Acts of Translation
Late in February 2021, I was walking through the Long Island Pine Barrens, along the beginning of the Paumanok Trail. The snow-covered path was marked by the patterned boot tracks of other hikers (only two or three at the most) and the cloven hoof-marks of deer. The sky above the trees was pale blue, tinged with gray. The air was cool, crisp, dry. With each step, my boots compacted the icy slush and sometimes my boot would shift, sliding on the heavy, dense snowpack so that I’d have to compensate with a movement of my upper body and arms to keep my balance and to prevent myself from slipping.
The fourth branch of Jacques Roubaud’s “the great fire of London”, a volume called Poésie: (récit) — I prefer the French title since Poetry: (a story) is less poetic and loses a sense of meaning that I think should be there, poésie to my ear implies a movement that is lost in the more static English word, poetry, and récit (and perhaps this is peculiar to me and has nothing to do with actual French) suggests narration closer to that when a storyteller speaks to a listener who receives the récit and so completes the action, a story doesn’t necessarily require a reader — begins with the Narrator (Roubaud) moving through space, in this case, the space is urban, the streets Paris.
Early in December 1994, I was walking in Paris. The sky was gray, low, the air humid, warm.
For walking in Paris, I wear a blue K-way jacket, and a cap, also blue. The K-way was a gift, not something I’d picked out. It was light, blue, waterproof, costly.
For walking in the woods, I wear an olive green jacket made by Patagonia that zips up the front and has a little pocket over the left breast where I can store my phone for easy access. Around my neck, I wear my “Doctor Who scarf” knitted by my mother. (The scarf isn’t a replica of any of the long scarves worn by the Fourth Doctor, played by actor Tom Baker, but a spirited recreation of the sort that anyone familiar with the various scarves featured in Season 12 through 17 of the TV show would immediately recognize.) On my head I wear a black bowler hat I purchased at the museum shop of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2018 when I took my mother and son to the Magritte exhibit. (The next summer, I would take my wife and son to Brussels to tour the permanent Magritte exhibit at the Musée de Beaux Arts. The study of Magritte’s art and writing is a principal concern of my Project.) The clerk at the shop said this style of bowler hat is the exact same one worn by René Magritte when he was alive. So it should be no surprise that I’m pleased with it and wear it every opportunity I get, and especially when I’m out on my daily walk.
Before the pandemic, I walked every afternoon through the pine barrens. This was easy enough since the office where I perform my paid work (not at all literary) is located in the middle of the pine barrens. There are a network of trails that lead through the woods that are immediately accessible from the back door of the building where I work. A year ago, my office was closed, so that I now work from home. Now my afternoon walks (usually) are taken along the streets in the neighborhood where I live in the village of Long Neck. I’ve become a familiar sight in the neighborhood as the man in the bowler hat. My neighbors wave to me and sometimes will view my unusual headwear as an occasion for conversation. What kind of hat is that? asked one neighbor. Another fellow walker assumed I’m a fan of Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of A Clockwork Orange, a novel by Anthony Burgess. I’m more a fan of the book than I am a fan of the movie, but my bowler hat is most deliberately a nod to Magritte and not to Alex and his three droogs. Throughout the pandemic, Magritte and his art has been my life line.
On his walks in Paris, Roubaud doesn’t wear a bowler — his cap is of a different sort.
I bought the cap in New York, at J.J. Hat Center, at the corner of Broadway and 42nd Street. It’s a hat made in Scotland and the salesperson assured me that it was the same exact style of cap worn by Sean Connery in the film The Untouchables. It’s no surprise that I’m happy with it.
After I’m vaccinated and I feel like taking the Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station again, maybe I’ll go to the J.J. Hat Center myself and shop for a hat. Although according to “the internet” J.J. Hat Center is now located at 310 Fifth Ave (between 31st & 32nd), not far from Penn at all. If/when I do go in to the city, I’ll want to pay a visit to the Fountain Pen Hospital. A man can never have too many hats or too many fountain pens.
I could go along in this vein for quite some time, this leisurely stroll through Roubaud’s Poésie: (récit) allowing his text to guide my own thoughts, reveries, musings, etc. The resulting text would function as a companion text. I’m walking along with Roubaud in Paris as he moves from the National Library, past familiar restaurants, along familiar streets…
I passed between the tops or periscopes of the licorice icebergs of the Buren columns, making sure not to slip on their outgrowths/extensions [? the French word is excroissances, but it’s not obvious to me what these outgrowths or extensions might be], on the damp grills, slimy, soaped with crushed beige leaves. And I made it through with no accidents to Place Colette, on the right side of the Théâtre-Français. This route was well known to me.
...but Roubaud himself is not walking with me, only his text, or perhaps he is with me as an invented copy of an imaginary Roubaud that I carry within myself as I read and as I walk along the snow-covered Paumanok Trail thinking of his book, or books (one book in seven volumes called collectively “the great fire of London”).
I read the first two and a half branches (the first three volumes to be translated into English), starting with Branch One: Destruction in the fall of 2018. Without really intending to, I wrote a little book of jottings while reading Roubaud’s novel. I called my little book, In the Labyrinth of Forking Paths, since “the great fire of London” is “a story with interpolations and bifurcations” with actual links indicating different narrative paths the reader can take during their wandering reading. I was reminded (though only a little) of the choose-your-own-adventure books (published by Bantam) I read when I was a kid. One of my early attempts at writing fiction was a “literary” choose-your-own-adventure called (imaginatively enough) Into the Labyrinth (a slight variation on a title of one of Alain Robbe-Grillet’s novels, Dans le labyrinthe, with whose hyper-descriptive nouveau roman style I’d become bewitched, a style ideally suited to such text adventures). (I published my Into the Labyrinth as an interactive fiction designed for a media platform that worked only on those early generation iPods. I have no idea if anyone ever read/played my interactive fiction even though according to the app, mine was the most downloaded story. It was certainly the longest.) I won’t claim that I have been waiting for the remaining four volumes to be translated into English. In fact, I felt a certain level of contentment with the artificial truncation of the novel — I had read all that I could, all that was available in English, so now I could move on to other things, like reading the works of Miklós Szentkuthy. Procuring and reading the rest of “the great fire of London” wasn’t a tempting prospect until Anthony, author of the blog, Time’s Flow, mentioned that he’d purchased the remaining volumes in French and would be making an attempt to read them. That was all it took. If Anthony was going to do it, then so would I. I ordered copies from a bookseller in France and they arrived last Friday in the post. So when did I get the idea to translate these remaining four volumes into English myself? Was it a serious idea or just another of my fanciful projects? Project 7139: translated two thousand pages of Jacques Roubaud’s “the great fire of London” into English. (For the record, I’m currently working on Project 3 which I started twenty years ago. Project 4 is “write a masterpiece that will establish my literary reputation.” That one might take awhile.) Certainly, I would read these other branches. Or would I? My track record for finishing big projects is not stellar. (The first time I read Proust, it took me ten years.)
While walking in the snow in the pine barrens, I thought about why I was being pulled back into Roubaud’s book. What was it about his very long prose that attracted me? Was this a momentary literary crush or had I fallen for “the great fire of London”? If this were a romance, you could say that Roubaud and I met in the fall of 2018 and spent some time together, mostly walking. We shared our mutual interests, talking about poetry, literature, and mathematics. I learned a great deal about haikai (haiku and haibun), gained a new appreciation of the works of Charles Dickens, and was introduced to Nicholas Bourbaki, and then resumed my own mathematical studies after a hiatus of twenty years, this time beginning with set theory and topology. And then it was over. He had to go. We parted ways.
Then two and half years later, Roubaud pops up again at a party hosted by a friend, this time we’re speaking French — my French is better now, so it’s much easier for us to talk and now I feel something different than I did before. We’re making a real connection. I can feel it. And Roubaud seems somehow changed. When we first met, I was the one who was paying attention to Roubaud, accompanying a new master, and learning new things. Now, this new Roubaud, this French-speaking Roubaud is interested in me, keeps asking me questions, asking for my opinion. Then it dawns on me. Roubaud has chosen me. You’re the one, he says. I’ve picked you.
