18 and 19 for the dragon age thing? ^^
Thanks Alexander!! :D
18) Which aspect of the fandom are you most looking forward to? (e.g. reading/writing fic, the bounty of gorgeous art, getting to know new people, etc.)
The main fandom-related thing I'm looking forward to is talking to @aylaaescar about the game and them and I sending each other a million screenshots and random facts about our ocs, probably
I'm also really excited about reading meta about the various new companions and seeing the theories that people come up with once the game is out. I'm also looking forward to seeing what @fiendpact has to say! 😁
19) Are you planning to replay previous games, watch Dragon Age: Absolution, or read any of the books/comics/short stories, or are there other games you want to play in the meantime?
I'm currently replaying Origins and I think I'm gonna at least try to play through my main worldstates first, just as a refresher on what's been going on (here's what you missed on Dragon Age) and I think I'm gonna read at least some of the stories in Tevinter Nights first. I might watch Absolution once I'm done with Edgerunners (which I should really get back to because I've only watched one episode). I'd kind of already shifted back into DA mode by replaying DA2 before the announcement, but I do that a few times a year anyway simply because I love all of the non-cop companions in that game

DA Questions

01) Favourite game of the series?
Inquisition. It holds a very special place in my heart no thanks to Kaaras, and him being my first experience with the Dragon Age series <3 It’s just got all the right elements for me.
02) How did you discover Dragon Age?
Actually, and old friend from when I was in my previous fandom said I’d like it because I loved Mass Effect. No regrets ever since, and I knew I needed this game as soon as I saw that Bull romance scene >.>
03) How many times you’ve played the games?
I’ve finished Origins once, DA2 I’ve done twice, and DA:I I’ve done... a lot >.> I keep making new characters, but I always go back to Kaaras because he’s my baby and I love him.
04) Favourite race to play as?
Qunari! <3 They are unique and BIG. Anything with horns is an instant heck yes for me!
05) Favorited class?
Mage.
06) Do you play through the games differently or do you make the same decisions each time?
That entirely depends on the character I’m playing. I have a fair few other characters in DA:I who are each their own, and I replayed DA 2 because I wanted to get a better feel of my Hawke, who turned out SO different to my first playthrough. If I replay Origins, I will most likely play as a new character as well, who will have their own choices. The only way I’m making the same choices would entirely depend on what kind of character I’m playing.
07) Go-to adventuring group?
I will ALWAYS take my LI in the party, unless it’s Fenris and a mission he will disapprove on, hahaha. DA:O was Zevran, Wynne and a mix on the third character. DA2 is generally Fenris, Varric (always), and Sebastian or Aveline. I always bring the companion quest member to their quest. DA:I depends on the character I am playing because they all have their favourites. Kaaras takes Bull always, Dorian, Varric and Cass. Basically he never takes Blackwall, Sera and rarely Solas.
08) Which of your characters did you put the most thought into?
I’ll be honest, none, LOL. Overall, I’d say Kaaras, because he’s my favourite and my biggest, but when I MADE him... I put literally 0 thought into him at all. He just grew and grew on me, and here we are.
09) Favourite romance?
Iron Bull, Josephine, Cassandra, Fenris, Zevran, Alistair, Dorian. I’ve yet to SEE some of them, like Leliana and Morrigan, which I would like to eventually. Oh... and Harding IF you could actually romance her.
10) Have you read any of the comics/books?
I’ve only read some of Asunder, but I have some of the comics as well, I just need to actually read them.
11) If you read them, which was your favourite book?
I’ve only read half of Asunder, and it kind of bored me...
12) Favourite DLCs?
Tresspasser, it’s just got this... weird atmosphere to it that really pulls me in, but also makes me sad... I dunno. I also love Jaws of Hakkon.
13) Things that annoy you.
Look, I love Dragon Age, and the slight annoyances aren’t going to ruin the experience for me. I love the games, I love everything. I’m not going to say shit about it, lol. If you’ve got something specific to ask, then ask me.
14) Orlais or Ferelden?
