Theee indicator LED lights showed 6-12', 2-5' & 1'. We had just missed the green light as we saw the last car a few turns up the steep hill but waited it out. We joked about timing our return so that we wouldn't have to again wait another 12'. It wasn't construction but the recent heavy weather had actually washed away a few sections of road, dropping 4-6' of roadway down the hill and now cordoned off with construction barriers to be fixed who knows when. We aimed for the northernmost point on the South Island, Cape Farewell. There are some dramatic rock features that are worth the few hundred meters of tramping up to see them as the South Island abruptly ends into the see. Pics above. The "cave" is hard to see as it is under a very high and steep cliff with no safety measure but the water actually flows into and through this dramatic hole in the mountain's base. Also you can see the water flowing in but didn't want to have a "hold my beer" moment trying to capture the wave action inside the cave. We explored all 3 of the areas we could ride to and they encompassed maybe 10 or 12km of gravel roads around the top of the island. It felt pretty remote and it was beautiful even on a gray day. Next we retraced southward with a slight detour to cruise through Collingwood before opting to stop at the Mussel Inn. In addition to the bohemian vibe, we were treated to a culmination concert of African circle drums and dance provided by a group from around the country that had come together for a 4 day drum circle camp there. I got into the beat as they accompanied my tasty and quite large New Zealand green tipped mussels. Yes Jerry, I pulled the hair patches! 😉 In the toilet though I didn't need it, instead of toilet paper there was a bin of shredded cardboard. As the rain started up again we took our leave and the next brown sign turnoff took us to the Te Waikoropupu springs. This was a great stop as the size of the springs and especially the volume of water billowing from the ground was impressive. A sizable river basically emanated from there in just a couple springs. They are the largest freshwater springs in New Zealand, the largest cold water springs in the Southern Hemisphere and contain some of the clearest water ever measured! Took some pics but hard to grasp the clarity of the water and the volume. Spoke to a couple from Madison who were riding for a couple months on a BMW 1200GS they bought from the dealer in Dunedin we visited. McIver & Veitch. They bought it and have an agreement to sell it back when done which saves them a good third over renting. Good idea for longer rides/rentals. Heading back to the highly technical Takaka Hill, after crossing that Old Takaka River (insert Larry David joke here!), I had the uber geeky idea to count the turns since it had seemed twistier than the Dragon this morning. Of course with a 10' delay at the same one way light location due to bad timing or poor planning, I had to remember I was at 222 turns while at the light. I counted 250 turns in what Ted researched to be a 14.8 mile stretch of road. That is a turn per mile rate of 16.83 turns per mile. The Tail of the Dragon boasts 318 curves in 11 miles. That is a T.P.M. ratio of 28.9. So the Dragon wins. But I have never counted the Tail's twists myself. My impression was that this road is twistier but at this point I'll just accept that all the T-shirts are correct and Takaka Hill is just a bit less twisty. Still a fantastic road that wouldve been a lot more fun if not enveloped in fog at the top and wasn't raining/wet. We then headed past our resort to the closest sizable town of Motueka. Lots of restaurant choices there since the woman at reception yesterday seemed to indicate there wouldn't be much to choose from on Sunday in Kaiteriteri and our resort's kitchen is closed for Sunday dinner. If the weather held off we would try to head there for dinner. However the rain persisted and we also found that the nighttime and slick wet turns required to get back to Kaiteriteri were strong dissuaders. We explored Kaiteriteri a bit more and found the Beached Whale which said they'd be open for dinner later. It also said entertainment 7 nights a week so that sounded good. We rolled back up the hill to our jungle unit and I actually got a one hour nap which was sweet. 😴

