I, a dumbass, have injured myself three times while on the clock at one job or another. Do I involve WCB or Worksafe NB? Hell no. It's a hassle, it was my own stupidity each time, and I've seen what hoops physiotherapists have to jump through. I'll save us all some paperwork, since I have the guardian angel of dumbasses looking out for me and I've yet to injure myself badly enough to be put off work for an extended period of time.

365k365day Week 10
Day 1: No writing done today. Did some painting instead
Day 2: Wrote 2.4k today! :) I worked on Familiar’s Mark (a short story) and got a good chunk done, which is very satisfying.
Day 3: Only wrote 860 words today, but it’s better than nothing. Was having technical difficulties today (sort of--just a really laggy computer)
Day 4: The difficulties continue. Only got 500 words. Haven’t been sleeping very well this week, so also feeling really tired :S
Day 5: Had a physio appointment today--ankle hasn’t been doing great, so I got permission from WCB to head back. My physiotherapist worked on and then taped my ankle up and it felt pretty good for the whole day. No writing though. Today was more of an errands kind of day.
Day 6: So I got my tattoo finished today and I love it very much :) Unfortunately between that and getting ready for a tea and craft sale event for girl guides tomorrow, I did not get any writing done.
Day 7: At the tea for the entire afternoon. Probably could have gotten some writing done afterwards, but I was feeling lazy. Whoops
Overall Thoughts: The week started off pretty good, but I clearly lost it halfway through. Sure there were valid reasons why I couldn’t write, but the whole point of challenging myself is finding those odd 10 minutes to squeeze in some writing, right? So I need to try harder for this next week.
Other Comments: My total words for the week was exactly 3.8k. I am officially behind (again) so not only do I need to try and write at least 5 days this next week, but I have to write an extra 3k to catch up to where I need to be. Doable...if I can stop procrastinating...

Hi there! Since I’m finding it difficult to keep up with making sure everyone is in the loop with my health issue right now, I’m hoping this platform can help. Thanks for stopping in.
I haven’t blogged since college, but I need something to keep my brain busy while my body is down and out. Emotions are high and I get wiped out pretty easily these days but I’ll do my best to keep this short. Maybe I’ll break it up into a few posts. We’ll see as I go.
The backstory:
I’ve been struggling with back pain for a few years now but never could get an answer or long term solution. I downed insane amounts of anti inflammatory medications just to get through most days. Doctors didn’t have answers so I was referred to physio therapy. They guessed that I was dealing with a bulging disc and started acupuncture and an exercise regimen to sort that out. I was managing and getting by, but not getting better.
In January (this year - 2017), I slipped on my way in to work and felt a sharp stabbing pain shoot from my lower left side, above my hip, down my leg. I struggled through the day thinking I’d just re-aggravated the bulging disc issue I’d had prior. I left that day and went straight to my chiropractors office. He suggested a phone call to WCB, some time off work, and X-rays.
Then I visited my physiotherapist. The X-rays showed no damage to bones so we did treatments to try to help control/minimize the spasms. Nothing seemed to work.
I returned to work, part-time, but struggled. My days consisted of working and laying in bed. That’s all I could manage. My fiancé stepped in to manage the house and kids and I pushed myself beyond what I should have just to have some semblance of an involvement in life. I was in constant and agonizing pain.
By June, I was working 4 days a week. My experience with WCB was traumatic and heartbreaking. I didn’t feel supported or human. I felt like a number. I wasn’t recovering according to their expectations so therefore I was just some leach trying to take advantage of their system and I was treated as such. Quite rudely and with disrespect.
I was referred to their chiropractor for an evaluation. He assessed me and determined that he noticed I was showing signs of being in pain, but couldn’t diagnose an issue, so therefore recommended that no further inquiry or treatment should be pursued and that I should return to work. I felt dehumanized. I was being told that it was all in my head and I needed to get over it.
So that’s what I tried to do. I felt like no one could find a problem so there must not be one and I just needed to push myself harder. I pushed harder. I tried harder. My chiropractor pushed for my doctor to request an MRI so he did, and I got through to the end of the school year holding on to the hope that an MRI would be able to give me some answers.
Throughout July, I spent days in bed, doing nothing, while my kids were away with family or their dad. I was feeling ok after allowing myself time to do nothing. I fit in activities when the kids were home and rested while they were away. And I waited for the MRI that could hopefully provide some insight. It was scheduled for early September. I’d hoped to get in sooner on a cancelation but that luck was not on my side.
By mid-August, things took a turn. I started having more, and worse spasms, limiting my ability to walk and drive. The contant spasms and the severity of them was causing me to have issues with my shoulders and neck and I was getting headaches that would cause me to be sick. The countdown was on now, though. The MRI was coming up soon.
