Madeleine Mayes (BA, majoring in Political Science)
Madeleine Mayes (she/her) is a 4th year undergraduate student majoring in Political Science. She enrolled in a CSL course by accident but fell in love with it and wanted to continue doing more. She is currently going forward to work with La Connexional, a social enterprise and creative consulting agency specializing in full-service event management.
Why did you decide to do the csl certificate or course?
I took a class that had a CSL component in it. It was Arec 173. It was online and I had no idea what was going on and everybody had to do it. So I guess it was by accident and afterwards, I loved the idea of getting the certificate because I have always enjoyed volunteering. I also loved the idea of being able to work with a non-profit board through the NPBI Program. This made me more excited to get the certificate and I just ended up doing more CSL classes. So yes, at first it was an accident and then later, I just fell in love with the concept of it.
What was your favourite csl placement, and why?
It was arec 173. As explained earlier, it was an accident. So when we were asked to choose which organization we would like to work with, I ended up choosing Gateway - which is our campus paper. I had heard of it before but I was too shy to go to the Open house and learn about them. I felt like it was meant to be when I ended up working with them for the semester.
It was a little tricky at start as there were 4-5 of us trying to coordinate to write a few articles. But what I enjoyed the most about it was that it got me out of my shell (comfort zone) and got me involved doing something outside my placement. By that I mean I continued working with Gateway even after the courses ended. I am fond of this placement because it forced me to do something I would have never done if it wasn’t a part of my course. They taught us all sorts of journalism techniques which I am grateful for. Soon after I ended up going to a meeting where I was able to use these skills and that got me really excited.
How has CSL impacted your academic and/or personal life?
It has definitely affected my academia as now I am taking classes that are for the CSL certificate. In terms of personal life, CSL has encouraged me a lot and now I doing things outside of school. It is nice to be able to have an environment where you can practice your skills. As a political science student, I have done a lot of work that I have learned through my classes, and I have also done some work outside my classes. Doing social media and campaigns for organizations and being able to put that into practice with organizations and communities, it makes you feel really good. What you are doing is building up to something, if that makes sense.
It is one thing to be able to study how to do things, study how to use acquired and learned skills in classes but it is something entirely different to be able to work with real people and in real life settings.
What was your personal experience with CSL?
It definitely changed some of the ways I used to think about things. Because of CSL, I have really grown to enjoy the nonprofit world, outside the political world which I am doing my Bachelor's in. Having the ability to work with immigrants and learning about things I was not exposed to before was a really eye-opening experience for me.
How would you sum up your experience with CSL in one sentence?
CSL is a great opportunity to grow if you only let yourself embrace that opportunity.

Considerations When Choosing a Magnetic or Hotplate Stirrer
Magnetic and hotplate stirrers aren’t usually the most expensive items in the lab, but they can be some of the most useful. However, there are many types to pick from, and not all will be perfect for your use. As a result, you should carefully analyze your options.
In an earlier post, we highlighted several broad deciding considerations when selecting a stirrer, such as longevity and maintenance. In this section, we look at variables to consider when selecting a magnetic or hotplate stirrer:
Capacity
Safety features
Sample viscosity
Temperature range
Accuracy
Let’s take a look at each of these in turn:
Capability
Capacity is an important consideration when selecting the best magnetic stirrer with hot plate. Surprisingly, certain stirrers can handle relatively huge quantities. The AREX CerAlTopTM Hot Plate Stirrer (below left) can handle up to 20L, and Ohaus Advanced Large Capacity Stirrers (below right) have capacities of 100L or 200L.
Please keep in mind that your stirrer may not be able to handle quantities up to the maximum specified for higher viscosity samples (more on this below).
Security Features
Safety is the most important consideration in any stirring application. This is particularly true when using a hotplate stirrer.
You may come across the following safety features:
Speed ramping: This feature allows you to gradually increase the speed to avoid splashing.
A hot top warning indicator indicates when a hotplate stirrer is hot (usually above 50°C).
Stir protection: If the stirrer motor stops or fails, the heating will turn off immediately.
Probe protection: Similar to stir protection, if the probe disengages from the sample, the heater will turn off.
Current limit protection: This safeguards against high currents that could cause a fire.
High-temperature setting: This function allows you to program the maximum temperature the hotplate can achieve, which is especially useful if you have samples with sensitive flash points.
Safety shields: Available as add-ons for some units, these shields protect against splashes, spills, and aerosols.
