The Recycled Ocean Plastic Resort project brief is to design an off-coast floating hotel with sustainability at the forefront of the design criteria. References to land reclamation and renewable energy are of importance.
The reclaimed hotel floats south of the Australian external territory in the Indian Ocean, where an increase in plastic pollution has damaged ecosystems to the Cocos (Keeling) archipelago, trapping and killing hermit crabs amongst the crustaceans that are an important part of tropical environments as they disperse seeds and aerate and fertilize the soil, so their decline could have a significant impact on surrounding ecosystems.
The design has evolved into an ocean-plastic artificial island. Simulation software has been used to understand the movement and migration of large plastic waste in our oceans. This plastic waste has been sailed across oceans by ocean gyres. Margot Krasojević Architects developed an infrastructure that would support and engage with the accumulation of ocean plastic waste.
The ocean current simulation software creates a mapping of the accumulation of the highest density of plastic waste that was used as a starting point to understand how to collect this waste and put it to constructive use, in the production of an artificial island for habitation. As the brief requested a hotel, this was a starting point.
The concept of the hotel itself is to evolve as an ongoing, self-repairing structure that has grown from the carelessly discarded plastics captured through its filters and extending inflated arms that gather and deposit plastics in order for it to be placed in mesh bundles, which act as floatation devices. The idea is inspired by a Dutch team that has been looking into using different scavenged materials to reclaim the land.
The island consists of mesh-filled bags of reclaimed ocean plastics from bottles to tires; this is then weaved together to create a floating landfill. The area is anchored to the ocean floor whilst sand and silt are deposited on the reclaimed plastic floatation devices.
The idea is to make the area hospitable to nurture mangrove trees whose roots grow around the mesh-filled plastic bags, cementing them to create a stable structure. Mangroves have been used as methods of flood defense by capturing or trapping sediment to self-build a type of defense wall as well as acting as flood prevention due to their roots that swell and absorb the water preventing the island from capsizing or sinking.
The island relies on this stage of growth in order for it to become habitable. In this project, they used anchors to locate and position the trash island and created a grid for reclaimed plastic bundles to sit within, after which layers of sediment and sand deposited over the flotilla defined a structural base into which mangroves were introduced. References to Danish land reclamation and plastic waste from 2010 are of the essence to understand or clarify the necessary approach and potential technologies of transforming plastics into a habitable landfill.
A major design element is a pleated structure of interlaced webbing, made from biodegradable-seeded concrete fiber mesh. These ‘tentacles’ are released from the ceramicrete upon contacting with rising water levels. They expand and inflate into the oncoming swell sinking as they absorb water creating an artificial barrier trapping sediment and absorbing floodwater.
In principle, they are the artificial mangrove roots that are the island’s life jacket in an emergency, as they expand the trapped sediment creating artificially engineered land almost like an inflatable runway. Each fully immersed tentacle expands and falls on top of the next creating a temporary wall preventing water from flooding the island whilst supporting it in case of damage. Once the storm stabilizes, the tentacles are emptied. Using pumps powered by solar panels, the water is redirected off of the island and released into the Indian Ocean. The tentacles expand on impact with water pressure retaining the island’s buoyancy.
This interlocking web is an open-ended structure that captures sediment and allows for natural movement across the island. It acts like nets trapping and creating a framework for the sediment to lodge and grows in depth and density in order to increase the land building sediment for the mangroves and plastic pollution substructure whilst attempting to dampen waves functioning as a breakwater, absorbing energy and protecting the shoreline from further damage.
The hotel offers a compartmentalized series of canopied rooms and land for camping. Showers use filtered and distilled seawater pumped onto the facility using solar energy.
The island grows according to its inhabitants who reach its shore by boat. It is a self-build land hotel that becomes a collective community building for themselves and others. Utopian getaways, correcting the environmental imbalances of plastic pollution in our oceans whilst enjoying the beauty of a self-enriched, self-sustained, autonomous ocean island escape.
Ocean current simulation software identifies patterns of plastic pollution migrating and circulating through ocean current pathways. These clusters of ocean pollutants and their collection and filtering are the main design criteria involved in the location and evolution of the island.

About Margot Krasojević Margot Krasojević completed her architectural education at the Architectural Association School of Architecture and The Bartlett, University College London. She worked with Zaha Hadid Architects and was a lead undergraduate and master’s studio director, investigating digital and sustainable design programs, at UCL, University of Greenwich, UWA, and the University of Washington. She then opened a multidisciplinary architectural design studio focusing on integrating environmental issues, renewable energy, and sustainability as part of the design process.
