Troubleshooting low pressure in a hot water heating system
If the pressure in your hot water system fails, you may find yourself freezing in the shower or washing your clothes with cold water. If it is, the cold water may also be affected. If only the hot water is affected and you notice the problem throughout the house, it indicates a leak or problem with the water heater connections.
Low pressure in certain fixtures
Before you suspect a leak or problem with the water heater, find out how many and which fixtures are experiencing the low pressure. If it's just one faucet, the aerator, showerhead or valve may be clogged with mineral deposits that settle more easily in hot water than cold. If you disassemble the faucet and soak the affected parts in vinegar, these deposits will dissolve. It is also possible that the shut-off valve for this faucet is not fully open. If two or more faucets have low pressure, they may be served by a common valve that is partially closed.
Low hot and cold pressure
If the pressure loss affects all the fixtures in the house, the cold water may also be affected, which could mean that the pressure regulator - located in the basement or on the side of the house - needs to be adjusted. It could also mean that the main shut-off valve is partially closed; if a plumber recently worked in the house, he may have forgotten to open it all the way. It could also be that neighbors are experiencing low pressure because the municipal system can't keep up with demand.
Connections for water heaters
After you've determined that only the hot water is affected and the pressure loss is affecting the entire system, it's time to turn your attention to the water heater. Check both the water heater inlet and outlet valves to make sure they are open, and then examine the connections between the water heater and the piping system. All connections between copper and galvanized pipes are suspect because without the protection of a dielectric connection, these connections will corrode quickly. Corrosion can affect all galvanized pipes leading to or from the heater; if these pipes are old, pressure loss may indicate that they need to be replaced.
Leaks
A leak anywhere in the plumbing system can cause a loss of pressure, and while some leaks are obvious, others are more difficult to find. Many have a leak indicator, which may consist of a separate dial. If your meter does not have such an indicator, take a reading, wait two hours without using the water, and then take another reading. A difference in readings indicates a leak, and the plumber you contact will have the tools necessary to locate the leak.

Signs that your home is in need of main water line repair
You're probably familiar with the pipes under your sink or the drain in your shower, but you've probably never thought about the pipes that connect your home to the public water and sewer system. These pipes do heavy lifting for your home. Check out these five signs of a problem with your home's main water line.
Your water bill has gone up significantly
During the summer, water bills are often higher than usual due to watering the lawn, filling the pool and even taking more frequent showers. However, if your water bill seems unusually high, you may have a leak in your main water line.
You hear strange noises coming from multiple pipes in your home
Are your pipes talking to you? If you hear gurgling coming from the sink when you flush the toilet or put it in reverse, it's a sign of a more systematic plumbing problem.
Finding sink holes or cracks in your foundation?
A leaking water main can be the cause of major damage to the structure of your home and erosion of your landscape.
Your home has low water pressure at all faucets
Clogs can be caused by household debris as well as tree root intrusion. Both a clog and tree roots can put pressure on these pipes and cause cracks. If these cracks are not repaired, they can develop into a complete pipe break.
Your water is cloudy
There are several causes of cloudy water, such as a problem with a particular fixture or with your water heater tank, but cloudy water can also be caused by decaying or damaged pipes.
If your home is experiencing any of these issues, you may have a problem with your home's main water line.
The experts we dispatch can get to the root of the problem using diagnostic cameras and state-of-the-art plumbing tools. And they have the experience needed to quickly repair or replace your main water line to minimize the damage and restore your confidence.

Insulate radiator pipes
If the hot water pipes leading from your boiler to your radiators aren't insulated, you could be missing out on potential savings on your energy bill. Instead of letting heat escape through the walls of the pipes into non-air-conditioned areas of your home, insulate the pipes to direct the heat to where you want it - the radiator. Insulating these pipes is neither expensive nor a lot of work, and over time can provide big savings on your monthly energy bills. This method can also be used to insulate the water heater pipes or the pipes leading to a radiant floor heating system in your home.
Measure the outside diameter of the water pipes with calipers or record the diameter with a tape measure. Choose pipe insulation with an inside diameter at least equal to the outside diameter of the pipes to ensure a good fit. If you use pipe insulation that is too small for the pipes, it will not provide adequate insulation.
Add the length measurements to calculate how much pipe insulation you need. You can choose foam pipe insulation that is slotted to fit easily over smaller heated pipes, or you can use fiberglass pipe insulation with a hard shell cover or insulation that has a self-adhesive tab to secure the insulation in place. All of these types can be inverted over the pipe.
Slip the insulation over the pipe and peel the adhesive backing off the flap. Close the flap over the cut end of the pipe to ensure a tight fit. Cut the insulation to pipe lengths less than the total length of the insulation - often 180 cm for certain brands. Repeat this process for any exposed pipe that needs to be insulated.
Add pipe wraps or insulation to pipe bends. You can purchase individual units designed for pipe bends or use insulated pipe wraps around these areas, secured with metal foil tape.

