#wanted to be present for NJs comeback

ARMYs are really just burnt out and I don’t think the rapid fire pace of releases has helped anything. It’s amazing as a fan to get all this music, but the expectation to chart everything I think is unrealistic and kind of overwhelming. People just don’t have that kind of time, energy, or money to go all out for every comeback when they happen every other month, sometimes several in a single month. It especially doesn’t help if ARMYs aren’t feeling the song, and I don’t think they’ve felt quite a bit of CH2 music.

I have longer thoughts on all this, but I just have so much annoyance towards some chart ARMYs and their unrealistic expectations and their refusal to acknowledge that the current organized fandom streaming power isn’t what they think it is. Another big wave of HL victimization (but sometimes TH is also included??) from ARMYs and it just opened the doors for so much resentment and hatred to be thrown towards jkk but especially Jimin. It was really disturbing to go and block these people & find I had 5-10+ moots following each time. It’s really out of control.

I’m just tired of this RL discourse while they ignore the twenty elephants in the room that explain why the streams are where they are (and no it’s not because “ARMYS hate RL”.). Instead they just throw these tantrums that further divide an already deteriorating and toxic fandom. I don’t know what it will take for them to understand that a fandom that doubled with Dynamite is going to prefer pop music, and that the majority of ARMYs are in fact not zombie streamers but fans who casually listen to the music that appeals to them. Not to mention the fact that a lot of ARMYs aren’t even active right now, so many of them have been dropping off and waiting for BTS to return as a group.

It really just keeps getting worse and worse in ARMY spaces. I’m pretty sure active ARMYs are about 90% diet solos at this point. It’s extremely messed up what a lot of them can get away with saying and not get canceled or called out for. It’s also just this hyper-fixation on drama, shooter accounts, NewJean’s, MHJ, raging against whatever fandom approved villain of the month, trending pointless hashtags for random reasons, and then being shady and resentful because of these arbitrary goals they set that are often influenced by using Jimin as a goalpost.

Your boyfriend wasn't home a lot lately. Comeback was in full motion and he did not have a lot of time to visit you.

But you understood like you always did, even if you were becoming lonelier each day.

You were in a relationship, but you haven't seen your boyfriend in more than five weeks, despite him living in the same city as you did.

You called each other sometimes when he had the time, when you were lucky you got a face time call, but they were becoming scarce.

However today as you were walking up to your apartment door, you found a bouquet of flowers lying in front of it.

You looked around and tried to see if anyone was here, but when there wasn't, you quickly picked it up and read the card that was clipped to it.

And as you cried while reading the card you realized that you could never be angry at him, because in the end he didn't want this either. He missed you just as much as you missed him and he was probably just as lonely as you were.

Yes, the kind of bracelets that you make for yourself and your friends as kids, but he had made two, one for you to wear and the other for him to wear. They looked like children’s jewelry but you still loved it.

“I made it when I was on tour,” he showed it to you with a small smile, “You can wear one and I'll wear the other one!”

And these type of gifts were so much better than anything he could have bought.

So as he put it on and as your eyes were already watering, you said: “Kim Taehyung.. you are becoming really soft, you know that?”

“Only for you.”

The kiss was a mixture of laughing and crying, but you loved it that he put time and effort into making something like this for you.

JUNE 2019 DIMENSIONS ENTERTAINMENT SCHEDULES & REVIEW

Members may earn 3 points each (up to 6 points) for writing, by the end of June 30 KST:

A solo para of 400+ words based on their monthly schedule (does not count toward your monthly total).

A thread of six posts (three per participant, including the starter) based on their monthly schedule.

Overall Company

The company summer package DVD and photobook releases this month, so each artist will film a short video encouraging fans to buy the product at some point in the month. Following the Hawaii retreat, there’s talk around the company about their CEO’s absence, though he hasn’t been seen around the headquarters of the company often lately anyway.

She begins her North American tour at the end of the month, though Dimensions doesn’t currently plan on a big push in the market like they do for Unity and Alien, so she isn’t really doing much press while she’s there. Nevertheless, she has a devoted niche fan base in the states to warmly welcome her for her concerts.