Ms. Krasojević is currently working on projects in Asia, where she is integrating and harnessing renewable energy as part of a building service infrastructure. She is also designing hydroelectric homes and hotels which redefine the manner in which not only tourism but everyday rituals are affected and is investigating hempcrete as a sustainable and carbon-negative building material in her recent project for Catalonia’s Cannabis agricultural farm design. She is the author of “Dynamics and Derealisation” and “Spatial Pathologies-Floating Realities” and is a visiting professor at the University of Washington.
Ms. Krasojević believes that a cross-disciplinary design strategy is very important for architecture proposing new typologies which reflect our perpetually changing environment. She focuses on design criteria that involve renewable energy sources and technology to develop a formal and structural architectural language supported by dynamic simulation software.
Ms. Krasojević won the 2018 LEAF Award for “Best Future Building – Under Construction and Drawing Board” for her “Self-Excavation Hurricane House” in Louisiana, US.
Ms. Krasojević’s `Hydroelectric House’ design is a permanent exhibit at The Futurium, Berlin, opening 5th September 2019.
The Turbine hotel is part of a television documentary by RAUM Films, Austria.

GREELEY — Juan Jiminez comes to Poudre Ponds for the peace. The fish are a bonus.
Jiminez, 47, of Greeley works the graveyard shift stocking shelves at King Soopers. He loves to unwind after work at the pond, so much so that he rarely changes out of his khakis. The pond, in fact, seemed to be the only respite from the coronavirus, as he adjusted to his own fears, a broken economy and wearing an uncomfortable mask for hours at work.
He had fish on his mind when he drove over to the popular Greeley pond on a recent Sunday morning as a fresh sun crept into the sky. Jiminez had just returned from his honeymoon, where fishing was discouraged, so he was eager to cast a line, and he read on Facebook that Colorado Parks and Wildlife had declared an emergency fish salvage. 
Salvages are rare, as it means the state is essentially pulling the plug on the fishing spot, but there have been three this summer in northern Colorado, and two of them are because of the punishing drought that’s haunted the state all summer.

The salvage declaration at Poudre Ponds banishes bag limits, meaning anglers can take home as many fish as they want. Jiminez enjoys eating fish from Poudre Ponds, but he also donates some of the bass, bluegill, catfish and trout he catches to others who could use a meal.
When he pulled up that Sunday morning, he found anglers circling the pond, socially distanced but as crowded as he’d ever seen it. The fishing trip was not as successful as he would have liked. Monday morning wasn’t much better, either, when the only thing he caught was some algae. 
“That’s OK,” Jiminez said that Monday. “I’ve had an awesome time fishing out here. I’ve really enjoyed the outdoors lately, especially with everything going on.”
Salvages are rare treats for anglers since they can catch and keep as many fish as they’d like. But they come at a stiff price: When fishing holes are opened to no-limit catches, it means they’ll soon be taken out of commission. This year, anglers have lost more of their favorite spots than in at least a decade.
Most of the reservoirs at popular areas, such as state parks or regional open spaces, are owned by irrigation and ditch companies. In lean water years, like this one, when the only significant moisture of the summer came in a crazy September snow, growers drain reservoirs dry for irrigation.

Greeley merely ran into bad luck, needing to drain Poudre Ponds to make unexpected repairs to a broken intake pump. The city plans to drain the pond all the way down to the dirt. 
But other popular spots, such as Barr Lake State Park in Brighton and Jumbo Reservoir in Julesburg, hosted public fish salvages because of an algae bloom or irrigation demands, and at least one other lake, Jackson Lake State Park, east of Greeley, had to close its boating ramp just a week ago, far earlier than normal, because of low water levels.
The goal of a salvage is to use the fish in the pond, and with that in mind, Colorado Parks and Wildlife sometimes shocks fish to knock them out and move them to other fishing spots, said Jason Clay, spokesman for CPW’s northeast region. This typically happens when conditions get unsafe for anglers. 
“They won’t want people getting stuck in the mud,” Clay said, “so we will take what we can when that happens. We want as little waste as possible.”
Biologists did this at Jumbo Reservoir State Wildlife Area, near Julesburg, and this week at Poudre Ponds. Justin Scharton, Greeley’s natural areas and trails division superintendent, said while water is being pulled from the ponds at an accelerated rate, there should be fishing until around Oct. 1. 