Of course, this isn’t an exclusive relationship. Such is the way with authors and their books. Readers must share the objects of their affection, but still it feels different when a book chooses you rather than you choosing it.
I’m choosing you. I’m ready whenever you are. Shall we begin?

☆ . · . miguel bernardeau, twenty-one, male, he / him . · . ☆ fitzwilliam 'fitz' phénix-alvarez lives in that huge mansion over there! no, not that one. look for white stucco walls & terracotta shingles and that’ll be it. the nhl defenseman has offered occasional glimpses of soft yellow walls and an impressive collection of plants in the background of social media posts, but all of that is nothing compared to seeing the opulence in person. they’ve remained protective as ever since moving to tercet court two months ago, but it seems like they might’ve gotten a little more mistrustful too. maybe that’s why they’re rumored to have such a distant relationship with everyone else who lives on this street. ☆ . · . ooc info: ollie, they / them, 21, est . · . ☆ career claim: cale ma/kar.
BASICS
Full name: Fitzwilliam Phénix-Alvarez Nickname: Fitz Birth date: September 29th Languages: English, Spanish, Quebecois Francois Hometown:
PHYSICAL
Age: 21 Weight: 196 lbs Height: 6′2″ Body build: athletic, lean Eye color: grey-blue Faceclaim: Miguel Bernardeau Glasses or contacts: neither
Tattoos: a raven in flight over his left shoulder blade, monochromatic vines winding up his left bicep
Scars: most predominantly a thin scar near the base of his neck where a skate slashed him when he was fourteen ; several other smaller scars of less note, especially on his hands --- much less noticeable
PERSONALITY
Good personality traits: observant, calculating, protective Bad personality traits: mistrustful, dishonest, aggressive
Fitz comes across as very confident and in control, and at ease in his skin. The truth couldn’t be farther from it. He works hard to put forward the easy front he does --- and some days he can’t tell which one is more real. He has a dishonest smile that masquerades as honest, and a tendency to manipulate those around him when necessary to shed suspicion off himself. He can be almost charming at times, at least extremely amiable. Despite all this, Fitz is not rash or impulsive -- in fact everything he does is carefully calculated, though he goes to great lengths so it does not come across as so. The one place he feels truly effortless is on the ice.
He finds it hard to truly allow people close to him and to really see beyond the most superficial layers of himself. Furthermore, there is a deep-seated fear of not being enough and being forgotten ; he finds it easier to not let anyone close so there’s less chance of this happening.
THE STORY ( i rly was gunna try to write this nice and eloquently but... u get this instead 😔 )
— fitz was born to up and coming spanish actress reyna alvarez in chicago. the result of a messy one-night stand, but reyna ultimately decided to keep the baby. he is indeed named after fitzwilliam darcy from pride and prejudice bc his mother’s first breakout role was in a film adaptation of the book and she loved the book after reading it. how unfortunate for him.
— his birth father was never in the picture, but the man he would come to know as his father came into the picture a year or so after his birth. already one of the top architects in north america, paul robert phenix was in chicago for a conference and he and reyna fell in love. fitz has been told it’s was all very romantic. so then the happy family moved to pittsburgh where his father’s architecture firm was based.
— despite growing up with two parents who raked in a fair amount of cash, they made sure nothing was just given to fitz. they’d both had their humble beginnings and big believers in tough love, they made sure not to spoil their son. they did however make sure he was sheltered from the media when it poked around and the two things they did pay for without question were his education and sports.
— he started playing hockey when he was six after seeing a pens game on tv while they were out at dinner and knowing he just had to do it --- and never stopped. he got recruited to the us national team development program when he was sixteen and spent his last two years of high school in michigan living with a billet family most do who are with the program, which gave him a huge sense of “normalcy.” but really he was far from normal, his development taking great steps over those two years leading up to his draft year.
— queue the cale ma/kar career claim lads aka all the hockey development & logistics u can probably skip if u don’t care laksdjf:
one year before graduation and a draft, he vocally committed to playing at university of massachusetts - amherst. he went fourth overall to the la kings in the 2017 draft ( yeah technically irl that pick belonged to the avs but sh ), and proceeded to remain loyal to his commitment and play two years at umass despite his new top five prospect status. he was put into a first pair role from the start of his freshman year ( 2017-18 ), was a huge part in bringing the umass team up from the bottom of the standings. he plays for team usa in world juniors 2017 and 2018.
his sophomore year ( 2018-19 ), they make it all the way to the frozen four. fitz gets announced as the hobey baker winner and the day after they get knocked out of the tournament. not long after that he signs his entry contract with the kings and finishes out the season with them. he scores his first nhl goal on his first shot in game 3 of the first round of playoffs irl the kings don’t make playoffs but again shh. they get knocked out in the first round and fitz goes home and trains harder than ever.
he come back to kings training camp the next season ( 2019-20 ) more determined than ever to make the team. he does so out of camp and has an incredible rookie campaign. he gets injured in december and misses a few games but is back mid-january. fitz is given the calder ( award that goes to the best rookie in the nhl ) at the end of the season. technically cale hasn’t won this yet but we all know he will.
— la is a bustling city and fitz is a fan of one night stands : he just doesn’t feel like he has time for a relationship and hookups scratch that itch. he’s not an asshole about it, really. there is typically that understanding that this is a one time, no strings attached thing. but this one girl he sleeps with in march obviously does not get this memo and continues to not get the memo. she starts seriously stalking him in the following months and eventually he gets a restraining order against her ( use ur imagination kids ). he’s not really comfortable staying in his own apartment downtown for the time being though after he still sees her around. he stays with a teammate until the season ends, which then brings us to his connection to tercet court.
— paul robert phenix, now world reknowned architect, had a hand in designing several of the homes on tercet court, including one in the style of old money spanish mediterrianian villas that he designed with his wife in mind to be their new home. fitz’s mother had loved the house and moved in for a few years after the court opened but with her taking fewer roles up in the movie industry and getting exceedingly more lonely, she decided to embrace the more nomadic livestyle of her husband and moved out about a year and a half ago. since then the home stood vacant ( though certainly still cared for by several paid landscapers and maids ) until fitz’s dilemma arose a few months ago.
— a few phone calls and a begrudging agreement to pay the extremely steep taxes on the place for the year ( again, tough love and fitz may be a pro-athlete but he’s still making less than a million a year with his entry level contract ), and fitz moved in about two months ago ( say mid-may ).
MISC
— tri-lingual. father is french-canadian and his mother is spanish. needless to say he grew up a little confused. that worked itself out soon enough though. uses he uses quebois french in-season kind of frequently to talk to a couple teammates. really only uses his spanish to talk to his mother and family.
— since moving in fitz has filled the mansion with plants. he absolutely does not seem like a plant guy but he is... absolutely loves it. his major at umass was kinesology bc he thought it would be the most helpful and knew he wasn’t going to graduate but he snuck in some out-of-major classes on horticulture. truly just likes plants a lot. they don’t judge him.
— probably set up his own puck shooting pad in the backyard. why not there’s enough space. he had to retrieve a couple pucks from the bottom of the pool though which has been good incentive to not miss the net lmao. he also has revamped one of the rooms in the house to have synthetic ice.
— runs in the morning before it gets hot. skates a few days of the week in the afternoon. home gym in the house is definitely a perk but he prefers to work out with others because it feels more productive.
— probably drives like. a range rover.
— offensive defenseman. likes to jump up in the rush and is good at break out passes as well as zone entry. earned his place quarterbacking the first powerplay towards the end of the season. he can be quite physical when he needs to be though and don’t ever go after his goalie. ( his nhl.com player page )
— he’s not a recluse by any means, but he has no desire to built connections in tercet court so probably hasn’t actively reached out. they’re likely to have met outside of the small community or if your character forcibly came and introduced themselves. or if they knew each other already mayhaps??
— oh and he’s bi. like really really bi. obv not advertised given his career path but he’s not having some crisis over it either. it just is. probably has a stack of nda’s next to the condoms ready to go at anytime alsdkfj.