He continues his music show promotions for his latest album after returning for the retreat and does his rounds of fan signs, including three outside of Seoul. Dimensions is paying extra attention to physical sales and buzz in online communities this comeback to gauge what venue to book for his first solo concert.

Gal.actic

Upper management has been giving their all to book Gal.actic CFs to get more positive associations with their names after their last comeback debacle. It hasn’t been easy since a search of Gal.actic’s name still brings up more news of the injunction than anything else, but they’ve managed to land a CF deal with a mobile RPG Immortal Warrior conveniently catering to a male audience by giving each member a scene of their own asking, “Oppa, what do you want to do?”. Word is that they’ll also begin filming a reality show following their comeback, so the girls are asked to prepare a pitch for a reality show concept to present to their management that will be filmed and included in the reality show. The actual concept has already been decided, so the filming is entirely for the entertainment value.

June 20: Immortal Warrior CF filming.

June 29: Reality show concept pitch filming.

Alien

Alien have booked another brand deal, this time with sportswear brand Kappa Korea, which they’re scheduled to film CFs for the brand after returning from a performance in Norway. Each member will get their own highlighted CF, and the group will also shoot a photo shoot for one of the brand’s F/W collections later in the month. This is all in between studio recordings for their next comeback and continued English lessons for their American activities while Dimensions shops around for an American label to sign a contract with, signalling that expansion into the Western market remains in the plans for Alien.

Important dates:

June 11: Performance at Voyage to K-Pop concert in Oslo, Norway.

June 15: Kappa summer CF filming.

June 27: Kappa F/W photo shoot.

MARS

Their Youtube cover project is put on pause this month so that they can focus completely on their comeback and build anticipation from anyone who’s been checking out their covers. They film the single MV mid-month, and then film a CF for California Beach, a water park in Gwangju, later in the month. It’s their first CF in a while since their frequently darker and theatrical image doesn’t make them the most in-demand group on the CF market.

Important dates:

June 14: Callin’ M/V filming.

June 20: California Beach CF filming.

7ROPHY

The track list and concepts for their next comeback are finished, so they’ll be in the studio recording this entire month. They’ve also booked a photo shoot with 1st Look magazine thanks to their recent increase in popularity, though the members don’t have much experience with magazine photoshoots despite their four years in the business. At the end of the month, they’re being named City Ambassadors for Seoul Metropolitan City, which will come with promotional duties for the city, and will attend an ambassador inauguration ceremony at the end of the month. It seems like Dimensions finally cares about them enough again to seek out publicity opportunities, but the 7ROPHY members should know better than anyone how fleeting management’s favor can be.

The members get another short break in Seoul, which will involve a lot of recording for their comeback album, including learning the title track choreography, they’ll take off to return to the states and start their North American tour, which they’ll finish off next month. In addition to Good Morning America and Strahan and Sara appearances, where they’ll do their first performance of their yet to be released comeback track, the members will be doing a lot of miscellaneous radio and online promotion targeted at the American audience with the help of the marketing department of the American label Dimensions has signed a distribution deal with.

Lucid

They’re not in the country when their comeback drops, but as soon as they’re back on Korean soil, a successful round of promotions is the number one priority, and that’s exactly what they’ll achieve. Their song will tie 7ROPHY’s latest comeback as the highest peaking digital performance of any of Dimensions’ girl group songs in recent memory. They can’t quite match 7ROPHY’s recent physical performance even after fan signs all around Korea due to losing some of their fan base with the concept change, but management remains hopeful due to increased popularity in online male communities. This comeback cements Lucid as a rising group to talk about and will bring in more new fans than any of their previous releases. As is common for rising rookies, they’re also scheduled to film a somewhat awkwardly cute video, “Tap Water Song”, celebrating the merits of tap water for an SBS campaign. It’ll be good for Dimensions’ connections, if nothing else.

Thoughts on the time travel / parallel universe aspect of the Bangtan Universe

I have been kinda unwilling to get into theorising about if or how Seokjin is perhaps traveling in time, etc. in the BU. And it still stands I am mainly interested in Jimin's storyline as I feel it often gets kinda shoved aside (or as of late misunderstood) in fandom talk. But with those little excerpts of HYYH notes being tweeted out by the Smeraldo Books account, the conversation is picking up again. I think the overall assumption is that the upcoming comeback will once again be tied to the BU/HYYH storyline, perhaps once and for all to bring it to an end with the long-awaited fifth and final instalment of the Reflection of Youth series.