A double-edged sword
Most anglers understand the need for bag limits. Greedy anglers who hog all the fish aren’t good for the lake. But they can be frustrating at times. 
“There are days you get out there and the fish are just banging, and the limit is just four,” said JR Pierce, an angler who can see Barr Lake from his home in Brighton. “So, heck yeah, salvages can be a fun way to fill the freezer.”
Pierce, however, was mourning the idea of seeing his favorite fishing spot run nearly dry on Sept. 4, the day the fish salvage there began. He’s fished the reservoir for 30 years, since he was a kid, and called it his steady spot for the last decade. He also hosts a fishing tournament out at the lake. 
“The fishery has really blossomed,” Pierce said. “I caught some of the biggest fish I’ve ever caught out there. So it’s horrible. I hate it. It hurts.”
But Pierce is also a water shareholder, and he uses the water for his hayfield. He’s also good friends with the people draining the lake.
“It’s a double-edged sword for me,” Pierce said. “Unfortunately you can’t have it all.”
A nasty blue-green algae bloom helped contribute to the emergency fish salvage, said Michelle Seubert, manager of Barr Lake State Park. Algae blooms were common until 2013, when the water quality improved, which Seubert attributes to more public awareness about preventing nitrates from seeping into the water. 
Dog owners began picking up after their pets more, for instance. But the water’s nitrate levels came back up this year, probably because there wasn’t any rain to help dilute the supply and keep water levels normal.

Low water levels also usually mean higher temperatures in the water, which increases the chances of more algae blooming. As the water level dropped to about one-fifth of its normal level, the algae died off, robbing the water of its dissolved oxygen, leaving the fish gasping for breath. 
“It’s a perfect storm this year,” Seubert said. 
Anglers seem to understand why the salvages need to take place as they are stuffing their coolers, though most are as sad as Pierce, and many boaters have expressed some frustration. Low water levels just aren’t much fun anywhere, said Tyler Seward, the park manager at Jackson Lake State Park.
Water levels haven’t been this low since 2013. 
“The fishery was awesome this year,” Seward said. “It was a good year until the boating stopped.”
As Pierce said, Barr Lake’s fishery blossomed in the last few years, and that’s only helped the park’s recent designation as a bird oasis. Visitors crowd the park in the colder months to view the wintering bald eagles, as well as a nesting pair, and even with its terrific fishing, the park is probably more known for birding than any place in northern Colorado. 
Through July, the total visitation was nearly 185,000, or 45,000 more than in all of 2016.
Seubert has fielded many calls about the bald eagle population, which the park has encouraged in past years with its eagle festival and Eagle Express ride that takes visitors around to see the big birds that sometimes snatch fish from the water. Seubert, however, isn’t worried about whether the eagles will visit this year: There will still be a bit of water in the lake. 
She’s also seen almost 200 pelicans stuffing their pouches with fish. “They’re making the anglers look bad,” she said. 
So the fishery, although smaller, is still there. 
“There’s a small pool, but the big fish will eat the little fish and become bigger,” Seubert said. “We will still have fish.”
Rebuilding and rebounding
All three fishing spots were popular, even if they didn’t match Barr Lake’s recent boom. Jumbo grew in popularity in the last eight years, even with residents from Nebraska, because it’s close.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife and the city worked together to develop the Poudre Ponds in Greeley from a reclaimed mining site more than a decade ago. They even let it sit for a couple years so the vegetation and ecosystem had a chance to mature before stocking it with fish that were both good eating and good fun to catch. The pond now acts as an oasis among gravel mining operations and a nice place to take a break from a trip on the Poudre Trail, which winds around it. 
As hard as it is to lose all those fishing holes, Mandi Brandt has seen them disappear to drought many times. She is the northeast region’s fisheries biologist, and part of her job is to restock and restore fishing holes when they dry up. 
Brandt worked out in eastern Colorado for many years, and it seemed like every year a couple popular spots dried up because of the demand for irrigation in the area. 
“We have had to rebuild fisheries in the past after severe droughts,” Brandt said. “We rebuilt the fisheries at both Jumbo and North Sterling Reservoirs following the drought in 2012. It takes time, but it can be done.”
It usually takes two to three years for fisheries to build back to where they once were, but anglers can fish in them as soon as the next year. They just may not be able to keep anything, as bag limits also can put limits on the size of fish anglers can keep. 