We headed back on the bikes in our riding boots and Goretex jackets since it was still raining lightly. I wore jeans, for a mile trip you weren't gonna get very wet unless the weather opened up on us. Ted was far enough ahead of me that I didn't see him slide on the curve approaching the main road. He didn't go down but I also slid at the exact same spot, I'm guessing at least 3-4"". Closer inspection on the return ride revealed a white painted yield sign which must've had lines 6" to 12" wide painted right on the turn covering 2/3 of the width of the lane. We had been warned in the first couple days by a biker about the painted lines in NZ. They are slippery at home too but I think they use no grit here at all on some of them. When wet they can be especially dangerous. We both almost had a real problem at that same spot which we discovered during dinner discussions. A mushroom pizza and a Coke were then serenaded by possibly the owner on guitar and a computer and equipment to provide the accompanying rhythm and occasional synthesizer. He was very good. Again mostly American stuff. Eagles, Johnny Cash, Ike & Tina, Nancy Sinatra, Van Morrison (Irish I know) etc. Good day and going to head toward Havelock tomorrow with some great looking detours to French Pass if the weather cooperates. 😴

The warm water flows down my face and slips on my chest, loosening my muscles. I stay still under the shower head and let the water runoff soothe me a few minutes. My thoughts are quickly wandering. The memories of the day before coming back to my mind: with this dinner, I could have refused… But it is clear that I did not have the courage. And I had a one-to-one dinner with Amelia. In the illusion of a couple that rings on our fingers were constantly reminding us, by the threads of light that emanated from them. But the most disturbing was not the context. The most disturbing is the way I lived this evening… and evening that I appreciated. More than reason. Blinded by the illusion that surrounds me. I had even lost myself in revealing to her a little more the man who was hiding in me by this confession of such a striking part of my past. I had forgotten at times the real reason for my presence at her side… And even more disturbing for me, I almost forgot the meaning of this dinner; the boundary between the real and the virtual had been particularly vague in the presence of this woman who fascinated me more and more. A fascination that hit me in the face on the way back to the hotel…

A few hours earlier

- Owen, could we stop at the beach? I take a furtive look at her, leaving the road for a brief moment, while I was driving our rental car. - Amelia… we are in the middle of the night… - Yes, I know, it’s just to hear the sound of the waves… I notice a close intersection that would allow me to access the beach in minutes…but I was still hesitating. - Please, Owen… I turn my head and her eyes were there again:  this look that shines more than the others, which stares at me intensely and almost calls me… the one who made me bend systematically. I refocused on the road and ended up turning at the junction that I had spotted a few meters earlier. The road goes down abruptly by diving towards the edge of the beach. I continue for a few meters, and then roughly station on the side leading to the stretch of sand in front of us. I cut off contact and get out of the car quickly. Amelia did not wait for me and is already outside, as I bypass the vehicle. A light breeze makes her hair wavy and sweeps the flowing fabric of her long dress. The air was hot around us, so she did not seem cold despite her summer outfit. She smiles at me as soon as she meets my eyes and then takes off her sandals. She then raises her dress a few inches and runs down the small sand dune in front of us to approach the sea, guided by the sound of the waves. - Amelia! She runs in front of me and I hear her laugh ringing to my ears. The little girl hiding in her seemed back, and I can not help but sketch a smile. I follow her, joining her easily in a few strides: I discover her, feet in the water, playing with the waves. - She is still good… it would almost make me want to swim… I find her eyes where I detect a hint of malice, barely concealed, while the full moon above us is the only source of light… and our only witness. - For a midnight swim… - You are not serious? - Why are you afraid? She asks me by getting closer to me. I fixed her without answering a few moments, before discerning a smile take place on her lips. - To have to join you… - Don’t worry… we’ll be quits… She comes forward again and surprises me by putting herself on tiptoe to reach my ear. - I don’t have swimsuit either… She is slowly coming off me. I feel my pulse accelerate frantically and my throat tighten. I remain in shock of this admission… or would it be a disguised offer? She scans me for a few seconds then suddenly burst out laughing. - I’m kidding, I'm not going to throw myself into the water at this time! But you should have seen your face, you were too funny a few seconds ago, I obviously got you. - I never know what to expect with you… don’t blame me for having thought you… A splash suddenly reaches the top of my knees when I understand that she had just kicked the water in my direction. - Hey, Miss Shepherd, I can put you in the water, if it tempts you so much… She laughs, letting this sweet sound rise around us, before going back a few steps and escaping from my reach. - It’s Mrs. Harcourt, I’ll remind you! I smile after her reply and her gesture. She walks away and turns back. I observe her, disconcerted for a few moments. - Owen, you come? She throws me a few meters in front of me. Her hair waves under the breath of the wind, her dress flies slightly… and the breeze that tickles my face seems to be scented with a touch of vanilla and coconut.

