Jason’s eyes widened. His heart was pounding so hard he was sure she could hear it.

“Looking for me, Jaybird?” she teased, her voice light and carefree, as if she hadn’t just given him a heart attack.
Before he could respond, she leaned down and kissed him.
Jason’s eyes widened, his brain short-circuiting as her lips pressed against his. It was quick and unexpected, and his face went red hot in an instant.
When she pulled back, she was still grinning. Jason, on the other hand, was a mess.

She winced but gave him a crooked smile. “I’m fine, Jaybird. Just bruised my pride a little.”
Before he could argue, she leaned up and kissed him again. This time, Jason didn’t freeze.
He kissed her back.
It was clumsy and hesitant, but it was real. Her lips were warm and soft, and for a moment, the chaos of the world around them faded away.
When she pulled back, she was smirking again, her eyes sparkling with mischief. “So, did you like it?”

The air was cooler, and the stars—hidden as they were by the smog—still seemed to fight to peek through.
She sat beside him, knees hugged to her chest, her mask discarded so she could feel the breeze. Jason was talking, half-joking about how one of the Joker’s goons had slipped on a banana peel during their last fight. His voice carried a rare lightness, a softness that only came out when they were alone like this.
“You should’ve seen his face,” Jason said with a grin. “It was like he’d just realized his whole life was one big punchline. Priceless.”

“We’re going to get married,” he said, his voice steady, his eyes locked on hers.
Her mouth opened slightly, confusion flashing across her face. “W-What?”
“I said, we’re going to get married,” Jason repeated, dead serious. His jaw was set, his tone leaving no room for argument.
For a moment, she just stared at him, her lips parted in surprise. “Jason, that’s not—you can’t just say stuff like that—”
“You love me,” he interrupted, his voice softening, though his grip on her hand didn’t waver. “And I…” He hesitated, the words catching in his throat. “I love you too. So yeah. We’re getting married.”
She blinked at him, her face caught between disbelief and something he couldn’t quite name. And then, to his surprise, she laughed.

- I feel like his love languages would be quality time and physical touch, he wouldn’t be used to touch at first but would gradually warm up to it. Definitely wouldn’t be the type to be over the top with public affection. Maybe handholding or a hand on your waist in public, but that’s probably it

For the first 20 years of my life I couldn't get a good night's sleep. I was constantly tired. I would get in bed and toss and turn for literal hours that felt like days because my brain just wouldn't. Turn. Off. And then I'd wake up five hours later, still exhausted but too wired to go back to sleep. I wanted to sleep, but my brain was stuck in 90-miles-an-hour mode and laying in bed is boring which is excruciatingly painful when you have (as I eventually learned I do) ADHD.
After I was diagnosed with ADHD my therapist said that my sleep issues were linked to it and prescribed a medicine to help. Take it 45 minutes before you want to go to bed, she said. So I did. 45 minutes after taking it I got in bed and closed my eyes.
And my brain was quiet. I fell asleep in like 15 minutes and woke up 9 hours later more rested than I had ever been in my entire life. It felt amazing.
As an added bonus, my chronic (I'm talking multiple-times-per-week) migraines went away very-literally overnight once I stopped being constantly sleep-deprived. I cannot overstate how much of an improvement getting medicated was to my quality-of-life.
When I say my brain was "quiet", I don't mean that my mind was dulled. I'm not taking sedatives to sleep. I can still wake up just fine if something happens around me.
To continue the "90-miles-an-hour" metaphor, without medication my brain was like a car with the accelerator pedal welded to the floorboard, the gearshift locked in high-gear, and the key stuck in the ignition with no "Off" position. The only way to not go racing off in some direction was to constantly stand on the brake pedal as hard as possible (leading to burn-out), or turn the steering wheel hard-over and do doughnuts to stay in one place (not going anywhere but unable to sit still), or wait for the gas to run out and the engine to finally sputter to a stop (collapse from exhaustion). Also there's not a lot of torque when you're in high-gear, so it's hard to get moving from a standstill and hard to go uphill or through any resistance.
Getting medicated was like fixing the gas pedal, gearshift, and ignition so I can drive normally at whatever speed is best. I can still go fast if I want to, but I can also slow down and come to a gentle stop, without constantly burning out the brakes and tires. It's a choice now.

Communication through dance
One of my absolute favorite tropes is when some form of dancing is involved between the main characters.
Moments where one of the main characters has to watch their love interest dance with someone else (looking at you Apology Tour).
Moments where the main characters dance but they are currently on rocky ground, unsure of where they stand with the other person (looking at you Sinsmas).
Dancing is one of those socially acceptable forms of prolonged touch that always create great moments of revelations or moments of connection; newfound potential or reaffirming something that has been there all along.
The scene of them dancing at the end of Sinsmas is much more than just their verbal exchanges. First and foremost the fact that Blitz asked Stolas to dance at all instead of going back inside (even when Stolas was like it’s okay, I’m good, go enjoy the holiday) says a lot. Blitz cares about him so much, wants him to be happy even though he knows life is a dumpster fire for him right now. And maybe he is also making up for the fact that he didn't get to dance with Stolas at Verosika's party (and saw Stolas react as if he had never been asked before). It's a relatively safe way to show his affection for Stolas without it being taken as too intimate or sexual. Stolas could back down if he wanted to, say no thank you, which allows him to have some agency.
Then we get to the actual dancing. It’s not just swaying back and forth, head on shoulders so they can’t see each others faces. They are moving as if they have done this dance before. Seamlessly changing hands, twirling, steps fluid (Blitz doesn’t even once miss his footing on the thin railing) and staring right into each others eyes.
They fall back into a routine, semi-flirting, touching and holding each other because they are familiar with the others body and how it moves.
And the dip! Stolas laughing! His little leg lift!! It was a moment of connection for them, soft, transcending them to a moment where all their worries have been swept aside and they just have each other. A subtle reminder of the way they were before, of the ease with which they work together.
Then, THEN, we get to the end, breathing slightly elevated, eyes widening and staring at each other lips (this is my favorite moment of any dancing trope, the realization that 'woah now, there is something here; I can’t stop gazing deeply into your eyes'). They both realize at the same moment that that spark between them hasn't fizzled out just yet. The potential for more is still there.
But Blitz, my beautiful lizard man, knows that he needs to take this slow, that jumping into anything more right now is moving too fast. There is still so much that needs to be figured out and healed. So he ends their dance with a hug. Comfort and love. Ugh these two.
And all of it is done under the warm glow of a full moon. (Or is that the portal to heaven?) Either way it’s implied that they are dancing under the full moon. And of course the lyrics (Sam Haft I see you) "truer love is hard to find".

The first time you met her, it was quiet. Not in the literal sense, of course. Nothing about Jinx is quiet. You were in your workshop, huddled over a broken panel from some long-abandoned tech. Suddenly, the door slammed open like a gunshot.
You didn't flinch. Not because you were brave, but because you had grown used to Zaun's chaos crashing into your life uninvited. That's just how things were. However, the girl who stormed in wasn't just disorderly. She was the embodiment of madness.
Bright blue hair, wild eyes, and a grin that sat crookedly on her face. You recognize her instantly. She's Jinx. Her reputation is infamous, but nothing prepares you for how real she feels. How alive she truly is. Your mind goes silent for a moment.
"Hey gearhead, fix this!" She chirps, dropping something metal and smoking onto your worktable. The piece clatters, nearly knocking your tools to the ground.
"What is it?" You know better than to expect any sort of formal introduction, although the nickname surprises you. You also know that Jinx is mechanically brilliant. At least, from what you hear. You wonder why she can't fix the gadget herself.
"it's supposed to be a trigger mechanism." She crosses her arms, unamused by your hesitation. "It caught slightly on fire. Don't worry. It'll probably only explode if you're really bad at this."
You blink, picking up the damaged device with careful, gloved hands. The metal is warm and warped. There is a faint smell of smoke lingering in the air. You examine it thoroughly, turning it over and over in your hands.
"You overloaded it." You mutter, glancing up at her. She tilts her head, giving you an almost offended expression, like a curious crow staring at a shiny stone.
"Overloaded?!" She scoffed. "No, I improved it! Just... too much..." You resist the urge to roll your eyes. "Relax, gearhead. I'm a genius! I just need someone to keep up. That's where you come in."
"Give me an hour." You smile at her dramatics before turning back to the device. "It's not unsalvageable." She raises an eyebrow; a sharp and disapproving look on her face.
"An hour? Are you that slow? I heard you were supposed good at this." So, she had heard of you from somewhere. Her tone is a bit rude, but it doesn't seem to carry any real malice.
"Do you want it fixed, or do you want it fast?" You reply without missing a beat. Her laughter bounces off the walls of your dainty little shop.
"Alright, gearhead. An hour." She chuckles, headed for the door. "Don't blow up!" You don't dignify that with a response. You're already focused on disassembling the smoking pieces of the device.

