”
“I suppose I could,” you said carefully. “Although I doubt even then, you’d be able to make much sense of it.”
“Oh, that’s quite alright,” he said with a chipper smile. “So, I doubt you’ll be able to make much progress till we’re back with that charcoal of yours. Feel free to take a stroll, occupy your time. Just make sure you stay inside the castle.”
“Yes, my lord.”
He gave you one last grin as he started to hum to himself, gleefully departing the room with an extra pip in his step.
You thought it rather odd that he should desire access to your notes. For what purpose would that serve him? Did he perhaps wish to market your formula to other lords in the shire? That wouldn’t be a bad play, he’d surely make a considerable amount of money. You could only hope that if these were his true intentions, you’d receive some of the profit as you sincerely doubted that the funds your parents sent for your keep would ever end up in anyone’s pockets but the sheriff’s.
Walking outside, you make your way through several hallways and commend yourself for finding the exit on your first try. The courtyard was mostly empty, with a few soldiers standing here or there at their posts. The portcullis was open and you could see all of the townsfolk going about their day, the busy hum of the market seeping into the quiet castle.
In fact, that is where you were headed until you noticed someone sitting on one of the stone benches that rested under a tree.
It was a woman, with beautiful, curly brown hair that rested on her shoulders. She had a fair face and bright green eyes and appeared to be working on some sort of embroidery.
You’re instantly intrigued. Who was she? She dressed far too opulent to be a servant so did she also work for the sheriff? The least you could do was introduce yourself.
You gently cleared your throat as you approached her and she lifted her head up to meet your gaze. Her lips upturned into a courteous smile and she set aside her project as she spoke up.
“Hello,” she said, her sweet voice having a lovely quality to it. “How can I help you?”
“Oh, well, I thought it pertinent to introduce myself to anyone else that I meet, since I’m the newest resident here in the castle.”
One of her finely shaped eyebrows quirked up, her curiosity peaked. “What business do you have at the castle?”
“I am the sheriff’s recently appointed alchemist.”
“Alchemist?” she gaped. “You’re an alchemist?”
“Indeed,” you replied with a nod of your head and introduced yourself.
“It’s lovely to meet you,” she replied. “I am Marian of Knighton.”
You gestured towards the bench and she immediately patted the spot beside her as she accepted your invitation to sit down.
“Knighton? Isn’t that where the former sheriff hailed from?”
“That’s my father,” she said fondly. “I find it intriguing that a woman should be a scientist, especially one that’s managed to capture the sheriff’s attention.”
“Yes well, I’m not exactly here on my own volition,” you said and laughed quietly as a weary smile spread across your face.
“That doesn’t surprise me since you’re working for the sheriff.”
You’re intrigued that she seems to share, even understand your sentiments. “Do you work for the sheriff as well?” you wondered.
“No,” she chuckled. “I… I suppose one could call me a guest if the meaning of guest has since become synonymous with hostage.”
You gasped and it was only then did she seem to register the gravity of her words.
“Forgive me,” she hastily muttered. “I speak out of turn—”
“No,” you replied. “I… this might sound strange, but… I understand how you feel.”
“You do?” she sounded genuinely surprised, but you could sense that her sincerity bordered on suspicion.
“Lady Marian, my passions lie in academia so that is where I found myself these last couple of years, studying in Italy under the guidance of fellow academics,”
“Impressive.”
You smiled and then heaved a sad sigh. “I would have been content spending the rest of my days there, relishing in new discoveries and learning as much as my heart desired. However, my parents had other plans. They’ve always been the sort to stick close to those up-in-coming to power, so it should come as no surprise that they did all they could to get into the new sheriff’s favors.”
“Are you saying that they dragged you here? To Nottingham?”
“Indeed,” you replied. “They must have surmised how beneficial my most recent undertaking could be for them since the most they probably understood about alchemy is the infamous notion of turning cheap metals into gold. I was sent back home only to be dropped off here, presented to the sheriff on a silver platter.”
Her face was creased with concern and she placed a gentle hand on your shoulder. “I’m sorry,” she said. “It’s truly an awful thing, what your parents did. I cannot imagine what that must feel like.”
You chuckled, a bitter sound that made your stomach turn as you recalled the events that took place only the night before. “I think the worst part of it all was having to find out from the sheriff that I was to be staying here.”
Marian scoffed. “They didn’t even have the courage to tell you themselves?”
“No,” you said forlornly. “I probably would have gone mad that day had it not been for Sir Guy.”
“Guy?” she echoed, her tone laced with shock.
“He’s been nothing but kind since I’ve arrived,” you said and a smile curled at the ends of your lips. However, you picked up on the change in her voice and turned to her, head cocked to the side as you added, “You know him?”
“You could say that…”
Her gaze shifted to the side, her eyes narrowed slightly as her lips were pursed into a tight, thin line. You could sense that she had something on her mind, although she seemed reluctant to reveal it to you.
You were sincerely not in the mood to deal with anyone else that felt the need to hide things from you, you’d had enough of that for two lifetimes.
“What is it?” your voice was taught and had an edge to it that made her immediately look back up at you.
She sighed hopelessly in response and fiddled with the string that was still tied around the eye of her needle.
“I do not believe it is my place to say,”
“If you feel the need to blatantly lie to my face then I can only assume that you do in fact have something to say on the matter,”
She gaped at your harsh tone, however, she took no offense to your anger. On the contrary, she believed you had every right to be upset. She knew all too well what it felt like to have your life uprooted at the whims of powerful people and not only that, have your emotions completely tossed to the side as well. It was unfair for her to hide what she knew about Guy’s true nature from you to spare your feelings, after all, she knew how truly dangerous he was.
She had to approach this carefully, not wanting to overstep her own boundaries and all-but crucifying the man you believed was a true friend, the only person thus far in Nottingham that treated you with an ounce of respect. But Marian knew better than to expect that Guy was doing this all out of the goodness of his own heart. Knowing him, there must certainly be an ulterior motive for his actions. It pained her to do so, seeing how much faith you’d already put in him, but the truth had to be revealed.
“I’ve known Guy for some time,” she began and inched closer to you. “He and I became acquaintances shortly after the sheriff arrived in town. Back then, Vasey was a nobleman, one that had been sent down by Prince John himself on the excuse that he was to assess the state of things here in Nottingham county. As I’m sure you know, my father was usurped by Vasey for the role of sheriff and we had no say in the matter, not unless we wanted to be deemed as traitors of the crown,”
There was a deep frown on your face and Marian’s eyes widened in surprise when one of your hands reached out to gently hold one of her own.
“I’m terribly sorry about what you and your father went through,” you said genuinely and she smiled gratefully in response. “I was curious as to what befell the previous sheriff since from what I can remember, I always took him as the sort of man that would live out the end of his days doing his job.”
At that, Marian laughed. “You’d be quite right in that assumption. My father loved his job. He fell in love with the people of Nottingham and he did everything in his power to ensure that the law was upheld fairly. It seems Prince John had other plans, however, which called for someone a little more lacking in sympathies.”
She appeared lost in thought for a moment, reminiscing on simpler times that she often longed for in retrospect to how things were now. After a moment, she offered you a shy smile and continued with her story.
“At first, I found myself growing fond of Guy’s much quieter disposition compared to the sheriff. Despite initially being wary of the two since Vasey came into my father’s position, I appreciated the time that Guy took to ensure that both my father and I were well looked after and taken care of. We were key players in Nottingham, after all, and the sheriff would be a fool to completely toss aside my father, someone that had garnered the trust of most of the nobles that still ran the council. Not to mention, he still had the overwhelming support of the people behind him as well. It wasn’t until Guy was appointed Lord of Locksley that everything started to change,”
Marian took a moment to meticulously choose her next words for she noticed the wariness that had startled to take its hold on you from the ominous shift in her tone.
“Guy has always been one that values power and loyalty,” she explained. “However, it wasn’t until he was given the estate that I was able to see first hand just how far he’d go in order to obtain those things. The man I once thought of as a shy, inexperienced up-and-coming lieutenant, had evolved into a monster,”
“Monster?” you’re completely taken aback. Your hand rested over your heart from shock and you felt your body subconsciously lean away from her, appalled that Marian could ever say such a thing.
“Listen to me,” she said urgently. “You were not here these last five years, I have seen first-hand the things he’s done! What he’s capable of! I’ve…I…” her voice trailed off, a tightness in her throat beginning to overwhelm her as tears started to prick at the corner of her eyes.
Your stomach sank at the sight, regret immediately beginning to gnaw away at your previous dismissal of her words from the raw despair breaking out on her once confident visage.
“I was a part of it…” a few tears slipped past her defenses and she stubbornly turned her head from you as she attempted to quickly wipe them away.