OOC
hey lads. i’m ollie !! for those around for round 1.0 of this rp i played alya ( the sports photog ). i am back and this time going back to what i do best : playing hockey boys 😔😔😔.

“Mom! Do I have to go to school?” Kelsi whined as she stomped into the kitchen. You nodded absentmindedly as you served Kellan’s breakfast.
“Yep. Don’t wanna hear it, Kels. Kellan, phone down at the table.” Your daughter whined and stomped her feet over to the table.
“So unfair.” She groaned as she rubbed her hand over her five and a half month along baby bump.
“It’s your fault you got knocked up.” Kellan teased as he broke off some of his pop tart and shoved them in his mouth.
“Kellan, I will kill you!” Kelsi shouted as she lunged toward her brother.
“Kelsi, sit down! Kellan, leave your sister alone, damn it. It’s enough!” You glared at your kids and handed Kelsi a smoothie. “It’s just enough.” The three of you looked up in different directions as Chibs came in to get his breakfast at the same time Mike came in to take Kelsi to school for second period.
“Out’a m’ouse.” Chibs said simply with a dismissive wave of his hand.
“Dad.” Kelsi sighed as she grabbed a lid for her breakfast.
“Nope, m’ouse, m’rules. ‘e can still take ye ta school an’ ‘e’s still a prospect bu’ ‘e’s still no’ welcome in m’ouse.” You rolled your eyes at your husband but choose not to say anything as you handed Kelsi her lunch. You gave her a kiss on the cheek as she grabbed her backpack and followed her boyfriend out the door. The second it latched behind her, you rounded on your husband and whacked his stomach.
“Cut the shit.” He shrugged dismissively as he poured himself a cup of coffee. Your eyes narrowed as he turned around to look at you as if he wasn’t in the wrong and once again, you found yourself squaring off for another fight with your old man. “Kellan, go to your room.”
“Aw, mom.” He whined.
“Kellan! Go!” You heard him huff over the sound of his chair scraping on your tile floor and you and Chibs stood in a stare off until you heard his door close. “What the hell are you doing?”
“I don’ ‘ave ta like ‘im, (Y/N)!”
“That’s not the point here, Filip! The point is, you are doing every single Goddamn thing in your power to push our daughter out of our lives. You get that, right?”
“She’s no’ goin’ anywhere, luv.” He snapped as he gestured to the door. “‘e’s no’ stupid enough ta take ‘er away from Charmin’…”
“No but he loves her. And if she tells him to jump he’s going to ask how high in a heart beat. You are pushing my baby away…” You almost instantly burst into tears and Chibs lost any and all fight in the situation.
“Shit… luv I’m sorry…”
“That’s our daughter, Filip and our granddaughter. We have to support… ev-everything…”
“I know. Shh, I know. I’m done fightin’ it, m’luv.”
“She gets you every time with the tears…” Kellan said as he leaned against the door frame leading into the kitchen.
“Boy-o, ye best ge’ yer smart ass ta the truck ‘fore I beat yer ass.” Chibs growled as he turned to glare at your son. Your son and his smart mouth ran through the kitchen as fast as he could to get away from his father’s current wrath.
“Why are you boys such assholes?” You sobbed as your husband ran his hand across the back of your head.
“Because we’re assholes, luv. Simple as tha’.” You nodded at him as he took a step back and gently kissed your forehead. “I’m sorry, (Y/N).” You nodded again as he brushed your tears away.
“Don’t apologize to me. Apologize to Mike and Kelsi. Because they are the ones you have been upsetting the most in the past five and a half months.” He nodded at you as your son honked your car horn so he wouldn’t be late for middle school. “I’ll see you at work.” Chibs nodded as he grabbed his cup of coffee to finish it quickly so he could get to the club, too.
——
“Is this Mrs. Telford?” Your brow furrowed as you looked away from the computer to give the woman on the phone your complete attention.
“Yes, this is.” You heard the woman hum on the other end of the call as you sat back in your chair.
“Mrs. Telford, this is Karen Smith from Charming High School. I’m calling to find out if Kelsi was home sick today and you may have forgotten to call…?” Your stomach turned as you quickly sat up straight.
“What? No, she went to school today.” You jumped up from the chair and walked as quickly as you could toward the club house to try and find the prospect.
“I’m sorry, Mrs. Telford. She wasn’t in second or third period.” You nodded to yourself as you yanked open the back door to the club.
“Well thank you for letting me know. I’ll call her cell phone now.” You barely heard the woman say good-bye as you ripped open the doors to the chapel, not giving a shit about the rules. “Where is that little prick?” You spat as you looked around the room for Mike.
“Luv…?” Chibs tried as you found his eyes.
“Kelsi’s not in school.” You said as you pointed your finger at him. “I fucking told you.” You turned on your heel and left the chapel as you started calling your daughter. Her phone went straight to voicemail and you took a deep breath trying to steady yourself as Jax grabbed your arm.
“What the hell is going on?” You shook your head as you tried her cell again while grabbing his cigarettes from his kutte pocket.
“Chibs kicked Mike out of the house again this morning when he came to pick up Kelsi. She was already complaining about not wanting to go to school… Kelsi, it’s mom. You need to call me right away. I’m not mad, I just need you to call me so I know you’re OK.”
“Call every charter we got.” Jax said as he turned back to the other Sons. “I want every single man available looking for them.”
“Luv, we’ll find them.” Chibs tried as Juice got on the phone to start putting the word out. Your eyes narrowed at him and you shook your head.
“I’ve been warning you for months, Filip. Now let’s just pray to God my baby comes home.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“She’s gunna come home.” Lyla said as the two of you sat in the living room of your house, staring at the front door. You shook your head and tears rolled down your cheeks as you absentmindedly ran your fingers through Kellan’s hair. He had refused to leave your side for any reason since he got home and despite the fact that he would never admit it to anyone, he had cried himself to sleep with his head on your lap about an hour before.
“I should have let her stay home.” You said for probably the hundredth time. Lyla shook her head as she rubbed your back reassuringly.
“She’ll come home, (Y/N).” Your head shot up as the sweep of a set of headlights across your front window but the distant rumble of motorcycles made your heart nearly stop. You let out a choked sob, that woke up Kellan as Chibs, Jax, and Opie came into the living room.
“Let’s go to bed, Kel.” You said as you completely ignored your husband. You got to your feet and dipped your shoulder out of his reach as you followed your son to his room.
“Can you call her again?” He asked as he climbed into bed and scooted all the way across the full size mattress. You nodded as you lifted up the covers and got into bed beside him.
“Hey! It’s ya girl, Kelsi! You got my voicemail because I’m probably out with my boo, with friends, or at school. Leave a message at the beep and I’ll get back to you. Oh, and yes dad, I know that time curfew is!” “The mailbox you are trying to call is full.”
You played the message one more time as Kellan curled up against your side with tears in his eyes.
“She’s gunna come home, right mom?” He asked softly as you set your phone on the bedside table. “I promise I won’t pick on her anymore.” Your already shattered heart broke even more as you held onto your son as tightly as you could.
“She’ll come home, baby. I know she will. We just have to give her some time, ya know?” He nodded his head as you pulled up the blanket over his shoulders.
“Momma… can you sing?” Tears welled in your eyes and you nodded against the top of his head.
“Of course, baby.” You saw a shadow fall across the wall in front of you from the hall way as you started singing ‘Three Little Birds’ to your son. You closed your eyes and shook your head subtly as you rubbed Kellan’s back until he fell back asleep. As you laid there singing the same song over and over, you could hear Chibs crying from the hallway behind you. You let him sit and wallow in his misery for nearly twenty minutes before you carefully reached your hand back and snapped your fingers to get his attention. With a simple, slightly awkward wave of your hand, you heard him get off the floor and come over to the bed.
“Anything?” You whispered as he climbed into Kellan’s bed behind you. He shook his head as he wrapped his arms around the two of you.
