Wantage
I woke up this morning from a dream of unimaginable success into immobility. I had one eye slit open slightly. I remember scrambling, trying to make sense of the pattern of the wall.
I woke up. I felt nothing.
I’m sorry for living at the same time as you, making you contend with my existence. I’m sorry for bleeding (like an animal). I’m sorry I don’t know how to be alive.
As an intellectual exercise, I told my graduate student I dealt with sleep paralysis in the morning. She’d just told me she was tired, and I wanted to relate.
“I can’t remember if I slept too much or too little,” I said.
“I’m sorry,” she said. “That sucks.”

The Cedar of Lebanon was introduced to Britain around 400 years ago, and today the tree is found in many British parks and estates. The oldest one was planted in 1646 at a rectory near Wantage in Oxfordshire.

This fellow in the Norfolk mud is Trooper HT Dicky Hart of D (Wantage) Sqn., Berkshire Yeomanry. He ended the war as Sergeant HT Hart DCM MM. The DCM won at Gallipoli and the MM for the Second Battle of Gaza in April 1917.
Shown in the photo he still has the butt bucket for his SMLE on the offside with the obsolete 1899 patt curved sword on the nearside.
These swords were issued in Mid October 1914 to the Regiment

"For once Killick had no bad news of any kind to report, which probably accounted for his more than usually surly mutter in reply to Jack's greeting; though on reflection he did recall that the Doctor had fallen out of his cot at some time in the middle watch and had been lashed in so tight by Mr. Wantage that he would certainly be late for breakfast.
Breakfast, whose delectable scents were wafting into the great cabin as Jack shaved in the quarter-gallery just at hand, was a good hearty meal to which he often invited one of the officers who had stood the morning watch: but today, in view of the very rough night they had had, and in view of Stephen's cursed snappishness at having been so bitterly constrained - seven double turns and scarcely a breath a minute - he thought they should eat alone."

“...I used to—do some of that. Carving. For my dad.” “What did you carve the horse onto?” “Pendants,” said Billy, surprisingly. “On little circles of wood with leather through ’em. For tourists. Sold them in a shop over in Wantage.” ... "I hated putting the horse on them Mr. Strike. I hated it."
-Billy talks about his carvings of the Uffington White Horse, Lethal White, chapter 56.

Queen Camilla’s Patronages
Wilts and Berks Canal Trust (Patron from 19.04.2006)
You may not have heard of the Wilts & Berks Canal as it has been derelict for nearly a century. There are ambitious plans to bring the waterway back to life. Its called the Wilts & Berks because it is said that a lazy draughtsman could not be bothered to write in full the county names! Swindon is mid point of the waterway which linked the Thames at Abingdon with the Kennet & Avon Canal near Melksham. A further link was made from Swindon to the Thames & Severn Canal at Cricklade (The North Wilts Canal). There were also branches to Chippenham, Calne, Longcot (near Shrivenham) and Wantage. The waterway now is located in Wiltshire Swindon and Oxfordshire since Local Government boundary changes in the 1970’s. The Wilts & Berks Trust is committed to returning this historic waterway to a navigable state. The canal will restore an important link in the national waterways network, but the project will be part of the green infrastructure of the region, creating connections between existing wildlife habitats and creating aquatic and wetland habitats for endangered species.

For the ask meme: to live and die amongst you all?
to live and die amongst you all is a fic in the Tilbury universe, in which @rain-sleet-snow and I add Temeraire Dragons to every Heyer novel we can.
This particular fic is a joint production. The beginning of one of my scenes, in which I do immense violence to the timeline of Faro's Daughter...
--
It was past dawn when the last of the revellers departed the gaming house in St-James Square, seen on their way by the uncompromising presence of Mr Wantage. One of the sluggardly few, whose presence had preserved them from concerns about the curfew, was Colonel Fabre, who took his leave of Miss Grantham with unhurried punctiliousness, raising her gloved hand to his lips.
“If you should require an escort this morning,” he said, keeping her hand trapped in his, “I am entirely at your service.”
“This morning?” said Miss Grantham, widening her dark eyes ingenuously, “Why, sir, this morning I have no intention of stirring from the house.”
“You will not attend the execution, though? And when the gentleman was such a close friend?”
“Sir,” said Deb, “He was no friend of mine, but of my father’s, and I am sorry that he should come to such an end, and more sorry that he should have taken advantage of my aunt’s hospitality to do so!”

"Residents have slammed the “horrendous” congestion caused by a crowd of birdwatchers who flocked to a Oxfordshire town to snap pictures of a rare bird.
The photographers descended on Hallett Close in Wantage on Monday (September 26) after news broke that a Common Nighthawk was spotted snoozing on a garden fence.
The medium-sized, nocturnal bird weighs just 80g and measures 24cm in length, with a wing-span of 64cm.
Tumblr media
Despite its name, the Common nighthawk is a very rare bird in the UK. This is because the species lives in North America, migrating many thousands of miles to South America in the winter months.
There have only been a handful of recorded sightings of the species in the UK in recent decades. Once news reached twitchers that a Common Nighthawk was in the UK, dozens of them headed to Wantage to capture pictures of the bird.
Photographs taken at the scene showed a huge crowd of around 50 avid bird fans set up in front of the fence, snapping images of the sleepy creature. All this attention inevitably caused higher traffic in the area which did not sit well with some people living in the street. One resident, Yvonne Andrews, took to social media in a Wantage community group on Facebook to describe Springfield Road – which leads to Hallett Close –  as “completely congested by cars, people and some with cameras”. [...]
Another resident, Alison Wren, thought that with the number of people and cameras in the street there had been murder, rather than a “sweet little bird trying to have a nap”. "

Henry ‘Chips’ Channon: The Diaries (Vol. 1), 1918-38, entry for 7th March 1923
Wednesday 7th March
I have reached a very advanced age!¹ I was pleased to receive a cheque for £100 from father. I danced at Lady Crawford’s.² They built a gallery to house the Dutch pictures inherited from Lady Wantage. The primitifs have all been moved to the dining room. They have a glorious collection of pictures ... and children too. There are about seven of the latter, all enormous and stupid except Balniel,³ who is a shy, reserved long-nosed rare creature whom I knew well at Oxford. He is knowledgeable about pictures. Lady Crawford looms like a Medusa and is vast. She wears unsuccessful frocks in dullish colours, which are a bad background for her heavy massive jewels. She always looks untidy, if not dirty, which Lord Crawford, the most charming of men, frankly is.
1. It was his 26th birthday, or as far as his friends were concerned, his 24th.
2. Constance Lilian Pelly (1873–1947), married in 1900 David Alexander Edward Lindsay (1871–1940), by courtesy Lord Balcarres from 1880 to 1913, when he succeeded his father as 27th Earl of Crawford and 10th Earl of Balcarres. He served in Lloyd George’s Cabinet.
3. David Alexander Robert Lindsay (1900–75), by courtesy Lord Balniel from 1913 to 1940, when he succeeded his father (vide supra) as 28th Earl of Crawford and 11th Earl of Balcarres.
