Hey it’s XwordAnon again! Ive finished the story! I apologise for being late. I had a massive headache all day and I couldn’t write for the life of me. But I managed to get it finished in the end.
Also, please bare in mind when you read this that I’m not a good writer. It’s decently long. Hopefully it’s good! Anyway, here’s…
Xanthic.
“These flowers are going to be the death of me.”
Sighing, I walked inside into the ever-so desolate flower shop. The familiar chime of the door bell greeted me when one else did. I didn’t often go here but I’ve been in here once or twice, long enough to know that there was only three people running the entire shop. Which was, at least to me, surprising.
Hearing rummaging going on in the back, I waited patiently at the front desk and begun to look around.
Mostly, it was just flowers. As you’d expect. All around me were flowers unlike I’ve ever seen before. Most of them were surprisingly more vibrant than what you’d expect if you had only seen photos of them. The walls were painted in a nice light green colour with some white polka dots dotted around arbitrary. Like if someone spattered them on the walls in hopes that it might look good.
Hanging above me was the small white ceiling lights, they only admitted a small amount light. Probably just there for the looks of the hanging lights. The ceiling itself was in a dome shape. It was a bit odd but I thought it fit.
The people that ran the shop seemed nice but I didn’t really know them that much. It’s true that I knew their names and chat with them from time to time but I wouldn’t exactly call us friends. Actually, everyone in this town is was nice and welcoming. It’s oddly suffocating. This town itself seems fake, almost like a dollhouse. Being puppeteered by some unforeseen hand that wants to make everyone and everything perfect.
Or maybe I’m thinking too much into it.
“Crud, didn’t know you were here.”
A distance masculine voice sounded out. Their voice restless and rugged as if on edge, or just overtired. I couldn’t tell.
Sam, I think their name was. Worked at the shop for the last 4 years. Out of the three that ran the shop he was certainly the more intimidating one. Or that’s what he’d like you to believe.
The youngest was the actually the scariest. Theo. I’ve seen them almost kill a man when someone rudely interrupted a conversation between them and Sam. I don’t know the full details but I was there when that happened. I was more confused at the time than scared. After that the first store owner, Ann offered me a free bunch of flowers when i walked into their store for an apology for whatever that was.
Ann was different from most people within the town. She seemed genuinely nice, compared to the plastic and robotic responses everyone else gave me. A bit clumsy it was endearing. I talked to her the most out of three. Well, it was more like she talked to me and I just listened. It was nice.
“Sorry for walking in this late, meant to come in earlier but I was wondering about those.. you know those flowers with purple and yellow in the middle?”
Racking my brain, I struggled to think of the name of the flower. Didn’t help that it was almost 11 pm. Usually I would of grabbed a coffee by now. But it was too late to do anything now.
“Purple with yellow in the middle... is it a pansy?”
He pointed towards on of the pots that were hanging on the walls. The amount of flowers on the walls made you think that the walls were covered in nothing but flowers. But if you looked closer you could see the individual flower pots hanging unevenly on the wall and ceiling. All of them made a beautiful rainbow gradient on the wall. Ether intentional or not, it was beautiful. Although most of them were just different shades of yellow.
The amount of yellow flowers here astonishes me. At least two thirds must be yellow flowers. The rest being every other colour. There’s no shot that there’s any less that that. But regardless, that wasn’t the flower I was after.
“Nah.“
I spoke, thoughtfully. I could feel my tiredness kick in. It wasn’t anything unusual, I need to made a note to buy more coffee on my way out.
“Blue enchanting convolvulus?”
He asked walking over to one of the ones on the wall, gently putting his hand underneath the flower. Acting as if the flower in question was made of glass, tenderly brushing on of the petals.
I knew Sam and Ann really cared for the plants. Not so much Theo. With the sheer amount of plants, you’d expect one of the flowers to be at least on their way out. Nope. All of them looked gorgeous and well looked after. I wasn’t a flower kind of person but it looked aesthetically very nice.
“No, but that one is very pretty.”
I replied back to him. Pulling a loose button from my pocket. Maybe I should grab one of those flowers too? Would she even like them? I began mindlessly playing with the medium sized black button. Waiting for the answer, I silently sighed. Why didn’t I just take a photo of it. It would of been easier.
“Purple iris?”
He looked inquisitively at me. Seeing if it was the the right answer.
“Yeah! That’s the one!”
Talking a bit louder than my usual tone. I walked over to him and looked the flower. Just as pretty as I found it when I went for that walk on the way back from the flower shop the first time. Now that I thought about it, why didn’t I just walk back there and took a photo of it there?
“What do you need it for?”
He questioned bluntly. Picking up a couple of the flowers from the bunch.
“Oh I just need three. Planning on doing a project with them.”
I wasn’t too talented with arts and crafts but I found out how to make a small necklace with the flower inside. I only needed one but I thought it would be good for a backup incase I messed something up.
“Alright. Who are you giving it to?“
Leaning onto the empty wall behind him, he inquired. I could feel my heart pang in subtle shock. I didn’t think he would ask me. I knew who I was going to give it too but, did I want him to know?
“Asking a lot of questions, ay?”
I jokingly told him. Trying to mask my shock. It wasn’t this big of a deal, why was I scared of telling him?
“You don’t have to tell me.”
He took a packet of what I thought was gum and unraveled the blue wrapping paper to reveal a white rectangle of some sort. Then he threw it into his mouth, chewing on it midway through his sentence.
“I’m joking. I’ll tell you. I wanted to do something for Ann.”
I stopped beating around the bush and told him. It was his turn to be shocked. Though it wasn’t very evident. He grinned.
“Ann? Is that why you’re picking up irises?”
Somewhere in that voice of his I heard the refection of my previous joking tone. It was pretty hard trying to get a read on the guy.
“Yeah. Heard somewhere that irises meant something about friendship.”
I responded back to him. Hopefully I wasn’t wrong, it would be pretty stupid of me if that was wrong.
“If you’re picking up something for Ann then I recommend that you get a lilac too, she love em.”
He chimed in. Still chewing on his gum. Picking up a lilac flower that was right next to the irises. Both a distinguished shade of purple. He put all four of them in a nice dark purple wrapping paper and carefully handed it to me.
“Alright then I will! Thank you for your help Sam.”
Picking it up softly, I handed the money needed. He didn’t need to place them in the paper due to it only being four flowers, but I thought it was a nice touch. Maybe not everyone in this town was bad. I put my left hand back into my pocket with the button and held the flowers in my other hand.
“No problem, take care.“
