"Strawberry tried all he could to help me. He spoke very well about the decency and comradeship natural to animals. "Animals don't behave like men," he said. "If they have to fight, they fight; and if they have to kill, they kill. But they don't sit down and set their wits to work to devise ways of spoiling other creatures' lives and hurting them. They have dignity and animality."
Holly recounts how Strawberry addressed the Efrafan Council From Watership Down chapter 27: 'You Can't Imagine It Unless You've Been There' by Richard Adams
The strawberries pictured above are wild strawberries. The fruits are much smaller than the kind you find in shops, but the plants are far less fussy and require very little effort to maintain.
In my garden they serve the purpose of a low-level ground cover plant, which easily spreads about by sprouting runners, and they look quite pretty between the taller wild flowers and trees.
The leaves are also edible (though in my opinion taste quite bland). They will cope with shade but flower and fruit much better if they get a decent amount of sun (the ones pictured here seem to thrive very well in partial shade and have even managed to produce some fruit underneath an evergreen spruce tree).
My children love them.

El-ahrairah, your people cannot rule the world, for I will not have it so. All the world will be your enemy, Prince With A Thousand Enemies, and whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you, digger, listener, runner, prince with the swift warning. Be cunning and full of tricks and your people shall never be destroyed

There is not a day or night but a doe offers her life for her kittens, or some honest captain of Owsla his life for his Chief Rabbit's. Sometimes it is taken, sometimes it is not. But there is no bargain, for here, what is, is what must be.

thinking abt the horror inherent to cornfields again. maybe I’m just british and have never seen cornfields (I know we DO grow it over here but I haven’t like. seen it) but the thought of an annual crop plant growing THAT TALL (average 2.5m/8ft) for us to just eat the grain feels viscerally wrong. wheat is like 1.2m/4ft you can exist in a wheat field but corn will swallow you whole

The Watership Down rabbits removed an additional 0.1 nanometers constructing their warren, although that was mostly soil. British rabbits have historically mined very little coal; the sole rabbit-run coal plant was shut down in the 1990s.
UK Coal [Explained]
Transcript
[The following formula is shown (with the divisor below a horizontal line in the comic, rather than inside parentheses):] UK total coal production (1853-present, UK DESNZ) / ((coal seam density) × (UK land area)) = 25 billion tonnes / (1.3kg/L × 240,000km²) ≈ 3 inches
[Cueball is standing to the right of the formula, upon a dotted line representing the prior ground level. Two arrows indicate that the dotted line is 3 inches above the solid line that is the current ground level.] [Caption below the panel:] The UK shut down their last coal power plant today, which means that over the course of the industrial revolution, they dug up and burned an average of 3 inches of their country.

