Tsoji lets go of you for a moment to shift to his hands and knees. You watch, lost and confused and somewhat mourning the loss of the water he’d just pulled from the stream… and then he moves backward, stepping into it. 

The stream itself is a little lower down than the place you are sitting. Not very much, it would be as if you were daring to climb the stairs in their house. (They have not shown you what is up there. You have not asked.) The water is deep. It rises nearly to Tsoji’s knees. He holds his hands out to you and twitches the fingers in a beckoning motion. “Come.”

Again you stare at him for what feels like an inappropriate amount of time while you struggle to get the body to work with you. It is so much harder to puppet it with the circlet on, but taking the circlet off means you are able to use your curse (blessing) freely, which is bad. Unacceptable. Finally you manage to grab onto him, and he pulls you up and down into the stream with him. You are shorter and so the cold water rises over your knees. You shudder and shake, as if you had not expected it to be cold. You just felt it with your hand! Of course it is cold.

“There we go… This time of year, it’s usually safe to get into the water,” Tsoji says. He holds your hands as he talks, and does not make you move. Does not do anything, really. “But when it gets warmer, the snow in the mountains will melt, and it will fill the stream up. Then the current will be too fast to risk getting inside.”

“Snow…?” You don’t know that word. Or melt. Or current, or.. Or any of this.

Tsoji explains it, though. The life cycle of water, he calls it. How it turns into the clouds overhead, and then rains down and forms the rivers and streams and lakes and the sea… how sometimes, the air is so cold that the water freezes on the way down and becomes snow. How there are places on this planet where it is so cold all the time, that the water never melts and stays frozen. Ice. You know that concept. Kaii’s blessing from Kuuli is ice.

You remember the messages, then. Remember that Kaii is talking about a mothership being built to follow you through the gateway, since it seems that you survived. That you are being watched at all times.

“Can… can I sit?” You ask, overwhelmed by it all.

Tsoji does not reply, other than to pull you with him down into the water itself. It rises to your shoulders, chilling you to the core. You can feel the way it moves on its own. One big force flowing in a single direction, the current, with little tugs where it is interrupted by objects in its path. Objects like you.

“Is this too much?” Tsoji asks when you are silent for a long time.

You shake your head- no- yes- it is but– 

“Maybe… maybe if Trionnoa had streams, Mauya wouldn’t have died,” the words come out on their own, it seems. You hadn’t ever intended to say anything about it. Tsoji and Atsia did not see that message. They don’t know.

This review discusses themes of death, loss and terminal illness, as well as containing language. I swear a fair bit. Sorry, I typed everything as I thought of it, bad words 'n all.

Good afternoon,(it is 9PM in Ireland) fellas! Welcome to: SPIRITFARER- REVIEWED BY A TEENAGE GIRL WHO IS VERY NORMAL ABOUT HER INTERESTS!! Move over, IGN- it's the weird little guy in the corner (me)'s time to shine! I simply word-vomited this so unfortunately this review is very unprofessionally worded- however, I have faith it will be a fun read. I hope. Also, it's mostly spoiler free! ...I hope! I'm sorry!

So! Hi. I'm Luca. I have crippling thanatophobia. What's that? A phobia of death. And what's Spiritfarer about? Oh, baby. You aren't gonna fuckin' believe this! And, would you believe it, this game... actually helped me with that fear!

Currently, I'm only nine hours in, but. Well basically the damage is irreparable and I fear I shall never be the same again. Now, luckily, I have not cried. Yet. But I will! Oh, BABY I will!!! I have gotten five spirits so far (I'm coming for you, Gustav/threat) and have already had my first trip through the Everdoor. I wasn't ready. Come back, my dear. Please.

Spiritfarer is a game I've wanted to play for quite a long time, so to have been able to buy it about a month ago was one of the most exciting parts of my year so far. No, really! I was HYPED! HELL YEAH, THIS HAS BEEN ON MY WISHLIST FOR AGES! That kind of feeling. And then I started playing, and... hooooly shit. Guys. Dudes. Bros. What the hell. The VISUALS. WOW. W-O-W WOW!!! HOLY BALLS!!!

Look at this. Witness it with your eyes.

Bloody breathtakin'. I'm in tears. The game is absolutely chock-full of colourful (and not so colourful) locations, characters, landscapes... god, I'm so unwell about the visuals. And the ANIMATION!! AUGH! Every character has unique animations that just... oh they illustrate their characters so well. Augh...