Sample Viscosity
When working with viscous materials, your stir bar is more likely to get uncoupled than when working with less viscous samples. Many variables are at play here, including sample size, stirring speed, and the type of stir bar used. When it comes to the stirrer, a stronger magnetic coupling is required to limit the possibility of the stir bar spinning out.
You may think that greater capacity stirrers can manage higher viscosities, however this is not necessarily the case. It all relies on the strength of the drive magnet. VELP Scientifica stirrers, for example, have powerful drive magnets. However, magnetic stirrers are often only suitable for liquids with a low viscosity.
Temperature Range
Of course, for hotplate stirrers, you must guarantee that the temperature is high enough for your application. The MS-H280-Pro Digital Hotplate Stirrer (below left) can reach temperatures of up to 250°C, whilst the AREC Digital Ceramic Hot Plate Stirrer (below right) can reach temperatures of up to 550°C.
Keep in mind that your sample will not reach the maximum temperature of your stirrer, so you’ll need a hotplate stirrer that can give a temperature higher than what your sample requires.
When it comes to temperature, range isn’t the only thing to consider; uniformity may be as well. In terms of plate material, this is where there may be a trade-off. Aluminum plates are more consistent, but ceramic plates are more chemical resistant and easier to clean. However, many plates are constructed of aluminum but have a ceramic coating, allowing you to have the best of both worlds.
Accuracy
When selecting a stirrer, accuracy may not be the first thing that comes to mind, but it can be an essential aspect for some applications, especially if you want to assure repeatability or plan to scale up your operation.
One of the most important considerations to make when it comes to precision is whether to use a digital or analog stirrer, with the latter generally delivering less accuracy.

March 2 2022 Barcelona
Our small group of friends, Inma, Gustavo, Yvonne, Areceli, Claire, and I joined thousands more in Plaza Cataluna this evening for the peace rally. It was truly an anti-war rally against Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and we were all there in solidarity with the people of Ukraine. After listening to the speakers we brought the clothing we had collected to a relief group to bring to the people in Ukraine. These small efforts on our part, combined with those of many others, will hopefully let the Ukrainian people know we are supporting their fight against tyranny and on behalf of democracy.

[The slashes are to prevent this from showing up in any main tags; please disregard.]
There can be so many (weird) takes on Sc///arec///row’s (Jon) fe///ar toxin that can be eprocto fuel.
Something I wrote about ages ago was perhaps Sc///arec///row using Ri///ddler as a guinea pig of sorts. Asking the fellow criminal if he can test a new chemical reaction of his famous fe///ar toxin out. Edward owes him a favor, so of course he accepts. Taking a special pill to save him from the toxin’s mind altering effects, but leaving him with the ability to feel it’s physical effects.
Soon, Edward is pinned down, grunting with the newfound weight. Jon may be thin, but he’s much stronger than the other. Grunting as he settles his ass onto his nose, the scratchy material of his costume making Edward grunt and kick.
“Stay still,” Jon holds onto Edward’s lap for balance. Ignoring the heat in his belly as he feels the effects begin. “This is more of a biochemical matter, I haven’t worked out the problem of producing the gas in a more dignified matter yet.”
“Jon--?”
“I said stay still--” Jon grunts. His ginger hair sticking to his forehead as he pushes what he can out. The heavy feeling in his gut finally bursting as a rumbling low fart is blasted on Edward’s face. The other squirming more as Jon sighs, looking back to make sure Edward is at least still conscious.
‘Bbbbbbbprft’
“How are you feeling, Edward?” Jon moves himself back from the other. His eyebrows furrowed as newfound fresh air greets him. A blessed relief from the disgusting fetid stench. The air around Edward feeling as dense as Jon’s weight upon him. Choking him from the inside out.
“Hurry, I can already feel another dose.”
“Elevated heartbeat,” Edward coughs. He really has to stop asking for favors from Jon, “sweating and cold shivers, I -- get it over with. I can’t tell if its the physical effects or the mere fact you’ve stooped to this level.”
‘Bbbbbbbrrrrpppph’
“How is this even possible?” Edward coughs, Jon lifting himself up once more to allow the criminal to breathe. He can feel the heat of his gas warming the air around Edward’s head. The smell much more concentrated thanks to the tablet he took to deliver these results.
His stomach growls ominously. “How about now, Edward?”
