Krakow trip Day 2-2 Posted @withregram • @hibarbal Krakow の旅。

#WawelDragon According to a #Polish legend, a cruel dragon that ate the citizens of #Kraków lived in a cave at the foot of Wawel Hill until it was slaughtered by a wise shoemaker. Although there are several versions of the end of this popular Polish legend, the most famous tells the story of a devious shoemaker that fooled the dragon by placing sulfur under the skin of a dead goat. The dragon ate the skin and died poisoned by the sulfur. Thanks to the cobbler, the inhabitants of the region could finally live freely. Dragon’s Den Nowadays, the lair of the dragon is open to the public in #summer. Visitors will access the cave through an old well and descend 21 meters to explore this unique site. The cave runs all the way to the banks of Vistula river.  The Dragon At the exit of the cave is a large dragon-shaped #statue carved in 1971. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions, especially for children, as the dragon expells fire out of its mouth every five minutes. The Wawel Dragon (Polish: Smok Wawelski) is a famous #dragon in Polish mythology who lived in a cave at the foot of #Wawel Hill on the banks of the Vistula River. One of the many popular stories about the dragon takes place in #Kraków during the reign of King Krakus, the city's mythical founder. In the legend, the dragon terrifies local villagers by destroying their houses and eating up their young daughters. Desperate to solve the problem, King Krakus promises his daughter Wanda's hand to any brave man who can defeat the dragon. A cobbler named Skuba takes up the challenge and stuffs a lamb with sulphur for the dragon to eat. Skuba leaves the lamb near the dragon cave and the unwary beast devours the bait. Soon after, the dragon's thirst grows unbearable and he drinks so much water from the River Vistula that he explodes from the uncontainable volume. wawel dragon #waweldragon Poland’s Wawel Cathedral holds the remains of a number of Polish royals as well as some of the country’s most famous religious art, but the real attraction at the massive religious compound is the hanging bundle of bones which are rumored to have belonged to a local dragon. Hanging next to the cathedral’s entrance are the “real” bones of Smok Waweleski, the local dragon. They are chained together in a random jumble, hanging high above the main doors. Before the city was founded Smok was said to live in a cave under one of Wawel’s rolling hills. Smok was of the classic maiden-devouring ilk and the local people even had to put out a fresh young woman each month to quell his appetite. According to legend he was finally killed by a local hero (or a local apprentice depending on the version), who fed Smok a lamb laced with sulfer. This made the beast so thirsty that he drank water from the river until he exploded. As delightful as it would be if the remains were truly mythological, the bones are actually thought to be fossilized whale bones or mammoth bones. Regardless of their true origin, they have been there for centuries and are credited with magical powers.