Nap Away
For @astrangersummer week 2: afternoon nap
steddie | 976 words | gen/no warnings | college/modern
Read also on ao3
Tuesdays and Wednesdays are Steve’s weekends. He’s a hairstylist, a junior one at that, and works Thursday through to Monday. He and Eddie have no overlapping days off, Eddie’s from the bar falling on Sunday and Mondays, but Steve has his Tuesdays and Wednesdays. He goes grocery shopping, gives the plants of his their weekly watering should their routine require, doctor and dentists appointments. This Wednesday so happens to be Steve’s rare empty day. He’s already run the dishwasher and laundry, both audibly going in the kitchen. The bathroom is clean, they’d already agreed on pizza for dinner so no need for prep. Everything was right in the world. One glance at the clock told Steve, nested into a pile of blankets and pillows on the couch with a book, that Eddie should be home from his noon class shortly. The sound of keys in the doorknob confirmed that fact not even five minutes later.
“Heey, Stevie,” Eddie hums, bag dropping to the ground by their door as he toes his shoes off.
“Hi, sweetheart,” Steve muses back, dogearing the page. He pushes his glasses to the top of his head. “How was class?”
Eddie holds a finger to his lips with closed eyes. Steve understands. “I’ve gotta be back on campus in a few hours.”
“How many?”
“Three.”
“Right, thank you,” Steve hums. He adjusts his body to make room on the couch and tucks his book under the pillow beside him. “Sorry I forgot. How can I help you?”
Eddie blushes, kicking his feet up a little as he steps further into the living room to the beat of the music Steve’s got playing through the TV. He speaks through a yawn-- “I dunno.”
“Sleepy?”
“Yeah.”
“Hungry?”
“Not really.”
“Need to do any work before class?”
“Surprisingly, no,” Eddie grins when his shins hit the couch. Steve reaches up for Eddie’s hips with both hands, holds him firmly, and presses a gentle kiss through his shirt just under Eddie’s belly button. “Whatcha reading?”
“Still trying to get through Watership Down.”
“Fuck yeah, baby, let me know if there’s anymore words you need help with?”
Steve nods. He moves his hands from Eddie’s sides up to grab his hands, tugging down at him. Eddie understands, sitting where Steve’s made space for him. Eddie yawns again and goes where he’s pulled until he’s flush against Steve’s body. The warmth on the couch grows as the shifting sun hits the front window just right and flashes rainbows through the lounge. It’s beautiful and safe and most importantly, theirs.
“How’s your day been, love?”
“Calm,” Steve hums lightly as he cards his fingers through Eddie’s hair. The dark green block of color taking up the left half of his bangs would be ready to be colored in the next few weeks, with his roots grown out a half inch already, but currently it was a tonedeaf and seasick teal. Sometimes Steve would find himself overcritical of his work, particularly on Eddie. Now, like it had been in the short months they’d been living together, his mind was quiet. Steve picked apart a few curls that clumped densely together.
“Good,” Eddie says, yawning yet again.
“When do you need to leave?”
Eddie takes a peek across the room at the same clock Steve had. “Class is at 5, I’ll be out at 6:15, I think. So leave around 4:30?”
“I’ll drop you off, we can leave quarter till. Go on and nap a bit, Eds.”
“You’re so chivalrous,” Eddie grins like a dope up at Steve. He nuzzles into Steve’s shirt, nose poking through the space between the buttons. Steve lets out a breathy giggle and pushes his face back. “I’m so lucky!”
“Yeah, you are.”
“You sure you’re comfortable?” Eddie asks, voice turning soft and genuine.
“Well, here, hang on.” Steve slides out from under Eddie with only a few grumbles, returning a minute later with a fresh glass of water and a small bowl of pre-cut strawberries with powdered sugar on top. Eddie whines again when he’s forced to hold himself up enough for Steve to return to his previous spot, but is quickly soothed by a few strawberries and a kiss on the head. “Alright, now we’re good. Nap away, my love.”
“I need to be up by 4 at least…” Eddie mumbles, all but a whisper. Steve nods as he wraps his arm around Eddie and pulls him close. He doesn’t wake Eddie until 4:15, a solid two hour nap in Steve’s opinion, with a kind nudge of his knee and kiss above Eddie’s ear after returning Watership Down to the coffee table. Eddie rouses slowly with a pathetic whine.
“Steeevieeeee,” He cries, wriggling around on Steve’s lap. “Sleeeeepyyyy…!”
“I know, baby,” Steve hums and shifts again so Eddie has no comfortable resting spot anymore. He sits up and rubs aggressively at his eyes. “Come on, tie your hair up and we can take a quick shower before I drop you off.”
“Hot?” Eddie peeks out from behind his knuckles.
“Yeah, Eds,” he laughs softly, already reaching for the hair tie around Eddie’s wrist. “Now, hop up, let’s go.”
Steve doesn’t even have time to dry his hair before they have to rush off, Eddie making it to class exactly on time. If they’d gotten a little carried away in the shower, who can blame them? But by the time Eddie returns home again there’s a hot meat lovers pizza on the coffee table, an episode of Jeopardy queued on TV, and Steve perched yet again in the middle of a blanket puddle on the couch. There’s no disagreements when Eddie further investigates and finds Steve in one of Eddie’s old band hoodies and just his boxers, limp hair sending thin clumps of waves over his forehead. Yeah, Eddie’s a lucky guy.