I started back to work a few half days that month and then full days in September. A few days back and then it was MRI day! I took that whole day off. Glad I did.
The test ended and the tech came in. She asked me if I could stay for a second test. The doctor there has seen the scan and wanted to run a second one using dye. I immediately knew that there was something that caught their eye. I was in pain but they allowed me to get up to move around for a few minutes before the second scan. When that one was done, I was sent on my way and told results would be to my doctor in 5-6 days.
When I got the message from my doctors office - that day! - I definitely knew something was up. I called immediately when they opened the next morning and they booked me in that afternoon. Expecting news of something to do with the disc or prior injury issues, the news I got hit me like a sack of hammers.
The MRI showed a tumour. A TUMOUR! What the actual f*ck?!?! Didn’t see that coming. And there I was, alone. I cried. Listened to my doctor, cried some more. He left me for a few minutes and then came back to explain what was going to happen next - a referral to a neurosurgeon. Great. Specialists are notoriously sloooooow…but he assured me things would move quickly now. I felt sick and overwhelmed.
I saw the neurosurgeon a month later. He was great. He sent a referral for a second, more thorough MRI (brain, neck, and full spine) as the first was just of my lower spine, and a follow up with him after that. I had an MRI on the 9th and I saw him again on the 14th. There was a little snafu with the MRI and they only did my brain so he assured me that they’d strongarm and get me in quickly for the other two (neck and upper spine). Three days later, I was in! Woohoo!
Now, our social is all wrapped up and we’ve got a surgery date for me: December 6.
Fingers crossed that I don’t get bumped.

A Scream in the Night
Does anyone else ever feel the need to scream? Just a long, drawn out, piercing yell into the abyss? Is anyone else unable to do that? Not even into the emptiness of a house or the softness of a pillow. The scream just gets stuck in your throat. And it builds up over time until your throat feels swollen and your jaws tense but still the scream will not come. There is no release just a constant build up of pressure and you need an outlet, any outlet, to release the pain.
This is my scream. Feel free to ignore it but I must release it before the pressure becomes too much.
I am feeling useless. My depression is worsening and I know I am going to hit my catatonic stage soon but I don't know what to do.
I have been looking for a job since I was released from the hospital at the beginning of February. The combination of a bad job market and the need of a new career has stymied me though. Everyday I spend upwards of seven hours pouring over leads, writing resumes, cover letters, taking job readiment courses, cold calling, and pouring over every job posting site I can get my hands on. Seven days at week and all this for nothing. Not even an interview.
Part of this is likely my fault. I was starting on a path towards something I loved. I dreamed of being an electrician since I was a little girl. I can't explain it but when I am wiring something the world just seems right. I feel at peace. Throughout school I was told two things that dissuaded me from following my dream: 1) girls shouldn't and/or couldn't be electricians and 2) you are too smart to waste your time becoming an electrician. The worst part was that I listened to them.
I did part of a Bachelor of Arts and got a certificate and a diploma in Design Studies and I liked both of these things but I didn't love them. I can't be creative on demand. I can't create a great sign or Christmas card with a few hours of notice but that is what the job demands. I am not personable enough to do anything with the careers born of a BA.
Two jobs later, one meh and one absolute hell on Earth, and I decided to try for my dream. That was my first roadblock; people didn't want to hire a girl with no labour experience. I was outright told, illegally, that “we don't hire pussy girls” by one particular person. I tried going through Women Building Futures, a not for profit group that helps women get into the trades, but I was told that I was too shy to be worth their time.
I was stronger then. I brushed off the rejection and only let the barbs sting a little bit. I got a job as a fabricator so that I would have labour experience as I kept my ear to the ground for any place that would let me be a starter electrical helper.
As a fabricator I worked hard. So hard. Too hard. I upped production in the department I was assigned to by nearly 400%. I streamlined everything. I designed more efficient practices. And I worked hard. Six months into this job I started not being able to feel my right hand and my right shoulder blade felt like there was a knife in it. I did what I was supposed to do. I went to the doctor. He told me that I had a repetitive strain injury and could not work as a fabricator for at least a while. I told my work and filled out all of the Workers Compensation Board stuff. Everyone acted like it would get better. It didn't.
Six months later I had had MRIs, xrays, ultrasounds, and had been to five different physiotherapists and more than twenty doctors. That is when I got a phone call from the WCB. They couldn't find anything wrong even though I still could not feel my hand and my back still felt like I had a knife in it so they were going to clear me as all better. The next week I got laid off work.