Jinx returned an hour later, and then she never really left.
It started small. More gadgets needing repair and weapons she swore shouldn't be jamming. You wonder, at first, why someone like her would come to you. Surely, she could handle all these simple repairs herself. Yet, she keeps showing up, slamming the door like she owns the place and sprawling across your workshop like a cat who refuses to leave.
Her presence is overwhelming. She chatters while you work, her voice filling every quiet corner of your shop. Sometimes, she even sings. Once, she threw a wrench at you to see if you would have any reaction.
"You're so weird." She told you one day, hanging upside down from the pipe which ran across your ceiling. "You're not really scared of me. Most people are. They treat me like a ticking bomb that could go off at any second."
"I know." You mutter without looking up from your work. You feel so opposite to her. She's loud, vibrant, and always moving. You, on the other hand, are quiet. You own a little shop on the edge of Zaun, living out your days monotonously.
"Why?" She swings back and forth, like a pendulum, watching your gentle movements with her electric eyes. "Why are you not all freaked out about me?"
"I think..." You pause, considering how you want to word your thoughts. "I think you're smarter than most people give you credit for. You're a genius, Jinx. Just like you say. Sure, maybe you're a little reckless sometimes, but I've seen the things you bring me. The things you make. I doubt most people can dream up designs like yours."
She is silent. For the first time since you met the girl, there is a long stretch of silence between you two. You look up from your work, worried. You see something shift in her expression, like a crack in a mask you didn't know she was wearing. She looks vulnerable. Then, as quickly as it came, it was gone.
"You like me." She smirks, pointing a finger at you as if she were accusing you of something. "You think I'm pretty and smart and you like me."
"I think you need to be more careful." You chuckle, returning to the gadget you were repairing. "Someday you may end up blowing yourself up, along with everything else."
"Maybe that's the point." She mutters under her breath, so softly that you almost don't hear it, but you do. You choose not to say anything for the meantime, turning back to your work as silence once again stretches between you.

Over time, you became her calm. You don't know when it happened, or why. Jinx storms in and out of your life like a hurricane. Yet, you are fond of those rare, quiet moments when you get to see glimpses of something softer. Something she doesn't show to anyone else.
One night, she sits on the floor of your workshop, surrounded by blueprints and half-finished creations. For once, you have nothing to do but keep her company. You watch her tinker with a clockwork bomb, trusting that she won't blow you both to pieces.
"You really think I'm smart?" She asks suddenly. You take a deep breath in, leaning back in your uncomfortable wooden chair.
"I do. Of course I do. I wouldn't lie about that. I wouldn't lie to you at all, Jinx." You say calmly. She doesn't respond right away. Instead, she picks at a smear of grease on her palm. Her expression is impossible to read.
"Everyone else thinks I'm just crazy." She whispers, looking up at you. There's no teasing in her eyes. No crooked grin. She doesn't feel like an insane criminal. Just a girl who doesn't know how to take a compliment. "You're weird."
"And you're a genius. Don't forget that." You smile. She says nothing else, but you can see the soft smile on her lips. The real smile. You wish you could stay that moment, where the chaos feels a little quieter.