Maybe. Who knows really.

Still, it was enough for me to dig up my own notes and consider what I think we can know about the SJ situation thus far. I was inspired enough to want to type it out and if it's something that someone else will enjoy reading, all the better. Keep in mind this is not a working theory, it's just a collection of observations. Also, due to the amount of material to cover as well as the different translations going around, it's very much possible I have misunderstood something. If you notice mistakes please do let me know, 'kay?

First of all I need to make clear I don't have an opinion about if we are talking about time travel or parallel universes here. On twitter I have seen some pretty interesting math based explanations or conceptualisations of how time could loop back and simultaneously be both a past and a deviation of it as well. Not my expertise and I don't have anything to contribute on the subject. I just wanted to bring it up in case my language in trying to describe the deviations that can be seen in the storyline is all over the place. It is because I myself are unclear how I should be thinking about it. I don't know if it's time travel or a parallel universe. Or something else or nothing at all.

Either way, as I see it, based on the material that has been released thus far, the splinter point where the boys' storyline starts going on parallel tracks (either two or even multiple) is April 11 year 22. SJ dreams of something that has not happened yet, something he knows the date of already: TH will jump off the observatory platform on the 22th of May. Between those two dates I can see multiple instances where the boys seemingly live through different versions realities.  Some of it is more explicit than others but I will list them all chronologically.

The first one is vague, not really canon but I thought to mention it anyway. On that same day the 11th, Jungkook contemplates about jumping off a construction site. Ultimately Yoongi calling him on his phone jolts him out of his thoughts. The only reason why I think there is a potential parallel version to this is that we saw in the Euphoria SF making-of video that the crew filmed a scene where JK does jump off. Whether or not there is a dimension where YG doesn't call and JK jumps, remains to be seen.

SJ isn't the only one who dreams about the future. On April 28th Taehyung tells Namjoon about his dreams of things to come, one being YG dying in a fire. This is perhaps to date the strongest example of alternative versions of events taking place with corroborating material to be found in both film and text.

In one of the versions, the one TH dreamed, YG dies in a fire. We already saw how it happens based on the INU MV. In JK's note of May 2nd he describes a fever dream about saving YG but ultimately it's just a dream. In yet another telling of events, one somehow tampered with by SJ, JK seemingly does save the man. YG describes how he can can see and hear JK in the burning room before he loses consciousness.

SJ looks pleased with his handiwork. In a freshly released note of his own, dated the same day, SJ ponders whether he'll be able to fix errors and save the others.

The next examples have to do with Jimin, Hoseok and tangentially TH too. Jimin's storyline has been my focus all along so I should feel the most confident talking about it. Yet I grapple with the details still. I have been pretty adamant that there is no reason to believe JM is hallucinating his friends in the hospital. At the same time I do feel like something is amiss with the whole thing. Ever since the Answer album notes were released I have been privately wondering whether they have just gone and changed HS's storyline at some point during the LY era since the pieces didn't really fit well together anymore. But now I have started to consider that perhaps the pieces don't fit because they're from different parallels.

In the early BU material it is implied that HS suffers from narcolepsy. He is seen collapsing in the INU MV as well as sleeping in the Prologue SF. Later in the MAMA SF his diagnosis is widened to include Munchausen syndrome. In the notes HS says he takes pills he doesn't need and collapses everywhere.

All of this I think is implied to be the result of his childhood trauma of being abandoned by his mother. In fact the earliest note in the series describes HS collapsing at school over the memory. When the Euphoria SF was released there was a lot of discussion about the scene at the hospital where JM is seen holding HS back. I always took it to show JM saving HS from falling. Quite a few others tied it back to those early examples of narcolepsy.

This was more or less confirmed with the release of the Euphoria SF making-of video. JM quite clearly says he saves HS from falling due to him falling sleep. Yet, later on in the HYYH notes dated 12th May, we are suddenly presented a version where HS is falling due to simply running and slipping on the stairs.