You tentatively reach out and place a hand on her shoulder, giving it a reassuring squeeze. A million possibilities were swimming around in your head as you attempted to deduce what could have possibly happened between the two of them. However, whatever the outcome turned out to be, it was clear that it had left a deep emotional scar on Lady Marian’s heart.
“It’s alright,” you said softly and rubbed your thumb in slow, comforting circles. “If it is too painful to dwell on, my lady, I put no pressure on you to tell me. Your message rings out loud enough without having to tell me forthright,”
She sniffled and shakily wrapped one of her hands around your welcoming embrace, gingerly removing it from her shoulder to place both of your hands in her lap. When she deemed herself composed enough, she turned back around to finally face you once again.
“I appreciate your kind words,” she said with a small smile. “It is not every day that I come across someone so understanding. But…” she let a sad sigh slip past her lips before steeling her resolve, staring at you with renewed vigor. “You deserve to know about my history with Guy, you deserve to know about—”
“Excuse me, my lady?”
Both of you are startled when a guard calls out to you from the steps and you quickly clear your throat to respond.
“Yes?”
“I’m sorry to interrupt,” he said, sending a curious glance at Marian. “But Sir Guy wanted to inform you that your charcoal has arrived and that he is waiting for you in the laboratory.”
“I see,” you replied tersely. “Very well, tell him that I shall be up shortly,”
The guard nodded and with a curt bow, he was off in a flash to deliver your message to Guy.
The conflict was apparent in your gaze as you turned your focus back to Marian and she gave you a sympathetic smile.
“Go,” she stated. “Consider our conversation tabled for now,”
“I’m sure it will not kill him to wait a few moments,”
She laughed at your snide comment, the sound genuine and full of light. It brought a smile of your own to your face.
“It would pain me for you to fall into any sort of trouble your first day here,” she confessed. Giving your hand a tight squeeze, she relinquished her hold on you and got up from her seat, picking up her abandoned embroidery pattern and tucking it under her arm. “I promise that we shall continue this conversation. There is only so much time I can spend embroidering,” she teased. “And I happen to know where the lab is located so, who knows? Perhaps I will make an unexpected visit… or two.”
You grinned and hopped off the bench, a newfound excitement coursing through your veins as the prospect of having a new, true friend presented itself to you.
“Well, who am I to deny such a request?”
Marian laughed again and offered you another heartfelt smile as she playfully hoped you’d make do with your promise, before heading towards one of the many arched doorways and disappearing back into the castle.
You found it hard to mask the smile that was still plastered on your face, overjoyed at meeting someone that you could wholeheartedly trust.
All at once though, a bitter taste filled your mouth as your previous feelings for the dashing master of arms came back round. Simply put, you quickly derived that the persona he’d presented to you thus far greatly strayed away from his true human nature. The very thought that he’d been using your confusion and betrayal from the circumstances of your arrival for you to trust him cause you to inwardly shudder. If you had not met Marian, what else would he have lied about to get you in his good graces?
Anxiety bubbled its way through your chest as you slowly ascended the stairs that lead up to the laboratory. How were you to approach the situation? Should you act as though nothing has changed? Should you distance yourself from him? Tell him to leave altogether?
As much as you wished you could outright dismiss his advances, you knew that it would be impossible to completely avoid Sir Guy due to how intimately involved he was with this project.
You cursed yourself at how easily you’d allowed yourself to become enamored with him from his dashing appearance alone. How could you ever forget that looks can be deceiving?
Your heart started to beat erratically against your rib cage, your breathing slightly labored as you stood before the heavy, intimidating iron door. The following hours were inevitable, your fate having long been sealed since you walked through the castle doors the night before. You knew it served no purpose to stall this out any longer than need be, so gathering up your courage, you tugged on the handle and walked inside.
You immediately noticed Guy standing off in the corner beside a few barrels that held the charcoal the sheriff had so dutifully fetched for you. Upon hearing your arrival, a smile lights up his face and he makes a beeline towards you.
Your feet appear to have a mind of their own, backing up a few paces as he closed in on you, effectively keeping the two of you apart.
This does not go unnoticed. Guy’s eyes flash with an unreadable emotion, his smile faltering until it fades altogether. The air around you is stifling and when you make no move to speak, he goes rigid, his shoulders squaring back and he clears his throat behind one of his gloved hands.
“The charcoal that you requested has arrived,” he said cooly and stepped aside, keeping a firm distance between the both of you.
If you hadn’t known any better, you’d say he almost looked offended at your behavior and although you desperately wished to solidify any thoughts he had that you wanted nothing more to do with him, you had to remind yourself that he was your superior. You had no powerful friends here, no family that could protect you should you say the wrong thing or step on the wrong toes. You were all alone and for that, you had to ensure that those who unfortunately held your life in the balance held no ill-will towards you.
A shaky, half-hearted smile managed to find its way on your face, even if it did not reach your eyes. “Thank you,” you said softly and gracefully walked over towards the barrels to get a better look.
In spite of everything, you were astounded that they had managed to scrounge up so much material so quickly.
“I’m impressed that they were able to find as much as they did,” you commented. “Your men work fast.”
Guy seemed to relax slightly from your words and he nodded his head. “It is their job. I’m pleased that it is to your satisfaction,”
“You’ve more than exceeded my expectations, Sir Guy,” you replied and felt your stomach turn at how his eyes sparkled in delight at your compliment.
Well, at least he was easily fooled by your act of professionalism.
He took a few timid steps towards you, as if you were a wild animal that he’d scare off should he approach too quickly. “I understand both the sheriff and I have told you I once worked on a project in patenting a formula for black powder, but I must admit that I will be of little help to you in this endeavor,”
The prospect of having him leave you to work on this alone had you silently thanking whatever gods were at play, but you never let that relief shine through.
“Well, I wouldn’t say that,” you replied. “If you were able to see the product in action, that would help me attempt to replicate the effects with my own ratios,”
“Really?”
He was genuinely surprised and you nodded your head.
“Yes. Any details that you can remember, anything at all, will give me the best shot at ensuring that you get the most out of the batches I’m able to create,”
Grabbing a piece of parchment and a quill, you sat down on one of the stools and pointed at the one in front of you as an indication for Guy to follow suit. The next hour or so was spent with you furiously scribbling down notes as you listened intently to Guy’s previous experience with black powder.
It was here that you learned the previous alchemist’s name had been Lambert and his formula was certainly an explosive one. You were impressed by the picture Guy painted. Lambert demonstrated that by using a trail of black powder that led to a small, compact source, the charge could be controlled and ensured maximum energy output while simultaneously being safe enough for commercial use. The resulting explosion had been powerful, creating a crater in the ground large enough for the sheriff to comfortably stand in.
You asked several other questions, wondering how the fire had interacted with the fuse or the consistency and color of the powder itself. By the end, you surmised that you had enough information to finally begin your work.
“I appreciate your help, Sir Guy,” you placed your notes on the nearby counter, your eyes scanning over them as you reread a few key points.
“I’m glad that I could be of assistance,” he mused and placed a hand on your shoulder.
It took all the strength within you not to flinch at his touch and you hoped that he’d take the hint you wished to get started and excuse himself on his own accord.
His hand lingered for longer than you would have liked and you heard him say, “I will leave you to your work then, milady. If you require any further assistance, please don’t hesitate to ask,”
“Thank you,”
When the door finally closed behind you, a breath you hadn’t known you were holding escaped you in a long, arduous sigh. You rub your temples with the pads of your fingers in an attempt to dull the throbbing behind your eyes, both physically and mentally exhausted from the unfolding of the day’s events. You’d gone from trusting this man to not wanting to have anything to do with him in the span of twenty-four hours. You could almost akin the feeling to whiplash.
The bells of the nearby church tolling out the arrival of another hour brought your focus back to the task at hand. There was no time for you to dwell too much on Sir Guy’s motives, not when the sheriff expected quick results on an assignment you so keenly promised to deliver.
However, even as you pushed your troubling thoughts aside, there was one thing you came to agree upon; Sir Guy was not to be trusted.

A-Ying is in so much trouble!
Jiang Cheng meant well, except for when he inadvertently made Wei Ying cried over rabbits. All things considered, it was truly a miracle Lan Wangji wasn't angrier.
I'm getting more invested in this au but really only have enough brain capacity and energy to write silly one-shot at the moment. :3 Enjoy!~
[Part 1 - you should totes read this first]
[read on ao3 instead]
It wasn’t like Jiang Cheng was overly worried about Wei Wuxian. He knew Lan Wangji would take good care of his husband, no matter what form he took. But Jiang Cheng also couldn’t control his nagging conscience, and soon found himself walking down the path toward the Jingshi.
Today was the last day of the Discussion Conference. Thank fuck , Jiang Cheng thought to himself the moment he woke up earlier in the morning, back aching from all the sitting and chatting he’d done for the last two days. He’d scheduled for the Jiang Sect to head back to Yumeng promptly the following morning, which did not leave much free time for anything else. And Jiang Cheng really wanted to have another... uhm, heart-to-heart with Lan Huan in private.