Tips for water heater maintenance
There are several simple and inexpensive ways to increase the operating efficiency and longevity of a water heater. Some actions - adding insulation and adjusting the temperature - only need to be done once. Others, such as flushing the tank and checking the anode rod, should be done annually.
Check the TPR valve
Turn off the power and the cold water supply valve.
Place a bucket under the pipe connected to the temperature-pressure equalization valve on the top or side of the tank. (This valve will open if the pressure in the tank becomes too high).
Lift the tab on the valve to release some water, then release it. If water continues to flow, drain the tank a little, unscrew the old valve with a pipe wrench, and install a new one.
Check the anode rod
Connect a hose to the drain cock of the tank and drain a few liters of water.
Now insert a 2.6 cm fitting onto the hex head of the rod on the top of the heater (or under the top plate) and unscrew the rod. If the rod is less than 1.2 cm thick or covered with lime, buy a new one, wrap the thread with Teflon tape, put it back into the tank and tighten it.
Drain the tank and wash out sediment.
Drain the remaining water in the tank into the bucket, then agitate the sediments on the bottom of the tank by briefly opening the cold water supply valve. Drain and repeat the process until clean water comes out of the hose.
Close the drain valve, refill the tank, and turn it back on.
Setting the temperature
Locate the temperature gauge on the side of the tank and unscrew the cover. Using a flathead screwdriver, set the temperature to 50 degrees Fahrenheit. For every 10 degrees the temperature is lowered, you can save up to 5 percent in energy costs.
Turn off the water heater or set the thermostat to the lowest setting if you plan to be away from home for more than three days.
Insulate the pipes
Slide foam over the hot and cold water pipes as far as you can reach. Insulating the cold water pipe will prevent condensation from forming in the summer.
Insulate the heater
Wrap around the side of the tank, and seal the cuts with foil tape. Do not cover the top of oil or gas heaters.
Cover an electric heater with an oversized circle of insulating material and tape its edge securely to the side of the tank.

Everything you should know about flushing your hot water tank
Like any other appliance, your water heater requires regular maintenance. As part of that maintenance, you should regularly flush your water heater's tank to maintain your water heater's energy efficiency and extend its life.
Why should you flush your water heater?
Tap water contains minerals that are drinkable, but they can also build up in your water heater's tank. Over time, these deposits form a hardened layer that blocks heat transfer between the heating element and the water in the tank. As a result, your water heater has to run longer to deliver the same amount of hot water, wasting energy.
As the water heater runs longer because of the buildup, it is more likely to overheat and damage the protective lining in the tank. The liner is important to prevent the water from rusting the tank from the inside out. In the worst case scenario, rust can cause your water heater's tank to burst. Since most water heaters hold 115 to 300 gallons of water, a burst tank is a recipe for catastrophic water damage in your home.
When should you flush your water heater?
If you keep a close eye on the water coming out of your faucets, you can tell that your water heater tank needs to be flushed. One of the first signs that many people notice is that the hot water is less hot or not hot at all. If the tank's lining has worn away, the water may also have a reddish color or an unpleasant odor and taste.
If you hear popping sounds inside your hot water tank when using hot water, it is most likely due to sediment as well. Hard chunks of sediment can break loose and bang against the sides of the tank as the water flows through it.
How do you flush your water heater?
If you are handy, you can try flushing your water heater yourself. First, turn off the cold water and gas supply and turn the water heater thermostat all the way down. This will help you avoid any damage that may occur when the heater is turned back on after it has been drained.
Connect a hose (you can use a garden hose) to the drain valve and position it so that it runs outside the foundation or to a drain in the house. Before opening the drain valve, turn on all the hot water faucets in your home. This will allow the tank to drain more quickly.