The fox hybrid to your left seems to notice your unease and reaches down to slip his hand onto your thigh with a reassuring squeeze, knocking you out of the daze you seem to be caught in. “Pretty, you need to eat…” He whispers into your ear and you nod, taking a few slow bites but with the tense feeling in the air it feels like swallowing rocks instead of the pieces of vegetables and tender meat you and Minho had prepared.
You feel an pair of eyes practically glued to you from beside Felix and with a hard swallow you look up to meet Seungmin’s gaze, the hybrid quickly looking down at his bowl but he seems to not have much of an appetite either.
Everyone seems to finish their meals and part one by one until it is just you and Seungmin, Minho having scolded the both of you that until at least half of your bowls were empty you were not to leave the table. You heard the hybrid let out a small whimper and winced a bit, trying to make yourself at least eat half like Minho had said but your mind was moving too fast for you to focus on food at that moment. Carefully, you looked back over at Seungmin and waved softly, taking a shaky breath. “Um…Seungmin?” God, this was probably a bad idea. You just felt awful for making him so uncomfortable. While you had at least taken a few decent bites of food he hadn’t touched a single thing.
When his name left your mouth he flinched, causing your heart to ache as you frowned at him. “I just wanted to say I’m sorry…um- yeah..I’m sorry.” You couldn’t think of anything else to say, mentally slapping yourself for sounding so silly but when you hear the sound of his spoon clinking against his bowl as he slowly begins to eat, you quickly relax. The two of you eat in silence for the rest of your meal, both of you managing to clear your bowls much to the older cat hybrids delight.
As Minho passed by, collecting the dirty dishes he gave you a light pat on the head and a soft. “Good job.” Which caused you to beam proudly and get up from your seat. When you glanced to where the beagle hybrid had been sitting you noticed he was already gone, frowning a bit to yourself but you should have known it would talk a bit longer, if at all, for him to become comfortable being around you from what Jeongin had explained.
You joined the two cat hybrids in the kitchen, leaning against the counter by the sink as you watched Minho wash and Felix dry and put away the dishes. “Is there anything I can do to help?” You asked, watching the way they worked to fluidly and in sync. They gave each other a look, smiling softly before Felix turned to you. “We’ve got it, just rest for tonight and then you can help with breakfast in the morning.” You nod slowly, staying at the counter to observe them a bit longer. “Um…I hope you don’t mind me asking- but how are you guys so in tune with each other?” They give each other another look, almost seeming to communicate telepathically before Minho smiles at you. “Well, like how normal cats can form bonds to one another, Felix and I are bonded.” The younger hybrid nodded in agreement and you raised your eyebrow at them curiously. “Oh so you’re like…together?” Before they could answer you couldn’t help but tease the older of the two lightly, bringing back your conversation from earlier. “Is Felix the husband?” Minho laughed while he dried off his hands, having just finished washing the last dish, whereas Felix looked on with wide eyes and a horrified expression.
The older came up to you, hands resting on the counter you were leaning against on either side of you to cage you in. The cat smirked, leaning in so his face was inches from your own. “What makes you so curious about if I have a husband? Are you wanting to fill that position?” A blush fanned across your cheeks, looking up wide eyed as Felix burst into laughter beside you. You mumbled, not sure if he would even be able to hear you. “‘m not a husband, I’m a wife-“ of course, he still heard, all hybrids having a very keen sense of hearing. A light purr rumbled in the older cat’s chest as he leaned in even closer to whisper in your ear. “I’m sure you’re a very good wife, indeed…might just have to take you for myself.”
A low growl could be heard from beside you, causing you to turn your head and face the fox hybrid with his ears flat to his head and tail puffed up like he had been electrocuted. “Hyung, back. off.” Jeongin’s voice was tight, and for the first time you could see the sharp point of his canines as he snarled at the older hybrid.
Minho smirked at the youngest, tilting his head to the side as he pulled back from you. “Awe, our innie is feeling a bit jealous? Don’t worry, I was only teasing.” You blinked a few times, looking from Minho to Jeongin. “Jealous?” The younger hybrid blushed as he turned his face away shyly, coughing into his hand. Your expression softened and you pushed away from the counter to ruffle his soft hair and give a light scratch behind his ears. “Oh Jeongin, there’s no need to be jealous. You’ll always be my best friend here.” Minho and Felix looked on with wide eyes, not believing how oblivious you could be and the fox before you let out a little whine before pulling you to him protectively while glaring at his hyungs over the top of your head.
You allowed the youngest to nuzzle against you, his need to completely drench you in his scent taking over even as you turned around in his arms to face the two cat hybrids once more. “Wait, so if you are bonded that must mean you’ve been together for a long time right?”
Minho shrugged, looking back at Felix as if he was checking to see if it was alright to answer your question and the younger cat nodded. “We were raised at the same shelter.” Minho said finally, Felix coming over to stand beside him and rest his head on the older’s shoulder. “Wait- like where Innie is from?” You felt the fox in question tightening his grip around your waist and you instinctually brought a hand up behind you to run your fingers through his hair soothingly. Minho smiled at the interaction, arms crossing over his chest. “No, not necessarily….hybrid centers are a lot more- like a factory? They take hybrids from breeders and raise and condition them a specific way to make the most money. They aim to create the perfect pets…” The older’s words caused you to frown, your free hand gripping Jeongin’s wrist where his hands were clasped together around your midsection.
“Shelters, however, take in abandoned hybrids of all ages and aim to rehabilitate and nurture them. It’s a much more relaxed environment. Still- Felix and I had bonded almost instantly and when it came time that someone wanted to adopt him they refused to take me as well…” Felix had a pout on his delicate features, seeming to be recalling the events as he buried his face in the older’s neck and Minho, like you had with Jeongin, brought a hand to the back of his neck wordlessly and gave him a comforting squeeze. “That’s when we broke out and found ourselves here…we knew we wouldn’t be able to survive without each other and well- we seem to be doing just fine here don’t you think so?”
You smiled warmly, nodding your head. “I’d say so….is that why you aren’t as scared of me? Cause things were more relaxed for you growing up?” Felix nodded then, pulling away to face you. “Mhm! I mean, yeah it was scary when we were almost separated and they wouldn’t listen to us that we needed to be together….but overall the humans who took care of us were very kind.”
It made a lot of sense, the way the two seemed to be the least hesitant around you after having just met, aside from Jisung who you knew had never met a human before you so he had nothing really to compare you to to be wary. You thought for a moment why Jeongin seemed to warm up to you so quickly, only realizing that he had over a month of time alone with you just not to your knowledge of him being a hybrid and not a normal fox.
“I’m sorry they tried to separate you two…it’s so obvious that the two of you mean a lot to each other- I can’t imagine how scary that must have been.” You gave them a frown, stepping away from Jeongin, despite his whines of protest, to wrap your arms around both cat hybrids tightly. Felix embraced you happily while Minho feigned disgust, head thrown back as he let out an exaggerated groan that you were suffocating him.
You couldn’t help the laughter that escaped you as you pulled away, the cats bidding you a good night with reminders to be up early to help with breakfast and you assured them that you would be on time. Jeongin was quick to pull you back towards him, one again nuzzling against you aggressively. “You smell too much like Minho-hyung now.” He huffed, his cheek rubbing behind your ear and his breath tickling the back of your neck. “I-Innie cut it out-“ your words were halted when you felt the gentlest graze of sharp teeth against your neck. Your breath hitched and the hybrid could hear how your heart rate began to skyrocket.
Jeongin smirked to himself, pride swelling in his chest at the reaction he was able to pull from such a small gesture. He wondered briefly how you would react if he were really to bite down, claim you as his own for all his hyungs to see so that maybe they would back off and realize that you were his pretty human and they should know their place.
“Jeongin, stop.” Your words were firm, as firm as your palms placed against his shoulders as you pushed him away gently. “I think you’re starting to get a little carried away, pervy little fox.” Jeongin pouted, looking at you confused until he realized while lost in his daydream he had drooled all down the side of your neck and shoulder. Flames of embarrassment licked at his skin and caused him to flush tremendously. “I-I…I’m sorry pretty- shit-“ he looked around before grabbing the dish towel Felix had set aside when he finished drying the dishes earlier and carefully cleaned up the mess of fox slobber he had left on you.
You couldn’t help but giggle, causing the hybrid to smile at the sound. “What were you even thinking about, innie? You seemed so spaced out.” He blinked a bit, shaking his head immediately. No way he could tell you what he had been thinking of. What if you felt differently? What if you didn’t want to be his? What if you would be disgusted with his craving for such an animalistic act of possession.
“Jeongin? Calm down- you’re rubbing a bit hard there.” Panic set in once again and he pulled back quickly when he realized he had been scrubbing your skin raw as he once again got lost in thought. “You must be tired. Let’s go to bed, yeah?” Your soft smile calmed him instantly and he nodded, taking the hand you offered before letting you pull him back to room.
Once safely inside you pulled him over and sat him down on the edge of the bed, running your hands through his hair gently as his arms once again snaked their way around your waist with his face pressed against your stomach. You smiled softly down at him as you began to hum softly a tune to an old lullaby you had heard as a child.
“Pretty?” His voice was hesitant, just barely above a whisper. “Yes, innie?” He took a deep breath, eyes closed as he thought of how to say what it was he wanted to. “Did you- um….were you in-inlove? You know…with him?”
You sighed, eyes closing as you thought for a moment how to put it into words, just as the hybrid had before asking his question. “No, I wasn’t. Jeongin I…where I come from, women don’t have a say in what our futures hold. I married him because I was told to, not because of love.” His frown could be felt against where his cheek was pressed to your lower abdomen, your hands never ceasing in their soft mensurations of combing through his hair.
“That’s not very fair…aren’t you a human just like your husband? Why don’t you get to choose-“ You shrugged, looking down at him softly. “I don’t really know, innie. That’s just how I was raised…how all the girls were raised where I’m from. Even my mother, and all the mothers and grandmothers before them…for as long as we’ve known.” That answer didn’t seem to sit well with the hybrid, his hold on you tightening. “If you could have chosen…what would you have wanted your future to be?” The question was so innocent yet held so much meaning to you that tears slowly began to pool in your eyes. “I would have been a teacher.” You smiled bitterly, shaking your head. “But that doesn’t matter. Let’s get some sleep? I’m feeling very tired after today…”
Jeongin’s frown deepened, sensing that you were still holding back from him but he didn’t want to push any further and risk upsetting you more.
That night he held you a little closer, your head tucked under his chin as he gently rubbed between your shoulders as you entered a night of fitful sleep as memories from your past began to plague your mind for the first time since you had been brought to the cabin.
The next morning you woke up to find yourself alone, even though the sky was still dark outside behind the curtains hanging in front of the lone window in the room. “Jeongin?” You called out softly, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from your eyes before looking around. “He went out.” Came a voice near the door, startling you slightly as it was a voice you hadn’t heard before. “Oh-“ Chan was standing in the doorway, his sharp gaze fixed on you causing you to feel the need to squirm uncomfortably in your spot on the bed. “Um..okay- thank you for letting me know.” The wolf hybrid let out a little huff as a response, watching you carefully as you rose from the bed and headed towards him.
“Go join Minho in the kitchen. Breakfast needs to be ready soon.” His voice was so cold, causing you to tense the closer you got. Despite his words telling you to leave he still stood in the doorway blocking your path. “O-Okay…I’ll be sure to work quickly then-“ he nodded curtly, stepping out of the way hesitantly with eyes still glued to you as you walked past and into the kitchen. Gosh, he must think you’re so lazy and incompetent to come and get you himself like that. You felt a shiver run down your spine as you could feel his eyes still on your retreating form as you made your way to the kitchen. Why is he even allowing you to stay here if he seems to hate you so much? You shook the thoughts from your head, meeting Felix’s soft eyes and kind smile as you entered the kitchen. “Good morning, pretty! Minho-hyung is just with Ji getting some eggs from the chickens for breakfast. Would you like some tea while we wait?”
As you sat with the younger of the two cats as you both drank your tea, waiting for the older to return with Jisung in tow. While you waited you felt arms wrap around you from behind and you expected to see Jeongin’s face when you turned to greet the person those hands belonged to but instead you were met with a very sleepy ferret. “Oh- good morning Hyunjin.” You cooed, giving his head a few scratches causing him to squeak happily as Changbin came up behind him to lean against the counter between you and Felix. “Morning pretty- sorry for him. He wouldn’t get out of bed until he was sure you were up.” You giggled, shaking your head to the bunny as you took a sip from your mug. “It’s fine, I don’t mind the affection. It’s nice.” If Hyunjin had been a cat rather than a ferret he would have purred at your words, rubbing his cheek against your own causing you to laugh.
Your conversation with the three hybrids about how they had slept died off as Minho and Jisung came in with a basket of eggs and flushed faces from the cold. “Pretty! So nice to see you’re finally awake, I was beginning to worry you had forgotten you were helping this morning.” Oh, had you overslept without realizing? Guilt crept into your mind and the cat hybrid must have noticed because he walked over and gave a light flick to your forehead. “I’m teasing. You didn’t do anything wrong. I was just shocked Ayen didn’t wake you up before he left.” Left? You looked at him with confusion, pulling away from the cuddly Hyunjin who pouted only for a moment at the loss before turning to cling to Felix instead.
“Huh, left?” Minho nodded, getting out the rest of the supplies they would need for breakfast. “I sent him and Seungmin out extra early to go to your camp and collect your things. They’ve already made two trips now I think? This should be the last of it though…”
You blinked at him, still so confused as he pointed over to the door where you just happened to notice the crates from your makeshift camp stacked neatly on top of one another. “They- why did they bring my stuff here?”
The hybrids all looked at you confused, as if it was an obvious answer you were seeming to miss. Changbin spoke up, his tone posing his words as a question as if to say you should already be aware of the answer. “Because you are living with us now?” Your eyes fell on each of them as you took in the genuine looks on their faces. They were lying, they had to be. You got to stay here? Like- indefinitely?
You were so sure that when Minho had told you that you would be staying it would only be until winter was over and that you would be sent back on your own the second it began to warm up outside.
“Pretty, did you really think we weren’t going to let you stay?” Minho asked as he nudged your hip with his own, leaning down to whisper in your ear. “If not our little fox may run away to keep you company. Can’t have him doing that, now can we. Besides, then I’d lose my talented little helper.” You blushed at his words, choosing to turn away from him and wash your hands to begin preparing breakfast.
Breakfast time seemed to be a whole different ordeal than dinner time, with the hybrids coming and going quickly just grabbing a plate and scarfing it down before heading out to do their own chores.
At some point while you had still been cooking Jeongin and Seungmin had arrived with the last of your things, eating their own breakfast before heading back out on patrol. It seems the youngest’s punishment had been lifted and you felt a little sad knowing that you would see him less during the day, already having become accustomed to having him with you at almost all times.
Once everything from the meal was cleaned and put away you turned to Minho for further directions. “So- now what do we do?”
Minho raised an eyebrow at you, walking towards the staircase by Jeongin’s room. “What do you mean? We do whatever until it’s time for dinner. The kids can handle their own lunches whenever they finish their chores.” You frowned in confusion, looking around awkwardly. “Um- so there isn’t anything else to do?” The cat smirked, shrugging at he nodded to your pile of things by the door. “You could move those into Jeongin’s room and get settled if you’d like? He’s the only one besides Chan that doesn’t have a roomate so it’s between the two of them who you wanna bunk with…and I’m sure you would prefer to stay with our Ayen-ah.” The light teasing caused your cheeks to turn pink as you nodded and made your way over to start bringing your things to the room you were most familiar with.
The rest of the afternoon was spent alone in the fox hybrid’s room, carefully arranging your things as to not disturb his belongings. Once you were satisfied with the little set up you felt rather tired, having gotten up so early and working non-stop until so late in the afternoon. If you had to guess it was probably a quarter after three, still some time before you would have to join Minho in the kitchen to prepare dinner, you thought as you laid down on the bed and allowed yourself to doze off into a sleep much more peaceful than the one you’d had the night before.
Upon waking up you noticed the blanket that had been folded at the end of the bed frame was now draped over you where you had fallen asleep on top of the quilt rather than fully getting under the covers for your nap. Huh- it must have been Minho or Felix coming to check on you, you thought, smiling to yourself as you put your hand out to get up and felt something under your palm that startled you into pulling your hand back quickly and looking down to see what it had been.
There, lying neatly beside you was a single flower with vibrant purple petals that resembled the pattern of a daisy and a bright yellow center. You gasped lightly, being extremely careful as you picked it up to examine it closer with a soft smile on your face. You don’t think you had ever received flowers before in your life, the gesture warming your heart as you brought it closer to give it a sniff. It didn’t have much of a smell to it but its beauty was so simplistic and delicate you couldn’t stop staring.
Jeongin must have come back from his patrol early and left it for you, you concluded, carefully setting it on the dresser before heading out to meet Minho in the kitchen.
You seemed to miss the way Chan stood by the staircase, seemingly waiting for you to exit the room and notice him but you hadn’t, walking to your destination with your task in mind causing the wolf to sigh as a little pout reached his expression. He turned and headed back towards the back door, knowing he still had part of his patrol to finish though when he spotted the patch of wild asters in the field near his area of the forest he couldn’t wait to bring it back for you, hoping that this would make up from how shy he had been that morning clearly making you feel uneasy despite his attempt to finally speak with you.
As he shifted back into his wolf form after nearly folding his clothes and leaving them at the back porch, he took off in a sprint as he tried to forget how you seemed to never fully notice just how much he longed for your attention to fall on him softly as it seemed to even with Seungmin from the night before. What was he doing wrong? Why did you still only seem to fear him? He guessed he would just have to try harder for you to notice him.

