what happens when spider-man meets and falls in love with a siren đ§đœââïž
miguel had always been captivated by you, drawn to your ethereal beauty and enchanting voice. but it was your siren nature that truly intrigued him â the magic and mystery that surrounded your every movement and melody. he couldn't suppress his growing feelings any longer and felt a burning desire to express his love.
one evening, miguel gathered his courage and decided it was time to confess his feelings to you. he found you sitting by the waterfront, your voice carrying across the waves as you sang a haunting melody. as your last note echoed through the air, miguel approached, his heart racing.
with a nervous breath, miguel spoke, his voice filled with sincerity. "i may not know you personally but, there's something i need to tell you. i have fallen deeply in love with you. your siren nature, your beauty, and your voice... they've enraptured my heart." he paused, searching for the right words. "i want you to know that i am willing to adjust my life to accommodate your unique siren lifestyle. i want to be with you, to support you, and to create a life where we can both thrive."
your eyes shimmering with emotion, listened intently to miguelâs declaration. you had guarded your heart for so long, fearing rejection due to your siren existence. but in miguel, you saw a kindred spirit, someone who embraced your uniqueness and offered genuine love and understanding.
a smile bloomed on your face as you responded, your voice as melodious as the waves crashing against the shore. "miguel, your words fill my heart with joy. i have yearned for someone who would accept me for who i am, sirensong and all. to know that you are willing to journey alongside me is a gift beyond measure."
with your hearts now laid bare, miguel and your embarked on a new chapter of your lives together. miguel cupped your face and sealed a kiss that would be a testimony of the beginning of your relationship and for many years to come. both of you worked together to create a home that would accommodate your siren needs. miguel studied the lore and legends surrounding sirens, seeking knowledge and finding ways to blend the human and siren worlds.
your home became a sanctuary, a place where your enchanting voice could echo freely and where miguel found solace in your song. he embraced the shifting tides of your lives, determined to navigate the challenges and celebrate the magic you shared.
you charted a course of love and discovery, with miguel supporting your siren lifestyle every step of the way. on moonlit nights, you would stroll along the beach, hand in hand, sharing tender moments as your voice harmonized with the crashing waves.
as you embraced your intertwined destinies, miguel and you found solace and a profound sense of belonging in each other's arms.in your loving union, you discovered a harmony that transcended the bounds of reality, a love story guided by the song of your hearts, forever entwined by your shared passion and desire to explore the depths of your connection.
in your siren song, you wove a melody that would resonate throughout your lives, an eternal reminder of your love and the promise he had made to accommodate and embrace all aspects of your unique union.

NSB (Straud Legacy) Gen 9 Ep. 105: Moving On and Moving In
With Luigiâs post college career on track, it was time for him to focus on fulfilling his lifelong desire to establish his own homestead in sunny Sulani.
Heâd always imagined living right on the water, but none of the available waterfront properties would accommodate a stable. He refused to abandon his promise that Noemi could adopt a horse, so the couple searched further inland for their own personal slice of paradise.
Scouring openings on all the islands, they finally decided on a modest sized ranch on Lani St. Taz. It was quite close to the beach, and the large side yard called out for a sturdy stable. After walking through the lot a couple times, they decided it was perfect.
With the island ranch now officially their home, it was time to furnish it with everything their little family needed to live comfortably.
Luigi had never worried about simoleons and spared no expense purchasing the best furniture and appliances. In the end they spent almost every penny of his savings as well as the surprisingly large nest egg Noemi and Kiana had set aside by living modestly.
Being two professionals soon to start lucrative careers, Luigi was sure theyâd be making more than enough to replenish their bank account quickly.
The final step, of course, was getting all that furniture moved in and setup (not to mention paint and wallpaper!). The house theyâd bought had been âmove in readyâ with a neutral and thoroughly boring beige interior pallet, and according to Luigi that âsimply wouldnât doâ.
Noemi was glad theyâd taken Dr. Valasquezâs advice to put out a call for help getting them settled. After all the house hunting, she was in absolutely no condition to do much more than lounge around and try to recover from hauling their nearly full-term baby around with them.
Luigi dropped his favorite girl off at the homestead to keep his self proclaimed âlazyâ father company while he and a large group of younger family and friends spent the day setting their new home up just right.
While unpacking Luigi had time to catch up on the others lives.