SUMMITCLAN CHRONICLES (SCC) is an 18+ roleplay inspired by xenofiction like Warrior Cats, Watership Down, Ratha's Creature, Zorba and Lucky, and the New York State Adirondacks.
Life is hard in the mountains. Creatures fight for every mouthful - for every birth is a death.
But does it have to be cruel forever, always? The cats of Summitclan came together not for battle but for the color of the leaves, the shine of the moon, the hush of fallen snow; together their ancestors brought forth a world where cats have carved a gentle soul into the slope of the harsh mountains. Where food is hidden away to feed the sick when the cold times come; where there are plants that quicken the healing of splintered bones; where one's newborns are always safe and loved. A kitten of Summitclan is a kitten that was told through act and word how wanted they were - and an elder never passes alone.
Life was hard in the mountains. So they changed how life was lived.
Could Summitclan be the perfect refuge, high on those wooded mountain peaks, in the eye of those ancestors who cared so deeply?
We offer you..
• A calm, loving, adult Warrior Cats community that assumes the best in you & others.
• A unique single-character model where every member has one cat with whom they experience Summitclan - in birth, through life, and in death.
• Exclusive lore and worldbuilding that must be taught to new generations & incomers.
• A system of real-time years and seasons with extended days and nights for extra roleplay time, with weather reflecting the Adirondacks themselves.
• A slow-burn style experience where characters are expanded upon as if they were living beings, evolving as they experience, conflict, learn, reflect and adapt.
• A series of unique festivals year-round to bring the community and clan together as a unit, each themed after a season and its associated needs.
• Resources and prompts members can access to give them ideas for interactions & relationships during slow periods or writer's blockages.
• Staff with high expectations and explicit instructions on how to settle disagreements and keep members lighthearted.
• A support system for less experienced roleplayers to learn from more experienced members.
• A stable design made to last beyond any single member, easily passed down so that it does not abruptly die.
And before you join, I want to inform you ...
This roleplay features feral cats living wild in the Adirondack Mountain Range. Everyday activities including hunting small to medium animals, possibly fending off small to large threats, cats being born + possibly not surviving long after, and cats recieving varying injuries, contracting varying sicknesses, or even losing their lives in tragic ways. All things will be handled with grace, and the roleplay is designed to be balanced rather than leaning toward good or bad events, but you will not be able to avoid these themes upon joining.
Who Are You Looking For?
We are looking for people that are creative, gentle, patient, open-minded, friendly and considerate. If you're someone who indulges in lightheartedness just as often as you do the dark side, and can see the gentle edge in everything, this might be for you...
Our Application:
Grand Opening applications have closed! This area will soon have a link to an app for kittens & loners.

I went to see the real life location of Watership Down last weekend! And not only is it a beautiful place and we had beautiful weather, but I found an unexpected gift waiting for me
Now, the old beach hanger mentioned in the story isn’t there anymore, but there’s a new tree planted in honour of the story. Someone has even carved the names of the rabbits into the fence. And under this tree, I found a box with a little packet of stickers.
Tumblr media
I cannot tell you how delighted I was that @lyndseyillustration had thought to place a treasure box full of her merch under the tree. I literally have her pin badge of El-ahrairah on my Etsy account and on a Christmas wish list.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Finding these stickers made the whole trip magical. There’s not a lot of people in this fandom, but boy do we have quality!
Unfortunately, my packet was the last one in the box, so I took the box home, as instructed. I will be reusing it, and just having it on my shelf makes me smile every time. Mainly because Bigwig is scowling back at me.
It was a lovely trip, and I would recommend. Take a picnic and just go watch the birds, I saw a kestrel and so many kites up there. If anyone wants directions, I can make a post of how to get there.

Campion
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"It was Campion's principal duty to search the outskirts of Efrafa at morning and evening and to report anything new... An expert tracker, he missed little or nothing and was one of the very few rabbits for whom General Woundwort felt a genuine respect."
From Watership Down chapter 34: 'General Woundwort' by Richard Adams
There are several varieties of campion; the plants pictured above are known as red campion, though the flowers are actually pink. They are happy in partial shade and provide food for a variety of insects including bees, butterflies, hoverflies and moths.

