Re the TSN article
Im kinda curious what WHL and CHL policies are if coaches showering w/ players and the alleged VO2 max incident didn’t violate the protocol.
For the former, I’ve never played hockey, but I’ve worked at camps and taught swimming lessons and I never, ever, showered with the kids/teens I worked with. It wasn’t on my radar.
What caught my attention the most was the VO2 max thing. I can’t imagine walking away from someone in that state, and definitely not taking a picture of them in such a vulnerable state (to what humiliate them?).
I know it’s completely separate from the 2018 WJC situation, but I’m still disturbed that hockey culture is so messed up. Maybe im reading this wrong but it does kinda sound like the one guy got fired for reporting this.
i think that likely the showers and vo2 max incident don't violate any chl/whl protocol because there 100% isn't any specific protocol that deals with situations like this in their policies. while it is gross and certainly not something that anyone in their right mind should be doing, it's also not something that is directly illegal nor is it something that happens frequently enough that the chl/whl would particularly make a note of to protect against in their policies.
while i agree that the showering thing is weird and absolutely not something that i would ever do, i will say that the article clarified that it wasn't showering WITH the players but in the players' showers (i.e. utilizing their facilities while they were present in the locker room next door). also, in no way do i want to discuss or speculate the ideology behind these alleged actions because i truthfully don't know and i don't want to know.
referring to what i said before, it's not my place to guess why some of these actions occured, nor is it my place to speculate what dennis williams was thinking when/if they occured. i don't know what he was thinking during the vo2 max incident, nor do i want to guess at it, and i certainly don't want to try to put myself into his shoes and ask what i would do in that situation. i don't want to empathize with anyone who would be involved in anything like that, true or not.
hockey culture is fucked up. i know it sounds awful to say, but at some point, if you want to continue to like this sport, you just have to accept it. celebrate the improvements to it! there have been many, and progress is being made within the sport to begin making it less fucked up (by many, many activists). because honestly, if you're just going to focus on the negatives of a situation, then pick a new sport. this shit unfortunately happens far too often, but if you hitched your wagon to this, you gotta deal. in this case, i am happy that the whl has investigated the complaints. i am happy that it was reported to both them and us safesport. of course i'm unhappy that it happened in the first place, and that the whl continued to let him coach amidst the investiagation, and that us safesport might be the most useless investigative body for sports in all of north america. but positives. at least we are taking victim statements and complaints seriously now.
i would caution against putting your full trust in fired employees of any organization when it comes to a situation like this. yes, they could have been fired for reporting this incident. they also could have been fired for entirely separate reasons and are using this information to get back at the organization who fired them. while i would say that's unlikely to be the case, the fact that the fired employee hasn't sued the everett silvertips for wrongful termination yet indicates that there is more there than what is currently being reported. i await for more detail, and again, i'm really only here to report the facts from the reporters.
this is the last ask i'm taking on this topic
