Trip to Disney Land!
“Look dad!” Hoshi yelled excitedly, his body leaning forward off the railings, “it’s the castle!”
Oikawa gazed up at the castle that was poking out in the distance. The ferryboat was slowly heading towards the entrance. He then turned his attention towards Hoshi who quickly whipped out his phone, taking photos of the scenery, marveling at the wildlife that dotted the lagoon.
“Gotta send these to Minami and Leo to make them jealous,” he said, smirking, while his fingers flew across the screen.
Iwaizumi laughed, “They’re probably sleeping.”
“Even better! I’ll make sure they’ll feel extra jealous as a wake up gift.” Triumphantly, Hoshi pressed the send button and watched as the photos uploaded onto their group chat. He put away his phone and stood in between his parents. He looked up to Oikawa who instantaneously winked once their eyes met. Hoshi grimaced, but nevertheless, with a big smile, said, “Happy birthday dad!”
Oikawa broke out smiling, “Thanks, Hoshi.” The ferryboat soon slowed to a stop as Iwaizumi hurriedly checked their belongings to see if anything was lost. Oikawa and Hoshi peeled themselves away from the railing, preparing to rush straight into Disney.
Even Oikawa stood in a state of awe as Cinderella’s castle loomed overhead. People scattered all around them, taking pictures, and running around in complete euphoria. The castle spiraled high into the air, gleaming its cream-colored walls accented by a faint blue. It radiated a magical happiness.
Oikawa watched as Hoshi marveled at the castle, taking photos at every angle he could find. The clear blue sky, scattered with big, fluffy, white clouds, made the giant amusement park picturesque.
“This calls for a group selfie!” Oikawa beamed at his family. Iwaizumi rolled his eyes, pulling his phone out in the process, knowing he could never escape Oikawa’s puppy eyes. He held out his arm, letting Oikawa stand behind him, flaunting his beauty, with Hoshi who was pointing at the castle behind them. Click! Click!
“Okay dad you got your pictures, but we gotta keep moving!” Hoshi yelled as he pulled Oikawa’s arm who instinctively grabbed Iwaizumi, dragging him along with them.
Iwaizumi walked beside the two, watching Hoshi pull Oikawa like a dog on a leash, he grinned, “Our little one will always be the same, won’t he?”
Hoshi stopped, “I’m in high school.”
Iwaizumi shrugged as Oikawa chuckled, “You’ll always be our little baby.”
Hoshi stuck his tongue out but kept going, still tugging on Oikawa’s arm.
They stopped at a store to buy Mickey Ear headbands; Iwaizumi with the classic, Oikawa with the bedazzled sequin version, and Hoshi repping his Marvel love with an Iron Man version. Then, the family set forth towards Frontierland. Oikawa boasted about his ‘amazingness,’ as light reflected off of his Mickey ears, walking as if he owned the whole world— which of course, he knew he did.
“I love you dad, but your Mickey ears are blinding me,” Hoshi muttered as they waited in line for Splash Mountain.
“As they should,” Oikawa remarked back. They were minutes away from boarding the ride, and Oikawa couldn’t help but clench his fingers in nervousness. He focused on the rocks that lined the cave in the entrance, but as they walked towards the line, he gasped at the huge drop that carried dozens of screaming riders, followed by a grand splash. He didn’t want to admit it, but he was a little afraid.
Hoshi watched Oikawa prepping himself mentally. “You scared Dad?”
Oikawa shook his head, stuttering, “Me? Scared? Not one bit,” laughing in distress.
Iwaizumi raised his hands, showing how strongly Oikawa was gripping him, “I think you are scared.” Oikawa sighed.
Hoshi laughed, “Dad, it’s not that bad. It might seem scary, but it’ll be over in a second. Besides,” he pointed at Oikawa, “You had to fight against even scarier teams for hours, and you never backed down.”
Oikawa nodded vigorously, letting Hoshi’s words sink in, “Yeah, that’s right! This ride should be nothing compared to what I had to face!” Those thoughts seemed to dissipate as he was strapped in, Hoshi beside him, with Iwaizumi behind.
He exhaled, thinking to himself, everything will be fine.