“Keep… keep singin’… please luv?” You nodded as you laced your fingers with his on Kellan’s side but no matter how much you didn’t want to, you cried through every single word.
#32: Season 1, Episode 7 - “Foodzilla”
Louis convinces Ren to let him do a live news segment on the school lunch lady for the Wombat Report. Unfortunately, his inability to be serious turns the story into a fiasco -- ultimately causing the lunch lady to quit her job.
The episode opens with Louis and Ren walking home from school. He’s nagging her and asking “please?!” over and over. This is obviously setting us up to wonder what the heck he’s asking for. Side note: I love how even though I know they filmed the interior shots of the house on a set, I STILL like to think they used the real house from time to time, lol. This is another one of those instances. They’re walking out and about in the real world, up until they reach their front door. You can’t tell if they’re still outside or if they’ve captured great artificial “natural” light. Gahhh. You can also hear legitimate sounding wind and cars driving by, which is either great sound editing or... ya know, they were actually at the house. In which case.. IT TOTALLY IS THE SAME INSIDE!
Yeah, this is definitely (probably) my wishful thinking talking tbh. The more I stare at these images the more it looks like a set with bright lights... But still.
Anyway, nerd analyzation aside... Turns out Louis desperately wants to host a segment on the premiere installment of the Wombat Report, which Ren is in charge of. He says that he could make her a comic masterpiece, which is where Ren immediately shuts any prospect down. Naturally, she absolutely will not allow it because she thinks Louis is incapable of taking anything seriously. I don’t blame her. If only she could lighten up, though.. Louis probably could’ve delivered something great, hilarious and take it seriously. I would’ve loved to see that, tbh.
Literally a million scenes/lines from this episode were used in Disney Channel promos for the show. Including “You think I need to shave my pits?” “I rest my case.” which happens around this point of the episode.
Louis heads out to the backyard, where Eileen is attempting to do Tai-Chi. The only problem is that she can’t find the right music to help her relax. Louis confides in her about the Wombat Report situation, and she tells him if he really wants to do it, the only option is to take it seriously and present Ren with a professional idea. She invites Louis to try exercising with her “Do this with me! It’s called: Golden Chicken Stands on One Leg.” Louis gives up right away and says:
So freaking good. Louis Stevens is all of us.
Eileen eventually looks though Ren’s CD collection for better relaxation tunes and chooses Limp Bizkit. Oh my god. “The Limp Biscuits. That sounds relaxing” she says. bahaha I can’t.
The next day at school, Louis tries to figure out a good idea for a story and goes to Twitty and Tawny for help at lunch. Twitty suggests that he do a behind the scenes look at his band, The Alan Twitty Project! Ahhhh! This is the first ever hint at the band arc! :D He also says that his lead singer has mono. The number one sickness mentioned on teen shows that literally no one I’ve ever known in real life has contracted. We get another one of those lines used in promos here: Louis: “You think I’m just some goofball who can’t be serious?” Twitty and Tawny: “...........yeah.”
Right about now is when Louis gets the bright idea to do his story on the school lunch lady.. played by Wendy Worthington who’s been in a zillion things you’ve probably seen. Including “Tower of Terror” -- the single most horrifying movie to ever air on Disney Channel. (Well, except for “Don’t Look Under The Bed.”) There’s a decapitated corpse and doll in the film. Just sayin.
She’s honestly really good at playing a creepy lady, I guess. Also, the little girl is Morgan from Boy Meets World... which instead of a direct parallel, you could consider a 6 degrees of separation deal between this show and BMW. I mean, that’s kinda reaching... but.
Just for the laughs, here’s me on the ride at Disney World. I was... well, terrified of it, but oddly obsessed at the same time. Also, that is my uncle laughing at me to my right.
Louis presents Ren with a rough draft of his report “The Lunch Lady: Life Behind The Hairnet” which seems extremely promising. Ren thinks so too, and allows him to do the segment. We sort of get mirror talk that night... but not really. It’s just Louis practicing various ways to act on air -- another bit used in promos.
Okay, we’ve finally reached the debut of The Wombat Report! For some reason Ren can’t correctly pronounce “Wombat Report” and says “Wombat Waport” I never understood this until I asked my mother for confirmation today. Louis refers to her as “Bawa” (a.k.a Barbara Walters) at one point, so I always assumed this was a reference to her or something... turns out my assumption was correct. I apologize for being an uncultured swine.
They start off with a “Coming up...” intro that features a character named DaNica Henderson (played by Alexis Lopez from The Luck Of the Irish, whose sister is Bianca Lopez a.k.a Mandy “Always Gets Her Man” Sanchez! Holy crap!) To quote Season 3 Louis:
DaNica says “Ever wonder what happens to the fines you pay on overdue library books? I have a shocking report.” And the camera zooms out to reveal a fancy sports car in the librarian’s parking spot:
Like, wth?! lol. Imagine if the librarian saved up enough piddly overdue fines to buy a freaking lambo or something?! omg. What’s funnier is that I’m picturing the stereotypical, old lady librarian driving around in that car.
They segue to a sports report by the underused Artie Ryan. Yesssss. He’s interviewing Twitty about a recent basketball game. This scene cuts to Louis, who’s on next, telling Tom (who of course is the AV guy/cameraman) that he’s just gonna wing the interview with the lunch lady. Not good. When it cuts back to Artie’s segment, we get another one of those backends to a random sentence from Twitty: “...Let’s just say it’s the last time I played without a cup.” Oh my god. Chill, Disney. Twitty takes this on-air opportunity to say that his band is looking for a bassist. Artie leans in like “Hey! I play bass!” lol. This is so great because Artie goes on to join The Alan Twitty Project/Twitty-Stevens Connection! Again, very cool to see the band arc starting to form. Gotta love solid continuity.
It’s time for Louis’ report and, well... this is just one of those absolutely iconic scenes ya gotta embed:
youtube
“It’s FOODZILLA! Tokyo is dooooomed!” (At least, I think that’s what he’s saying.)
..........as you can see, Louis started off his live-streamed interview sort of okay? And then it all just went down in flames pretty quickly. Only Louis Stevens could take an interview from a simple question, to a full out food war between the news crew and the Lunch Lady. It’s actually pretty hilarious, but you just cannot help but cringe at the fact Louis f’d up… again -- Much like his meltdown in Wild Child. But, I’m ranking this disaster higher because I find it less horrible than tarnishing the name of his own family and jeopardizing Eileen’s campaign on television. It’s a lil less cringy than that, which makes it funnier. I love how he shouts “MAN DOWN! I’ll try to get’cha out! I’ll try to get’cha!” as if they’re literally at war, which is too much lol.. and also predicted Shia’s future...? (Again, I’m reaching, but STILL.) That ending shot scene of Ren fuming with anger was also used for promos. Actually, you can just check out this promo video I posted recently to see every moment I’ve mentioned so far and then some.
To Ren’s surprise, everyone (including Principal Wexler for whatever reason) loved Louis’ segment and thought it was hilarious. DaNica refers to it as “phat” which definitely dates the show, lol. Just like that, Ren switches gears and tells Louis to prepare another segment. Wow. Unfortunately, at lunch that day.. all the kids start taunting the lunch lady by screaming “FOODZILLA!” at her. This one kid was the first one to shout it, and I always thought he was Khleo Thomas (Zero from Holes) lol:
The lunch lady is obviously mortified and runs away into the kitchen. :( Louis and Ren feel incredibly remorseful. When they get home from school, they tell Eileen everything and she forces them to go to the lunch lady’s house and apologize. (This is also the “You are a horrible little person” bit. As seen in that darn promo I linked.)
They go to her house later that night, and she reluctantly invites them in. We learn that her name is Elsa Schotz, and she “shows them who she really is” by yodeling for them. I don’t know how that’s supposed to reveal her true colors, but ok. We find out that she came over on a boat from Europe to become a professional yodeler, but sadly no one cares about yodeling in America — which is most definitely extremely factual. Have you ever heard a Top 40 yodeling hit? Honestly, why would ANYONE travel to America of all countries to pursue a yodeling career? She was already in Europe! That seems like something you’d go to Germany or Switzerland for??? I feel like this is a career endeavor you’d research where it’s most lucrative before moving to another country? Anyway, once she found out that yodeling work literally does not exist in the US, she started cooking at the school for money. But, now she’s depressed because she’s being made fun of.