Ferelden.
15) Templars or mages?
Mages.
16) If you have multiple characters, are they in different/parallel universes or in the same one?
They are all in the same story line. My Hero, my Hawke, and Kaaras are all in the same canon universe. All of the other muses I’ve made are all COMPANION muses, who also belong in the same universe. Not gunna lie, the thought of making a different Hawke, different Hero or different Inquisitor honestly feels like a betrayal to my own characters, so I will never make a different one. They will all belong in the one story line and that’s that. It’s like my big whole canon story to me.
17) What did you name your pets? (mabari, summoned animals, mounts, etc)
I think I named him Woof in Origins and Dog in DA 2. Can’t remember tho, lol.
18) Have you installed any mods?
I started off playing DA:I and DA 2 on Xbox, so at the start, nothing was modded. When I got DA:I on PC, I installed mods, but Kaaras is still very vanilla, most of the mods I use are merely armour replaces, environmental mods and ones to make blood stay off clothes, etc. Maybe a hair mod here, but that’s about it when it comes to their looks.
19) Did your Warden want to become a Grey Warden?
At the start, not really. She just wanted to survive, lol. So... she did what she had to.
20) Hawke’s personality?
My Hawke is very stern. He is a mix of blue and red mostly.
21) Did you make matching armour for your companions in Inquisition?
No, lol. XD
22) If your character(s) could go back in time to change one thing, what would they change?
My Hero and Kaaras know that they can’t change the past, even if they wish to. They’ve accepted that life has to move forward. My Hawke? He suffered the most, and he has many regrets, most of those are for the loss of his mother, what happened in Kirkwall he blames himself for, and Anders, and he wishes he could turn it all back.
23) Do you have any headcanons about your character(s) that go against canon?
No, I’m pretty strict on when it comes to canon. The only thing is the qunari background in DA:I isn’t Kaaras’ background. I’ve tweaked that so it gits his true background better.
24) Who did you leave in the Fade?
Stroud.
25) Favourite mount?
Harts, they’re so damn majestic!

Reading
Although I’m a fast reader, that does not mean that I will not make a mistake, especially with reading in another language and in a timed class setting. Looking at our class activity 3, I almost got two questions wrong because I read the passage once and wrote down my answers quickly. The second read over saved me from writing the wrong answers. Although I may be feeling rushed, I should take my time to read and make sure I comprehend everything before moving on. That’s what I’ve been doing with song lyrics since those have a more conversation tone that makes it easier to read. “Ai Se Eu Te Pego” was very popular when I was younger, and it was really cool understanding the lyrics!! Looking at class activities, in class activity 5, I understood the reading but as I will discuss in the writing section, I kept making mistakes with grammar and spelling. Class activity 6 was really hard because I knew what I was trying to say but I could not write it down correctly. I forgot the correct word for “rain”, and I remember feeling so upset because I had realized after turning in my paper. That was one of my worst assignments, but I can only get better with practice, therefore I went back to the book and looked at the rules/context these affirmative/negative words were used in. I also asked my professor to go over these questions when we were quizzed on the grammar later on. Class activity 7 went relatively well because I understood the story, but my summary had a lot of errors, such as using “cambiar” instead of using “mudar”, a stronger word. Trying to find verbs within the text was hard as I tried to distinguish which were subjunctive preterit imperfect. Generally, I feel that I’m still strong as a reader but can continue to improve through practice. I can correctly express my comprehension and reading skills, but I must make sure my other skills are on the same level or else it will be really hard to move forward.
