Updated Reference! Meet Hyrule, the Brown Thrasher!
Facts about Hyrule:
He's part of a sub-flock with Legend and Wild. He's a pair bird, though; more solitary in nature. Legend was surprised Hyrule accepted Wild into the sub-flock! Hyrule knew Wild needed some friends <3
Brown Thrashers can mimic more than 1,100 song types; more than mockingbirds! However, they tend to repeat short phrases. Hyrule is the singer in the flock and has a lovely voice, but he gets pretty repetitive on songs.
He can also mimic voices! He usually does it just to play pranks.
Hyrule is prone to biting and nipping (thrashers use their bills to defend themselves). His patience is lower than Wild's and he's not above a snap if someone bothers him.
His feathers let him hide easier than the flashy birds. He's prone to wandering off to explore or for time alone, although he doesn't usually go too far outside flock call range with his sub-flock.
While he generally comes off as sweet, he's a vicious little gremlin. He will absolutely instigate chaos and let someone else take the fall for it.
The top of the overalls unbuttons so he can wear the bottom as shorts with the purple crop shirt if needed.

I accidentally opinion’d all over myself, and I quickly ran out of character space to respond. I didn’t want to have to type like eight comments because I wasn’t sure if you’d get pinged with a bunch of notifications you don’t want, so I decided to just post it all as one big post if that’s okay!  Maybe it's just because I'm far too invested in my own muse and therefore struggle to release the image I have of him in my head. xD But that voice, to me, sounds really off for the character its portraying. It sounds like a cheap anime dub: like it was just someone hired to get the job done quickly. It was very generic, very ‘monster-of-the-week’; something we might have seen back in the days of the FOXBox or Kids WB. To me there was just no real depth to the sound of his voice. Ganondorf is thunderous, he's grandiose -- he's BIG! Granted, we only got a small sample, but the emotion projected through his vocals was just very weak, too. It was as if the actor wasn’t at all invested in the character he’s reading for. When Ganondorf talks about Hyrule, we should be able to hear the seething hatred drip off of his tongue as if speaking the very name “Hyrule” is like poison in his mouth. This is a Hyrule that has literally driven him to know nothing else but rage and hatred and malice: this is a Hyrule that has stolen his very people away from him. The Gerudo turned their back on their own king and as a result have aligned themselves with Hyrule. This is the ultimate knife in the heart, we as fans have an opportunity to hear a glimpse of how much pain Ganondorf should be in regarding Urbosa and Riju’s very deliberate defiance of their own king and their people’s bloody history... The performance we get, for some reason, invokes images of that “while you were partying I studied the blade” meme. Like, he sounds like some edgy senior in high school that took himself too seriously and suffered a temper tantrum in the middle of the gymnasium because he feels disrespected by the other kids, or something. Like, yeah I’m being a little funny here, but what I mean is the performance is underplayed: like he’s acting with restraint, he’s holding himself back. Whether it’s because of Nintendo’s direction, or he’s a newer voice talent, or he genuinely doesn’t know the character well enough to know better -- I don’t know... And I’ll be totally real: my personal impression of this interpretation of Ganondorf could very well just be confirmation bias. I don’t think so, but I’ll acknowledge that it COULD be. I made a crude remark about how Ganondorf has been neutered by this presentation we got -- which I should be fair and acknowledge the fact that there ARE fans out there who have mentioned how they like the casting, voice, and performance -- but the truth of the matter is, Ganondorf has been in some really bad shape since Skyward Sword. Skyward Sword made some huge retcons to existing Zelda lore by introducing us to Hylia and Demise. Now, I like to write and study and analyze characters, but one doesn’t really need to be any kind of writing genius to understand how Demise’s existence and his actions by the end of the game completely rob Ganondorf of his agency and undermines the guy by overly-simplifying his motivations and by breaking down any dimension he previously had as a man, a leader, and a human. Ganondorf used to be such an interesting character: he wanted so much for the people he ruled over, cared about, and loved. Him and his mothers and his sisters experienced pain every day and saw that not far from their desert was a country protected and thriving off of a fair wind. His heart motivated him. His people motivated him. Pain motivated him. Wind Waker made it clear that his intentions were beautiful before Ganondorf had fallen to his own humanity. He took a knee to his own greed, and power was a seductive mistress.  