anon, this ask plus thinking about lando taking off oscar's armor plus this incredible art of oscar did inspire me to write a little landoscar medieval au drabble (1.8k words, nsfw below the cut)
Lando’s gaze was fixed on where his fingers were working to free the buckle connecting Oscar’s breast plane to the pauldron covering his shoulder. Lando’s brow furrowed as he tugged the leather through the clasp, little pink tongue just poking between his lips. Every move was careful, methodical, like Oscar was a horse who might spook if Lando moved too quickly.
It was always strange, those first few moments after Oscar returned from the battlefield to the manor house where they’d set up camp, the bedroom full of furs and velvet and flickering candles. Remembering how to let himself be touched softly, handled gently. How to let someone get close to him without anticipating a dagger to the gut.
Lando managed to get the plates covering Oscar’s right arm off, before moving automatically to Oscar’s other side. He skimmed a thumb over Oscar’s jaw as he went, just the hint of a touch. He knew not to push too quickly. That Oscar needed time to remember how to be soft.
Months ago, when the first skirmishes had broken out, Oscar had thought he needed it hard and fast. He’d ride back from the field, leap off his horse mid-stride, toss the reins to a squire without a backward glance. By the time he reached Lando’s rooms he’d already be halfway out of his armor, pieces scattered behind him along the hall.
Lando would be hunched over his desk, studying miniatures, pouring over battle plans, the slim golden crown Lando wore in public tossed carelessly onto a chair. Oscar had thought about asking Lando to wear it while Oscar bedded him. Watch the crown prince fall apart for him.
But Oscar preferred when Lando was stripped free of it all, naked and honest and wanting. When Oscar could pretend that they were nothing more than two men taking pleasure in one another. That they had no titles other than their names.
In those first few weeks of war, though, Oscar felt like he’d forgotten how to be anything other than his title. He’d shove Lando over the table and fuck him rough and fast, fingers digging into Lando’s slim hips, sucking and biting at Lando’s skin.

Oscar had let Lando steer him to the bed, using nothing more than the soft press of his palm against Oscar’s chest. Let Lando push him back against the velvet bedding. Let Lando ride him, slow and steady and careful. Let Lando press kisses to each of Oscar’s fingers, his neck, his lips.
Oscar felt like he was remembering himself during it. Remembering that he was something capable of gentleness.
Eventually, he’d remembered himself enough to slide a hand into Lando’s curls, marveling at the way Lando leaned into his touch, and didn't shy away. Like he knew Oscar would never hurt him. Oscar wrapped his other hand around Lando’s cock and Lando shivered above him, letting out a breathless Oscar.
Oscar drank in every slow roll of Lando’s hips, Lando’s quiet gasps and breathy pants as Oscar stroked over Lando’s cock. When Lando came with a hitched moan, spilling hotly over Oscar’s stomach, Oscar tugged Lando down into a desperate kiss. “Thank you,” Lando murmured.
Lando draped the chain mail over a chair. It reminded Oscar of the shedded skin of a snake he’d seen in the woods once, fluttering over a branch. The echo of something dangerous.
Lando made quick work of the rest of Oscar’s clothes. Oscar tried not to notice the guilt on Lando’s face as he took in the fresh bruises littering Oscar’s skin.
But Lando brought a finger up to trace over what Oscar was certain was a particularly nasty one on his rib cage from when he’d been knocked from his horse with the flat of a sword.
After Oscar could barely stand it, he caught Lando’s hand and tugged it up to his lips. “Enough,” Oscar murmured, pressing a kiss to Lando’s knuckles.
Lando opened his mouth as if to say something, but he said nothing in the end. Simply let Oscar unlace his jacket and breeches, push them to the floor as if they were worth nothing.
They stood there in the flickering candlelight, free from their airs, their titles. Holding each other’s gaze as if they were equals.
Oscar brought a tentative hand to Lando’s face, stroking over the soft skin of Lando’s cheek.
Lando’s eyes fluttered and he turned his head to the side, pressing a warm kiss to the center of Oscar’s palm. The same way he did before battles, pulling Oscar’s hand to his lips, kissing the rough skin of Oscar’s palm and whispering, “Remember.”
Oscar had never asked what he was meant to remember—Lando, himself, that touch could be gentle. All of it, Oscar thought.
Oscar knew, then, what he needed from Lando. Knew how Lando could help him remember.
“Can you—” Oscar trailed off. He wanted it more than anything but he struggled to ask for it. Couldn’t stop imagining how the other knights would react if they knew Oscar spread his legs for the crown prince.
The knights already knew Oscar spent most nights in Lando’s chambers. But Oscar had been careful to keep up the illusion that Lando was the only one on his back. There was something powerful in bedding the crown prince, something almost enviable in fucking the man who sent them to war. But to let the crown prince fuck him? Oscar’s stomach twisted at the thought.
But he didn’t shy away as Lando slid his hand to cup Oscar’s arse. When Lando ghosted his fingers over Oscar’s hole, Oscar couldn’t hold back a whine.