“Shortness of breath, but that can be from the--” another cough. It’s with a sick sense of immature pride that Jon finds himself happy he’s made Edward cough for any and all fresh untainted air. “stench. Heartbeats increasing, pulse quickening, the cold shivers are--”
‘Ffffffrrrbbbbbpppptth’
“--intensifying.” Edward coughs, Jon finally lifting up and allowing the other to sit up. Watching him wave at the air, dispersing what he can away. Clinging to any untainted air. “I say it works. I can’t tell if the means of producing the toxin are more humiliating for your victims or you.”
“A bit of both, would you say so?” Jon sighs, taking notes on his clipboard. “Thank you, Edward. I believe we’re even now.” His brown eyes look up above his glasses, watching the other move with quickened pace. ‘Anything to get away from the smell, I don’t blame him.’
“Why do you need this biochemical way of distributing your toxin? You haven’t lost the latest batch, have you? We have that joint heist together this week.”
“A rather immature joke between The Bat and his Brat convinced me to give it a try. I can’t lug around tanks of toxin forever. If I can simply take a pill and produce the toxin in a more decent manner on command, we can get more done.”
Edward shrugs, still coughing as he rushes to open a window in their hideout. And he thought his own brand of gas was bad.

Arecently leaked memo from House Republicans shows that the GOP is urging its politicians to blame recent mass shootings on the left, while downplaying the role of white supremacy.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, who obtained the memo, the document offers talking points in response to common questions Republican representatives may face after the recent mass shootings.
The paper describes most of the offered responses as "boilerplate Republican arguments against tougher gun restrictions." However, the Times spotlights the answer the memo suggests in response to the question "Do you believe white nationalism is driving more mass shootings recently?"
"White nationalism and racism are pure evil and cannot be tolerated in any form," the document said. "We also can't excuse violence from the left such as the El Paso shooter, the recent Colorado shooters, the Congressional baseball shooter, Congresswoman Giffords' shooter and Antifa."
The El Paso shooter, identified as Patrick Crusius, killed 22 people at a Walmart. In statements to police, Crusius said he was targeting "Mexicans." A manifesto linked with Crusius posted to 8chan ranted against the "Hispanic invasion of Texas" and argued for the murder of Latinx immigrants.

Rise of machines
Rise Of The Machines
It’s been over 35 years since The Terminator was released, and rather than a global moratorium on weaponized robots, we’re instead seeing an explosion of research into autonomous tanks, aircraft, humanoid robots, and AI software systems to pull the trigger.
There’s a grim irony in the fact that a cautionary tale about autonomous killing machines has turned into an arms race to see who can develop them first —and it’s even more ironic that the organizations developing these technologies reference the movie when describing their projects: F.E.D.O.R. — with a gun, but “not a Terminator”.
FEDOR
In arecent tweet, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin described the “Robot platform F.E.D.O.R. showing shooting skills with two hands,” and quickly added, “we are not creating a Terminator, but artificial intelligence that will be of great practical significance in various fields.”
Ostensibly,F.E.D.O.R.has been developed for rescue missions, and the prototype was even sent to the International Space Station to conduct repairs, but as The Independent has written, “military uses have also been suggested by engineers.”
Atlas
Despite internet confusion from a viral hoax video by “BossTown Dynamics”, the realAtlasrobot developed by Boston Dynamics has never fired a gun — but it can run, do backflips, andparkour. Developed under grants byDARPA, this robot is also designed for disaster response, but that didn’t stop ExtremeTech for describing it as a “Real World Terminator”, saying:
At 6’2″ and 330lbs, Atlas is incredibly imposing…while Atlas is initially conceived as a disaster response robot, such as cleaning up and looking for survivors after a Fukushima-like disaster, it’s easy to imagine Atlas being the basis of a robotic army.
TheMIS
Futurism.com described this robotic tank as being “straight out of the Terminator”, and cited aC4ISRNET article indicating that it was equipped with a 12.7mm machine gun & 40mm automatic grenade launcher in a recent demonstration.
Likened to theT-1 robot tankin Terminator 3, theMilrem TheMISis one of many robotic tanks currently under development, including theRipsaw M5 Robo-Tank,Miloš UGV,Gladiator TUGV,Foster-Miller TALON, and many more — all heavily armed, and currently all requiring a human operator to pilot them remotely.
The Predator Drone
The General AtomicsMQ-1 Predatordrone was designed in the ‘90s for reconnaissance, but within a decade the Air Force hadarmed itfor drone strikes, and created theMQ-9 Reaperas a successor — which the USAF Chief of Staff called “a true hunter-killer.”