The reason why the character Ganon eventually took the shape of Ganondorf in Ocarina of Time in the first place was so they could write stories that had a more human element and could thus encourage the player to consider that while the Triforce might represent black-and-white principles, the world itself is much more complicated than that and tends to be much more difficult to navigate which gives rise to more interesting adventures for Link to go on, and morally and emotionally complex challenges to face. But now that Demise’s stupid curse has stripped Ganondorf of any kind of meaningful nuance, Ganondorf has been tragically reduced to a character that’s feeling around in the dark: his culture and history has since turned its back on him so now his feet walk with no meaning. So, to compensate, Breath of the Wild saw the stakes raise and they went the route of the Oracle games where they re-introduced the idea where Ganon is now an evil that is just SOOO EVIL that it literally couldn’t fathom anything else EXCEPT rage and hate, as well as inflicting pain and suffering by lashing out in blind desperation to cause hurt and spread chaos. But then Nintendo went and struck that down just as fast as they re-introduced the concept in Breath of the Wild. So now we’re are quite literally left with a corpse: an empty husk of a really important character that once knew how to impact you with his time on the screen. This nearly unrecognizable shadow of Ganondorf demands that his followers “leave no survivors”, which is particularly disappointing to hear because it’s indicative of the underlying problem that’s been haunting this character since 2011.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(These three screenshots demonstrate a very important facet of Ganondorf’s character that Nintendo seems to have gotten wrong right off the bat in that trailer. He doesn’t want to destroy everything and leave no survivors. He wants to dominate and take what he feels rightfully belongs to him.)
But I really don’t mean to get into this huge whine-fest about Ganondorf, I’m just... I am just really bummed out because it’s the first time that we’ve seen Ganondorf (NOT Ganon) in a mainline Zelda game in almost seventeen years and it’s hard to see his return take this kind of shape. I love this character to death, I have so much adoration for Ganondorf in my heart and I know for a fact that this is gonna be a great game; I know Nintendo will absolutely not waste our times with Tears of the Kingdom, I know I’m gonna have a total fuckin’ blast playing the game and being able to come face-to-face with Ganondorf for the first time since I was eleven years old will definitely be a thrill of a lifetime.  But it sure as hell won’t be the same.

Gaming Roundup: The First Half of 2017
1 of 7
1. 'Horizon Zero Dawn'
Sony
Few things excite the gaming world like the blockbuster-out-of-nowhere, the Triple-A title not based on an existing IP. To that end, Horizon Zero Dawn isn’t just the most exciting game of 2017 so far, it’s the leading contender for Game of the Year honors, and might just fend off the barrage of late-year releases. HZD takes place in a mysterious future ruled by robot dinosaurs; mankind has been pushed back into a tribal state, fighting for survival in the wilderness. You control the game’s heroine, Aloy, who must learn to stalk and hunt the robot dinos with comparatively primitive technology. The gameplay is addictive and satisfying, the open world is enormous with seemingly endless side missions, and the graphics will have you wearing out the share button. This game is damn near perfect.
2 of 7
2. 'The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild'
Nintendo
The first and best reason to own a Nintendo Switch, Breath of the Wild gives you freedom of choice and exploration on a level that’s never been seen in the Zelda series. Pre-rendered backgrounds? Heh. Just about anything you see in Hyrule you can get to and climb, and discover new secrets to help you survive in this living, breathing world. The incredibly high difficulty only makes it that much more thrilling when you finally get the hang of it. Read more in our Switch review here.
3 of 7
3. 'Injustice 2'
WB Games
Director Ed Boon told us in this interview that crafting the follow-up to 2013’s smash hit Injustice: Gods Among Us was a matter of turning all the gameplay dials up to 10. Netherealm Studios did just that, and smashed it out of the park. The sequel is an all-around better game: faster gameplay with a deeper storyline, a bigger roster of characters, and a seemingly infinite customization system. It’s not just a must-have for DC comics fans, it’s the king of the fighting genre.