“Maxy's heart is fast,” little Max mumbles barely audible as he presses Daniel's hand on his chest. He's tired and cold and his heart is thumping faster and stronger than usual and it doesn't let him sleep.
“It is, baby,” Daniel says when he feels the heartbeat and the warmth beneath his palm. “Your body is working hard to fight the bad bad illness that makes Maxy feel tired and cold and sad.”
Daniel hates seeing Max sick, especially when he's little. Chapter One: The Cameron’s
AN; Hi! I haven’t posted in forever but, I’m writing this new series, I posted it on wattpad first, but decided to just post it here as well, I hope everyone enjoys! No warnings for the first chapter.
Moving across the United States solely for her fathers selfish intent was definitely not enjoyable.
She had tried everything, asking to stay with her aunt, her godmother, getting her own apartment.
Yet her father had a good point. She couldn’t afford to live alone in California- they already struggled as a family, what made her think she could somehow push it alone?
The central valley, the farming area of California, not the sunny, beachy, enjoyable part. More like constant cow shit smell, allergies from shaken trees and lots of traffic.
Her dad was a hard working man. Always trying to keep the family up, and so was her mom. Growing up a farmers daughter wasn’t easy. Handed down clothes, same shoes for all four years of high school. Yet she had everything she ever wanted and more, what could she complain about?
The front door swung open, her father basically chasing after her as she threw her bag on the ground and stomped into the kitchen to see her mom cooking.
“You are allowing this?”
Eve yelled, her moms eyes growing a bit wide as she set the knife down to turn to her husband who stood next to her daughter out of breath from chasing her up the long driveway.
“It’s not in my hands.”
Eves mother shrugged as she picked the silver knife back up, chopping at the carrots.
Eve let out a laugh as she rubbed her forehead then looked at her dad.
“North Carolina? That’s across the country dad.”
Eves dad, Carlos, frowned, his hands gripping at his cap that he now held in his hands, his facial hair growing grayer by the day.
“Sweetheart, it’s too much to live here- farms not doing good, we don’t sell like we did when you were a baby. I got a great opportunity over there.”
Suddenly, Eve felt guilty for acting like she did, her heart rate slowing drastically as her lips turned downwards. She quickly stepped forward, her arms wrapping around her dad as she squeezed him, nodding her head as her chin rested on his shoulder.
“Alright.”
It all happened so quickly after that.
Some wealthy family bought out their land in a matter of days, giving them just the perfect amount of money to make that horrid trip.
It felt like months but in reality it only took two days to get to their new house. The main problem was, they weren’t really able to see the house they bought till they arrived.
It wasn't horrible, simple three bedroom house, the neighbors were pretty quiet too. Everything was to quiet. Seeing her dad happy like he was is what made the move worth it.
That new house feeling is always hard to shake off. Eve sat on the front porch, writing in her journal when she heard the sound of tires against the gravel of the driveway. Her eyes shot up to see a truck pulling in, her thumb clicking at her pen as she tilted her head back towards the kitchen window.
“Dad! Somebody’s here!”
Her dad usually replied fast but she got silence, rolling her eyes as she closed her journal and stood up, hearing somebody walk up the steps, The creaking making her head snap back almost instantly as she set her stuff down on the chair.
“Can I help you?”
A tall man, he looked clean, like he was from the bay area where she was from but she knew that probably couldn’t be true. The nice plaid shirt he wore tucked into his jeans, his facial hair gruff yet cleaned up. He probably had the most perfect teeth she’d ever seen.
“Carlos here?”
The older man asked as he pulled off his sunglasses, his blue eyes squinting as she looked him up and down, a concerned look on her face.
“Who’s asking?”
His chuckle made her upper lip curl slightly, about to introduce himself before her dad swung the front door open, wiping the oil off his hands.
“Mr.Cameron, So sorry I was over in the garage.”
“Please, Just call me Ward.”
Eve felt a bitter taste in her mouth as she grabbed her journal and pens and went to walk past her dad who gripped at her shoulder.
“This is my daughter Eve.”
Eve let out a quiet sigh, looking at her dad and tucking her journal under her arm before she turned around and put on a smile, her arm extending as she shook his hand.
“Pleasure to meet you.”
“Pleasures mine- I wanted to formally invite you to dinner at my house tonight, thought we could discuss some of the things we talked about over the phone?”
Ward spoke as Eve pushed past her dad and turned the corner, staying against the wall to listen to their conversation.
“I can bring my family?”
Carlos asked as he set his gloves down on the small shelf by the front door.
“Of course please, bring everyone.”
Ward laughed, patting Carlos’ shoulder before he began to walk down the steps of the porch.
“Seven pm okay? I’ll make sure I send you the address!”
As soon as her dad shut the door she turned from the corner, ready to protest but Carlos put his hand up and went to walk down the hallway.
“You’re going- I don’t wanna hear it.”
He spoke sternly as he washed his hands in the kitchen, Looking over as Eve leaned against the doorframe.
“I don’t even have nice clothes.”
Carlos rolled his eyes, drying his hands with a towel before digging into his back pocket and pulling out a crisp fifty dollar bill.
“Don’t tell your mom.”
Eve couldn’t help but smile as she grabbed the bill from his hand, kissing his cheek softly and grabbing the keys from the shelf and walking down the driveway.
Her first time going into town and she looked like.. shit. Her shorts torn up, and the one shirt she had on. She shrugged as she slipped on her sunglasses, starting up her dads truck.
No clue where she was going, she pulled up to a curb at the start of a strip of stores. Living this close to the water would definitely have to be something she would need to get use to. She shoved the trucks keys into her pocket and tugged at the door to make sure it was locked.
The sunglasses pulled the strands of her hair back as she slipped them over her head when she stepped into a store, Thankfully it was the perfect time of year for dresses, Eves hands separated the hangers looking for her size, not looking up when she heard the jingle of the bell again. She pulled one of the hangers off the rack looking at a beautiful solid black dress, her fingers digging for the tag. A huff of air leaving her as she saw the price, quickly putting it back.
Almost literally jumping out of her skin as one of the employees suddenly showed up right beside her, her body having a physical reaction as she jumped back and almost fell into the rack of jackets behind her.
“Need help finding something?”
She could hear her heart beating in her ears, but she shook her head with a slight laugh.
“No, I’m good, thanks.”
Eve nodded as she started looking at the dresses again, side eyeing the employee who stood in the same exact place.
“If I have any questions I of course would let you know.”
Eve spoke awkwardly, not sure what her reasoning was for just standing there. Eve cleared her throat and stepped back with one of the dresses, the employee's hand reaching out to reorganize the rack.
“That’s a seventy five dollar dress.”
The woman laughed slightly as Eve looked at the mirror holding it up to her frame, her eyebrows frowning as she looked over at her.
“Okay?”
She couldn’t help but scoff as she held the hanger in her hand still, what was she trying to say? She was having a really hard time grasping exactly what she meant- if she even had a point.
“I think you should go.”
The woman pulled the dress from Eves hands, making her laugh in disbelief, right when she was about to speak, another girl from behind her spoke
“And what If she had the money to pay for it? You want that dress? I’ll buy it for you, If it’s really that serious.”
The girl looked just as agitated as Eve, her head tilted as the employee rolled her eyes and handed the girl the dress.
“Sure Sarah.”
Sarah.
Eve turned the Sarah who was putting the dress back on the rack, her head tilting towards the door.
“There’s a better place down the street trust me, don’t give them your money.”
“I’m Eve by the way.”
Sarah nodded as she walked out the door. Eve followed cautiously, looking behind her with squinted eyes as she tried to see if there was a number she could call to complain.
Sarah noticed, shaking her head as her and Eve walked side by side.
“This strip doesn’t really have corporate numbers- they probably mistreat people all the time because of pogue status you know.”
What? Eve looked at Sarah confused as they walked into the new shop.
“What’s a pogue?”
Sarah was already ahead of her, flipping through racks with the ease of someone who had done this a thousand times. “You’ve got to try this one,” she said, holding up a sleek black dress that clung to her fingers.
Eve shook her head quickly. “I don’t think black’s my color.”
Sarah rolled her eyes but didn’t argue, instead pulling another gown off the rack. This one was a soft lavender, the fabric so light it seemed to look almost see through. “What about this? It’s subtle but stunning. Perfect for you.”
Eve hesitated, glancing at the price tag. Her stomach dropped. “Sarah, I can’t afford this,” she whispered, her voice barely audible over the music.
Sarah waved her off, tossing the dress into Eve’s arms. “Don’t worry about it. My dad’s got a tab here. Just try it on.”
But Eve didn’t believe in luck like that, especially considering she has no plans on leaving her house just like she did back at home. The town truthfully was beautiful though, riding with her windows down gave her a feeling she hadn’t felt once in her life.
Once she got back home, she walked into the house seeing her mom curling her hair, yelling at her younger sister, making her quietly step into her room to get ready.
The dress fit her perfectly, the dark purple fabric going down to her shins, knowing if it had went any higher her mom would’ve thrown a fit about modesty. She walked out the kitchen, seeing her dad trying to clip his watch on his own, her heels clicking as she stepped over to him and grabbed the watch from his wrist, carefully clipping it on for him.
“My beautiful.”
Her dad smiled as he kissed her forehead, making her smile as she fixed his collar for him.
“Please be good, Mr.Cameron is a good man, with lots of money. We need this.”
Eve looked up at her dad and nodded her head as she held the necklace he had made for her in her hand.
“I wouldn’t mess up anything for you, I don’t have it In me.”
The drive to Cameron's house felt longer than it should’ve. Watching the houses go from one to two stories, to green lawns to gated communities definitely made her rethink where they stayed.
Seeing her dad pull into the curved driveway, her eyes probably sparkling as she stared at the large house it led up to. That's why he dressed like he did. Of course they had to sit in the car and listen to her dads seven minute pep talk about what they can and cannot say, by the time it was time to go inside all her anxiety had bubbled up to a point she was scared she was going to really say something stupid now.
Carlos reached for the handle on the door and knocked, listening to the rhythm echo through the huge home in front of them. Eve fixed her posture as the door swung open, the man from earlier today having a wide smile on his face as he shook her dads hand and greeted her mom and sisters.
Forcing her smile once again as she greeted him, thanking him for inviting them to her home. The thank you wasn’t forced though, the house was huge. Probably the biggest place she’s ever been- in her life. Her eyes ran up the staircase that was right in front of the front door, her heels clicking against their floor as the adults quickly made their way into the kitchen area, already rambling on about the drive across the country and old farmland.
Eve walked into the living room area, the lights off and the moon shining through the windows. She walked closer to the large frames, looking out to see the breathtaking view, her hands resting at her sides as she heard the muffled conversation from the room over.
What could somebody possibly do for a job to be able to live like this? Her gaze switched from the window to the beautiful pottery on the small tables in the room, her fingers grazing over the table, way too scared to touch the pots in fear they would somehow crumble beneath her finger tips.
“Eve?”
Eves head turned instantly at the familiar voice, smiling slightly to see the girl she had met earlier today, in a beautiful orange dress, her hair curled as she smiled back at her.
“Sarah-“
She hurried over to her, laughing in confusion as she looked her up and down.
“You look- beautiful.”
Sarah smiled, tipping her head slightly as her hands pushed out to clap slightly.
“I mean look at you, I picked out the perfect dress right? This was the dinner you mentioned?”
Eve nodded awkwardly as she rubbed her arm, was this her family's house? How embarrassing she didn’t even know or remember their last name when she was asked about it earlier in the day.
“Ward is your dad?”
Eve asked as they started to walk to the dining room area.
“Yep. Sarah Cameron, that’s me.”
How awkward. Eve couldn’t help but admire the life that Sarah had laid in front of her, yet she was still so kind. Lost in her own thoughts, Eve was taken aback when Sarah grabbed her arm and stopped her just short of the dining room entrance.
“There’s this thing going on tonight, at my boyfriend's house. You should come. You can meet some people.”
Yeah, she was way too nice. Eve stared at her for a few seconds before she looked into the dining hall to see Ward and her dad laughing, Rose and her mom admiring each other's outfits.
“I don’t know.. my dad he’s super strict, never lets me leave the house.”
Sarah gave her an exasperated look, but before Eve could finish her protest, Sarah swept into the room.
“Where is Rafe?” she asked, her voice carrying just enough to catch Ward’s attention.
Ward looked up from the conversation he was having with Carlos, his brow furrowing slightly before waving a dismissive hand. “You know how he is,” he said with a chuckle, returning to the discussion about farmland and markets.
Eve shrugged, hoping that would be the end of it. Sarah shook her head and grabbed both of her arms.
“I’ll tell them that we met earlier today and we instantly clicked, you’re telling me your dad doesn’t want you making friends?”
“Who’s Rafe?”
The girl asked as a course was set in front of them, her stomach grumbling as she realized she really hadn’t eaten a single thing today.
Ward cut off Sarah as she went to speak.
“My son, told him we were having guests but unfortunately he missed your family's wonderful presence.”
Eve laughed as she took a bite of the food, her eyebrows frowning as she looked down at the plate, her hand covering her mouth.
“What is this? That’s delicious.”
The table laughed at her sincere reaction, silence lingering as everyone ate before Sarah chimed in.
“Dad, could Eve stay the night? I know it seems like we just met twenty minutes ago but we met earlier today down at the strip.”
Ward was a bit too enthusiastic to say yes, looking over at Carlos who was staring at Eve. Knowing he hated it when he was put on the spot for things like this.
“I have no problem with it all.”
What a horrible liar. Eve couldn’t help but smile as she looked over at Sarah, taking another bite of her food as she winked at her.