But history shows rebuilding usually works: Seubert said Barr Lake had low levels in 2013, and the lake rebounded with a banner year for walleye in 2016.
Most salvages are still going on, although anglers should check the CPW social media for water levels. The state usually closes them for safety before water levels get too low. 
The real issue, of course, comes next year. If it’s a normal year, the lakes have a good chance of rebounding right away, especially with the stocking by the state. But if it’s another dry year, the lakes could make no progress at all.
“A low water level next year means they will have the same issue as this year,” Brandt said. 
Although he’s sad to lose his favorite spot, Jiminez understands that work at Poudre Ponds must be done. He’s already planning to head to Carter Lake, west of Loveland, and other places for fall fishing. His hopes are high for some trophy trout. But even if he doesn’t land one, he’s OK.
“Just being out here is more than anything I can ask for,” Jiminez said.

Your local friendly music shop, on line or through specialist harp suppliers (see below). eBay isn’t recommended in this instance as you just don’t know what you’re gonna get or where it’s been!
Music shops are the obvious first choice, however in my experience very few know much about harmonicas. OK you can actually see the harp you want, but what happens if it’s out of tune (with regular pitch or with itself), has a duff reed or just isn’t fit for purpose. Believe me it happens. If you pay up front and try the harp out before you leave the store (no room for being bashful here), will they exchange it if the harp is out of whack? Or will they tell you either you’re not playing it right, you’ve just broken it, or you need to send it back to the manufacturer… Or best still – at a music store in Brighton specialising in guitars – ‘harps don’t go out of tune.’ REALITY CHECK!
Before buying any harmonica, check out the retailer’s ‘returns’ policy. Standard procedure in a music store used to be: pay for the instrument upfront, play it before you leave the premises and exchange any faulty goods on site. If the harp you’re buying is audibly out of tune or sub-spec, does not octave free of any tremolo effect, is not airtight, does not bend correctly or rattles when played – it should be exchanged for another unit. Retailers used to be happy with this.
Nowadays they can get funny. I spoke to Consumer Direct (South East), but they just rattled off the usual consumer advice: The Sales of Goods Act (1979) states that items purchased ‘must be of satisfactory quality and fit for purpose.’ In the UK, failure of the retailer to fulfill these terms is a breach of contract. They then went on to say items you’ve had for less than a month can be refunded. Items you’ve had for more than a month can be repaired or replaced. Thanks Consumer Direct. Try that with a harmonica. You might just as well be honest and tell me unless I present you with a real case, you have no interest in my dilemma. It gets worse if you travel over the pond…
Heads up if buying inside the USA. They’ll tell you that ‘State Law says’ you can’t blow a harmonica and then return it – on health and safety grounds. You must return any defect merchandise to the manufacturer…at your own cost. Hello. Contract with the retailer? They go deaf on you and start serving another punter. Believe me I’ve tried this in New York and San Francisco. No way will they let you blow that thing to check if it’s fit for purpose… And harps are half the UK price over there… Anyway I’ve flagged it up. If you have any feedback pleased get back to me.
So how do you obviate the apparent ignorance shared by high street retailers or the risk of purchasing a dodgy instrument you need to place between your lips? The short answer is work with people who understand your needs.
Of all the on-line distributors, I recommend Harmonicas Direct. They provide an informed, friendly, fast and personal service. For that little bit of personal extra, I totally recommend West Weston’s customised harps. For £35 plus postage you receive an original spec Marine Band which West will check and calibrate before he sends it out. Any problems and he’s only a call away. His harps have the juiciest sound and you don’t have to pump ’em hard. Great for tongue blocking.

Choosing a harp
There are so many types of harmonica on offer it can be bewildering at first. Without a doubt you need to start with a standard 10 hole diatonic (commonly called a blues style harmonica or short harp). THis is what the majority of players use for blues, rock, country, folk and celtic. The bulk of non-chromatic reference material is built round this type of harp. It’s going to take time to learn any harp at first, so at this stage the brand is not too important. They’ll all present you with the same obstacles as a beginner. Later on you can try different makes and models and begin to establish your favourites. Ultimately it’s down to personal taste. One man’s tin sandwich is another man’s gob iron. Most retailers will stock Lee Oskars or Hohners. These are fine.
Wooden bodied, plastic or alloy?