These two parallel events paint a picture of quite different realities. In the notes version with the simple slip of footing, HS is actually unaware that JM has been staying in the hospital all these years. However in the video version they are both dressed in hospital garb, implying that HS is staying there in (long-term?) care as well. Most importantly, in the scenario where HS is a patient for his on-going psychiatric symptoms, he would be in no shape to help Jimin escape, like he seemingly does according to the notes.

This explanation of parallel storylines would somewhat explain why JM goes back and forth being alone and being with his friends at the hospital. Maybe. "Reality" is hard to define in this part of the storyline.

HS's possible long-term care in the hospital could also affect TH's situation. If HS was staying in the hospital, he wouldn't be available to collect TH from the police on the 20th, nor to escort him back home. In the notes it is in no way explicitly stated that HS's presence stopped TH from killing his father but we do know that in the version of reality where he did, HS was not present.

Next we have the event that SJ already dreamed of happening over a month ago; TH jumping off the observatory platform. As we all know, there is also an alternative version where SJ is the one to climb up and apparently jump instead. TH looks up at him with an expression "filled with doubts," says JM in the making-of video.

By now it is abundantly clear that this is a significant point in the storyline and in no way a coincidence. SJ "knows" TH will jump. We the audience "know" that he has already jumped. Yet SJ takes his place and seems content with his decision.

The end of the story as we know it seems to be August 30th in the year 22. The timeline of events is very vague still, having to do with Smeraldo flowers, the diary, a car accident, a wish to change things and a realisation that it's impossible. I can't be sure right now but it seems to me like there are two different ending points, one where the girl dies and the other where she doesn't and SJ just returns her the diary.

How it ties back to the other boys remains to be seen.

I'll give an honourable mention to poor NJ. I have already talked about how I struggle to pin his storyline down and this occasion is no different. Looking at my notes no alternative versions of reality really stand out for him. It's obvious that seeing SJ at the gas station the same day as he had his dream about the future is an important turning point even if we don't really know why yet. There is a version where SJ does not appear to pick up the bills tossed to the ground.

Maybe it’s a parallel timeline or maybe it's nothing. Impossible to say.

Last thing to mention. Many of the events covered are introduced as flashbacks in the beginning of the Euphoria SF, before SJ gets out of bed, places flower petals on the floor and changes things (for the first time?). Might mean something.

Such quick growth in such a short time period appears to be catching up to Gold Star now. There’s been avoidable problems with management recently, most noticeable in their handling of Origin’s and Fuse’s next comebacks, and even the constant delay of a comeback for Gold Star Soloist 1. Gold Star may have an attractive reputation of caring more for their artists than Dimensions or BC, but their behind the scenes employees are clearly being overworked due to executives’ reluctance to expand teams as needed and incur costs that could lower their lead in industry profits. Messy management decisions haven’t affected everyone yet, but word is starting to get around within the company to watch out for delayed comebacks and poorly-handled scheduling.

Meetings with management, marketing, and A&R continue to be her primary schedule, but she’ll be called into one in particular early in the month after returning with representatives from all three departments to discuss her career direction and where she sees herself going musically as she enters her twelfth year. The members will begin learning the title track choreography in addition to choreography for b-sides “Like U” and “Rewind” after their Seoul concerts are out of the way.

Similarly, they’ll be filming a lot of online promo while in America, including a friendship test, trying nine things they’ve never done before, a boy band lyric challenge, song association, and a "most likely to”. After returning to Seoul mid-month the members will begin learning the choreography for their Japanese comeback and will also film the music video.

The concept of their comeback still seems questionable for late fall and the first fittings of the intended outfits for promotions present a mix of summery dresses and crop top styling for the music video as well as a selection of intended stage outfits that don’t seem to know whether they’re going for the summery feel of the music video outfits or something more appropriate for the fall season they’ll be promoting in. Overall, management feels messy this comeback, but that hasn’t stopped the company from letting the members know in their own way that now that they’ll no longer be competing with Origin during promotions as initially anticipated and Femme Fatale’s smash summer comeback has vacated the very top spots of the charts, they’re expected to make this comeback a hit for its more public friendly sound. Regardless of how messy management seems to be for them this time around, Gold Star has chosen to accept an offer for Fuse to serve as tourism ambassadors between Switzerland and South Korea. Their duties haven’t begun in earnest yet, but they will attend a formal ceremony to be appointed to the position, an event that’s more for mediaplay than out of true necessity.