A smell that actually invades my nostril. I open my eyes and I realize that this smell… her smell surrounds me in the confined surface of this shower stall. I close the tap and leave the cabin, the memory of this image settled in my mind. I dry quickly and get dressed in pants and a night blue shirt which I immediately rolled up the sleeves. I leave the bathroom and I discover that the room is no longer in the dark but is bathed in intense light and pleasant. My eyes go straight to the King size bed in the center of the room: Amelia is sitting there, leaning against the headboard. Her hair is disheveled and her eyes still marked by sleep… a vision that makes me smile. - Good morning… - Hmm… good morning Owen, she whispered, rubbing her eyes. I walk into the large room of our suite, and head to the coffee table where I had drop oof my watch and… the wedding ring that sat on my left hand for a few days. I hear a wrinkling of cloth on my back and turning around after putting back my two accessories, I find her standing near the bed in her light babydoll. - Slept well? - Yes, thank you… she answers in a voice already more supported. Can I use the bathroom? - Yes, of course, go there. - Thank you, see you, she finishes with a smile, slipping away in the bathroom. I keep watching her and find myself confronted with an image that was familiar to me. An image that sent me back this bathroom door that was not commonly wood, but glass blur… a material that let me see her shadow. A babydoll then falls to the ground. Then her silhouette takes shape… she revives feelings that had invaded me the day before… and brings me back to an episode we had experienced when arriving at the hotel.

- Mr. And Mrs. Harcourt, good evening… the receptionist launch to welcome us. - Good evening Paolo. - Your dinner went well? The restaurant was to your taste? - Yes, it was really well… and very good… - Glad you liked it. The team is very attentive so I had no doubt. - They were charming… to fit a dessert to please my husband… says Amelia leaning against me, and let her hand slip gently against my chest to my belly. I look down at her, and I instantly find her gaze up at me, with a particular spark… this spark that a photographer had managed to immortalize… and at that moment, under this look, my doubts evaporate. Everything is clear: the reality of a feeling is expressed in these two blue eyes. In front of me. For me. - Mr. Harcourt? It takes me several seconds to detach myself from this hold to redirect my attention to the receptionist. - Your key, Mr. - Yes, thank you, Paolo. - Your welcome. Enjoy the rest of the evening. I get the key he gives me and I lead Amelia to the stairs with my hand on her back. She surprises me, however, because she doesn’t come off me and we move so side by side, half entwined. It’s only arrived at the steps to reach the first floor that it defeats her embrace. I guide her hand and she engages first. I follow her step by steps, the mind still marked by the revelation that had just hit me… until laughter reaches my ears. The laughter that seems oddly familiar to me. I see Amelia’s steps slow down as we reach the end of the steps. We end up walking in the hall of the floor and the laughter is a little more, associated with a whisper and quickly… groaning… sighs. We remain nailed on the spot by distinguishing a few steps from us, a young red-haired woman leaning against a door and a man in front of her, at the rather unusual hairstyle, holding her in this position and the hand slipped under her skirt. - James… open… He doesn’t react, starting to slip kisses in her neck… and the face of the lady appears distinctly to us. - Hmm, James… Two words or rather two sounds that the lady moans more than she pronounces them. A metallic sound resounds in the hallway and then a zipper. - Quick… I notice that James puts the lady’s leg behind him with one hand… and that his other hand is activated behind her. The lady’s head goes back, leaning against the door as a deep, deep sigh escapes from her. A click makes me realize that James had just opened the door. They disappear immediately inside while a loud « yes » sounds and James closes the door with the tip of the foot without leaving his embrace on the lady. Silence resumes in the hallway… around Amelia and I. The scene we have just experienced was completely unexpected and, to say the least, embarrassing. Amelia advances after a few seconds towards our suite. I follow her, key in hand and open the door without waiting. I feel the eyes of Amelia focused on each of my actions but I avoid her eyes. But I only manage a few seconds. When I meet her eyes, I find that glow that I had detected previously… but this time, it disturbs me even more because I read something extra. A striking and disturbing intensity… which reveals to me a touch of desire, dangerously attractive… She arrives before me to enter the suite and I close the door with an assured gesture. Her shoes catch my eye immediately, left loose in the middle of the room. I enter carefully in the suite but I cannot find anyone in the main room. What welcomes me is a source of light… that illuminate the bathroom. A bathroom slightly ajar where I recognize Amelia, a hand resting against the strap of her dress… who watches me behind the door with a look captivatingly captivating. I perceive the door closing gradually while in parallel this strap slips against her shoulder… under the intensity of her look that seems to call me silently.