“Don’t fall though”
Sarah gasped as Eve climbed down through the window holding onto the frame, the two laughing as they ran across the yard holding their shoes in their hands.
Once they got to the actual street, Sarah said it wasn’t far to her boyfriends house so the two walked down the sidewalk, the crickets almost as loud as them.
The walk was pretty silent, Sarah must’ve noticed Eve admiring all the big houses, her gaze constantly away from the road.
“You’re quiet,” she finally said, glancing over.
Eve shrugged, her eyes still fixed on the street ahead. “Just… admiring how different this place is from where I grew up.”
Sarah laughed, a sound as light as the breeze. “Yeah, it’s pretty here, I guess. But after a while, it all just feels… the same. You’ll see what I mean.”
Once the two showed up, Sarah tugged her through the crowd of people and let go of her, running over to a boy and jumping on his back, her mood quickly shifted once she jumped off his back and smacked the arm of another boy across from her, even though eve was far from the scene she could tell they were arguing.
Eve stepped forward, smiling slightly as she cleared her throat. Sarah’s gaze went from the boy back to her, sighing as she grabbed Eves shoulder.
“This is Eve,” Sarah said, her tone slightly clipped. “Her family just moved here. Her dad’s working with ours. Eve, this is Rafe.”
Rafe turned to her then, his blue eyes piercing as they met hers. For a moment, the noise around them faded, and all Eve could hear was her own heartbeat, he was tall, and he seemed slightly out of it, his eyes hazy and a lazy smirk on his face.
“Rafe,” he said, his voice low and smooth as he extended his hand.
“Eve,” she replied, slipping her hand into his. His grip was firm, his hand warm against hers, and the contact sent a strange jolt up her arm.
"She's from California," Sarah added quickly, her tone sharp as she stood next to Topper, who offered a casual nod and introduced himself without much enthusiasm.
"So, you're full Kook, huh? Must be expensive out there," Topper quipped with a smug grin, swirling the drink in his hand.
Eve furrowed her brows, confused. Kook? What was that supposed to mean?
"What's a Kook?" she asked, glancing between them.
Rafe chuckled low, his smirk growing as he took a deliberate sip of his drink. The way his blue eyes lingered on her made her feel like the punchline to an inside joke she wasn’t in on.
"Just... don’t worry about it," Sarah sighed, clearly exasperated as she stepped over to a small drink station. She poured a glass and handed it to Eve.
"Yeah," Rafe drawled, leaning against the wall with casual confidence. "Don’t trouble yourself with the losers down there in the Cut." His tone was smooth, but there was a distinct edge, as though he relished the jab.
Eve accepted the drink from Sarah, still trying to piece together what was going on. "The Cut? What’s that supposed to mean?"
Sarah pinched the bridge of her nose and muttered under her breath, "Oh God, here we go..." before shooting a warning glance at Rafe.
"It means," Rafe said, stepping closer, his voice dripping with mock sympathy, "you’re better off sticking with the right crowd. You wouldn’t want to end up on the wrong side of town."
Eve narrowed her eyes, her grip tightening on the glass. The way he said it left a sour taste in her mouth, but before she could respond, Sarah cut in.
“Let me show you the view, it's insane.”
Sarah grabbed her arm, looking back at Rafe and Topper with a warning glance before she dragged Eve away.
Her grip on the drink tightened as a wave of embarrassment crept in. What did he mean by “the wrong side of town?” Was it obvious that she didn’t belong here?
Sarah’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Don’t let him get to you. He’s... complicated.”
Eve forced a smile, nodding even though she wasn’t sure what to say. “Complicated” was putting it lightly. She could still feel the weight of Rafe’s gaze, as if he’d peeled back a layer of her she wasn’t ready to share.
Sarah leaned against the railing of the porch, the wind blowing through her hair.
“Please really don’t take what Rafe, or what anybody says. A lot of them are pretty.. well dumb.”
Sarah and Eve laughed together, Sarah frowning slightly to see Eve swirl her drink around in her hand.
“I’ll be honest my dad had to drag me here, I left my whole life behind to be here.”
Eve spoke with a nod as she took a sip of the nasty mixed drink, licking her lips as Sarah nodded.
“I get it. You’re feeling out of place but it takes time, I promise you.”
Eve went to speak again but was cut off by the door swinging open. “
Sarah,” Rafe spoke with a sigh, his tone casual but somehow charged, “Kelce’s looking for you. Something about needing help with the keg.”
Sarah groaned, rubbing her forehead. “He’s a grown man; he can figure it out.”
“Yeah, well,” Rafe drawled, “he’s not doing a great job of proving that right now.”
Sarah gave Eve a small smile. “I’ll be right back. Don’t let him scare you.”
Eve tried to laugh, but it came out more as a nervous chuckle. As Sarah disappeared into the house, Eve found herself alone with Rafe.

Synopsis:
"Meg Halsey had a problem. In fact, she had several problems, the first of which, she acknowledges while looking at her semi empty living room, is that she can't afford to live alone anymore. The second one is that she doesn't wanna go back to her daddy's house again. This would be an inconceivable notion to her thirteen year old self, even her sixteen year old self, but at twenty five, she'd really choose living under the bridge first. Ok. Maybe not that." Meg Halsey is perfect: Beautiful, accomplished, a bright future doctor. She escaped her hometown and moved to New York, where she likely would have stayed forever. After her mother dies, though, she is forced to move back to Arkham and face everything she wanted to leave behind. --- A.K.A I made a tumblr post about how Crampton/Combs are romantically involved in all of their collabs, got replies and decided to write down a suggestion of "what if Meg was the protagonist, not Dan?" Also I did the cop-out summary thing and pasted the first paragraph of the fic. It's highway robbery. Criminal (I'm sorry).