There’s no word on Gold Star contacting composers for new songs for them either, but when even management for Origin and Fuse has been messy lately, it’s only to be expected Element will suffer too. They’re scheduled to continue touring overseas in November and December, but this month, they don’t even have that to look forward to. Instead, their personal team is still brainstorming ways to expand their fandom and have decided to give them a test run of their own YouTube series on the company channel to “show their hidden charm points”. Before bringing managerial structure into it, they’ve tasked all of the members to shoot their own vlog in a category of their choice (e.g. mukbang, gaming, Q&A, challenge, daily vlog). They should film one by themselves and one with at least one other member. Ultimately, only the vlogs deemed interesting enough will be posted to test the waters of fan interest in more Youtube content in the form of a series. Outside of their own content creation, they’ve been booked on RUN.wav, where they’ll give a performance of “Bomb Bomb” and showcase covers of “24K Magic” and “Side to Side” they’ve previously performed on tour. During the interview portion, they’ll talk about how their predebut project prepared them for debut, the challenges of being a co-ed group personally and musically, and their touring experience.

Femme Fatale’s Japanese tour continues throughout the month with dates in Fukuoka and Chiba (please see August’s schedule for their assigned solo stages), leaving them only their first ever dome concert in December to finish their Japanese tour. They have their first ever concerts in Seoul next month to begin their In Your Area World Tour, which will introduce some changes to members solo stages from what they’ve performed so far. Some stay the same or retain certain aspects while others change entirely. Again, the members are allowed input, but the stages are ultimately management’s decision. For the beginning of their world tour, the members also have fittings for new stage outfits.

Thanks Yanks! RIP Dad

For Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS we had a typical crew over the crib on 21st St., and some time around Grady Little’s leaving Pedro Martinez in for an inning too long things started to get rowdy. Beer bottles banging in synchronization on the living room table, obscenities and insults being thrown through the TV at anyone on Boston or from Boston as the Yankees staged a classic comeback to eventually be capitalized by Aaron Boone’s shot that sent us all into embrace on the couch. That 6-man hug.

 “But the Yankees always win,” said the stripper from next door who was from New York but knew nothing about baseball. “Let somebody else win for a change.”

 Who invited her over?

 I explained to her that albeit ironic, it’s only right that the Yankees “always win” (it’s obviously not literally always – just way, way more than everyone else), as they represent New York. The football Giants are a New York sports team, sure, as are the Mets and Jets, but all over the world it’s the Yankees logo that symbolizes New York (beyond just sports). If we can agree that New York is the greatest city in the world then wouldn’t logic dictate that at least one of its teams boast the most bravado and dominant legacy? Surely we’re not getting such a performance out of the Mets, and by this rationale the Knicks’ past 20 years would be better suited for Pierre, South Dakota.

 “So, could you imagine if the Yankees didn’t exist?” I asked the exotic dancer. “If The South Bronx didn’t have the most arrogant, victorious, financially gluttonous, alpha squad in all of sports, where would we be? Who would we be? Would ‘New York’ even hold the same meaning?”

 “Oh,” she looked over at me with her jaw open. “I never thought of it like that.”

 “Obviously.”

 “Okay, I’m rooting for the Yankees.”

 Yankee fans often get accused of being bandwagon riders, which is relatively mindless, especially when aimed at NY/NJ natives who at worst had a 50% chance of becoming a fan to begin with. Personally, my love for the Yankees has grown with age, concurrent with pride for my hometown, also with an increasing number of positive associations with the franchise.

 One of my favorite things in the world besides baseball is hip hop, which was born in The Bronx, coincidentally in the same year I was just a few miles south of it. For me the Yankees mean hip hop, especially since their arch rival, Boston, has a checkered past (and present) in race relations, and was the last team in baseball to hire a black player to their team.

