If you would like you can give your reasoning cause it’s fun to discuss poetry
After Many Springs by Langston Hughes
- would relate both to Midsummer Nights Dream as there are fairies and Puck is a fairy, but also I think in some sense it would relate to Neil losing his childlike wonder due to the expectations of welton and the pressure put on him by his father
Tumblr media
The Boy Scout Pledge by Michael Glatze
- would talk about him and Todd, how everyone saw their relationship as romantic but they didn’t outwardly say anything and then Neil died, so I think Todd would see it as one of those ‘take it to the grave’ secrets so it can be just theirs and untainted in a sense after Neil died, but especially them coded with the parts about not sneaking to the lake when there is that deleted scene of them at the lake and the mention of reading Walt Whitman poetry when Neil calls Todd Walt Whitman
Tumblr media
The Burning by Venetta Octavia
- would be about Neil and his father, his fathers anger and Neil just keeps following what he tells him to do, not because he wants to but because his father will exert more anger if he doesn’t so he is just appeasing him while this resentment towards him grows

Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan Thomas
- would be in some sense the viewer to Neil as the viewer watches him calm that night, walking into death willingly. In this poem, the speaker is telling the audience to fight their death before we find out he is actually pleading with just one specific person, his father, to fight against death as he lies there on his deathbed
Tumblr media
Icarus Flew by J Bengt
- would be comparing Neil’s story to that of Icarus as Neil too felt trapped his whole life before he broke free, soared for only a moment before his descent to his death
Tumblr media
Judas by K. Wright
- would be another Todd and Neil poem, Todd would be Judas and Neil would be Jesus; Neil wearing the crown of thorns (puck’s wreath) while clothed similar to Jesus on the crucifix (in the sense they are both shirtless with little clothes) before he walks to his deathspot like Jesus did with carrying the cross, both ending bloody, and Todd running out to the lake or left wandering and wanting and never to see Neil’s face again
Tumblr media
Of wildflowers by J. Sullivan
- would be him denying the expectations others put on him (like Welton) and instead him wanting to be free like nature (I especially think the free like nature would relate to the heavy nature scenes in midsummer nights dream, his one freedom and the one thing he wanted, so it ties to what he would likely see as freedom, which is the play)
Tumblr media
Book of tahkemoni iirc quote by Rabbi Yehuda al-harizi
- would again be about Todd and Neil and how it wasn’t socially acceptable to be with someone of the same sex
Tumblr media
Wild Geese by Mary Oliver
- would be Neil coded for the freedom and connection of nature (which we already discussed before how nature ties back to the play, which is Neil’s freedom) juxtaposing his guilt and despair, promising to give him an escape from his guilt and despair
Tumblr media
Kinder than Man by Althea Davis
- would relate to Neil killing himself in the hopes of finally being free of his father, hoping death is kinder than his father was. Neil committed suicide because his father wouldn’t let him live life how he wanted to and was retaliating against Neil for disobeying him and doing the play, so in some sense Neil was killed for simply living because this is the first time Neil did something he wanted that made him feel alive instead of suppressing his emotions to listening to his father, and he got punished to the point that death seemed like the kindest option