Atul is nearly always happy, bouncy and smiley in his animations- a reflection of who he is!! One of his happiness perks is playing joyful music! He is literally just a guy! And Alice! Alice is a kindly old lady, and this is reflected in her design and personality- one of her animations involves dusting herself off, and I just think it gives the perfect image of a sweet elderly woman simply making herself more presentable. Also, she calls you dearie. What if I started bawling? What if I threw myself on the ground roaring and wailing?

Another favourite of mine is Astrid. She's also a kindly old lady- but with sass. Alice is an absolute sweetheart, but Astrid? Astrid won't say no to a cheeky bit of gossip now and then...but shh don't tell anyone gossip is bad shhh HEY WANNA KNOW ASTRID'S NICKNAME FOR STELLA??? Munchkin. What the hell. I love that nickname. Wish I had an adoptive granny that would call me Munchkin. Astrid, my most dearest darling, how I adore you. AND she's pro worker's rights- damn, what a woman. Also, her eating animation is funny. Absolutely DECIMATES a sandwich, so she does.

Tragically I will shut my yap about the characters now as there are quite a few of them and unfortunately I cannot put anyone through that (but know that Gustav and Daria also make me insane), so let's move on, eh? Who fancies a bitta tunes? I sure as hell know I do! LISTEN TO THAT! RAAAAAGHHH!!!! The music isn't a massive part of the game, per se- but it doesn't have to be! The music, of course, adds a pleasant ambience as you play- but it's not in your face! It's a nice, calm, beautifully composed soundtrack, with a special, unique little tune for every minigame. While I have no musical bone in my body personally, I am something of a- how do you say eloquently- whore for a good soundtrack. I love music, I love creativity!! Hooray!!

I actually don't have much to say on the music, but know that I do love it! But, I really really really want to talk about the themes of Spiritfarer... like, really bad.

Okay, so... I'm actually going to get into personal territory here, and it's going to get a bit heavy. If you'd prefer to skip over that, then please, by all means, feel free to skip down until you see red text.

So, there's another reason this game is so dear to me. And that reason is the fact that Spiritfarer actually helps me to process my own grief. While it didn't come out until four years after the loss of my older brother... it helps. And if nine-year-old me had had Spiritfarer at that age, I feel like she would have been able to cope better. I was unlucky- my brother passed away at 1AM, while I was asleep. To this day, I regret not being able to say goodbye... but Spiritfarer illustrates this in a poignant way- sometimes, we won't be able to say goodbye, wether due to extraordinary circumstances or simply... not realising how little time you really have left with someone. This brings me to the spirit I actually look forward to the least- not for any fault of his character, but simply what he symbolises to me.

I find myself dreading meeting Stanley later on in the game. Stanley, the youngest spirit you can meet within the game, is a lovely little boy of eight, taking on the appearance of a little mushroom creature. Nothing is wrong with Stanley, but... it's important to remember that every spirit is... well, a spirit. Someone who's died. And given Stanley is only a small child, it hits that bit closer to home. He is younger than my brother was upon his death, but he was still a child. While it isn't specified what illness it was that Stanley died from, I still see a lot of my brother in him. Spiritfarer does help me and bring me comfort, but at the same time, I'm not sure I'm ready to meet a character so close to my own experiences. The fact Stanley always seems so chipper and smiley despite his difficulties... does not help. Bit too similar, you know?

My relationship with Stanley is an odd one. I don't dislike him- absolutely not, far from it- I dislike the fact his character, a little boy, has to exist. I dislike that children like him exist in real life, and the fact I've met so many of them. It's a hard truth to swallow, and not one I'm fully prepared to deal with.

OVERALL:

I think this game can be enjoyed by everyone, even if you've never experienced grief. It's a beautiful story, and its gorgeous visual charm and cozy mechanics have something for everyone. You can fish, mine, cook, craft, and basically everything in between! Also, there is a hug button. You can hug people. Game of the decade. I love hugs! It's so... god. I just... really like the hug button, man. Oh, and did I mention you can play co-op?! If you have a friend you'd like to play with, they can join the fun as Daffodil, Stella's beloved pet cat! Look at him, isn't he gorgeous!!

So, would I reccomend Spiritfarer? Short answer:

Yes.

Long answer: Yes, absolutely. It's an absolutely wonderful cozy game, with tons to do. There's no voice acting, but I don't think this game needs it- it tells an absolutely wonderful tale without it. Each character has a distinct personality and quirks- Summer is vegan and will adjust her diet as such, while Atul will quite literally eat anything you throw at him. Giovanni is brash, confident, and enjoys the finer things in life, whereas Astrid likes things plain and simple. And Daria? Daria just really likes fruit.

