Permaculture Instructor Andrew Millison travels to the village of Laporiyah in Rajasthan India to see the 45 year water harvesting and community development project spearheaded by waterman Laxman Singh. We spent 2 days touring the village with Laxman and his team, including well known academic Vishnu Sharma. Vishnu has specialized in the revitalization of Rajasthan during his long career and we were very lucky to have him as Laxman's interpreter. This village has experienced such an incredible transformation due to the work of the villagers, it is hard to express in one video.

Yeah, tetrahedral maps are great! I think it's mainly because when the map is centred on the north pole you sort of get three "prongs" of land extending from the centre (South America, Africa, and Australasia/Oceania), which then obviously fit into the three points of the Lee Tetrahedron's resulting triangle really well.
This manages to keep most of the land away from the distortion points at the centre of each side and at the corners, with the noticeable exceptions of the area around Myanmar & Bangladesh, Hawaii, and Antarctica.
I'll put the rest of this under a cut because it got quite long.
There are a couple of different ways to fix this, centring it on 65掳N 30掳E rather than the pole manages to put Antarctica back in one piece and now the only noticeable distortion is that Sri Lanka and southern India are way too big, (There are probably better options than this for the centre but I couldn't find them)
Of course, you might also notice that the three "prongs" are really closer to 90掳 apart than 120掳, which is where the popularity of octahedral projections like Cahill's and Waterman's projections probably comes from, but I quite like the Peirce Quincuncial for this, and if you take the top octant and split and rotate it round, you get a layout very similar to the tetrahedron. The most noticeable distortion here is probably Papua New Guinea being slightly to big.
(And like in this post from last week, you can also move the bit of Antarctica at the bottom to get this)
A lot of people have tried to use Lee's Tetrahedron as a base and either rearrange it into a rectangle (Markley and CALM) or a half hexagon (Lee-Concialdi and Lee-Xarax), it's just a really good projection if you need something conformal with low area distortion.
The only oblique aspect rearrangement of the Peirce Quincuncial I've seen is Grieger's Triptychal (see the Markley and CALM link).
A polyhedral projection I really want to see is one based off a rhombic dodecahedron, a polyhedron with twelve rhombi for sides.
It's net isn't particularly pretty because the rhombi it uses don't tesselate, however this paper does a really interesting thing by compressing the net to squares rather than rhombi.
It's original use case is as replacement for cubemaps which can cause a loss of visual quality where the distortion is large, but I want to see what it would look like for a world map.
The projection they're using for each face (gnomonic I think) isn't conformal so you get discontinuities between face, but you might be able to change it so it is, sort of like how the Peirce Quincuncial uses right angle triangles for each octant rather than equilateral triangles like the Cahill while still maintaining conformality, but I don't know how I'd work out the maths for that, iirc Peirce did it with complex analysis.

Do you have any recommendations for fountain pens? I was looking at some but i dont know if the ones i was looking at are any good lol
OH YOU ASK BISCUIT ABOUT HYPERFIXATION? YOU ASK THEM AND ARE GENUINELY INTERESTED? HUG FOR LIBELELLE. HUG FOR TEN THOUSAND YEARS. you will regret this i am so sorry in advance
anyway, the most recommended beginner pens are the lamy safari and pilot metropolitan. i personally don't like the metro (the grip section is slippery and makes my fingers inky, and the ink capacity is tiny teeny baby size), and i have never owned a lamy safari, but some people hate the triangle grip. their nibs can also vary greatly in quality, so buying one is a gamble, but a lot of people seem to like their safaris (and metros, some people swear by the metropolitan)
if you just want something cheap, you can try the platinum preppy - they're reliable for the price. the catch: the pen body will crack after about a year. they are not built to last, but if you wanna just test out if you like the (BEGINNER) fountain pen writing experience, then they're a fine choice
personally, i'm a big fan of the twsbi eco, but they are also prone to cracking over time and they get into a lot of shitty corporate slapfights with other pen companies who make piston fillers (my favorite kind of filling mechanism, so much ink capacity [but harder to clean!]). their nibs are reliable and juicy. you can also try the twsbi swipe for a very similar experience with a... cheaper price and look to match. the swipe comes with the same awesome nibs though
there's also the kaweco sport, which a lot of people swear by, but i've never owned because i personally find it ugly and unappealing (SORRY). it's a pocket pen, which means it's tiny when closed but full length when posted (when you put the cap on the end), making it a versatile everyday pen for people who have, like, jobs and stuff. i haven't heard many complaints about the quality control with the sports' nibs. i personally don't think it's the best pen for someone JUST starting out because of its status as a pocket pen, but again, lots of people swear by it. the ink capacity is piss tiny
there's also, of course, the pilot kakuno! cheaper than the pilot metro with what sounds like a reliable nib. i've never owned one, but they seem good for students and the like. it has a fun little smiley face on the nib =) because it's a pilot, the ink capacity is PISS TINY. but it's a good pen.