( Ah, Lan Huan ~ It tickled him to no end that he got to address the Chief Cultivator so intimately.)
Jiang Cheng walked past the Cold Springs just in time to catch Wei Wuxian, buck naked, jumping into the water from a rocky ledge with frankly an alarming amount of enthusiasm.
“Wei Wuxian! Be careful!” Jiang Cheng immediately rushed over and scolded his brother, who had grown to an eight-year-old gremlin over the last two days.
“Oh! Hi Sect Leader Jiang!!!” Wei Ying waved both his arms in the air and sprayed water everywhere as a result.
“Why are you out here by yourself? Where’s Lan Wangji?” Jiang Cheng took multiple steps back away from the failing child once he deemed him not in danger of drowning.
“Lan Zhan is feeding the rabbits!!!!” Wei Ying said, pointed towards the Rabbits Hill.
“I’m surprised you’re not tailing him to pet the rabbits,” Jiang Cheng remembered the rabbits being brought in by Wei Ying literally a lifetime ago.
“They don’t love me,” Wei Ying frowned, tears suddenly forming in his doe eyes.
“Huh?” Jiang Cheng stood, dumbfounded. “They’re rabbits. They love whoever feeds them.”
“But they don’t love me,” Wei Ying wailed, looking extremely sad and on the verge of tears.
“Ok, ok, don’t cry,” Jiang Cheng tried to put on a soothing tone, “Keep on swimming. Rabbits are no fun anyway.”
“I love rabbits!!! So much!! But they don’t love me !!!” Wei Ying sniffled, big fat teardrops are rolling down his chubby cheeks.
Jiang Cheng was at a loss as to what to do. He tried to recall what he had done with Jin Ling when he was a babe, but all he could remember was rushing off to find the nursemaids and eventually relying entirely on nannies to handle the emotional side of things. Also, who would cry over rabbits anyway?
“If you’re going to sulk, at least do it on dry land,” Jiang Cheng decided to focus on keeping the child from catching a cold instead of dealing with the tears first. He crouched down and offered a hand towards Wei Ying, who surprisingly obeyed and let himself be pulled out of the water.
Tossing the discarded white robes at the kid, Jiang Cheng grumbled, “Put your clothes back on and let’s go find something else you can do instead.”
Wei Ying, uncharacteristically, fastened his robes quietly and followed behind Jiang Cheng without much fanfare but a lot of sniffles. The pair wandered back to the guest quarters where the Jiang Sect stayed for the duration of the conference. They must look strange to the other disciples they pass by - with Jiang Cheng’s usual scowl replaced with a befuddled look and Wei Ying trailing behind, eyes brimmed red but no longer crying.
“Uhm... Are you hungry?” Jiang Cheng asked when they settled in his private room. With the mention of food, Wei Ying perked up and looked beseechingly at Jiang Cheng, “I’ll take that as a yes.”
It was long past breakfast but not yet lunchtime, and all Jiang Cheng had on his hands were a pouch full of spicy roasted lotus seeds. He handed it to Wei Ying whose return smile seemed to outshine the summer sun.
“Thank you Sect Leader Jiang!!!” Wei Ying said and immediately shoved a handful of seeds into his mouth with delight, thoughts of rabbits seemingly forgotten.
As he watched the kid munched on happily, Jiang Cheng wondered how much of his memories were returning, if at all. He entertained the possibility of rebuilding their relationship as Wei Wuxian grew up again without all the memories and burdens of past lifetimes. And seriously, how many lives would he have???
“Wei Wuxian? Do you remember who I am?” Jiang Cheng asked, with “to you” left unsaid.
Wei Ying turned his large brown eyes from the lotus seeds to Jiang Cheng, “Hmm? You’re Sect Leader Jiang!”
“Is that it....?”
“Well,” Wei Ying paused, eyebrows knitted together as if he was giving it a great deal of thought. “I remembered you were a little bit... mean... at first,” he said, hesitating before continuing on with a shrug, “But then you gave me spicy lotus seeds!!!”
Jiang Cheng chuckled despite himself. The kid was honest if nothing else. “Just because I give you food, I’m suddenly not mean anymore?”
Wei Ying nodded enthusiastically, “You still look a bit scary, but it’s ok!!! Lan Zhan told me it’s just how your face looks - you can’t help it!”
“He said what?!!!!” Jiang Cheng yelped, but before he could say anything more on the matter, he heard voices echoing down the path toward his room.
“Uh oh! A-Ying is in so much trouble,” Wei Ying mumbled when he recognized one of the voices outside.
Just as Jiang Cheng was about to hunt down the source of the ruckus, the door blew open and Lan Zhan rushed in. “Wei Ying!” Lan Zhan walked right up to where the kid was and patted him up and down, “Are you ok?”
“Hanquang-jun, although I am only a guest at the Cloud Recesses, this is still my private chambers. How could you just run in like that?” Jiang Cheng protested. “And besides, why wouldn’t he be ok here? Stop being so ridiculously overprotective!”
“Lan Zhan!! I’m ok! Sect Leader Jiang gave me spicy lotus seeds!” Wei Ying interrupted, smiling and waving the almost empty pouch at Lan Zhan. “Isn’t he nice?”
“Wei Ying, I asked you to soak in the Cold Springs to speed up your healing progress. Did you do that?” Lan Zhan asked, ignoring the sputtering Jiang Cheng looming behind him.
“I did! Until Sect Leader Jiang came by and asked about the rabbits...” Wei Ying paused, “And I told him I didn’t go feed the rabbits with you because they don’t love me!!!!” He began to tear up in earnest.
“Oh no, here he goes again,” Jiang Cheng muttered. “Lan Wangji, I have no more snacks to offer the kid to cheer him up - so you work your magic or whatever.”
“I told you before - the rabbits love you, Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan said softly, cupping the kid’s face with both of his hands and gently wiped away the tears with his thumbs. “But you have to be patient with them. They’re very skittish.”
It took all of Jiang Cheng’s strengths to not gag, “Are you two done being all mushy here?” He scrunched up his nose and wiggled his fingers at the pair.
“Sect Leader Jiang,” Lan Zhan stood up and turned to face him, “My apologies for coming in unannounced. I was worried when Wei Ying disappeared again and was alarmed when a few disciples informed me they saw him following behind you looking...distressed.”
“Yes, so I could find something fun for him to do since he was crying over the rabbits,” Jiang Cheng said. “If I had known the Cold Springs could speed up his healing, I would have let him stew in there by himself.”
Lan Zhan barely acknowledged Jiang Cheng’s response before turning back to the troublemaker and said, “Wei Ying, bid Sect Leader Jiang goodbye. We need to head back for the lecture.”
“Goodbye, Sect Leader Jiang!!!” Wei Ying all but shouted, gone were the tears shed over rabbits, “Thank you for the lotus seeds!!!” He bowed deeply before bouncing out of the room behind Lan Zhan.
Jiang Cheng felt a headache forming and reached for the teapot. He wished he had snuck in more wine.

Any tips for learning french? :(
ooh this is such an interesting question!!
i’m gonna first give context on my experience with french. as i said in a previous ask, i spent nine years learning it. this was in school, and for the first three years, it was in mandatory classes (there’s no national standard for canadian french education across all the provinces, but in my schooling system you had to start in third grade, and you could stop in tenth grade if you wanted to), the latter six years (7th through 12th) were in what’s called french immersion, an optional and—evidently— more immersive french education than the mandatory french classes that everyone had to take (we called it “core french”)
so i spent a long time learning french. when i graduated high school at 18, i had been learning french half my life. i also got an award for getting the highest marks in the french class i took in grade 12 which was, frankly, mad litty, still one of my crowning achievements, go 2017 em
... but telling you ‘dedicate nine years of your life to it’ clearly isn’t super practical for someone trying to learn it! so here are some more concrete tips:
vocab, vocab, vocab!!
the MOST IMPORTANT part of learning any language. keep track of vocab in any way possible. you can write words down, make physical flashcards, or use a resource like quizlet to make flashcards electronically. this is useful for french because of the gendering of nouns, which english doesn’t do. it’s a strange concept to grasp, and there isn’t a whole lot of logic to it— of course ‘girl’ is feminine (la fille) and ‘boy’ is masculine (le garçon), but it can be hard to remember whether something like the word ‘chair’ is masculine or feminine (for the record, it’s feminine— la chaise).
so much of language learning is just rote memorisation, which i think a lot of people have trouble getting the hang of. it’s a lot of brute work, a lot of boring work, but seeing your fluency progress is more than worth it, in my opinion!