A door noise is calling me: I rediscover then the light of the day that surrounds me and Amelia in front of me, dressed in a blue dress which comes to her above the knee, a color which matches perfectly with the sapphires which are on her finger… and I realize that I have lost all sense of time, immersed in my memories. This episode the day before makes me aware of the slippery slope that I was taking: I knew what I was representing for her, I had the proof and she seems to send me signs. More and more frequently. More and more supported. And all this upset me for a simple reason: I had no conviction that my reason would win this battle over time… I had managed to keep a face, the day before: I lay down on the couch, pretending to sleep when she was out, avoiding a new confrontation… an ultimate temptation during this evening. - Owen, I didn’t tell you enough yesterday, but thank you very much for accepting this evening… And to win, sometimes you have to know how to shorten the test or cancel it outright. - Actually, Amelia, I wanted to talk about this evening. - Yes, tell me! She walks towards me with a clear and bright smile that obliges me to remain mobilized. - I just wanted to get along well that last night was exceptional. - That is to say? - The context where we are here led us to go out like this… for this dinner… but it will not happen again… I don’t want you to think that this can be a habit, that I can play this role… - What role do you speak? You can be clearer? She asks with a slight eyebrow crinkle. - Amelia, I am your bodyguard. Not a man with whom you can go to dinner. My presence at your side is only justified by my mission to protect you… nothing else… She scans me intensely and I see her face losing her luster suddenly. - Why tell me that? - To be sure we are on the same wavelength… She is silent for a few moments looking at me. - I’m looking for my passport, did you see it? Her question totally surprises me: as if she wanted to change the subject… as if she didn’t want to hear it. - Do you not have it in your jacket? - Yes, in my inner pocket… I whisper, still disconcerted by her attitude. I observe her, absent, approaching my jacket, placed on a chair next to the bed. She slips her hand into the pocket of my jacket. She takes out two passports, including her own and a sheet of paper folded in four. I immediately recognize this letter that I took care to take with me for the trip and I perceive with concern that she keeps her eyes down on it… a letter that I had a bad idea to fold on his front… making the words perfectly readable without the need to undo. - Resignation? What does it mean? I approach her in two strides and extend my hand towards her to recover the letter but she prevents me. - Amelia… - A letter of resignation because I quote « you don’t wish to continue your mission ». you explain to me? I notice, powerless, that emotion wins her: a hint of anger and something else like a disappointment. - I have nothing to explain to you because this letter doesn’t have any more to be. The resignation was no longer an option for me, even if it remained the perfect solution. But the last manifestation of the crazy was more insidious because it concerned me from now on… he targeted me directly in his last message. - You want to stop? What did I do? - Nothing, Amelia… - It’s because of last night… what you just told me? - No, it has nothing to do with yesterday… and I repeat, this is not relevant anymore. - Anymore? Does that mean it was? I’m angry at myself for letting this word escape me. And I’m stunned by noting her insight and attention to each of my words. - You thought about it then? I remain silent while lowering my eyes, it turns out that I cannot lie to her so easily… - If you want to leave, go there… you will not be the first to turn me back when I need it… - Stop, please. I’m not going anywhere. - Why did you get this letter in your pocket then? Her question takes me by surprise. I had obviously made a big mistake by keeping this letter and even more by using it as a shield. As a constant reminder of my mission during these few days. - I understand… if you want me to treat you as a « service provider » you just had to ask… - Don’t misinterpret things… - I’m ready to go, can we go? - Amelia… - I want to leave. She places her bag on her shoulder and walks toward the door of the suite, which she opens without waiting. - You come? I think I need my bodyguard to go out? That’s why you’re here, right? I lower my eyes and sigh internally. Her reaction made me feel uncomfortable, but I could only blame myself. When I look up, Amelia is posted behind the door ajar, facing me. And for the first time since I accepted this mission, I feel a distance settling, a distance that this door half closed between us, seems to materialize. At this moment, I would have given everything to go back. To be able to enjoy her smile. But it’s a closed and hard face waiting for me on the doorstep. And despite the sun that floods the room, I don’t feel its heat… just a vacuum and an unpleasant coldness.