Bonnie sent her husband Leroyâs regrets. He was up against a big deadline in his new job as a freelance writer, but they were doing well. Sheâd even brought some of the first vegetables harvested from the seeds Luigi had given her at Winterfest as a housewarming gift!
Scott reported that he and Bria had started talking about trying for a baby. His sister practically had her own basketball team, and he figured it was time for him to maybe have at least one of his own! Luigi wished the couple luck while silently shaking his head in disbelief that heâd ended up being one of the first in his friend group to have a child when heâd been so unsure of when heâd even feel ready to get started trying!
Most of his friends may have been doing well, but as soon as theyâd arrived Luigi had sensed the tension between Hunter and Tess, whoâd just given up their quest for a baby themselves after a string of devastating miscarriages. Heâd contemplated not inviting them to help with the move to spare them having to help unpack so much infant gear, but he couldnât bear the thought that they might feel unwelcome or abandoned.
Hunter was quiet and withdrawn, barely responding to Luigiâs gentle questions. Tess shed more light on their situation, taking advantage of a moment alone with him to confide her fears for her husbandâs mental health and the difficulties she was having getting him to communicate with her.
The loss of their babies had taken a heavy toll on their relationship. Luigi told his friend how sorry he was and reminded her he was there for them if he could help in any way. He loved them both and hoped they could bounce back from their troubles without losing each other too.
At the end of the long day Peachy and Noemi arrived with a couple big bags of groceries. Taking her hand Luigi excitedly showed his girl from room to room, basking in the glow of her happy smile.
According to Noemi sheâd had her fill of muted tones living with Kianaâs plain tastes in dĂ©cor, preferring the bold colors and bright patterns that filled their new home. At the end of the tour, she told Luigi that her absolute favorite room was the nursery. A serene blue paradise, she just knew that the little person sleeping peacefully inside her was going to absolutely love it there someday soon.
Gathering everyone in the living room the couple offered their wholehearted thanks and invited them to stick around. It was time to party!

For my beloved Nettlebane and Gale!
What happens if one of them gets sick?
Describe their first date.
Do they have many heated arguments? How do they smooth things over?
Choose one song that perfectly describes their relationship.
What reminds each of their partner?
Do they have any hobbies they share?
What are there thoughts on pet names? Do they have any?
Who's more likely to do something out of spite?
BONUS: Are they looking for a partner? Asking for a friend... đ
Ooh! Thank you for the ask!
What happens if one of them gets sick? -
Gale particularly strikes me as the sort that might be a little dramatic about getting sick. He'd try to push Nettie off even though she's 1) a cleric and 2) very obviously aware that he's sick. Luckily for Nettlebane, Tara is a very useful ally to have in the battle of Making the Wizard Get Bedrest, so she can easily call in a ringer and have Tara sit on his chest until she's done whipping up some medicine or soup for him to eat. Secretly, he very much loves being doted on but publicly he'll gripe about it for about a day. The only thing she can't win on is letting him bring a book to bed so he'll often sit up reading while he's recovering and she'll let him have that. Otherwise, she keeps his work locked up and way out of reach until he fully recovers.
Nettlebane doesn't get sick often but when she does, Gale has to pull out every trick in the book to convince her to stay in bed. He's a decent cook so he can very much make her get some rest. Nettie usually is the "caretaker" and the person that looks after everyone's wellbeing but regarding her own, she can be a bit neglectful. Trying to convince her to stay down takes getting on her level and understanding that her brain is pushing her in a way her body can't accommodate and Gale does have to coax her to bed however he can. Usually, his soups put her right out and, prior to her teaching him how to make her medicine, he and Tara would take a walk to a healer and stockpile some medicine while she sleeps. When he gets back, he'll have the piano strum a soft lullaby and he'll get back to his work. He knows she's woken up when he starts hearing a voice humming alongside the piano and he'll give her the medicine then.
Describe their first date.
Canonically, their first date was him showing her the inside of his tower in game. But headcanon, he does get a chance to do things properly so he pays for her travels to Waterdeep and starts first with taking her around the city. He wanted their first official date together to be just about the two of them. I'm imagining him taking her along the waterfront and laying out dinner on a boat with only them on it. Beneath the stars and with the shimmering lights of Waterdeep in the back, he'd ask her about all her old friends and get to know the Bells even more through her stories. He'd tell her exactly who he was before they met and they'd take the time to really get to know each other the way they couldn't with the Absolute Crisis hanging over them.