This information somehow leads to Louis and Ren giving her a makeover??? I never realized it before, but that almost makes no sense? The kids at school weren’t making fun of her for the way she looks, but rather, because of her crazy outburst. I’d be so insulted and confused if I were Elsa. Is the makeover just a way to... somehow distract from the Foodzilla thing? Idk. She forgives them in the end though and her new-look gives her a confidence boost.
Where’d they get that outfit? Did she just happen to have something snazzy like that in the back of her closet? or did they seriously glamify her uniform?
They were pumped for the kids at school to see the “new and improved” Elsa Schotz, but she doesn’t show up the next day. Turns out she struck up a relationship with the school janitor and they eloped to Las Vegas to get married. Still a better love story than Twilight.
And that’s pretty much it! The short return after the last commercial break is Louis yodeling for Eileen while she does her Tai-Chi.
This episode remains super memorable. Probably because how many freaking scenes they used on commercials! It also aired a lot as well. Like, wow. But other than the actual Foodzilla scene, the rest of the episode is just a little bland and slightly random at times haha. It’s still good though. It’s nice to see Louis and Ren work together to help Elsa in the end.
Thoughts?
The Absolute Best New Restaurants of 2018
The opening of Frenchette marked the return of two of New York’s best-loved chefs. Photo: Hanna Pavlova
As always in this perpetually bustling, restaurant-mad town, 2018 produced a bumper crop of new and interesting places at which to sample things like spicy mi fen rice noodles from the kitchens of Hunan, say, or tandoori-sizzled lamb chops, or homestyle Persian banquets of roast lamb served with crunchy triangles of tahdig rice and great wheels of fresh-baked bread. Here you’ll find the annual, tortured, highly debatable ranking of our very favorite new restaurants, listed in order of general preference. And like we do every year, we offer the caveat that these are all winners, and that we’d be equally happy to return to any one of them at any time — depending on our mood, of course, and the state of our bank accounts.
1. Frenchette 241 W. Broadway, nr. White St.; 212-334-3883
Frenchette’s duck frites. Photo: Melissa Hom
Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson’s much-praised Tribeca brasserie isn’t the most ambitious new restaurant around town (yes, it’s been another banner season for expensive, high-minded tasting rooms), nor the most antically theatrical (thank you, Salt Bae), and their mentor, Keith McNally, would certainly have questions about a few of the aesthetic choices in the clamorous, sparely decorated dining rooms. But the return to the kitchen of these two great masters of the old French canon is certainly one of the most edifying comeback stories of this dining year, and for those of us who are fans of classic, chef-centric specialties like grainy, perfectly turned pork rillettes, or roast country chicken, or calves’ brains prepared in the Grenobloise style, so is the cooking, which more than in any new restaurant in the city this year combines the elevated qualities of first-class ingredients and age-old technique with the timeless, comforting pleasures of a good old-fashioned feed.
2. Atomix 104 E. 30th St., nr. Park Ave. S.; no phone; atomixnyc.com
So what separates Junghyun Park’s hyperpolished little establishment from the rabble of effete, high-end tasting rooms that continue to pop up relentlessly around the city? Let’s start with this talented chef’s particular mission, which is to introduce New Yorkers to the sophisticated wonders of high-end Korean cuisine beyond the familiar parade of noodles and barbecue, a seminar which includes informative cards accompanying each course, and a running dissertation with the waitstaff on the intricacies of, say, curing and fermentation. Then there’s the carefully articulated, generally delicious food itself, which, depending on when you drop by, might include candied cubes of wagyu sweetened in a variety of fruit juices, or tiny segments of duck breast that Park and his cooks sear, roast, then sear again, before garnishing them with an alluring substance called gochujang mole. Finally, there’s the modest, even neighborly bar upstairs, which might just serve the finest à la carte version of spicy Korean-style chicken wings in town.
3. Oxomoco 128 Greenpoint Ave., nr. Manhattan Ave., Greenpoint; 646-688-4180
In what’s arguably been the best year for new Brooklyn restaurants since the early pioneer days of Roberta’s out in Bushwick, Justin Bazdarich and his band of barbacoa savants have produced a casual Mexican joint that even the taco snobs at Michelin can love. The tequila and mezcal drinks are plentiful; the excellent moles, salsas, and soft, purple-hued masa tacos are all carefully crafted in-house; and during the course of the day at this sunny, L.A.-style establishment in Greenpoint, almost everything on the deep, deceptively sophisticated menu (half-chickens, charred vegetables of every kind, lamb and beefsteaks, the great brunch-time “pambazo” burger) gets thrown on the fire-belching grills at the back of the room. The stars of the show, however, are the tacos, which chef de cuisine and Empellon veteran Matt Conroy stuffs with all kinds of exotic combinations, including chunks of tempura shrimp and Thai basil, and a mouthwatering, slightly heretical version of al pastor tacos made with the usual sacred bits of pineapple mingled with chicken thighs instead of pork.
4. Sushi Noz 181 E. 78th St., nr. Third Ave.; 917-338-1792
It’s always been chic, in New York’s high-end sushi circles, to be able to trace your lineage back to the old masters in Tokyo, but few restaurants have ever managed this trick in quite such a theatrical way as this polished little atelier on the Upper East Side, where full kimonos are the uniforms worn by women on the waitstaff, and the hushed little rooms are constructed from woods like cedar and cypress fit together without nails in the ancient sukiya style. But what separates this pricey new omakase palace from the rest of the gilded herd is chef Nozomu Abe’s expertly presented menu, which in sourcing, execution, and traditional flair (cod milt soup, anyone?) is about as close as you’ll come to the real thing in this sushi-saturated town, short of hopping on a flight to Tokyo.
5. Saint Julivert Fisherie 264 Clinton St., at Verandah Pl., Cobble Hill; 347-987-3710
The announcement of a new Alex Raij and Eder Montero restaurant is always a happy occasion, but when the joy of seafood is the specific theme in these seafood-challenged times, it’s cause for special celebration. You’ll find all sorts of strange little wonders served up in this little railcar-size Cobble Hill dining room, including silvery anchovies plated with little moons of unmelted vanilla butter, bowls of risotto folded with chopped conch and smoked eel, and that ugly-delicious Catalan speciality, goose barnacles, served with proper ceremony in a fold of white linen. Die-hard beef lovers should call for the Prego sandwich, a kind of Portuguese steak-bomb, which you can get dressed with a mess of fat fried oysters for an extra fee.
6. Sofreh 75 St. Marks Ave., nr. Flatbush Ave., Prospect Heights; 646-340-0322
Persian cuisine is not something you tend to hear much about when nattering, food-obsessed New Yorkers get together, but at this convivial, stylish townhouse establishment just off Flatbush Avenue, the chef-owner, Nasim Alikhani, brings this venerable dining culture alive in a variety of inventive, satisfying ways. Pay attention to the rice (served in steamy, saffron-flavored platters, or in crunchy triangles called tahdig), and to the blizzard of small plates (the kofteh meatballs, the vegetable dips and spreads), all of which are designed to be consumed in a communal lather with oval slabs of fresh baked bread. And pay attention to anything involving the delicious, fresh strained yogurt, which is served as a drink (with mint and rose petals), as a garnish (with lamb shanks and kebabs), and, in the warmer months, as a luxurious dessert topped with spoonfuls of sugary marmalade.
7. Shabu Shabu Macoron 61 Delancey St., nr. Allen St.; 212-925-5220
Mako Okano’s impressive one-woman dissertation on the joys of the communal Japanese hotpot called shabu-shabu wins this year’s competition for the pound-for-pound best new restaurant in town for many self-evident reasons. The prices ($128 for seven courses, along with other tastes and morsels) are slightly higher than at your average shabu-shabu joint, it’s true, but you’re not going to find marbled slivers of wagyu or pork like this elsewhere on the hotpot circuit (not to mention uni served with homemade yuba on a spoon). And the combination of focus and intimacy makes a visit to the snug eight-seat operation down on Delancey Street feel less like a standard restaurant dinner than a private event cooked up by the chef at her dining counter at home.