a word of warning. do NOT buy the ooly splendid. i repeat, DO NOT BUY THE OOLY SPLENDID. cleaning it is a NIGHTMARE because it has a little wick in the nib. like a marker. imagine trying to get all the ink out of the tip of a marker. it is a nightmare. do not buy the ooly splendid it sucks it doesn't even have a good seal so all the ink gets all boogery on the nib. bad
SOME NOTES: lamy and pilot use proprietary cartridges/converters, which basically means you can only use their way of refilling your pen. converters let you use whatever ink you want, which i greatly prefer. kaweco uses international standard short cartridges and converters, which gives you more options for cartridges if you choose to go that route. twsbi uses the piston fill mechanism, which has the most ink capacity by far, but it's harder to switch colors because of the way you have to dismantle the pen to clean it
ok. one thing to note is that these pens will either come with one (1) cartridge or no ink at all. so. what ink do you use?
WELL! one thing that is important to stress is to not use india ink. it will clog and destroy a fountain pen. make sure you only use inks that are clearly labeled for fountain pen use - any other ink may damage your pen.
in any case, i really like waterman intense black for a nice black ink that's easy to use and clean out of pens.
don't use any piddly shit they sell at michael's, it sucks (know from experience)
for any other colors, some brands i can fully endorse are diamine (cheap AND very very reliable!!) and pilot iroshizuku (more expensive, but the ink writes wet [more ink flow] and is vibrant).
brands i would warn against for ink are... NOODLER'S. the owner of noodler's ink is a rabid trump supporter and conspiracy theorist, and with ink names like "1984" and "censor red", i'm surprised more people don't know/care. another is ferris wheel press just because their shit is overpriced and underperforming compared to most other brands. if any ink is more that $40 it's basically a scam
also, shimmer inks are NOT for newbies; they are prone to clogging pens and ruining them. no glitter for new people you will regret it
UHHH OKAY THATS ALL MY BEGINNER ADVICE. SORRY ITS SO MUCH. GOOD LUCK OUT THERE SOLDIER

Community Engagement: The Key to Successful Water Conservation by NGOs in India
Although it is one of the most important resources for life on Earth, water is also among the ones under greatest danger. With a growing population and an economy mostly reliant on agriculture, India presents great demand on water supplies. The requirement of efficient water conservation techniques has never been more important as conventional water sources dry up and climate change aggravates the situation. Here is where non-governmental organisations (NGOs) help to save water using creative and sustainable means. Their success depends on community involvement in great part.
NGOs working for water conservation in India recognise that local communities' active involvement is very necessary for sustainable water management to be attained. These groups understand that more robust and long-lasting solutions result from enabling communities to own water resources. NGOs guarantee that the solutions are not only technically good but also culturally and socially acceptable by including communities at every stage of the water saving process.
The Importance of Community Engagement
Successful water conservation initiatives depend critically on community involvement, not just a term. Results are much more sustainable when communities participate actively in the design, construction, and upkeep of water projects. This is so because local people are more likely to value and comprehend the resources they have worked to preserve and oversee.
For instance, NGOs working for water conservation in India usually start their initiatives by means of thorough community discussions. These consultations assist in determining the particular water-related concerns the community has as well as in creating customised strategies to solve these ones. NGOs can guarantee that the solutions are suitable and efficient by include people of the community in the decision-making process.
Case Studies of Successful Community Engagement
Many Indian NGOs have shown how effectively community involvement may help to reach water-saving targets. One such group is the innovative non-governmental organisation Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR), which since 1993 has been working in the area of watershed development and climate-resilient agriculture. WOTR's strategy is evidence of how well local communities should be included into water-saving initiatives.
WOTR works on the idea that social transformation is as important for watershed development as technical interventions are. Working together with local communities, the company helps them to develop their capacity thereby enabling them to sustainably manage their water supplies. By means of awareness campaigns and training courses, WOTR teaches people of the community on the value of water conservation as well as the strategies to attain it.
Among WOTR's noteworthy initiatives is one in Maharashtra's hamlet of Darewadi. Particularly during the dry season, Darewadi had extreme water shortage until WOTR intervened. Under a comprehensive watershed development program including the building of check dams, contour trenches, and other soil and water conservation structures, WOTR included the nearby population. From design to completion to monitoring, the community participated in every aspect of the project. Consequently, the hamlet now boasts greater water supply all year long, which has raised agricultural output and improved lifestyles.