The ride lurched forward, the water gently carrying them along. The ride soon began to ascend and Oikawa prepared himself for a drop, but the ride only leveled out bringing them outside into the bright sun. Squinting, he saw the forestry of the mountain, listening to the music playing overhead. The ride continued, the little drops jolting him as they entered a cave filled with animals singing and talking. He could hear the excited sounds that escaped Hoshi and allowed himself to relax as they watched geese and other animals sing and talk within their little wonderland.
Oikawa soon gasped as the ride suddenly jolted faster, dropping suddenly, reminding him that, well, everything was actually not okay.
It was dark, the only thing illuminating was the blue light coming from the sidelines. They entered in another cave, dimly lit, but filled with strange glowing shapes. Singing continued as the ride continued to go down, down, down, the glowing mushrooms and laughing animals kept Oikawa grounded. The ride soon slowed down, and he watched as they approached an incline.
He gulped, the ride suddenly coming to a stop. Hoshi got excited as he looked in front of him at Oikawa, “You ready, Dad?”
He vaguely nodded, hands clenched at the bar, gripping on for dear life. The ride lurched forwards, slowly creeping towards the outside world. Oikawa gasped at the view from the top, his eyes glancing down, making his stomach drop.
Looking to his right, Oikawa met Iwaizumi’s eyes. Iwaizumi started to speak, “Hey, it’s going to be alright,” as he grabbed Oikawa’s hand, squeezing it, making Oikawa feel safe. They looked at each other in the eyes for the brief moment the ride stopped, anticipating the drop.
“I love you,” were the last words Oikawa heard before the ride lurched.
The ride spiraled downward prompting screams to erupt from his mouth. His heart seemed to lurch out of his body, but he heard the delighted screams from Hoshi who raised his arms. Iwaizumi started to yell, his hollers echoing through the park. Seeing how much fun they were having, Oikawa gingerly raised his own, realizing it wasn’t too bad. The adrenaline coursed through his body, letting the exhilarated feelings of being free escape him. Water crashed into him, spraying his body.
He was okay. The ride leveled out at the bottom bringing them through more caves of singing animals and they were finally at the end. When Oikawa stepped out, his body jittered, but in a good way, like the feeling he had after beating someone in a volleyball game that took hours of brainpower.
Hoshi gazed at him, “Wasn’t that fun?!”
Oikawa chuckled, “Very. There really was nothing to worry about.”
Hoshi nodded, “Now onto the next ride!”
Walking across the park, the family occasionally stopped to relax, the hot sun causing everyone to sweat, making their occasional breaks in the shade a necessity. They would also get distracted by the many food stalls, leaving Oikawa happy as he ate his ice cream, letting the cold refresh his body.
They would also stumble across small areas with nature overflowing, with the river meandering through, as the ducks paddled their way through the water. The sun rose high into the sky, but quickly began to drop as the weather cooled. They walked across the entire park and arrived at Tomorrowland, the futuristic, space vibes that emitted the place sparked joy within Oikawa’s alien loving heart. Hoshi got excited as he spied a giant white dome-like building with the words Space Mountain at the front. “There’s our final ride!”
Oikawa raised an eyebrow, “Really? I kinda wanna ride that,” pointing at the ride that passed overhead, carrying passengers throughout Tomorrowland.
Hoshi sighed, “Second to last ride.”
Iwaizumi chuckled as they walked towards Space Mountain. The family walked down what seemed like a spaceship, bright lights flashing from the walls, the room becoming dimmer and dimmer. They soon approached a huge room, where everyone waited for their turn. “This is it!” Hoshi said as he bounced in his spot.
Iwaizumi sighed, “Our day at Disney is coming to an end.”
Oikawa watched people get on and off, “We should do this again.”
Hoshi beamed, “We should bring the twins with us next time.”
Iwaizumi stared at Oikawa, “Now that would be an adventure.”
It was soon their turn as a spaceship rode up and Hoshi stepped into the first cockpit, Oikawa behind him and then lastly Iwaizumi. The ride began, and they entered in space.
His eyes sparkled, looking at his family— his very own universe. Love erupted within his heart, matching the fireworks in the distance.