“but em,” i hear you ask, “where do i get vocab?”
watch french tv/film & listen to french music
i started doing this around sixth grade i believe? it was part of our daily homework, to go home and watch TV in french.
and, if i was lucky, i would understand a word or two in a sentence.
this one seems very daunting at first! and it’ll be super confusing initially, with or without subtitles (that one’s up to you! id recommend subtitles at first, before trying to watch without them, or maybe watching with french subtitles!)
skam france (which i’m assuming you’re into, if you’re following me...?) is a lovely option for consuming french media.
listening to music in french is another excellent way to learn! you can look up the lyrics, in french or english, and work your way through the song! i still have to look up lyrics to french songs pretty frequently. though, mind you, i do that for english songs pretty frequently as well oop
there’s this pre-conceived notion that, when you do something like this, you have to understand everything for it to be a success. that’s not the case— far from it, in fact! i spent so long— and in some cases continue to— only being able to get the vague plot of the film/show i was watching, only catching maybe half of the words. but— and stay with me here— that’s an achievement in itself! you aren’t going to ever completely know a language, even your native one! i look up english words all the time, still!!! and understanding the general plot of a story in a language that you’re learning is another one of those super gratifying feelings that you encounter while learning a language.
utilize online resources
this is a huge one, and also a broad one. by this, i mean stuff like duolingo (which i advocate for wholeheartedly!! it has a really good structure lesson-wise, and french is one of its most extensive courses, if not, the most extensive one!)
but by this i also mean things like PDFs of french textbooks! those will give you a similar structure to being in an actual class— i would recommend taking a class if you can, because it forces you to continue learning, even when you don’t want to (because you aren’t always going to be super motivated, let’s be real), but i know that’s not an option, for a lot of people.
and i also mean things like looking up soundbites for introductory french learning. youtube would most likely have plenty of stuff like that. it’s one thing to learn from one source— and if you want to start easy, that’s absolutely fine!— but learning from multiple places would work wonders on comprehension!!
read in french, write in french, speak in french
this is another daunting one, but another ridiculously necessary one. you may feel like you aren’t ready to do any of these things, especially very early on, but one of the biggest tips i have for learning french, or any language really, is to do these as much as you reasonably can, right from the get-go.
another thing i would HIGHLY recommend— and this forces some people to embarrass themselves— is to start off by consuming french media made for babies.
think about it this way: learning a new language is sort of like starting your entire life over. rather than being an english-speaking adult (or teenager), you’re now a french speaking baby. do babies follow proper sentence structure? do they read novels? do they get everything right, linguistically-speaking? no, of course they don’t! conversely— were you born fluent in your native language? or did your parents and family and teachers teach you, word by word, until you got to where you are now?
speaking french aloud is probably the most intimidating part of learning it, at least to me. mind you, this is largely due to circumstances (anglophone teachers, and many of them, leading to me having an awful accent, when i speak french!). for a lot of people, myself included, the fear comes from messing up, especially when talking to francophone people (native french speakers), because there isn’t as much time to think, to verify grammar/vocab/etc.
but this ties in to my baby idea, from above— think of the amount of patience and flexibility that’s necessary when talking to a toddler. do you always understand what a toddler is trying to say to you? no, but you do some of the time! and as the toddler gets older and they learn more and more, conversation gets easier. also, if they get something wrong, you correct them (well, sometimes!) gently, and patiently. you’re basically a toddler that’s more willing to learn than an actual toddler is. communicating with native speakers is key— people that can give you constructive criticism, while also treating you the patience that you deserve. if you know a french person irl, ask them if they’d be willing to talk with you in french, so that you can practice. alternatively, another great way to practice like this if you don’t have someone like that in your life is via email or even snail mail! worldpenpals is lovely for either— you can search for people by country, by language, etc., and once you start talking, you can keep it online, or exchange info and write letters to each other!
another pre-conceived notion that runs rampant in language learning, that i’ve noticed, it the idea that you either know a language or you don’t, that you’re either fluent or you’re not.
and it’s just... not that simple! like at all! like i said a little while ago, i’ve been speaking english for (roughly) 20 years. but would i say that i know english? that i know the entire language? absolutely not!! i look up new words on like a weekly basis!!
if you’re trying to learn a language so you can say “alright, i speak it, i’m done now,” then you’re not learning a language with the right intention! languages are organic things, they grow and change, and you’re never not learning a language, you know? each language is its own little world, and there are so many people who are willing to help you explore it.
#asks;#amis anonymes;#i hope this is at least like... semi-coherent lmao#i just LOVE talking about languages holy shit communication is so wild#also anon i'm not a native speaker by any means but i can definitely help you practice (up to a certain point!)#hope u enjoyed my novel#thx for coming to my TED talk uwu

Sception Plays KHUx episode 2: the gotcha game
After hopping through the portal from last time, Sception ends up in snow white land, and to get the obvious out of the way this place really shouldn’t exist yet. At least not if we’re actually in the distant bast and not in a dream or data world. But then again, it’s a Kingdom Hearts game, so it’s gotta have Disney worlds, so maybe it’s just handwaved. Or maybe the Disney worlds are trapped in some timeless cycle or eternal existential void, like a confused tourist trying to find their way out of a casino.
We fight through several stages of just clearing out some heartless and helping our new Dwarf friend. This is still pretty much straight tutorial time, as we’re ushered from one mission to another with basic game mechanic introductions between them.
The game takes little time introducing the main fake currency, earnable in small amounts in game or purchasable in slightly larger amounts for frankly disgusting amounts of real human dollars, but I’ll save my thoughts on the more negative aspects of the system, it’s strongarm psychological tactics, and my own lines in the sand for the end of the post.
The jewels are spent on various things, but mostly on loot boxes of “emblems” - jpegs of characters from the mainline series (which, again, our character in the distant past shouldn’t know about, but in this case I’m inclined to write it off as a non-diagetic game abstraction rather than guessing at possible in universe explanations). The emblems have stats and special abilities attached to them, that you access by equipping them to up to slots on your keyblade, with stronger emblems taking up more of a limited ‘cost’ stat. You unlock and augment keyblade slots (but not cost limits) by leveling the keyblade up, which itself requires particular materials.
The emblems in tern can level up by feeding them other emblems in what I understand to be relatively standard gotcha game style. Notably some emblems exist only to grant extra experience or abilities to or reduce the equipment cost of the emblems you feed them to.
Your character levels up by collecting lux in missions, but that doesn’t directly improve any of your stats. Instead it restores your AP (pay-to-wait style mobile game “energy” that can be depleted by going on missions - though so far the story missions are free) and gets you ‘avatar coins’ - another fake currency - that you spend on Avatar Boards
At first I thought these boards were just for unlocking variant costumes, and thus I didn’t care about them, since my character’s blue outfit is plenty cute enough already, but they’re actually where your base character stat boosts come from
Each board has a track of various boosts that you buy mostly with the avatar coins from leveling up. This is where upgrades to HP, AP, and equipment Cost stats are found. The particular avatar outfit items are obtained via particular nodes on the same board. Of course, some boards cost jewels to unlock, or require special event tickets rather than regular avatar coins to purchase the nodes.
Others are only available for a limited time, so if you aren’t able to unlock the whole board using only in game resources you’ll have to spend real money before the opportunity is gone forever!
.........
And I guess that’s as good a time as any to start talking about strongarm psychological tactics.
This is the first Gatcha style game I’ve played, and will almost certainly be the last, so I have no idea if the techniques used in this game are excessive in comparison to the rest of its genre, but it’s pretty bad here.
First is the sheer quantity of things to buy. There’s Actual Emblems obtained via random loot boxes of course, you can’t just get one you want. Then there’s the emblems you use to level up and evolve other emblems. Then there’s materials to level up your keyblade. Then there’s outfit boards for your avatar, which you can’t even ignore if you don’t care about aesthetic stuff because that’s where your core stats are. Then there’s AP to even play the game at all.
And of course, as you would expect you get a big flood of all of that early on. The plot missions are cheap, they give you more jewels and emblems and whatnot than you need early on, everything goes super fast up front to get you invested, but I’m sure the breaks slowly start to kick in before too long.
There’s daily login bonuses to keep you coming back every day out of a sense of commitment.
There’s a party system encouraging you to group up for raids or whatever, which I’m sure can be a lot of fun for more socially inclined players than me, but I look at it and mostly just see a mechanic to get individual players to bug each other to keep playing and spending money out of obligation to other players rather than to the game itself, like mmo guilds
And that’s before you get to the actual prices...
Jebus Cripes, that’s ludicrous. For reference, a standard loot box of 10 jpegs seems to cost 3000 jewels. $30 friggen dollars. Ridiculous. They actually expect people to buy virtual funbucks in hundreds of dollars at a time, and even if you do it doesn’t even get you 5 loot boxes.
Even if I /was/ inclined to spend any money on this game at all, that would put me right off it. If anyone reading this is considering playing this game, but knows they have trouble with gambling type impulse control issues, I strongly recommend that you stay the hell away from it.
......