4 of 7
4. 'For Honor'
Ubisoft
No developer has ever pulled off medieval combat this well, and the brawler genre will never be the same. The deeper you get into For Honor, the more it demands precision and a full command over all possible methods of attack and defense. The storyline is short but serviceable, and teaches you just enough so you’ll be ready to get your feet wet in multiplayer, where a thriving community of enthusiasts awaits to show you that you ain’t seen nothing yet.
5 of 7
5. 'Star Trek Bridge Crew'
Ubisoft
For Trek fans, this is the definitive experience. Developed exclusively for VR on PC and PS4, Bridge Crew puts you in the captain’s chair, or the helm, or at the navigation computer, or any other station on the bridge. Mundane tasks like diverting power from the shields and weapons to the warp drive become exhilarating in VR. The learning curve is steep, but once you become adept at pushing your ship around the galaxy, you’re going to want to stick around for quite a while.
6 of 7
6. 'Resident Evil 7: Biohazard'
Capcom
Long gone is the gonzo, bullet-laden schlock of Resident Evil 6. RE: 7 is classic white-knuckle horror down to its core. In search of your long-lost wife, you set off for her last-known location, a creepy, rundown dump of a house on the bayou. Fast-paced shooting has been replaced by genuinely chilling quiet moments that are strung together at such a perfect pace your heart will be pounding out of your chest by the time the action finally comes. This is a masterful reset for the series, one elevated even further if you play in VR mode on PS4.
7 of 7
7. GEAR: Rig 4 VR
Plantronics
We tested all PSVR games using the lightweight, affordable Rig 4VR audio headset made by Plantronics. The headset delivers great quality sound for the price ($70 at Bestbuy.com) and its lightweight, elastic design helps it fit perfectly over the PSVR headset. No more ear buds or trying to awkwardly fit a set of standard gaming cans over the VR hardware.

Dropped Feathers
The first time Legend meets Wild, the kid nearly takes his head off.
The Chain comes through a portal near a particularly ugly stable and it’s the easiest place to start.
The group draws glances, but Legend wanders around the edge of the building, drinking in the new landscape. It’s here he bumps into a stranger, whose sword is out as he spins and points at Legend’s throat.
“What the hell!” He jumps back, wings puffing up in an unconscious threat display. Is it a bandit? Someone who means harm?
The stranger tilts his head but then puts his sword away. “You startled me.”
“I startled you? I’m not the one waving swords in people’s faces!”
The kid winces, but the wary, calculating look in his eyes doesn’t fade.
By the time they wrangle out that the stranger is Wild, a new hero to join them, Legend’s planted him firmly in the same category as Warriors: a loner.
Wild’s addition changes little of the group’s makeup. Wind and Sky, the two seabirds, stick together on the ground and glide happily alone. Twilight follows Time around like a lost dog, always eager to follow orders. Warriors prefers his alone time.
Four chatters enough to be multiple companions on his own, although Time and Twilight are the only two who indulge him on a regular basis. Legend likes Four’s company; if only it just came with a little more silence.
Despite his prickly attitude, Legend is a fairly social bird. Because of the attitude, it’s a rare indulgence.
Hyrule likes pairs and is perfectly happy to latch into Legend and stay there. Legend, for his part, delights in someone he hasn’t driven away.
Wild goes Warriors route of sticking to himself, but unlike the captain he doesn’t look happy about it. It’s closer to the feeling Legend has when he wants to join in with the others but holds back.
Twilight and Time make an effort to include the newest hero, so he’s not without chances to bond. He just…doesn’t take them.
When they preen in the evenings, even Warriors allows Time to help him with the feathers he can’t reach. Wild turns down help from all of them, including the captain’s offer.
Unable to reach all his feathers, the slightly dingy blue dull further. He can fly just fine but Legend catches Time throwing concerned looks in his direction.
“Aren’t magpies supposed to be social?” Legend stands, hands on his hips, blocking Wild’s path of slinking away to his own corner to eat again.
“Not up for company,” comes the mumble. His wings hunch into his back, making him look even smaller.
Legend isn’t falling for it. “C’mon, even Warriors eats with us and he loves his own company a little too much.”
“I heard that!”
The veteran ignores Warriors jibe.