He'd hear about her being a young girl given away to a temple and who found refuge in Alris, Caress, and Sharess. She'd learn about the boy who's first love was magic, not the goddess who controls it.
After dinner and docking back, he'd take her on a walk through one of the more scenic parks in the city. Through the neighborhood he grew up in. Through the places most people don't know about in Waterdeep that he frequents.
He'd end the date back at his tower and he'd ask her then show her everything in his tower that he showed her in their date in the Weave. Nettie would touch absolutely everything in the room and ask a million questions about a lot of it. He'd answer all of them with a smile on his face. When they get to the balcony, she'd stare out into the harbor and up at the brilliant stars dotting the sky. They'd share that moment of silence together and they'd fall into a conversation about all they have been through together, what the future they want with each other is.
They'd have each other on the floor of his balcony beneath the stars. His knees will be screaming in the morning.
Do they have many heated arguments? How do they smooth things over?
I don't think so but there were definitely moments in their relationship where clashes happened. Leading up to him learning how to forge the Crown of Karsus, he would have posited the question about attaining and controlling that power, something she would have not agreed with. I think the crux of their arguments stem from Gale's knowing--he is ambitious and, as someone who has worked at his craft, when he is certain that he has an answer he is assertive about it. I think his arrogance can color how he shapes his perspective, but Nettlebane would have heard the sincerity in his pleas and what he gets back in turn teaches him about her.
When she is assured of her perspective, she approaches with warmth and stands stone solid. She does not yell although her voice will raise a bit. She does not get mean or biting. She is gentle but she will not be moved. Her sincerity and way with words slap him down, but with a calm that cuts to the heart of the issue, so much that it startles him sometimes. Nettie's opinion matters a great deal to Gale too, so when she speaks, he makes a big effort to listen.
I think they both know where they stand at the heart of things and it's that understanding that keeps their disagreements from blowing up into something more. They'd pick at each other post-game because she can sometimes be a bit overbearing and he's still...Gale. But arguments that happen between them would probably be pretty rare.
Choose one song that perfectly describes their relationship.
Litost by X Ambassadors
What reminds each of their partner?
Gale sees Nettie in a lot of little things--a very interesting little bauble, the jovial laughter of a group of people stumbling out of a festhall, and the warmth of the sun on his face. He'd think of her face lighting up at the tiny bauble and her cooing over it. He'd think of the way she'd shimmy over to the partygoers stirring up a raunchy ballad that they'd steadily join along in as they scoop her right back inside. He'd see her standing in the soft rays of an evening sun, the sky alight with pink and gold and orange, and he could hear her voice, "and so we are gifted the thread of Sharess, the golden hour of evening caresses our desires and floods our beings with Her warmth."
Nettie feels Gale in much of what she does with her magic. I think once he gets a chance, there's definitely some lessons here and there to help her hone her casting abilities. It's the phantom sensation of his hands laid over hers, moving long fingers in the motions it takes to cast and hers bending to his will. She feels his smile at the back of her head as she's thumbing through books and wanders over to the more interesting selections--a book on the art of romantic etiquette within far off societies and another on types of wine served during a dinner party denoting societal status.
Do they have any hobbies they share?
They are both very big on cooking and often times will be in the kitchen, whipping up a grand meal for two people (and a tressym!).
What are their thoughts on pet names? Do they have any?
They both would love them a lot. Gale defaults to "my love" usually but Nettlebane will call him anything ranging between "honey" and "Professor Dekarios." If she calls him "Gale," he's in trouble.
Who's more likely to do something out of spite?
Gale. Nettie can be mischievous but she's not very spiteful unless it involves her friends.
Gale, however, is an arrogant former level 20 wizard who now teaches children for a living. He has to have a little vinegar in him to deal with some of the people he works with daily.
Bonus: Are they looking for a partner? Asking for a friend...đ
Now Raz, you know Gale doesn't like sharing lololol
Nettlebane would absolutely go for it if he was okay with it but since he's got that hard boundary set, she wouldn't cross it.

And my snippets! From Midnight Madness, under the cut:
1
âAimoupon,â she shouted, to which her tutor let out a gasp.