Now, don’t get me wrong, so far I’m still having fun so far, but I’m still in that early phase where the game is trying to hook me. I’m generally pretty resistant to this sort of thing, but just to lay out my lines in the sand:
- No spending money. At all. “Oh but people worked hard on the game and” whatever man. Spend money to get over one hump and the game will just put another in front of you. And again, those prices are absolute nonsense.
- No grinding/waiting. The first time I reach a point in the game where I want to progress but can’t because of a timer or needing to grind while the game tries to sell me some form of progress as a purchase, I’m just out. I’m not here for that.
- No multiplayer. This is less about a moral stand and more that I just don’t expect to be playing this game for very long before the above hard lines prompt me to quit, and I neither want to leave other players hanging nor do I want them bothering me to continue. If somebody happens to see this post and specifically invites me to party up knowing that I’m probably not long for this game, that’s fine, but otherwise the first time the game requires me to join a party in order to progress, I’m out.
....
But this kind of business is pretty much part & parcel to the mobile games market these days from my understanding, so it’s not like the game is individually abhorrent. And I am still having fun so far, so might as well see how long I far I can take it before the game crosses one of my hard lines and I’m forced to jump ship.
Back to the game, we spend several stages helping one (1) dwarf friend find exactly one (1) other dwarf friend, before heading off to the next disney world. Very little plot progression here, even of snow white land itself. Presumably we’ll be back again later, many times, each time only barely incrementing the narrative progression.
After all, the game needs to be dragged out for many hundreds of missions if they want to keep players around and potentially spending money for months and years.

Part 12: In the Clouds
The part of the game where Tensho has to complete some finicky and very specific game requirements to progress the story.
If you don’t know what this is about, please refer to this previous post.
[Any new comments by me will be designated by brackets.]
[Oof, this chapter’s one of the messier ones... I’ve cleaned it up a lot from the original LiveJournal post, but it still jumps around a lot in places. Apologies for that.]
Before I get on with the plot of the game, I found some upgrades!
Tensho:
Lv 2 --> 3:
Tenka:
Second listed item, Lv 1 --> 2
Youzen's:
First listed item, Lv 1 --> 2
First listed item, Lv 2 --> 3
Second item listed, Lv 1 --> 2
Second item listed, Lv 2 --> 3
[I uh. Really hope these combinations are still correct as I am unable to test them out in the old saved game I have. I highly recommend upgrading paopei/weapons whenever you can because it helps to make all future battles significantly easier.]
Oh, I forgot to mention before, but you should have gotten a few equipable items by now. Those are marked with stars (in the item description) in the inventory menu:
You can equip them to characters by selecting the third “word” in the menu screen:
Some equipment items affect certain stats, while some I guess negate status ailments. If you don't know Japanese, then finding out the effects pretty much comes down to trial and error. (I won't be listing the specific effects of all the equipable items--Sorry!)
Cavechan was nice enough to translate the character stat screen for us in part 1, so that should be a big help when you're messing around with equipment. (Thank you again to Cavechan!)
In the end, I had to equip Tenka with an item to boost his attack because it was pathetically weak.
Also, I've recently found out that you can't use HP-restoring potions on doushi/senin. I have no idea why this happens. This means that if you want to heal these characters while in a dungeon, you have to use a character that has a healing move. Man, that's going to be annoying in a pinch.
Anyway, time for more level grinding in the Houshindai!
I will only be unlocking two senins in the Houshindai today because the monsters on the lower floor are getting harder and harder to beat.
Another of the Juunisen, and In Hon's master. His name's Seki Seishi. (Also, he apparently talks A LOT.)
I also unlocked In Cho's master! (Kou Seishi)
Their bonus is:
They both sell things for something other than cash. One seems to sell potions while the other just sells combo upgrades. I suppose it’s decently useful?
While training in the Houshindai, I messed around with some of Youzen’s new moves.
After having beaten Chou Koumei (yet again), Youzen can now transform into him (4th move, second option.)
Sadly, you only have one attack Chou Koumei (a whip-like attack) and it frankly sucks because it does such a small amount of damage. I think this form is balanced out with all the supporting moves you have at your disposal, though I admittedly never utilized Chou Koumei’s form much.
And oooh, the 60 EP move (unlocked from the cutscene between Youzen and Gyokutei) allows Youzen to go into yokai form!
His ultimate attack (costing 40 EP) does A TON of damage.
(For reference, I was only doing about 1000 points of damage with Tensho and Tenka at this stage in the game.)
Anyway, time to head to the new location, finally. It looks to be someplace up in the clouds?
Hmm, that kid looks familiar...
Hey, it's kid-Tensho!
...Wait, what?
Yeah, this is actually all just an illusion. Those treasure chests scattered about are actually real, but you’ll have to find a way to get to them yourself because... Well, you’ll see why soon enough.
After the short convo, kid-Tensho beckons you to follow him, and he’ll move a few steps along some kind of invisible path. You have to follow kid-Tensho’s steps EXACTLY. Otherwise you'll fall off the clouds (Hitou saves you from falling to your death) and have to re-do the path all over again. This “invisible path” is ridiculously long, which is why they included a guide in the form of kid-Tensho. You have to follow him about six times. You can save at any time in this area; so if you're the type that has trouble following an exact path, then you might want to save in the middle so you don’t have to keep restarting all the way at the beginning if you make a mistake.
Also, don't follow too closely behind kid-Tensho, otherwise you might accidentally walk ahead too far when he turns. This happened to me many, many times. [I’m not going to give a guide on how to grab any of the treasure chests in this area, because honestly; I haven’t been able to figure out how to grab most of the chests myself.]
After all of that trouble, Tensho finds himself in a quant little village in the clouds. (It's actually a small village on top of a very high mountain, if you've read the manga.)
I'm going to just say this now for lack of a better place to bring it up: when you exit, you'll immediately leave the place. (You won't have to go through the invisble path in reverse or anything.) But you'll have to do the walkway “puzzle” again every time you try to visit the village. Really quite annoying. The next time you arrive, you'll be given three options on how to do the puzzle--slow, medium, or fast. This refers to how quickly kid-Tensho walks along the path. If you have amazing memory and want to save time, then you can choose the medium or fast option. I always go with slow, because it's the turns that get me...
The cameos in this village include:
The Village Chief guy with a strong aura.
And surprisingly, an un-possessed Chuu Ou. I have no idea how he got here or even what he’s doing here, but I get the feeling Shinkyohyo had a hand in this somehow.
And of course, there’s Taijou Roukun (a.k.a. Roushi) sleeping amongst the sheep.
[Alright, this part... You’re supposed to talk to Taijou Roukun but he’s not an easy guy to get in contact with, as he’s almost always asleep. Even now I still don’t know the EXACT requirements on how you activate the next part of the game’s plot, but I have figured out a rough guideline... sorta.
Talk to EVERYONE in this location ONCE.
Yes, even the sheep. But ONLY once. If you talk to the same sheep twice by accident, the next cutscene won’t activate. This is an extremely specific set of requirements, I know.]
After having talked to everyone and every sheep ONCE, go up to Taikou Roukun and try talking to him. After the usual sleeping noises Roushi makes, Tensho will say something.
I "think" after doing EVERYTHING you possibly can do, Tensho figures it out and does the same thing Taikoubou did to talk to Roushi... Sleep.
No BGM plays in this mini-cutscene. That means important stuff. Too bad I can't read Japanese. You're given two different dialogue choices in a row. I don't think it really has much effect on the storyline, but I don’t have any real way of confirming that (due to my lack of Japanese language knowledge).
[I have no idea what this says but it’s probably important.]
In case you're wondering, I just went with the first choices for both “choose your dialogue” moment in the convo with Roushi. In this game, the first choice tends to be the better one, it seems.
After that mini-cutscene...
Hey, you're--!
Nentou Doujin! (By the way, his BGM is AWESOME.) Talk to him, and you’ll get treated to a loooong conversation. After that, leave Taijou Roukun’s place. The dot over Mount Kongrong’s location should be flashing, and all your party members will be gone. Don’t worry--this is only a temporary thing.
To continue the plot of the game, you'll have to bring Soushou along to the village in the clouds. (His room is the back right one, on the first floor.) Then head back to talk to Nentou. I can’t remember if it was ever officially confirmed (or if I’ve already mentioned it in this guide), but Nentou is Soushou’s master.
After another long convo, Soushou stays behind, I guess to train under Nentou. You get the rest of your party members back here.
Like master, like disciple.
BONUS MATERIAL TIME (a.k.a. some extra stuff that I didn’t know where to put so it’s going in this post whoop whoop)
At this point in the game, some locations on the overworld have changed a bit. If you go back to the water cave area (the one with all the arrows), you'll find Sengyoku and Dokouson there now.
I have NO idea why they're even standing here. Maybe to guard the place? Maybe because Sengyoku thinks that it's a romantic spot?
