Box Office Report - CARS 3 Takes First; WONDER WOMAN Stands Strong

Pixar is no stranger to opening in first place at the box-office and their latest attempt, Cars 3, landed at the top spot in its debut weekend. The third chapter in the adventures of race car, Lightning McQueen, secured first place with an estimated $53.6 million dollar opening. It’s the lowest opening in the Cars franchise and signals that the series is…slowly running out of gas. However, we can expect to continue seeing the characters in all other forms of multimedia in the years to come, as the merchandising is what has kept the series afloat.

Wonder Woman was the most surprising development of the weekend. In its third week of release, the superhero movie made an additional $41.2 million dollars, which qualified it for second place. However, the most shocking figure is the low audience drop off from the previous week of less than 30%. Previous DCEU films plummeted in the weeks following their opening, but Wonder Woman is proving to be a bigger hit than anyone had anticipated, including Warner Bros.

Third place belonged to the Tupac Shakur biopic, All Eyez On Me, which exceeded early projections with an estimated $26.4 million dollars. It fell way short of the $60 million dollar opening of Straight Outta Compton, yet managed a respectable opening despite mixed reviews. It’s likely that the movie will fall quickly down the charts in the coming weeks, as several big name movies hit theaters.

The Mummy fell to fourth place in its second week of release. The movie made an estimated $14.5 million dollars on the heels of director Alex Kurtzman claiming that they made the film for an international audience. It seems that it will need the global box-office to justify a continuation of the “Dark Universe” that they are trying to assemble. It will be interesting to see if Universal buries their future plans.

Rounding out the top five films is 47 Meters Down, the survival horror movie about a pair of sisters trapped underwater in a shark cage. It made an estimated $11.2 million dollars in its opening weekend, despite underwhelming marketing in a busy summer season. The movie occupies a similar space as last year’s The Shallows and found similar success for the modestly budgeted thriller.