âPrincess!â he chided. âLanguage!!â
She pushed the blanket off herself and sat up, crossing her legs and looking down. âDonât fret at me Qwkas. Itâs just a word.â
He frowned, rubbing at one of his ears as it quivered. âAnd where did you happen to hear this, âjust a wordâ?â
She flitted her wings as she waved a dismissive hand. âJustâŠaround.â
He raised an eyebrow. âWould it happen to be down by the waterfront?â
Her wings flitted again.
âConversing with the workers?â
Her ear twitched and she flicked it.
âWhere youâre not supposed to be?â
2
âThey are trying, Qwkas. You must see that.â
He considered. âThey are. But I doubt they will ever get there if they cannot figure out how to grow Qawn for themselves. It is not something to learn so much as it is something to feel.â
3
He took a breath. âAnd here,â he said, pointing to a cluster on the opposite side of the market, closer to the stem but still away, âis the Moh, the place of stories and myth.â
âTheâŠâ she paused. âThe what?â
âIt is said that the land of Gesh is ripe with legends, myths, and tales. The speakers of such fables gather here,â he said, tapping it again. âYouâll find stories on every subject, from the way they think the Great Tree was created to the end days, from the legend of some chosen king against evil to the stories as to why the stars fall during certain cycles.â
She stared at where his finger was before looking back up at him. âQwakasâŠdo you know the legends?â
He smiled a little, small and mostly to himself. He sat next to her and hmmed a little to himself. âWell. I might have heard one or two in my time. I wasnât always a Qwakas, you know. I spent my time in the world, as we all must do. Now letâs seeâŠâ He tapped a finger to his chin in thought. âThe easiest one to remember is the story of the king and the supposed evil that he fights.â
4
Qwakas patted her on the shoulder.
âI knowâŠthis is likely not what you want, princess,â he said softly, âbut try to trust me when I tell you things are done this way for a reason. You will see. It will be good.â
She fixed him with a wide, brimming smile. âOf course it will be, Qwakas. Iâm sure this will be the best mikoksno adventure ever.â
He immediately groaned and rubbed at his eyes as her grin grew wider. âPrincess,â he chided tiredly, â...language. Please.â
5
She puffed out a cheek as she stared over the railing, hand on her chin. âI donât see that it matters much if I like my accommodations,â she answered primly. âSeeing as how it didnât much matter if I liked this tradition of being sent away in the first place.â
She couldnât see her Qwakas, but she was fairly sure he was rolling his eyes. He let out a sigh and sat next to her. Took her hand gently.
âPrincess. You know that itâsââ
âFor the good,â she recited. âFor the benefit of both my family, my kingdom, and myself. Itâs tradition for a reason, we perform these actions because we must, blah bla-blah blah.â She pulled her hand free and joined it with the other, propping her chin in it. âItâs isiupon,â she spat. âPure and mighty isiupon.â
She expected a groan or a sigh. A reprimand.
Instead her outburst was met with gloomy silence.
6
âIf youâre really under my service and mine alone, why continue to try and teach me the kingdomâs cultures?â she asked. âShouldnât you be asking me what I want you to do?â
âI am at your service,â he sniffed, ânot made into your puppet. And Qwakas or not, I still believe in preparedness. The second kingdom is rich in many ways our kingdom is not, and I donât want you to be challenged by the culture you are going into.â He let out a small sigh. âAlthough I doubt you could be shocked by much of anything, princess.â
âYou can use my name,â she said with a smile.
âUmâŠâ
The smile turned into a grin. âUse it.â
He let out a small sigh and shook his head. âPrincess Lyra.â
7
âKasnauo,â he finally said. âMy name is Kasnauo.â
She grinned even harder. âMay I call you Kasnauo?â
âSeeing as how you are going to whether I want you to or not, I might as well say yes.â
She mocked a hurt appearance. âWhy Kasnauo, I would never. It would be impolite and improper of a high-born such as I to not acknowledge or give notice to your preferences.â
He took one of those deep, long-suffering inhales he saved for the days when she was intentionally pushing his buttons and let it out in a small burst of an exhale.
Her smile softened and she let off a little giggle. âI am sorry, Qwakas. I truly am. Continue your lessons and I will listen.â She folded her hands in her lap and let her wings flutter to her side, ears forward with her attention fully on him.