If you have an interest in Spiritfarer, I highly encourage you to check it out. It's available on a number of platforms (Playstation, Steam, even on mobile- although that's through Netflix, and also not very good. In my opinion, anyway.) I highly, highly, highly reccomend it to all cosy gams enjoyers, or even just people who like games in general. There's even little bits of platforming here and there, if you're into that! Do you yearn for the mines? How about becoming a woodcutter? Or maybe you just really like smelting. Well, excellent news- you can do all those things in Spiritfarer! The gameplay, music, visuals and most importantly of all, the story, make this game a highly worthwhile purchase in the long run. Chances are, if you like Stardew Valley, you'll like Spiritfarer.

Thunder Lotus Games has shattered my soul in ways I may never recover from- however, I am not upset about it. God, I bloody love Spiritfarer. This review took two and a half hours to type, I shit you not. God bless.

Minami: Good afternoon, all of you! Please treat me well today!

Hey Bojack... 

(Sorry If my english sucks, I'm a frenc frog soooooo...)

How can I express myself without doing too much? It’s really not easy. What can I say, if it’s only a big thank you, I’m talking to Bojack, but I’m also talking to all the creative teams behind who have done a crazy job. We spent time together, it’s funny to think that I know you, Bojack, but you don’t know us. The world is so beautiful and cruel at the same time. It is so difficult today to find its place. We’re looking for each other and somehow you helped me find me. I cried, I laughed with you. Thoughts so deep, sometimes stupid that you and your friends might have had, it’s funny because we have them all. Today I am studying in the audiovisual sector, to be behind the camera. You are totally involved. I’ve always loved to create, I draw, I sculpt, I make music and singing and when I saw you, I wanted to touch another, larger universe than cinema. I don’t care if I’m famous or not, I don’t care if I’m struggling my whole life maybe and not making a lot of money. The only thing I know for sure is that I want to be able to do what I love. Without realizing it, you were one of the most decisive years for my future. The loss of my father, those moments of loneliness that made me a lonely person, who was partying too much and getting lost. But I felt like I was finding you and your friends (well I don’t have your success and I didn’t create as many disasters as you) but my life almost became one. I loved you and I hated you. Maybe because you made me think too much about the worlds around me, has this feeling of loneliness but sometimes happiness. Waow. Just Waow. It’s a strange feeling though when a character behind a screen breaks a barrier in someone’s heart and becomes so real. You are not a horse with no name, you are Bojack Horseman. The person who managed to convince a horny young girl that yes in life must make sacrifices, that we go through periods where life is a hell but that deep down we must do what we love and not let the word happiness make us shit, only to find ourselves again, don’t lose sight of who you really are.

You’ve been afraid of failure your whole life, you’ve hurt a lot of people maybe but you’ve done me a lot of good and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I would also like to convey to all the teams behind you a lot of love and a deep respect for this colossal work. Maybe someday I’ll have a bojack to work with, a bojack to shine a thousand lights, like it makes you shine. Thank you for proving to the world that the art of animation, of cinema, of writing touches and will always touch the world.

Thank you again, Bojack. I love you very much.

I consider you a bit like the borderline dad that I may have had and that I miss. You comfort me and soothe me. Thank you.

Sherlock, Iris, and a lonely night.

Notes:  Pre-DGS but mentions of a certain character that constitute DGS2 spoilers.

My first thing that isn't RyuuAso, waow. This came out of nowhere, but I like how it turned out. Sherlock and Iris make my heart feel things too...

A plaintive wail cuts through the fog of sleep in his head, and Sherlock blearily lifts his face from his less than refined position facedown on the couch. The fireplace has burned to only dim embers, casting long shadows across the patterned walls, but it is enough for him to stumble the short distance towards the cradle that stands a few feet away.

Within the cradle, wrapped in a nest of soft blankets, a baby with wispy tufts of pink hair hiccups.

“What’s the matter?” Sherlock’s voice, raspy from sleep, surprises even himself, but he clears his throat and forces the edges of his lips to turn up. “Is the lady in need of a bottle? A change of clothing?” The questioning is more for his own benefit than anything, an aid in putting his thoughts in order. If he recalls correctly, Iris’s last feeding had been a few hours ago.

“Mikotoba,” he calls without thinking as he bends over the cradle to lift Iris carefully into his arms. “Can you get the bottle-…”

When Sherlock turns at the silence, the only response is the gentle crackling of the fireplace. He sucks in a deep, deep breath.

Ah. That’s right.

His trusted partner, forced to return to his country only a few short weeks ago, leaving with anguished apologies and surely another gaping hole in the form of a lost friend.

What was it he had said to Mikotoba, when they had said their farewells at the port?

No need to worry, Mikotoba! Iris and I will be just fine!