Wild just shakes his head and edges around him. “Another time.” Then he ducks past and scrambles up into a tree, bowl still balanced in one hand.
“Let him go,” Time calls. He doesn’t look happy about it.
Wild continues to avoid the group, avoid preening, and thrashes through the air like an ungainly chick. Sometimes he’ll slide in behind someone and his flight stabilizes. Then, almost like his attention slipped, he ducks up or down and resumes the constant flapping.
They fight monsters and switch eras. The faint hope on Wild’s face dies as they enter another unfamiliar realm. His wings are getting rattier every day. Time tries both gentle and commanding, but Wild climbs a tree faster than Time can follow. A cloud of dirty feathers falls in his wake.
Time stands and glares are the pine for a long time.
Hyrule, gentle, attentive Hyrule, is taking an interest in the newest hero. Legend can’t help the slight jealousy as attention shifts away from him. Hyrule is a pair bird and Legend is the other half of that pair. While he might like some more social interaction, he won’t give up his closest friend.
Mostly, Hyrule watches Wild and Legend watches Hyrule. Soon, Legend is watching the champion, too, just to see what’s so fascinating.
It’s how he notices what Hyrule already saw; Wild attempting to preen and plucking ruined feathers. The shake of his fingers gets worse each time.
The feathers, poorly cared for, are coming out too fast for a molt. It’ll start affecting his flying soon.
Time stages an intervention when it becomes clear Wild isn’t going to give in on his own. He sits the champion down and explains how they understand worries about trust and safety. There’s no shame in accepting a little help from time to time.
Wild’s glare only grows with each word. “Don’t touch my wings.” Then he stalks off.
The intervention is a failure. Time grits his teeth and snaps for Twilight to come spar with him. The fury of the mock fight takes even the hawk off guard.

No one is in a hurry to move on from Legend’s house. Access to beds—even in limited supply—a kitchen, and a bath are all luxuries the Chain indulges in. Wild certainly doesn’t mind; it’s nice to curl up in the nest again.
Legend and Ravio’s nest is huge; too large for two birds, really. But there are so many blankets and pillows that he flops across them with delight. Hyrule purrs contentedly as he wiggles into the pile.
This time, when Ravio ends up next to Wild, he isn’t uncomfortable. He extends one wing over the bowerbird, the same as he would for Legend. Trust may be slow, but Legend trusts Ravio and he’s willing to make an exception for new flock.
Legend, however, seems to be in denial about his very obvious crush on Ravio. The fact that the bowerbird wears his flockmate’s feathers should indicate something, yet Legend puffs and flaps around Ravio like a new chick.
“Hyrule,” Wild whispers. Legend and Ravio are both up—or something resembling up in Legend’s case—and Wild stays in the nest with Hyrule.
“Hmm?”
“Do you know what the feathers in Ravio’s hair mean?”
Hyrule’s eyes are slit and he pulls a wing over his face. “No, but I’d guess it means flock or something.”
“Yeah, but what if it’s more? They seem like they’d be together, but they are just…circling around each other.”
This brings a slightly wider blink. “Together? Like, together together?”
The magpie can’t help but give the traveler a flat look. “Seriously? If Ledge twittered over Ravio anymore he’d expire.”
“Guess that's true. Okay, what should we do?”
Excellent. Wild leans closer, raising his wings to form a tent over them. “We’ve got to keep our eye out for opportunities.”
Said opportunity comes a lot faster than expected. When Wild drags Hyrule from the nest, they find Legend and Ravio in one of the sitting rooms. The furniture has been moved out and buckets of paint and brushes are scattered across the covered floor.
“No more blue?” Wild asks. It’s too bad, it was a nice shade of blue.
“Neutral,” Ravio chirps. “That way everyone is happy.”
“Blue is the superior shade,” Legend says.
The room quiets and they all turn to stare at the bowerbird. “I didn’t say that.”
“I heard you,” Ravio says. “If blue is better, we don’t have to change it.”
“I didn’t say that!” Legend screeches.
The merchant backs down, but there’s a smile playing on the edge of his face. Wild shoots a glance at Hyrule, who winks. He generally keeps his mimicry to songs, but it seems he’s in the mood for chaos today.