Anyway, if you want to initiate a rather humorous scene; first have youzen transform into this:
Second, talk to Dokouson.
In case you're wondering who Youzen just transformed into, it's Hekiun, one of Ryuukitsu's disciples.
Dokouson starts drooling over her and his wifey gets mad.
There’s some pounding noises and the screen shakes.
You can also now find Mokutaku and Kintaku at the old battlefield area.
It took me a long time to figure this out, but Tenka’s “action button” allows him to bust through certain walls:
Apparently the one-off “Tenka as a construction worker” joke from the manga was so funny to the game creators that they included a special face portrait of Tenka in a hardhat.
Anyway, if you head back to Tensho’s hometown after finishing the Taijou Roukun cutscene, you’ll be given a lot of dialogue choices if you talk to the villagers. This doesn’t seem to do anything too important.
But if you choose the second dialogue option on one of the old men, he begins frantically running around the whole town. It's... somewhat amusing in a morbid kind of way.
The old dude freaking runs at the speed of light. I had to block him like this to get a screenshot of him.
Going back to Genshitenson's place briefly...
A grave has been built for him. I think Hakutsuru built it?
Inside Geishitenson's hut, if you look at the right pot at the back of the room, Hitou will say something. THIS IS IMPORTANT. He doesn't do it when you look at the other pot (on the left) so you know something's up. We will return here later.
[That’s all for this post. I hope you guys enjoyed it, despite it being a bit of a mess.]
To be continued.

Black LIVES Matter
This title may seem slightly off-base from our country’s latest event of current news in race relations, but this is something I’ve been meaning to put together for quite some time and haven’t been able to until now. Needless to say, this is going to be pretty exhaustive. The latest events that happened in Charlottesville have added some nuance to the situation, as well as deepened my understanding and strengthened my conclusions. There’s a lot to say and a lot of different angles to take, most of which only add fuel to the flame. This is because the issue at hand is so emotionally centered that most people’s initial response is one purely of emotion; though at first hand this seems admirable, because the human heart is so unreliable it is actually just counterintuitive. The people who act out of hate are simply acting on a dangerous emotion of the human heart. Don’t get me wrong, there is great pain when it comes to the topic, but for one to respond with the feelings associated with the natural gut reaction to the horror we see puts one in a very precarious position. Your only logical progression will be for you to end up reacting with the same dangerous emotion. To let your feelings dictate your response leaves you prone to hatred. If you are perpetually emotional towards these scenarios, you WILL hate! And by now the majority of us surely realize just how illogical that is. But as I get started, it sadly appears to me that far too many still just don’t get this.
Now before you question me on how I could so easily separate emotion from this issue, let me stop you, because that’s not what I’m saying at all. In the last paragraph notice how I said, “If you are perpetually emotional towards these scenarios, you WILL hate!” The problem I’m pointing out is not that we get emotional about racism, but that we remain emotional about racism. Out of some self described righteous indignation we feel entitled to rage against the moral failures and despicable acts of others. Yeah, it makes sense, it does. At least in the most juvenile sense possible, it makes sense. But that’s the thing, it’s childish! And it’s foolish! We are going to get upset about bigotry, we will, but we cannot act on that emotion. This is because, as James 1:20 (AMP) says, “The [resentful, deep-seated] anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God [that standard of behavior which He requires from us].” Instead, we can only act on what we know is true. Truth transcends emotion. It’s much more natural for a human to be emotional than truthful. It is so difficult to look at this objectively, but we must view it this way if we want there to be any improvement. In Psalm 11, verse 3 we find these words, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” The answer to that question is at the beginning of the verse, the righteous must restore the foundations where men have destroyed them. To restore and continue in that which is right we must return to the truth of the matter! So let me share with you a few things that are true.
1. You are angry! I am angry! Believe me I am angry. We are all angry! Well, anyone with their eyes opened at least a quarter of the way is angry. Here, though wrong (because we are incapable of righteousness on our own), anger seems to be the only reasonable reaction. We find it absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary to rid ourselves of our “admissible” malice, because after all we’re right. The guilty party is wrong. And anyone who doesn’t express how right the people with the right view are and how wrong the guilty are, are wrong too. And anyone who doesn’t express how right the people with the right view are and how wrong the guilty are, in the correct amount or manner that we believe they should, are wrong too. Whoa, that jump was a little extreme, wasn’t it?! And yet, that is it exactly what everyone and his brother, mother, and significant other is doing! Somehow we forget, and even a good number don’t believe, that we ourselves are personally capable of committing the same evil acts that literally every single other human has committed. We are all so much more alike than we are different, and the same goes for this idea of what we’re capable of. Given the correct circumstances, anyone of us could commit crimes the likes of Hitler, Stalin, Mao, etc. Perhaps you find that comparison a bit severe, but I had to take it to the maximum intensity in order for you to get where I’m coming from. Let me start by being honest about myself, and I hope you’ll follow suit. I am completely capable of racism. I am completely capable of bigotry. I am completely capable of favoritism. I am completely capable of divisiveness. I am completely capable of hate. In fact I know I’m guilty of a number of these. In a word, because I’m capable of evil, I am evil. Forgive me if you disagree, but all of this is true for each and every one of us, not just me. We’d like to think that we’re all inherently good, and that doing wrong is the exception, but (without going too far down that rabbit trail) that’s simply not consistent with reality.
“As it is written and forever remains written, “There is none righteous (none that meets God’s standard), not even one.” Romans 3:10
2. Okay, let’s get back to my title, Black LIVES Matter. I remind you, curb your emotions, because I can see several different groups getting upset about a few of the things I’m about to say. Let me first make it clear, actually, ALL lives matter! This is true; it’s not up for debate. Nor is it shameful to make this statement, as some are making it out to be. It’s true, and it’s okay for you to say, but it does happen to be beside the point. I’ll explain… We need to approach every aspect of existence with the assumption that life is valuable. Whether it’s in correlation to ethnicity, disability, or unborn children. I may have just smacked a hornet’s nest, but I’m still speaking the truth and if you’re peering through the lens of reality, not sentiment, there’s no legitimate rhyme or reason for you to disagree. With that being said, to act like the term “black lives matter” is unnecessary and offensive is completely ridiculous. “All lives matter” and “black lives matter” are virtually interchangeable phrases. As well are the phrases “brown lives matter”, “yellow lives matter”, “red lives matter”, “white lives matter”, and simply “lives matter”. So yes, “All Lives Matter” as well as “Black Lives Matter” are both true and acceptable to say. To get up in arms at anyone for either one, though you have your reasons, is just well, emotional. It’s a symptom of childish offense. Being upset about not being categorically included is petty and pointless. Being upset about people being upset for the previous reason is petty and pointless as well. On top of that, the reason that the term, idea, and even organization BLACK Lives Matter even originated is that systematically, historically a specific group of people, African Americans, has been mistreated and dehumanized throughout our country’s entire existence. That’s undeniably true. A large majority of this group does still feel marginalized and they’re simply attempting to make people aware. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that! Many supporters of this idea are promoting it without violence or emotion. But it cannot be left unsaid that there are certainly organized elements of the movement that are acting on their unreliable emotions, resulting in their commitment of acts of violence. That is uncalled for, unwise, and unacceptable! I, at least at a surface level, get it, but that is not the answer. Because I am not personally experienced here, I’m going to leave that at that. I cannot speak beyond the logic. Have one more look back at my title, Black LIVES Matter, the reason I have “lives” in all caps is that life is what is at stake, which is the important thing! The reason I use the word “black” instead of “all” is because, though all lives matter, it is this people group that have the unfortunate necessity to question whether or not those around them think their specific lives matter!
“Do we not all have one Father? Has not one God created us?...” Malachi 2:10
3. White supremacist groups exist in our country even to this day. Obviously. And their ideas are still much more alive than many of us of realized. This is what we witnessed in Charlottesville several days ago. Neo-Nazis, the KKK, and their acolytes all gathered together for a protest. What exactly were they protesting? There’s really no answer to that question. This extremely troubled group of people feel like they have been left unheard, and they are angry about it. They have allowed their emotions, fueled by baseless prejudices, to take control of them. Hate has consumed them! Their corrupt notions of racial superiority mingled with their feelings have resulted in a horrifyingly obscene display! What transpired was nothing short of a riot. It got so disgustingly out-of-control that Heather Heyer, an extremely admirable and innocent woman, lost her life at the hands of a rampaging terrorist! The man is deeply troubled, he is so detestably wrong, he deserves justice, but he also needs help. Everyone must do his part to denounce the evil that exists, but as I’ve spoken of before, we must do it with the recognition that it easily could’ve been us! If we’re truly honest with ourselves, we cannot claim to be better. Besides, look what is happening when we respond out of self-righteous rage... Certain people are retaliating with the same type of violence! The people of Antifa, etc. have shown themselves to be no better in the midst of their belief that they are. Violence and hatred toward the violent and hateful is violent and hateful. It feels justified, but it quite frankly isn’t! So yeah, one side is to blame for initializing the incitement and the tragic loss. No one’s arguing against that! But there were certainly several groups that negatively contributed. It’s just true. Yes, motives were different and only one side clearly has race relations right, but angry violence is unacceptable from whoever exhibits it! Now let me briefly address the myriad of people who are criticizing President Trump for not speaking out in the way that you desire… I understand what your plight is, that the leader of our nation ought to immediately, eloquently, and intensely criticize these groups. I agree. But I also do think the president is trying. Feel free to disagree with him, I do on several things, but I don’t think anyone has the right to judge his motives or the state of his heart. According to James 4:12 (AMP), God’s word says, “There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and to destroy [the one God who has the absolute power of life and death]; but who are you to [hypocritically or self-righteously] pass judgment on your neighbor?” You may not like it, but when it comes to this, that’s the end of the matter. In case I haven’t made it clear enough yet, once again: White supremacy is completely unacceptable! It has no place anywhere! It is inconsistent with reality and completely void of morality! It is awful, nasty, and vile! But there is only one effective response, one of reason and peace. Each one of us is only responsible for our own reaction and subsequent action.