I play both. Arguably wooden bodies give a warmer tone. Occasionally they need a little breaking in from new. Then again alloy combs ring out. Plastic and alloy are more durable and won’t swell if they get damp. Currently I favour Hohner Marine Bands (wooden body) from West Weston and Hohner Big Rivers (plastic body) from the high street. I’ve used Herring before (plastic) – they were lovely and rich. I also had an alloy valved Suzuki once which sang out beautifully.
Which brand is best?
The main brands are Hohner, Seydel Söhne, Lee Oskar, Herring, Bushman, Huang, Tombo and Suzuki. The oldest and largest of these was the Hohner company until Seydel Söhne was resurrected.
Hohner produce a whole range of diatonic harps, which you wil find in most music stores or through mail order. Their wooden bodied varieties include the famous Marine Band. There is also the Blues Harp. Plastic bodied harps include the Special 20, Pro Harp, Cross Harp and Big River Harp. Hohner recently shifted their manufacturing plant from Germany to China, and quality has suffered somewhat. However they still offer a good full tone and reliability. The Marine Band can be prone to air seepage between the body and the cover plates making the harp harder to play, but go to West Weston and he’ll sort this out for you.
Another common brand of harp is the Lee Oskar made by Tombo in Japan who also produce good diatonics like the Folk/Blues and the Ultimo. Lee Oskars are really popular because they are airtight and ready to play. Their tone is not as full as a Hohner, but they are great performance instruments. You can venture into all types of tuning too and replace reed plates cheaply and easily.
The other makes of harp are perhaps less common although the Huang Silvertone Deluxe and Star Performer are widely available at the lower price end of the market. Don’t be put off by the low price tag; they are in fact very good value for money and make excellent practise harps. I would recommend these for anyone on a budget.
Which key should I start with?
Diatonic harmonicas are tuned to the key stamped on the cover plate or on the end of the comb. This is straight harp or 1st Position. It means if you buy a Harp in the key of C major you’ll be playing in the key of C major. With time and practice you will be able to switch to 2nd position (also known as cross harp or blues harp). C harps played in 2nd position will open up the key of G for you. Then there’s 3rd position – D minor and… Don’t panic. It will soon become clear. You’re just learning a new language!
Which to key start with? Definitely a C. It’s mid-range and most tutorial books use a C harp. Once you into blow bending, you’ll need something a bit lower like and A or Bb. You’ll certainly need A and D if you want to play along with guitarists. Then there’s F at the high end of things…unless you want to try Low F, Low A. But let’s not muddy the waters too much. But a C harp, buy a tutorial book, phone a friend, ask the audience, then come to me for a lesson.

Yes! Anything from Dave Barrett‘s range of books. Sign up for his free bi-monthly newsletter on-line too at HarmonicaMasterclass.com. Also Blues Harp from Scratch by Mick Kinsella is an exellent module for beginners – one or two typos in the tab, but the structure is superb and gets you off into very good habits from the start. Then again you have endless material on-line at You Tube – Jason Ricci and Adam Gussow have been amongst the most prolific and well-regarded contributors. If you have time or can’t sleep, pour yourself a pint, grab a harp and prepare to be dazzled! But beware – they can become addictive! (The lessons on line and the pints that is). And finally Steve Baker. Anything instructional by Steve is worth every penny. His Blues Harmonica Playalongs Vol. 1 is a seminal work – Double Crossed and Blue has to be one of the all time perfect examples of 3rd position harpooning.

Frozen In Time: ’74 Maverick 4-Speed Street Machine
At the ripe, old age of 18, Mike Copeland walked into his local Ford dealership on a mission. His goal was to buy the lightest Ford that came with a V8, and for that model year the Maverick was what fulfilled that criterion. “I bought it new in 1974,” Mike recalls. At that point in time, anything with a V8 was a former shadow of itself when it came to performance. The oil crisis of 1973, stricter government regulations, and rising insurance rates had put the last nail in the coffin of the muscle-car era. That didn’t really bother the die-hard racers, and Mike certainly fell into that category. He explains, “I picked up the Maverick on a Thursday afternoon and drove it home from the dealer and installed wheels and tires on it. I took it to Milan Dragway that Sunday and ran 16.50s.” The Maverick wasn’t his first rodeo when it came to racing. Behind him was a 1970 big-block Torino and a 1973 Mach I Mustang that he regularly drag-raced. He was accustomed to running respectable times, so a 16.50 didn’t set his world on fire. In one swift, warranty-killing move, he pulled the driveline out of the car and installed a four-speed, 9-inch rear with 4.44 gears and a 289 hi-po from a donor 1965 Mustang. Delays in getting engine parts and a set of headers for the 289 forced him to pull it out and drop the stock 302 back in. With the four-speed and a new rear, it ran 15.50s. Once the parts showed up, no time was wasted in putting the 289 back together. It had a big cam and a Paxton supercharger off of a Shelby—a combination that dropped his times down into the 11.70 range. That configuration lasted a few weeks until the engine swallowed a valve at eight grand and was destroyed.