The Guardian reports thatBritain is funding research into drones that decide who they kill, and of the36 countriescurrently using armed drones, analystPaul Scharresays it’s “very likely that nations will invest in autonomous technology, if nothing else out of fear that their adversaries are doing so.”
Googlebacked out of drone research because of the ethical implications, but it hasn’t stoppedmilitary organizationsfrom pursuing autonomous killing machines, which have the advantage of “freeing current pilots from the moral responsibility of casualties”.
SkyNet
The Terminator franchise wouldn’t be complete without the series arch-villain. As it turns out,SkyNet is already here, and according toArs Technica, it’s already killed “thousands of people”:
“SkyNet engages in mass surveillance of Pakistan’s mobile phone network, and then uses a machine learning algorithm on the cellular network metadata of 55 million people to try and rate each person’s likelihood of being a terrorist.”
Today’s SkyNet is an NSA surveillance program that isn’t self-aware, and it doesn’t directly control weapons systems — unlike the ambitious Strategic Computing project, back whenDARPA Tried to Build Skynet in the 1980s:
“The system was supposed to create a world where autonomous vehicles not only provide intelligence on any enemy worldwide, but could strike with deadly precision from land, sea, and air. It was to be a global network that connected every aspect of the U.S. military’s technological capabilities — capabilities that depended on new, impossibly fast computers.”
Thoseimpossibly fast computersexist today, and DARPA hasn’t given up on the idea, they’ve simply rebranded it “Assured Autonomy”. The goal remains the same: creating systems able to “accomplish goals independently, or with minimal supervision from human operators in environments that are complex and unpredictable.”
Conclusion
As I said in the beginning, all the pieces for Judgement Day are in place. The nukes, the robots, the AI systems —it’s like putting together a jigsaw puzzle, and the only thing missing is a few more years of R&D and the malevolent spark of machine intelligence willing to end the world.
Stephen Hawkingsaid, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race,” andElon Muskconcurred — calling it humanity’s “biggest existential threat”. Both of them may be mistaken, but it begs the larger question:
If AI is dangerously unpredictable, why are we arming it?
Earlier I mentioned “freeing current pilots from the moral responsibility of casualties”, but the truth is they shouldn’t be freed from it. The decision to take a human life has gravity to it — and knowing that you’ll have to live with that choice is part of the decision-making process. It’s called having a conscience, and it’s something machines lack.
Conscience — not calculation — is what kept us from launching the nukes during the 20th century. The ICBMs are ready, but despite 70 years of saber-rattling, the decision to use them is simply too big, ugly & final for us to push the button. So we’re teaching the machines how to do it instead.
To be fair, The Terminator and its sequels were as much a commentary on the time they were produced as they were a warning to the future —but at the root of all these films remains a constant reminder:beware the consequences of giving machines the power to decide life & death.

Agata M-O. Undergraduate Student (Nutrition and Food Science with a Specialization in Dietetics)
Agata Martin (she/her) is a fifth-year student completing a Degree in Nutrition and Food Science with a Specialization in Dietetics. She has completed CSL placements through CSL 100: Introduction to Community Service-learning, ALES 204: Communication Fundamentals for Professionals, AREC 173: The Plate, the Planet and Society, and NUTR 477: Advanced Population and Public Health Nutrition.
Can you trace your involvement with CSL? Two years ago, I took a class called ALES 204: Communication Fundamentals for Professionals, which had a CSL component that I didn't know about at the time. We worked with nonprofits and tried to help them create marketing material. For example, we worked with this company called Humanserve International and helped them redesign their website. It was cool to help because it felt like what we were doing was going towards something real and tangible.
I also did CSL 100, where I worked with a program called Grocery Run. It's the Multicultural Health Brokers grocery run program. They are an organization that works with many newly arrived immigrants to Canada, helping them settle in and connecting them with resources they might not have known about.
Why did you decide to take your first CSL course? When I got into the dietetics program, I had room in my schedule to take extra classes. So instead of just taking random classes, I decided I would work towards a certificate, and partly why I chose to do CSL was because it overlapped nicely with the classes I could take.
Why did you decide to take the certificate? Right now, I'm in dietetics, and I eventually want to work in the community as a dietitian. I think these experiences I'm having directly within the community will be relevant when I leave my program and work in the real world. Many of the volunteer opportunities I've chosen have been able to relate to my degree in some way, whether they're food-related or nutrition related. I think what I've learned throughout the course of these CSL embedded classes so far is that there's a lot of work that needs to be done, especially around food, justice, food insecurity, and making sure that the people that we're helping, aren’t treated like just a charity case. These are usually people who found themselves in a bad situation.