Continuation of what I said before. This is also where the explicit rating comes in, in the sexual sense. Weeee! Also, if I got the chronological order of Ghostbusters scenes wrong, I'm sorry. I only watched once.
7. Cause there's nothing else to do...
Silence, in Meg's head. Complete void. Her very core shook, her hands, legs, everything with it. The crunching sound of her dad's bones, the man walking over him with force beyond what would be possible—those came in slowly.
West was mangled, but breathing.
She herself was breathing. Was she?
The room started up again around her almost too fast when her dad started crying out. The subject mimicked the sound, putting his hands over his ears…
And Meg could do nothing but stare.
The subject—the reanimated subject that both she and West had been responsible for—started hitting her father's head against the cold floor.
She watched.
Herbert made a noise behind her. Why couldn't she move?
This is a dream… A weird, horrible dream. When I wake up, I won't even remember.
“Stop!” Herbert yelled, a mimic of his early cry. He sprinted towards the subject, taking his arms, but was unable to move him
The dean cried.
This is what shock feels like from the inside.
The beige telephone, the breeze.
You've felt this before.
After the phone call you couldn't move.
You needed to go back home.
It was exam week. You stayed.
She died.
“Meg!” Herbert yelled. She looked down at him. “Snap out of it!”
A move, a twitch of the leg and she was on again. She threw herself at it—fruitless, as the corpse flung both of them away with ease.
The dean cried. Meg looked at him from a distance, being raised, hit against the wall.
He wouldn't be strong enough to fight. The subject bit his fingers off.
Meg heard the saw buzzing before she saw it. West perforated the center of the body, coming through bloody and victorious.
She watched as he laid him on the floor gently, before sprinting towards her father.
He shook him, he checked his pulse. Meg laid down, looking at the bright fluorescents. They pierced her eyes, which she welcomed, considering the alternative was replaying her father's fingers being bitten off one by one.
The room was silent, as silent as her brain had been, but not still.
She was cold.
“He's dead.”
“I know.”
Meg raised her body and threw up. She saw the vomit and only then computed what was happening. When she turned back to West, he was dragging her father's body.
The floor is cold… The floor is cold.
“What are you doing?” Her voice came out labored. Her throat was sore. When she screamed she couldn't feel it, but now it was burning. Old Miskatonic had nothing on it.
“I'm getting results,” he answered as if it was obvious. His reagent was removed from his pocket, a new syringe was employed—and her hand was on West's thigh in a second. He looked down at her with wide eyes.
“Don't.” She sounded confident and determined. She felt like she had fallen from a building, broken through the floor and kept going for several floors. He kneeled to talk to her, eyes wide in desperation, begging to be let through into her brain.
“The subject listened to us, made a conscious move…” She grabbed his shirt on the shoulder, bunching it up. The blood and sweat were cold against her skin. They were close together, noses almost touching.
“Herbert, you will not turn my dad into that.”
He paused.
“You're right,” he nodded, agreeing. “Maybe the subject just wasn't fresh enough, but I can bring him back…” She waved her head and he looked at her.
“Don't.” West's face contorted into a mask of annoyance and impatience. Meg's didn't move.
“This is the freshest subject we'll get save for killing one ourselves…!” She laughed, more of a shriek really, making him pause mid sentence. Her body convulsed forward, the smell of vomit, blood and chemicals making her stomach churn again. (She continued laughing for ten seconds. He counted).
“Sure!” Meg said, finally. “I'll kill someone. We'll get someone straight from the main floor. I don't care.” She held him even tighter, knowing it was bound to hurt. “Don't. Touch. My dad—he's not a subject.”
“If you could have done this for your mother, would you?” He asked. She remembered the conversation she had with her father mere hours ago.
“How did you…”
There is nothing one can do against death.
“Yes…” Meg admitted, softly. She let her forehead touch his shoulder, feeling empty. His tie was crooked. She fixed it before moving away to lay on the floor, limp.
“I will bring him back,” Herbert assured. Without further argument, he picked the flask back up, not bothering with recorders, the freshness of the subject taking priority.
Meg didn't do much, just laid there, waiting.
“I’ll show you…” Herbert murmured. The fluorescent lights didn’t bother her anymore. “I’ll show all of you...”
A beat, two beats. Meg was shaking, but didn’t feel it—she knew it from seeing it.
When her dad started moaning to indicate he was alive, West spoke again.
“Dr. Halsey, you once did me a favor by letting me into your medical school. Welcome back to life.”
Meg was sitting at a hospital bed. That was the first real recollection she had of that day, or at least of after she successfully reanimated her first corpse. Her father was dead.
Twice, Herbert's voice said in her head. He failed…
They failed.
“Meg?” She lifted her head. It was Harrod. “Here, it's for your throat.”
“Thank you,” she said, taking the plastic cup, but holding it limp over her knees. “Did she pick up?”
“Yeah, she's coming to get you.”
“Thank you.”
“Take those,” was all she said in return before leaving.
The official story was that Dean Halsey ‘went crazy’ after finding out that Meg and West were indeed together—behind his back. He flipped out, attacked both her and West, before being mercifully stopped, leaving behind two victims in a complete state of shock. He was in a padded room, taken away in a straitjacket. Meg was sitting, free, in a hospital room. Her pills were limp in her hand.
Her parents were dead, her cat was dead… All she had in the world was her roommate, who was coming to pick her up.
And West…
She shook her head, like an etch-a-sketch. At least the hospital was calmer. Meg wondered if she could ever step foot there again without having a mental collapse.
She finally dawned the pills.
When Ace arrived, she hugged her.
“So your dad flipped out?” She nodded. Ace smiled, sympathetic. “Don’t worry, I get it.”
They stood huddled together against the cold. It was getting firmer, the weather, which meant it was only going to get chiller.
“Where's West?” Ace asked. Meg sniffled.
“No idea.” It was true. After being cleared out, he looked at Meg briefly and disappeared—probably knowing that once she recovered complete control over her body, at least psychologically, she was gonna rip his head off.
It’s not only his fault, but you know that don't you?
“I know we haven't known each other for too long, but you could have told me you two were like that. I wasn't gonna say anything.” Meg smiled.
“I know. I'm sorry.”
“It’s ok, I have my private life too… Still, next time I’ll cover for you.” She hummed in response. “Is your dad going to be okay?” Instead of answering, Meg started crying.
Home was inviting, warm. Felix the cat greeted her, a souvenir from better times.
“I'll make you some tea.”
“Thank you,” Meg said. Ace arranged for Ed to bring her car back home. Nothing to throw on the bowl. Her face was swollen, puffy. She had an extreme headache and when she finally found the couch, she knew she wasn’t getting up.
“Ow…” Meg said. Her body ached—she could remember being thrown all over the place. The pills weren’t enough to make it all go away. No amount of ibuprofen could, probably.
I held onto West’s shoulder. There was a rotten smell. I gave up, we were getting ready to leave…
“Here,” Ace said, putting the mug in front of Meg. She stared at it. Yesterday it had been coffee… “Have you slept?”
Oh yeah… Right…
“No,” Meg admitted, taking the mug. Earl Gray, the only type of tea she had around, the only one she drank. “I should, shouldn’t I?”
Ace sat down, criss crossed her legs and looked at Meg with her big brown eyes.
They were shiny, like West’s.
“I think the right thing for me to say would be yes: Yes, you should go to bed, yes you should try to forget this for a second—but you won’t. So, instead, I’ll ask you: What do you need?”
Meg cried into her mug. The ride home wasn’t enough? But Ace looked like she expected that.
“I have Sixteen Candles on VHS. Do you wanna watch that, to take the edge off a little bit?”
“Is that the one with that red haired girl?” Meg asked, using both her hands to dry her tears. She could barely lift her arms.
“Molly Ringwald, yes. She’s sixteen and her parents forgot her birthday, real tragedy.”
“Why do you have that on VHS?” Ace shrugged.
“I have Christine too, if you wanna watch a killer car. I also have The NeverEnding Story and Ghostbusters…”
“How many VHS tapes do you have?” Meg managed to ask. Her throat was sore and her tears were still flowing—she wasn’t hiccuping or convulsing, but she was steady.
Perfect little cry for the perfect little girl.
“A couple. They’re expensive, but I buy the ones I like, or stuff I saw on TV and wanna see again.”
“Sixteen… Candles…” Oh, here we go. The hiccups. Not so perfect after all.
Well, at least you are human, unlike that… Her brain conjured up the image of the subject hitting the door. Next came the feeling of West holding her back, his arms around her as she cried out, his breathing on her neck, his voice close to her ear…
“Yeah,” Ace said, unphased. “It’s light, but it’s romance…” Meg waved her head.
“Let’s watch Ghostbusters. I didn’t catch that one in theaters…”
And you go to the theaters since…?
Not since 1979, at least.
“Ok, it’s good. Doubt it will make you laugh, but it’ll try. You should really finish your tea. I’ll make popcorn, do you think you can eat that?”
Meg wasn’t sure.
“I’ll try.”
Ghostbusters was fun. It didn’t distract her—her thoughts were with her dad, in a padded cell somewhere, in the dark—but as far as comedies went... Ace did a lot of the talking about how it was much more accurate when it came to real life ghosts and supernatural phenomena than she expected when she took Ed to see it with her.
“Since when have you two been together?” Meg asked. Rick Moranis was running through New York. She was trying to eat some more butter popcorn—it was soggy and it stained her fingers, making them slimy. She appreciated any other sensorial sensation other than pain, though. At least the tears were gone. Small talk would surely fill the crater forming slowly in the decaying tissue of her heart.
Dramatic much?
Shut up.
“We met during a club meeting, at Miskatonic. People who believe in the paranormal, all that,” Ace said without looking at anything other than the screen. “He was interested in my history with the practice, I was interested in why someone who looked like him was interested.”
“Why do you say that?” Meg asked. Ace smiled.
“Eddie looks like a rich boy and is a rich boy. I wasn’t poor growing up, my family does pay for my education, but Eddie is old money. It made more sense when he told me he was sick a lot as a child and read copious amounts of… Anything, really, to pass the time. His family is also weird, not like mine, but…”
“How weird is your family?”
There was silence. New York boomed through the speakers. Meg looked at the screen and fought her feelings.
She desperately wished she hadn't left, that she hadn't come back for her mother's funeral, to take care of her dad, to meet Herbert West…
“I’ll tell you if you tell me the truth about you and West.” Meg looked at her, glad to ignore the television. Ace continued. “I know you and him weren’t together. Sure, it made sense, but other things didn’t click. Your dad suddenly losing it, really losing it makes no sense. I mean, I thought it did, but then I thought about it again, and…”
“Ok,” Meg said, stopping her. She put the bowl down. She had no idea it had even been on her lap—she must have eaten almost all of it. Ace looked expectant. For a second, Meg almost felt like telling her everything—to unburden herself:
Let someone else have all this mess, go to bed and don't think about it for a while. C'mon. Of everyone you've ever met, she is probably the least likely to judge you.
C'mon, Megan. Say it.