Still I was stronger then. I picked myself up. I found another program like Women Build Future but with less strict entrance requirements. I got in. They promised me that they would help me get my Blue Book (a record of a trades persons schooling and required prerequisite hours). They didn't. They got me into a minor electrically related role, which is better than nothing. Or so I thought. What that started was six of the worst months in my life.
My direct supervisor was a tyrant and the end of the six months I worked there only one person had lasted longer than me under his supervision in sixteen years. He almost tanked the Calgary office when he was in charge there and he had not gotten better. He yelled constantly about how stupid I was, bemoaned the fact that they would send him a “useless, fat, stupid girl” to anyone who would listen, client or co-worker, he would switch my shifts between night and days constantly, even though he knew that at the time I was dependant on the bus which didn't run at night in that area. He hit me. He threatened me. He spit on me. And so much more but I took it. Why? Because the “lovely” program I had gotten the job through told me that even if I was being abused they would not get me another job and if I quit before six months was up I would have to pay back the schooling which was over $16000.00, allegedly, and I just did not have that type of money.
I kept telling myself that I had gotten through worse. I had been sexually assaulted, pushed off a roof, slandered, and bullied at my first labour job. I thought I could handle it. I was wrong.
I last six months and two days at the job. For the last three weeks I passed out from anxiety, puked constantly, and had upwards of two panic attacks a day. Then it happened. I went semi catatonic. I felt nothing, just empty and blank. I submitted my one week notice. That was January 2016.
I still cannot feel my right hand and the constant feeling of a knife in my back serves as a reminder that overall people are not on my side. I gave everything to my dream: my body, my innocence, my sanity, my mind and I got nothing in return.
This dwells on my mind because right now people keep telling me that I should work towards doing what I love but I love electrical work, even after everything it still calms me down, but I can't do it. My arm is too damaged. My mind too. When I say this though people just say that I will find something else that I love. And this makes me sad and a little angry. There is no respect for what I lost. It is always that I will “get better”, “find something else”, or “should forget it” but I gave so much of myself to the pursuit of this dream I do not think I have anything else to give any more. I just have the bad memories to keep me company.
This mindset makes it hard to write a resume because I don't think I am any good to anyone any more.
I had a cousin die a month or so ago. She was in her late thirties, was a mother of three, and was well loved. She died of stomach cancer. Over three thousand people came to her funeral and the Prime Minister of Ireland himself called to offer condolences to the family. When this happened all I could think was that I wish it was me who died. Not many would care and so much joy would not be lost to this world. I truly feel that I am not worth the air I breath. No one wants me for work. The government won't help me financially. I will probably be bankrupt within two months if I do not find a job. I want to die but not hurt anyone. I wish I could disappear and have never existed and to be honest it feels like I am making my way towards that point as more and more doctors give up on me and my parents fail to understand the depth of my illness and all I want to do is scream....
I've had enough of living I've had enough of dying I've had enough of smiling I've had enough of crying I've taken all the high roads I've squandered and I've saved I've had enough of childhood I've had enough of graves I've had enough of pain I've had enough of strife I've had enough of pills I've seen my share of life I'm finished with the fashions And acting like I'm tough I'm bored with hate and passion I've had enough of trying to love

Chiropractic and physiotherapy are integral parts of WCB-approved treatment plans, especially for injuries like repetitive strain injuries, sprains, and strains.
Benefits of Chiropractic Care for ICBC/WCB Injuries
Pain Relief and Management
Targeted Adjustments: Chiropractic adjustments focus on correcting spinal misalignments and relieving pressure on nerves, which can significantly reduce pain associated with injuries covered by ICBC and WCB.
Natural Healing: Chiropractic care promotes the body's natural ability to heal by improving spinal health and enhancing nervous system function.
Improved Mobility and Function
Restoring Movement: Through manual adjustments and therapeutic exercises, chiropractic care helps restore range of motion and flexibility, essential for recovering from injuries.
Preventing Recurrence: By addressing the root causes of pain and misalignments, chiropractic care helps prevent future injuries and promotes long-term spinal health.
Benefits of Physiotherapy for ICBC/WCB Injuries
Rehabilitation and Recovery
Personalized Exercise Programs: Physiotherapists design customized exercise regimens to strengthen injured muscles, improve flexibility, and restore function.
Manual Therapy: Techniques such as massage, mobilization, and stretching are used to reduce pain, improve circulation, and enhance tissue healing.
Functional Restoration
Return to Activity: Physiotherapy focuses on gradually restoring your ability to perform daily activities and return to work, ensuring a safe and effective transition.
Ergonomic Training: Educating patients on proper body mechanics and ergonomics to prevent future injuries, particularly important for workplace-related claims.
