No more remakes
I despise remake culture: unless you're porting an old work that's relevant but has issues to the modern day, or the story is always being reinvented, it doesn't need a remake.
Camp A is works like lovecraft, dumbo and Peter pan.
Camp B is works like cinderella, Alice in wonderland and Robin hood.
If a work has a very niche story, not "just princess in the wood. Just a moster destroying a city" it won't be viable for remaking, I.e. matrix shouldn't be remade because it's so tied up in the cultural zeitgeist of the time.
Remastering is a different beast. Whilst it can still be a shallow cash grab, some pieces of art become almost inaccessible after time, mainly video games, but I'd also class older literature like Shakespeare, beowolf and Dante. The work has to be remastered to fit a modern audience.
Anyway we didn't need a HTTYD remake; it's to recent so the technology and dialogue doesn't make it unwatchable, the story is too specific to have anything worthwhile adding, and the original work doesn't have any glaring holes that need patching.
The only modern work I want a remake of is BBCs Merlin and that is purely because I class the missed gay romances as a glaring hole in the plot that should be fixed at all costs.
#remake: creating a work based on a previous IP without changing much bar a few additions or retractions#remaster: significantly changing an IP to make it palatable to a modern audience whilst trying to retain as much of the original's “spirit”#yes I know that isnt really want those terms mean cinema-anarchy#remakes#remasters#maleficent isnt a remake @ me#wanting a merlin remake is hypocritical but i embrace the reflexive turn#bbc merlin#httyd#httyd remake