A few grenaded small-blocks later, Mike decided to install a 351 Cleveland with a set of homemade headers. With a four-barrel carburetor and a set of 9-inch slicks, it clocked consistent 13.50 passes. That lasted for about a month until it, too, began to get hopped up. Part of that involved the installation of a set of JR Headers, which meant that some surgery was needed on the shock towers. Mike’s family was extremely supportive of his endeavors—they were all diehard Ford fans—so when some welding was needed, Mike’s dad, Bobby, came to the rescue with a blowtorch and a wire coat hanger and performed the welding duties. Wrenching and racing was a family affair.
At the end of 1975, Mike tied the knot and reality quickly set in when he realized that the monthly car payment was unsustainable. The end result was that it was sent to a new home. He sold it to a close friend who kept it for about 10 years, but never did anything with it. When he sold the Maverick, Mike lost track of it. “I looked for it for a long time, but never found it.” In 2011, while surfing on Craigslist, he spotted an ad for a 1973 Maverick with a 351 Cleveland and a four-speed. There was a small photo with the listing and he was sure that was his car. “I called, but no one answered,” he says. “I called back the next night and his wife told me that the car had been sold. I told her that I was the original owner, and asked if she could have her husband call me. He called the next night and we talked about the car. It sounded almost exactly the same as when I sold it 35 years earlier.” He eventually spoke to the new owner, and after numerous back-and-forth negotiations, an agreement was reached to sell the car back to him. When it returned, it only had 4,900 miles on the odometer and was almost in the same condition as the day he sold it. It was still wearing the original tires that came with it at the rear.
Back home after all those years, it was immediately parked and fully disassembled. It sat for the next five years while he gathered up the parts to rebuild and restore it. Mechanically, much of what came on the car was retained, right down to the 351 Cleveland block, scattershield, and four-speed. His goal was to put it back together like he would have done in 1974 if he had the necessary skills and money at the time. At one point, he came across a Boss 429 that he toyed with the idea of dropping into the Maverick’s engine bay, but it would have meant cutting out the shock towers—they had to stay. They were part of the car’s history, and a direct link to his father. One thing that did change was the removal of the federally mandated front and rear safety bumpers, which were replaced with the thinner units found on the 1970–1972 models.
In December 2015, after months of work on the car, a fresh coat of Grabber Blue was finally laid down with the goal to debut it at the 2016 Detroit Autorama. Mike fondly remembers, “I drove it into Autorama in March. It had been over 35 years since I had driven it. As soon as I shifted to Second gear, I was 18 again.” Those kinds of memories are priceless, even if they are decades in the making.
Tech Notes
Who: Mike Copeland What: 1974 Ford Maverick Where: Brighton, MI
Engine: The foundation for the engine in the Maverick originates with the original 351 that Mike installed back in 1974, but with the rebuild, he decided to up the horsepower by stroking it to 408 ci. On the bottom end, a Scat forged-steel crankshaft was installed along with Scat 6.200 H-beam connecting rods and Scat 12:1 forged pistons. On the top-end, Mike added a set of Trick Flow PowerPort 225 cylinder heads and a solid-roller camshaft.
Induction: Fuel delivery was kept straightforward with a Trick Flow Track Heat intake manifold and a Holley 950-cfm Ultra HP carburetor. An Aeromotive Phantom fuel pump does the feeding.
Electronics: Sparking the engine to life comes from an MSD Pro Billet distributor and an MSD 6AL ignition box with analog circuitry. This is a limited-edition box to mark the company’s 40th anniversary. Each box is individually numbered and limited to only 4,000 units. Fuel: In the mid-1970s, Mike was using aviation fuel that he would buy at the local airport. It was rated at 105 octane. With the restoration of the car, he now uses Sunoco Standard leaded with a 110-octane rating, which is sold at his business.