Ok so here's what i got for the DHMIS x watership down thingy so far I have the chief and owsla
(Quick watership down lore for my dhmis girlies.♡♡ in watership down the chief rabbit is the leader. In control and overseer of the Warren. Below them is the captain rabbit who's in charge of the owsla. The captain will replace the chief if the chief dies. The owsla is a group of rabbits the number of the group is dependent on the size of the Warren. They look out for danger and take care of warnings and food. Rabbits name thier young off things they see or feel. Animals. Plants. Herbs. Colors. Words. I tried to keep the nature element with the names while also still leading into the origional puppet characters vibe) -what I remember from watership lore-
-THE SCARED WARREN OWSLA- (I doodled them but it's dark and my cameras dookie yall are getting descriptions.)
PATCHES -[RAH] Chief Rabbit (Lesley): a long rabbit with an uncanny feeling a movement to her. She is bigger than many other rabbits and her ears touch the sky. Her fur has many diffrent colors. her eyes share the color of blood, dirt and grass. (Lesleys not a rabbit at all. She's a Hare)
RATEYES - Captain (Roy) : a velvety lop rabbit. Or at least he was. Due to a disease lost patches of his fur and grown horned warts. And due to battles his ears are scraped and scars festering. Dispite his skinny quiet appearance he is violent. And shouldn't be in power honestly
THE OWSLA:
Cloudy (sketchbook): an albino doe with a thick black stripe going down her back.
Passed (Tony): a dark grayish blue buck with black legs and white paws. A black mark on his neck somewhat resembles a bowtie.
Four (Colin) : a strange hyper rabbit with the letter 04 on his haunch.. he says he's from a place where man are most evil. Yet he laughs about it as if it were a joke (I made colin an escaped lab rabbit so he could have wires/odd scars resambleing wires)
Dirt (Briefcase): a hard worker! A brown rabbit with dark spots on his eyes that kinda resamble glasses. He is almost too energetic about his job to the point its annoying.
Tracks (Choo Choo): a very old rabbit. Was most likely part of the owsla even before patches (lesley) joined. Though hes forgetful and weak. Many ask patches to kick him off the owsla but she always laughs and refuses. Some say shes sick and finds it funny how he puts the Warren in danger. others say she might have a soft spot for what could have been her mentor. Though the before is more likely true.
Lightning (Electracy) : a small she that's tears though the hills with speed like no other. She is covered with small dark grey spots. (Ment to reusable screws sorta) her pupils are misshapen. Though she can see normally dispite this. (Her motor eyes were far to iconic to not include)
K yap session over. for now.
I plan on drawing them more throughly maybe. And drawing the normal Warren buns.

Feb 21, 2024 - Wednesday
Just spending my days working, reading, and steam-pressing 5 months worth of laundry (nbd 💅🏽) I love the art so much in this book. Illustrations for books- especially ones that take place in natural settings- are always so magical. On the right is a snake plant leaf that my dad gave to me as a propagation project 🌱

