“and a christmas present, too? alright, well… under any other circumstances, i wouldn’t accept one gift for two separate occasions, but i’ll let it slide, make an exception, but only this time. only because it’s probably gonna cost us more than a ferrari in the long run,” he teases with a laugh, pretending to be a snob solely in hopes of coaxing more of these adorable, heartwarming giggles out of poppy. she knows him too well to believe he’s being serious and so he lets himself joke like this. but then his features soften again, his gaze alternating between analyzing the two pink lines that have just flipped his world upside down and his wife’s beautiful face, memorizing this moment. “no, with all seriousness, baby… you’re making my dreams come true. this is the best present you could ever give me.” eyes stinging all over again, he just can’t keep his emotions at bay today.
luckily for him and what’s left of his pride, an idea pops into his head and distracts him for a moment. hands patting his jeans until he’s pulling out his phone. “we’ll set everything up and take fancy pictures later,” he promises, eager to document every second of this journey, “but i want to remember this ‘cause it’s the best day of my life. smile, mommy,” he coos sweetly, snapping a bunch of beautiful, candid photos of his pregnant wife. it never fails to amaze him how easily she outshines even the highest paid supermodels, how she’s a natural, looks stunning from every angle, with or without makeup. so ethereal. if they didn’t mean to keep the big news a secret for a little longer, he’d change his lock screen to one of these pictures immediately. god, she really is glowing.
“monday it is, then.” school’s out for the holidays so it really is the perfect timing. he can focus on her without worrying about work, make the whole day just about poppy. monday. funny, he doesn’t remember the last time he was so excited about a monday. before walking out of the bedroom, he tucks the positive pregnancy tests away, hides them in the top drawer of his nightstand just to keep them safe from lily’s curious eyes and sticky little hands. not that he thinks a six year old can fully grasp the meaning of these items, but still… better safe than sorry. “do you want to give your moma call?” wanda has always been their biggest supporter, and will be over the moon the second she hears about this, alex has no doubts about it. “or should we wait a little longer and surprise her, do something special?” he asks as they walk down the stairs, his heart jackhammering in his chest, lungs fighting for each breath. they’re going to be parents. parents.
it’s the sound of poppy’s voice that finally drags him out of this daze. it’s an unspoken rule — only one of them can be panicking at a time, and so alex does his best to hide his confusion. alarm bells ringing in the back of his head. “i left her on the couch, put frozen on because she loves it so much,” he mumbles, resting his hand on poppy’s shoulder and kissing her cheek, hoping to calm her down. alright. lesson number one about fatherhood. never let a child out of sight. “but she took the hot chocolate? prison break priorities.” he jokes to try and lighten the mood, even if he’s about to lose his mind. if anything happened to lily on his watch, he’d never forgive himself. “wait… she loves when we play hide and go seek, right? she must be hiding somewhere. bet she thinks this is some grand prank.” and so the search begins. alex checks the most dangerous places first — the laundry room, each bathroom, the yard… only to eventually find his niece in the guest bedroom, sipping what’s left of her hot chocolate and doing her makeup with whatever products she’s found in poppy’s bag. apparently, lipstick works great as eyeshadow. wow. “you know… the first thing i’m buying our baby will be an airtag,” he sighs, leaning in and whispering in his wife’s ear. “alright, ladies, beauty break’s over. let’s finish decorating the cookies, shall we?”
a few months ago, in the middle of the summer, poppy and her mother had been having a conversation on their back porch. it was after another round of failed pregnancy tests, alex was inside helping cook. "it'll happen when it's supposed to, sweetheart. maybe you should just take a break for a little while." this wasn't her mom dismissing the fact that there might be something more going on health-wise. she knew better than that. but she also knew her daughter, how the weight of trying to conceive often sat on the shoulders of the wife. "alex has loved you long before the idea of kids was ever seriously turning in his mind, and he'll love you even if you don't have them." the comment only made poppy cry harder, "i know he will. but i want this for him," she paused, knowing her mom would want to hear more than that. "and for me. i wasn't sure about it before: motherhood. but there's no one else who'd make a better dad. he's meant to be one. i want to have one with him."
the rest had gone well enough. or well enough to calm poppy down, to cement that they needed a breather. they needed to be newlyweds who were enjoying their time together. poppy knew her mom was right, and in truth, she did want to just focus on alex for a while. on fixing up the house. summer was the perfect time for renovations. alex had plenty of spare time, they could leave the windows open and spend entire weekends painting or anything else they felt like. she wanted to enjoy her best friend, like they always had. with the added benefit now of being able to kiss him whenever she wanted, or hug him, hold his hand as they walked down the main street of linfield on the first friday of every month. to be his wife.
so as the months progressed, they stopped caring about when she was ovulating. she ate what she wanted and had sex with her husband in such an exploratory way you would have thought they hadn't already been together for a few years; and it was great. resulting in alex's birthday that lasted that day, and night, and the entire weekend afterwards. "it's your birthday and christmas present," she teases back, kissing alex on the cheek sweetly, "i love you so much," before promising she would get to the doctor as soon as possible. "i'll call first thing on monday."
once the shock and celebrating had simmered, poppy's eyes widen. "lily." the pair was quick to head back to their living room, with alex making his way to the kitchen in order to pull the cookies from the oven just as the timer was going off. "alex..." poppy's voice has a noticeable panic to it. "she's not here and it looks like she took the hot chocolate along with her."