Transmission: Keepings things as original as possible, the Ford Top Loader close-ratio four-speed is still the same one Mike installed out of the Mustang back in 1974, along with the original scattershield. Over the years, it was refreshed a number of times and, as part of the restoration, it was again given a full rebuild at his shop, Diversified Creations. They installed a Centerforce Dual Friction clutch, but kept it old school with the original vintage Mr. Gasket vertical gate shifter.
Rearend: The rearend was a deviation from the car’s previous life. When he got it back, it still had the 289 Ford hi-po housing in place. Mike knew he was going to be producing more power, so he had Moser build him a new rear for the car. They put together a narrowed Ford 9-inch 35-spline posi rear with 4.10:1 gears.
Chassis/Suspension: The front suspension consists of Moroso front springs and Competition Engineering adjustable shocks. The rear also uses Competition Engineering adjustable shocks and Eaton rear springs. Mike also added frame connectors early on in the Maverick’s life and a set of Lakewood traction bars that were a gift from his mother back in 1974.
Brakes: When Mike purchased the Maverick, it had drum brakes at all four corners. That was the same drum setup that was on it when he got it back 35 years later. With the rebuild, he decided not to live on the edge, so he installed Baer dual-piston calipers with 12-inch rotors at the front and Baer dual-piston calipers with 11-inch rotors at the rear.
Wheels/Tires: The wheels on the Maverick are a throwback to the early 1970s: magnesium Motor Wheels “Flys.” The company got out of the racing business in the mid-1970s, so finding a complete set in decent shape today is quite difficult—and expensive. Mike found the rear set locally on Craigslist within a week of getting the car back. They measure 15×10 inches and have been wrapped in 28×11.50 15LT Mickey Thompson ET Street tires. The front set took him more than three years to locate and were an eBay purchase. They measure 15×3.5 inches and wear Coker Pro-Trac 15×5.60 tires.
Paint/Body: The body was placed on a rotisserie for the restoration. It still retains all of its original sheetmetal, with only minor dents and dings needing to be repaired. The rear fenderwells were rolled to accommodate larger rubber, a Boss 429 hoodscoop was added, and a small-bumper conversion was executed. Kiefer Automotive in Howell, MI, laid down the Grabber Blue PPG paint.
Interior: The interior is mostly stock. Mike spent a fair amount of time tracking down new-old-stock material to recover the 1972 Cougar seats and headliner. CNS Stitch Works in Brighton, MI, did all the upholstery work, while the six-point rollbar and five-point RaceQuip belts were installed at Mike’s shop. An AutoMeter dash-mounted tach and Stewart Warner water temperature and oil pressure gauges round out the interior modifications.

Although the appliances and plumbing fixtures in a residence may be equipped with modern technology, any problems with the water supply must be addressed according to the manufacturer's specifications. In order to conduct this review, the inspectors need to install well-trained pump-out machines. The stipulations of this provision are intended to protect the homeowner from excessive repair costs that might be incurred as a result of water problems.
Home inspectors are also not allowed to determine whether or not a home has a sufficient number of existing air ducts. An air duct is a tube used to transport excess moisture or hot air from one location to another. Air conditioning systems commonly include an air duct and an evaporative cooler. These components are typically found in condominiums and multi-unit dwellings built before the effective date of the 1976 National Fire Protection Act (NFPA).
Inspectors are also not allowed to observe or test appliances or other components without obtaining an authorized inspection plan. In most states, inspectors are also not permitted to test refrigerators or dishwashers unless specific authorization is granted in writing by the homeowner. Appliances and components are typically tested for efficiency, safety, functionality, and operability. New or used appliances are usually inspected as part of the pre-sale depressurization process. This is typically conducted prior to a sale to determine the condition, capacity, and longevity of the appliance. Prior to selling a property, it is typically required that the seller obtain the services of licensed professionals to conduct routine evaluations and inspections on behalf of the seller.
Home inspectors are not allowed to engage in unauthorized work under the guidelines contained in the NPDES permits. As defined in the NCPLH, inspectors are required to operate within the boundaries of a building and must only operate within the facility that they inspect. They are also required to notify the property owner or agent of problems observed during the course of their inspection. Home inspectors are also prohibited from performing invasive inspections of heating systems. Home inspectors are not allowed to enter a secured building to carry out any inspection process unless the security of the property or building itself is compromised. If inspectors are not employed by a licensed dealer, they are not considered a professional entertainer and are not subject to the same contracting laws that real estate brokers are held to under the NCPLH.