For example, employers may not want to hire immigrants because there's a language barrier, and because their qualifications and credentials might not transfer over. This contributes to not being able to find their basic needs, such as food insecurity, housing, etc. And I think personally, as a dietitian, I can help ensure that the nutrition options/food options out there can meet their needs because part of food dignity and food security is having something healthy and nutritious, and culturally relevant.
What was/ is your favourite placement, and why? Hands down, the one I did this last semester, which is the Grocery Run Program, was my favourite placement. The atmosphere immediately embraced going in and talking to my team and the people there, and ultimately it was an eye-opening experience. In my previous placements, I didn't get direct contact with people helping out and other volunteers within the program. So I found it more real because we had the opportunity to talk to others and form a connection, friendships, and bonds, which draws you back to work wherever you are, whether in a workplace or a volunteer organization.
I found it relevant to what I was studying; therefore, I could take away a lot more in terms of just what I was learning from them.
Overall, I could tell everybody we talked to wasn't there for selfish reasons, or to just get something on their application. Instead, they were all there because they genuinely cared about the people and the program. It's hard to find people who are that selfless and caring, and I'm thankful to have gotten the opportunity to meet such inspirational people because I could see they cared about what they were doing.
Did CSL change your ways of thinking about certain things, and how? When taking CSL, it made me think about the privilege that I wield as somebody who comes from a more affluent background and the education that I was able to receive because of my parent's successes. It just made me realize that it's not the case for many children from immigrants; as I've mentioned before, it made me realize that I am very privileged. I also learned a lot about how volunteering can negatively impact the community. And that was a perspective that I'd never really considered before.
I learned about food waste, as it's something that's not heavily discussed in my program, which is surprising for a Nutrition Dietetics program. So it changed my way of how food is sustainable and how it works, and how it can be incorporated into nonprofit organizations that provide food hampers. I learned much about what it means to be food secure and have justice when handling food. So I paid attention and took those things away because that's what my whole career will be focused on when I graduate.
What was the most important and memorable lesson you learned? Many students who go to university are very privileged, and I don't think they realize that. I think programs such as CSL should be more at the forefront of opportunities that are open to people because I think it's a unique way for students to learn more about things that interest them, that's not so capitalistic. I have a ton of privilege, and the fact that I could give back even a little bit was very memorable. However, that doesn't even make up for what I get and what people don't have.
Did CSL expose you to new experiences and knowledge? I believe looking more into food insecurity, and food justice has impacted my outlook on my personal and academic life. I found that through my placements, I've learnt more compared to my program, and I guess it's not part of the curriculum, and perhaps we don't have time for it, but I'm thankful that these placements allowed me to learn something new.
I wish CSL was more embedded in our curriculum because I think it's something tremendously valuable, especially going into more depth about food backgrounds. For students who don't work in the community, it can be more of a shell shock for them when they go into their placements and when they go into their jobs because they haven't had these opportunities to work in the community. So learning more about what people need from the people you're trying to help is something I wouldn't have understood if I didn't take CSL.
How has CSL impacted your academic and or your personal life? My experience with CSL has made me realize that I want to work in the community. So taking these experiences and knowledge I've had throughout CSL can allow me to give a unique perspective in my life to those less fortunate. This is how I think it's impacted my academics; it's made me switch gears because before, I was leaning more towards sports nutrition, but after working with CSL, I think there's a lot that I could do within the community. So with the experiences I've been able to get through this program, I think it will be a lot more beneficial to those who need the help and myself as well.
In thinking about how CSL impacted me personally, I suppose it is being able to understand different perspectives and be more empathetic. For example, it made me consider my parents' perspectives when they came to Canada. I never really thought about my parents or what they go through because, as kids, we can be selfish and I didn't give much thought about what they had to deal with coming into a foreign country. However, working with newcomers, it did hit home because it made me realize that my parents could have been in these situations. So I think it's changed how I view my parents and what they went through when they came to Canada, the struggles they probably went through trying to learn English and access to foods they were comfortable eating.