Iris interrupts his reverie with another sob, grabbing at his shirt. “Ahh, my apologies, Iris. Now, how about that bottle?”

He’s checked that the temperature is just right, yet Iris pushes it away after only a few swallows and begins to cry again, tossing restlessly in his arms. No matter how he offers her the bottle again, checks her undergarments, rocks her, tiny tears continue to pour from her eyes.

A faint ringing echoes in his ears.

“…Mikotoba,” he cannot help but murmur as he pats Iris’s back. “I find that I am vastly underqualified for the task you’ve given me.”

It was certainly not that he had lied when Mikotoba left. But a chill of doubt crawls down his spine the longer Iris cries, inconsolable. “Miss Iris,” Sherlock begins tiredly, and at a loss, he brushes a finger across her puffy cheek. “You’ll have to forgive your woefully incompetent caretaker.”

Perhaps it is only his imagination that Iris’s sobs seem to slow as he continues speaking. “If Mikotoba were here, I’m sure he’d know what to do right away. But you see, I am not nearly as competent in the ways of children, so I have no choice but to learn from you along the way.” Only an occasional sniffle escapes Iris now, as she blinks innocently up at him with brimming eyes. Spurred by her rapt attention, words spill from Sherlock’s lips, fast and frantic. “So please put up with me just a little longer, my little lady. After all, we only have each other.”

The moment he voices the fact, Sherlock falls silent with its crushing reality for the first time.

Mikotoba isn’t with him anymore.

If he were wearing his deerstalker, he would have been tempted to pull it down over his eyes. “…That’s right, we only have each other. It’s a little lonely, but we’ll manage, you and I.”

Iris coos, and a smile comes naturally to his face this time. “My apologies again, Miss Iris, you’re absolutely right. I have you, and you have me. How could we be lonely with each other?”

“Pa… Pa…”

Sherlock freezes.

"Pah!" Iris giggles, one tiny fist wrapped tightly around his finger and the other waving in the air. “Pa-pah!”

His head knows. That in the babbling development of their speech, children find the softer sounds easier to vocalize, and any resemblance to familial titles is always coincidence regardless of what well-meaning guardians may think.

His head knows very well.

But once, just this once—

He’ll listen to the insuppressible swell of joy in his heart instead.

wOOW look at this beaut-i’m at loss for words at her talent but she apparently seems to be a scandalous girl? issues with texting bUT YA KNOW WHAT?? i like this girl cause she gives me the vibe she likes to be who she is and don’t give a f*ck. i think she’s pretty badass and gives me the vibe that she’s just not like your ordinary idol. she’s an all-rounder, i’ve grown fond of elly! her rapping flow entices me, she spits dragon fire when she raps. ooo~~

jegal seoyoung - trainee for eight months

she has these cute cheeks and this girl has a lot of cuteness to her.. she seems like she could go on variety but there should be more to her personality than just looking.. cute? i think she gives me that natural kind-of vibe you wouldn’t find elsewhere, like she’s a down-to-earth girl and not just trying to show off. she’s who she is and she does her best at being naturally cute but would i say she’s more of a vocalist or dancer? she’s a decent dancer but not like jazz (HOT MAMA CAN WORK THOSE HIPS, THEY dON’T LIE LIKE SHAKIRA OH MA LORDE!!) i mean.. jazz dances really well cause ya’know, jazz! but her voice doesn’t captivate me like jihyun or dawon would.

jo eunae (bekah) - trainee for nine months

ooo this girl is different!! she’s a cali girl and that’s cool, you stay cool like the cool weather in cali! she seems to be a strong candidate. man i think jisub’s bringing these girls down with their confidence but i like how strong and fierce eunae is. i’m curious what else what she can bring in the potluck! too many girls in this show are so quiet that i’m starting to fall asleep in my tomb.. liek the time my ancestors were nagging to me about how i don’t clean the pagoda and stuff. need more girls that are lively like eunae, yeah!! btw you rock that eyeliner girl #slay

jung soojung - trainee for one year

i think she’s the youngest but she seems to have the most mature vibe from the girls, she’s pretty bland and boring though. i think she was a lot better on the mgas than now, seems like she’s just pulling through. she’s got a great voice, not going to lie and she can dance just fine but there’s something off about her. the ice princess isn’t doing so well.. so far. she shone brighter a year ago but it seems like these girls are have the extreme limelight than she is hMMM WORK ON YA VIBE GIRL, YOU NEED TO SING MORE THAN JUST BALLADS! ffs

