Cole Cancilla on Portals, August 15, 2023
Last night I met another Twinsie in interdisciplinary artist Cole Cancilla, being we were born the same day twenty years apart.  A Leo kindred with over punctual tendencies, Cole is an engaging interview and we could have talked for hours, so we kind of did.  Portals is his 14th and first solo show as he continues to surpass his own motivational goals and head towards that Fine Arts Degree from the University of Manitoba. Portals will be displayed from August 27th - September 29th at X-Cues 551 Sargent Ave, where opening night will have a special menu, come meet the artist all are welcome!  We were connected by the lovely Kelsey Cespe who joined us on air, you should also go to see her and enjoy a cappuccino while your at it:)  You can also check out Cole’s work on album covers near you as well as Fleet Galleries, Pottery Bug Studios and The Cre8ery (and find him on socials, webpage to come)

bandcamp friday recs, sept. 3rd edition
on the first friday of every month bandcamp waives their revenue share, so all proceeds from music & merch go to the artists and their labels. here’s a reclist for this month:
Fleece – Stunning & Atrocious: Better known as ‘the band with those two guys from “how to make an alt-j song”‘, Fleece has just released their third album. If you like Rostam and/or light, jazzy rock about being gay, this is an album for you.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor – Luciferian Towers: Not their pandemic-era release, but this 2017 GY!BE album is the one I’ve been returning to over and over for the last year and a half. Perhaps their sweetest interpretation of post-rock, drone, dreaming of post-nationalism sound to date.
Lankum – The Livelong Day: In the same droning vein, this 2019 release has been on my mind (and on the record player) almost 24/7 lately. Lankum’s doing some of the most interesting folk music around right now – some of the tracks here have more in common with GY!BE than Shirley Collins, and the meeting of drone with traditional folk with skilled modern lyricism is incredible.
Mamaki Boys – Patriote: Originally released in 2007 and re-released through Sahel Sounds this year, this is a “tradi-moderne” EP – Nigerien folk reframed through hip-hop. High energy, rhythmically catchy, and available for whatever price you can pay (along with Sahel Sounds’ other releases), there’s no reason not to pick this up.
Laura Niquay – Waska Matisiwin: Absolutely mesmerizing new album from Quebec-Atikamekw artist Niquay, who sings in Atikamekw. Lot of depth to this genre-melding album; check it out if you’re looking for something to sit with for awhile.
