Turnsgiving Day 6: Underrated character
Nathaniel Tallmadge (Benjamin Tallmadge Sr. historically) is absolutely amazing and I wish we got more of him than just season 1. If Robeson and DeJong could reoccur, so could he.
Everything about him, the way he makes Hewlett flinch while having the calmest voice. How he is completely collected around an unhinged Simcoe. And the way he calls Abe out on the war stories and then Hewlett. He knows he could face hanging, and still made a statement which I just a formidable move.
You can see some of the traits Ben picked up in that scene. Compare this to Ben's speech in 1.03 to the mutineers and Newt. How he later says "I'll take the court martial" because he stands on his principals like his father.
Historically, Tallamdge Sr. taught students to prepare for college, and that included Ben. Keep in mind, Ben was deemed fit to attend by the president of Yale when he was 12/13. His father kept him back until he was 15 so he'd at a better age to attend. In Ben's own words, "my father determined to give me the opportunity to obtain a liberal education."
In the show, he's a veteran seeing his own sons go to war, one of them dying and the other having several brushes with death. I'm sure he learned about the massacre in the pilot episode, of Ben's troops.
And another quote about him, this time during the war is , "I obtained permission to visit my father at Brookhaven, on my way to New York, and I shall not soon forget his surprise at seeing me dressed in military uniform, with epaulets on my shoulders and a sword by my side. Although he was a firm and decided Whig of the revolution, yet he seemed very reluctant to have me enter the army."
He deserved so much screen time and needed far more interactions with Ben. Because I head-canon him as being an amazing father and I wish TURN gave us more of that.
