This is my list of (IMHO) genuinely heroic people. I keep this list so that when I'm feeling uninspired I can pick a name at random, look them up, and be inspired. My memory kinda sucks so I've usually forgotten about them in the interim so it's like hearing some inspiring story for the first time. Please feel free to use this list for that purpose or for whatever purpose helps you. This is a private thing I've been absent-mindedly curating for years, so it's a little discombobulated; maybe I should put it in alphabetical order, for example. Since it works for what I use it for, though, I've never had the need for that, although there may be some duplicates specifically because of that.
If you have any additions, I'd love to hear them.
If you know of a reason somebody should not be on here, I'd love to hear that too. There are some controversial choices here, some people I've hemmed and hawed about, but in the end they're still on the list.
In no particular order:
Rachel Corrie
Aaron Bushnell
Sophie Scholl
Irena Sendler
Eugeniusz Łazowski
Mary Schweitzer. I know who she is but I'm including her anyway. Takes guts to do what she did
Temar Boggs
Juan Pujol García
Warrant Officer Hugh Thompson
Robert Smalls
Temar Boggs
Henrietta Swan Leavitt
Aitzaz Hassan Bangash Shaheed. Might already be on here; I need to alphabetize this list
Sal Khan. Yeah, I'm including him
Irena Sendler
Neerja Bhanot
Iqbal Masih
Tank man
Stephen Ruth. The guy with the cameras. He's no tank man, but why not, he's on the list
Narendra Dabholkar
Dietrich Bonhoeffer
Sophie Scholl
Charles Hazlitt Upham
Wang Weilin
John Rabe (? ... Kind of questionable for obvious reasons. He saved a couple hundred thousand Chinese people though. I don't know. He was what he was.)
Baron Jean Michel P.M.G. de Selys Longchamps, DFC
Aitzaz Hasan Bangash
Daniel Hale
Hannie Schaft
Reality Winner … I guess
Aki Ra
Norman Borlaug
Neil Armstrong
Stanislav Petrov
Vasili Alexandrovich Arkhipov
William Kamkwamba
Donald A Henderson
Freddie Oversteegen
Daryl Davis and his collection of robes
Jacinto Convit
Sir Nicholas Winton
August Landmesser
Jonas Salk
Carl Lutz
Giorgio Perlasca
Derrick Nelson, principal of Westfield High School in New Jersey
Giles Corey
Chiune Sugihara
Sophie Scholl
Ronald McNair? Why not
Khader Adnan
Mordechai Vanunu
Corollary:
I'm not sure how to phrase "the opposite of this list," so I'm just going to call it the opposite of this list. Genuinely villainous people? Too easy, and honestly not what I'm going for. Anyway, I'm going to leave out the obvious like Hitler, Trump and Gaddafi because they're, well, obvious. Actually I'm not really sure what the goal of this list is so I'm just kind of winging it. People not to emulate?

Title: Popular uprising in China in 1989 The "Tank Man" remains missing
With two shopping bags, he stood in the way of Chinese tanks: The picture of the "Tank Mans" from Tiananmen Square in 1989 went around the world, its fate is unknown.
By Axel Dorloff, ARD Studio Beijing
In the spring of democracy in 1989, hundreds of thousands of citizens demonstrated in China for weeks for more social and political freedoms. On June 4, 1989, the Chinese military bloodily suppressed the protests surrounding Tiananmen Square in Beijing. Hundreds of people are killed, some sources even speak of thousands of deaths.
Photo goes around the world
The photo of the man in the white shirt with the two shopping bags goes around the world and still employs writers, filmmakers and historians. "Mr. Wang, the man who stood in front of the tanks" is the latest book by the Chinese exile author Liao Yiwu in German.
He writes: "On the morning of June 5, 1989, with blood flowing and the air crackling, he faced the tanks alone - a nobody, a man like you and me, stood in the middle of the wide Chang'an -Boulevards, in front of more than 18 type 59 tanks. The front tank tried to get past it, but he knew how to prevent it by jumping back and forth."
Reporters are stuck in the hotel
This morning of June 5, Western journalists are being held at the Beijing Hotel due to martial law. Among them was the American photojournalist Jeff Widener from the AP news agency. From the balcony he wants to photograph the tank column on Chang'an Boulevard - then this man stands in front of the tanks.
Last year, Widener told ARD: "I was waiting for the moment when they shot him. But nothing happened. Incredible - how can he stand there even though he is being shot? He doesn't care about his own safety at all."
The identity of the man is unclear
The next morning his photo appears on dozens of front pages worldwide. The man in front of the tank became famous as "Tank Man" - and Jeff Widener for his iconic photo. "It was incredible, I knew that it was a good photo, but not such a sensation," said Widener.
But the main actor in the photo was and remains unknown. He was not one of the student leaders who had previously shaped the protest in China. His name is said to be Wang Weilin or Wang Guangyao. But his identity remains a mystery to this day. Whether he was hiding in 1989, emigrated or was executed: Nobody knows.
The picture of "Tank Man" is one of the most important of the 20th century - the photographer had no idea at the time. | more
Last year, on the 30th anniversary of the Tiananmen massacre, the British television channel 4 produced a mini-series on Tank Man, title: Chimerica. The story: The journalist who took the photo at the time sets off 20 years later to decipher the identity of the Tank Man. Everything reminiscent of the Tank Man is censored on China's Internet today. Because it is a kind of cipher for Western values, the Chinese Communist Party tries to prevent any memory of him, the iconic photo and the 1989 massacre.
Just an official statement about the man's whereabouts
The only high-ranking politician who has ever commented on this is the former head of state and party leader Jiang Zemin, most recently in an interview with Mike Wallace from the American television station C-Span in 2000: "I have instructed people in the security authorities to use their entire networks to find out where this young man has gone. After a month-long investigation, I can safely say that this man was not arrested, "said Jiang Zemin.
The Tank Man remains a symbol of democratic resistance in China. But the mystery of his person remains unsolved. And offers space for wild speculation. Starting from the execution in a secret place to a secret crossing to Taiwan, where he is supposed to work as an archaeologist today.
Motif in pop culture
Mr. Wang appears in novels, poems and rock songs. And it also serves as a symbol that something remains of the 1989 protest. Because when this young man tried to stop the tanks on Chang'an Avenue in Beijing with two bags in hand on June 5, the nationwide protest was and the democracy movement in China has already been brutally ended with a brutal massacre.

