people who say this shit are just retarded and/or soulless. it isn't difficult to comprehend. people like to feel like a part of something bigger than themselves. to view themselves as part of a larger narrative. to have some share in a collective's glory. and people are a product of their nation's history in a very real sense. their nation's history is their own history and is intimately tied to their own identity, grounding them in the world. it may not be "rational" but so what? life isn't about being perfectly rational. lots of irrational things give a sense of meaning, community, identity, and inspiration to people.