Fiat 600 Jungla
The Jungla, Italian for âJungle,â was designed at the request of Fiat supremo Gianni Agnelli who wanted a vehicle to compete with the popular Mini Moke, and perhaps to win the company some military contracts. Just 3,200 or so were made between 1965 and 1974. Emphasizing simplicity as a design criterion, the Fiat Jungla boasted a utilitarian, squared-off metal body, providing space for four adults and up to 40 kilograms of luggage, cargo, or beach equipment. Leveraging the mass production of the Fiat 600, a popular and affordable car in Italy at the time, the Jungla was based on the same platform to ensure cost-effective, efficient production and broad parts availability.
Powering the vehicle was a 767cc inline-four cylinder, overhead valve engine borrowed from the Fiat 600, with power transmitted through a 4-speed manual gearbox to the rear wheels. Despite its modest output of 32 bhp, the low curb weight of 578 kilograms allowed for a respectable top speed of 95 km/h, depending on the load. Though of course, it woulds take a driver with significant courage to actually achieve that speed on Italyâs twisting coastal roads.
While initially intended for military use, the Jungla only saw very limited adoption by the Italian armed forces. That said, it found favor with the Italian Forestry Service and the Carabinieri who ordered some for specialist roles.
Interestingly, the Savio Jungla became particularly popular among affluent vacationers in France, Italy, and Monte Carlo. With their open-top configuration, these four-seaters offered a simple means of transportation for short trips from their hillside manor houses to the waterfront. Notably, the Kelly 600 variant of the Fiat Jungla gained significant recognition. This special edition featured a tasseled folding fabric roof, woven rattan seats, and other rattan accents. Produced by a Fiat dealership based in Monaco, original examples of the Kelly 600 have become highly sought-after and valuable collectorâs items.
To shield occupants from the sun, many of these cars were fitted with simple canvas tops as mentioned above, while rattan seats were often preferred for their ability to accommodate individuals who were still damp from swimming in the sea.
Similar to the Savio Jungla, the Mini Moke and the French sibling, the Citroën Méhari, were also commonly seen at waterfront establishments during that era. The Méhari bore a striking resemblance to the Jungla, leading many to speculate that it drew direct inspiration from the Italian vehicle, appearing on the market just three years later.

Things to unpack here, and I haven't had the joy that is scene analysis for a while now.
In the injury scene I think Porsche is best described as wary. He thought he had figured out the rules here, but Kinn has found a new way to be weird. Porsche is trying to behave more like the professional employee he signed on to be, but that role doesn't provide him with any guidance. He does not have the inside line on what Kinn is thinking that the audience does, and has no choice but to take the "just taking care of my property" pose at face value. His body language is avoidant for lack of anything else he can do to signal discomfort with this interaction, and when Kinn starts to leave, Porsche is thinking about work.
At the waterfront, contrast. Porsche is (at least physically) completely unguarded. The camera pans over everyone else still inside; an empty space suggests they had previously been sitting next to each other, that this is a continuation of whatever that interaction was. Porsche is relaxed to the point of appearing giddy, presumably a little drunk, sprawls on the pier like he has never worried about anything in his life. Kinn visibly hesitates and has to be coaxed into relaxing. I am very taken with the decision to include the tiny, casual point of physical contact. This is the first interaction between them that isn't fraught with outright conflict or obvious status problems, and their physical positioning throughout the scene reflects that.
Mirroring is something humans do in conversation, and it can be so interesting when it's used in visual storytelling, because we tend to pick up on it even if we don't pay it conscious attention. It's the alternation of who moves and who mirrors that provides a sense of connection.
It's Porsche who asks what are you thinking, probably not something he would have asked at the house, and gets a playful deflection and then a serious question back -- which he also deflects. Seconds ago is not a real answer; he is not as unguarded as he looks right now.
Conversational mirror, Kinn turning the what are you thinking question back on him. Porsche has his eyes closed, so Kinn doesn't have to control his own expressions; we see how intent he is. Porsche doesn't deflect this time, doesn't shift back to silly mode, just... goes for broke here with honesty, not even opening his eyes to see how Kinn is taking this, because he doesn't really care? He's mainly talking to himself, might have a bit of alcohol buffer going, facing the consequences of his decisions. Of course he's not actually alone; we get a whole parade of Kinn reactions that mostly seem to land on the rueful spectrum.