New research reveals that cinnamon powder (#Ceylon) is effective at reducing symptoms of painful periods (primary #dysmenorrhea) in college age students. Published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research and titled, “Comparative effect of cinnamon and Ibuprofen for treatment of primary dysmenorrhea: a randomized double-blind clinical trial,” Iranian researchers evaluated the effect of either 420 mg of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum), 400 mg of ibuprofen, or a starch placebo, in three groups of 38 females. Both pain intensity and duration were monitored in all groups, with the results reported as follows: “The mean pain severity score and mean duration of pain in Ibuprofen and Cinnamon were less than placebo group respectively (p< 0.001). Of 4 hours after the intervention, there were no statistically significant differences between the Cinnamon and placebo group (p> 0.05). Of eight hours after the intervention, the mean pain severity in the cinnamon group was significantly lower than the placebo group (p< 0.001). The researchers concluded: “Cinnamon can be regarded as a safe and effective treatment for primary dysmenorrhea. More researches are recommended to study the efficacy of Cinnamon on reducing menstrual bleeding.” Why do we consider #cinnamon superior to #ibuprofen? Considering the well-known dangers of ibuprofen, which is estimated to kill several thousand a year from its cardiovascular side effects alone, cinnamon’s potential role as a natural alternative to this drug is highly promising. Unlike ibuprofen, using cinnamon for pain doesn’t come with any cardiotoxic properties. To the contrary, it is known to have both blood pressure lowering and blood sugar lowering properties, both which may confer protection against cardiovascular disease. As far as the question of its role in menstrual bleeding addressed in the conclusion above, arecent randomized, double-blinded clinical trialfound that it actually reduced the severity of menstrual bleeding in women, making it a win-win as far as difficult or inconvenient #menstruation symptoms. Arec Update - Stabilizing the Sorceror
Of the banned characters in Devastation, Arec was definitely the most deserving – at least after the starting position changes toned down a bit of Kaitlyn’s tremendous positioning power. His UA is one of the strongest in the game, with the ability to completely shut down a wide swath of enemy options under the guise of “fairness”, and his Styles were among the best brawling styles a fighter could ask for. Together, he ground out games with above-average damage and near-perfect ability to set up mixups that players could at best escape and at worst suffer 6 or more guaranteed damage.
When reworking Arec, there had been a discussion floating around for some time that all he really needed was 1 less Power every beat. Testing proved that to be fairly accurate – Arec’s problem was the combination of his UA and his trading potentional, not just one or the other. And to that end, I present the new and improved (for his opponent, at least! We did not in fact buff Arec) master of sorcery:
Arec’s UA is unchanged. The errata to no longer negate End of Beat continues to exist, but other than that his Influence Tokens will continue to shenanigan exactly as they used to.
Card Changes
Hex, as well, is unchanged. The ability to automatically hit any opponent anywhere on the board is strong, but Style changes limit his ability to set it up.
Now, here come the big changes. Returning continues to be a strong Style, with an excellent statline and the ability to win Priority ties. However, the auto-stun is now gone and returned with an ability providing utility/card advantage instead of sometimes (always, with Influence) winning the beat outright.
Perceptional, AKA busted Geomantic clone. With Perceptional Strike originally outspeeding both Dodge and Burst and letting you spend a token to wipe Start of Beat or Before Activating and guarantee the hit, the Priority was brought down a peg. Additionally, the Power was tapped down by 1 as well.
Mirrored is no longer a strictly better Sarafina UA, now providing a much more limited choice of teleport locations. Along with that, it lost a Power and Priority in order to be worse at filtering out options where the opponent cannot get out of Range 2 due to an Influence Token.
Manipulative had a Power converted to a Priority, but the effect remains the same and continues to be his real payout attack. Without Returning’s auto-stun, he’ll need to work a little harder to punish the manipulation, though.
Phantom was always fine, and continues to be acceptable. Its statline is fantastic except Power, and with his other cards weakened the lineup should give more reason to play it.
Arec’s finishers now negate his Influence antes. This means he needs to work much harder to land Uncanny Oblivion, particularly. It also means he can’t use Start of Beat cancelling to break both Dodge and Burst as his main counters.
Overall, Arec’s nerfs are likely to be less severe than some were expecting but still heavily tone down the character’s trading potential and board control. Dedicated Arec players will need to get used to playing without their main repositioning tool (Mirrored’s End of Beat) and Power hits to just about everything except Returning, including a more pronounced weakness to enemy Stun Guard without an auto-stun tool. This makes Arec more base-reliant in particular, forcing him to Dodge or Burst more when trying to get to his optimal ranges (both of which can be very punishable).
We hope you enjoyed this preview! Join us next time when we talk about some bonus fighters.