kim seolhyun - trainee for one year

she’s.. on this show oh waOW WHAT A HOT MAMA! i think she was on a dating scandal with somebody named.. bacon? oh yeah i remember bacon, that old greasy bacon be doin’ something with this rare beauty named seolhyun. she’s really different from the other girls, she’s really good at what she does and is versatile but there’s something i was expecting more from miss seolhyun. i can’t say i’m too impressed but i’m not disappointed either. i think i have to see more from her, she has almost the same vibes from the mgas and bIGGG DADDDY NEEDS MORE FROM YA LIKE.. werk that body girl. seolhyun works out yee, you can tell. she’s got the bod, the face, and the visuals. hot damn

kim yubin - trainee for three years

she’s another rapper.. what happened to the other rappers? i feel like there should’ve been more rappers but there’s only like 2.. or 3? THERE’S SO MANY VOCALIST IN THIS SHOW AND they’re mostly quiet personalities hOLY HELL?? i heard she’s been in many scandals.. damn these rappers don’t joke mang. they’re pretty headass, so cool!! suspicious and scandalous just makes everything interesting. she has the personality of queen b, but i think i’ve expected more from yubin than you know.. what she does cause she is a triple threat for a reason. at least, from what i’ve heard? am i missing out on something? ALSO I’M DIGGING THAT TAN GIRL YOU GOOO!!

lee jieun (jazz) - trainee for two years, four months 

SNDFOISNFOISDNF!@#$%#^% SO JISUB YOU COW HOW DID THE BEST DANCER OF THE SHOW GET ELIMINATED? she’s one of royal’s gemstones!! are you flippin’ serious you whoohaA? i’m so mad!! this girl doesn’t deserve to be treated like this. seriously, she was complimented so much and only to be eliminated and walk away? i’M CRYING ON MY TOMBSTONE, i can’t take this no not my heart.. JAZZ WHY?! 

lee jihyun - trainee for three years

wow.. jisub are you saying jihyun is predictable? okay um.. hold on, give her voice some praise more than you’re putting her down. she’s been loyal to royal and you’re just going to treat her out like that? come on man.. you’re not fair towards these girls at all. you sleep on some of these girls and you neeDA STOP THAT. istg mnet’s new cow is you!! jihyun has amazing technique and beautiful vocal prowess. it looks like if she was to ever debut, she’d be the leader despite how you say she’s predictable with her performances. okay, for three years you’ve had her, why don’t you cherish her more? >> 

lee soohyun - trainee for two years 

she’s definitely cute but her looks apparently don’t match your regular idol type.. i think that’s the sweetest thing about her, she’s unique and not just some plastic surgery butchered-beauty. i’m glad she’s the way she is, she’s a sweethEART AHH YOU REMIND ME OF MULAN WHEN SHE WAS A LITTLE GIRL!! my heart is melted she’s too sweet *sniffle sniffle* her voice sounds lovely too!

manoban lalisa (lisa) - trainee for eight months

jisub says that this girl doesn’t have all-rounded abilities and that she doesn’t do what she does precisely.. well he’s wrong, i think she’s one of the most hard-working girls out there and she deserves more credit than what gee-sub gives her. lisa, you deserve to shine bright for who and what you are!! keep up that charisma girl, you’re more than just a pretty face as he says! if she was put in a girl group, she’d have the greatest variety personality.. like she just appeals the audience so much.

nam dawon - trainee for one year

oo.. another quiet girl? she seems really quiet but like.. she’s just there? i wish i got to see more of her. not gonna lie but she has a pretty voice but like soojung, she just seems too quiet beyond belief. she’s shy and there’s nothing wrong with that bUT I WISH THESE VOCALISTS were a little more out there!! like.. she’s a sweetheart but we need spicy fire on the show. i love her technique, she seems like a very strong singer.

park chaeyoung - trainee for eight months

i’d have to say that rose is like a rose, beautiful and one of my favourite flowers! i remember the days scrollin’ through her instagram and twitter (okay i’m kind of a stalker) AND SHE HAD THIS BEAUTIFUL ORANGE HAIR THAT WAS LIKE A FIREY BREATHING DRAGON! rose has earned her place as one of my favourites. i can’t wait for her to play the guitar and sing! her voice is unique and what’s even more awesome is she’s from australia! ooo dat accent got me like #waowgirl

yang jiwon - trainee for three years

she’s been training for so long and hasn’t debuted yet? was she in trc’s dungeon for the longest time ever? i’m not going to label these girls as “backstabbers” but some of them have been training so long with high hopes and dreams, only to be let-down by their company. yo this girl is one of the hottest, along with seolhyun. she might not be the best vocalist, but i can’t put ma finger on it, she’s has something special about her! we’ll just have to see it!