Why “Tank Man” is a great leader ?
For me a leader, necessarily has an inner strength. His limits are well defined, he knows what he wants and where he goes. In the same way, he has strong principles which he follows in all circumstances. It gives an impression of self-control, control and calm, especially when the situation becomes critical. He is not afraid to take risks. He is ready to defend his ideas because he is convinced that they are worthwhile. He seeks harmony, and willing to sacrifice himself for the good of all. I will tell you about this Chinese student known as "tank man" for his bravery because he brings together, in my eyes, all the qualities of a leader.
Tumblr media
The photo of "The man from Tiananmen Square" quickly became the symbol of the unequal battle between students and the Chinese army during the military repression. On April 15, 1989, thousands of students and intellectuals are going down Tiananmen Square, the central location of the capital of China, to pay tribute to Hu Yaobang, a convinced reformer ousted from the government. They demand greater freedom and less corruption. For many weeks, it is the "Spring of Beijing".
The incident took place on 5 June 1989,  man, alone, in a white shirt, stands in front of a column of tanks. The image appears on some of the newspapers of the whole world, he becomes the symbol of a peaceful struggle against the violence of the army.
Several hypotheses are available on the net and in newspapers, but no one has been able to identify with certainty this man standing in front of four tanks. He embodies symbol of the people rising in front of one of the most powerful armies in the world. Wang Weilin is the name published in the 90s by the Daily Express, a English tabloid. Others newspapers, says it is a 19-year-old student.
His destiny is even more obscure than his identity: executed two weeks later or still alive, both theses circulate but none really knows what happened to this modern hero. It is his anonymity that makes him a symbol of eternal bravery in the eyes of the world. He was certainly a model for the persons present, and for those who discovered it through the media, encouraging them never to give up despite the fear.

6,000-year-old cemetery unearthed in NW China
XI'AN, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- A 6,000-year-old cemetery where an estimated 2,000-plus people were interred has been excavated in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, archaeologists said.
The cemetery, covering about 90,000 square meters, is located near the Yangguanzhai ruins, which belonged to a late Neolithic culture called the Yangshao that originated on the middle reaches of the Yellow River and is considered a main precursor of Chinese civilization.
It is the largest cemetery from the Yangshao Culture period, researcher Wang Weilin, who headed the excavation, said at an ongoing seminar on new archaeological findings in 2016. Read more.

Tiananmen Square 30 Years Later
Today is a sad anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre. It is all the more sad due to the success of the Chinese regime to wipe out memories of the massacre in the country while crushing dissent. It falls to the rest of the world to keep the memory alive in the hope that truth, like water, will find its way through the most formidable walls.
On June 4th, the Chinese regime massacred students and citizens who gathered to demand freedom. Some estimates put the death toll in the thousands.
China has implemented an Orwellian rating system for citizens — tying their good behavior scores to the use of basic services and perks. Young people know little of the massacre and frankly may care even less. All of the young people who I have spoken with from China describe an apolitical generation with little interest in the massacre. One such Chinese person working in the United States as an au pair simply told us that she does not believe it ever happened because the government would not do such a thing.
In the meantime, outside of China, government officials are defending the massacre as necessary to avoid “turbulence.”
There will be a Congressional hearing in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, “Tiananmen at 30: Examining the Evolution of Repression in China,” at 10:00 a.m. – Noon
Some 23 Human rights organizations will hold at the Capitol a rally starting at 1:30 p.m.
Here is a list of activities for June Fourth [Tiananmen Square Massacre] 30th Anniversary (including events throughout the United States) (Human Rights in China, 30 May 2019)
The true identity of the “tank man” remains unresolved but his fate is assumed. (There were others who stood before tanks on that day). The British tabloid Sunday Express identified the man as Wang Weilin, 19, who was later charged with “political hooliganism” and “attempting to subvert” the nation. Like thousands of others, he disappeared with virtually all evidence the greatest fight for liberty in the history of modern China.
These events help guarantee that China cannot erase the memory of these incredibly brave people who gave their lives for basic human rights.

Toutes me rendent très triste.