“What leads to quarrels and conflicts among you? Do they not come from your (hedonistic) desires that wage war in your members (fighting for control over you)? You are jealous and covet (what others have) and your lust goes unfulfilled; so you murder. You are envious and cannot obtain (the object of your envy); so you fight and battle. You do not have because you do not ask (it of God).” James 4:1-2 (AMP)
4. Love is rooted in truth. There is only one source of truth. God is the source of truth. God is the very essence of truth. God is truth. God is also love. So love is truth. Throughout the Bible, once you are reconciled to God through his grace, we are shown that to exemplify, extend, and multiply love is what it takes to fulfill the will of the Father. Through a relationship with Christ, God intends and does equip and enable every true follower of His with everything they need in order to walk in love for their Lord and for everyone around them! With that in mind I say the following things: I love white supremacists! I detest what they stand for and do. I love the violent opposers! I detest what they do. I love the violent members of the Black Lives Matter movement! I detest what they do. I love corrupt cops that abuse and misuse their power! I detest what they do. I love those who stand up for what is right! I love those who do this and politically disagree with me! I love the misled with good intentions! I love everyone! I don’t always feel like doing this, nor do I always succeed, but love is the truth so I pursue it. And, though I have the facilities to love, because of the fallibility of man I am unable to accomplish loving anyone and loving them well on my own. As Matthew 19:26 says, “With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Only through the transforming, restoring, and redemptive power of Christ is anyone ever able to truly love and accomplish the change needed to eradicate the world of hate and all other wicked forms of evil! I choose to love because I choose to be consistent with truth! I will love by listening to all points of view when it comes to whatever issue, correcting where correction is needed, assisting where assistance is needed, and comforting where comfort is needed! So should you if you want to walk in what is right and what is real. Let dealing with the truth in love be what dictates your motives, decisions, and responses.
“Love does no wrong to a neighbor. Therefore (unselfish) love is the fulfillment of the Law.” Romans 13:10
“For the whole Law (concerning human relationships) is fulfilled in one precept, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (that is, you shall have an unselfish concern for others and do things for their benefit).” Galatians 5:14 (AMP)
There really is only one answer to the issue at hand. His name is Jesus! Even the most optimistic individual is prone to anger, hatred, cynicism, and sharpness. The only thing that will truly satisfy our souls and heal our great divide is a relationship with the God of Love! The one and only Creator of all things. You and I belong to Him and He loves us all equally! May He draw you near and extend His many blessings to you today!

Can an insurer refuse me insurance because of a secondary drivers record?
I am a new driver, I am now insured with a different company but am not happy with how much I am paying. Now, When I first got my vehicle I did a quote with a different insurance company, I was pleased with the cost of insurance, so I decided to try to go ahead with their insurance policy. It took 12 days for this company to contact me back, that's only because I called them questioning about the progress. Now the wait didn't bother it is the fact that the refused me. I know that as an insurance company they have the right to refuse an insurance policy, but it was the EXCUSE they gave me that infuriated me. Now let explain the situation as clearly as I can. I am a new driver, I am still living with my dad so I was obligated to put him onto my insurance plan because we are living int he same building and both have access to my car, as a new driver I have 0 tickets, 0 cancellations of insurance (have had previous insurance for a motorcycle with the same company) and I must also put 0 experience. now my dad has over 30 years driving experience, but he had 1 ticket in the past 3 years. So this is what the insurance company said to me on the phone, We are refusing your policy because you are a new driver, and your secondary driver has had 1 ticket in the past 3 years. Me, and my father both think that this is just an excuse to not insure a new driver. I am insured now and have been for the past several months driving everyday to and from work, my insurance is getting a bit costly now and am thinking of trying the other company again. I would like to know, Can the insurance company refuse me for those reasons? And would you recommend trying that company again after a few months have past or try to find cheaper insurance elsewhere?""

What does Enterprise car rental insurance cover?
We rented a car for a week and we got the basic coverage for our rental car. Yesterday we stopped at a crosswalk when we saw two people and were then hit full speed by a pickup truck. It totaled the rental car and thankfully were are ok. As we were sitting there it was told to us that a witness said there was no one at the crosswalk when it happened and the witness filled out a report. I know what I saw and it hurts that people would be so dishonest. By the end of it the officer said no citation would be issued. I think the police are going to say it was my fault for stopping to quickly. I think that's ridiculous but anyway. If I have the basic car rental insurance and they say its my fault, will the rental insurance cover all that? Thanks for any responses. I am still shaken up!""

My father passed away on Jan, 5th 2013. He has a paid in full policy amounting to $100k. When we figured out that my mother (his ex wife) was left the sole benifecary, we filed a claim. The insurance provider (John Hancock) denied our claim based off of a CA law that states if the claimant had been divorced, they essentialy get nothing. However, it clearly states in their dissalution of marriage, that life insurance should not be affected. Something in lieu of insurance?
I have been working part-time for a company and about to become full-time. One of the concerns that was raised is that insurance will be expensive. He pays 100% of everyone's insurance for their families. I suggested that we can revisit the insurance in a year and do something else in lieu of the insurance. Less costly. He also pays for parking for the employees. I'm not sure of what to ask for though. I was thinking a gas allowance but I wanted to have a few ideas to present in case he shoots one or more down.

Considering suing my car insurance company?
As we all know car insurance companies in the United States of America charge males more than females to drive a car based on real world studies . This is the equivalent of not hiring females because they may get pregnant and take a lot ofdays off... Because this is truly a real world study i conducted that males dont get pregnant as often as females. So I am highly tempted to bring this up with a lawyer or at least send a letter to my car insurance company, and i want them to hurt for it because frankly it pisses me off that i am being descriminated against. Further more, in europe, this practice of charging males more because they are more likely to drive is highly illegal. I am in no way a liberal democrat but if this sensitivity bullshit is going to stop descrimination than maybe they should give a **** about me before i start caring about them...""

How much should I expect to spend on full coverage auto insurance on a 2013 Cadillac Escalade ESV Platinum?
I am 15 years old, my grandfather is buying me a 2013 Cadillac Escalade ESV Platinum ($85,000 MSRP) for my 16th birthday. My mom told me she would only put $200 per month towards insurance and I want full coverage. I know I will have to get a job to cover the rest of the insurance but I'd like to know a range of what other people are paying for theirs. The car is going to be in my mom's name who has never had a ticket or accident and I will be on her insurance policy, does that help? I know nobody can tell me for sure what my insurance rates would be, so can you at least tell me what yours are (if you have a Cadillac Escalade ESV)?""
What will my insurance do?
So the other day a car slammed on their brakes and I hit their bumper. It was a Mercury Sable. Not sure the year right now...prob 98-02. It was a young girl and her 4 friends. They were obviously under the influence of weed. They of course did not want to call the cops. I said ok because I did not want a ticket or my ins rates to go up. We exchanged names and numbers. She called and my husband and I arranged that we would pay for half of the damages. Today she called and said her estimate was $870!! I only cracked her bumper...what should I do? Can I still file a police report? What will my insurance do if I go through them now? Thanks!!

Can my mom insure my car she does not own (California)?
So I am 21 and have a car with a learners permit and I wont get a license until Jan. Can my mom insure the car even though her name is not on the registration until I get my license and will then be the primary driver? In this case I would only be driving with her under the learners permit guidelines. My mom would be driving the car on a daily basis to take my little sister to school and stuff because right now it's our family's only car. In Jan. I would have the insurance put under my name and have her added as a driver.

HAIKU HANDS - NOT ABOUT YOU [7.12] Let's get bratty...