8. Adda 31-31 Thomson Ave., nr. Van Dam St., Long Island City; 718-433-3888
Chintan Pandya, the chef at this bustling little Long Island City canteen, has cooked in grand kitchens all over the world, but according to the loquacious gentleman who brought us our tandoori grilled lamb chops one happy afternoon, he considers this casual little place with simmered goat brains on the menu and a metal shanty-style roof over the bar to be “his idea of the perfect restaurant.” After polishing off the tender double-cut chops and those brains (served with toasty buttered rolls for mopping up), as well as a variety of other home-style Indian delicacies (spicy, buttered chicken tikka, loose squares of paneer that Pandya and his cooks curdle in-house), and what is possibly the finest mango lassi in town, it’s easy to see why.
9. La Mercerie 52 Howard St., at Mercer St.; 212-852-9097
Like all great Parisian cafés, Marie-Aude Rose’s stylish little downtown dine-and-shop operation (it’s located in the front of a Soho boutique) has a little something for everyone — including, if you wish, bundles of fresh-cut flowers that you can order when you arrive for your lobster salad or bowl of chestnut velouté, and pick up after you’ve finished eating. Our favorite meal is breakfast, when the kitchen serves bowls of crème anglaise with slices of warm brioche and the sun slants into the room in a particularly Parisian way, but you can get a superior version of boeuf bourguignon starting at lunchtime, along with a fine selection of that durable Breton-style speciality, buckwheat crêpes, which the kitchen folds with creamed chicken, and serves, speckled with sugar and a squeeze of lemon, for dessert.
10. Gem 116 Forsyth St., nr. Delancey St.; 917-473-3223
Gem’s sunchokes. Photo: Liz Clayman
There are many things to like about Flynn McGarry’s official New York restaurant debut, from the intimate tasting-room layout (diners sit at small tables instead of the usual formal bar), to the laid-back L.A.-style décor and vibe (flickering low-lit candles, a woodsy color scheme). But mostly what we like is the cooking itself, which veers from a kind of polished Japanese influence (local raw clams over ice, uni sprinkled with pumpkin seeds, diver scallops wrapped in shiso leaf) to some of the best elevated vegetable creations we tasted all year (truffle-rolled carrots, ash-grilled sunchokes, slow-roasted pumpkin spooned with melted Gruyère), all of which make it difficult to believe that this wunderkind cook just turned 20.
11. Momofuku Ko 8 Extra Pl., nr. 1st St.; 212-203-8095
The Momofuku dining empire is an increasingly sprawling, populist business these days, but if you want a window into that restless sense of high/low innovation that has characterized David Chang’s restaurants from the very beginning, this modest à la carte operation, which opened earlier this year off the tasting room down on the Bowery, is a good place to start. You’ll find crêpes made of sourdough on the ever-changing handwritten menu, and strange late-night snacks rendered in fancy, almost-gourmet fashion, like the famous fried chicken served cold and by the piece, like leftover morsels straight out of the fridge. There are candied char siu-like strips of steak loin, too, and scoops of ice cream folded with buckwheat, although the dish we still can’t get out of our heads is ye olde duck-and-foie-gras pie, which is encased in a shiny, Victorian-era crust, and rich enough for a party of ten.
12. Hunan Slurp 112 First Ave., nr. 7th St.; 646-585-9585
The specialty of this accomplished little East Village venture is the delicate rice noodle called mi fen, favored in the southern parts of China, which chef-owner Chao Wang had presumably been pining for during his time subsisting on containers of carryout food in New York. There are ten varieties on the menu (topped with nourishing combinations like the Three Delicacies’ oyster mushroom, Berkshire pork, and an egg roll; carefully arranged fans of tofu and sliced beef; and numerous kinds of barnyard pork), although many of the other, rarely-seen non-noodle Hunan specialties (helpings of fish served in a mingling of milky pork and fish bone broths, the offal lovers’ Hunan charcuterie) are worth a special trip.
From Palestine to Mexico, All the Walls Have Got to Go! (Monday, May 20, 2019) 7 PM - 9 PM @ Southside Commons 3518 S Edmunds St, Seattle, Washington 98118 These days, the headlines are filled with Trump's proposal for a border wall, news about brutal family separation policies and baby jails at the border, police murdering Black people in the US, Islamophobic attacks, accusations that Congresswoman Omar is "anti-semitic" because of her criticism of US foreign policy in Israel, and anti-boycott legislation at the federal and state levels. How are all these things connected? What does it mean to build a powerful movement for change that connects these issues and wins change that actually reduces the harms of systems of policing, imprisonment, border enforcement, and colonial dispossession? Join us for a conversation between Maru Mora Villalpando and Nada Elia
Maru is the community organizer at the forefront of work aiming to close the Northwest Detention Center. She has been targeted by the Trump administration for deportation based on her activism and works to build a radical, visionary, border and prison abolitionist migrant justice grassroots movement in our region and nationally. Nada Elia is a diaspora Palestinian writer, organizer, and teacher who was one of the first activists to work to expose how US law enforcement trains with the Israeli military and to build coalitional feminist work to oppose it. Maru and Nada will be talking about the overlapping and interconnected law enforcement technologies being used to target migrants to the US, US communities of color, and Palestinians, and exploring how we build internationalist anti-law enforcement and anti-military resistance. This event aims to strengthen all our imaginations and strategies for building safety through solidarity, not law enforcement.
When a Filipino American studies class brings them together, they must work with each other amidst personal troubles, the challenges of friendship, and family struggles. Will the five of them be able to learn how to understand each other and, more importantly, how to understand themselves? Or will their differences and difficulties prove too great for them to overcome? Identity Defyned will explore the ever-changing perceptions and definitions of identity and address a question pondered by many – “What does it mean to be Filipino?”
Four Thoughts: Call It In The Air
1. With the first round of the playoffs over and the Tampa Bay Lightning stunningly out of it, I wanted to return to the trade that basically began the Rangers rebuild. When McDonagh and Miller were traded to Tampa at the deadline a little more than a year ago, a reporter had asked Steve Yzerman, now ex-GM of the Lightning, why they liked making deals with the Rangers, to which Yzerman said, “because they have good players.” However, nobody told anybody in the Lightning organization that the real reason the Rangers made all those deep runs was because of a future Hall of Famer minding the crease who raised his game with each passing Game 7 the Rangers made the fans suffer through. This point isn’t made to bash Ryan McDonagh, who served admirably as Rangers’ captain, but McDonagh hasn’t played all that well with the Lightning when it has really counted. Regular season stats are fine and all but when people talk about your career, how you did in the playoffs is front and center. McDonagh has been downright awful in the playoffs as a member of the Lightning. McDonagh himself was admittedly bad in the Eastern Conference Final against the Caps last year and didn’t do much more to improve in 4 games this year. In fact, McDonagh’s maligned cross ice pass in Game 1, which directly led to Nick Foligno’s goal to get CBJ on the run Tampa couldn’t stop is going to be forever known as the moment that entire series changed. So was the McDonagh/Miller trade to Tampa worth it from a Ranger perspective? Without getting into the picks and prospects in the NYR pipeline that can’t be fairly judged for at least another couple of seasons, I’d say the early returns aren’t bad.
2. Ditto for Kevin Hayes who couldn’t even find the ice in the playoffs in six games for the Jets, averaging only 11:59 per game. Hayes had been moved all around the lineup, including putting him at wing just to give him time. Winnipeg’s situation is extremely interesting and one that the Rangers should have an ear to the ground on. Jacob Trouba is most likely on his way out and Hayes could be right out the door behind him as well. I think it’s entirely possible that NYR could wind up with both players come later this summer, provided the cost of RFA Trouba’s rights would be something Gorton could pay. Hayes is a UFA, so getting him back at the cost of nothing could be interesting if they get manage to drop some dead weight. I know it’s a bit of a lateral move, but I’d be curious to see if NYR could move Shattenkirk to Winnipeg, who is 5 years older than Trouba, hold back a little bit of salary to make the money work on Winnipeg’s end for Trouba’s rights and perhaps say a third rounder in 2020. In a perfect scenario perhaps.