 I love the Yankees’ pinstripes and that they were the first to wear them, also how clever was the original idea, in reference to the bustling “Wall Streeters” that are equally signature to the town’s character (Umm, why do the Arizona Diamondbacks wear stripes?). Maybe even cooler than the pinstripes is that the Yankees are the only team in American sports that does not put the players’ names on the back of the uniforms. It’s about the team.

 I love their magical fate, as even before the big spending of Steinbrenner and free agency were the likes of Mickey Mantle and Joe Dimaggio, Lou Gehrig, who gave the greatest speech in the history of sports; and that other guy – only the most famous athlete ever in America. So even if one wanted to minimize their more recent championships as “purchased,” the majority were more likely karmic.

 I love that every game at the Stadium ends with Frankie Baby, the New York legend with “his olive oil voice and guinea charm.” Because win, lose or draw, we all love New York, New York after a ballgame at the stadium. I love that every real baseball fan knows which stadium is “The Stadium,” and take great pride in being one of the few teams that hasn’t sold out the name to some major financial institution or corporate conglomerate. You don’t buy me out. I buy you out.

 Most of all I love the Yankees because my father did. Dad was born in New York in 1932, the year of their fourth title, and had me in ’78, the year of their 22nd (2+2=4). I suppose two family members both being born in years of Yankee titles during the 20th century wasn’t such a coincidence, but nevertheless…

 Even in the middle of June Dad digested every game as if it was a Game 7, glued to the TV, otherwise asking strangers in public if they’d heard the score, and God forbid a relief pitcher should throw four consecutive balls with a big lead he would slam a fist on his thigh and foot on the floor, cursing or shaking his head in frustration as if any of it mattered at all. It was ridiculous behavior, and my brother and I would make fun of him for it, in spite of having surely sponged a milder version of the same impassioned tendencies ourselves.

 A few months ago Dad called me around 10:00 night, an unusual hour for the elder statesman in his recent years. I looked at my girlfriend, bewildered, then back at the phone and picked up. After exchanging what had become our typically mundane pleasantries he became more vulnerable, more interesting, and I stared at my girl, on the edge of my seat for what was to come. Some gossip about Mom, some elder philosophical reflection - what could it be?

 “You know, I think…” he stammered through self-awareness. “I think in recent years I allow myself to be too emotionally affected by the outcome of the Yankee games. Do you find that about me?”

 It was probably the hardest he’d made me laugh since I was a child.

 I humored the old man and offered to him that maybe he should try adopting my own approach, which is to not allow myself to get too attached to the regular season and/or insignificant games. “Just the playoffs,” I told him. “If you’re going to bed upset about your team getting bounced out of the playoffs that’s relatively understandable. If you’re miserable about going 56-45 instead of 57-44 then maybe you should consider talking to someone.”

 He reciprocated my laughter, told me he loved me and abruptly hung up. I hope I was helpful.

 Last week at the ripe old age of 85 Dad passed away. He had a great run, as they say, just like “the baby bombers,” but much like losing a Game 7, death is never easy.

 In his final years Dad was difficult to communicate with, as his senses dramatically waned along with his patience and once upbeat spirit, and it slowly broke my heart and frequently tried my own patience. We all felt the frustration of struggling to have any conversation of substance with him, which is part of the reason the mundane small talk became so commonplace. Though it never became easy (for me). When forced into a corner, such as sitting in traffic or any one on one interaction, I’d defer to baseball, which is exactly what I did at our final lunch together in the city a few weeks ago. My plan worked and I remember commenting to my brother afterwards that the lunch was pleasant, conversation above average, and I was grateful that the Yankees gave us something of substance to connect over.

 I’m so grateful Dad got to watch an exciting season, so grateful he got to see us beat Minnesota and Cleveland, and I hope wherever he was that he got to see those three home games against Houston. The ALCS, while disappointing in the end, served as a wonderful source of distraction, joy, hope and excitement for my mom and brother and I during what was otherwise the most difficult week we’d ever all collectively shared. Instead we got to cheer and yell and rejoice a little, and even occasionally cursed as we slammed our fists into our thighs and feet into the floor, all over this meaningless kids’ game. I love the Yankees, now even more than ever, as they gave me such a gift in so many forms both through my father’s life and passing as well. I thank you, Dad. And thanks, Yanks! Thanks for the fantastic run.
