The Rado Star Prize South Africa 2014!

Welcome to the Rado Star Prize South Africa 2014!

As part of our sponsorship of World Design Capital Cape Town 2014, Rado is bringing its internationally renowned Rado Star Prize competition to South Africa for the first time.

Are you a talented design student, or a recently graduated design talent? Do you have an idea for a project that could make a difference to an individual or a community in South Africa now and in the future? If so, you’ve come to the right place. Read on!

We’re offering you the opportunity to show the world what you can do when it comes to design, and to put South African design on the world map. Whatever kind of design you specialise in, we want to hear from you. The Rado Star Prize 2014 is focussed on Social Design and that means entries from any field of design are open (see Ts and Cs for more information). We are looking for entries that focus on the benefits of design and how it can help to make the world a better place.

To be in with a chance of winning the Jury Prize, submit your design project between April 2nd 2014 and 31st August 2014 via our www.radostarprize.co.za All you have to do is give us a description of your project, an image of what it could look like and give us your name and address in South Africa.

All entries will be anonymous until the jury makes its final decision. Then, ten finalists will have their entries shown on the Rado Star Prize website and on rado.com and will be in with a chance of winning the main prize of 100,000 ZAR, an iconic Rado watch and a blog on the design section of rado.com during 2015 to document your latest design experiences and inspiration.

WDC2013

It's terrible that I haven't been blogging since last year, isn't it? To the extent that my blog somehow disappeared. Hopefully it reappears after this post.

In between getting married and all that, life's been good :)

Anyway, I was inspired to blog a bit after attending a talk at the World Diabetes Conference (WDC) by a lady named Kerri Sparling, who utilises social media to share her story of living with Type 1 Diabetes. Listening to her unfold her life of struggling with the condition helped me see her as a person living with diabetes, not just another patient with a disease. Her sharing was so honest, so interactive, so... normal. Sure it was hard for her, and it must still be at times to have to inject and prick herself constantly, but seeing her carry on with life and inspiring the people around her made me wish all patients were like that. Positive, motivated, unafraid to make mistakes along the way. But I suppose if I was in that position, I might not be able to react the same way. The only thing I can do when I see patients in my next placement is to remember this example that life can and does go on even after a diagnosis, and I can only hope and pray that my interaction with my patients will motivate them to see that.

With my smoothie and nuts, all ready for the last session at #WDC2013. It was my first official volunteer experience in Melbourne and I sure did enjoy it! Met new people, caught up with friends, gained some updated knowledge and got lots of free resources. Time to start refreshing my knowledge before clinical placement next year. Eeeks!

Fifth WDC pitching session next week

The fifth pitching session, hosted by the Cape Town Design NPC, will take place 5-8pm on 27 May 2014 at the Clocktower Centre, Pavilion Conference Centre, V&A Waterfront.

Tickets cost R50 per person. Members of the public, media, investors, philanthropists, government planners and business representatives are all invited to support the selected projects that highlight cutting-edge design, innovation and social entrepreneurship.

Pitching projects

Cape Town Design NPC has allocated R1-million to go to recognised projects and will award R10,000 to the best project pitch at each session.

• Community Led Spatial Design: is the spatial reconfiguration of informal settlements to those that are more rationalised leads to social cohesion, shelter upgrades and infrastructural improvements. It builds community, acknowledges the positive aspects of informality and helps bridge the urban divide by including, not removing the poor. #WDC236