“It's complicated. It's…”
“OK,” Ace said, with a nod. “I get it. Let's finish the movie, ok?”
Dark at first. Slab, in the middle of the room. A corpse, looking at her. It was her own mother's, of course. Her dreams were getting less subtle.
“Meg,” a voice, a hand on her arm. Herbert materialized in front of her, the needle full of green—pulsating and neon. The newfound fluorescents did nothing for her complexion.
“You are cold, sure, but you have some warmth to you. Your aura. I read it somewhere…”
“Thanks mom.”
“How old am I?”
Why do you ask?
“Meg,” Herbert's hand went further up, to her forearm. He was closer, the needle squirting reagent. “I can save her. I can cure her. I can experiment on her.”
Less and less subtle.
What?
She didn't know. She looked at her mother's corpse. She had no head.
“She doesn't have a brain.”
“She doesn't need one,” Herbert said and smiled. With an almost skip of his step, he walked to the slab.
Meg watched. She also wanted to know what would happen.
“The head is in the trash can,” she said. “I should put it back.”
“No. It'll cost us results.”
Meg watched.
“Maybe if I…” Herbert looked back at her. His eyes were green. Expectant.
There was a tick tock. It was her Felix clock. Eyes going back and forth.
“Ms. Halsey.”
“Yes. I want you to save her.”
I want to know.
Meg watched. Herbert injected the reagent. He looked at the watch he had on his wrist.
“Twenty seconds…” She approached the body, and him. She put her own hand on his forearm. He didn't move. He seemed to be sweating, damping his blue shirt. “Thirty seconds.”
The trashcan started screaming. Both she and him looked at it, startled.
“Go get it,” Herbert said, finally. Meg turned towards him, an indignant expression on her face, nails against her palms. “Well? It's your mother. Not mine.”
“Your parents are dead.” The screams were louder, but she didn't budge, she kept looking into his eyes. Herbert looked back.
“So are yours. Fetch the head.”
Meg walked to the trash can—her doctor resolve on, her pink scrubs immaculate, ready for surgery—and pulled it out. Her father looked back at her. He was screaming, but no sound came out. That seemed natural to her.
“What now?”
“We'll sew them, of course.”
Meg never did see the sewing. The dream shifted. It was her house—not her old house, the house she shared with... Her mother and father were drinking tea with her. The television was on, airing Sixteen Candles.
“I'm so happy you invited us here,” her mother said, putting her cup down. Her head was sharing a neck with her dad's.
Meg beamed.
“I'm glad you could make it at a time in which… is at home.”
Her fiance… Husband… Was a doctor. She stayed at home a lot. She was happy. He was making noise in his office, getting something. She didn't know what.
“A bright young hope for the future of medicine,” her dad said, assuring her mother. He turned his head towards her. They had half clothes, her mother wore red, her father wore tweed. He had an earring on, she had his reading glasses.
“I'm back,” he said, entering the room, well humored. Meg was happy with the choice: He was tall, athletic, brown eyed and brown haired. He was bright. He was perfect.
She fixed her bob, making sure it was flipping inwards.
“...Is happy to finally get you here, mom,” Meg said, when he sat down.
“Oh yes, Meg talked so much about you. You're basically her idol.”
“Oh, please. I did my best with Meg, but it was all her. She's the bright one. She gave us no troubles.”
“No bottom drawer files,” her dad said and laughed. He laughed too, her mother laughed. Meg didn't laugh immediately, but read the room and followed suit.
The dream shifted. Meg was fucking West on the slab. There was no mother, no father. The room was darker. The clock was gone. They panted and sweated out.
She had her old white bra on, which she sometimes wore beneath more sheer blouses. It was loose on her, he had pulled it down to see her body better. Otherwise, she was naked. West dragged his hands up her torso, towards her breasts, and squeezed them. She was on top. His glasses were gone—had fallen somewhere.
He looked up at her while she looked down.
The room seemed to be composed of them alone. There was no sound other than the metal underneath, the panting, her moaning, his moaning.
More vocal than originally expected…
But he is intense, isn't he?
That's a way of saying it…
“Harder,” Herbert said, commanding. Meg stopped, locking her legs on both of his sides. “Meg,” he said, putting his hands on her hips, to pull down. She didn't budge. They were both out of breath. Her hair definitely looked ragged, but he still looked prim.
She hated that. She wanted to keep hearing him make those noises. His naked torso was illuminated by the shallow fluorescent light, his legs were half naked…
God…
“Or what? What are you going to do?” His eyes sharpened.
“Leave, but you don't want that, do you?” Meg locked him further in place. He smiled. “I figured as much…”
Mockery. His main defense mechanism.
That and attacking.
Silence again.
“Why?” Meg asked. The question seemed to echo throughout the room. Herbert raised an eyebrow.
“Why?” He repeated, half laughing. She wanted to kiss him, but had a vague notion that much of the sex was prefaced with her being pressed against a wall—or vice versa. “Why do you think?” He buckled again, she didn't let him.
“I don't know. That's why I'm asking.” He grunted, squirming.
“You and I… Are similar.”
“How?” Meg asked. She couldn't possibly understand. Herbert stopped trying to push into her and she counted that as a victory. He raised his body, pulling her closer, his lips touching hers briefly. Meg didn't try to pretend she didn't want to and raised her hands to bury her fingers into his hair.
“The main difference between you and I,” he began, looking into her eyes, caressing her neck, going down to her collarbone, with the hand he didn’t squeeze her waist with, “lies in upbringing. You were appropriately raised by a cushy family, in a cushy neighborhood. Had I been brought up as you were, maybe I'd be more like you. I'd be a nice proper doctor. I would have had swimming lessons. I'd have an alcoholic mother. I'd learn how to pray. I'd have found myself a nice girl…”
“...Or boy…” Meg completed. He smiled.
“Oh. You're not even sure I'd be interested in having you like I am now, are you? Pretty little Meg Halsey…” He took a strand of her hair in between his fingers and let the thought trail off as he began thrusting into her again, with some effort. “How long have you wanted this?” Meg sighed. He sounded perfectly normal, unphased. The sounds were gone.
This was natural to her.
“A while…”
“What's a while?” Meg didn't want to say. Herbert laid her down on the slab once more, for a more comfortable position. She flinched at the cold against her back. His head covered some of the light in that strange space and she saw him with a halo around his head. “What's a while, Ms. Halsey?”
“A… week? Two… weeks?” She asked. She didn't have the capacity for coherent thought while he was fucking her. “At least since… Since you…”
“Yes?” He asked, leaning his head slightly to hear her better.
“...Came to my house…” He laughed. Meg hated the way it made her body tingle. She put her hand over his heart and the facade fell through when she felt how fast it beat, pumping blood into his veins.
He didn't stop. It was as if he wasn't human.
“God, you are such a little whore, ms. Halsey. Maybe our sweet red haired classmate was right…”
“I didn't… Think about it…” Meg explained. “I don't think I know. I wanted you to…”
In the car. She remembered. You stared at his hands too much not to want them on you.
Herbert hummed as if he heard her thoughts, putting his hands over her again. She had one leg raised—he had a hand on it and another over her stomach.
He thrust into her harder and she moaned louder. It was rare she had full freedom to make noise like that, to show how pleased she was. He smiled.
“You used to ride those stupid men, in dormitories, inside your childhood bedroom,” he dropped his body further into hers, kneading them together. She put her legs around his waist. “And now look at you. You're under me. You and I, ms. Halsey…”
“Yes…” Meg agreed, powerless to think or say anything else. Her mouth was dry. She dug her nails into his shoulder, wanting to grab him as strongly as she felt, as much as she wanted. He didn't seem to mind.
Didn't you have a husband? Fiance?
You did…
Somewhere…
“You and I…” He repeated, thrusting, slightly out of breath. Meg put her head against him, moaning against his skin. “...Will live lifetimes together.” He raised his head and kissed her forehead, next to the roots of her hair. “You'd make a fine specimen.”
When she came in the dream, she woke up.