We already had Pete's "eh, you get used to it" in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. It could make sense for Kinn to echo that sentiment; far as he's concerned, this is normal. Instead, he ties his response to Porsche's feelings; he's way more cautious than Porsche right now, but he takes the risk and goes for that connection. The instant Porsche looks at him, he looks away and shuts up, so Porsche closes his eyes again to ask his follow-up question. I find that an interesting moment, that Kinn won't talk if Porsche is watching him, and that Porsche picks up on that and accommodates for the entire rest of the scene rather than shutting down the conversation.
Not that Kinn says a lot in terms of the number of words, but it's a critical line. Do I have a choice? Of course he does. Porsche had a choice at the end of the first episode. That choice had a high price in terms of his identity no matter which option he picked. He decided that his own moral integrity was less important to him than his role in protecting Chay's future, and he's now facing the cost. So we know that Kinn has a choice, and can infer that he prefers the price he is currently paying to whatever the alternatives are; all we have to go on is Pete telling Porsche that without Kinn, the family is doomed.
The dialog makes an odd turn here, with Porsche thanking Kinn for intervening in the Macau thing. I tentatively conclude that he's bringing up a moment where however messed up the situation was, Kinn's choice could make the best of a bad thing. Also makes it clear that despite everything to date, Porsche didnât hate him. And he still has his eyes shut, has run out of things to say. Kinn is so fucking charmed and defenseless.
One quick kiss; pause for Kinn to evaluate his response. Porsche hasn't pulled away, hasn't really reacted at all in that first moment. Reprise; Porsche leans into it a little, they keep going, and he's leaning in a little more as the camera pulls back.
One final unrelated note about this episode: I think the chessboard has been fully populated now? We've met the entire family. We have hints about several directions from which threats might appear -- the minor family, the unseen person who hired the lady assassin, assorted other mobs, and the hint that there's a spy on the inside.

Monday 8th April 2024
After 11 hours 35 mins aloft in one of British Airways finest Airbus 350's we hit the tarmac in Cape Town airport with what I would have said was an alarming thump amidst autumnal leaded skies and evidence of very recent precipitation. 22° the display board said though. Having zigzagged through the ubiquitous endless queue, leading inevitably to a typically bored expressionless immigration officer who, mechanically rubber stamping our passports, seemingly reluctantly allowed us through to a crowded and confusing concourse beyond. With immediate effect we found ourselves people of interest from within the would be taxi driver community eagerly touting for our custom. Following a small diversion to purchase a local SIM card we selected the shuttle taxi option to take us to our accommodation on the Waterfront. Despite the shuttle people carefully copying the address from my booking dot com app, we soon found ourselves being whisked away to a far flung but erroneous destination, nice but not the one we desired. Nonetheless, our driver was very jolly and I think could see the funny side of it by the way he gritted his teeth when I pointed out his error (not before having a thorough tour of Cape Town first). He immediately explained the joke more fully over the phone to his office. No doubt they also had a good chuckle. Well that'll save on a hop on, hop off (HoHo) bus tour tomorrow!
Lovely accommodation forming part of the Radisson hotel complex, so very well appointed and appreciated. UK wind and rain has followed us here though. In the northern hemisphere a southerly wind is generally welcomed as balmy and warm. Here in the southern hemisphere we are reminded the southerly takes on a character of it's own, coming straight from Antarctica! The weather app seems optimistic for an improvement before long. In the meantime a well earned rest is called for I think.
ps Partial recuperation from our journeying experience allowed a short walk from the apartment to the harbour and specifically Tiger's Milk restaurant at the V&A Waterfront where a superb lamb burger was purchased along with a superb local draught pale ale. Then, so it was, that we found a supermarket for mundane shopping including a good local SB for less than ÂŁ3! And even greater delight, a packet of Tim Tams! We also spotted a rubbery chicken for about ÂŁ4. It can't get better than that.
Early night beckons.....

St Ninianâs Manse.
I've not had decent walk around Leith for a while so I remedied that today. My first point of interest is the former church, nestled amongst a cluster of modern buildings at Quayside Street off Sandport Place, while you can see the steeple, which I shal come back to later, easily enough from further afield, you won't find the Manse in full until you are almost on top of it.