Will Adams: What it is about: the thwacking intro from Onuka's latest stormer, brattiness distilled from decades of the stuff, from Gillette to Icona Pop, the brashness of M.I.A.'s underrated Maya and, lest you get too serious about it all, the enduring credo of "CHIIIIIIIILL." [9]
Claire Biddles: Bratty shout-a-longs are best when their attitude is met with charm, and "Not About You" has heaps of attitude and heaps of charm: in its wild rhymes ("I'm going to tear up the lexicon with a hexagon and my sexy thong on"!!) and their delivery; heavily accented and with just the right amount of comic timing. This sits between "Mind Your Own Business" by Chicks On Speed and "Trouble" by Shampoo on my getting-ready-to-go-out playlist and it has already served as the precursor of innumerable nights of dancing and shouting and drinking cheap white wine, which I think Haiku Hands would deem appropriate. [9]
Tim de Reuse: Sounds like a bunch of friends having a blast, and it's infectious; the occasional sections where it sounds like they're just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks ("I'm gonna kick your arse...") are far outweighed by lines like "You look like a tortoise / Your issues are enormous," which is possibly the most fucking incredible rhyme I've heard in my entire life. [7]
Alfred Soto: Imagine Tom Tom Club or the Raincoats over the crummiest drum program they could find. "You look like a tortoise/Your issues are enormous" is funny because it's true and funny because it's funny. "Not About You" should be twelve minutes long. [7]
Iain Mew: I haven't heard something new like this since the UK industry decided to pretend The Ting Tings never happened. I'd welcome the return even if Haiku Hands didn't bring even more scrappy energy and such great brags and threats to kick arse. [7]
Katie Gill: I mean it's cute? But cute can only go so far, especially when the song just seems too juvenile. The way of singing (cheering?) is a schoolyard chant that occasionally matches the schoolyard chant lyrics. The beat just sounds basic and dull, like someone just discovered this fun setting on the keyboard to use. I'm certain that if you're drunk and screaming along with it then this is the best song in the world, and I can see why this would have appeal. But then again, I thought the Ting Tings were just okay when they first came on the scene as well. [5]
Nortey Dowuona: Bouncy, echoey drums, rubbery and light of foot bass bounce together with scatterings of synths and bubbles and noises as Haiku Hands hi-five, dap and secret handshake across the beat. [6]
Brad Shoup: I thought they were laying the shut ups too softly, but the track's less shit-talk than trash talk. It's nearly as posi as prime youth crew, but the punks couldn't rhyme. [6]
Jonathan Bradley: Haiku Hands give 2017 its own update of Confidence Man, but while the electro thunk remains rudimentary, the sass is more fun this time around. You can go a long way with a Fight Like Apes-level couplet like "you look like a tortoise/your issues are enormous." [6]
Ian Mathers: Some of the lines are a bit whiffed, but that infectious chorus chanting (complete with plenty of slight shifts in meter) redeems a multitude of sins. Which is why the middle here, where they go too long without it, drags a little. It's no "I Love It," but what is? [6]
Maxwell Cavaseno: It's a sign of the times really. The 00s version of white-girl electro-rap was all about the ironic detached nihilism pose of Uffie where everything was like, the coolest post-Kittin bomb-out of sick parties that sounded both more glamorous and more sordid than the hollow reality of what actually happened. Now, in the 2010s, we get a hollow sort of ideological boasting, solidarity as pep rally which is meant more as some kind of shield rattle than any offer of strength or genuine unity. You can hear in its industrial pulse, the grinding and pressing of many a "Queen of ___" meme ready to be imposed and impressed on any subject regardless of worth or merit, just to say they can. Frankly, one would just hope the music might do something a little different between then and now as well. [2]
William John: I suspect my submission of a blurb for this song contravenes its titular tenet. But I thought it worth mentioning that an aesthetic of "zippy shout-a-long to something that scans like a sped up instrumental of M.I.A. and Afrikan Boy's 'Hussel'" is one I wholeheartedly support. [8]
Will Rivitz: It's the last week of the semester where I'm at, and stress is approaching untenable levels. This song's making me want to throw my textbooks on the library floor and stomp out, making as big a ruckus as I can. It's impossible to put into words how unreasonably humongous this song is - try to encompass it in any manner and it immediately bursts the seams of whatever you're futilely attempting to contain it with. This grabs all the best elements of Justice, Erol Alkan, Boys Noize, Shiny Toy Guns, and really anyone else who caused a nuclear reaction by fusing synthpop and electro, and shoots them into the stratosphere with the force of a cannonball. [9]
Rebecca A. Gowns: At last, we get 2017's very own Gravy Train!!!! Fun as hell and makes me feel 15 years younger. (And then, like an ancient crone, I have to stop my frenetic dancing when I start wheezing for breath.) [9]
Stephen Eisermann: "212" by Azealia Banks without the lyrical bite, but just as fun to dance to. I haven't wanted to go to a gay club in quite some time, but now all I want to is drink too much, pop something I shouldn't, and get sweaty on a dance floor with my boyfriend. [8]
Julian de Valliere: The past two years have been an amazing time (at least in terms of quality) for pop music, but they've also been a not-entirely-stellar time for me. I'm gay, brown, and fighting every day to somehow crawl out of this homophobic hellhole of a country that I so foolishly decided to get born into. This means that I spend a good part of my time retreating into frothy pop tunes that can afford me some respite from what's typically an emotionally exhausting day. It also means that when it comes to the media I consume, I don't really subscribe to the idea of separating the person from the product. Needless to say, it's been fairly garbage having to accept just how little pop stars care about the things that matter to me. As the planet reveals itself to be even bleaker than I imagined, songs that previously brought me comfort have become tainted by the actions - or inaction - of the people performing them. New releases don't fare any better. No matter how desperately I need to escape into those earworms, the voice at the back of my head just won't let me forget how one-sided these relationships are. And it stings. It stings because I have no fond memories left, it stings because I can't make new ones, it stings to watch other people enjoy these songs unphased, because they have these beautiful, vibrant, synth-heavy safe spaces to escape into and I don't, because whenever I try to step inside, I can only notice how the guest list has my name directly below the host's favourite homophobe. And every tweet, stream, download, and new chart peak reminds me that I'm in a spectacular minority of people being affected by this, and it's so intensely isolating that I'm still not entirely sure how to put it into words. So yes, that's not ideal. And at the same time, I know I'm not the only person having a rough time. There are so many people who aren't being spoken for, who maybe I haven't even thought of myself, and being aware of that stings too. And that's what makes all this kumbaya bullshit being peddled by supposedly progressive acts so infuriating. No one should have to sit down and have a meal with someone who'd rather just spit in their drink. If someone's being wilfully ignorant, they don't deserve a seat at the table. They don't even deserve a polite "just so you know" in a corner of the room. They deserve to be told to shut the hell up, as forcibly and loudly as possible, preferably with a megaphone involved, until the entire building reverberates with the shock of just how wrong they are. And that's what "Not About You" does. I know Haiku Hands aren't singing for me either, but I'm so ridiculously glad that at least a few other people have been given somewhere to run to whenever they need it. And I'm also glad it's such a full throttle banger, because if you need the defence that Haiku Hands put up, god knows you deserve some fun too. [10]

In fact, the Trouble Spot Fat Loss program is so complete we are even giving you for FREE our Hormone Balancing Meal Plan so you can…
Did you know there is ONE hormone in your body that has a direct impact on your ability to build muscle and burn fat from your trouble spots? This hormone is so powerful that when out of balance it will affect other hormones in your body making fat loss impossible.
This is because hormonal issues rarely operate in isolation- they are all connected. For this reason, it is important to address the one master hormone that can impact all others.
When this one hormone is out of balance it interferes with the function of other essential hormones. This can result in insulin and thyroid resistance, estrogen imbalance, progesterone deficiencies, and even testosterone fluctuations.
Yes, balancing this ONE hormone is that critical for your health and losing your trouble spot fat.
Because of this, my nutritionist created a hormone balancing meal plan that will help reset this important hormone and put your body back into hormonal balance so you can start burning off your most stubborn trouble spot fat.
The delicious meals in this program will help you to bring your hormone levels into balance creating a fat burning effect like you have never experienced before. Plus, you will do this while eating all your favorite foods.
This isn’t some silly crash diet or fasting plan that has you eating once every 2 days. With “The Hormone Balancing Meal Plan” each meal is simple to prepare and contains the perfect balance of nutrients, carbs, proteins, vitamins and healthy fats. Not only do these meals taste incredible they are also going to help you balance your hormones and burn an incredible amount of fat.
Plus, you will be happy to know that these delicious meals and snacks take just minutes to prepare!
As busy parents of twins, my wife and I simply don’t have the time to waste making elaborate recipes and it is very important to us that we only eat healthy, hormone friendly foods.
That’s why you are going to love these tasty, easy to prepare, fat burning, hormone balancing recipes that can be prepared by anyone at anytime.