3. If you told any Rangers’ fan just 6 weeks ago, that NYR had three first round picks in the draft this year, you would probably say that they were the Rangers’ pick, Winnipeg’s and more than likely Tampa’s. Very few would’ve figured that Dallas’ first rounder this year would still be in play leading into the second round of the playoffs. Zuccarello has been an integral part of the Stars team that knocked the Nashville Predators out of the first round. Dallas going deeper into the playoffs puts Stars GM Jim Nill into an interesting bind, if they manage to make it to the conference final, which forces their first to NYR this year and then tries to re-sign him, which puts Dallas’ first into Gorton’s lap in 2020. I really can’t see Dallas willingly parting with both picks. Something is gonna give if Dallas makes it to the Western Final.
4. Lets go over my first round predictions and offer new ones for the second round. First round result in bold font.
(CGY in 6) Avs in 5- The Flames had absolutely no answer for the Avs top line at any point in this series. Mikko Rantanen didn’t look hindered by injury at all. The Flames got no secondary scoring behind Gaudreau. James Neal will be on the back of milk cartons all summer.
(VGK in 5) SJ in 7- Holy cow, that Game 7 was something. Rough start for Vegas as a franchise to lose in the Cup Final after a magical run last year, followed up by a stunning Game 7 loss. Have to figure they’ll be back again next year. I don’t think the Sharks have another deep run in them like they did in 2016, especially with Pavelski out, but kudos to them for hanging around and stealing that series away.
(DAL in 7) DAL in 6- I think out of this series we can finally put to rest that the Preds have the best blueline in the league. The Stars made them look old and slow. Dallas’ top two lines are scary and having Zucc there adds a different element they haven’t had in a long time.
(WPG in 6) STL in 6- We always hear in the playoffs that every now and then, a goalie steals a series and that’s what happened here. Jordan Binnington has been some story. I personally wouldn’t put him in the Calder conversation but over a full season, he would’ve given Elias Pettersson a hell of a run for the trophy. Back to back seasons where the Jets go into the offseason with more questions than answers. More so this summer than last.
(TB in 6) CBJ in 4- Plenty of funny stories on social media about TB fans burning jerseys and tickets and the like, but they have every reason to be pissed about how their team played down the stretch and into the playoffs. Jon Cooper did not have his team ready to play for playoff hockey and it showed. How many chances can Tampa possibly keep giving him before the fans say “enough”? Does the current CBJ team remind anyone of a better version of the 2011-12 Rangers? It does for me.
(BOS in 7) BOS in 7- Death. Taxes. Bruins over the Leafs in 7. Mike Babcock’s seat has to be just as hot as Jon Cooper’s is. These veteran coaches shouldn’t be immune at getting so many chances to get over the hump. At some point, Leaf GM Kyle Dubas should be given the chance to go get his own coach who shares in his philosophy. He might only have to look as far as his AHL team. It’s not a secret that this coach and GM don’t always seen eye to eye.
(WAS in 6) CAR in 7- How much did the Caps miss Oshie after he went down to injury? We know as NYR fans how Hagelin’s game can transform a playoff team with his straight ahead speed and PK’ing ability, but he can’t replace the offense Oshie provides. Of the four wildcard teams still left, I think the Hurricanes have the best chance at taking the whole thing. They put up a ton of shots and get good enough goaltending. It’s enough to hide some mistakes. We’re about to find out if the surging Hurricanes can crack “Fort Never Lose” if it’s able to re-locate to Brooklyn. (PIT in 5) NYI in 4- Have to give it to the Isles. They’re playing good team D and they’re getting good enough goaltending. That’s how you win in April, May and June. The Pens need to explore blowing it up at some point. There’s a lot of smoke that they might move one of their big pieces there at some point soon and yes, that may include Evgeni Malkin.
Second Round: DAL in 6 COL in 6
CBJ in 7 CAR in 6
21 Fantasy Hockey Rambles
Every Sunday, we'll share 21 Fantasy Rambles – formerly 20 Fantasy Thoughts – from our writers at DobberHockey. These thoughts are curated from the past week's ‘Daily Ramblings’.
Writers: Michael Clifford, Ian Gooding, Cam Robinson, and Dobber
1. Sasha Barkov is on another planet right now. The 22-year-old is absolutely feeling it these days. He has 17 points over his current seven-game streak. He’s set career-highs for goals (34), assists (53) and points (87). And there’s still seven games left to be played.
He’s one of the most underrated players in the game today. Barkov has just six total penalty minutes while averaging 22:27 per contest. That mark trails only Connor McDavid (23:03) and Leon Draisaitl (22:33) as the Oilers ride their only horses right into the dirt.
The best is yet to come for the Finnish pivot. (mar20)
2. Ducks’ Rickard Rakell is looking at a huge dropoff this season from 69 points last season to possibly finishing with around 40-45 points. His low goal total (14) can be explained by a low 8.0 shooting percentage, about half of what his career average is. Look for Rakell to be a possible rebound candidate next season that you could probably draft as a value pick. Over his last 12 games, he has turned it up a bit with 11 points over that span. (mar23)
3. Coming off a 64-point season, there was a lot of optimism for Yanni Gourde. He had been a diamond in the rough for many in the fantasy hockey community (I do believe Dobber was high on him a few years ago) and that faith finally paid off.
Things haven’t been as rosy this year, even if he’s been solid with 20 goals and 44 points. So, what’s the deal here? Quite honestly, it’s nothing more than a high on-ice shooting percentage coming back down to a more normal level.
Last year, the Bolts shot 11.5 percent with him on the ice at five-on-five. That was second among all forwards in the NHL with at least 1000 minutes at five-on-five last year. Not much else has changed; Gourde’s shot rate has gone up slightly, his IPP went down but it’s not unsustainably low, and though his PP time has been cut down by about 20 seconds, he’ll only fall short of last year’s PP point total by three or four. It’s not nearly enough to explain his 20-point drop. That explanation, my friends, belongs to an unsustainably high on-ice shooting percentage in 2017-18 dropping in 2018-19. (mar21)
4. Avs' Philipp Grubauer might be the best waiver-wire pickup in net over the fantasy hockey playoffs. Grubauer stopped 29 of 31 shots he faced in a 4-2 win over the Blackhawks on Saturday. He has now earned four consecutive wins, allowing just four goals over that span.
It’s been a tale of two seasons for Grubauer, who had a disastrous 3.47 GAA and .890 SV% in early February. Since then, he’s been a different goalie with a 6-2-0 record with a 1.05 GAA and .965 SV% over his last 10 games. More importantly for Grubauer keeper owners, he’s improving his cause to be the Avs’ starting goalie next season. (mar24)
5. Habs’ Brendan Gallagher now has a career-high 33 goals and has reached the 30-goal mark in back-to-back seasons. He’s also taken a minimum of 270 shots in each of the past two seasons.
Over the past two seasons, he’s now a top-20 goal scorer and a top-10 shot taker. The low assist totals deflate his overall value in points leagues, but you can easily find assists from other players in multicategory leagues. (mar24)
6. Only Kris Russell has more blocked shots over the past five seasons than Andy Greene. The Devils’ captain offers little else in fantasy, including relatively low penalty minute and hit totals. He has, however, hit 30 points twice in his career and could come close to that total this season (23 points) on a team that is playing out the string. (mar23)
7. Josh Bailey is normally a reliable option for assists and overall point totals. As expected, his point total slid as a result of John Tavares departing, but he has still been good for at least 35 assists and 50 points for the third consecutive season. Bailey has never scored 20 goals in a season, which means it shouldn’t be a big surprise that he has just three goals over his last 18 games and that includes a pair on Saturday. (mar23)
8. I know 14 goals and 31 points for Jordan Eberle is a letdown fantasy-wise, but let’s be clear about the Islanders here: they’re one of the worst scoring environments in the NHL. Entering weekend action, they were 21st in goals/60 minutes at all strengths in the NHL, worse than the Oilers and just ahead of the Devils.
