Watch the water meter

If you suspect a leak, monitoring the water meter in your home will give you a clear answer. The meter is often located under a manhole-like cover near the street or (in areas where temperatures don't drop below freezing) on the side or back of the house, near where the water line enters the house. Follow these steps to monitor the meter:

Turn off all faucets in your home and make sure the washing machine and dishwasher are not running.

Check the water meter and make a note of the numbers you see. Come back in an hour and check again.

To determine if the water leak is indoors or outdoors (only for homes with meters on the street), turn off the shut-off valve on your home's main water line. This is either in the basement or in a utility room where the water line enters the house.

Check the water meter, note the numbers, and wait another hour. If the meter readings have not changed, the water leak is in the house. If the numbers have changed, the leak is in the underground water line leading to the house.

Check for greener patches in the grass

Everyone wants a lush lawn, but if one area in your yard is much greener (and growing faster) than the rest of the grass, it could be an indication of a leak in an underground water line. If the leak is very large, you may even see some puddles on the soil surface.

Examine appliances and fixtures

If the water meter test indicates a leak in your home, check the cabinets under the sinks in the kitchen, laundry room and bathroom to make sure they are dry. Also look for puddles at the bottom of tubs, toilets and showers, and under the water heater, dishwasher and washing machine. If you find puddles, turn off the faucet to that appliance or device and call a plumber.

Dye test the toilet

If you don't find puddles around faucets or appliances, check to see if the toilet needs repair, as it is one of the main causes of leaks inside. The toilet's flapper (a rubber plug that prevents water from entering the bowl until you flush it) can become brittle over time, allowing water to seep from the tank into the bowl. Take a bottle of food coloring and put a few drops in the tank of each toilet in the house. If the tank is leaking, the color will appear in the bowl within five minutes. If you find paint in the bowl, you should call a plumber.

Look for signs of leaks

If a fixture on a supply line under your sink breaks and a stream of water sprays out, you'll know right away where the problem is, but some leaks are much more insidious! At worst, water slowly trickles out of fixtures in a wall and goes unnoticed until it causes major damage.

due to Certain Events (pipe leak in the basement) i was not able to post about this earlier but i will do it now

so in my dream last night i was in target (the version of target i see in my dreams anyway. it looks nothing like my local target) and i was looking around in the clothing section and there was a bunch of folie à deux merch there for some reason? i remember a purple shirt with a picture of the album cover on it and then a red shirt that also had the album art on it but the one that stood out to me was a shirt that looked a lot like a pajama shirt that i have except it was not meant to be a pajama shirt and also had a zip-up collar. it was off-white colored and it had thin dark stripes and there were song lyrics embroidered on the center of the shirt in green thread. i noticed that at least two of the words were comically misspelled. in my dream i recognized them as lyrics from a song on folie à deux but i couldn't remember which one (i think in the dream i might've thought it was w.a.m.s.??), and the only two words i can remember seeing in my dream were "angel" and "cjke" (cjke being one of the misspelled words)