Under the direction of Rajendra Singh, also known as the "Waterman of India," the NGO Tarun Bharat Sangh (TBS) also provides another example. In the Alwar area of Rajasthan, TBS has been crucial in bringing back conventional water collecting methods. TBS has helped to replenish rivers that had dried up by involving nearby communities in the building of new johads (traditional water storage tanks) and the repair of existing ones. This helps to reenergise groundwater. The active involvement and ownership of the local people, who today run these water systems themselves, help to explain TBS's success.
Strategies for Effective Community Engagement
The success stories of NGOs working for water conservation in India highlight several key strategies for effective community engagement:
Participatory Planning: Including community participants in the planning process guarantees that the interventions fit their circumstances and need. Information may be gathered and a common knowledge of the problems and remedies developed using participatory rural assessment (PRA) instruments.
Capacity Building:聽 Training and teaching community members about water saving strategies and the need of sustainable water management is very vital. This might call for field demonstrations, seminars, and exposure trips to completed initiatives.
Establishing Local Institutions: Local water user organisations or committees assist to institutionalise community involvement. These organisations may ensure the long-term viability of the water conservation systems by assuming management and upkeep of them.
Empowerment and Ownership: Greater dedication and accountability follow from empowering communities to take ownership of water resources and conservation initiatives. Involving them in decision-making procedures and providing them authority over the administration of water projects helps one to accomplish this.
Monitoring and Evaluation: Regular monitoring and evaluation of water conservation programs under active community engagement guarantees that the interventions are successful and facilitates required changes.
The Role of Technology and Innovation
While traditional knowledge and practices are invaluable, the integration of modern technology and innovation can enhance the effectiveness of water conservation efforts. NGOs working for water conservation in India are increasingly adopting technology to complement community engagement strategies.
For example, WOTR has been mapping watersheds and more precisely planning treatments using Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. WOTR can find important intervention sites and create more effective water conservation plans by aggregating local knowledge with GIS data. Furthermore enabling real-time tracking of project progress and results is the usage of mobile apps for data collecting and monitoring.
Challenges and the Way Forward
Despite the successes, NGOs working for water conservation in India face several challenges. Maintaining constant community involvement may be challenging, particularly in places with significant migration or where conflicting needs on resources and time call for attention. Furthermore seriously hampered attempts at water conservation are the effects of climate change, including the frequency and severity of droughs.
NGOs must constantly change and develop if they are to meet these difficulties. Establishing strong alliances with academic institutions, government agencies, and the business sector can help to provide extra resources and knowledge Furthermore, encouraging NGOs to share knowledge and ideas would assist to spread effective policies and best practices.
Conclusion
Successful water conservation by NGOs in India depends clearly on community involvement. Including local people in all facets of water management鈥攆rom planning to execution to maintenance鈥攁llows NGOs to guarantee that their initiatives are sustainable and successful. Organisations such as WOTR and Tarun Bharat Sangh have shown how effectively community-driven strategies may be used to significantly improve water supply and quality.
As India continues to grapple with water scarcity and the impacts of climate change, the role of NGOs working for water conservation in India will become increasingly important. These companies may lead the way in creating a water-secure future for the nation by giving community involvement top priority and using both conventional knowledge and current technologies. The work of NGOs such as WOTR is a brilliant illustration of how enabling local people may result in radical improvement in water management and conservation.

Rajendra Singh.
Rajendra Singh (born 6 August 1959) is an Indian water conservationist and environmentalist from Alwar district, Rajasthan in India. An important event in his life came in 1974, when he was still in high school, Ramesh Sharma, a member of Gandhi Peace Foundation visited their family home in Meerut, this opened up young Rajendra's mind, to issues of village improvement, as Sharma went about cleaning the village, opened a vachnalaya (library) and even got involved in settling local conflicts; soon he involved Rajendra in an alcoholism eradication program.
Also known as "waterman of India", he won the Magsaysay Award in 2001 and Stockholm Water Prize in 2015. He runs an NGO called 'Tarun Bharat Sangh' (TBS), which was founded in 1975. The NGO based in village hori-Bhikampura in Thanagazi tehsil, near Sariska Tiger Reserve, has been instrumental in fighting the slow bureaucracy, mining lobby and has helped villagers take charge of water management in their semi-arid area as it lies close to Thar Desert, through the use of johad, rainwater storage tanks, check dams and other time-tested as well as path-breaking techniques.
He is an important figure for water conservation not only within his country, India, but throughout the world, demonstrating what human beings are capable of when they want something.