It should be mentioned at this point that Eberle has only played about one-quarter of his five-on-five time with Mathew Barzal this year. After Barzal’s line, there isn’t much fantasy-wise on this team, even if Brock Nelson is having a decent year. (mar22)
9. Coming off a year with 33 goals and 64 points, there were high hopes for Minnesota’s Jason Zucker heading into 2018-18. With 21 goals and 39 points to this point this season, he hasn’t quite lived up to those expectations.
The biggest problem is that he was shooting 7.2 percent at five-on-five entering Saturday action, a career-low. Over the previous three seasons, he shot 10.4 percent on aggregate. With 166 shots on goal at 5v5 so far this year, that dip in shooting percentage means five fewer goals compared to what we’d expect if he was shooting his three-year average. If he were to shoot roughly his average from the last two years alone (12 percent), he’d have an extra eight goals and would be one shy of another 30-goal season. It’s easy to see why there’s been such a dip in goal production.
Zucker is still just 27 years old and though the Wild are kind of re-tooling, they should still have a strong core for next season with rising young players. If I had to make a bet today, I would wager that Zucker will be an easy buy when fantasy drafts roll around in six months. (mar22)
10. As a Canucks’ fan just hoping for better things next season, I would seriously shake my head if coach Travis Green gave the nod to Jacob Markstrom on consecutive nights.
If the focus is on development to some degree and not entirely on clinging to playoff hope, then Green will do the right thing and start Thatcher Demko. The Canucks’ goalie prospect was impressive in his last start, stopping 29 of 31 shots in earning a win against Chicago on Monday. (mar24)
Reminder: The 2019 Dobber Hockey Playoff Draft List is available now for pre-order in the Dobber Shop! It will be released on April 5th which gives fantasy owners plenty of time to get ready for their playoff pools.
11. It’s been an excellent fantasy season for Kyle Palmieri with 27 goals, 50 points, over 200 shots, 42 penalty minutes, and a good chance at reaching both 20 power-play points and 100 hits. That’s with missing Taylor Hall for over half the season and the team running half an AHL lineup for the last few weeks. (mar22)
12. I know the Ducks have been injured and bad for most of this year, and Cam Fowler’s production has suffered as a result with 21 points in 54 games as he battled his own injuries, but does anyone realize Fowler doesn’t have a 40-point season since 2010-11?
Among 171 defensemen with 2000-plus minutes over the last three seasons, he was tied for 125th in individual shot rate with Jamie Oleksiak entering Friday action. Fowler doesn’t put up strong peripherals in hits or blocked shots, either. He’ll probably be cheap in drafts next year but man oh man, there isn’t much to like here fantasy-wise and there’s no guarantee the Ducks will be much better in 2019-20. (mar21)
13. We all know scoring is up. But just how high is remarkable. What’s the difference?
Well, teams are shooting a bit more. Goaltending equipment has shrunk. But what’s really driving things can only be explained by an increase in performance. The young talent that enters the game on a yearly basis has made life very difficult on oppositions coaches and goaltenders. Let’s push to embrace this style, and push for more power-plays in the future. One day, I’d like to draft a player who has a legit chance at posting 150-plus points.
Dare to dream, people. Dare to dream. (mar20)
14. Tuukka Rask recorded what might have been the easiest shutout of his career early this past week. The Finnish netminder turned aside just 13 shots as the Bruins blanked the Islanders 5-0 on Tuesday evening. The big news in this one was the return of David Pastrnak. After missing nearly six weeks with an injured thumb, the 22-year-old was back to his old spot on the top line next to Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron.
The Penguins also received a massive boon this week when Kris Letang returned to the lineup after missing nearly a month. The team’s top blueliner didn’t miss a beat as he scored a goal, recorded four shots, 12 penalty minutes and skated a team-high 26:45 in his first game back on Tuesday. (mar20)
15. Remember when Freddie Andersen was one of the best fantasy netminders? The Danish puck-stopper has been flipping the bird to his owners during the fantasy playoffs for the better part of two weeks. He has stabilized in his last two starts, but heading into last Tuesday night’s matchup with the Preds, he had allowed 14 goals in three games. (mar20)
16. Brent Burns reached 75 points on the year this past week, reaching that mark for the third time in the last four seasons. Though some of his peripherals like shots per game and blocks per game have fallen off, he’s been as productive as ever, and that’s why he’s the top defenceman in fantasy. (mar19)
17. Rangers forward Pavel Buchnevich was a guy I thought could do very well moving up the lineup post-trade deadline. In 33 games in calendar 2019, Buchnevich has 11 goals and 19 points in 33 games, which pro-rates to 27 goals and 47 points over 82 games. He’s done this while playing less than 14:30 per night in that span.
I will continue to bang this drum until it happens: Buchnevich is on the cusp of being fantasy relevant in all formats, he just needs a coach to give him the consistent minutes. (mar19)
18. It’s that time of year where it’s hard to pay attention to the dregs of the league, but it’s worth noting that after his current recent hot streak, Jakob Silfverberg is up to 23 goals on the year, which equals his career-high set in 2016-17. I will say that while this is pretty cool for Silfverberg, this is kind of disheartening for fantasy owners.
I don’t think I’m the only one who was waiting for the 28-year old Swede to have *that* magical season, where he posts a high shooting percentage and explodes offensively. Because he does currently have the highest shooting percentage of his career (14.9 percent) by a wide margin (previous high of 10.1 percent in his 23-goal season).
Unfortunately, he’s missed some games due to injury and the team was terrible and injured basically up until a month ago, and that has kept his assists to a minimum. (mar19)
19. I’m disappointed in Anthony Beauvillier given his golden opportunity alongside Mathew Barzal for most of this year (until recently), but I’m guessing it came about one year too soon.
I’ll be still interested in landing him as a depth guy for next season and see what happens, but man, he’s had every chance this year – from linemates, to ice time, to prime zone starts, to pretty good secondary PP time. All for maybe 30 points in the end?
20. Some signings straight out of college:
– Last week the Leafs signed undrafted free agent defenseman Joseph Duszak. He had a massive junior year in the NCAA with 47 points in 37 games, plus 42 PIM. He’s 21, a little on the small side (5-10) but can move the puck. His next two season will likely see him in the AHL but I think he has potential if developed properly. You can check out our PNHLe graph on Duszak here.
– Detroit signed LW Taro Hirose, a shifty winger for Michigan State, as a free agent. Hirose had 50 points in 36 games in his junior year. I included Hirose as a player to watch in the NCAA free agent section of my Midseason Guide. The Wings also signed another player I had in the MSG as a free agent to watch – Ryan Kuffner. He was Max Veronneau’s linemate and ended up outscoring the more highly-touted Veronneau 44 points to 37 (in 31 games).
– Veronneau, as you know, signed with Ottawa and promptly picked up an assist in his second NHL game, and his first goal in his third. He picked the right team to sign with, even if he wasn’t already from Ottawa. This team is going to be young next year and he has a reasonable shot of making it.
– The Canucks signed another guy I listed in the MSG (so I had four out of the five big names last week in the Midseason Guide) – defenseman Josh Teves. The NHL squad isn’t exactly flush with prime puck-moving defensemen, so I’ll be interested in seeing his impact. It’s a shame he’s not a right shooter, or I’d like him even more.
21. Devils’ Travis Zajac had been having himself a great season, not only becoming one of the best defensive forwards in the game but also managing to put up decent points while doing so. A month ago, his points-per-game average was higher than it’s been since 2010., but with all the injuries to the Devils, Zajac no longer has a supporting cast and everything is falling apart in terms of fantasy numbers. His Hits are up and his PP time is up, but in the last 15 games he’s a minus-15 with just five points.
Have a good week, folks!!