Hiking Journal
November 11 — Raven’s End
Yamnuska — Îyâmnathka, “flat-faced mountain” in Nakoda — has got to be one of the most iconic mountains in the Rockies. It’s known as a sacred mountain which watches over a rich medicine foraging plain. Heading into the Bow Valley it’s basically the first rock of the Rockies, watching over the wide valley through which the river, railway, new highway, and old road wind in parallel.
Tumblr media
It was grey and overcast in that November way on this Remembrance Day, but pleasantly warm for the season, rising to a high of 11° if I remember. The plan had been at some point to do a hike with work friends but they called it in so I drove out on my own, listening to The Apache Relay and a podcast about Herman Hesse’s Siddhartha as I left the city and rolled over the foothills (I’d just finished reading it, was pretty good.) Speaking of books, that’s why Raven’s End, the eastern buttress of Yamnuska’s great cliff, lives rent-free in my head.
Tumblr media
See, Ben Gadd is a legend. Most of the times in the last thirty years that anyone has looked up an animal, plant, mushroom, or geological formation in the Rockies, it’s probably been in Gadd’s practically biblical Handbook of the Canadian Rockies. In his full page entry on corvus corax he makes it pretty clear what his favourite clever local bird species is. If there was any further question, he also wrote Raven’s End, sort of the Albertan answer to Watership Down. I don’t know if the novel is named after the buttress or if the book named the buttress. The book was published in 2001, and I haven’t figured out if the name was used to refer to the spot on the mountain before then or if Gadd named it.
Tumblr media
Anyway, I read this book a half-dozen times growing up. In the story, a raven wakes up with from a fall into a bush at the base of Yamnuska’s cliff with no memory aside from his name, Colin. He falls in with Zack and Molly and all the other ravens of the Raven’s End flock. He speaks with the animals of the valley, wonders about the strange two-legged visitors, and hears the voice of the wind, leading to an adventure rooted equally in spirituality and magic and in the ecology of the mountains. I can’t spoil what he does discover about his history. Go pick up a copy and find out.
Tumblr media
Most of the trail up to Raven’s End is pretty gradual and easy. Being a public holiday, it was super busy as well. Families with a half-dozen young children, couples with two or three dogs. I had bear spray and layers and food, as if I was ready for a proper backcountry walk, but it was more bustling than most downtown streets. Little grew in the late autumn, but plenty of red wild rose hips stood out at the tips of thorny shrubs. I did chew one. Don’t tell Parks. A couple sat on the bluffs overlooking the wide reserve land in the rolling hills below and eastward, performing a ceremony with a tobacco pipe and shakers. I heard their singing washing over the woods before I actually saw them as I walked past and shared a nod.
Tumblr media
Treeless montane aspen gave way to subalpine firs. The ground changed from dissolving brown leaves to red needle duff. A little bit of snow stuck to the ground at the elevation of Raven’s End itself, very thin and packed down, no obstacle of any sort, just a reminder that winter was near. Arguably here, but I don’t feel like arguing. More importantly: I did, in fact, see the ravens!
Tumblr media
The start of the cliff is the usual and my planned turnaround point, but as i ate my human sandwich sitting on a rock, a group of church ladies chatting with me said that it was as worth at least going through the first slim crack of the scrambly section for the view beyond. I love climbing through cracks and dramatic rocks like this, so they were totally right.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beyond the chimney you can look down to CMC Valley (I don’t know what this stands for, but it’s the valley behind Yamnuska; I may do that loop sometime) and, right to left, the twin peaks of Mount Wendell and the more westerly Morrowmount. Yes I switched the usual reading direction to end with MORROWMOUNT, because it sounds like something out of a fantasy novel.
Tumblr media
Looking up at the backside of Yamnuska it look easy enough to scramble the route, it’s popular to scramble, and I do really want to do that, but not in the snow, not alone, not with a warm but forceful Chinook wind blasting from the west, and not with the last interpretive sign mentioning risk of death three times on the one sign. I turned around and descended, plunge-running past the kids and dogs back to the car and home.

Name translation thoughts, phonetical or by meaning.
Phonetical preserves the cultural context and generally applies best for settings with naming systems where even most of the common names don't have their meanings widely known, so looking them up is expected whether in the original language or a translation.
But having been majorly focused on Warriors for a long time where most names are from common-ish words with clear definitions and not like archaic, meaning translations work best there, and this method comes to mind first. Though, technically they are already such translations in the original text, or we'd have Watership Down style conlang. Plus the only cultural context to names present in wc is in the structure, with no root language difference.
So, got used to meaning translations, and they were fun to work with in choosing words and such. Semi-forgot it's common practice to do phonetical translations for a while. So before the official translations came out, was rolling with a meaning translation for Basil since 1. that's clearly a plant, for the flowerboy 2. not that common a name like Hazel... Though perhaps only by my experience 3. 羅勒 works very well, 羅 as a first name is common, 勒 means strangle/restrict. The official translation is of course phonetic, as otherwise would make his stand out next to Aubrey and Kel's names (Hero is an exception for reasons), though I didn't realise that and was disappointed.
Then, getting into HnK. Did not start with the English translation and 法斯法菲萊特 of the early fan translations was a pain to read. Alright, phosphophyllite isn't a mineral everyone knows either, but it's the same stuff with diamond, obsidian, especially amethyst with the numbers get really ridiculous. But it made Cinnabar stand out with an actual(ly understandable) mineral name and be sort of like Kongo, like they do in the original. The distinction is of note as vol9 bonus material comments on it, and other gems with kanji names still use loanwords from English. (Obsidian, Jade, Hemimorphite...) Flipped for English translation with Shinsha being meaningless. While having all the gems use definition-translated names loses this tidbit in English. It's not entirely lost for the Chinese translation as it's like the more archaic name for Cinnabar, like how Adamant is kinda archaic for diamond, but it does show how phonetic translation could be important.
Still wouldn't want to suffer through remembering a whole slog of meaningless characters for names though, especially when they get really long and people have stopped using the proper name mark (underlining names).
And still using Luo Strangle for Basil in my head cuz it's funny.