Epic Road Trip Day 68 – Crater Lake

We spent the night in Eugene, my home in 1975-76 while I did my Masters in Counseling Psychology at the University of Oregon. Go Ducks! We even drove by my old rental unit on Ferry Street.

While Crater Lake does not make the list of the seven natural wonders of the world, it should definitely be one of the runner-ups. It is simply spectacular. The icy blue lake sits at just over 6000 feet (1828 meters) in elevation and the surrounding shoreline climbs another thousand feet. It is deep – almost 2000 feet (610 meters) – the deepest lake in the USA, and there are no in-flowing streams to offset evaporation. That is accomplished by the winter snowfall of 53 feet (16 meters). Within the volcanic core of Mount Mazama (last eruption about 7700 years – 53,900 dog years – ago), there are two smaller lava domes, one visible, Wizard Island, and one underwater. These smaller volcanoes erupted and filled the floor of the huge crater allowing the lake to form. Amazing!

We drove the rim road surrounding the entire lake stopping at the many overlooks to see again and again the incredible vistas. After a quick picnic surrounded by chipmunks, and more picture-taking, we drove back down into the valley. I indulged in a quick all-downhill ride through the forest for 7 miles (11 km) and we came upon the Rogue River with its natural bridges where volcanic rock has sealed over the river and the thrashing white water disappears underground and passes 200 feet (60 meters) though a volcanic tunnel. Very cool!

Connection of a shower drain to an existing drain

If you are adding or replacing a shower, you will need to connect the shower drain to your home's existing drains. A new shower drain must be connected to a pipe of the same or larger diameter. Since most shower drains are 5 cm in diameter, look for an existing pipe with a diameter of 5 cm or more to connect the new shower drain.

Turn off the water lines in the area where you will be working.

If you are connecting to a horizontal pipe, use an elbow to connect. If you are cutting into a drain that runs vertically, such as in a wall, use a plumbing tee. A plumbing tee has a smoother turn at the side connection than a square or water pipe tee.

Cut two six-cm pieces of pipe from a plastic pipe that is the same diameter as the existing drain pipe you want to connect to. If you are using PVC fittings, use PVC primer and cement to glue the pieces into the fitting.

Cut the drain line you want to connect to - if you are cutting into plastic pipe, you can use a hacksaw. If it is cast iron, use a cast iron cutting tool that you can rent from tool rental stores. If it is copper pipe, use a hacksaw or an electric reciprocating saw with a fine-toothed blade.

Connect the new fitting and pipe with the rubber couplings to the existing pipe. Be sure to twist the new fitting so that the side opening is level and facing the direction you want the new pipe to go to the shower drain.

Lay the new 5 cm plastic drain pipe in the direction of the shower. The new drain pipe requires a slope of 6 mm per meter in the direction of the new connection to the house pipes. Remember that water cannot flow uphill. Support the new pipe every 120 cm with pipe hangers or plumbing straps.

Connect the shower drain to a vent pipe. Glue a tee into the shower drain so that the outlet faces up. Run the vent pipe in a 3.5 cm diameter plastic pipe from this tee to connect it to either an existing vent or a mechanical vent.

Connect the new drain to the shower with a siphon directly under the shower drain. The trap will prevent waste gases from the sewer line from entering the house. If the trap is accessible later, such as in an open basement, you can use a trap with a connection that allows disassembly to remove future blockages. If the siphon will not be accessible, use a siphon that is firmly glued.