Writing
This was by far the hardest parts of the class this semester. Prior to this class, I took Portuguese online as a B session which is basically half of a regular school semester. It was a hard course and I had a lot of questions I did not realize I had once I began to take this class in person. I did some writing assignments in my previous course but if I were to show those assignments, native’ speakers or educators can tell there was a lot of “I am” or other variation of a simple sentence. Looking at our first assignment, the disconnect was there as I started learning which were the appropriate accents needed. An example I brought up was the use of a ‘é’ to mean ‘is’ instead of ‘and’. One trick I used to remember this difference in writing was to think of the accent in the ‘é’ as a hat that both é and the word ‘is’ have (I hope that made sense, it is just the way that helped me remember). I believed that ‘o’ could be used for the word ‘or’ but in reality, it is ‘ou’ that we would use in Portuguese. Looking at all my assignments, I see that I struggle a lot with accents, whether it is figuring out if they are in a word, which accent mark to use, or which letter they belong too. I also noticed that I do not make my words plural, for example, “meu amigos…. simpatico” instead of “MEUS amigos… SIMPATICOS. I use grammar in the wrong order too as seen in my writing assignment 3. In a way, I wish this was my first Portuguese class because the grammar aspect was so difficult for me to understand and put them in the correct structure. The YouTube series ‘Classes de Portugués’ is without a doubt going to be a resource I will continue to use as I keep up my studies in the language.
Listening
Arriving into the in-person class, a lot of students spoke so well and fast. I only spoke to my online professor once a week with other students, so my Portuguese was not as strong. I did not let this discourage me, thus I tried to make a point of taking my time when reading the class book to listen to the dialogue sections of the text. The first couple of weeks hearing the professor speak was hard because although I would pay attention, there were occasions she would say something that my brain could not process as at the same speed. Class activity 4 was a great activity because each person spoke Portuguese differently which gave us more of a challenge. I liked it but I did not do as well because my writing was not the best for my answers. In our class activity 9, I did well on it because there was an option to playing the video multiple times and subtitles that helped me make sure I could understand what was being spoken. The only part I did not like about that assignment was that it would cut out in sections of the video that I had to keep replaying just to make sure I was not missing dialogue. Listening is a skill I would rank as second best for me because while fast speakers may confuse me, I can adapt as I listen to more shows, podcasts, or music spoken in Portuguese. I love to dance and one of the coolest parts recently was understanding a tutorial on a K-pop choreography I found in Portuguese! One show I thought was funny although it is up to the viewers discretion is Super Drags on Netflix. The characters do not speak too fast and I’m finding it easy to follow along with the story.
Speaking
I tried my best throughout the course to speak Portuguese with my classmates and with the professor. Having the in-person class allowed me to really practice, no matter how shy I was. I tend to speak quieter which would not be helpful as a speaker or listener so confidence in my own abilities is a skill on its own that I need to gain. One of my setbacks is that it takes me a long time to really think about how to say what I need to because I want to go back to that “I am” structure in Portuguese. All the activities were very helpful to me, from the flip grid videos we were forced to switch to because of the Coronavirus to the Bate-Papo opportunities. It was nice to get to work with others to figure out how to say something. In class, my classmates would help me pronounce words that I hadn’t realized I was saying wrong such as “café da manha”, “tenho”, “dirigir”, não etc. I always sat with my two classmates, Chang and Wenyi, and they completely elevated my skills in all four aspects mentioned here. Although I would greatly confuse them, they kept encouraging me to speak Portuguese and it was super nice to have a support system in class where I did not feel alone in my challenges. I know that another one of my challenges with speaking is that I tend to say ‘um’ a lot. I hope that I can try to lessen this as I practice with some of my new friends! I set up a Duolingo account as well to focus on retain what I learned in class!
Conclusion
Personally, I believed I learned so much with every activity; they constantly tested my skills and challenged me to learn from my mistakes. There is always room to learn more, I wish I could have learned to speak Portuguese even better but that is not a skill gained overnight. I plan to continue to work hard towards improving my skills. There are no easy parts to this course because it’s all about challenging oneself to learn a new language. I know that when I would wake up to go to class, a small part of me dreaded going to class because I did not want to say something wrong but the bigger part of me was excited to start the day off with a challenge. Not all the assignments were extremely hard but that really depends on people’s perspectives. I think the best part of the class was playing games where we would speak with others, work as a group to solve activities at different tables, and especially spelling what the profession was. There is so much I can continue to work on and I’m glad the internet is as big as it is that I can find any resource to answer my questions.
