Insight: January 8, 2017: Sometimes Persistence Is Not Enough
INSIGHT. (Dooma Wendschuh) You’ve all probably heard me say at one time or another… “You only fail if you give up”. In reality of course, the ability to pivot as new information becomes clear is an important part of not failing, but, you know, that soundbite doesn’t sound as good (“you only fail if your give up, or fail to pivot as new information becomes available”… a little long don’t you think?).
I don’t care what anyone tells you. It’s the motherf**king truth. Perseverance works. Look at Billy Bob Thornton who won his second Golden Globe tonight.
He struggled for 16 years at acting. He ran out of cash and worked a telemarketing job, and worked for an offshore wind company. He waited tables longer than almost any other actor in Hollywood. He didn’t find success until he was 41 years old when he won an Oscar for his first produced screenplay and his first ever starring role in a motion picture. 41 is pretty old to have your first success as an actor. Most people would have thrown in the towel by then.
Harland David Sanders came a lot closer to throwing in the towel. He washed out from the army, failed at all of his marriages, barely scratched out a living beset by repeated entrepreneurial failure and lost job after lost job. In his 60’s, he allegedly considered throwing in the towel permanently – suicide. But instead he decided to pursue one last entrepreneurial venture… licensing his recipe for chicken fried with eleven herbs and spices. It was by no means an instant hit. He went door to door across the country trying to sell franchises before he found success He struggled hard, and lived on the road to nearly killed himself to see it through. But by the time of his death at 90 years old, Kentucky Fried Chicken was worth nearly $6 Billion Dollars in today’s dollars (U.S.) and he had become extraordinarily wealthy & influential. He’s largely credited with inventing the modern restaurant franchise.
But even though I believe at my core that success is winning a war of attrition, the truth is Province doesn’t operate in a world where perseverance will guarantee success.
These are special circumstances.
We are not trying to sell fried chicken or get a gig as an actor.
We are operating in a historically singular moment in time. We are operating in a moment that will only happen once and our success or failure depends on whether we can catch – and ride the wave. We will not get a second chance to be the first luxury beverage in this space. We get one shot at this. One shot to win – to forever change the world - or walk away in shame. I don’t know about you, but I’m here to win. I’m doing this so the next generation can have a chance we never had. Make the world a safer, healthier less violent place.
We have the idea, the team and the ability to create a dramatically better future. We have everything going for us except for time. We need to shake off the complacency.
We need to see this for what it is. It’s not a startup in the same way your friend or cousin’s business is a startup. It’s not a weed business in the way the others our weed businesses. This is about a unique moment in time which will never be here again. This is one shot. This is do or die. And we need to fight – with everything we have.
There is an urgency in combat. That same urgency applies here. It applies now. It applies to everything we do.
In combat you’re only as strong as the others in your unit.
You need to be able to rely on them because they are the ones who are watching your back. They’re each accountable for your continued existence on this earth.
Similarly, each of us is accountable for Province’s continued existence. The milestones we set forth are missions we must accomplish. We need to stop thinking of our Gantt Chart as a roadmap...and start thinking of it as a battle plan. We miss our milestones, we lose the battle. We lose enough battles, we lose the war. I’m not here to lose. I don’t think you are either. World Wrestling Entertainment Superstar & Businessman Triple H famously distinguishes between a dream and a goal saying:‘Is that a dream, or a goal? Because a dream is something you fantasize about that will probably never happen. A goal is something you set a plan for, work toward, and achieve.’(Source for the quote: http://fourhourworkweek.com/2016/12/14/mental-toughness/)