The buildings origins lie in a chapel that established in the late 15th century, was the home of North Leith Parish Church, playing a vital role in the development of the area. It's importance is evident as it stands near the head of the first bridge to North Leith over The Water of Leith.
ln 1493 Robert Bellenden, Abbot of Holyrood, founded and endowed a chantry chapel. The chapel fell into ruin after the Reformation, it was restored in 1595, and in 1606 became officially the church of a new and independent parish of North Leith. The Statistical Account of Scotland states both the church and manse are as old as the times of popery, but they have undergone a variety of repairs; including a considerable one in the year 1736, when it was in a great measure rebuilt." In the early 19th century, when a new parish church had been provided on another site, the old one was let to other congregations; and in 1825, when the last of these left, the place was converted into a granary, which in its turn has been rebuilt as a mill, pics of it as a mill in the 1950-60's can be found by clicking here
The most impressive part of The Manse, to me anyway, is the aforementioned spire. If you look at it closely you will see it is made of wood. This is Leith's and so Edinburgh's sole surviving 17th-century timber steeple.
The entrance to the stair, now covered by an extension, is dated 1675 as seen on the lintel above the door. Another interesting feature is the inscription above an archway that says;
BLESED AR THEY YAT HEIR YE VORD OF GOD AND KEIP IT/ LVK XI 1600.
It comes from the New Testament bible by Luke, and quite literally translates to;
âBlessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it!â
The charity Scottish Historic Buildings Trust restored the building from 1996 to 2002 along with the adjacent Quayside Mills, creating desirable waterfront accommodation and office space. Much of the interior, from what I can see having trawled through a fair amount of pictures, retains a certain amount of it's charm, with many of the timbers visible throughout the building.
Some debate has gone on, due to the alterations over the centuries, whether this or Lambs House, a short walk away, on the south of the bridge is the oldest building in Leith.
Leith is usually thought of as the port or dock area of Edinburgh. It was not, however, part of Edinburgh until 1920. Between 1833 and 1920 Leith was an independent burgh. Before this Edinburgh town council was able to control Leith through being the feudal superior of the land there. Many of the citizen s to this day are fiercely proud of their old status, calling themselves Leithers, rather than saying they are from Edinburgh, it is apparent on the poem below I found on the Leith Forever web page, it was written in 1919 and appeared in Andrew Grantâs collection of poems from the Leith Observer 1914 -1920.
Ye folks aâ Leith, are ye aâ sleepinâ
Whilst Reekieâs cheils are busy reapinâ
Braw schemes to hae ye in their keepinâ For
evermair?
Arouse yourselâs anâ dae the sweepinâ
Oâ your ain stair!
If ye yourselâs wad save some siller,
Yeâd better takâ in hand the tiller
Auld Reekie means to âdroon the miller,â Anâ sink
the mill;
For loaded debts noo fairly fill her-
Theyâre âyont her skill.
The debterâs grawvitâs rooned her neck,
Anâ just tae save herselâ frae wreck,
She offer ye her hindmaist cheque,
Frae some dark source.
But in nae bank, giâen bow or beck,
Wad eâer endorse.
Keep clear oâ yon West-eny crew
Oâ their âfine airsâ hae nocht ado,
A keen East windblaws throâ and throâ
Their mim-mooâed graces;
Jist skin it aff, anâ then yeâ view
Some cranks in places!
Takâ heed from Glescaâs swollen size;
Hoo burghs aince pride did prize
Lie low this day, anâ aâ their sighs
Speak oâ taxation.
This lesson ye maun neâer despise
Oâ ruination!
But rouse ye, toonsmen, ane anâ aâ
Anâ gie your pipes a warlike blaw.
Let ilka patriot in a raw
Takâ up his stand;
Auld Reekieâs seekinâ for oor faâ
Anâ wants command.
Ye craftsmen oâ oor ancient toun,
Your heârts I ken are unco sounâ,
Itâs time ilka ane oâus marched rounâ
Oor ain auld border;
Anâ paced oor boundaries up anâ doon
In martial order.
The âhonest tounâ ayont oot by,
(Whaur dangerâs likewise drawinâ nigh)
Has lately bade her burghers hie
To âride the marchesâ;
Let Leith wiâ her auld neebor vie,
âNeath hame-mad arches!
Letâ aâ meet at the Giantâs Brae
Anâ mak the auld Port bricht anâ gay,
Turn oot in sold, massed array,
Makâ Reekie quiver;
On each a badge, anâ let it say-
âAuld Leith for ever!â
Restalrig - 30 August 1919,
Next up I will post pics and history of the more well known, Lambs House.
